High CPU usage, overall slow performance after hardware upgrade

Q: High CPU usage, overall slow performance after hardware upgrade

After installing a new evga gtx460 and Thermaltake 600w ps i am experiencing big time system slowdown and high CPU usage. The problem could be conflicts, hardware or software, or just simply a system bottleneck, but one thing is for sure, when my system had my old 9800GT installed I experienced none of these slowdown issues. Lookit all them sound tabs.... mebbe thats it? Help please, let me know what other info is needed.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

I've seen this problem mentioned several times here an on the web but haven't seen a satisfactory PERMANENT resolution.

I could sit for moments on end watching the hourglass rotate between applications.
10 svchost listings and several spools to boot. Not sure what all of that means but by my investigating I can tell it's excessive.

went dramatically downhill. I wasnt sure as to why this happened so i restored my whole laptop but to no effect.
Any ideas? Anything helps,

Hi everyone,

I have some problems with my relatively new dell laptop (4 months old, and the problems are present for like 3 months), which include: Very high RAM usage: 80% when only Microsoft Edge is turned on.
Very high Disc usage: 100% almost at all times
Low performance in games (the laptop meets the req. for a game, still cant handle it; low fps, stuttering, freezing.
Can't handle videos sometimes: the sound works but video is frozen, or video Works and sound freezes.
Sometimes VERY S L O W: sometimes when i open an app, it turns on after a minute; when i type, the letters appear after a while.

I have already reset it to factory settings and wiped the HDD, didn't help. I have a lot of free space on HDD, no dust in the laptop, no physical damage, no viruses, no (useless) background proceses.

I have already had a call with a dell technician (he did some changes and driver updates), also didn't help.

Do you think a RAM upgrade would solve this? Or do i have to take it to service? Or anything else? Please help.

Thanks for answer in advance. (and sorry for my weak english)

Regards,
Martin

I sincerely hope someone can help. I do not consider myself really computer illiterate, but this is where my understanding ends and I would truly value all help offered.

I have a Toshiba Satellite Pro M70 of 2 yrs old and I am a definite advocate for Toshiba. However, my operating system is slow. Average day usage with Internet Explorer and Office 2007 is a painstaking process that takes too long. I have had conflicts with Trend Micro Internet Security 2008, which works perfectly.

But starting up the computer takes ages. CPU usage is usually high and System Idle Processes as well. I have reinstalled Windows XP from the Toshiba Boot DVD already 4 times with starting fresh and installing everything time and time again. Each time after getting everything up to speed again, the performance is disappointing.

I have extended RAM to 1,49 GB which made little difference from the original 1/3 of RAM. It seems that something is slowing down the computer, but this is not visable in the processes; other than quite a few svhost.exe processes that take little processing capacity nor CPU usage.

I have used Windows Gold Certified Uniblue Power Suite with a good registry cleaner. This helps a bit, but after a couple of days it seems to get only worse. I have an Intel Pentium M 1.73 GHz processor. Research online reveals that Trend Micro IS 2008 is quite good and demanding little capacity in comparison to competing security packages.

Is this system/software related or could th... Read more

A:Re: Satellite Pro M70 - High CPU Usage - Low Performance

Hi

I doubt this could be a hardware issue? I mean a CPU usage could goes up if a certain service or applications would run in the OS background.

Usually the Antivirus applications are one kind of software which could cause such issue? I had a Norton System works installed on my notebook and this software needed a lot of hardware resources which slowed down the notebook?
Furthermore some Toshiba applications which are installed and running in the background could affect the performance. But such applications are needed in order to use all notebook features?

However, in msconfig you could disable it.
Start msconfig -> startup tab and disable some processes which are not necessary for you.

Furthermore you could use the CCleaner to clean the OS and the registry?

i have a problem but i bought a new Dell laptop with the following specifications
Dell inspiron 15R
core i7 3.1GHz Turbo, 6MB cache
16GB DDR3 RAM
Geforce Gt525 1GB Graphics

now the problem is that when the system is ideal it takes around 2.5 GB RAM usage
even there is no running applications
also i noticed that it's performance not that much.

is it normal?

