Q: Ummm Network problem maybe? SP2 problem?? Not sure. Need your advice!

Hey yall, first post here. I am having a small problem. I recently update to the Vista SP2. It seems like after this installation I am having problems with my network. I can not get my Itunes connected to the store, I can't get my Mcafee to update, and I could not get a program for my Blackberry to update. I have tried and tried all kinds of stuff and I am really not sure what to do. As I was running some tests on my command prompt I got the System Error 53 message. Maybe yall can point me in the right way rather then me just googling everything and getting tons of different ways. I thought I would include this if this will help. Thanks to all in advance!!

Preferred Solution: Ummm Network problem maybe? SP2 problem?? Not sure. Need your advice!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi all. I'm on a NT 4.0 network (servers, workstations). we have a server that serves as our print server and we use jetdirect for 90% of the printers. HP laserjet 4's always seem to have some problem, but this one in particular has us stumped.

we have an lj4 hooked up to the network and installed on the print server. there is only one user that uses it as it is conveniently located next to her desk but isn't near enough to anyone else to make them feel like they should print to it.

anyway, she'll be printing to it just fine and then it will stop printing the jobs that she sends to it. rebooting her computer fixes the problem for a little bit but then it happens again. any ideas?

A:{Advice Offered} - Network printer problem....

Is the problem on her workstation, that it is not sending the prints out onto the network to the print queue on the server... or is the problem in the print queue on the server, that it is not sending the print jobs to the printer?

And easy way to check, is when she is having a problem printing, print a test page. If you can see the test page in the queue, the problem is on the server, if it never gets there, the problem is on her workstation.

BTW, is the printer close enough for a parallel cable? If so, and she is the ONLY one printing there, just make the printer local. It will save you one IP address on your network, and maybe even one headache. You can still share the printer on her workstation, and use her NT box as the print server for the printer. The only restricition is that it will only accept 10 different people printing to the workstation at any one time.

I just installed a laptop with Win98SE and I want to connect it to a few printers on the print server. Although the drivers for Win98 are installed on the printers/print server for the printers that I want to create I get the following error message -

Access to the specified device, path, or file is denied -

I checked MS's support knowledgebase and the exact problem is at this link -

None of the information on this page or the pages that are linked to it seem to help me. Does anyone have any ideas for getting around this without eliminating shares on the server?

The server is NT 4.0. The laptop is Win98SE.

This is probably obvious, but have you given the new laptop shared access to the printer server?

I'm running a fairly small network with a Win 2000 server using TCP/IP. There's one Win95, some Win98, and some NT 4.0 workstations on this network along with a few 2000 Professional workstations, and three other machines running 2000 Server (but being used as desktop machines -- they're for the developers who want to run IIS).

Prior to upgrading to Win2000, everyone could freely browse each other's workstations from any other terminal, so long as sharing was on. Now, with 2000, the default is for no one to be able to browse the workstation. I'm unable to pinpoint what needs to be changed to allow this browsing. Our server is fine, and one other system running 2000 Server can now be browsed after I messed with it on and off for about a week. The problem is, I changed too many things at once, so I don't know what worked. I've since tried to do the same changes step-by-step with another workstation, but I'm having no luck.

All workstations are set up the same, with the same group memberships and rights, and all are fully pingable (we're running DNS, and pinging by machine name works fine, also). All non-2000 workstations are still completely browsable, of course. This only affects the 2000 systems. They appear to need some type of right given to allow "My Network Places" or "Network Neighborhood" inter-office browsing to take place.

If I go into another workstation and try to get properties on one of these work... Read more

Hi everyone

I need to see if anyone has a solution to my problem. I have a Dell Inspiron 1525 and my granddaughter has a Dell Inspiron i15-157B. I added her laptop to our wireless network (Linksys wireless-G broadband router model WRT54GS). Everything works fine as long as she's here in our home, but when she goes home and we try to connect our webcams through Yahoo Messenger, I can see and hear her just fine. She can see me but can't hear me. Why would it work here and not there? I'm wondering if it's something with our home network.

