transfer data from comp to comp

Q: transfer data from comp to comp

I just bought a belkin easy transfer wire thinking it'll let me transfer files from one computer to another... it seems it just transfer whole accounts without asking me what I want to transfer over.

I was looking for a better option than transferring to USB then transferring to other computer. Is there a way to do this?

Preferred Solution: transfer data from comp to comp

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: transfer data from comp to comp

to just transfer 'files and folders'--use a crossover cable (under $10)--see think link with instructions:

Hey all, just had a quick question. Can I download windows xp from one computer and install on my other computer.

A:Transfer xp from one comp to another

If you have an install disk and key code you should be able to install XP from that disk on the new computer after you remove it from the old computer. If the registration fails, you may have to call Windows and explain that you are transferring your operating system from a computer that will no longer be running it to another computer.

I have heard that the main problem with installing XP on a computer that has had Vista on it is there are some hardware parts that don't have XP compatible drivers. If you run into this, you may have to buy the XP "downgrade" OS.

Hi. I need to reformat my hard drive b/c it has a bug that prevents me from logging into windows. I tryed to reinstall XP but it did not correct the problem. However, I do not want to lose the data on my hard drive. Is there a way I can transfer/copy the data from this computer to another computer on a network? Keep in mind that this cannot be done through windows on one computer.

A:Transfer files from one comp to another

C2D: Dont stress yourself out for nothing / you can buy decent used & new IDE drives on ebay dirt cheap / I bought an 80 gig western digital New the other day for $40.00 / you can buy good used drives alot cheaper than that !! then load a new clean install version of win xp onto the new drive and slave your old drive / you can pick whatever you want off that baby then / no torture there !!!!

the only rule to using ebay = buy from a seller with a very high sales record and a very high feedback rating / i.e. 2500 sales and 98.9% feedback rating / those kind of sellers arent into the shaddy stuff !!

this one will go for under $20.00

here is another new one for $25.00

I am assembling a second computer with identical CPU and motherboard:
i7-4770K, ASRock Extreme 4 Z87, CPU-video
RAM of second computer to be determined

Can I use a clone of the Windows 7 Pro build from the first computer, and simply change the key?
I have another, unused copy of W7 Pro.

The first computer has had multiple hard drives & SSDs, RAM sticks, etc.,
but always the same CPU and motherboard.

Will the history of the first computer compromise the second computer (with its new key)?

A:Transfer Windows 7 Pro build to new comp, with new key

If its an unused Product Key you should be fine on the new build. One key per computer . Unless you purchase the Windows 7 Home Premium Family Pack ( for 3 computers ) . Don't think they sell those anymore.
Where did you get the product key ? Keys come with discs ( legit versions )

I just recently transfered my whole computer into a new case, after hooking everything up (including two new led fans), the computer ran for about 5-10 minutes and then froze with no apps running. I rechecked my connections and they were in the right spot but it did it again. I'm thinking that the 350w PSU I have just isn't cutting it, but I can't be sure. If anyone could help I'd really appreciate it.

A:new case transfer/comp freeze up

350 watts is too weak for today's systems, however, this would cause other errors such as random shutdowns, spontaneous reboots, and frequent blue screens of death, not system freezes.

first thing you should do is remove your RAM chips and blow out any dust from the RAM slots using compressed air, then carefully reseat the RAM chips, see if this fixes it.

when you transferred your system, did you clean your components?

I saw the other post with similar question except my daughter's computers have no current connection between them (no router as other person has). Both computers have network cards, one is running Windows ME and her new one has Windows XP (don't know if this makes a difference). I've been told a crossover cable will do the trick (she wants to transfer mainly music), but I've never done this. Please explain how, my computer terminology is limited so not too technical please. Thank you.

6. ATF Cleaner

Will these slow down my system, or make it take longer to shut down and restart my comp? Is there anything on this list that I should not have? If it's not a big deal, does anyone recommend any more apps I should download or things to do to make my system better?

If I install almost all of the reputable spyware removers and system optimizers, etc. on my comp, will it slow down my system? Will there be any negative consequences?

Right now I would opt for a faster computer over a secure one, so I would prefer speed over an increased possibility of a virus, etc (still want an anti-virus though). I'd like my comp to shut down and restart quickly, but of course it's not that big of a deal.

