Thinkpad S1 Yoga: HDD stops and starts spinning on...

Q: Thinkpad S1 Yoga: HDD stops and starts spinning on...

Hi guys, I've got a Thinkpad S1 Yoga 8GB i5 with a standard HDD 500GB and what I've notice is:one barely notices that the HDD is spinning when starting up or when left idle after booting.I can move the laptop around and the HDD is always as quiet. I bought another Thinkpad S1 Yoga 4GB i3 with the same standard HDD 500GB and I'm noticing the following differences, so wondering if there's some kind of a problem with that hard drive? As soon as you power it up the HDD starts spinning and it's quite loud (compared to the laptop above, ie, it's not really loud as such, but compared to my 1st one you can definately notice that it's spinning whereas the other one is almost always quiet). It keeps continuously spinning once it's booted up, even when idle (and even though the task manager and resource monitor doesn't indicate anything using the disk, it's reported as 0% usage a lot of times)then when I move the laptop the most minimum, the HDD stops spinning and then starts again, so if I'm using it in on the move, you can notice that the HDD is continuously stopping and then starting, which seems quite weird to me. I had never noticed that before. I've tried Win 7 pro, Win 8.1 pro and Win 10 pro and it's happening in all of them. The Lenovo diagnostics for that HDD don't report any problem either.... Any idea if the 2nd HDD is behaving correctly? or anything I could change to make it work like my 1st laptop? Thank you!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

My IBM Thinkpad 770 has started to power on......and shut down...on its own. Would the internal power supply unit by the issue? Or may it be just the on/off switch going bad? If anybody has experienced this before, I'd appreciate you fix info! Thanks!

I don't see how it would from OFF, but if you have the notebook on Standby or Hibernate, then yeah its possible.

I have two staff members with different Yoga models, but with the same pen issue. Say, for instance, OneNote is open. The pen doesn't draw or write, but it can select and still be recognized. When I try using an old stylus from an HP Elitebook, it works TOTALLY fine - even the button on the pen functions properly. This suddenly started after months of the Lenovo pens working fine. I thought maybe it was a driver issue, but it can't be as the HP pen works.... I'm thinking it's the pen itself just getting worn down? It looks okay though but may be just a little loose... Any help / direction would be greatly appreciated!

I have a problem with my Thinkpad Yoga 460 which started to occur about 2 weeks ago. Sometimes after bootup the keyboard does not work when I have to supply my passphrase for the hard disk encryption. The solution I have in this situation is to turn the battery of in the UEFI setup. Then pressing the power button for 10 seconds and then enabling the battery again with the power cable. This works reliable to fix the issue, but it is very annoying and when I am at the university there is no socket to enable the battery again. Is something broken or is there a workaround for this issue?

I experienced a bizarre problem today and although I've resolved it now I thought I'd post it here just in case someone else experiences the same issue. The issue was in regards to WiFi not working properly on my Lenovo ThinkPad Yoga S1. After a restart my computer's internet (with WiFi on) would work for a few minutes then it would stop. Long story short, I tried various things, and even uninstalled Norton and other software which I thought may have been a culprit but still the same issue. I also used a USB to Ethernet port (since there is no built in Ethernet port in the ThinkPad Yoga) and connected my computer with a cable and disabled the WiFi to see if it was the wireless hardware not working. Unfortunately still the same issue. Finally I noticed in the Windows Task Manager a process called "Discover.exe". It turned out this was using some noticeable amount of CPU and wondered what this was doing as I hadn't seen that before. I found out that this was a piece of software bundled in with my computer called Lenovo EMC Storage Connector. I'm not sure why it was running but I ended this process. Viola, suddenly my internet was working again! This time no problems.I uninstalled this software utility to make sure this doesn't cause this issue again. I can't understand why Lenovo bundles this software but this seems to have a serious defect and has cost me hours of trying to work out what was going wrong. I hope this is hel... My PSU Fan stops Spinning and my PC freezes, doesn't crash or shut down until I force it to shut down. All my other case fans and Cpu fan keep spinning. Is my PSU dying and do I need to replace it?

