Device Metadata installation information

Q: Device Metadata installation information

I am tring to implement "Device Metadata" for Win7. But after installing the devicemetadata-ms file, there is nothing changed in Devices and Printers folder. I chose to install the file by INF file and it certainly shows in Driver Detail of Device Manager without error, even in Event Viewer. Does anyone know that where I can find more installation or debug information inner Windows? I used
Win7 6936 Build, did it support "Device Metadata" function?

Preferred Solution: Device Metadata installation information

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

I didn't know where else to stick this thread but I think here's a good place.

I just noticed that since I installed 7260 I've lost the device icons for things like my Sandisk Cruzer Micro USB Drives. Win 7229 automatically downloaded the metadata and displayed the icons. This failed on 7260 so I manually added the data but it vanishes from it's location! I've tried it a couple of times and each time it's gone once I click Devices and Printers to see if it's worked. Does anybody else have this problem or am I missing something?

A:Losing Device Icon Metadata

Can someone with 7260 check %LocalAppData%\Microsoft\Device Metadata\dmrccache.

If you don't have a folder called en-US, create one, close explorer then click the start orb-->devices and printers then check the file path again and see if the en-US folder is still there. Everytime I create this folder and and the files needed for the icon metadata it's removed after I check the devices in control panal.

I need to know if it's just my machine or a bug in 7260 due to the fact that it was created from a VHD image.

My family's pc is running 7201 and the icon metadata behaves as it's suppose to.

edit: FIXED! I had accidently left the DEVICEMETADATA-MS File labelled as copy. Once I renamed it and put all the files back it fixed it. I love those high-res icons

I have an issue where seemingly random Windows 7 x64 computers will not display Microsoft Office file properties/metadata.  The issue appears to be independent of the Office suite version.  We recently migrated to Office 2016 from Office 2007 and
Office 2000 prior to that.  Oddly, metadata is displayed for a small number of files, but for the majority of files that do have metadata it is not displayed and cannot be edited through Explorer.
The screen captures below were taken from two PC's.  The 'Title' metadata is highlighted yellow and 'Categories' in red.  The same set of files is displayed in each capture.  As you can see only a small subset of the metadata is displayed
in the second capture.

If you try to modify the metadata from the 'Details' pane on a PC that has the issue you get this:

I have searched for hours trying to find a solution for this.  I'm hoping someone knows what is going-on here.

SIDE NOTE: he told me it was almost full SSD too

First symptoms of problem: For some reason SSD was not detected, bios ask for a boot device and said to restart or use CTRL ALT DEL. We quickly notice that motherboard fail to detect SSD. We unplug HDD and replug SSD and it now recognize the SSD but would fail to load into windows properly.

Current Situation:
Windows is at logo screen something like this!

My next move is to reinstall Windows 8. Tried changing settings on BIOS for AHCI for SSD. I heard SSD gain performance with AHCI enabled. The system just keep loading forever though with this option enable. Why can't it work with AHCI mode enable i am going to attempt to install win 8 in other mode not raid or AHCI forgot name anyways hardware in this machine

I downloaded a zip "screensaver" from Top Downloads (oddly enough, although I chose it from
Google search results, the item wasn't listed when I later went to the site itself using my browser!). I had to use "save" rather than "run" as the latter option was not given. It downloaded fine to My Downloads. When I clicked on it to continue installation, the "screensaver" immediately opened and it was very nice BUT there was no "install" option connected to it. Was this, indeed, a screensaver (that's why I've put that word in quotes above--it certainly was indicated as being one)? It seems to be a routine animation and not a s/s at all. It is definitely not showing among my screensavers in Display. I would appreciate any comments. THANK YOU!!

Windows XP, I believe it's Service Pack 1
E-Machines T3025
AMD athlon xp 3000+

I have searched this forum for similar problems, but found nothing that helped. Additionally, I'm also sorry if this is posted in the wrong place. Before I go on, I don't believe this is a hardware specific problem, as I've had this occur on other machines before.