A:Windows 7 high RAM usage and low performance

I think it's OK. For Win7 Ult it's normal to use about 25-30% of the RAM in idle. And it's about that percentage no matter how much RAM do You have installed .

I've just started having a problem where my computer becomes periodically unusable for chunks of time, like 30-60 minutes.
Everything is going along well and then it slows down to a crawl.
In the task manager, under performance, I see a crazy amount of activity, sometimes pegged at 100%, sometimes less. But even when it shows the cores around 50-70%, I can't even right an email without significant lag.

It's a Dell, Windows 7 x64. i7 processor, 16gb of RAM.
The thing is, when I look at the applications running, none of them account for all the activity.
When I look at processes that doesn't add up to all the activity I'm experiencing either.
I got something called Process Explorer which gives a more thorough list but that doesn't show very high activity either for any process.

I ran several virus scans while the computer was booted into safe mode with networking. One of them caught some stuff, but subsequent searches came up clean.

I ran a tool to clean up the registry.

I can't figure out what is causing the problem and I don't know what to try now. It's weird because after a while the activity will just stop and I can use my computer again. And then just as mysteriously the problem will start up again.
Thanks for any help.

A:Performance problem from periodic high CPU usage, please help

Sounds like you got background programs running try control alt delete check and checking task manager to see what processes are sucking up CPU and you could try config.sys check your startup services are running.

So I got this message yesterday.... only got it once.  Then my computer auto rebooted twice.  Then this morning, every time my computer booted up, it auto rebooted several times.  After about the 5th time, it finally stayed on so I could use it.  Then I got an email from Comcast saying that I very well could have a BOT.  So I have no idea if these are all related or what.  I have Norton antivirus on my computer, so I am assuming that is not working well or something.  Please steer me in the right direction.

I'm posting here because we are talking about performance and resource monitor.

As I have noticed before, my machine last night started being quite audible, sounding really busy. When I looked in task manager and performance and resource monitor I noticed that my cpu usage was running between 55% to 70% without Firefox or IE8 being loaded. This may be normal, yet my question is why could I not see that usage in either monitors? Something under system (kernel......?) was showing the biggest usage of about 20% but the rest of the list showed either 0% or perhaps a few kept fluctuating between 1% to 2% but there was nothing I could see that added up to what I was being told the usage was. My memory usage at that time was about 23% to 25%, disk usage 1%. So, what kept my machine so busy? This morning all is back to normal cpu around 3%, memory about 33%.

A:High CPU usage in Performance and Resource Monitor?

I would first check to see what programs are scheduled to perform scans around that time. Depending on the settings (daily, weekly, etc) it may take a while for it to recur.

When you open up Task Manager, go to the Processes tab.
Make sure that you click on the button in the lower left that says "Show processes from all users:
Then click on the View menu item, then on the Select columns menu item.
Place checkmarks in the I/O Reads and I/O Other boxes and click OK to exit the dialog.
Then expand the Task Manager window so that you can read the columns (you can double click on a column header to sort by that column).

Then wait for it to happen again - and check for the highest numbers in each of the columns. Let us know what you find and we can work from there.

Evening Folks,

I just recently installed Windows 10 on my Dell Inspiron Laptop and so far I am not impressed at all - in fact, I am very seriously debating one of two actions - re-install Windows 7 or switching to an entirely different OS.

The reason for reverting to Windows 7/switching OS are as follows:
1) Currently with an idle system (i.e. no applications running at all), an svchost process is using anywhere from 40 to 60% of my cpu. When I did a tasklist on this process the following processes are attached to this one pid: Appinfo, BITS, Browser, DsmSVC, IKEEXT, iphlpsvc, LanmanServer, lfsvc, ProfSvc, Schedule, SENS, ShellHWDetction, Themes, UserMananger, Winmgmt, wuauserv. My question is this - is it necessary for these processes to be run. If they are, then am I looking at only being able to use 50% of my processor (since this one pid is using the rest of it)?