Hi, my PC had this problem for quite a long time now. Sometimes the HDD just stops spinning randomly and starts again after a while, maybe 5 sec or even up to 30 sec of freezing time. During this time every thing on the PC freezes, and the HDD light is not shining.
I have thought about several problems, but I can't decide which one is the real one.

1. PSU supply insufficient
This is quite impossible since I've got a 550W PSU with 80 Plus Bronze, which means my PC's max PSU supply is around 600W. But my PC only got a GTX 460 OC edition and no other PSU requiring hardwares.
CPU is i5-2500, 8GB RAM with two HDD. The max usage should be the most 400W.

2. Main/Secondary HDD
I accidentally made my old 160GB HDD as the main HDD while the new WD Caviar Black 1TB as the secondary HDD. I highly suspect that it's the 1TB HDD that is not spinning, since most of my stuff are stored on that HDD, but not the 160GB one. Im wondering if setting a disk as a secondary storage will affect its priority and performance. I also got the Intel Rapid Storage thingy on my PC, but it can only detect the 160GB HDD, and not the Caviar Black.

3. Sandy Bridge MB Flaw
Well I bought my PC in Jan 2011, that time Intel just released the Sandy Bridge. The P67 and H67 motherboards at that time had flaws, which had problem in the SATA ports on the MB. The problem will cause slow degration in the hardware connected to the SATA ports overtime. But the flaws only occured in the 3GBps port... Read more

A:HDD stops spinning randomly

You didn't list "faulty hard drive" as a possibility (even new hard drives have been known to be faulty).
Whether you configure a drive as your main (system) drive or just for storage wouldn't cause the problem you describe or affect it's performance generally. I would test the Caviar Black drive with WD's Data Lifeguard for Windows diagnostic software. Get it here: http://support.wdc.com/product/download.asp?groupid=613&sid=3&lang=en

Hi guys,

Someone brought me their laptop yesterday, not usually my kinda thing to do repairs but I thought it was gonna be a software issue but no
Anyway, the problem was constant BSoDs on Vista so I figured I'd install 7 which worked fine for a bit but it was still playing up given it was a fresh install and then some more blue screens! I ran Windows Memory Diagnostic and it said there were errors within seconds but I couldn't get back onto 7 to view them. This morning I cleaned it out and swapped the memory to the other port but the screen wouldn't even switch on then, so I put it back and made sure it was seated properly and ran memory diagnostic again and no errors! Success! The only thing is, the fan isn't spinning it spins for about 5 seconds but then nothing and I imagine soon enough it'll overheat.
If anyone has any suggestions I'd be very grateful!

A:Fan stops spinning after boot

Check temps -

- Download SpeedFan - Access temperature sensor in your computer
- Download Speccy 1.14.288

The fan on my HP dv7 laptop is on for a few seconds after boot-up, then reduces/ turns off (??). When temps get high, it turns on; variable speed as needed.

Hi there, I'm in the middle of my first PC build and I've come across a problem that I need some help with.

My GPU appears to be working fine until I insert it into the slot on my motherboard the fan instantly stops spinning. The rest of the motherboard doesn't appear to hinder at all.

CPU: Intel i5 2600K
Motherboard: ASUS P8Z68-VLE
GPU: Gigabyte ATI HD6770
PSU: SilverStone 750W SST-ST75F-P

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Let me know if there is any more information needed to access the problem.

A:GPU fan stops spinning, first PC build

You shouldn't be installing a graphics card (or any card) while the PC is still on. It's risky to the heath of your components. The graphics card needs to be connected to external power before it will work anyway. Connect it while the PC is off, then power it up.