Her laptop at home is connected directly to the internet, but they will be setting up a wireless router also. We both use Vista.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Are you getting any 'link light' on the card you plug the cable into? Usually a little green light or Amber I think it is on Dell. If you are not I suggest trying a different cable from your modem to your PC.

Also, is your PC directly connected to the modem or into a router?

And when setting your IP address are you going to Start --> Control Panel --> Network Connections?

Hello Everyone,
I am new to this forum. I am hoping someone maybe able to help me diagnose and fix the problem with this problem. I have a problem with Acer Aspire One Network Adapter. The problem is that the netbook will connect to the internet and will have full bars for internet connectivity. Then a few minutes later it will just disconnect on it's own! I can usually reconnect by going on the Network & Sharing Center, then going into Diagnose problems, then clicking on Network Adapter, then after it resets, it will usually reconnect to the Internet, but lately it won't reconnect! I then have to restart the netbook. The netbook is running Windows 7 Starter, and it has Atheros AR5BXB63 Network Adapter. My friend who is a computer person searched online to confirm if the drivers were up to date, said that was not the problem. I would like any advise anyone can give me to see if this netbook can be fixed before I have to buy another! Please advise?

Hi again...

Well, today I formatted my drive and reinstalled windows. Installed every driver and program I needed and was so happy that everything ran smoothly.

After some hours while the PC was turned off, I tried to enjoy my new XP installation.

Two short beeps (the second somewhat distorted though) and no POST. I recently installed new memory and ran on it for a few days with no problems. Just to be sure I tried just one dimm at a time, changed slots, installed my old, mem-tested memory following the same RAM troubleshooting procedure with no results. Only when I got one of my old dimms at the last (4th slot) I had something different (several continous beeps). Removed secondary PCI cards and my SATA DVD-RW but no POST!

As a last resort I cleared CMOS and voila my PC posted and got into XP. Reinstalled all the stuff and my new memory (Mushkin 2GB Dual DDR2 kit) and the PC is running since then.

But I'm affraid that something is not ok...Can you direct me to some more troubleshooting procedures or share similar experiences? Could it be mobo overheating (The CPU was running at no more than 45C but the mobo got high for my experience like 40-42C)?

With some websites I visit and need to see a large .jpeg file listed, seeing the expanded image it will not show everything. i.e it tends to be cut off at the bottom. I know by preview/thumbnail what it should be, but have just got this problem now, having only recently updated my IE version.
Importantly though, it's not on every image only some. I'm quite confused as the problematic images were fully viewable before I updated my version. Could this be a problem with IE or something else? It's very odd as I don't have any connection problems. Thanks in advance.

So, I made the choice of checking my temps on this computer, since the case was very hot in the back and I suspected something was wrong.

First of all, my "old but still good" build:

CPU: Intel Pentium D 945 @ 3.40 Ghz
---- Cooling device: Artic Cooler Freezer 11 Rev. 2
GPU: XFX Geforce 6800GS 256MB AGP8X
---- Cooling device: Zalman VF800-Cu
HDD: Seagate Barracuda 7200.7 120GB IDE + Hitachi Travelstar 80GB USB

Fans: Processor (intake via CAG 1.1), Rear Outtake + PSU Outtake + Front Intake + Some holes in the case (already there)

The temps are as follows: (colors indicate state of attention)

Ambience: 42C <--> 51C (inside the case)
CPU: 52C <--> 65C
GPU: 62C <--> 96C
GPU Ambience: 50C <--> 62C
HDD0: 36C <--> 44C (directly above the intake fan)
HDD1: 29C <--> 32C (USB case away from this nonsense)

(Room temperature is around 23-26C because of summer)

So the temps that worry me are the colored ones, especially that bold italic underlined red one which is really stressful.

