Preferred Solution: 130W or 90W power adapter for a T590?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I found out that the 130W adapter of my XPS15 9550 does not work in most airplaines. (I frequently have flights > 8 hrs). It seems that there may be power limitations in the 110/220 V buisiness class sockets set at 75 W.
1) is there a way to switch my laptop in a 'don't charge the batteries' mode such that my 130W adapter does not use more than 75 W power?
2) alternatively, what is the minimum power supply capacity that would be sufficient to run my laptop (while not charging).

A:130W adapter not working in airplaines

The battery charging isn't a particularly big power consumer -- the two biggest:
1.  If the system has a GeForce 960m chip, it alone can draw up to 60W of power
2.  If the screen is a 4K (UHD) unit, it will also be a big power consumer.
The CPU by itself draws 35-45W, so you MAY be able to squeak by with a 65W adapter if you disable the nVidia GPU, dim the backlight as much as possible, and enable all the maximum power saving features.
Other than that, there's not much you can do.

Hey, I purchased a new adapter for my Dell XPS L702x , the originele was 150W. But i couldnt find it and a 130W adapter was recommended , also by Dell. So i bought this one and i am getting an warning when using it. When i just continue everything seems to work just fine. However i need to know if i can keep using it, or could this damage my laptop somehow ? This is the warning: "WARNING: A 130w power adapter has been detected, which is less than the recommended 150w adapter originally shipped. The battery may not charge. The system will adjust the performance to match the power available. Please connect a Dell 150w AC adapter or greater for best performance." When you continue to windows this shows up: "130w AC power adapter has been determined. Your system will operate slower and battery will not charge. This problem might be solved by: - ensure the plug is inserted completely for best system operation". Would love to have some feedback.
Thanks
Wil

It is never a good idea to use an adapter with a power rating lower than required.  The adapter will overheat and fail.
The adapter you need is a PA15.

Hi all,
I have an old M14X R2 (Bios revision A09) that has a stock Dell 150 Watt power supply/adapter. For some reason a while back, the computer stopped reading the adapter as 150 watt and now displays it as 130 watt.
I have tried to update the Bios from A09 to A13, but the battery requires at least 10% charge. This is an issue because the battery displays 94% health and 0% charge, but the icon on the tray of Windows 7 displays "Plugged in, not charging."
I've contacted support a couple of times regarding the battery  itself, but I think that the adapter is the issue.
If anyone could help me figure out why the laptop is reading the 150 watt as a 130 watt, that'd be great. Thanks all!

Hello, everyone!
My laptop (Del XPS 17 L701X) started to freeze randomly, so I was thinking that my power supply may be failing (sometimes my laptop also lost power if I the power supply a little bit while connected, sometimes the same supply made a buzzing noise). I have to say, unfortunately this supply was not genuine Dell part, but some "Delta Electronics" supply. Anyway, I googled for Dell genuine power supply and found this one: Dell 130-Watt 3-Prong AC Adapter with 6 ft Power Cord
http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/productdetail.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=bsd&cs=04&sku=331-5817&mfgpid=208399
So that is one that I ordered (bear in mind, I don't have the original one that I bought my laptop with), but when I plugged it in, my Dell issued a warning, that AC power supply with only 130W is connected, the system may operate slower and that  I need 150W or more. Turns out my Laptop originally came with a 150W power supply, but even at the DELL official page it is said, that this 130W supply is the real deal. So I would like to know it this 130W supply will be enough or should I send this one back and exchange for 150W one. Do I have the risk to not to have enough power?
I have found on one page that this particular laptop consumes 123.2W on full throttle, if this helps (I have no means to test this myself, I believe).

Thanks in advance!

Hi,
I am struggling with some problems connected with power adapter. My computer is:
Latitude E6540 (i7-4800MQ, 16 GB RAM, Windows 7 Enterprise 64 bit), 9 cell battery (but the problem occurs even
When I use weaker Dell power adapter (70W, 100W) the computer works much slower. CPU Usage (Task Manager, Performance) jumps from typical 20-30% to 80-100% when browsing internet. It can be compared to working in power saver mode or even worse. One of the weaker power adapters didn't even charge the battery.
When I use the stronger 130W Power Adapater or work on battery everything is working ok. Specifications says ( on bottom, Resources -> Dell Latitude E6540 spec sheet):

Power Options - 65 , 90 or 130 Watt AC Adapter options 90W Auto/Air DC adapter (optional).
Should laptop behave like that or do I have some problem with it?

