Seagate 7200.12 NTFS Save Files/Save Hard Disk

Q: Seagate 7200.12 NTFS Save Files/Save Hard Disk

I have a number of files I would like to try and save off of the disk, and/or I would like to know if there is any saving the hard drive for future use. I record music and use adobe programs for freelance artwork. Also there are a number of pictures I'd love to recover (though as far as I know they're backed up on google drive). The .wavs of some recordings were recent and were not backed up in time before the disk crashed.

I apologize, this is lenghty but i'll throw it all out there.

As best as I can remember this is the sequence of events:
My daughter was born three weeks ago, my wife decided to pop in a usb thumbdrive to save baby pictures to my pc (Dell Optiplex755 refurbished, Win7 32 bit, Intel dual core processors, Seagate 7200.12 Barracuda 1TB hardrive).

A few pictures, unknown to me at the time, were corrupted wither on the flashdrive or the camera's memory card.

After she moved the pictures to the computer it froze, and she restarted.

Windows Desktop Manager crashed, and CPU in task manager was at 100% always.

I ran an error check, and four files were found to be corrupt and fixed (3 photos, 1 reaper file, and 1 system 32 file. (I'm an idiot and I didn't write down the system 32 file.)

After error check, I noticed a yellow exclamation next to optiplex in devices, and I was notified that the driver for my intel processors was not compatible suddenly with windows. I tried to download new optiplex drivers but chrome and internet explorer would freeze as soon as I tried to leave my homepage, (google and msn.com)

I tried to find a system restore point but was told none existed on anything.

System froze while trying to find the drivers again from dell, and I had to shut down.

upon restart windows update decided to kick on and tried to install updates, and all hell broke loose.
Windows won't start at all now, not even in safe mode. Ran startup repair 4 times and was told it could not repair.

At this point I got a SATA hard disk reader from a friend, and was able to attach to my laptop and recover 80% of my files. The other files/folders were a cyclic redundancy error. (one of the folders was the folder with the baby pictures in it, the others were a completely different photo folder and my reaper files on two albums)

I ran a chkdsk on the drive and got unreadable on files 600-703, 1217-1500 and every file after 3000.
windows setup a chkdsk on startup, and now the disc says NTFS, and will not open. chkdsk tells me the drive is RAW now.

I tried Recuva to no avail.

Any and all suggestions would be greatly appreciated, I'd like to save as many files as possible obviously though I'm nervous that bird flew the coup long ago.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

It almost sounds like you got some malware from that USB stick.

If you have a friend with a Linux computer, or have access to one, you can often hook up a non booting drive and recover files that way. I don't know the exact procedure but something like this may help, too:

Emergency Kit - save your files from a dead OS

A few months ago (enough to void my warranty) I purchased a 250gb Seagate portable external hard drive. Since then I've seen how poor the drive really is encased in cheap metal it has received many dings. Now however it has become unusable as the USB connection has become loose meaning the connection has to be held in place constantly or it is lost.

I have been looking at enclosures as a possible fix to the connection problem (such ashttp://www.amazon.co.uk/IOMAX-External-Enclosure-Laptop-Powered/dp/B001EEQQ8Q/).

Would this solve the loose USB connection and ideally the bad quality casing? Or is there a far easier fix that I'm missing?

DRIVE SPEC:

Seagate FreeAgent Go 250 GB USB 2.0 Portable External Hard
2.0 USB connection interface, 5 year manufacturer warranty, 256 bit encryption security software for maximum digital file privacy, Windows XP / Vista compatible.

If I've left any details out just ask, this is my first post so be kind

OK, I have run out of ideas and things to check. I have a 90gb hard drive (internal), it's got about 45gb free. I have defragged, I have deleted tons of temp files, and other files, etc. Still I cannot save or move a 190 KB sized file. I keep getting 'not enough free space on the disk' message.

This is already an NTFS device, and the file doesn't exceed a fat32 size anyway, so that's not the issue I am facing.