I built a computer, and I am using a Core™ i5-3570K Processor w/ Gigabyte GA-Z77-D3H Motherboard, and I am using the stock CPU Fan (that comes with the Processor), I noticed that the CPU Fan only spins when the computer is booting, then stops spinning when it has finished booting (when windows has fully loaded). When I go into my BIOS Settings, the CPU Fan still spins. But when it boots Windows, it suddenly stops. I have tried unplugging my CPU Fan from the motherboard and plugging it in again, but that doesn't seem to fix it. It is in the correct socket... does anyone know how to fix this? I'm quite sure it's a BIOS Settings Issue (please let me know if it is not), if it is how to do I fix it from the BIOS?

My computer is a Gateway 200 series laptop (aka crap-I-should've-never-bought). I'm running on Windows XP Pro, and I've just had to reformat my computer because I've been getting "Operating System Not Found" errors. That's not the problem though, the thing is that the hard drive randomly just stops spinnning and the whole computer just crashes, does a memory dump, then restarts. Sometimes it stops spinning and starts again and stops and starts until the whole thing just craps out and I have to reformat it again because when I restart the computer, it does the whole "Operating System Not Found" thing again. I can't download service pack 2 or install anything because of these random hard drive stops. Is it a problem with the hard drive disk or is it a problem with whatever controls it?

I installed my new Hyper 212 EVO cpu cooler yesterday. It was fine, 40C idle etc. 53C load.

Then I started getting crashes in the middle of playing games. Basically, my PC seems to stay on.. the GPU fan is still spinning. But as soon as my monitor screen turns black, my cpu fan stops spinning and the light from my top exhaust case fan stops, so I assume the case fans stop too. I recall seeing my back exhaust fan not spinning as well..

When turning on my PC, sometimes the cpu fan will still not work. I have to unplug the fan and plug it back in to fix this issue.

Windows 8 gave me a notification that told me that my drive had issues that needed to be repaired, so I went to cmd and ran chkdsk to see what's up and it told me I had corrupt 182 attributes along with an incorrect volume bitmap and a snapshot error. Defraggler tells me my drive health is GOOD, though.

After running a chkdsk /scan on boot up and all, my Windows 8 did not load after the loading screen. Just a black screen, numlock blinking, mouse cursor flashing. I tried doing a system restore, it tells me my anti virus might not be allowing it to function correctly. I tried diagnosing the problem with a recovery usb stick, it tells me it can't fix the issue.

I can get into safe mode, but the problem with it randomly not spinning still persists.

My computer was perfectly fine with the stock fan previously.. I'm worried that my motherboard is fried in some way. I'm going to try and reinstall the stock heatsink... Read more

Hmm, sound like you might have shorted out a few things on your MB installing that big boy. At the same time your hard drive is crashing.

It all started when I was running Pro Tools on my computer. I was using a lot of CPU (not more than normal) and suddenly my computer froze. The keyboard/mouse were useless so I had to restart. But after restarting the hard drive was not recognized by my motherboard. In fact my motherboard barely could boot up the bios. I couldn't access the bios. Eventually I let it sit for a couple of hours and when I restarted I could boot up and as soon as Windows loaded I got the blue screen of death.

So 3 months later and multiple dead ends, the ending is the same; the computer freezes and then the HD stops spinning.

I tried another hard drive, installed Vista, got the blue screen once but it seems to work ok. Granted I haven't run any programs that require a lot of memory. All my sticks of RAM work, I tried updating drivers and that didn't solve it. I removed my video card so now am using the on board video card. I disabled the sound card just in case. what am I missing.. Um...anyone have any suggestions? Is this a software or hardware glitch? Could it be my power supply? The power supply fan is running and so is the CPU fan. The case has been off since this happened so plently of air flow. I think the case temperature said 84-83 degrees F. The bios is loaded as FAIL SAFE defaults.