Yesterday I posted about the C2G docking station that Lenovo sells as compatible with the C940 (that's C2G Part# 28845).  Today I'm back with another USB hub with power delivery that has the same results.  This one is the Configear USB-C Hub from Amazon. Both of these USB-C / thunderbolt hubs will charge the laptop after first being plugged in.  That power delivery stops any time that A/C power is disconnected and then reconnected, or when the laptop reboots, and/or the laptop enters a low power state where it does not require the same power delivery (e.g. hibernation) and then resumes normal operation.  C2G technical support has no explanation for this, nor does Lenovo Premium tech support, nor any other technical support resource.  The only way to restore power delivery is to physically swap the thunderbolt port that's receiving the USB hub, but even that does not consistently resolve the power delivery connection.  It is also worth noting that while the power delivery fails, other connections via the hub work (mouse, keyboard, bluetooth headset, ethernet, etc.). Lenovo support suggested they could have someone come out and swap the motherboard, but I suspect this is some kind of firmware issue.  If you have a C940 and have had success consistently charging from a USB hub it would be great to hear about which hub your'e using.

Hello,
I have a Vostro 3750 i5.
Trying to figure out which adapter to buy for it. I have none at present.
The owners manual lists 3 adapters 65/90/130w as being compatible.
I've read somewhere that Dell laptops have the ability to sense the power rating of the adpater connected and will reduce performace if a low power adapter is connected to allow use of the computer without damaging the adpater. If this is correct which adapter rating will permit the computer to operate at full performance?
Also, does changing the battery from a 6 cell to a 9 cell require a bigger adaper?
I have read the user manual but can't find any guidance on this.
Thanks,

My laptop will no longer turn on.  When the AC adapter is plugged in, the LED light is white indicating power is arriving at the laptop. Cleaned with compressed air. Put everything back.Nothing appears wrong and nothing happened between the last time it turned on and this time that I am aware of. The laptop is out of warranty, and I am pretty handy with computers. Is there anything that can be suggested short of a hardware replacement that would help get this resolved? TIA

The tips I got with this Kensington 33197 power adapter have numbers stenciled on them like N3, N5, N19, etc. The tips sold on their web site make no mention of the "N" numbers and have numbers like K20059, K20050, etc. and there is no cross reference.

You can also see a complete reference for "N" numbers to all the laptops they support at the above link. Again, no mention of the numbers Kensington uses on their site.

I need a cross reference for these kinds of numbers.

Kensington referred me to their telephone tech support; but, there is a language or cultural barrier that prevents their understanding what I need.

Does anyone know of such a reference?

Hi there,

We've got 3 Dell precision towers 5810 that work great, except for a possible bios bug, which I can reproduce on all machines:

I'm using the installed NIC: Intel ethernet server adapter i210-t1.
Our computers go powerless every night (mains power) after a normal pc shutdown. Every morning, when the power is back on, I want to wake up all computers in our building with Wake On Lan (WOL) by sending a 'magic packet' over the network.
This normally works well if the machine has been switched on and off with the power button / windows shutdown. But when I unplug the machine (mains power), wait and plug in the mains power again, the computer does not respond to the WOL packet. (Maybe the PCI-E NIC does not get power on plugging in the mains of machine for the first time).
It works well on the integrated (motherboard) NIC. BIOS / power / sleep state settings seem to be ok.