I have closed down all programs, except the app I am using to try to create and then save this file (it's like Microsoft Office, plain text or excel file format just using Sun's StarOffice instead), I have rebooted numerous times all to no avail.

Anybody have any other ideas on why I am still getting this message and cannot save any files?? Any help or info greatly appreciated.

Okay, so I have gotten into video editing and recently made a huge family video. . . it was over 4 gigabytes in size so when I tried to transfer it to my external hard drive which was formatted with Fat32 it said it couldn't do it because it was over the 4 gigabyte single file limit. So, I transferred all of my stuff onto my OTHER external hard drive, formatted the FAT32 hard drive with NTFS and transferred everything back to it. Now I can't save any changes to any text documents, word documents. . . and I'm sure the problem will run deeper. I'm guessing that it has something to do with me switching the Filing system from FAT32 to NTFS, but my I don't have enough knowledge about the matter to fix this. That's where you guys come into the picture! What do I need to do to be able to edit/save all my text docs, word, docs, etc. I can make new files, edit and save them, I just can't edit and SAVE any documents created before the FAT32-NTFS format switch. Help me out. Thank you!
P.S. I posted below the typical message I get when I edit a file and then try to save it.

Hello,

I converted a FAT32 secondary partition to NTFS using convert.exe. The process was smooth but after it's done I cannot delete/save/move files or folders on that new NTFS partition. I can see/open all the files and folders and I can copy to another FAT32 partition. I have Windows XP Home and I'm logged in as a Limited user.

When I try to delete a file I get "Please remove the write protection". I tried to change the account type to admin and I was able to delete/save/move.

If I create a new file or folder as a limited user I can delete/save/move. I guess I lost ownership on the files and folders that were there before the NTFS conversion. Anything created after is mine though.

I don't want to be logged in as admin. I wish there's a way to make it work under a Limited user.

Please help.

Thanks!

Ramkre

The computer involved is using Windows 7 Pro 64bit and Office Professional Plus 2010.

I am having a problem I cannot find a solution to. I have one user at a clients location that has recently stopped being able to save excel files in their my documents. The my docs is being redirected to a server. The files open correctly and can be edited, but when save is clicked an error box says the document not saved. Using cntrl-shift-i I found the error code to be 100490. I can open any other file and save them just fine. And any new excel documents can be opened and saved correctly. The file can be saved into the same folder using save as is and the document is renamed. However, the user cannot erase the old file.

Doing some digging I made sure the trust zone was enable for the network path and trusted locations on a network were allowed. They had already been configured.

I checked for the windows update that microsoft reported could fix this problem and it was not installed. I went ahead and tried the hotfix, but it would not run because of the missing update.

I tried changing permissions and ownership. This where it gets strange the user has full control enabled on the folder. On any other folder or file I can right click and view the security tab. However, on the excel files when I click the security tab a red line is displayed that says "This file is currently not available for use on this computer." You might be out of luck. Have you got another drive you could install your OS to? If you do you might get lucky putting the failed drive on a slave and trying to copy some important documents. A long shot. Check with the manufacturer, most drives have quite long warranty periods. You'll need their diagnostics to test the drive before you send it back. Look for warranty info on their site, the instructions are simple and quite specific.

1) What is the advantage of saving backup to an external drive?

2) I save my daily scheduled backups to an internal drive, am I safe?

3) I heard the advantage of saving backups to external drive is because ""a shock to the case can potentially kill all internal drives, primary and backup. A lightning strike, even on a surge protected system, can burn out all the internal hard drives. A system with poor or no surge protection can be killed by power spikes, voltage spikes, and other irregularities." (source: Backup data to internal or external location? ? How-To Geek Forums )
Did anyone ever experience all their internal hard disk being killed at once?

4) If I am using an external hard disk connected to the desktop via a USB cable, when a lightning strike/surge/power spike happens, will it still kill my external hard disk since the external hard disk is still connected to the desktop via USB cable?