2) For a virus scanner - I am using McAffee and under Windows 7, it took my laptop 24 hours to scan 231 GB of data. Since I switched to Windows 10 (Same hardware, same memory, etc) it now takes my virus scanner over 48 hours to scan 231 GB of data.

3) If I had not been poking around and trying to change my update settings, I would never have found out that Microsoft expects their users to update the windows of the other users (Microsoft calls it Dynamic Updates). Now this is all well and good if some one had said something since I would have loved to know about it sooner since I am on a metered ... Read more

A:Poor Performance from Windows 10 - High CPU usage from SVCHOST

Something is not right with your installation. For comparison, with my idle system Task Manager shows 0% CPU use and 0% disk use for most of the time. Over a period of 1-2 mins it will jump to 50% for a few seconds on a number of occasions as it completes some task or other but then drops down again.

How did you install W10? Was it an upgrade via the Windows Update service or via an installation disk? Was it a clean install or did you choose to keep all your files and programs. I'm guessing it was the windows update route which has proved to be troublesome for some users.

As you are already thinking of a re-installation I would suggest you first try a clean install of W10. If you get it working correctly on your system it will be worth it.

Make sure you get the correct version/edition of W10 as an ISO download from the MS Tech Bench (this will make sure you get the latest build and avoid further updates) to match your original W7 version and proceed to install, skipping any activation steps as this will happen automatically once you are finished.

There are tutorials and many threads that run through this process for you on this site.

Seems I've gotten a bug over the past few weeks. I typically run AvastFree but seeing AvastSvc was consuming a lot of CPU resource, I uninstalled (using the Avast uninstaller through Safe Mode) prior to running FRST and posting this topic. In normal operation, CPU usage typically runs in the %-12%, sometimes 15% range during normal day to day usage. Now it's consistently in the 70%-90%, sometimes 100% range, when doing the same activities.
One other thing I've noted is I can't get into "Add/Remove Programs". A window opens when I click th elink out of COntrol Panel, but it never populates - although in the past it has always been slow to populate (30 secs to 1 minute), I've let it sit 5 minutes now without success. In the past, it would always populate while I was doing other things. It won't now.

As always, Thanks in advance!

I think this is a sata issue or a BIOS setting or perhaps just a Windows 8 bug...

Basically this happens:

I recently installed Windows 8 and finally some free time to get Steam installed. Installed Steam and am copying over my Steam directory (Disk 2, K) from my Win 7 to where I installed Steam this time (Disk 0, C). This is the same physical computer as I had Win 7 on prior.

What has changed since Win 7 is I thought since I was doing a fresh install, I would turn on AHCI in the BIOS and do it proper rather than IDE emulation or whatever it is called. But now crap like this happens. I googled a bit a week or 2 ago trying to figure it out and basically all that I could gather is either a hard drive is dying or it is an NCQ problem. Hard drive is not dying, I've ran plenty of diagnostics on it, and plus, it has less than 200 powered on hours at this point.

Now I turned off NCQ on ALL my drives just to see if the problem went away. It didn't, but I think it may have improved a little.

Device manager doesn't show any yellow "!" for anything.

Obviously this is completely unacceptable. Ideas on what to change to make it behave normally? Hopefully I'm missing something obvious, I've never used AHCI on a system before, mostly because when I had a system capable of it I was on XP and didn't want to load 3rd party drivers. Then for Vista and 7 I simply forgot before installing to switch it in the BIOS. I remembered this time for 8, ... Read more

I was gonna give you an updated AHCI driver from Intel but noticed you are running Core 2 Duos, so it probably wont be compatible. I am confused, does this occur in Win 7?