okay so for the past 2-3 days my computer has been crashing, and it's almost the same thing every time: the screen glitches with pink, white, and green tiles and lines, the cursor disappears, the screen goes black, and the hard drive stops spinning. All the lights on the front of the computer stay on, the fans stay on, and the monitor doesn't say anything about not receiving a signal. The first time it happened I tried turning it on right away and it booted up and let me sign in, but as it was loading the desktop and icons it glitched again, and froze. after I shut down and let it sit for a while it worked just fine until the next day when it did the same thing again, but twice in one day and with a shorter time between freezes. Today I had a WerFault.exe error pop up and when I clicked ok on it the bottom half of my screen turned pinkish and the computer froze when I restarted the pink tone was still there but it did not show up on any windows that I opened and when the background changed it went away.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance.

P.S. half of the time it has happened I have been playing StarCraft2 if that makes any difference.

P.P.S. I am running Windows 7 64-bit.

I posted a similar question earlier and people referred me to the Yoga (much appreciated).  However, I was interested in the 2.6 lb carbon version with touch screen capabilities.  Asus has a Spin 7 model that is very good at 2.65lb, but I miss the red mouse toggle in the middle of the keyboard and Asus's track pad was designed too large....causing unintended tapping.  The Yoga, while nice, is heavier than I was looking for.  The 14 inch screen is about 3.3lb? the 12 inch at 3? I thought that some of the earlier Thinkpad Carbons had touch screen and was hoping they would make a return soon.  Thanks,

I just bought a new mobo, processor and ram for my PC, kept the PSU, DVD, Video card and HDD.

After replacing everything, I started it up and got the failure no bootable system found. Since I replaced so much, I thought it possible this could happen but I planned ahead to reinstall the OS anyway.

I put in the windows disk, installed windows, restarted and booted into windows. Put the mobo driver CD in, ran the multi-driver installer, installed all the drivers and restarted and got the no boot disk error again.

Went into BIOS, made sure HDD was detected and the primary boot device. Everything A-OK. Then I restarted and now it starts and within 3 seconds powers down. Holds about 5 seconds then tries to start again, but powers down after 3 seconds. It did this about 4-5 times before I shut it down.

Not really sure where to go from here. Originally I had 3 HDDs all hooked up, so I took all them off and only left the main OS and DVD drive, so everything but the core hardware is installed.

A:PC starts, stops, starts, stops, etc...

I've made some headway. After posting this, I took about an hour break and came back, hit the power button and booted right up. Did some more installs, restarted a few times, good to go.

Then I started hooking devices back up. I had 2 more HDD's, one SATA and one IDE. Sata worked fine, but then when i hooked up the IDE I get the boot failure error again. HDD boot order is correct, but still nothing. It's the only IDE component I have but never seems to work.

Also, after I started trying to hook it up I got the power on/off again. Sometimes it never starts, some times it powers up/down once or twice then boots on the subsiquent one. Seems to work fine when it's finally up though. I don't think it's a power issue since I can keep the IDE HD powered up, I just can't connect the cable, but it would seem to be.

I am working on a Toshiba Satellite M45-S169 running Win XP It keeps shutting itself down. Basically, it will shut itself off with increasing frequency, and then, at some point, it will shut off and refuse to restart. When I try to start it, the fan turns on, but nothing else no hard drive, no monitor. If I hold down the power button, it will just continue to restart and do the same thing. It takes sometimes 20-30 tries to get it up and running again. Once it's on, it's okay, but obviously something is messed up. I have checked the hard drive with CHKDSK and all is ok. I used a program from Toshiba to check the memory, hard drive, video, audio etc and all is ok. The heatsink is not blocked and I don't see anything fried on the motherboard. Any suggestions would greatly appreciated. I am about to pull out my hair on this one. I forgot to mention I did a defrag and virus scan while the computer was up and running. I also checked msconfig to see if there was anything running that I could eliminate to correct the problem. I looked in control panel to be sure there were no unrecognized programs loaded.

I've got a Gigabyte GA-K8NS Pro motherboard with a AMD Athlon 64 2800 processor. The heatsink fan stops and starts during bootup.

