Brand new Microsoft Surface Pro 4 - SFC claims corrupted files ||-(

Q: Brand new Microsoft Surface Pro 4 - SFC claims corrupted files ||-(

One of the steps to fix the "Can't create recovery medium" is to check for system file corruption.
Just out of curiosity I ran an SFC /SCANNOW and it reported "Windows Resource Protection found corrupted files but was unable to fix some of them. ..." If SFC doesn't run through without an error on a brand new system, when then?

This so ridiculous! The only thing that ever ran on that system was a windows update right after doing the initial setup.
But I doubt that there is really anything foul on the system since I have that exact same report on about 4 other systems as well (some old, some new). SFC ALWAYS finds some "corrupted files" that it is unable to fix and so I know by now that this entire mechanism is just a PoS and a waste of time!

MS - get your act together! You constantly introduce mechanisms into Windows that might be originally well-intended but don't work. Why don't you at least removed those once you know they are useless? And even worse: why is this SFC /SCANNOW part of almost every advice one can find in the knowledge base if that mechanism is since years well known to not help or fix anything?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I just bought myself a Microsoft Surface Pro 4. After switching it on and going through the initial setup, one of the first actions I want to do is to create me a recovery drive (on a USB stick).

So I start the Recovery Drive wizard but after a minute or so of "Please wait..." I get:
"We can't create the recovery drive
A problem occurred while creating the recovery drive"

Hallo, Microsoft? WTF is this supposed to mean? Why can't I create me such a safety net on a brand new plain vanilla SP4? I haven't done or installed anything, yet, that could possible interfere with that process. So why is this not working as one would expect?

And why is there not the slightest hint WHY this is not working or what kind of error occurred here and what one could possibly do to fix this?

A:Brand new Microsoft Surface Pro 4 - can't create a Recovery Drive!?!

I hate those generic error messages without any explanation or error code

Meanwhile, did you try another USB drive just in case?

Consumer Reports has pulled its recommendation of Microsoft's Surface line of laptops and 2-in-1s, following a survey of its users suggesting that the machines aren't reliable enough. Specifically, the "predicted reliability" is worse than other brands, the magazine says. - Consumer Reports: Don't Buy Microsoft SurfaceClick to expand...

The Surface Team?s mission is and has always been to make devices that deliver great experiences to our customers and fans. It?s the motivation for everything we do, and we are proud of the Surface devices we have built.

This is why today?s Consumer Reports survey is disappointing. While we respect Consumer Reports, we disagree with their findings. Surface has had quite a journey over the last few years, and we?ve learned a lot. In the Surface team we track quality constantly, using metrics that include failure and return rates ? both our predicted 1-2-year failure and actual return rates for Surface Pro 4 and Surface Book are significantly lower than 25%. Additionally, we track other indicators of quality such as incidents per unit (IPU), which have improved from generation to generation and are now at record lows of well below 1%.

Surface also ranks highly in customer satisfaction. 98% of Surface Pro 4 users and Surface Book users say they are satisfied with their device*, and our Surface Laptop and new Surface Pro continue to get rave reviews.

Thank you so much, I absolutely love how M$ words their stuff. It's almost apple-esque.

I've owned a Surface Pro 3 and after months of bugs I threw it as far as I could in fear of the therapist's bills topping the cost of the device.
Got a SurfaceBook now and it's ok, but it certainly doesn't send me into a state of endless ecstasy as M$ would have you believe.

Hi tonedef -

Welcome to the Tech Support Forum - Vista Support!

What version of Office are you trying to install (e.g, 2003 or 2007)?

Have you changed any file permission settings or "Taken Ownership" of any folders/files?

The "scan disk" that you mentioned running... was it "sfc /scannow"? If not, click on START | type cmd.exe in the Start Search box | right-click on cmd.exe | select Run as Admin

In the screen that comes up type the following:

sfc /scannow (space after sfc) - press ENTER

Let this run. Try Office re-install.

Good Luck. . .