Well, I know the GPU is hot, what I wonder is
1) how to make it go cooler

and about all the temps:
2) is the room temperature a factor to this?
3) is the CPU hot for what it should? I hear P4's are very hot, and since this is a Dual Core P4
4) the HDD1 used to be inside the case (temps 40C <--> 51C), but kept clickin... Read more

A:Overall temps problem, need advice

Blow the dust that has collected over the years out of the various heat sinks & fans. Yes, room temp is always a factor with a heat sink & fan. The old Prescotts ran hot, but I don't think 65 is too hot, but it's getting close, The maximum temp for a P4 is 70 I think. The heat could cause your computer to throttle down and reduce its performance.

Hello Yvesj,

Since it's a Microsoft program, they will of course have it be able to be updated through Windows Update as well as manually through the program. It doesn't really matter which option you use to update the program since it will only update from either or and not both for that specific update.

You could also set Windows Updates to not show updates for "other Microsoft programs" by unchecking that option under "Microsoft Update to not have them there.

If you have MSE set to run on a schedule, then you may also have it set to check and install updates then as well.

On Oct 11 2017 I started a thread here;
I have recently uninstalled Google Chrome as advised and because I was told that Google Chrome was 'almost certainly' the cause of the problem, i.e. my PC doing everything painfully slowly as well as freezing frequently. I don't have enough RAM apparently.
So, after uninstalling Chrome I went back to Internet Explorer only to discover that my PC is STILL as slow as a week in the jail.
My screen also 'freezes' for several seconds before kicking in, almost every time.
So, if Google Chrome is NOT causing of the problem, what is ?
Could it be my Comodo Internet Security ? Could it be the fact that I'm still using Windows XP ?
I recently went to YouTube via I.E. only to be told that YouTube is not available through I.E.
If I'd known that I wouldn't have uninstalled Chrome in the first place.
Can't someone out there help with a answer to this ?

Hello All,
Noob here, and this is my first post and I don't understand "computer speak"
so please keep your answers in "layman's terms" or I'm totally lost :)
I'm using Windows XP , my C-drive says I have 18.6 GB capacity
I've used up 17.0 GB of that so I only have 1.60 GB left to play with.

I've done all the disc cleanup's & did the De frag thing & got rid of unneeded
items but I still only have 1.60 GB left.

I store everything on my desktop and need to keep it that way, Am I now
at the point where I need to buy a newer more powerful computer that has
a ton more GB capacity to start with ? or is there some other steps I can take
to gain more storage ?

FWIW, I already have a ( W.D. My Book w/465 Gb capacity ) drive F
external hard drive that I am using to store things on.

Is there a way to configure/rewire my hard drive so it uses the drive F
all of the time for all of it's memory/storage needs Or is the drive F only
designed to be used as a external storage only that you have to go into
to retrieve a single thing at a time ?

So, if I need a new computer, what size would you recommend ?

Thanks for any input..

A:Need advice w/C-Drive problem

You can install programs on an external hard disk as well as just using it for backups and storage. It will probably take a little bit longer for those apps to start up compared to being on the C drive.

You can fit a second drive inside your desktop too, and install applications on that.

You should also consider uninstalling some applications from C drive and re-installing on the external or second internal drive because with less than 2GB free space left Windows performance will suffer.

Hello I recently purchased a E460 and it came last week. I specced it with the 1080p IPS non-touch screen. A short while ago, I put my laptop on sleep and went away. When I came back an hour later I noticed a HUGE blotch of backlight bleed on the upper right hand corner. This was not present before I left my computer for that hour, so I am really confused as to how it could have just appeared. Anyway I was hoping you guys could give me some advice on how to possibly fix it. And if I do send it in for repair, what is the average turnaround for such problems.Image of my problem: http://i.imgur.com/KfIOaKY.jpg Thanks

I have a system which was built in 2006.

It was, back then, top of the range and even today is still very good.

The issue I have relates to data transfer from PC to Monitor.

I like my MMO games and enjoy a game called GuildWars.

Now, the problem occurs only when in this game.
For some reason, as happened before, my system will stop transmitting to the monitor.
All lights on the tower remain active and indeed the system sounds much the same as when in normal operation.