About a year ago, I noticed that my computer was running slow (both online and off) and that the explorer.exe process listed in the Windows Task Manager was usually running very high. Windows Explorer seemed to crash a lot as well. A few months ago, I attempted to install Kaspersky Internet Security 7.0 on my computer and before the install completed a warning window popped up saying something like 'there is already another instance of Kaspersky running' (which was not the case since this was the first time I had ever attempted to install Kaspersky software) and the install failed. When I rebooted my computer, I got the blue screen of death for a few seconds and then Windows booted with a message saying that Windows had recovered from a serious problem. Since recovering from whatever happened after the failed Kaspersky install, my computer is slower than ever and the Task Manager still shows a high CPU usage even though the System Idle Process is high and there isn't any processes listed that are using much CPU time at all.

I just scanned my system with the latest updated versions of AdAware, Spybot S&D, SuperAntiSpyware, and Avira AntiVir. All of them found nothing. I then cleaned my computer with CCleaner and ran HijackThis.

Hello,
This is Devendra from India. Recently I purchased Dell 15 3567 (i7,8GBRAM). After purchasing I notice that it performance it not good and in Task Manager the Disk usage is always high. I contact lots of time to different-different Dell Agents. Each time they try some solutions like Resetting PC setting, Refreshing OS image, by disabling background services, Replace Hard Drive but unfortunately the actual issue has not been detected and fixed yet. I've requested to them to send Dell engineer to my place to check the system, so exact issue can detect. But they can't help. It has been since a long time that I'm requesting. Can anyone please help me. My details are given below.

A:Inspiron 15-3567, Performance Issue, high disk usage

It's just about impossible to quantify the "performance it not good" element.  Relative to what?
It is very possible the CPU is simply outstripping the ability of the hard drive to keep up - in a system with a conventional, spinning hard drive, that will be the slowest element -- and this is a very low-end system.   It may well be you're running applications the system just isn't capable of running well.
A Dell engineer can only run the same diagnostics you can -- if your system shows no faults, you may want to consider either upgrading it to a solid state drive, or if it's new enough, upgrading to a more capable system than this low-end model provides.

After I returned from Holidays...I noticed that when I perform tasks that use considerable amount of CPU, the computer 'lags' and the sound seems to freeze. Each cycle being 1 sec long. It will continue to do so until I leave the computer and close CPU-consuming applications such as games, Media Players etc...It usually happens when I play games and watch movies though...

I initially thought that it was a virus so I scanned etc, then I thought it might be due to the CPU overheating, so I opened my machine and checked the CPU paste. It was fine no problems there. Then I checked the processes, nothing and finally arrived at System Resources where I saw that 'System Interrupts' was eating around 30 - 50% of my CPU. I have searched google and haven't come to a solution for this. I have updated my chipset drivers, graphic card drivers, sound drivers, Network card drivers, Motherboard etc. There is no effect whatsoever. It's really frustrating me as I can't even listen to music sometimes...I had used up all of my USB ports, so I tried taking some out, but there was no result...

When I restart it kind of calms down, but then it comes again. Even when I type in my password to enter Windows, the welcome sound freezes momentarily again. I have recently bought this system (custom built myself) so I'm really frustrated and cant think of a reason why this happens so suddenly

Any help will be greatly appreciated

A:Laggy performance during high usage - caused by System Interrupts

Welcome to SF, msjamalan!

If it's a virus or malware problem, please reboot into safe mode and run your scans. Malwarebytes should be your malware scanner.

If you have a lot of applications open at one time, you may want to bump up your memory.

You can also run msconfig and see if you can uncheck startup items. Be careful with this one.

Still, I wonder why this change has occurred after you have returned from vacation. Can you think of anything different before and after holidays?

My CPU Usage/Physical Memory both shoot up above 90%. I have uninstalled unnecessary programs, disabled many programs on start-up, and have run virus scans using different scanners, but nothing I've tried has helped. Can somebody please diagnose whether I have a virus?

I am running Windows 7 on a Samsung 900X (Intel Core i5-2467M CPU @ 1.60GHz, 4GB RAM, 64-bit OS).

