Q: ThinkPad R400 CPU upgrade options

Hey I have a Thinkpad R400 7443cto with a Intel P8600 in it and I was wondering what upgrade routes I have for this guy. I'd prefer to jump into a quad core if possible. Would something like the Q9100 work?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have an old Thinkpad R400 that currently has a T6570 CPU and I'm thinking of upgrading it.It uses Socket P So I was thinking of upgrading it to a intel Q9100.. Maybe even a QX9300.I know it will fit into the socket, my question tho is will the motherboard bios support any of the CPUs? is there maybe a list somewhere what kind of CPUs are supported? or are maybe all Socket P CPUs supported? Thanks, Janbanan22

Hello,I just joined the Forum.I have a Thinkpad R400 that has recently stopped charging its battery. More details.Model 74401 Gb disk, dual boot Win7 and LinuxMint 18.Recently upgraded RAM from 4Gb to 8Gb. New RAM is recognized. The "results" are the same with or with out Dock attached."AC Power Status" LED remains dark.New battery, former battery not charging either (old battery causes "Battery Status" LED to flash orange).New battery lights up Battery Status LED, and hovering over battery icon will show percentage of charge and not charging.New AC power supply, both new and old, read 20 volts DC at the yellow barrel connector. Will not boot by AC power supply only (battery removed, error message about low battery and powers off)I tried the AC and battery removed and 10 one second pushes on Power Button followed by holding Power Button down for 30 seconds, no change.I removed (under Win7) the Microsoft ACPI and Battery drivers under Device Manager. no change.Battery (new or old) does not charge when laptop is powered off and AC power supply connected. Problem may have begun several weeks ago when I closed the laptop without shutting down and put it in my backpack.A week or so later, its battery was dead when I pulled it out to use it again. Any ideas? Thanks,Fordy2

Hi Everyone!I'm Mariano from Argentina! this is my first post! everything alright? I write this to tell my problem or detail: i recently purchased a used Lenovo R400 Thinkpad that i like very much, i love the look, characteristics, processor, is very good, i put it 4gb of ram, it goes really well, i paid it very cheap. But I have a little problem (the seller told me about it and show me the thing): the display (lcd) shows a little horizontal line that comes and goes (3 seconds in, and 3 seconds  out), is on the bottom on the screen, but the machine is working great, the rest of the screen is working absolutely amazing, no problem at all, it's only that line that comes and goes, is a little detail (sometimes you see it and sometimes you can't even realize that is there), i take the display off but is not the flex i guess, i move it, and is not a question of move it... the question is: anyone knows what exactly is? and how can i take it off?If anyone can help me i would be pleased with that...  Thanks very much guys!

Hello all,For quite a while now, I've been looking to upgrade my SSD in my X1 Yoga.  As you may know, the X1 Yoga was available with either a SATA-based SSD or a PCIe-based SSD (NVMe).  Unfortunately, information about compatibility isn't easy to come by.  In fact, I never found a concrete answer to the question I have been asking all along:  Can an X1 Yoga (i5-6200U model) ordered with a SATA-based SSD be upgraded to an NVMe drive?  I found a lot of 'No' answers online, but with no proof of that actually being the case.  The only cases I found of people upgrading their SSDs were folks with the i7 system boards.  A few people have mentioned that Lenovo's official answer (when they asked) about the matter is that when you order it with a SATA SSD, you cannot upgrade to an NVMe drive.   I didn't want to believe that they'd have a different part number for an i5-6200U board w/ 8 GB RAM for an SATA-based system versus an NVMe system.  The slot physically accepts an M-keyed NVMe drive, despite the SSD in there being a B+M keyed drive.  The BIOS also has a boot option for an NVMe drive.   So, I took the plunge (and risk) and bought an NVMe drive, and am very pleased to report that it works just fine!  There was no drama.  The only thing I had to do was to change the boot option to boot from the NVMe disk instead of the built-in SATA one.   I can't speak for the newer models, but mine (20FQ, i5... I have a Dell XPS R400 with a Pentium II, 400 MHz processor running Windows 2000. (It originally had Windows 98). I currently have one socket filled with 128 MB of SDRAM (PC100, unbuffered, CL=2) . I would like to upgrade and add more memory.

Information from Dell says the computer supports 100 Mhz SDRAM 168 pin DIMM with a maximum size of 128 MB up to a total of 384 MB (3 sockets).

The motherboard is an Intel SE440BX-2. The documentation for it says it supports up to a 256 MB DIMM SDRAM for a total of 768 MB.

Why the discrepancy? Is it based on the OS? And how high can I go?

A:Memory Upgrade - Dell XPS R400 with Intel SE440BX-2 motherboard

The old W98 did not function properly with 256MB or over.
W2000 does not need more than 512MB, but works fine with up to 1GB.