I formatted my HDD, then reinstalled Windows XP using my factory default E-Machines CD. The installation went fine, but when I'm at the initial setup screen (similar to this) it keeps freezing after I enter the computers name/description, and even if I choose to skip the step. If anyone has a clue, I'd be VERY greatful as I need to get that machine up ASAP.

Thanks much!

Edit: I also have no access to the OS by any GUI methods, the most control I have is a DOS window by hitting Shift + F10.

Hello scissorgal54

The Microsoft version of your exact error -
Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. To fix this problem you should uninstall and then reinstall the hardware device. (Code 19)

If the device is a CD or DVD drive, follow the procedure in Article ID 929461 on the Microsoft Web site (http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=192798).
• Restart the computer in Safe Mode, and then select Last Known Good Configuration. This rolls back to the most recent successful registry configuration.
Try this first and tell us what the result is (or seems to be)

Try this........
To restore the registry
Open Registry Editor.
Click Options, and then click Print to print these instructions. (If you are using the Help and Support Center, click Print above the topic area.) They will not be available after you shut down your computer in step 2.
Click Start, and then click Shut Down.
In the list, click Restart, and then click OK.
When you see the message Please select the operating system to start, press F8.
Use the arrow keys to highlight Last Known Good Configuration, and then press ENTER.
NUM LOCK must be off before the arrow keys on the numeric keypad will function.

Use the arrow keys to highlight an operating system, and then press ENTER.

Incorrectly editing the registry may severely damage your system. Before making changes to the registry, you should back up any valued data on your computer.

To open Registry Editor, click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
Choosing Last Known Good Configuration provides a way to recover from problems such as a newly added driver that may be incorrect for your hardware. It does not solve problems caused by corrupted or missing drivers or files.
When you choose Last Known Good Configuration, Windows restores information in registry key HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet only. Any changes you have made in other registry keys remain.

I deal with confidential and classified information. I am aware that simply deleting a file from your computer is not sufficient to remove it completely and have software to erase data as permanently as possible (Eraser 6.0.8 - using the Gutmann eraser method of 35 passes of random and patterned data). I believe this to be sufficient.

What I want to know is how data on an external storage source is managed by a computer when it is not copied to the hard drive. What information is stored and is therefore recoverable?

For example, if I have a picture file on a CD or external hard disc and open it using MS Image viewer (without copying it onto the local hdd) is an image retained in a temporary file somewhere that might be recoverable?

If I simply open up a folder (again on an external storage source) to view the contents in Win Explorer, is a temporary thumbnail log, or filename list, stored on the local hdd somewhere and therefore recoverable?

Is it a different situation with running videos?

If I do a direct burn of files to CD from an external hdd, are the files cached somewhere and again recoverable?

Is opening up a text file in Word a similar issue - I know the filename is stored in the recently opened list, but what other info is recoverable?

etc, etc, I want to know the risks I am exposing myself to so I can manage them accordingly. How do I manage these files on a computer not part of a secured network or should I not bother? I'm not planning on losing my l... Read more

I've tried to install with a disc, from a usb all that jazz, everytime I go through 'Windows activated setup is copying temporary files...' then 'Window activated setup is starting...' then I get the same error 'Windows could not retrieve information about the discs on the computer.
I've backed up all my data so I'm good to do a clean installation, I've tried booting from the disc(does nothing, boots normally) and booting from the usb(I get to sit around forever staring at a flashing cursor, apparently going nowhere)
I'm running XP Pro service pack 2, I've met all the requirements for 7.
I've unplugged and disable all unnecessary drives and what not(floppy drive, second disc drive, etc)
I've flicked through half a million pages talking about how to resolve this problem on Vista and XP, none of which helped at all, a few advised enabling the 'Virtual Disk' service, brilliant I apparently don't even have that.
Someone please save my computer from a very short flight off the top of a very tall building.
I'm not a computer tech or anything, I'd like to think I'm pretty clued in but for conveniences sake could any advise be extremely detailed in step-by-step form, just to save me from having to make a 'How do you get to that?' post and someone having to reply to it.

