Explorer.exe crashes while opening certain folders

Q: Explorer.exe crashes while opening certain folders

Hello everyone ,

today, I wanted to modify my start orb, so I changed something in explorer.exe. I did back the original up.
When I found that it wasn't really to my liking, I restored the original explorer.exe, and here is were the problems began.

When accessing certain folders, such as my user folder and my external hard drive, explorer.exe just crashes and restarts.

I have included a dump using Debugging Tools for Windows, I hope you can help me!

Specs:
Windows 7 - build 7600 (RTM) 16385 - x64.

Preferred Solution: Explorer.exe crashes while opening certain folders

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello most awesome of !Please-help-me-fix-my-box! forum members!!!

My setup is...
Windows Xp
AMD Athlon64 3000+
3 gigs DDR2 RAM
Nvidia GForce 6600
Asus SLI-Deluxe motherboard
Western digital hard drives
Sony DVD RW DRU-720A
Floppy- FDC generic....

I have this issue I've been working around...
This has been happening for a while, every time I open certain folders, (as you have no doubt read from the title, and on one folder it is an entire drive) my windows explorer crashes, I can still access these drives using a Linux boot and I can still access all files through programs, but if I try to move a file, it will cause a crash in what ever folder I place it in, (not in Linux).

I believe the can't delete folder-"Access Denied" issue is separate but related. This happens only when I cut and paste from one section of the drive to another of the same drive. In which case I am locked out from being able to open the file (says the folder is empty) and I cannot delete one or more files within.

I have run UBCD and done the memory tests with no errors, I'm clean for viruses an malware, I have avg's latest and spybot. I finished doing a HijackThis check before posting this thread and everything was clean. I hope this helps...

Thanks...

See if this will work:

Go to Windows Explorer>Tools>Folder Options>View scroll down and uncheck the box "Use Simple File Sharing", then right click the folder>file in question>Properties>Security>Advanced>Owner>Set Permissions.

Im confused, but I will describe this best I can:

explorer.exe crashes when viewing folders or anything built on explorer.exe (I guess) at exactly 11 seconds in on them. It also randomly crashes every couple hours. Im extremely confused by all this and wondering if anyone knows what is going on.

Thanks to anyone who helps or attempts to do so.

A:XP SP2: explorer.exe randomly crashes and always crashes when in folders

Have you done any recent updates or installed any new software to the computer?

Also, I would suggest downloading HiJackThis! and then including the log file in a post so that it can be looked at by one of the qualified agents here in order to help you out. Also you might try downloading and installing MalwareBytes' Anti-Malware and running it. I have found that program to be quite helpful in identifying potential OS issues.

If you are getting explorer.exe crashes as often as you say, then there may be more serious damage to your operating system that will potentially result in a clean reinstall.

Hi All, got a new laptop with win7pro 64.

In Explorer this command line has always worked in everything from w2000 to win7 Starter.

C:\Windows\explorer.exe /c,C:\MyStuff\Downloads

In the left Panel it would display
c:\MyStuff
........Downloads
....NextFolder
....NextFolder
....etc...

.... (dots required for indenting as this editor stripped out blank spaces)

and in the right Panel it listed the contents of the Download Folder. The search bar at the top would show the full correct Path

With this win7pro for the same command line in the left Panel all that I get is...
c:\

and in the right Panel, the contents of the Download Folder. The search bar at the top shows the full correct Path

I have been chasing around the web and found some similar problems and I have tried the suggestions for them all and still the left panel does not show the Folder tree structure as it should.

On a suggestion I ran sfc and got this...
"Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations."

Any thoughts?

Thanks

A:win7 pro not opening Folders in Explorer

DUH! OK, found it in the
Tools > Folder Options > Navigation Pane

"Show all Folders"
"Automatically expand.."

Had not seen that before for some reason. Maybe it only appears on the 64bit versions.

A:Explorer.exe is crashing when opening certain folders.

Welcome to TSG....

The file could be corrupt delete it and the rar file and re-download it.