I've got Indesign packaged files with their fonts from a client. As I usualy use Mac I double clucked on helvetica font file to start instalation. Option that came up was 'open with' so I chose Illustrator and Indesign as I was planing to use it there. So now the font files got attached software icons and in the right click I dont have option of instaling it any longer. Just zipping and unzipping, and all of them claiming the file is corupted.
I clened caches, trying instaling font fom different source. Helvetica seems to be ruined on this PC.
is there a way around it? I dont even know what went wrong...
I was able to install other fonts from same packages and was able to install Helvetica on other machines. So neither is corupted.

TEC-SURFACEPRO4-Wed_04_27_2016_145709_76.zip I will update this thread soon. I just don't want it to crash before submitting post.

Brand new Surface PRO 4. I am using the surface dock as well. I opened it during the April 19-20 firmware updates for the Surfaces. Then it started updating and it threw all kinds of errors:

0xc0000021aKMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED (afd.sys)
special pool detected memory corruption

Then, I created a USB surface eraser from https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/down....aspx?id=46703

Restored from the cloud. So basically doing another fresh install. I am done doing that, I have not installing any software whatsoever to identify the real root cause. I just ran the dm_log_collector and it actually did crash once again after the fresh install.

Hello,  I have the following problem: When I placed my brand new yoga 910 on a desk I noticed that it was not lying flat! The down left corner (the rubber "foot") was hanging by 1-2 cm on the air - 5 paper sheets could pass below that.. Of course that created an annoying sound and wobbling when writing on the keyboard. It didn't seem to be an obvious at least problem with the rubber foot not being placed right or smaller than the others. Very strange!  I solved it temporarily by adding some small black stripes of duct type on top of the problematic foot to make it bigger.  You can barely see it, but still this is a bit annoying and worrisome that a new and expensive top line laptop came with this issue (how did it pass the quality control??? ). I was quite disappointed.  I talked to the Lenovo support in Greece  which as always were very helpful. They said they haven't had such a similar issue reported at least with a yoga and said that they could take it to a service point to see how it can be fixed. I can't do this now as I need the laptop for my daily work but I will consider this later. I am also not keen on replacing a whole working perfectly laptop on a DOA case just for this (I bought it 10 days ago).   I was wondering if this has happened to anyone else and if this signals any possible internal faults in the device. For example could this be the result of an overheated aluminum case that caused it (the bottom part... Read more

64-bit Windows safer, claims Microsoft
Computerworld -

Windows users running 64-bit versions of the operating system are less likely to get infected by attack code, Microsoft's security team said yesterday.

But that doesn't mean they won't, countered an outside security researcher.
"64-bit Windows has some of the lowest reported malware infection rates in the first half of 2009," said Joe Faulhaber of the Microsoft Malware Protection Center in a post to the group's blog yesterday. "64-bit malware is still exceedingly rare in the wild."

Faulhaber cited statistics gleaned from Microsoft's Malicious Software Removal Tool (MSRC), a free malware detection and deletion utility the company updates and pushes to users monthly. According to Microsoft's data, the 64-bit version of Windows XP was 48% less likely to be infected than the 32-bit edition during the first half of 2009; PCs running Vista 64-bit, meanwhile, were 35% less likely to be infected than Vista 32-bit.

Windows 7, which was not included in the data for the first half of this year because it had not been released in final form, also is available in both 32- and 64-bit editions. Faulhaber noted that Windows 7 64-bit is the dominant flavor of that new OS as he touted its security. "Most PCs shipping with Windows 7 come with the 64-bit versions of Windows," he observed.

Hello everyone,

I am creating this thread with the intention of compiling any information related to the common Microsoft Surface rt startup error which has plagued many Surface users. Since my Surface effectively broke down two days ago, I have spent many hours searching for a solution to this problem. Most solutions posted in threads suggest pressing a combination of various buttons (for a seemingly random amount of time) on the device or on the keyboard, and seem to only work for a small percentage of Surface users (presumably depending on the Surface model or slight variations in symptoms).

I would like to weed out any 'solutions' which seem to be founded in superstition or 'hocus-pocus', and find out what procedures are actually solving this problem.