The signal to the monitor is gone.
I get a black screen with the message no signal and the signal to the monitor can only be restored by rebooting the tower.

Now, my system has been returned to the place of construction and no diagnostic test was able to pinpoint a problem. Indeed everything worked as it should.

I have had other advice ranging from dying graphics card, over worked PSU which has never been changed or failing network card.

Is there anyone here that can give me a definitive answer one way or the other or offer a recommendation?

A:An old problem returns. Need advice.

My immediate thought is an overheating video card (if it's only happening in game).

Try getting some additional cooling for your case.

Whenever I turn my PC monitor on after it has been off for over an hour or so I get either a black screen that fades to grey, or a screen with extreme flickering, that then slowly gets better and better until normal. When the screen is black or grey I can't turn it off. The only way I can get it to work is pulling the power plug out and then waiting a minute and plugging it back in. If I turn the monitor off though, when working, then as long as I turn it on within a few minutes it is okay, but leave it an hour or so and it is back to flickering again. Everytime I turn it on in the morning after around 8 hours of being off, I nearly always have to unplug it from the back of the monitor and then plug it in again to work.

I have an LCD monitor, 17". Any ideas ? Oh and I have 3 PCs setup via KVM so I know it is not a graphics card problem as it happens on all 3.

A:Monitor Problem, any advice ?

Test the setup without the KVM and see if it's monitor problem or the KVM.
I guessing it's most likely some KVM issue.
That's all I can think of.

Okay, so my laptop(Dell Inspiron 1100, XP, P4) has decided that it no longer wants to accept a charge from the power adapter. I have figured out, the power adapter works fine and the batteries hold a charge fine. But when the battery is in the computer and the power cord is connected, it says, AC Power On, but it is running on battery power. As you can tell the battery level in the control panel>power system shows the battery being drained.

Anyway of fixing this problem without having to spend $400 plus? At that point it would make sense to buy a new computer. Problem is, other than this issue, the computer works fine.

A:Power problem, need some advice

those batteries may need replaced. It's not uncommon for the batteries to not hold the charge for a long period of time after the batteries have worn. Apple recalled it's iPods last year because of faulty batteries that wouldn't hold a charge as long as it was supposed to. My old iPod doesn't hold a charge for even half the time it used to. I will bet it's the battery that needs replaced.

My family has a Dell Windows 7 that we got earlier this year. I am the one who mostly uses it (my Mom has her laptop as well). Our previous computer was a 5-year-old Vista that constantly had memory dumps and it got to the point we couldn't use it. Our laptop needed a new battery and had a screen problem. We've had a lot of computer issues the past year or so. Right now everything seems fine.

For probably 2 weeks I had the Google Redirect Virus.

I ran rkill, TDSSKiller, Avast! Scan, MalwareByes, SpyBot Search & Destroy, and I think ComboFix.

I kept hoping something would fix it, but nothing ever did. It normally took me to two or three different sites when it redirected. I blocked those sites on Firefox. It helped.

Avast! said this
C:\Users\Pam\AppData\Local\Temp\CFC0.tmp **INFECTED** Win32:Alureon-AUG
C:ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\DRM\8822.tmp.dat **INFECTED** Win32: Alur

Disk 0 Windows 601 MBR fixed successfully

Microsoft Safety Scanner - 1.0.3001.0
Found and partially removed Trojan:Win32/Alureon
Manual Removal needed

Other scanners would delete a file here and a file there. Most of the time MalwareBytes found nothing. I uninstalled Google Earth and deleted a few programs that I read may have been causing the Redirect. I deleted a few files from the system32 folder that were not supposed to be there.

Anyway, about 5 days ago I left Avast to scan while I was out of the house. I came back ... Read more

I sat down with the computer and looked it over. Wireless was on, connected to the hotel internet.

double clicked it several more times... still nothing.
checked task manager for currently running processes and the 4 instances of iexplorer.exe are showing up as running.

A:Hijackware problem maybe? Could use some advice...

I took the risk to transfer programs from my working computer over to my boss's laptop. Transferred over and ran the following with varying results.