The file also could be infected and since opened could have infected your computer please to downlaod and run the following:

To download HJTsetup.exe To Download HijackThis go to the following: http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=tpmod;dl=item5
Filename = 1137518044HJTsetup.exe
Save the file to your desktop.
Double click on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
By default it will install to C:\Program Files\HijackThis.
Continue to click Next in the setup dialog boxes until you get to the Select Additional Tasks dialog.
Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
At the final dialog box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button. It will scan and then ask you to save the log.
Click Save to save the log file and then the log will open in notepad.
At the top of the Notepad HJT log screen, hit Edit then Select All then click Edit and then click Copy doing that copies the text to the clipboard, you won't see it yet....
Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

A security expert should take a look at your log - please be patient.

I have several folders that when I try to open them-- They will open and then a "Send Error Report" window pops up stating that "Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close". The folder will then be forced to close (along with any other folders that I might also have open at the time) and the screen goes blank for a second and then my desktop reappears with all the programs restarting in lower right corner.

One folder will even do the same thing if I just hold my cursor over the folder for a second. It will generate "error" window and semi-crash my windows.

It is not on most of my folders, just 3 or 4. I cannot delete the folders because it will do the same thing as opening it. I cannot move it because same things happens.

I have tried all the fix programs that I have and they crash as soon as the affected folder is scanned.

I have even tried doing scanning by Symantec and Panda and Trend Micro online and they just mysteriously close as soon as they get to the affected folders. BitDefender, Spybot, Ad-Aware and McAfee Stinger also crash or freeze up. So does Norton SystemWorks in its Virus Scan and its WinDocter...

I have tried to delete or move in "Safe Mode"-- same results.

Does anyone have some idea of what is causing this and how to fix it? (Hopefully without having to reformat)

Thanks

Hi guys,

Having a bit of trouble here! There's a certain folder on my external HDD which causes Windows Explorer to crash when I attempt to open it. I've tried running a full virus scan and nothing has been detected, so I'm ruling out anything like that. Could it be down to file corruption?

Also, strangely enough, I copied the folder to my desktop and was able to open it and look through the files, however, as soon as I try to sort the files by certain parameters (date, size, etc.), it causes Windows Explorer to crash again.

Any idea what's causing this and how it can be fixed?

Many thanks!

(P.S. I apologise if I posted this in the wrong section!)

There is a big chance that something that is attached to explorer.exe is causing this issue, have you tried a clean boot? otherwise try to disable all Explorer.exe plugin's, see this article for that

On a new computer I installed windows XP pro onto a seagate 200gb sata hard drive. I have a 160 gb western digital IDE hard drive installed. I also installed all windows updates and installed basic software, such as Office XP, McAfee, Firefox, etc.

Whenever I open My Computer or windows explorer and browse through folders, after a little while explorer crashes and then restarts. This also sometimes happens when I open the start menu. Occasionally, Dr Watson postmortem debugger is triggered and the computer freezes until I end the process from the task manager.

Using a windows explorer substitute, ExplorerXP, has no problems when I browse the directories on my hard drives. Any ideas? Does explorer crash with large SATA hard drives?

Thanks

I'm at my wits end.

I have a couple of folders on 2 different drives that have .mp4 video files in them.
Whenever I attempt to open the folders, Explorer.exe (or the replacement I tried) crashes.

Here's my specs and what I've tried so far:

Windows 7, 64bit, all current updates for Windows and drivers, etc.
12 Gigs RAM, Nvidia GTX 970.

I can delete the files in a DOS window.
I already instructed Explorer to NOT show Thumbnails.
I have scaned with Malwarebytes, etc and am not infected.
A run of System File Checker reported several issues that it could not fix.
None of them involved Explorer.exe, but some were interesting:

Hello, and thanks in advance for helping me out.
I am using a Windows XP SP2 machine with 1.2 ghz processor and 640 mb of ram.
My antivirus is NAV 10 corporate, it's up to date, and I also recently ran and updated Adaware and Spybot S&D.