With that in mind...I was wondering what the computer "gurus" think is the best way I can optimize my computer? Well dude.. i would just go with ad aware.. it wont really slow the comp down

somthing activly scanning such as norton avast etc.. will slow your comp down by taking resources... just go with a scanner like adaware that doesnt use resources..

EDIT: Norton sucks... seriously

A:Newbie questions. Will anti-spyware, etc. slow down comp? Best way to optimize comp?

As a rule, you use:
1 firewall
1 antivirus
* Norton is not the best program around, and it's a resource hog, but since you bought it, you'll have to live with it until it expires.
* Using more then one of each is asking for problems (conflict).
As for antispyware programs, you can have as many, as you want, however, I wouldn't use more then 2 as startups, since you want fast computer.
Your computer specs look very good, but the lower number of startups, the better (this is another thing to check).
As for antispyware, I'd keep Spyware Blaster as a startup program, and I'd add a-squared: http://www.emsisoft.com/en/software/free/
You may want to run others, you have once in a while, or when any problem arises.

In addition, you want to keep your computer clean of garbage, and for that purpose, you want to get CCleaner: www.ccleaner.com

Once a month, you want to run defrag. I recommend free jkDefrag: http://www.kessels.com/JkDefrag/ instead of Windows defrag.

That's about it. If you have more questions, please, ask.

I want to be able to print from my XP Computer to the Vista computer in the other room, wirelessly.

XP Home
Vista Home Premium
New, Shared Printer

Printer on the Vista computer is "shared"...I don't know anything about networks
I use control panel: "add a printer" -> "A network printer" -> "Browse for printers" -> it shows some sort of window with icons that don't really mean much to me:

One category is called "Workgroup" and when I click it, the Vista name of the computer in the other room shows up, but nothing happens when I double click that. I connected to a wireless printer a long time ago this way when one was connected to an XP computer, and the actual name of the printer would show up.

Does anyone know how to do it?

I've got an annoying problem I'm trying to smooth out. On my 3-computer LAN, I've got network shares set up on all three comps. (Not homegroup; not public folders; those aren't workable for my situation.)

On my main work computer ("Comp A") (Win 7 Home Premium), whenever I open the sharelist on either "B" or "C", I have the extreme pleasure of waiting 8-10 seconds before the shares on the requested machine are presented.

Other than that, the shares work perfectly, except for the annoying delay every time I want to use Comp A to open the list of shares on Comp B or Comp C.

What I'm sharing: My user directory on each comp. (I'm the only user on this 3-node LAN.) Sharing with Homegroup or Public Folders isn't feasible.

When the delay happens: Courtesy of Wireshark, I've learned that when the delay occurs, it occurs after "Negotiate Protocol Response" and before "Session Setup Request".

I'm also getting the same delay behavior on one other computer (Comp C), but only when accessing the share list Comp A. Here's the specific run-down...

Computer A
Windows 7 Home Premium
8-second delay opening shares on Comp B and Comp C.
Computer B
Windows 7 Ultimate
No delay opening shares on Comp A or Comp C
Computer C
Windows 7 Ultimate
8-second delay opening shares on Comp A (Home Prem.) but *not* Comp B (Ult.)
I'd really appreciate any troubleshooting suggestions. End result: When I click a computer to ... Read more

I recently set up a workgroup called "workgroup" so that my two PC's could share files.

The XP comp is called Qing, and can access the workgroup and log onto the linux server called Han (running Fedora 6 with Samba) . Once logged onto Han from Qing, I can see the shared folder, but when i try to access it I get the following message:

"\\Han\share is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. The network path was not found."

On Han, the linux comp, I have set up a shared folder called "share" with full permissions.
I have enabled NetBIOS over TCP/IP and rebooted and still no luck,
I have searched the internet and these forums for a similar problem but was unable to find anything that I could use.

I am transferring some large files from my computer to the laptop but the transfer speed is very slow.
Im sure that when I do it on my sisters laptop its like 9-10mBps, almost max bandwidth all the time but with my laptop its very slow. About 1/5 of the maximum bandwidth i believe.
They are all running windows xp with SP2.