Hi, I'm new here and I'm not good about any of these so please be detail.
My problem started when I installed a software that required me to use daemon tools. I did, eventhough I don't really know how it works (I just click and click). It is something about mounting and stuff. So I did, and the installation went okay.

After the next restart, windows started to find missing hardwares and asks me to install it, all 3 or 4 of them. I didn't at first, and realized my cpu usage gone to 50-60% without running anything. So I browsed forums, and it's not because of DMA reverted to PIO or stuff. I downloaded Process Explorer and noticed the hardware interrupts are the cause of this high cpu usage. I checked device manager, and found out that under the IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers, I have multiple channels. Before this, I only have 1 primary channel, 1 secondary channel and 1 standard dual channel PCI IDE controller but now I have 2 for each channel I stated. I suspect this is the problem, but I don't know how to deal with it, and I googled it, nothing similar ever came up.

I tried uninstalling, reinstalling and updating the drivers. Sometimes the hardware interrupts disappear and I don't know why, but the next restart will trigger the problem all over again.

I really don't know what to do and I hope someone could help me.

Thanks in advance.

A:Multiple IDE channels, Hardware interrupts, High CPU usage.

Daemon tools includes software to mount ISO files made from
CD's or DVD's so there original disk doesn't have to be in
the drive to use software like games.
It probably installed drivers to interface with the virtual drive.
You should be able to uninstall it from add/remove programs (XP)
or programs and features (vista and windows 7) in start/control panel.
What where you trying to do or install when this happened?

Hi,
I upgraded my ASUS UX302LG HDD (Windows 8.1 Pro) to a Samsung 840 EVO SSD today. I used the Data Migration software from Samsung to clone the existing HDD, then installed the SSD.
Although the laptop starts amazingly fast, the CPU now sits at 40-50%, and burns through my battery in about
45 minutes! In Process Explorer, no single process seems to be the culprit, other than the System Idle Process at 80-90%. I haven't installed any other software, malware, I simply cloned the drive.
I've been trying many things out all day, many reboots etc.
Is Windows 8.1 interacting with the SSD strangely? Perhaps there is a way I can use Process Explorer to provide more information? Is it normal to have the System Idle Process at 80-90%?
Appreciate the help in advance.

Without question this is the worst case I have seen in a long time and is related to your Office. Specifically a process called msosync.exe (you can read what that ishere)
As proof of concept you can kill that process (there are over 100 of them) in task manager as a temp solution and the problem should reduce or stop.  The trace has so many spikes it is difficult to see but there are dozens of the msosync.exe process running
(see snip)  Re-installing office should fix this permanently
Next...  Your ETDGesture.exe is part of ELAN Smart-Pad and developed by ELAN Microelectronics is also causing huge spikes.  Simply re-installing it should make this stop

After you solve the two above problems run another trace (shorter one so it wont be that big for you to upload) to see if there is anything else.

Hey Guys, this is my first post here.

Today I upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 8.1. For some reason, after upgrading, my hard disk usage is always hovering at around 60% usage and my CPU usage is always hovering at around 50%. This is when the PC is idle. When I was using 7, the disk would rarely jump over 30% usage and the CPU would never go above 7% when idle. The sound of the hard disk constantly working away is doing my head in, not to mention it's at around 50 degrees as opposed to 45 degrees previously.

Any help is greatly appreciated guys, thanks in advance.

A:High disk and CPU usage after upgrade.

How long since you upgraded? There is a lot of indexing and optimization that goes on after upgrade. Will be a lot of background activity for awhile.

And welcome!

