I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello and welcome,

Have you tried turning it on via the Novo button instead of the main power button?

My system is old, I know.

MSI Neo2 Nforce3 + HD4650 Radeon AGP + 2 GB mem + AMD Athlon 3000+

However, I wanted to try Windows 8.1 Enterprise Evaluation for it and was able to install it successfully with 32 bit version (64 bit didn't work). I installed Radeon legacy AGP Hotfix 12.6 drivers that seem to work for the old AGP card giving Youtube HD playback! Not too shabby for a single core beast.

So I have been happy with the system performance (faster to boot than XP etc.).

However, I have encountered two problems that I haven't been able to resolve:

1 - Realtek Gigabit Ethernet (8111) fails to initialize the Internet on some boots, requiring enable/disable driver to make it work. I have installed newest drivers from Realtek website but no effect.

2 - When the system goes to sleep, it wakes up with black screen and no way to get picture back except resetting the computer. I have tried to change my MB BIOS setup (I have the latest BIOS installed) to disable S3 and use only S1 mode but to no avail. Black screen awaits in every wake up. I have also experienced once the driver_power_state_failure error..

So, I see there are many posts about black screens and sleep modes but I haven't found the solution for Nforce3 motherboard AGP setups yet. Can anyone help or point to a solution?

A:Black screen when waking from sleep mode with legacy HW

I would expect that the system is not compatible with Win8.1 - especially as there are no nForce 3 drivers for it.

Hi, If your HDD has a guid partition table, the current OS will have to be installed in 'uefi' mode - the only way around this would be to reformat the drive with MBR and reinstall the OS using a boot option ( cdrom or flash drive ) that does not have a (uefi) suffix. Regards, DP-K

Hello CliffordJ. Microsoft Security Essentials is installed, correct? Many MSE users running Vista (but not all) suffered black screen after login following installation of Update for Microsoft Security Essentials - 4.9.218.0 (KB3140527), released about a month ago. In fact there is already a thread here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/606422/windows-vista-x64-bksod-after-login-or-no-access-in-normal-mode-suspect-mse/. The posters there disabled MSE 4.9 in Safe Mode by unticking a brand-new setting in the UI (Administrator > Turn on this app). Another method of escaping this situation would be to restore your system to a point before the update was installed, then hide the update in Windows Update. That would allow you to resume using MSE 4.8 if you wish.

I am extremely curious why this happens to many but not all MSE users running Vista. If more advanced forum members ask you for further information, I hope you will cooperate. Above all, I wonder if any other security software with real-time protection is installed (or perhaps improperly uninstalled)? Of course there is a possibility that your issue is something else...

Hello all
First time poster with problem after peforming sys restore on win7 pro 64bit.
Was troubleshooting a problem w/taskbar not staying hidden, tried to restore back 24hrs to when a java update occured. Restore seemed to proceed normally, but upon restart, it boots normally to just before the login screen would appear, then the screen goes black and all that is visible is the cursor , which I can still move.
But that's as far as it gets. Trying to boot in safe mode, or repair mode ends exact same way - can't boot in to try anything
Any ideas??

no one has any suggestions? I also triedtoboot to my win7 dvd to see if I could attempt to repair but again, it only gets thru the windows bootscreen then goes black with only the mouse cursor showing as before.

Hi, I am new here. First of all sorry for my bad English I know, maybe you heard this problem a lot but in my situation i couldn't fix this and it's driving me crazy. Here is my laptop specs: CPU Intel 4720HQ, Geforce GTX 960m 4GB, Ram 16GB, Display 4K, 1 TB HDD I bought this supercool (I really like it ) laptop about 9 month ago and everything were fine and great till now. About 3 weeks ago after a normal shutdown i noticed that when i star up my laptop, i have no screen and just black! I thought that it's a windows problem (my windows was so messy) and maybe it's time to do a clean installation again. I did it and installed the latest version of Win 10 (latest was 10 also) but my problem was there still! And the intersting part is, when i blindly restart windows (pushing Alt+F4 and one direction down and enter!) my screen comes back on restart! And yes, in Black Screen mode, when i plug an HDMI cable i have screen on external monitor but changin the screen mode (i mean double screen, extended and so, won't do anything!) I read every forums and every solution in last 3 weeks and nothing! I installed Win 8.1, i updated windows automaticly, i did clean installs many times, latest geforce drivers, latest Intel drives, disabled geforce from Bios, refreshed and updated Bios, disbaled Win10 fast boot and ect. I am really tired of this and just want to enjoy my beautiful laptop again  Anybody has a solution?!

When booting, windows 7 pc goes to black screen with mouse pointer. Same with every safe mode. Same with last known good configuration. Tried to get built-in repair to work, it tries, but fails. I did habe 3 system restore point before this issue, and when I try to choose that option, it says there are none! (When I had my last pc on xp, there was this disc called, "Roadstarter boot cd". I could use that to start ANY windows machine, no matter what was wrong. It was awesome. This cd is too old and doesn't support windows 7)

C0000218 Unknown Hard Error

When I restarted after the blue screen it went into a check disk but would not finish the scan.