Thanks

A:Is it really better to save backups to an external hard disk

If you plug in your external drive via USB and leave it connected, for all intents and purposes, it becomes an internal drive. The way you should use an external drive for backup purposes is to connect it, run your backup, disconnect, store in a safe place away from the computer. If your data is critical to you, you want to store your backup drive in another location (such as a safe deposit box in a bank).

If you do your backups to an internal drive or to a permanently attached external drive and your computer gets stolen, you lose all of your data as well. If your computer is destroyed by fire, flood, lightning, etc... you lose all of your data. Insurance can replace your computer, can it replace your data?

You may want to continue backing up to an internal drive on a daily basis but add regular backups to an external drive on a weekly basis and store that drive in another location. How often you backup depends on how much data you generate and how important the loss of any of the data would be. For instance, let's say you do your weekly backups to the external drive on Saturday. Then you work on your computer all week but the computer is stolen or destroyed on Friday evening along with your internal backup. The remotely saved backup would be a week old so you would lose the data for that week. Is the loss of a week's data acceptable? If not, then more frequent backups are required.

If you are using IE:
Use a registry editing tool to navigate to the following key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer

Insert a value with the following details:
Data Type: SZ
Value Name: Download Directory
Value: Full path of directory you wish to use.

If you are wanting to do this for MS Word , go to tools -> options (within word), and the File Locations tab.

I'm sure you can do it for other applications either through their options/prefs or through the registry.

Hi all

Just a stupid little problem with W7 I noticed which is VERY confusing but simple to fix.

I changed via the dialog the TEXT SIZE via the screen resolution in the control panel to CUSTOM SIZE.

With one of the newer "Cinema" or Very Wide screen (1680 X 900) displays after I'd increased the text size to over 160 % I didn't get the possibility to SAVE any documents any more via the SAVE AS button. The SAVE dialog would appear but the SAVE button was missing.

The effect was noticed in Office 2007 (all programs) Notepad etc etc.

Seems to be a Windows fault as this should not be allowed to happen.

on more traditional "Squarer" type monitors -- no problem.

I couldn't find the answer by googling but a bit of "trial and Error" fixed the problem.

Seagate has issued an official statement today, acknowledging all recent problems with some Barracuda 7200.11 drives. Based on the information posted in the company's forums here, select Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 1TB 3.5-inch hard drives made in Thailand, suffer from a firmware issue that bricks the HDDs after a short period of time. After three to five months of normal operation these defective hard drives will suddenly lock-up as a protective measure and prevent the system from recognizing the drive from then onwards. In most cases the information won't be lost, but the drive will be completely useless, changing the drive's electronics won't help much either. This problem occurs not only to the 1TB Barracuda models, but to Seagate 1.5TB, 640GB, 500GB, 320GB and 160GB Barracuda 7200.11 drives, along with some Maxtor and ES.2 models. That's pretty disturbing, but now Seagate will provide its customers with an updated firmware if their drive is problematic.

Here's the full statement from the company's spokesman Mike Hall:
Seagate has isolated a potential firmware issue in certain products, including some Barracuda 7200.11 hard drives and related drive families based on this product platform, manufactured through December 2008. In some circumstances, the data on the hard drives may become inaccessible to the user when the host system is powered on*.

I got a new windows 10 laptop a few weeks ago and I'm belatedly getting around to creating a system recovery disk on usb. I'm intending to use the standard windows 10 option 'create a recovery drive'. Someone mentioned that among other things this would be useful if I ever wanted to sell the machine on further down the line and wanted to do a clean install.

My question is, does the standard recovery disk save personal data because I've already loaded some music, docs, notes vids and added a few browser bookmarks etc. Basically I'm hoping it doesn't because I wouldn't want to pass anything on. (I already do 2 separate backups of my personal stuff in case of failure, so that's not an issue)

On a new PC - I would highly recommend that you > Create a Recovery Drive..
This will save the Factory Image to a USB - so if ever needed, you can re-install the factory Out Of Box setup..
That recovery drive will NOT contain any personal programs or files...