Hi, I have recently built my own gaming PC but when I install games and other software it seems to take forever e.g. just installed COD5 and it took 55 Mins. Also when on the internet and in folders it can hang and not respond for a while and then after a minute or two it will start working again.
I have already done a memtest and that came back with no errors and I dont know what else to do.
My system specs are:
Asus P5K Premium Motherbaord
OCZ Reaper RAM 2GBx4 (8GB)
BFG NVIDIA GTX280 Graphics Card
Samsung Spinpoint F1 (1TB) Hard Drive
CoolerMaster 1000w Power Supply
Pioneer Blu-Ray Reader Drive

Please help me, with these computer specs this computer should be capable of doing loads of things at once. My laptop has less than half of these specs and it runs just as smooth if not better.

Ow ye, Also when playing games it is perfect, nothing wrong when playing them, just the installation

Ok first lets do a deep Temp and gentle Registry clean.

Run CCleaner http://www.ccleaner.com/download/builds (get SLIM at bottom no Yahoo toolbar)
Run twice or more on Cleanup temps, then on left click Registry then Scan for issues also repeat till clean.

Run ATF-Cleaner http://majorgeeks.com/ATF_Cleaner_d4949.html Temp and Registry, repeatedly until no more found.

KCleaner ftp://ftp2.kcsoftwares.com/kcsoftwa/files/kcleaner.exe
Fantastic cleaner. (When installing uncheck Relevant Knowledge do not install)

Run it click Analyze when complete click Clean.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Windows Cleanup (CleanMgr) utility for Temps and System Restore so do the below

Start-Programs-Accessories-System Tools-Disk- System Restore and create a new Restore point. Name it "Cleanup at TechSpot".

Then Start-Programs-Accessories-System Tools-Disk Cleanup
Click OK to accept C:
Select all Boxes
Then click More Options
Here click System Restore and OK to "Are you sure" and the OK to Run.

As this runs it clears all but the most recent Restore Point but it does one other thing that can contain infested files and a huge amount of disk space.

It clears what is known as Shadow copies which are used by specialized back up programs.

This is if you have the Volume Shadow Copy running which is the default.

Then do the below this should be an overall increase in performance.

What PROCESS in the Task Manager is consuming all that CPU time?

And when does this happen?

Post a HijackThis scanlog:

Download and install HijackThis using the "self extractor". Run it and select "do a system scan and save the log file". Then copy/paste the contents of the log to a reply

Hi forum.
Sometimes (not always), while I'm working on my XP box (running any kind of programmes, usually winamp, MS-Office2003, Flash MX 2004, Power DVD, Acrobat reader..etc), I sence a very slow performace, I run the task manager and the CPU usage is almost 50%. Even when I turn off all the programmes the CPU usage is still 50%.

I have updated my 2005 Norton Anti virus and performed a full system scan and the result was that there were no theats found. My XP Professional is up to date (Service pack 2) plus I usually run windows updater. The MS-Office 2003 is also updated (Service pack 1)

further information:

CPU: P4 ht 3.0 GHz
Ram: 512 MB
MB: Intel 915 PGN.

Any help is highly appreciated.

A:Slow performance (CPU usage 50%)

any idea what process is taking up that 50%?

If you know, you can check it against Process Library to make sure it's legit.

If not, you can try running the newest version of hijack this, and posting the results in the appropriate forum for the mad scientists there to decipher and help further :)

Hi,
My laptop(Win7) takes a long time to bootup. First it takes me to the windows logo screen and then it goes to a black screen and stays there for atleast two minutes before it gives me the login screen and then it takes another two minutes or so to before the desktop is loaded up. Also when I scan the computer with bitdefender for viruses, it takes around a day to do a full system scan and did not find any viruses. I have downloaded iobit driver updater and updated all the drivers, but that did not fix the problem. I have also installed iobit malware fighter and malwarebytes anti-malware and both scan came back negetive, The iobit performance monitor shows that the ram useage is 61% or higher all the time.

Any suggestions to fix this would be greatly appreciated

Thanks

(Pardon the botched title. Character limits suck.)

I have switched my previous processor (AMD A10-5800K APU with Radeon HD Graphics 3.80 GHz) to the processor that was in another computer (linux-fedora)(AMD A6-6420K APU with Radeon HD Graphics 4.0Ghz).