At first I didn't notice the pattern so I got a replacement fan from my supplier because I thought the fan was failing.

The pattern is that the fan starts when I power up the machine. During the BIOS screen the fan shuts down. Finally, just after the the "Windows XP Startup.wav" plays the fan restarts and stays running for the entire time I've got the machine on.

I don't know but perhaps the fan has always done this and I'm just now noticing.

Has anyone ever heard of something like this?

This setup is about a month to a month and a half old.

Ok, so I've got a new PC, first time I turned it on, it totally stopped working, can't move mouse, can't use keyboard, you know, totally blocked. So I've restarted it and then it was okay, so I've ignored it. Now, after 3-4 days, avast detected some malware, around 22, I've choose to "move to chest", but 4 files couldn't be moved, so I choose to delete, I got a message that it would be deleted after reboot, so I've restarted it and same thing happened, PC totally blocks, programs start turning on (Skype, Avast...etc) after they turned on, PC blocks. Anyway, I tought that avast, since it was free and all, was actually reporting files that aren't actually viruses, but are important for windows to work, so now it blocks all the time, when It starts up, because those files were important, tought that's my guess, you know the best.

Now I'm in safe mode (with networking) to try and find some help, everything's okay now, so it might be some program that's causing this when I start it normally.

I have windows xp sp 3, AMD Athlon II x4 630, 2.8 ghz, 3 gb of ram. Tell me if you need anything else?

I need this really fast, it's important, so please help me as soon as you can, I need my PC. Or at least tell me if you can help, so I don't have to carry it to PC service, they really keep it for a long time, like for month, it's annoying.

Thank you. Also, a guy who installed everything made a backu... Read more

I have a problem I can't solve.

The netsh.exe file starts and stops each 4. second and the CPU useage goes up and down between 0-10% all the time. I didn't do any thing to start the netsh.exe file, but I've found out that if I stops the npfsvice.exe file it stops.

As far as i know the netsh.exe file is a systemfile and npfsvice.exe is something for the Norman Personal Firewall

I have a 3year free support on my computer.
So I've tried to contact Norman about this, but they won't help me since the program was preinstalled on my computer. So I tried to contact Fujitsu Siemens, but the computer was older than 6 months. Then I tried to contact the shop I bought it in and they told me to call a number that cost $4/min

I would be glad to help you.

Sounds like your tech support people are playing the old hot potato game with you. Shame on them. Well, it doesn't matter. We will help you here.

netsh.exe is a Windows utility for command line operations.

See below for more.

But lets take this from the beginning.
It would be very helpful if you could post a HiJackThis log for us. HiJackThis is a diagnostic and repair tool that tells us some very basic information about your computer, including OS, internet browser version, and service packs, which helps us to analyze your problem. So please download HiJackThis and post your log. It is important to have the most recent version of HiJackThis. The most current version is v1.98.2.
HijackThis instructions (~157KB) Download HiJackThis (written by Merijn Bellekom) from
Save HijackThis.exe into its own permanent directory, NOT in a TEMPorary folder or on the DESKTOP. Temporary folders get cleaned out periodically and are often destinations for viruses and spyware. So you don't want it there. If you place HJT on the Desktop, then all of your logs and backups will get spread out over the desktop. That is not efficient. For simplicity, I recommend c:/program files/HJT/
Close all windows, programs and especially internet browsers.

Hi folks....
Here is my problem. When I turn on my computer, It powers up and before anything flashes onto the screen, it just dies,(everything turns off except monitor). I then turn the switch back off and on and then it powers up normally. This has only happened twice, last time was this morning.
Any idea what might be happening? My system is a home built I got from Sis-in-law. It is a pentium 100mhz w/ 1gig scsi hdd and scsi cd-rom with 32 megs ram. Like I said it works now since I'm posting but could this be a warning? Thanks in advance.