Is there anyway which can make transferring of files use most or all of the available bandwidth on the 100Mbps ethernet network?

A:LAN ethernet 100Mbps transfer speed only 2Mbps from comp to laptop

Are you talking about a connection through a router?

An ethernet connection is through a router, but you might be talking about a crossover cable, which looks the same as an ethernet cable, and has the same connection type (RJ-45), but is a connection between two computers.

I had tp transfer my master Sata HD to my new computer as a slave, but as a lot of my files were saved under my user account folder (c:/documents and settings/[account name]), I can no longer access the folder. The HD works fine, but whenever I try to enter that folder, a pop-up appears saving "access denied...". I understand that this problem is due to the fact that I now have a new username etc on the new pc, as I am using a different master HD now. I have tried to rename my user account on this new pc to the same that was on the old computer, in the hope to be able to enter the folder. I still know my password etc for the old HD account if that makes any difference.

I use winXP SP2 and use SATA HD's...

Well this is my first post. I am a fledgling hobbyist at this computer thing and I got this lil comp from my friend for free. It was working great and I was really enjoying checking emails and listening to music on it while browsing the webernet. Two days ago I encountered a virus on the comp while installing some pirated (eeek) software. Needless to say I got my due! The comp rebooted... or I rebooted -I am still hazy on it- and I could not find my taskbar and it looked like half of my desktop icons had been moved down the screen. I tried to move them but nothing worked and I also tried to recover the taskbar using ctrl-esc. I just got my new laptop and I am trying to transfer files from old computer to it. I tried to set up a home network by following the wizard. When I go to My Network Places from my new computer, nothing shows. I tried pressing the View Workgroup computers button from there and all I got was:

"Home not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions."

What should I do?

A:Network Problem. New comp can't access old comp.

Create a file in notepad named FIXANON.REG with the following contents:

------------------- Use text after this line -------------------
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
------------------- Use text before this line -----------------

Double click on the file and say Yes to the merge into registry question.

If that doesn't do it, let's follow these basic debug steps.

Turn off any firewalls for debugging. If the firewall is the problem, you'll have to configure it to allow access to "trusted zone" addresses. Note that some firewalls must be completely uninstalled to stop them from affecting your networking.

I have a 32bit comp, W7 Ult, 1TB HD and I would like to clone that onto a comp that is a 64bit. HD is the same capacity, question is, can this process be done? Will the programs from the 32bit work in the 64bit comp.? I'm thinking of using Acronis True Image Home 2011.I was given a newer desktop minus the HD and was going to retire my old desktop and I wanted what was on the old comp(32bit) transfered to the new (64bit) tower. Thanx in advance for any advice.

A:Transferring Everything From 32bit comp To 64bit comp

You can't do it.
64-bit has to be a clean installation.
You can transfer your data, but all programs have to be reinstalled.

My dad has expensive construction software that he needs on a day to day basis, but his laptop is dying and very slow. Currently his laptop runs Vista x86, and I wanted to give him my laptop that runs 7 x64. Could I swap the hard drives so that its an easy transition, or would that not work? Thanks for any input and suggestions.

A:Hard drive from one comp work in another comp like it did before?

"his laptop is dying and very slow"

that might mean his hard drive is bad, or that he has too many programs/malware installed, in which case you would not want to put his drive in your laptop.

But to answer your question, it depends on how different the chipset drivers are between the two machines. But if you have the win7 x64 install dvd, you should be able to do a repair install if windows is not able to boot after switching hard drives.

Hello mikey086,

Please copy this page to Notepad since you will not have any browsers open while you are carrying out these instructions. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.

You don't appear to have an Anti-Virus installed. I do see the set up file for McAfee in your temp folder, but it doesn't appear to be installed. If you are in need of an Anti-Virus, please download and install the following free program:

Please download AVG Freeat Grisoft. Scroll down the page a bit for install link. Install it and make sure to check for updates.

Download CleanUp! (Alternate Link if main link doesn't work) and install it. Do not run it yet.

Download LSPFix.exe. We may need it later.

Download CWShredder and run it. Click on 'I Agree' button if you agree and check for updates. Click on 'Fix' (it will automatically fix anything it finds for you) and then click OK. If it asks if you want to delete a certain random file, choose No and post that filename here. Let it finish the scan and then hit Next and Exit.