-Microsoft Removal Tool - ran full scan, found 3 items and it said it fixxed them
-Malwarebytes - ran quick scans two times. it found like 650 infections with a few major ones. told it to fix them or delete.
- Internet Explorer v8 32 bit - installed ok, restarted computer, first time i logged in the scren was same as I mentioned about the safe mode... NOTHING on the screen... restarted the computer with the power button and desktop was back up and working... Internet explorer however would still not load... got hourglass, followed by nothing. still showing up running in services list
- installed firefox - installed ok, program opens but with errors on the page... CANNOT load any web page what so ever without firefox crashing. cannot connect to any site or search without the program crashing. Still cannot open internet options page.
- something somewhere is connecting however because its allowing me to do "some" updates like windows updates.

Sill broken overall. no clue what to do

Hi. First of all my problem started with spyware in which i went through all the routines of posting a HJT log etc.. Part of the solutions i recieved involved restarting windows in safe mode. On doing so via the F8 method i continually recieved the message that windows was unable to boot in safe mode due to perhaps a hardware change or a software change.
I then tried to go through start>msconfig etc... to boot in safe mode.
My problem now is that windows will not boot up at all mainly because it has been assigned to always boot in safe mode which it still cannot do. So basically it is going in circles. Booting from the CD and trying a windows repair will also not work as it seems when it wants to reboot after some of the installation the same problem arises. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Please advise if you have any reasons that this is happening OR if you have any solutions.

I was on the phone for about 2 hrs with the Lenovo Cust Svc Rep and he tried everything he could using remote access.
He was able to see the problem after a reboot and concluded that he couldn't fix it.
So, I was transferred to Post-Sales Rep and am now being sent a new computer.
I was able to continue to use the old one until I receive the new one.
I strongly recommend the Lenovo Group for its speed and great Customes Svc.  Most other computer manufacturers would require you to send in the computer and wait for a fix.
Lenovo sent a prepaid label for return, gave me instructions of how to wipe my computer to factory and was fast and courteous in all of the conversations I had with them.
I have an Order # as well as a Ship / Receive date for the new unit.
Great Company and Great Service.

Hi, im after some help from one of you computer wizzies.
I have 3 gig of DDR 400 memory in my pc (2 x 1g 2 x 512). I just installed a new motherboard and everything is running perfect except 1 thing:

Windows is only showing me as having 2 gig of ram instead of 3 gig, in both dxdiag and in system.
My Bios on the other hand, is showing the full 3 gig. It does not matter which way i put the memory sticks in, Windows XP is still only picking up 2 gig. This is not a visual error either as i notice the performance drop, nor are the sticks damaged as Bios is showing the full 3 gig.

Im really stuck here so if anyone knows why this may be happening, please let me know.

May i also add - i just ran Everest and it also is showing 2 gig.
Also it showed 3 gig on windows before i switched motherboard.

Are there any files I should NOT transfer? I have purchased a memory pack but this will only givy me 1gb of extra memory. Do you have any advice/suggestions on how I can improve memory? I do regular disc clean ups. Any help appreciated.

Hi -

I believe you are speaking about hard drive space, not installed physical RAM.

Run msinfo32 and save it as an NFO file -
START | type msinfo32 | the system info viewer will appear | save it in NFO format - you'll see the default NFO file extension when you go to save the file

Zip the NFO file up and attach to your next post.

Hi guys.

I came across this forum and I'm hoping I can get some advice here. My problem is, when I turn on my computer sometimes it starts up normally and everything is fine; other times I turn it on and I see the hard drive light come on, the keyboard LEDs flash on as normal (though the "Num Lock" light never goes solid as it usually does when the computer boots normally) and the LED strip in my computer case flashes as it usually does but the monitor says "No Signal Input" and nothing happens. The computer just sits there as if it's booting up but nothing ever happens. If I keep attempting to start the computer, either by hitting the on/off switch on the front or the power switch at the back I can get it to work eventually. It seems hit or miss though and I can't figure out what causes it to work sometimes and not others.