Please post:
- Any plausible reasons as to why your Surface may have broken down and resulted in this startup error (including external environmental conditions, Windows updates, physical damage, etc.)
- Any other information pertaining to your specific case (period of time since last successful use, was the device powered on from a sleep state or from a shut down state?, etc.).
- Any attempted and successful approaches towards solving the problem.
- Advice from Microsoft or other credible sources.

Problem: When powering on a Surface rt, startup will not progress beyond featuring the 'Surface' logo. The circle which typically appears underneath the Surface logo (indicating that the OS is loading) does not appear.

Welcome to TSF,

I own a Surface 2 and had suffered with similar issue as yours, tried everything I can and guess what.... I called the Tech Support and I was informed to return. I have transferred all my files into an external hard drive and most of them stayed in the cloud (Onedrive previously Skydrive), the new Surface 2 has resolved my issue. Sorry, if this is not the feedback/solution that you wanted to read, but this worked for me and never had a problem ever since.

The question of poor implementation of monitor mode in Wi-Fi drivers has been discussed on this forum before (for example, see this
thread). Paul E Long promised to bring up this issue with the Microsoft group that dealt with Wi-Fi drivers back in May 2012. I was hoping that things would change, so after I unpacked my new Microsoft Surface Pro, I immediately installed my favorite network
analysis tool, Microsoft NetMon. Surface Pro is an ideal device for Wi-Fi sniffing due to is form factor.

Anyway, NetMon detected the Wi-Fi adapter, which was Marvell Avastar 350N. The driver is, of course, WHQL-certified by Microsoft. So far so good. Now, I enabled monitor mode and began sniffing. Surprise, surprise. Another broken implementation of DOT11_OPERATION_MODE_NETWORK_MONITOR:
the signal level is always reported as "-98 dBm", regardless of the actual signal strength. The rate is always reported as "unknown". Totally unusable.
What kills me is that the tablet was made by Microsoft. One would expect FULL compliance of all the components with the Microsoft specs. But that is not the case.

Should we pronounce Native Wi-Fi API dead? It appears that even Microsoft has no interest in enforcing the standard.

I'm having a problem with my Surface Pro (Win 10). One morning I woke up and turned on my Surface. To my surprise, I get this screen:

Trusted Platform Module (TPM) [Enabled]
Secure Boot Control [Enabled]
Install Default Secure Boot Keys
Delete All Secure Boot Keys
Exit Setup

I didn't download anything, it just happened. I tried resetting it [holding down vol. keys and pressing power], but no luck. Is there anything else I can do???

A:Microsoft Surface Booting Issues

Hello Craig,

It looks like you booted to BIOS/UEFI firmware settings. You should be able to select "Exit Setup" and confirm to boot back to Windows.

I am wondering what is the best power supply to purchase for Microsoft Surface Pro 4 to carry around in case I need to recharge it.

The power supply that came with Microsoft Surface Pro 4 will be staying at home.

Thank you for all suggestions.

A:What is the best power supply for Microsoft Surface Pro 4

You should be able to buy a supply for a Surface Pro 3 (36W supply) that will work with your Surface Pro 4 as long as your Pro 4 doesn't have the GPU.

Hi, I'm in the market to buy a Microsoft Surface and I noticed it says its running on Windows 8.1 RT. I was wondering if this was just a fancy name for the tablet version of Windows 8.1 on desktops/laptops or is it really that different?

I've searched around for info on the net but there seem to be mixed feelings about it, especially with it running Windows 8.1 RT. Can anyone tell me if its worth getting one? For the record, I have another tablet, a Samsung Galaxy Tab, which I use for personal stuff. The reason why I want to get a Microsoft Surface was because I noticed that it has MS Office on it, which I need for work. I don't like lugging around a laptop when I move from place to place, so the Microsoft Surface made sense to me since it would be easy to carry.

Any thoughts or suggestions? It would be much appreciated. Thanks!

A:Need info about Windows 8.1 RT (and Microsoft Surface)

Hello Teitoku, and welcome to Eight Forums.

Basically RT doesn't allow you to install desktop type programs. Instead, you will only be able to install modern Store apps.

If you wanted a full Windows 8.1, then you would want to get a Surface Pro model instead.

Here's a comparison chart of features between them to help.