Go to My Computer->Tools->Folder Options->View tab:
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading:
* select Show hidden files and folders.
* Uncheck Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.

Hey there,

Basically, I get that message "AMD Data Change...Update New Data to DMI!" then it just hangs there no matter how long I leave it.

I've been reading this post as it's the only thing I could find on the net about my problem.

Unfortunately some smartypants decided to close the thread (or set automatic thread closing) so no reply notifications can go directly to the people originally dealing with the problem, leaving us with no choice but to have a duplicate thread and a restart on the expertise involved in solving it :wtf:

So here it goes.
I appreciate any time you put in to helping me here. Also, it is quite urgent as I'm the lead modeller on Cypherium and am falling behind schedule.. so if you want to play it sooner you'l help me get this working faster

About 10 hours later it was still working perfectly, I turned off the computer and went to sleep.

In an effort to reformat my 500GB Western Digital My Book External (which was full) from NTFS to FAT32 so that I can use it on my philips DVP 5982 DVD Divx player. I moved all my files to three HDD I have used in the recent past, two 80GB and another 120GB Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9. I did so by cold swapping them and plugging them into the slave IDE (yes I took care in jumper placement, held power button after unplugging power to drain residual, and touched the metal frame before handling/swapping.) After I reformatted 500GB My Book I began to move files back to the 500GB when I got to the 120GB Maxtor (the one I put all the files I really wanted to keep) it shows up fine as D: drive no prob... However when I go to open or explore it Error: This drive is not formatted would you like to format this drive Yes or No. I of course have selected no every time. I want my data.

My two main 2 Maxtor DiamondMax work fine.
I have ordered an IDE to USB 2.0 cable and power supply in last ditch effort.

Does anyone have any recommendations as to how to get it to read my drive or get my data off of it?

Alright, I'm clueless to Networking pretty much.

I have recently set up a linksys wrt54g router to my desktop with a wireless signal to my laptop.

My question is, is there a way/how do I share files between the two computers. What do I do to set this up (if it's possible), and what other equipment might I need.

I'm pretty much networking illertiate so go easy on me.

A:How do I share files from comp. to comp.?

If using XP . . run the "Set up a home or small office network" wizard from "My Network Places on each machine . . tell it you want to share files . . then set the folders you want to share to share on the network ( right click . . select Properties . . Sharing tab )

Hello there, I recently upgraded my comp by replacing mobo, graphics, ram, cpu
pretty much the lot except for my hdd and cd drive.
the problem is now it wont boot and keeps restarting, it gets to the windows logo and then goes to a blue screen for half a sec then restarts. i have windows 7 and even the repair tool doesnt help with the problem.
ether my hdd has had it (i have had it for a while now) or there is a issue with my new ram?
could this be a compatability issue or a fault?

i have tried the windows 7 repair tool but comes up saying cant fix problems. tried restarting from a earlier time, and iv also tried to boot from the windows 7 disk but it just freezes so i can boot or install.

can anyone help me try and get this new beast of a comp up and running ???

A:Upgraded comp but now comp keeps restarting

First you need to turn off automatic restart. Go to Control Panel, System, Advanced System settings, Start Up and Recovery, settings and un-check automatically restart

Hello, thanks in advance for the help.

About ten months ago I purchased a new 150gb hard drive (E drive). Having a lot of stuff on my old maxtor 12gb hard drive, I had a friend install the new E drive while attempting to keep the old maxtor working. When this failed, I purchased a new 75gb drive to be my "C" drive, copied over the stuff from my maxtor 12gb, and planned never to use it again for storage beyond what is already on it, and use my new E drive for all my other needs.

A couple days ago I went to install an old game (starcraft to be exact) and discovered I had an instance of the game still somewhere on my computer. While searching for this, I re-discovered my maxtor backup folder, which included everything I had backed up 10 months ago, including what appears to be the full version of Windows XP...meaning I (think) I have a copy of Windows XP on both my C drive and my E drive.

Uninstall programs as well as add/remove hardware was not working for me, so I deleted the starcraft folder from the "maxtorbackup" folder on my E drive. I was then able to install the game and play, however upon my next system restart I've noticed everything runs a lot slower. Everything from opening new programs to switching worksheets in excel.