I have applied new thermal paste and temperatures idle at around 25C and under stress they don't exceed 55C (max safe is 70C). The processor seems to run anywhere between 1.8GHz to 4.3GHz at any given time (no overclock).

At this point I removed my previous GPU (EVGA SSC 01G-P4-3652-KR GeForce GTX 650 Ti 1GB 128-bit GDDR5) and installed it in the linux machine. I ran on the integrated graphics of the processor (the A6) without drivers for a couple days until my new GPU arrived.
Windows ran in what I suppose was software rendering making things look buggy and having the CPU run around at least 20% or more all the time (I was expecting this from running the integrated graphics without drivers).
Then I decided to play Minecraft with my friends and I had to install the AMD proprietary drivers. They did not help in the CPU usage department and I could not run my server without my friends lagging. Minecraft ran at about 10 FPS which seems odd to me as I'm pretty sure that the graphical capabilities of my APU are enough to run it decently better. But Aero was restored and dragging windows no longer created visual artifacts.

Then, the next day I received my new EVGA GeForce GTX 780 Superclocked 3GB 384-Bit GDDR5. I uninstalled all ... Read more

A:Upgrade GPU and CPU. CPU usage very high. GPU not perform as intended.

Maybe try a few simple things first, in your BIOS is the cpu unlocked? not sure if APU's have these features i only ever had i7's or AMD FX's, also is there an option to disable onboard graphics?

Secondly do you have a spare HDD or SSD floating around that you can try a fresh installation of windows on, in my past expereinces windows always hated me changing mobo's, cpu's, GPU's (cross brand) whenever i do significant hardware swaps i always start fresh with windows.

Try a CPU bench utility as it seems this is where your having most problems, this could also cause your gpu to under perform as the cpu could be bottlenecking.

I'm trying to help my father with his laptop (older HP 6735s running Vista). It's running very slow even with basic programs like Outlook and Firefox. I think I have pinpointed it to this svchost.exe process (see Process Explorer screenshot), but it won't let me kill or even access the file.

Right clicking on the svchost.exe process and viewing the Threads tab shows the following:

CPU usage stays around 99-100% all the time. I have Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, SUPERAntiSpyware, and TrendMicro HijackThis tools installed but need help utilizing them in order to resolve this issue. Logging on as the Administrator has the same issue. Something is hogging a ton of computer resources and I need help figuring it out. I keep suggesting it may be time to retire this machine but he just uses it for the basics (internet, email, etc.).

Thanks.

A:High CPU usage...must have malware or is it time to upgrade?

I see at least 3 reasons why that HP Compaq 6735s Notebook PC is running slow:

1. It has an AMD Sempron SI-40 2.00 GHz single core processor - which is the weakest of the available processors that model notebook comes with.

2. Its C: drive is 99% full.

3. It has a large number of running processes.

----------------------------------------------------------------

What that notebook really needs is a reinstall of its operating system and a fresh start.

Unfortunately, Windows Vista will be going "extinct"(like Windows XP already has) in a few months, so doing that wouldn't accomplish much.

I just recently installed a fresh version of XP, no more than a month or so ago. Unfortunately I share this PC with a brother, and I cannot monitor what he does on this machine. I feel that he has destroyed my PC once again, and I am sick and tired of reformatting/reinstalling. Perhaps someone here can help?

My problem is extremely slow performance, and taskmanager shows 95-100% cpu consumption almost all of the time. Even as I type in this textbox the system is lagging. I've used Spybots S&D, but no luck. any ideas? I read some of the threads on the forums and noticed people have copied the logfile from "Hijackthis" so I have downloaded it and done the same.

Lately in the last couple of months my computer has gotten slower and slower. When I first boot up my HDD light will flash solid for like 7-10 minutes. When I open resource monitor there's only like 4-5 MB/s rate, but the disk queue hovers between 5 and 10 which is insanely high. It's a wonder things won't load.