Now for my problem. - There is one certain folder on my hard drive that crashes explorer.exe every time I open it. The folder contains some video, picture, audio, and text files. I scanned the folder with Norton and turned up nothing in the way of viruses. I checked for errors on the drive and it turned up nothing.
One thing that baffles me is that explorer doesn't crash immediately. If I click fast enough, I can view files from the folder, like a video for instance. But about the time the video gets started, I get the error message saying explorer.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. I know lots of people have this error and this problem, but most of the posts I've read about this seem to be a little more general, in that they are crashing at random times.
I only have this problem with this one folder. The rest of the hard drive works fine.
I think that somehow a file within the folder must be corrupt, or maybe there's a bad spot where that folder is located on the hard disk. Is this a possibility?
Really, I suppose what I need to know is: How can I figure out which file (if it is one particular file) is causing this crash?

First note- I have ruled out malware causes for now. I've run scans with MBAM(quick plus selective specific folder scans)), SAS(quick and full) and TDSSkiller, and found nothing at all.

Second note- a reboot seems to have cleared the issue, for now. I'll monitor it though. I just want to know the cause.

Okay so... first off I had clogged the RAM some by running Firefox overnight a couple nights to play some "idle" type games. I play them a lot, and I really should stop. Second, I bought an MP3 player as a birthday gift for someone and had to load music onto it(they lack the means). It is a USB 1.1 device so file transfers were slow and it took about 2 hours to get everything on. I suspect this clogged Explorer.

This started shortly after finishing that task. I put in a micro SD card to put some files onto it, created a fresh folder and... the window opened then minimized. The taskbar showed it there but with a generic icon and clicking did nothing. I could close it by clicking the X box. Took a bit of work, removed and reseated the card but it persisted. Thinking maybe the SD card was causing it I wanted to run a test on the card- opening a local folder did the same thing PLUS I got a popup to update Javascript- legit, I believe. I ran malware scans and found nothing. Eventually proceeding it seemed that if I copied and pasted a folder name it would definitely cause this when working with the SD card, typing the name manually let me proceed. Okay, all is fine, st... Read more

A:Windows explorer crash while opening folders/file

It may be related to some Explorer extension that was installed and crashing on network drives? Try disabling installed programs "shell integration" as much as you can to test.

Also, you probably want to install Windows 7 Service Pack 1, as it might fix something related to this crash, in addition to some other minor bugfixes.

1. Please update your Internet Explorer iaw the latest Cumulative Security Update, issued two days ago.

2. Right-click My Computer, select Manage, go to the Event Viewer, and post back all Events that you consider relevant to the IE hanging.

3. Perform a cleanup of your system disc, including the Temporary Internet files for deletion.

4. In IE, go to the Tools menu -> Internet Options, and in the General tab, under the Temporary Internet files press the Settings... button and post back what you've got there, as well.

We have a Windows 7 virtual machine running in VMWare (under Windows 8). The virtual machine has 2 processors and 4GB RAM. All the VM files are located on an external SSD connected via USB.

While browsing files in Windows Explorer (specifically trying to locate a file by drilling down a tree) the machine bluescreened with the "PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA".

It would not reboot (stayed on the windows startup screen for 20 minutes before we gave up), and it would not System Repair (Tried for over 15 minutes and then failed), but it was able to System Restore to this morning after Windows Updates.

This issue has occurred twice before; once was with a different physical machine.

Welcome aboard.

The crash dump you supplied is very silent about anything.

BTW, you may need to follow the guide: Troubleshooting Explorer.exe Crashing Issues.

And, answer one question please ... is it happening everywhere, or for any particular folder/folders only? If the second one is true, what do those folders contain?