Hopefully someone here can help solve my issue, because I'm practically at my wit's end with it. I recently ran Lenovo's Updater program and it installed a few new things on my Laptop... I don't remember all of them, but I know one was a BIOS update, a Firmware update (can't remember specifically for what though), as well as a few programs I was missing on my computer (like Lenovo Power Management, just to name one).  It's something I hadn't ran for a good year, so I'm sure everything was using an older version! In any case, it seems after I did that, many of the games on my computer started playing worse.  Long story short, after checking out a few programs to monitor what my computer's doing (CPU-Z, and even Intel's Extreme Tuning Utility), I noticed that my Laptop's suddenly only using a portion of what it can do. For example, the core speed should be able to go up to 2.6ghz - 3.3ghz... but strangely, it's staying at a solid 1.20ghz the whole time. No matter if I run any graphic-intensive games or do anything else that might need some extra power, it stays exactly at that number. Here's the weird thing though.  If I unplug my Laptop and let it run off the battery?  It shoots straight up to the 2.6ghz-3.3ghz, as it's supposed to.  As soon as I plug it in again, it drops right back down to 1.20ghz and many of my games run like crap again. I've tried looking up solutions online, but I've found nothing that helps. This is a common problem (I see lots of posts)
The problem source is the [Dell] AC adapter.  PA-21 Family, 65W, P/N: NX061.  It is made in China.
I have an XPS M1330.  Using Dell after warranty service, replaced the Mother Board twice, replaced the battery twice, replaced the AC adapter twice - not fixing it.
Turns out the power warning message is very informative.  It states "Please connect a Dell 65W AC adapter or greater for best system performance".  So, I plugged in my Dell 95W adapter - WOW Problem Solved.
A lab test of my new Dell 65W AC adapter shows it to be 64.6 watts.  If this unit gets hot (like after several hours of use), it may not put out the full 65 watts - the system may not recognize the adapter, it may power the system ok, but won't charge the battery.
These units burn out after only a few months of use. Their cables are too fragile. If Dell's or their supplier's Quality Control can't produce a reliable 65W product - I found seveal "Made In USA" universal adapters.

A:AC Adapter - Alert - "AC power adapter wattage and type cannot be determined"

Well my solution was simple.
I just removed the battery pack and powered up my notebook. Then I turned off the notebook replaced the battery pack and VOILA. The error message was gone.

My AC adapter is not powering my laptop any longer. At first I thought it was the adapter itself, so I bought a new, OEM, 230W one. Same issue.  Computer charges when off but doesn't charge when working, and won't even turn on (no lights) when battery is out and AC adapter is plugged in. I checked airplane mode in both Control Panel and Lenovo Vantage--it's off. Battery is in good shape.  Can someone walk me through steps to fix this if it's possible?  Thank you.

For the last two weeks, every time I start my Dell INSPIRON E1705 while using the power supply I am greeted with the following message. "The AC power adapter type cannot be determined. Your system will operate slower and the battery will not charge. Please connect a Dell 90W AC adapter or higher for best system operation". I press the F1 Key and everything works fine. I've read about this on other websites and most say it's a design flaw in the power supply after the cord has been properly wound around the supply as designed. Apparently a few of the cords internal wire strands become broken and cause this message. My computer is from June 2006 and shouldn't be having this issue so early...or ever. This seems like a flaw that should have created some type of manufacturers recall since so many people are having this issue. I'm of course out of warranty, will Dell replace this free of charge?

`

A:Power Supply - "The AC power adapter type cannot be determined....."

You are correct, the failure is due toloss of the power supply ID signal. Sometimes this happens because of strain on the plug, which breaks the signal wire. Some even are so severe that the insulation breaks away from the plug; this is due to rough handling. The other cause is one or more of the power socket solder connections to the system board become broken. This also is related to severe handling. I have seen one case where all three power connections and three of four mechanical connections were disconnected. If the power supply is bad, a replacement will cure the problem. If not, then the socket is bad, and this will require a system board replacement. If you are experienced, you can try to resolder the connections. I am experienced and was not able to get my daughter's E6000 to work by resoldered. More recent Dells are using a replacable power connection board which is a much cheaper repair.

This review in regards to the next Generation T series from Lenovo.