To backup the current state of your PC - Programs, Files, settings, etc..

Until today my computer, running Windows XP Home Edition, had two user accounts; one for my mother (titled "Nancy Loury") and one for me (titled "Kev"). However I found myself simply using my mothers more often and saw having two accounts when both of us really only use one as redundant. So I decided to delete the Kev user account. The account had all of my very important files in it under My Documents. When I went to delete the account, it of course asked me if I wanted to save the contents of the My Documents folder for the Kev account under a folder labeled "Kev" on the Nancy Loury user's desktop. I of course did want to save them, so I clicked "Save Files", the account was deleted, and on the desktop is the file labeled "Kev" which, according to the system, should hold all the contents of the My Documents from the Kev account. I clicked on the folder and to my horror I found that it was completely empty; the system had not saved a single one of the files in My Documents like I had asked it too and like it said it would do. Nothing is there.

I've no idea why this happened, all I know is I'm extremely upset about this. What do I do to recover the files from the now deleted My Documents?

I've tried it all.
I gave up the project and just tried to make a movie from just a single picture i draw in mspaint, but still no success.

Then I am about to finish the movie and pressing the final button to start to render it I just get a message that says "Windows Movie Maker cannot save the movie to the specified location. Verify that the original source files used in your movie are still available, that the saving location is still available, and that there is enough free desk space available, and then try again"

I use Windows Vista Home 32bits.

Hope you have any idea of what the problem could be, Thank you alot.

With the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update, you can access your saved files in OneDrive just like any other file on your PC without filling up your disk space. Easily tell which files are available online only or offline. Online-only files download on demand with a double-click, and you can make them online only again to free up space ? or, you can select files to always be available offline.

When you turn on Files On-Demand, you?ll see all your files in File Explorer and get new information about each file. New files created online or on another device appear as online-only files, which don?t take up space on your device. When you?re connected to the Internet, you?ll be able to use the files like every other file on your device.

Here?s how to turn on Files On-Demand:
Make sure you?re signed into OneDrive on your device. Right-click the OneDrive cloud icon in the notification area, at the far right of the taskbar, and select Settings ? or, select Start, and search for OneDrive.

On the Settings tab, select the Save space and download files as you use them box.

Make a file online-only to save space, and make a file always available offline so it?s always with you:

Right-click a file or folder, and select Always keep on this device or Free up space.

Head over here to learn more about OneDrive Files On-Demand and how to enable it, or here for how to get the Fall Creators Update. Have a great week!

As the title says, I will be installing windows 7 (maybe home premium) on a hard disk without any OS, but with lots of files in it.
How do I do it without my files getting deleted?

I have experiences about saving files when installing a new OS, but only with an existing OS on the same disk. (The windows.old thingy) but I have no idea when doing a fresh install.

I don't have any spare hard drives or large external hard drives hanging, so this is my only choice. I really need to save those files, at the same time installing an OS. Help me please. Thanks!

My father is going to buy a new computer and doesn't know how to back up his e-mails in Microsoft Outlook 2007 to a USB drive or external medium so he can transfer them to the new computer afterwards. I myself use Thunderbird, and I don't want to fumble around with Outlook on his computer and end up deleting something by mistake.
So how are e-mails in Microsoft Outlook 2007 saved to a medium (whether internal or external)?
Thank you in advance for your help!

Hi there,

So following is the step by step explanation of what happened:

- Copied all my data from Laptop to Seagate HDD

- Re-installed a fresh copy of windows 7 Ultimate.

- Tried copying all the Data back to laptop, some data had no issues in copying but some was not copying.
Issue: I can not copy some data and Can not even open them for ex. I do see the video file but can not run it.
Error: When i try to open the file it says i need to have Administrator rights to run that file.

- What i have tried to fix it and failed:
1. Tried changing the permissions for all users and for the current user (The administrator) and they are set to full control.

