computer shows no sign of life

Q: computer shows no sign of life

not really sure where this goes, but i figured this would be the best place out of all the others

so last night (or rather this morning at 12.08am) i set my fujitsu t580 to sleep before i went to sleep myself.

this morning, i woke up to find that its power lights weren't on despite being plugged in to a charger (which is confirmed to be connected to a working power supply as the router connected to the same extension cable is still working) and it did not respond at all to me flicking the power switch

i've tried the ol' method of getting rid of residual static (disconnect all power sources, hold power button for a minute); doesn't work. my finger was on that switch the entire time my phone was loading the "new thread" page which is no small duration

i'm quite sure it's not the power supply; my battery still had a pretty fresh lifespan of 2hours (at least for a 2.5 year old battery) last i checked a month ago and i doubt that could've depleted overnight while the comp was asleep. can't test the charger though because stupid fujitsu made a charger with a plug that doesn't fit any of the other non fujitsu laptops around the house

a little background info of my lappy: got it about april 2011, been showing signs of some fan trouble since about june last year but i only bothered to clean the fan in sept this year after fan errors started popping up. since then, comp has shown no signs of trouble other than general signs of age (low fps in games) and a slightly noisy fan; certainly no signs of motherboard failure such as random reboots or bsods

i've done some cursory googling and this does sound like a motherboard issue though. if so, what could've caused it to happen overnight?

i live in singapore (practically on the equator) so overheating is a very real possibility but i doubt it happened overnight after my comp went to sleep

i'm prepared to send this to the repair shop; less prepared to buy a new laptop, but i'd like to first check with real experts whether there's anything i can do at any rate

thanks for reading and for any help!

Preferred Solution: computer shows no sign of life

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A:laptop won't power on and shows no sign of life

I'm not an expert in dismantling or repairing laptops, but it's my guess that something got disconnected or damaged during the process.

Just in case you need it, here is the support site for the Toshiba Satellite P55W-B5112 15.6" Touchscreen Laptop.

Running support for someone, when they hit the power button it flickers to life for a second but doesn't post. However a good sign is that the mobo has a light on it that is nice and lit I know that it can be a mounting problem, or a faulty PSU, or even that the thermal paste on the CPU/Heatsink sitting could be messed up.

Am I missing things to look for?
Also could someone please explain to me how to properly do the 'short the pins' PSU test as I'm a wee bit confused on that.

Hi

My PackBell Easynote E2 has had enough of my 13yr old daughters MSN , pics AND MUSIC from her phone and has given up on me!!

When I turn it on I get the PB screen then instead of loading Windows I get a menu for starting the system; either in XP Home Edition or Windows Recovery Console, if I do nothing it tries to load in XP and then all I get is a black screen with a black and white bar at the bottom! I can't even start in safe mode and none of the lights (where the CAPS LOCK and NUM LOCK buttons are) are doing anything. IS MY BABY DEAD????

Tried to load in Recovery Console mode and then realised I didn't know the Administrator password. Did press F2 and got into Admin password bit and it asked me for new password but where it said old password looked very dim (a bit like me LOL) LIKE THERE WASN'T AN OLD PASSWORD!?!.

Can anyone tell me what has happened and also, even better; how to fix it.

Thanx

Kathy

A:PB EasyNote - No Sign of Life!!!

Have you just tried hitting enter when it asks you for the admin password?

Generally unless you've set one on a home PC, then there isn't one set.

If you can get in to rc like that, select the c:\windows option and when it prompts you 'c:\windows>' type chkdsk /p /r

Once its complete type exit and reboot. If that doesn't fix it post back.

I recently bought a pretty old used Laptop (specifically, an ancient Toshiba Tecra 720CDT).
It didn't come with it's own DC adapter, so I ended up connecting wires from a stripped adapter onto the jack.
The only sign of life I got here was having the battery LED turn on (yellowish colour), only to turn off again a second later.
This only actually happened when I held down the on button.

I figured that it was simply trying to charge, but the wires couldn't be connected to the laptop long enough, so I took the thing apart and replaced the jack on the PSU to fit one of my many standard sized adapters.
Turning it on, I got the exact same thing.
The seller's telling me that it worked fine before he sent it to me.

When I go to power the PC nothing happens I have tried unplugging and plugging in the front panel connectors to see if that was the issue, I bought a whole new ac adapter, and this was happening with my original psu, so I bought another and it worked for a day then stopped again, when it was on all of my parts were working correctly. I even replaced the CMOS battery but still no luck, I was hoping to see if you guys had any ideas before I spend 70 on a tech to fix it.

Hey everyone,

My laptop (i'm not sure the make or model matters) suddenly died, it was working fine one minute, left the room for around 30 seconds, came back and has seemingly has no power. The machine has been running purely off the power adapter because there is no battery. There's no lights on, indicating an electrical connection; it's completely dead. I used a phase tester to confirm a good power adapter, so the problem seems to be with the computer. I don't think the electrical input socket (?) is at fault cos it's not loose.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Maybe it has something to do with that internal coin-shaped battery?