Now, I'm not sure if this is some sort of boot problem with Windows XP itself or a hardware problem of some kind. I was hoping someone here could pinpoint what it might be that's causing this behavior.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Hi! Today when i turned on my desktop (PC) computer, i turned on the CPU first and then the monitor. The CPU turned on fine but the monitor did not. The green light on my monitor flashes for a fraction of second and then it turned off. I tried it again and again and got the same thing. There was nothing on the screen. When i held the power button, the green light flashed after each second or so. So then I unplugged it from my CPU and then just turned it on to see if it is the problem with monitor or not. when i did that, the green light turned orange after a couple of presses of the power button. So I thought i would bring my old monitor back (this is a crt monitor this time) and when i plugged it in and everything, the same thing happened. Nothing was shown on the monitor and i restarted the computer manually a couple of times and NOTHING at all appeared on both monitors. Can you tell me what the problem might be?
Thank You!

P.S. My regular monitor is LCD and the company is BENQ. My computer is HP. with a 1.5 GB RAM. I am not sure about more technical details because all the information is stored ON THAT computer which i do not have access to. Thanks A lot for reading and helping.

I'm actually trying to create a new compressed drive using Drivespace, but when I run Drivespace it does a surface scan and at 94% it says I have errors that must be fixed before I can compress. I have run Scandisk several times using a Thorough scan and it always states that there are no problems. Any idea what's wrong?

A:{Advice Offered} Scandisk problem

Try shutting down to DOS mode and running scandisk, fix any errors.

Then type EXIT to get back to windows and do a CTRL-ALT-DEL and End Task everything but Explorer. Then try again.

Of course, I highly suggest you do NOT compress your hard drive. It will slow things down and makes it easier for files to become corrupt.

Hello All,

Merry Christmas!!!

I have a slight problem that has been racking my brain for two weeks now. My company recently added an NT print server in order to take some of the load of the main file server also NT. We are running a mix of workstations Win95, Win98, and WinNT. We also run a mix of HP and Ricoh printers. I have only added 7 of the printers so far. Anyway my problem is this. The main server and NT workstations see all 7 printers when I add a printer, however the win95 and 98 workstations are only seeing 4 of them. I have double and triple checked the sharing and securities and all are as they are supposed to be in other words they are shared and everyone has the rights to print. If anyone can help please feel free to do so. I have run out of solution ideas.

My 5 year old computer uses Netscape as default browser and email system. It will get all my email every day without fail.

But the old machine growls and groans so I get a new one.

When it begins downloading my new emails ... some days it will download them all ... most days it will download until it reaches an email that contains a virus ... where it will notify me of the virus ... delete the bug ... and then go into some kind of pause or something ... if you close window and try again ... you get to the exact same place and it repeats.

The new machine had IE for default mail and it has Mcafee for anti-virus. I did download Firefox browser and switched to Firefox Thunderbird email system, but the same thing happens with it.

What should I do?

Thanks in advance ... it's really great to be able to get free advice online to solve these tech problems ... otherwise I'd have to drag the thing downtown.

Thanks again

A:Need Advice on Email Problem - Can't get all of mail

I don't really have an answer to this, but possibly a workaround.

Don't download the e-mails; instead go to the web host directly and delete the infected file from the host server. Do this on the new machine if you can or the old one if nothing else works.

A:{Advice Offered} - Printer problem

ok, correct me if i'm wrong Reuel

i'm just trying to help. firstly, is your printer connected to the server or to the work station?

if it's connected to the server, then it should have an ip address dedicated to the printer, put in the ip in your IE5 and you should be adle to know the status of the printer, pls also ensure that the printer is share enabled

if it's to the workstation, just make sure that the printer is share enabled as well. no ip address involve here. (provided it's not connected via RJ45)

Physically check is the cable is connected properly, a loose connection will result lots of time wasted just to troubleshoot.

Lastly, make sure that both the server & the workstation has the correct driver.

Good luck