A:Window 7 installation failure, 'Windows could not retrieve information about the discs on this computer'

Hi AlecHetho,
Based on my experience, this error usually can occur because the VDS service is set to disabled. To resolve it,  we need to enable the “Virtual Disk” service. Please refer to the following steps:
1)       Click Start / Run and type SERVICES.MSC
2)       Look for the Virtual Disk Service
3)       Right click it and choose "Properties"
4)       Change the Startup Type to Manual, then click the Start button.
5)       Reboot and try the upgrade again.
If there isn’t Virtual Disk Service listed, you can take the following steps to populate the disk information:
1)       Click Start / Run and type devmgmt.msc
2)       Expand the Disk drives and double click the disk.
3)       Click Volumes on  the disk Properties.
4)       If the volumes information are blank, click Populate.
5)       Insert the Windows 7 installation disc and launch Setup.exe
Best Regards

I just bought myself new HW and a new SSD for my computer, and I also installed a fresh Windows 7 on the new SSD. I put my old HDD with Vista on D: and copied a couple of documents over to "my documents" folder to my C: drive + a couple of other files.

I am now cleaning up my D: drive to get rid of all the Vista files which I don't need any more, and I have stumbled over "System volume information" folder. This folder was last modified at the date I installed Windows 7 (5 days ago). Can I just remove this folder without any repercussion?

A:"System volume information" folder on my old Vista installation

It's actually a part of System Restore; the tool that allows you to set points in time to roll back your computer. The System Volume Information folder is where OS stores these points and associated information that makes them accessible.
If you're not using System Restore feature, you can delete it. I recommend you to keep it untouched.

Is it possible to get more information on KB3025097?

I am working on an NFS server implementation and I'd like to know whether there is anything that can be done to avoid the issue from the server side. The KB article does not say what was the issue with the NFS client and how the hotfix changed the behavior.
Any additional details about the KB3025097 issue would save me the trouble of trying to tweak the NFS server behavior to see if the Windows NFS client will accept it.

Any hints on what the issue is related to would be very helpful. E.g., is it something about our FSSTAT reply that Windows NFS client doesn't like?

Ultimately we need a solution for all recent Windows versions (Win 7 or later), but any information that applies to any
Windows version would be helpful and valuable.

2. In the navigation pane, open the following folders: Local Computer Policy, Computer Configuration, Administrative Templates, System, Device Installation.
3. In the details pane, double-click Allow non-administrators to install drivers for these device setup classes.
4. Click Enabled, and then click Show.
5. In the Show Contents dialog box, click Add.
6. In the Add Item dialog box, type the GUID for the device setup class that applies to your device. Ensure that you include the curly brace characters on either side of the value.
7. Click OK to save your changes. You can repeat steps 5 and 6 for other devices.
8. Click OK to save the completed list, and then click OK to save the policy setting.

I have recently bought and installed a permanent copy of W 7 PRO and had no problems up till installing the printers. I tested the release copy of w 7 Ultimate for 3 months w/o having any major issues so I'm quite surprised at this. Anyway I want to install a non-connected printer by picking it from the lists in the "Install Printer Wizard" but every time it tries to load the selected printer it returns a message "Printer driver was not installed. Operation could not be completed (error 0x00000003)." I had previously installed my printers on the RC 7 copy through the wizard and as I said had nothing like this happen and exactly all the same hardware was in play. I have 2 printers on a print server so I have to install the printers first so I can config them in the server menu. If you run the hardware discovery wizard of course it doesn't see anything new and doesn't go any further than the searching stage so I cancel out of it. I'm just a little stunned to see something like this after having a great experience with the release copy!

If your computer is in a domain, I suggest first adding your domain account to the local Administrators group. Or you can use a domain admin account to add the printer driver.