The machine I tested is based on a Intel i7-8565U 8th Generation Whiskey Lake 1.8GHz quad-core CPU.  It came with 16 GB of DDR4 memory and a bright 14? QHD(2560 x 1440) with Dolby Vision 500 nit IPS screen.  The screen I got according to HWiNFO64 is Model LEN40AE with a Monitor name of B14QAN02.0. It looks to my naked eye as the same as my X1 Yoga 3 screen with Dolby Vision.  It?s a very nice screen. This screen does not support touch.  The side bezels have shrunk(see pictures below).

As for graphics.  It came with a Intel UHD Graphics 620 and Nvidia GeForce MX250 with 2GB GDDR5 memory.

For connectivity it came with 2 USB 3.1 Gen1 ports, 1 USB Type-C, 1 HDMI 1.4, 1 Thunderbolt 3, a MicroSD Card reader and 1 Audio Jack.  An interesting feature on this laptop that I personally have not seen before is the left side USB C port can charge other USB C devices.  It can output 5V at 1.5A. I personally have not been able to try this. The Thunderbolt 3 USB C port can also output 5V at 1.5A PLUS it can charge another laptop using P to P 2.0 charging function.  I was not able to test this feature either.

For Networking the T490 came with a Intel AC 9560 and mine came with a Fibocom L850-GL and Bluetooth 5.0.  It also included a Full size ethernet port.

Hi, I'm trying to use my t590 under the new Fedora 31 linux and the experience is rather unplesent as for the fan noise goes. If there is nothing going on in the system then eveything is quiet so at least that's fine, but when the load starts to ramp up (browsing using firefox) the fan goes to maximu gear, spins as long as the the load persists and some time after (several seconds) and goes down to the lowest speed. Under Windows the fan is way more quiet and gradually increases its speed as the system load persists. Is there any way to make it behave like that under linux?

I received my brand new 4k T590 a week or so ago, it looks nice, it works ok but I'm finding it really uncomfortable to use.  The front edges of the wrist-rest area are sharp - not burred, nor broken but sharp.  The plastic slab into which the trackpad is embedded and upon which you rest your hands actually "overhangs" the plastic base of the laptop by a mm or so, making a small but distinct lip across the front of the machine.  Sadly, the profile of that lip is straight, not sculpted down as in previous models - this makes it noticably sharp and tends to dig into your wrist and palms when typing, especially the left palm when using the mouse.  The front of my old(er) T580 doesn't suffer from this, its front edge is sculpted down and is silky smooth, as if it was designed with the knowlege that palms and wrists would come into contact with it... Has anyone else experienced this?  I'm wondering if this is an ergonomic failure across the model type or do you think it's just specific to my particular machine?

Hello,  I've been experiencing some issues when using my T590 with the ThinkPad Thunderbot 3 Dock Gen 2 (40AN0135US.) I'll list all I've been experiencing and dock setup.  Dock Setup2x Lenovo P24h-10 connected to HDMI Dock outputs Ethernet3.5mm cable to speakers135W power adapter supplied with dockUSB-C cable connected to T5901. When I connect the USB-C cable to the first USB-C port (first from the left with the power cable icon) one monitor displays at 2560x1440 but the other maxes out at 1920x1080 and has some distortion.  2. When I connect the USB-C cable to the Thunderbolt 3 port (second from the left with Thunderbolt icon) both monitors display at 2560x1440. The problem then is that sometimes my machine doesn't want to charge. Additionally, when using this port i have experienced the 1920x1080 max out and distortion once or twice. I was able to get around this by opening my laptop as a third display which then started displaying the correct resolutions on all displays. Eventualy I was able to close my laptop and the two monitors displayed correctly when using this setup.  Lastly, as I was writing this I connected the dock to the T590 in each scenario I wrote up above to ensure I had everything correct. When I connected into scenario 2, my machine recognized the dock but neither of my two monitors displayed anything. I re-connected back to the first USB-C port and my monitors came back (same resolution settings as scenario 1.) ... Read more