I have a file on my desktop folder where I keep anything that I've downloaded. its a pretty hefty file but its never caused any problems for me until now. when I open it, I have about 5 seconds before a message box appears that says "windows explorer has stopped working" and it has to restart, closing any explorer windows. no other file does this and it only just started the other day. I haven't downloaded anything recently that could cause this. I've tried deleting it but I have to permanently delete the entire folder because it's too big for the recycle bin. I don' want to delete it in case I delete something that I would prefer to keep, and I can't move anything out of it because it crashes before I can C+P or move the file. It's been a while since I have been experiencing crashes of Windows 7 explorer when I open an internet browser. I've tried mozilla, chrome and IE, but still, all of them make the explorer crash. Although the internet browser works fine, i can't swich windows for like five minutes... and then it comes back to normal. I know, it's really weird, but can someone help me?
If so, thank you very much!

Hi all,

I don't know if this is the appropriate section, but I'm having trouble with my MSN Explorer.

Whenever I try to open the "Download Manager" or try to download something (which automatically opens the Manager), the browser crashes. I can download things using either Firefox or IE and I've had this issue before, found a command somewhere online I could run (using "Run") and that solved the problem. However, I can't seem to find that command (which was on another forum somewhere) and was hoping someone here knew what it is.

Thanks!

Hello,

Since yesterday my pc suddenly started to generate explorer.exe crashes on everything that I try to do. Opening a file in Notepad by "browsing", trying to open "My Computer" or "My Documents" and even trying to browse for a program by using the Task Manager.

When I logon, explorer seems to start fine (sometimes) or immediately when the background is loaded, the error is thrown and the loop initiates...
Sometimes it stops looping the error after 4 - 5 times and then I have to stay away from any file browser, but mostly this is a never ending loop of explorer crashes.
I've tried the following fixes:
- sfc /scannow ===> no errors detected/solved
- malwarebytes ====> nothing detected
- panda antivirus / trendmicro Housecall ===> no virusses detected
- ccleaner (clean register included) ===> no help at all
- system restore to a point before the last windows update ===> no solution

A:Bug with opening folders in windows explorer on Windows 7 RTM - not opening in same window!

This happened on my Windows 7 PC and it was due to an install of Sourcegear Vault 3.0 that overwrites a registry entry used by many programs. The three it affected on my PC were Internet Explorer 8 (most links will not open), Windows Explorer (double click opens a new search window) and MS SQL Server Management Studio 2008 errors with COM error. This is all due to two registry entries containing {B8DA6310-E19B-11D0-933C-00A0C90DCAA9} overwriting the correct ones.To fix this, save the info below into a reg file and run it to correct the registry entries on your PC. My roommate first mentioned she was having problems with the cursor in her word attachments from emails. She asked me to see what I could. After a hour of so of searches, I was able to fix her problem by deleting the Word DataApp folder.

Then I wanted to clean up her laptop for her (Toshiba running Vista Home). I ran a checkdisk which took forever and analyzed for defragment, which turned out to not be necessary....I could not access my defragment tool via my usual right-click on C: properties, tools, etc. because anytime I right-clicked on C: I got a "Explorer could not work" and "has to restart", time and time again, no matter what option I chose in the right-click menu. So I ended up finding an indirect route to analyze/defragment through the help menu.

This right-click menu problem led me to more internet searching and I found shellview references, but that was no help either. Then I figured there is something really wrong with this computer.

Next I wanted to run a spybot check but had many difficulties installing it (had to "run as administrator") but even then I was unable to download updates so it was impossible to run a check for problems.

So here I am in your forum. I have followed the 5 steps, and you'll notice that HiJackThis could not install via step 5.

Recently my Videos folder became unaccessible as it would crash Explorer after a couple of seconds after it opens. Yes, it does open, I can go into a subfolder/click on a file before it decides to die. I'm running Windows 7 64bit with a TB harddrive. That drive in particular had about 750 gbs, of which the Videos folder is unsing up 167.

I did some research and found that it may have been due to that folder having too many large files. I personally think that my computer is more than adequate to handle them, but tried switching the view from Thumbnails to List, which didn't help at all.

Oh and of course I ran virus-scan and malware scan and all that, found nada.

I also saw that it may be due to a corrupt video file, which does seem possible, but I do not know a way to solve that problem, as do not know which file it could be, and even if I did I would have no way of getting to it before it crashes.