I'd say that your power supply is on the verge of going out. Luckily for those older system power supply's are not expensive. But i'd look into buying a new one soon. Hope this helps.

Here is a solution that has worked in the past, so it's worth trying.

1. Turn off your laptop, unplug all wires, and remove the battery.

2. Hold the power button for thirty seconds.

3. Afterwards, reattach the battery and connections.

4. Boot the notebook up and see if the battery will charge now.

Let me know if that solution works for you or not. Best of luck!

At first my computer would not reboot. Then I unplugged everything and took out the memory chips and moved it so I could get to it. When I plugged everything back in the computer would start-up and shut-down in 5sec. intervals. It only stopped when I unplugged the ATX_12V power supply to the motherBoard. It is the power for the CPU. It is a Gigabyte 695p motherboard. I do not know if it is the power supply or motherboard or CPU chip. Can you help me?

A:Computer starts and stops

First you can try taking out the memory sticks again and re-seat them and see if the problem goes away.

Another thing, try clearing the cmos and see if that helps as well. Refer to your motherboard manual for the cmos jumper location.

Ok, I have been looking all over and been at it now over 6 hours so I am pretty ticked off right now. Just got a new desktop today with Windows 7 and a WRT610N Router along with a WUSB600N V2 dongle as the tower had no room in it for my PCI card. Anyways, after figuring out the CD rom that came with the dongle was nothing but fail, I found the latest driver on the linksys site, that got me futher, all the way to the same problem I am having with the ralink driver. I pick up the networks and what not, when I go to connect however the green slider makes it just to the end and stops moving, and nothing happens no matter how long you wait patiently.

I am never prompted for a pass. I tried turning off that secure thing on the linksys router, it made no difference, I am frustrated and out of ideas, any suggestions? I called linksys support and the douche on the other end of the line insisted on getting me the drivers again, and put me on hold for 10 minutes when I finally hung up.

A:Starts to connect and stops....

Get the best driver. Try different ones if you need to.

Set the router to 100% transmit power, beacon interval=500ms and change the wireless channel its radio broadcasts on.

I am currently having an issue where my PC suddenly starts, and then stops booting up. The Monitor screen does not turn on when it starts either, but everything seems to be working correctly. Everything turns on as expected, but then my PC just stops running after about 1.5 seconds, and then tries to boot up again. My motherboard is an MSI Pro Series Intel B250 LGA 1151 DDR4 USB 3.1 micro-ATX Motherboard (B250M Pro-VD) and the "EZ De-bug" lights flash on when I attempt to turn the computer on. I have no idea what to do. ANy suggestions?

Hi Folks,

My daughter's Dell computer has run fine up until recently. When she starts her computer, everything starts up normally, but then all the icons on the desktop vanish, only to reappear 10 - 15 seconds later. This continues to occur for about 5-8 minutes, and then they just disappear altogther. I can make them reappear at that point by using the Task Manage run command. When I open Task Manager and watch the processes, explorer.exe disappears and reappears (in concert with the icons of course). Programs run once opened, but the desktop continues to disappear and reappear.

She was running for a period of time without virus software (I know, I know, what was she thinking). I have loaded Norton Anti-Virus, updated virus definitions and scanned her machine (22 viruses found and quarantined), but the intermittent explorer.exe thing is still there.

Any suggestions prior to me just wiping the disk clean and reloading Windows? Thanks

A:explorer.exe stops and starts

Hello and Welcome to TSF

The security team can help you with those. You are probably still infected. We cannot assist you with this issue here in the Microsoft Support Forum.

Please read this sticky: http://www.techsupportforum.com/f112...ed-203704.html

If you cannot complete any of the 5 steps for whatever reason, just continue on with the next one until they are all completed, and post your logs in The HJT Help Forum; where an Analyst will assist you. However, it is very important to make mention of any of the steps that you were not able to complete.

After you?ve posted your logs, please be patient, as the Security Team Analysts are very busy.