2. Tried UNchecking the 'Encrypt contents to secure data' so as to remove encryption but it returns the same prompt 'you need to have administrator rights to change the encryption type

3. Googled for solutions but in vain. No valid or success answer on google and forums.

Dear all,

I am a novice at trying to backing up my files and data before my hard drive crashes but guess what, I am here to say that my hard drive has crashed and I cannot do that now. I get an error message : <Windows root>\system32\ntoskrnl.exe

which means I have to either reinstall my Windows XP (which I hope works and I still have to find) or reformat my computer.

My question is: how can I save the files on my hard drive manually since my computer technically won't get past this error message?

Please let me know asap.

Sincerely,

coomstop

I want to play safe and have an image to save my sanity if I my computer burns up etc. I have a Seagate external drive. What are the files that make up an image? What do I save? Should this be continuous or just once? If it is just once can take the drive out and not loose the data? How do I get into the new pc?

this is a follow up to my post:

After the above post I learned about diskwizard. Is this a separate software or did I get this when I bought the seagate harddrive?

A:save image to seagate external drive

An image or clone saves Everything on the computer. So, if you have to put a new hard drive into the computer, an image will write to the new hard drive exactly what was on the old hard drive.

A backup takes some of your files and "backs them up" to another location.

This is what Seagate says:
DiscWizard
The software lets you quickly install your new disc drive with wizards that guide you through the processes of creating and formatting partitions on your disc drive, transferring data, and backing up your data.
Please note this is not for imaging/cloning.

I image my four Windows 7 computers once a month. (I have 5 external hard drives and I rotate between them so that if one of the externals dies, I will still have images).

We save very little data on our computers. We are in the habit of storing daily files on USB sticks. If the data is really important, like pictures, I burn to a CD and store on a USB stick or sd card. So doing backups isn't necessary for the way we handle our data.

To image, you would either use a free or paid program.

Here's an article that will explain better than I did.

Not sure what happened. The Visio files were opening just fine a few minutes ago, and now when I try to open them, IE prompts me continuously for "Open, Save, Save as." I tried all three options for the fun of it and IE still prompts every time.
Tried opening them from a remote PC and they open just fine. Can't do anything with them on my PC except view them in Visio itself.
I've tried resetting IE settings. Uninstalling IE 11 and going down to 10. Nothing in event viewer for IE.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

I have a user when he browses to the share he can drill down to all folders and see all documents but when he tries to save a file he gets a message that
the location does not exist. I changed the drive letter to the unc path in the same browser window and now he can save. It can not be permissions since he can save when he browses to the location. It only seems to be a problem if he browses from the mapped
drive instead of the server name. So far this is what I have tried:

I mapped the share to a different drive letterI turned off offline files and deleted the cacheI have logged the user into a different computerI have cleared his profile and created a new oneI can save files to the other share on the same server no problemThe error returns file location not available not access denied, but I can open a file at the same time I have the error, it only happens when I saveThe share permissions are set to everyone full control the permissions of the folder are set by group I added the user in manually and still can't save.
If anyone has any solutions I would greatly appreciate the help.

Hi
I have Outlook 365 on my desktop for emails , calendars and contacts
I use Icloud for Windows to sync my Calendar and Contacts from iphone to desktop or from desktop to iphone.
Was seamless until a few days ago when trying to edit a contact on Outlook it would not allow me to save it
Error message was "Your changes cannot be saved because you don't have permission to modify some or all of the items in this folder. Do you want to save a copy of the item in the default
folder for the item?
I can edit the contact on iphone and it updates though to Outlook on desktop.
Calendar appointments (new and amended/edited) are seamlessly working both ways.
A new contact inputted onto Outlook icloud contact will save but if you then try to add a new number or note then get the above error message.
Please advise

Trying to figure out a global issue with are new  Windows 7 image at work in IE.  We have old PC's that we are replacing and on the PC's we are using an updated Windows 7 image but has the same IE 11 version 11.0.9600.18738CO on both images.
The difference though is that there is no security prompt to open PDF files on the old image.  On the new one we get the prompt to Open, save or save-as and trying to find a way to remove it.  Our guy that built the image did not set the Group
Policy intentionally if there is one for this.  I can't find a way to remove the prompt in GPedit.msc, missing the "Launching applications and unsafe file" is missing but yet i see the option under security settings in IE.  The radio buttons
are grayed out from making changes in that window.