Hi: Did you try the latest W10 driver directly from Intel? If not, this is the one you need...2nd one down on the left for 64 bit. https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/26171/Intel-PROSet-Wireless-Software-and-Drivers-for-Windo... If you still have the issue after installing the driver, the only other suggestion I can offer would be to uninstall the Intel 3160 in the device manager, click the uninstall driver box, restart the PC and reinstall the above driver.

There were some photos and videos on a man's computer that covered an event that later a competitor somehow found out about. Is there a way to determine if those items were accessed on his computer when he was out of the country?
Will metadata give information of when the files were accessed and if so how is that done? He was running XP Home premium on that computer.

Is there some software or maybe another way that I can read metadata? I have a lot of digital family pictures and videos, but can't remember when they were taken. Since the family is no longer around no one can help me to date them. Some I can guesstimate, but most are a total blank to me. My understanding is that metadata can tell me when the pictures were taken.
In case You are wondering I do have a nasty head injury and that is why lot of things in my past are total blur.

I have a somewhat advanced question regarding Adobe Metadata -

A landlord sent me a PDF that in 'Properties', shows me the Application it was made with, including the PDF producer and the PDF version.

I suspect that this particular document was forwarded to the landlord by an unhelpful neighbor. When I check previous documents sent to me by the landlord none of the metadata matches. But I have an email from the person I suspect sent it, and the Application, PDF producer and the PDF version all match.

I understand this could be a coincidence, but before I ask this person if they were the one who forwarded it to the landlord, I wanted to know how much of a coincidence it was.

The application was a Canon CS1011 scanner and the software IJ Scan Utility (which I understand is Canon's software). The version is 1.3 (Acrobat 4.x). Are those three things combined enough to reasonably suspect this other person of forwarding this document to the landlord?

Sorry for the long question and sorry if it doesn't belong here. Any opinion greatly appreciated.

I download music from e-music to which I subscribe. My default player is Windows Media Player 11. My problem is metadata. WMP11 brings some down but a lot is missing. This is especially the case with album art. Personally not having this data takes a lot of enjoyment away from playing my music.
Does anyone know of a program ( commercial or free ) which would be better at finding metadata than Windows Media Player 11.
Thanks in advance.

A:Music Metadata

Try MediaMonkey (freeware). You might want to edit out your email address so you don't get spam.

Alright, this could also go in the Home Theater section but it applies to both so I put it here.

I have a collection of music going on. Currently re-ripping my non scratched and destroyed CD's to apple lossless. I have a bunch of older songs which are mp3 or acc at typical 192-320kb/s. I am trying to organize them better, for I didn't rip them with itunes and they're just scattered through a folder called "Music." My problem is the tags are not being displayed in windows.

I only see eg: Title: Lynyrd Skynyrd - One More from the Road (Deluxe Edition) - Whiskey Rock-A-Ro - - Artist: Blank - - Album: Blank.

Some screen shots to show you;

Sorry if they are giant, I enjoy my dual 22" monitors.

How can I fix this so windows will display metadata in .m4a and id3 tags in some mp3 songs? (Vista SP1 newest updates) This would help me organize music sooooooooooo much easier.
(Some songs display the data some do not. All of which have the data...)

Please and thanks.

just as jpeg files have metadata embedded in them with exif. header do Mpeg files contain metadata and if so how can I access the metadata to view. Can anyone help

A:Mpeg Metadata

Wow, been a long time since I've heard that term used towards photos. So long, I had to go and look it up I found this information on it here, which you might already know.I also found this page here which will allow you to download a program to read/write metadata to pictures. The above may or may not be what you're looking for. I think that the 2nd link will be of more use to you, assuming that the program does what you need it to.If you're using Photoshop, you can do pretty much the same thing from within photoshop by going to File>File info (or Alt+Ctrl+I). This will allow you to input all sorts of (all text) data about the photo or anything else you want. I've used this for years, as it allows users to view info from/about the image right from photoshop itself, so they don't have to open another program to pull metadata from an image.Other freeware apps (photo editing ones) may or may not allow you to do the same (File>file info).Hope this helps. If not, post back and someone else might be able to help you out.