Intel said:

System Memory Combinations
The motherboard has three, dual in-line memory module (DIMM) sockets. Minimum memory size is 16 MB; maximum memory size is 768 MB. The largest DIMM supported at this time is 256 MB using unbuffered 128 Mbit technology parts. The BIOS automatically detects memory type, size, and speed.Click to expand...

I would believe Intel rather than Dell.
Make sure you get PC100/CL2 SDRam, anything else does not work.
You can mix different MB-sizes memory-chips. So buy what you can afford.
Unless you do intensive graphics, even just 1 256MB-stick will do wonders.

Apologies if this is reprising and earlier question on this topic. I have recently acquired an old-ish second-hand ThinkPad X230 [2325SWK build with a G2ET91WW (2.51) BIOS], accompanied by a ThinkPad UltraBase Series 3 docking station [P/N 0B67692] which has an empty 2" bay.I need advice on the following issues:1    The X230 currently has an SSD installed [Samsung 128GB MZ7TD128HAFV-000L1] which will not be large enough for the programs and program data that I have planned to install.  I would like to upgrade to a 1 1TB SSD, and I propose to clone the contents of the existing 128 GB drive to a 1 TB Samsung 850 Evo [MZ-75E1T0B].  Are there any SATA or other firmware issues that I should be aware of before acquiring the 1 TB drive, arranging for its cloning and for the replacement of the current 128 GB drive?2    I would like to populate the empty 2" bay on the UltraBase Series 3 docking station with an HDD, and the model I have in mind is a 2 TB Seagate BarraCuda Hard Drive [ST2000LM015].  Again, I'd like to know if there are any hardware, firmware or other issues before acquisition and installation.I'd be grateful for any help on either of these two issues in an Australian context.

I've been thinking of buying an old Thinkpad T60 and upgrading it the best I can.  The reason I chose the T60 was I believe this was the last model made by IBM I'm not really too sure, the first thing I want to do is find out what my onboard graphics options are for motherboards are. I've heard a few names tossed around like ATI Fire GL and so on but I'm not sure which is the best and which has the most onboard VRAM, now I know these machines aren't meant for gaming but I love to expiriment with older PCs to see what they're capable of.  I've already did something similar to an old Dell Latitude where I upgraded from the abismal 7 MB onboard Intel graphics to 64 MB ATI Radeon.  Basically I wanna know what my options are for motherboards, what comes with them and model numbers so it will be easier to find them. I haven't bought a T60 yet but its good to know my options beforehand.

I'm not a techy and just ordered the Thinkpad X1 Yoga Gen 4 and am confused on the screen option. I don't want the 4K because I want the Thinkshutter and I don't care about the IR.The FHD 1920x1080 w/380 nits or the WQHD w/280 nits?Question:1. Why would the lesser resolution have more brightness?2. Every search I do says the WQHD is better than FHD.....but nothing addresses if it's better if the nits are lower.3. It will be mostly for work, spreadsheets, web, email.....but I also want a beautiful screen since I am paying high dollar for this laptop...and I will use it for personal use also.4. Is there a difference in what I will be able to/see fit on the screen....such as a spreadsheet? Some posts say you won't see as much of the document on the WQHD as you would on the FHD. Other posts say that Windows 10 doesn't work the greatest with WQHD. Also, both displays are 'glossy'....no option for Matte.And....you can't get the 4K without it reverting to the IR camera with no thinkshutter....why?? I would really like the 4K but would rather have the thinkshutter and the longer battery life as long as the display is still above par. I appreciate your advice! Thanks!

The X1 Gen 6 comes with a supplied USB-C charger. Works perfectly. I usually like to have a second charger, so normally I just order another one of the same directly from Lenovo. Considering that charging is done via USB-C, which is a standard, are there third-party chargers that could charge the X1 Gen 6 at a similar rate as the included Lenovo charger? As it happens I have a USB-C to USB-A cable, so I tried to charge the laptop via standard 40W USB charger connected with that cable but the X1 did not even indicate it was receiving a charge, so we probably need to stick with USB-C. One concern if obviously price but more importantly, it would be nice to have a lighter and smaller charger. Are there any offerings which could charge the X1 Gen 6? Thanks in advance!

I've only seen older threads on this so I think a 2018 thread is in order. As soon as the Thinkpad X1 Yoga 3rd gen machines are available, I will want to drive 2 external monitors. One is 1600 x 1200 and the other is 2560 x 1440. In some of the CES announcements I heard about an Nvidia external docking station with "lightning" or something related to USB-C but augmented. I cannot find the information again, and someone who just visited me said that has been available for the 2nd generation version. So is there an "obvious choice" for what to do to connect to ethernet, to printers, etc., and also drive those two screens? Sounds like the new Intel graphics on the Kaby Lake machines will be able to go to a higher resolution externally, but I want to consider the best option given that I have some additional expense budget this year!