Any thoughts?

Hi,

I've been searching for most parts of the net and the forums here and did install/uninstall/restore my notepad, paint and wordpad but nothing seems to work.

When these files are opened, nothing seems to be a problem. But whenever you attempt to save by Ctrl+S, or the by clicking File>Save or File>Save As the program automatically closes. This has been a consistent behavior for the 3 softwares.

I'm using Windows XP 64 bit OS and had no error messages of any sort except that these programs just close themselves when a save attempt is done.

I did virus and malware scans by Avast, ESET Nod & Kaspersky and nothing was detected.

Reinstalling isn't an option for me now as I don't have any optical drive... besides, this may be very hard for me but I'm willing to suffer for the sake of learning.

I'd really appreciate your inputs on this matter.
Thanks for all ideas and help ahead!

One of my user is having this problem on her Windows XP PC:

Dell GX260 with Windows XP Professional running 512MB RAM, Office XP, Acrobat 5.0

When opening a Word file & edited in Word XP, the user cannot SAVE or use SAVE AS the file, when try to exit out the file, get prompt to either SAVE, CLOSE, or CANCEL the file, at that point it will still not save the file, the only way to exit the file is to hit CLOSE to exit.

I initially thought this might be a Word Xp problem, so I ran the repair tool in Office XP, that did not fix it.

I then uninstalled Office XP, reinstalled Office XP, but that also did not fix the problem.

I then ran the Office update to download the latest patches from MicroSoft, but that also did not fix the problem.

I then UNINSTALLED Acrobat 5.0 from the PC, that FIXED the problem.

WITHOUT Acrobat 5.0 on her PC, the user was now able to open & edit a Word file, and able to SAVE the edited file, also able use SAVE AS to save the file as a new copy.

I then reinstalled Acrobat 5.0 thinking the previous copy of Acrobat 5.0 on the PC might be corrupted, as soon as Acrobat 5.0 was back on the PC, the same problem with the SAVE feature came back in Word XP.

I then installed the patch update for Acrobat 5.0, that did not fix the problem.

At this point, I am out of clues on how to fix it....The user tried Acrobat 6.0 before on the same PC, but decided to reverse back to Acrobat 5.0 because of format problem with 6.0.......so Acrobat 6.0 is no... Read more

With regard to clearing lists of [recently opened and/or saved] file names in Windows file dialog boxes, Orbital Shark had described the following procedure (from his 01 Nov., '10 post-) How to Clear This Dialog Box ? :

"If you want to selectively clear the Common Dialog file names MRU, you need to delete these two registry keys manually:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Explorer \ ComDlg32 \ LastVisitedPidlMRU

HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Explorer \ ComDlg32 \ OpenSavePidlMRU"

My question is as follows (and it is probably a silly one, therefore please bear with me and thank you):

Is the prescribed procedure to delete the *actual keys* ("LastVisitedPidlMRU" & "OpenSavePidlMRU"), or instead to delete the *contents* of those keys? i.e.: Should I select/highlight the key within the left panel of the Regisgtry Editor, and then select delete; or should I select/highlight the key within the left panel, and then select/highlight in the right panel all the contents of that respective key, and then delete all those contents (not the actual key itself) indicated in the right panel?

Thanks much for your patience and for your help! Win

A:Residual File Names in Save/Save As Dialog Boxes

Hello Windough, and welcome to Seven Forums.

Deleting those actual keys would work best. If you like, the tutorial below will help you do this automatically instead of having to manually do it in regedit.Common Dialog Boxes - Clear Dropdown List of Recent Files History
In addition, you might look at this tutorial if you do not want to have this history kept.Common Dialog Boxes - Enable or Disable Dropdown List of Recent Files