Hi There,

I currently have a Microsoft Surface Pro 4 connected to one of these docks:
When connected to a dual screen setup the screen flickers bad and it is very annoying to work with.

Once I unplug the dock and plug one monitor straight into the surface itself the screen never flickers.

I have provided a video of the issue below:

I have an old Microsoft surface, pretty sure it's the Pro 2 (bought back when I was in college). Turned it on one day, said it needed to update the software, upon the update finishing it restarted gave me a black screen. Now I can't do anything on it, because when I turn it on all there is is a black screen. Any input on how to uninstall the update, or factory reset so I can at least use the surface again? Thanks.

Over the last month, I?ve spent a lot of time with the team reflecting on the last five years since we launched Surface Pro and it made me realize that while much has changed, many things have stayed the same. In hindsight, it?s clear that Surface Pro created the foundation for who we are today ? our team culture, our dedication to our customers, our obsession with every detail, and our desire to innovate. I?m incredibly grateful for everything these five years have brought, and I?m looking forward to continuing this journey.
When we launched the very first Surface Pro five years ago, there was a snowstorm in New York. We?d planned to have our launch at a Best Buy in Manhattan, but the weather had other ideas. This was the second time weather had driven us out of New York, as during the Surface RT launch the previous fall, a hurricane hit within hours of our event and we had to flee from the city in a rush.

As the storm built, I remember sitting in a conference room trying to figure out what we should do. The streets of New York were virtually empty, and if we decided to keep the Surface Pro launch there it was unlikely that anyone would be able to attend, so we came together across the company and in a matter of hours we had a new plan. The Microsoft Stores Team said we had just opened a store in Las Vegas at the Fashion Show Mall. They had a stage, it was a climate unlikely to be hit with either a snowstorm or a hurricane, and they had customers excited about... Read more

Hi guys!

New to the forum.

I seem to have forgotten my Surface 3 (windows 10) log in password. I am pretty sure its a local login because its linked to my gmail account. The password just isnt working. I can log into gmail fine.

Could anyone please help?? The Microsoft troubleshooting page is like a horrific misinformed nightmare. How are they still getting away with this level of service, I will not understand.

But the fact remains that I am locked out. Any pointer or tips would help. One site said something about a USB boot drive...how the heck do I get one of those??

thank you much in advance !

Unless one of the Moderators here makes an exception in your case, we don't provide help here with a password-protected device because we have no way to verify ownership or the person's actual intent for wanting to access the device.

Neither the "Surface Pen" for Surface 3, Surface Pro 3, Surface Pro 4 and Surface Book nor the old "Pro Pen" for Surface Pro and Surface Pro 2 are compatible with the Yoga 500 as it lacks a suitable digitizer.I recommend getting the ThinkPad Yoga 460 as it supports pens based on the Wacom Active ES technology.

Unwanted encoding messages on opening MSWord files. Inability to open MSExcel files and picture files. Hi there

Who said the laptop was dead --

Ms IMO have got this just right -- not cheap and very definitely a PRO machine - but well worthy as a MacBook competitor. Looks also a lot more rugged that the original tablet type "Vanilla" Surface Slab.

I Want one !!!! Today !!!!!

Ms STOP doing this -- reading about some of your new products could "Seriously damage your Wealth" !!.

A:Microsoft Surface Book - who said Laptop was dead

I just bought one for a coworker. He wanted the Surface Pro 4, but wanted to keep using his computer on the train rides home. My only real complaint about it is the cost. It works upright like a regular laptop, but still has the same tablet capabilities. I used to have a Surface Pro 3 before switching jobs and I really liked that, especially since I used it with a dock. The keyboard flexed a lot, so it is nice to see the Surface Book having a sturdier keyboard. So far so good.

A:Microsoft's new Atom-powered Surface 3 starts at $499

This was sounding so promising then I got to 2GB RAM....

Have a look at your PC now - if you are running next to nothing over standard windows services, then you are probably somewhere around 1.2GB. Add an email client, some virus software a few Chrome Tabs and you will already be swapping away to page file as the OS starts to worry about memory and things will start to grind. How much would 2 more MB cost? Shame as otherwise it sounds quite a capable little machine.