I'd really appreciate any help because i'm completely at a loss as to what i should do next...

Thanks!

Could be a dry joint on power connector, underside motherboard try wiggling to see if you get some response, coin battery is only to retain CMOS information.

Did you go to the manufacture of your laptop website and update all your driver? Mainly chipset, video, and audio drivers?

Did this issue start recently before the fresh install or has it always been a problem since you had the laptop?

I bought this for my father 18 months ago and he only used it to play flight sim. He passed about a year ago and the PC was working fine, but was powered down since then. I tried turning it on this morning and nothing happened. No lights, no display, but when I opened it up (to try removing CMOS battery) I heard a quiet but continous beeping. It was on a surge protector and never had problems with power surges at his house. Removing CMOS battery and holding power button didn't work. Thanks,Floyd C.

I've been using Windows 10 for just over one year. For some reason the Lock Screen/Sign-in screen shows three users. All three are me in three iterations. I find also that when trying to save some excel and word documents I receive messages saying that i am not allowed to save to this folder or that folder. I am able to save to the desk top and then drag and drop the document into the folder that I need to place it in. I know that this must have something to do with "permissions". Not sure how to fix that. One of the accounts that shows up is the initial account that I created back when hotmail.com was around. Any ideas/advice on these issues? When i updated to Windows 10, pretty certain that i followed all of the instructions, although that has been over 1 year now. Thank you in advance...cheers and beers to all!

You have recently removed one or more virusus from this computer, but now a new one has appeared.

First, AOL is extremely slow to start when I click on the icon. Once I've signed on, after a time a new sign-on screen appears on top of what I'm doing. I cancel that one. Soon I see activity at the bottom of the screen (where ordinarily you see "Done" or "//http:/..." etc. The virus is doing its own AOL activity! Soon afterward AOL is canceled, as if I had canceled it.

Also, Microsoft XP suddenly announces they are having to increase my virtual memory. Paging size is currently at 384 Mb, and my RAM is 1.25 GB. This is happening more and more frequently.

I have again changed my AOL sign-on password, and I no longer permit it to use the password automatically (I have to enter it at each sign on).

Thanks for any help you can provide.

To all owners of X1 Carbon 2017 (5th gen).I read all of those reviews where people are impressed by 10+ hours of battery life (15,5h advertised), but I can't really figure out how....!? First time I tested was a normal working day - Firefox (a lot of Flash it must be said), Outlook, Word, Excel, Adobe Acrobat. Nothing really heavy, no peripherals except Bluetooth mouse. Brightness dimmed 1 level below the ideal. It lasted for about 4 hours! I windows's list of apps affecting battery life, Firefox was on 1st place with 32-35% Second attempt - same set of tasks, however less Firefox (no flash) - 7 hours. Now in the middle of a 3rd attempt (using Opera this time) - battery time remaining indication goes over 10h only when I completely stop using the laptop Not many apps running in the background either (Dropbox, Skype...) So my question - do you guys get more than 10h of battery life and HOW? Do you enable "Battery Stretch"? How actively do you use it and for what?

W hen you say the computer is more or less brand new - is it your computer - by purchase, albeit the user account on the computer is a Microsoft account in the name of your ex-boyfriend.
By that I mean do you have proof of your ownership of the computer.
If so it is probably best to refer the problem to the supplier - explaining the position to them.
They being able to establish your ownership of the computer should be able to assist you

After having done the update, I'm having two issues that are bugging me:

1. I cannot change the lock screen from the "cave by the shore" default nor bypass it (Brink is working on the bypass issue I believe)

2. If I go into netplwiz and uncheck the need for a password, the "Welcome" screen has the system default user picture, that drawing of a circle over an arch, not the picture I assigned to the account. With the need for a password, the picture on both the sign-in screen and "Welcome" screen is correct tho.

The lock screen issue I can live with since I normally don't use a password, but the default user picture is bugging me. I went into %ProgramData%\Microsoft\User Account Pictures and replaced all the default pictures with ones the same name and size of the picture that I have for the account, but it still shows the default.

I've searched around for another place where the default picture is, but cannot find any, even with the search including hidden system files.

Anybody know where the system default user pictures are stored, other than in the User Account Pictures?

Q2) I'm not aware of way to stop this yet when you have netplwiz set to automatically sign in to an account at startup. The blue note box at the top of the tutorial below will show you the default locations for account pictures to help.

Our computers in my family typically don't last very long (usually only 2-3 years) before breaking down.

I don't want to go into any long, detailed discussions about why they broke, but I would definitely appreciate any general tips (nothing detailed) ya'll might have on how to keep a computer working longer... maybe just some dos and dpn'ts for operating a computer.

Thanks a lot!

Easy enough. I've built a computer prior to this. Not even close and I want to stab my eyes out.