Deleting the folder is not an option. There are simply too many valuable videos collected over time in there (no not pr0n, so scratch that off the possible list of problems...)

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

When I went to view the details, it had something pertaining to the "shdocvw.dll" module and I tried finding other solutions to it, but nothing seems to work so far. If you can help me out, that would be great because I can't even open .zip files that I download or open my music folder.

Run the System File Checker

Go to the Run box on the Start Menu and type in:

sfc /scannow ( sfc if not reconized) (Note that there is a space between sfc and /scannow)

This command will immediately initiate the Windows File Protection service to scan all protected files and verify their integrity, replacing any files with which it finds a problem.

Explorer crashes when opening a certain folder containing video clips.Pls help me figure out whats causing it...

A:Explorer crashes when opening a certain folder containing video clips

These crashes were caused by memory corruption/exception (Cx05) probably a driver.
Please run these two tests to verify your memory and find which driver is causing the problem.

* If you are overclocking anything reset to default before running these tests.
In other words STOP!!!

* If you have a Raid update its Driver.

Memtest.

Quote:
*Download a copy of Memtest86 and burn the ISO to a CD using Iso Recorder or another ISO burning program. Memtest86+ - Advanced Memory Diagnostic Tool

*Boot from the CD, and leave it running for at least 5-7 passes.

Just remember, any time Memtest reports errors, it can be either bad RAM or a bad motherboard slot.

Test the sticks individually, and if you find a good one, test it in all slots.

Any errors are indicative of a memory problem.

If a known good stick fails in a motherboard slot it is probably the slot.

The problem occurs only when I use Control Panel to open the fonts folder. There are no problems when opening the fonts folder directly from My Computer.

Hello!

About since I installed jdownloader this afternoon (and afterwards removed "search protect" with AdwCleaner and Malwarebyte Anti-Malware), my Windows explorer regularly freezes.
It does so whenever I do a right-click on any folder or disk or on the free space inside a folder or disk.
It also crashes whenever I open folder, which I have not recently opened or to which I added a big file (bigger than about 1 MB) recently. I could open some folders since this error came up but after adding a file to them, this is not possible anymore. Windows explorer being able to open some folders is probably due to it cashing/indexing some information.
I can read everything using cmd (cd & dir) and execute files directly though.

In safe mode Windows explorer works fine.

What I did so far:
- Following this guide (Right-click is slow or weird behavior caused by context menu handlers) I removed all the handlers in the registry in HKCR\AllFileSystemObjects\shellex\contextmenuhandlers, HKCR\Folder\shellex\contextmenuhandlers and HKCR\Directory\shellex\contextmenuhandlers. Deletion of one handle in HKCR\Directory\shellex\contextmenuhandlers called "WorkFolders" only produces an error. I therefore could not delete this one. It did not help. Afterwards I recovered the registry keys.
- I used system recovery to switch back to a state from the day before yesterday.
- I tried disabling all the files in auto-start using the task-manager with no improvement.
- I ran &... Read more

I'm not sure when it started, but when I open a certain folder on a network share windows explorer "looks for a solution" and then closes. There is only one folder this happens to and it only contains other folders, html docs, and php docs.

We have dozens of computers that access it fine including 2 identical machines loaded with identical images so I am assuming the user (or software) did something.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

A:[SOLVED] Explorer crashes when opening one specific folder

The user that logs into this computer with the issue, have them to log into the identical machine that does not have the issue as him/herself.

Does the issue persist, if it does you know it is probably a permissions issue.
If the problem does not persist then you narrowed it down to that computer or their profile on that computer.

Hello,

after moving to new location or deleting to recycle bin any files or folders AND ONLY after closing the last open folder in the taskbar, after those, when I try to open any folder,
explorer crashes and needs to be restarted (Windows Explorer has stopped working... Windows Explorer is restarting)

If those two are not performed (moving/deleting + closing last opened folder) there is no issue.

I ran SFC /SCANNOW, which has found and fixed 1 issue, but explorer still keeps crashing.

Where else should I try start troubleshooting (with less impact possible)?
Thank you!