If I haven't completely confused you yet, I was wondering if the changes I made to the "maxtorbackup" folder could be causing this slowdown. My secondary question is if the maxtorbackup folder needs to even ... Read more

I want to send out a big THANK YOU to Rollin Rog for all the posts he makes on here. I always see posters post their problems, but not as many that share their solutions, so here is mine.

I have been stuck with a computer that unexplainably slowed down and turned into a pile of molassas last week. After a wonderfully useless chat session with Gateway, I tried all the troubleshooting tips that I could find (disk error checking, virus scan, disk defragmenter, hard drive utility scan, memory scan, ad scan, ms config startup changes, deleting temp files, etc. etc. etc.).

And THEN I found Rollin Rog's checklist.

For some reason, the current transfer mode setting changed to PIO. I uninstalled the driver and rebooted the system, and now WALLA!, everything is good. (I would be interested to see if anyone has an explaination as to why that happened?)

Thanks Rollin Rog for the time you put into this forum. This will be the first place I check in the future if I have any additional computer problems.

Recently had a virus on my computer. Had to take it to the geek squad to get it fixed. Brought it home the other day and it would not connect to my wireless network (I am on the other laptop in my house that does still connect). It would connect before I got it "fixed". I brought it back to the store the next day and they tried a few things. I will connect to their wireless in the store.

I originally had Geek Squad come out earlier this year to set up my wireless router and the guy who helped me at the store said it might be because of a certain way he set my computer up to connect to the router which got erased when my computer had to be restored.

Now they want to charge me an extra $89 for them to come back out to the house and fix it.

Is there anything I can do to try to fix this myself without forking over even more money?

I just got a new computer with Windows 7.

My old computer has Windows XP on it.

I need to get all my old saved Incredimail mail from my old computer to my new one.

I just dont know how.

Here is what I have done so far...

Installed Incredimail on my new computer with Win 7.

I then looked online to find out where the back up files for Incredimail emails are and found them on my Win XP comp. I then downloaded that file to a flash drive thinking I could find the same file on my computer with Win 7.

The pathways are supposed to be:

C:\Documents and Settings\User Name\Application Data\IM\Identities\
C:\Documents and Settings\User Name\Local Settings\Application Data\IM\Identities\

I was able to find the second one on my XP Computer. But when I went to transfer the file to my Win 7 Computer, I could not find the appropriate folder. There IS no Documenst and Settings. Nor is there a an IM or Identities folder.

What do I do?

I REALLY need to have these old messages. There is some very important info I need to have.

A:Incredimail From XP Comp to Win 7 Comp, help?

They have a tool in the program to do this: IncrediMail Help Center: How do I transfer all of my IncrediMail files and settings to another computer?

In Win 7, the folder is Users, not Documents and Settings. From there, it's probably Roaming, but I'm not positive. I don't and won't use Incredimail.

It's sort of a weird problem, really. I have a mac with OS X connected to a vista PC through an ethernet cable. I'm able to access and copy folders with the pc, but when I do, only a small amount of the files are transferred. I'll tell it to copy a folder with several gigabytes, and it will successfully transfer like 100 mb. I need to transfer about 110 gb. I split it into a bunch of different folders, trying to do each one separately, but to no avail. No error message, or any other indication that there is a problem. It's as if vista simply ignores the majority of the files I'm trying to transfer. Any hints as to what might be happening? Thanks in advance <3

I was looking around on the Worldofwarcraft forums and i clicked a link because it proposed something interesting. While nothing seemed unusal, people in the thread stated in was a keylogging attempt. After further analysis i couldn't deny it either. Try my best, I did scans after scans with Avast antivirus and Windows defender, each came up clean. I also dled and have a hijackthis log in which i hope you can tell me i am clean of invaders. Yesterday i didn't even know keylogs exsist and now i am all to aware of their dangers, I am of course going to take alot more precautionary steps to avoid suck attacks (im never clicking any links at all anymore).

I would also like help on how to get rid of this invader (if it is on my comp). I want to play WoW but i have avoided anything that could compromise my password, getting on these forums, i hope my email password isn't compromise.