So my brother and I put it all together and powered up. everything ran great. Lights, HDs, burner, keyboard, mouse, monitor light stayed orange. RGB no input signal flashed onscreen and that was that. Here is some of the EVERYTHING I have tried.
I took the PCI-E graphics card and drove 2 hrs to try it in a friends computer. It worked.

I tried my monitor on someone else's PC. It worked.

I tried a different monitor on mi... Read more

What is the life expand of a computer? This is kinda a vague question perhaps. I have read somewhere in the past its about 6 years, and as little as 4 years

I have a Compaq bought 4 years ago, apparently the power supply and or the motherboard is gone. Its a shame because its a PEN4,2.2mhz speed,200GB(added)1GB memory. It will cost just one $70-120 to find out whats wrong..then the 'mystery cost' to repair. Of course to get another computer it would only be a couple of hundreds dollars more.

i was happy with the computer, simple fast interneting and streaming audio stuff. To me it was still a state of the art computer

Hi,

My PC worked good for about two years before it started making a very loud noise and eventually stopped working. Turns out the fan wasn't working on the graphics card GT230, which made it heat and get damaged, and the harddrive also was damaged.

They repaired it and replaced the GT230 with a GT430 and a new harddrive. It's working fine for now but I can sort of hear a bit of noise and when I feel the computer it is slightly trembling. Not as bad as before but it is.

So it has me worried: what if it does that again? What can I do to help prolong the life of my PC? I put it to sleep when it's not in use by my sister uses it almost all day for casual stuff like microsoft word, though I use it maybe an hour or so a day for gaming.

If you want to keep an eye on temperatures, this is a good one to download.
CPUID - System & hardware benchmark, monitoring, reporting I keep mine open most of the time and you can check everytime you are at your pc on temperatures.

Okay, two days ago I asked one of my friend's to bring her computer to my house, so I could fix it. So, she came yesterday and I thinking that I'd be able to fix it.. Turns out, she has the slowest computer I have ever seen.

I first turned on the computer, every thing seemed fine.. It took about 40 minutes, maybe more, to start up and load the desktop, etc.. (I'm not use to these loading times.. My computer restarts and loads in about 3 minutes.)

So, after the desktop finished loading, which might I add, I was going insane by then, since I have little or no patience. I tried some things, yet these damn programs kept on popping up.. Like Windows Live Messenger and Aliant's Net Assistant, which is her ISP's on-demand internet helper and troubleshooter.

So, after end tasking everything that loaded (which was about 5 LARGE programs), I decided to go on internet explorer with my own internet. I go on Google, then it freezes and restarts!

So, another 40 minutes to waste to get the desktop to load.. So I got mad, I restarted it numerous times and tried many things.. Then, my brother walks in and says "Hey, why not try safe mode"..

So, I thought I found the correct solution to fixing her computer. Turns out, safe mode was a lot more faster and I was able to clean up her computer with a program that she already had and I cleared almost 5 GB on her 9 GB hard drive. I also scanned with Spy Sweeper while on safe mode and I must say it was pretty im... Read more

I want to extend the life of my computer as much as possible, of course. Along this line of thinking, what can I do to limit the stress on my CPU? I.e. when not using it should I turn it off, put it in standby/hibernate, or leave it on? I assume there is stress on the cpu during turn off and turn on times, as well as during normal operation.

A:Everytime I download an image or file on my computer it shows up on my computer

Hi and welcome,
I think your downloads are saving to desktop (the screen). What web browser are you using (Internet Explorer or Firefox or ...).
With that info it should be possible to help you change the default download location.

Thanks.
Richard.

My problem originated when I was updating updating Zone Alarm for my Windows XP OS. My computer was turned off halfway through the update. It runs through the normal load page, but then right before I am prompted by the sign on screen a blue screen appears. Any subsequent attempt to turn my computer on in normal mode results in a blue screen with the error message... IRQL_NOT_LESS_EQUAL Technical information: STOP: 0x0000000A (oxE1C35008, 0x00000002, 0x00000001, 0x805A667A)I then turn my computer back on, hit F8 to enter the advanced options menu, and click on Safe mode. I then select Microsoft Windows XP Professional. The screen just sits there with a blank sign on background, but I am never prompted by the sign on menu. It will sit there for hours without change.I then manually turn my computer off, and start it again in the advanced options menu. I selected Last Known Good Configuration for Windows XP Professional. The next screen to show up is the loading page, and then the blue page appears again with the same message as before. Please help!!! Thank you.P.S. How do i set up my computer to need a password just to sign on, I have 3 grown adult kids that come over while i am at work and download music and videos and i would like to keep anyone from using my computer but me. So can you tell me how to set it up to need a password just to get the computer on

A:password to sign computer on

What version of Windows are you using? If it is a Vista computer, you go to control panel>User accounts and Family Safety>change your Password.
I'm not sure for other versions, but it will probably be something saying password, users, or accounts in the control panel. Just follow the instructions.

By the way, If you are using Vista, you might want to make a new account for your grown kids with Parental controls set, so they can still use it for what you want them to.