First time poster here, so please go easy if I haven't posted entirely correct. I'm a 2nd user owner of a Thinkpad x240 20am model, which was found to be completely unresponsive the morning after an overnight electrical storm while recently on holiday in greece. During the storm, the machine was in sleep mode but charging via the power adapter. I assume the machine might have suffered a power surge via the power adapter, as there were no other connections (ie no network cables or peripherals).Since then the machine has been entirely unresponsive and the power button has been unlit. I have tried to follow the usual advice, ie remove the battery and power via a new power adapter, and/or holding the button down for periods up to 60 seconds etc, but the machine seems completely dead and I strongly suspect I will need to replace the systemboard. The systemboard in place at the moment is a 04x5150 model, but I'm wondering if I could use a x5166 model that I've seen on-line at a more competitive price? Both seem to be for the same CPU. The OS on my machine had been upgraded to Windows 10 rather than the Win 7 Pro originally fitted and the HDD replaced with an SSD too. If relevant I had also added an Intel AC wifi card in the M2 slot. Thanks.

Yes, you can use any X240 motherboard, there is a list of FRu numbers for X240 models here: click me! (Check page 2, title "PLANARS")

@highwayman57 wrote:

I was of the opinion that a motherboard change has an impact on the Win10 key, I'm not sure if you can reuse the key you originally had. But I'm not 100% sure about this, let's see if another forum members knows better.

Good luck with your purchase! And if you have any problem or question do not hesitate to post it here in the forum.

Hello all - as a new P71 owner, I am looking to add an internal optical drive to my laptop (preferably a blu-ray writer). I am having no luck finding out where I can purchase a drive with bezel. Has anyone else dealt with this? Thanks for any guidance! -Tom

Hi,

Have you tried Lenovo?  Choose optical drives on the left side.  I dont think they have BluRay though

Hello, I have spent a long while using my Lenovo ThinkPad W500 laptop with Windows 7 and with Office 2010. Recently, unfortunately, the physical device accumulated enough injuries that I decided to obtain a replacement: same W500 model, however loaded with more up-to-date software: Windows 10, and Office 365. I am trying to become accustomed to the nuances thereof: some are welcome (faster start-up, useful features), whereas other simply are frustrating (e.g., programs much more heavily demand an Internet connexion, and constantly seeks one when this is inactive; many applications have a "desktop" version as well as a "tablet," the latter of which launch by default, despite the former are more robust). Anwyay, the new laptop does not seem to have come with many of the ThinkPad features of the old: I cannot use the fingerprint reader; the multi-touch gestures of the touchpad do not function (e.g., chiral scrolling, two-finger scrolling, middle button to launch Web links); the function keys (F-2 through F-12) do not work; and a few other points. May someone please recommend the best drivers to download, as well as where to find them, for a W500 to operate on Windows 10? Overall, I am wishful to become comfortable with the new operating system, rather than just roll back to Windows 7 (which will cease to be supported by Microsoft, in 2020). Thank you, all, very much.

My laptop was dropped and impacted around the black bezel, cracking the edge with cracks fingering across the display. The actual panel seems to be perfectly fine, but obviously the touch isn't working. The laptop is only a year old, so I'd really rather replace the part than the whole thing if I can. Can just the touch screen/glass be replaced, or will it require replacing the whole assembly? I purchased the unit open box at a great price, so I'm not averse to potentially replacing the whole assembly. Thanks for any replies!

A:Yoga 14 ThinkPad 20FY- Cracked Glass- Options

The glass is actually to touch digitizer and is bonded to the LCD, so it cannot be replaced separately.  That part can be extracted from the lid, so you don't need the whole lid, but you do need the LCD and glass.

It seems Lenovo just rolled out new plans for  Thinkpad customer to choose their warranty add-ons. It moved from old optional plans with different extent of bundled products (e.g. ADP, KYD, Sealed battery) into an a-la-carte item model for the customer to choose. I compare Lenovo online sales website in HK, JP, SG and US and have the following findings: 1. Not all countries have rolled out the new warranty options scheme yet (e.g. Lenovo HK and Lenovo JP is still using old "bundled" warranty plan option) 2. Inconsistencies on the choice of additional warranty services available for Thinkpad customers (For Levono SG, Seal Battery, Keep Your Drive are not available as add-ons if the customer chooses Depot Warranty plan, while Lenovo US offers these add-ons to both Depot and Onsite Warranty. Meanwhile, Lenovo US customer need to buy an add-on for international warranty but Lenovo HK, SG offers the international warranty to all new Thinkpads they sold. 3. Lack of transparency on warranty add-on pricing. I noted Lenovo SG priced Seal Battery Add-on for T480s at SGD330 but same Add ons in Lenovo US is only quoted at USD$26. Can Lenovo explain why such discrepencies happen? And welcome you all share your findings on the Thinkpad warranty add-on offerings in your home country.