I've run Malwarebytes Antimalware, TDSSKiller, Combofix (which won't run in normal mode), housecall etc. usually they find nothing but there's obviously something wrong here.

Somebody pointed out to me that HDD usage and Network usage caused by Rootkits can be hidden from the Microsoft Resource Monitor, which would explain the behaviour that I'm seeing.

Sometimes quicker to re start the pc as it effectively freezes. Would like to be sure that the symptoms are not about malware etc and not just a function of the age of the pc. Have used disk clean up and deleted temp/ old files eetc using Norton utilities. AV scans show up only minor issues such as tracking cookies. Also Spybot used from time to time - nothing worrying shows up.
Have posted details of the system and logs below.

Hello Everyone,

I am using a pc at home. The pc which I am using is 2 and a half years old. So far I didn't have major problems with my system. Couple of months ago I installed a new hard drive, thus installed windows again and have been using it without issues.

Before starting I would like to give you information about my pc. Config is -

-Intel Pentium D 3 GHZ
-Nvidia Geforce 8500GT (latest display drivers)
-2 GB RAM
-Creative Sound card
-Windows XP Media Center Edition (SP3)
-LCD monitor and usual stuff...
-AVG 8 (Free edition)

I keep my pc upto date with latest windows updates & stuff. Off late I am experiencing problem with my system. Few days ago I had copied some avi files from my system to my friend's hard disk (removable) via usb. I dont know the
problem is becoz of that or something else.

Basically when I boot my pc and login into windows I see my process (PF Usage) is high. Usually its around 290MB at startup. But off late it shot upto 1.2 GB and then once to 320MB and so on. Moreover sometimes after boot i saw iexplore.exe in the taskmanager process list. I had not even started IE. I scanned my pc using avast home edition. Successfully removed file "rs32net.exe" and i thought i m okay.

I am attaching several screenshots. Some indicate AVG giving popups that following files are infected with trojans. One of the files couldnt even be found. Another screen shot indicates svchost.exe using 347 MB of memory.

For the past couple of weeks surfing on the web has slowed down to a crawl
as if the cpu usage is very high, but it's not. Even at 5% it's really slow when on line.
Offline, it performs well.
Virus scans are clean and running FF with add ons disabled isn't much help.
IE8 pretty much freezes.
Flash is up to date, but videos in any news items don't work at all, but you tube is OK.

My work PC's already 4 years old and it's a DIY desktop, not a branded one. And since the day I bought it till now, I've been very keen on avoiding all kinds of trouble, especially viruses. But last night, actually it's been a week, a lot of things had been going on with it from problems with the network icon loading times, long post boot times, recurring browser redirects, to almost 82 proxy entries (Wpad related) in my registry. My latest DDS scan also revealed I have more than 50 domain listings??? I managed to clean the 82 proxies but I think there are still remnants. I can only do much as my knowledge permits, hope someone here can help. Attached here are my scans. Thank you very much in advance.

RELEVANCY SCORE 62

Hello, this is my first post on this forum - if I am not using it correctly, please direct me where to put this so that I can get help with this issue.

Since I gave my wife my old computer, it has gone down in performance quality dramatically over time.  I had chocked it up to the hard drive getting old (the hard drive is about 4 years old at this point, while the rest of the computer is over 6 years old), but she insisted there was a virus.  I ran a bunch of tuneup programs and ran a malware scan using IOBit Malware Fight, and nothing seemed amiss.

What convinced me the other day that this is in fact a virus is that the computer performs normally if the wireless adapter is disabled.  We also noticed some additional processes showing up on startup, which seem suspect.  A google search of these symptoms led me to this site, where users were being instructed to run FRST for a complete list of issues.  I did this scan, but was unsure of how to proceed, and it appears that the procedure for fixing the issues varies from user to user, so rather than try to use the fixlist on my own, I thought it would be wiser to post here.  Attached are the log files created by FRST on my initial scan.

Thanks very much,
Brenden