I know this is a similar post to this one but that one is marked as resolved and I'm not so sure it is. https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-T400-T500-and-newer-T/WinPE-driver-pack-for-T590/m-p/4520454#M... I'm having a similar issue. T590 pxe boots just fine, the MDT splash screen comes up but it fails to start loading the boot.ini settings and just sits there for about 20 seconds before rebooting. I am not able to hit F8 and bring up the cmd prompt.  I was getting similar results on the x1 carbon 7th gen until I got the WinPE drivers from here: https://support.lenovo.com/ca/en/solutions/ht074984 However, there are no WinPE drivers listed there for the T590.... I have downloaded the driver pack and added all of them into the winpe boot image just for testing purposes but it doesn't change the behavior. I've also read that this can be fixed by disabling the "Kernel DMA Protection" in the BIOS, however this did not change the behavior for me either. https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/6930c036-e827-4579-bf38-64d6dd7113e7/mdt-wizard-do... Is there a reason that the T590 winpe drivers aren't available for download? It seems like a winpe driver issue to me but perhaps it isn't. Been struggling with this for the past few days so any help is appreciated. FYI - I am not using a docking station. Pxe booting with the ethernet cable directly plugged into the laptop.

Is there a secret to turning on the ThinkPad T590. I just got it yesterday and I thought it was just a simple depress the power button and it comes on. It seems there is no rhyme or reason to just depressing the power button. I just opened it up and it has taken me almost 15 minutes and it finally came on.Yes, it is charged up.

PSREF (https://psref.lenovo.com/Product/ThinkPad/ThinkPad_T590) says that the T590 can be purchased with a "UHD (3840x2160) HDR" display. I can't find that option when I try to buy a T590. How do I buy a T590 with a UHD panel?

Hi,I am wondering whether the Thinkpad T590's UHD 4K display makes use of PWM, accross all or any levels of brightness.I read that the FHD version had no PWM, so I'm hoping the same goes for the UHD.

I think the whole keyboard on my T590 is too dim, as is the screen, even with the maximum brightness setting. I don't understand why it's so DIM. What's the point of backlighting a keyboard if you still can't make out what the keyboard keys are?

I bought a Dynex USB 2.0 4-Port Hub last week and have decided to add an external power supply to power the hub. The short and terse User Manual notes on the final page that a 5Volt / 2.5 Amp Power Adapter may be connected. I called their customer support number and talked to a lady, but her best advice was return to the store and ask there. My experience with this store over the years has been fat chance for this kind of request. Has anyone got a suggestion as to where I can purchase such a USB Power Adapter?

Radio Shack would be a good place to start although you might have to get one of their adjustable models. A Google search should also turn up something. Actually I just replaced my D-Link powered USB1 hub with a USB2 model. The old one is just sitting around and it has a 5V 2.4A adapter. If you want it so you can use the adapter just PM me and I'll send it to you.

my dell inspirion 15 cant charge the battery but the charger is quite ok and is charging other laptop properly, the laptop only powers with the battery power and when the battery is empty it wont power anymore please what is the problem and how do i solve it

A:ac adapter not cant power

Hi JASON55,
What is the exact system model? Are you using an original Dell OEM Adapter? When you plug in the adapter to the system, does the adapter stay firm or does it fall off easily? Is the adapter frayed? Is there any damage on the system? Could you test with another power adapter if possible?
Restart the system and press f2 key to enter BIOS - check the adapter status in BIOS with and without the adapter plugged in. Also, wiggle the adapter cable at the end and see if the status changes in BIOS at any point. Check the battery health in BIOS (if applicable).
Restart the system and press f12 key on startup - choose diagnostics. Let it run the diags and if you encounter any errors - make a note of the complete error and report the same to us. These are onboard diagnostics and they might possible pick some error if the hardware is not functional.
If another adapter works fine, then replace the adapter. If not, first replace the dc port and if it does not resolve the issue, then I would suspect a motherboard failure.

Can I use 45 Watt adapter for dell inspiron 15 5559?? I got the adapter along with the laptop when I bought it. But a warning is displayed on screen prompting me to use 65 Watt adapter... If so why 65 Watt adapter wasn't given with the laptop instead of 45 Watt?

Hi SUSMI,
The system is designed to support both 45W and 65W adapters - see the specifications here - http://dell.to/2fhPLIf