A:Blue screen & now won't start in safe mode, screen goes black

I'm writing from my husband's laptop because my desktop is completely dead.

We were out of town for several days and when we returned my desktop was running very slow so I attempted to restart it. It locked up, I pressed/held the power button and when it restarted it attempted to run a disk check. The disk check locked up and I had to press/hold the power button again. When it restarted I got a blue screen ~ stop: C0000218 unknown hard error.

Sometimes when I attempt to restart it I get: checking file system on C:
file system = NTFS

When I attempt to restart it in safe mode, safe mode with networking or starting in last known good configuration I get . . .

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\windows\appPatch\drvmain.sdb
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\windows\system32\drivers\ . . . (various items)

Now it won't start, not even in safe mode. Everything I try ~ I just get a black screen.

** I just tried to restart AGAIN and it ran disk scan, said it had completed disk scan and would restart, the screen went black when it attempted to restart and the screen is still black and it won't restart.

What can I do to get my computer back?

Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Problem:
Black screen. No BIOS read-outs. Not possible to enter the BIOS menu. CPU fan, hard drive and other indicator lights up and works normally.

Synopsis:
PC starts normally at about every 30 attempts. In this case, the BIOS (F2) or Windows 7 starts normally. Observations suggest that PC will only start when it is completely cold, ie when it has been off for at least 2 hours between 2 start-up attempts. This time can be reduced to about 15 min, if cooling elements are placed on both sides of the motherboard (below the PC, and on top of the keyboard).

What has been studied / tried?
Power supply and connectors - ok.
Battery ok (though worn and should be replaced because it will no longer charge for max capacity).
CMOS battery holds 3V (although volt drops at loads > 5 mA).
Ram, HDD and CPU is tested / changed and found ok.
Motherboards (incl. Graphics chip) has been tested and found ok using various test programs from the official Lenovo Support.
Visual inspection of the motherboard: Nothing to report.
Heating the graphics chip using heat gun (in order to eliminate any cold solder joints) did not solve the problem.
Attempt installation of the latest original BIOS executable file from the Lenovo Support (only possible under Windows) fails:

A:Lenovo Z580 will not start - Black Screen [SOLVED]

I first want to say thank you for such an informative, detailed write-up.  Everything in the procedure worked for me, with no issues, until the (optional) step of "Download and install the latest original BIOS Lenovo Support." I downloaded the Z580 BIOS updater from Link A, released 8/13/2014. Upon attempting the installation of the first file, Public.exe, it appears to be successful, the computer reboots, and then is stuck gets stuck in an infinite boot loop asking to select the boot device. This has been detailed by other users, Link B. If you decide to attempt the Lenovo BIOS update and get stuck in this boot loop, try the following:When the boot device screen comes up, press tab to select Bios OptionsUnder Bios Options, scroll to the rightmost menu and change the boot type from UEFI to Legacy (Link B). This allows the PC to boot, but under a slow legacy debugging mode - things are NOT fixed at this point. Insert your bootable USB key, containing Flash.bat and then restart the computerWhen the computer boots, keep pressing F12 to choose the boot device, and move the USB key to the top of the listThe portable Windows 98 OS will then start from the USB key, and you can reinstall the BIOS from the "Flash.bat" file. Note, I did not have to reactivate Windows after this procedure.  System Specifications:Lenovo Z580, model 2151, manufactured 2012/05/24Core i5-3210M processor2x4 GB RAMIntel HD3000 graphicsWindows 7 home premium 64... My other half has a Lenovo H50 tower which only shows a blank black screen. It wouldn't boot past the Lenovo logo a few days ago. Tried the Windows Troubleshoot options, all without success. Tried OneKey Recovery, supposedly successful. Still wouldn't boot past the Lenovo logo. In between the troubleshoot options and OneKey, I also tried a live USB (Ubuntu), because of course there wasn't a recovery DVD and I was still hoping to retrieve some files. GNU Grub couldn't find the EFI file on the Lenovo but was fine on all other computers we tried. Blamed it on Linux and ordered Windows 7. Inserted DVD, computer wouldn't boot from DVD (selected from boot menu). Fine, changed the boot order to DVD first. Now I don't even see the Lenovo logo, it is just a black screen. I cannot get into the BIOS, which means I am not sure what my options are from here on. The H50 is only 15 months old, so if it is the hard drive, I'd be very disappointed. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I recently came home to my computer off and when I went to turn it back on, it started up with a black screen after the windows logo with just the cursor available. Things like ctrl-alt-delete did nothing so I tried booting up in safe mode which ended up with same black screen and cursor.

I then went to search the internet for possible fixes and have done/verified the following:

Used boot CD and ran Start-up repair, told me to remove any mp3 players or USB devices and try starting again, didn't work (nothing was connected in the first place). The start-up repair log appears to identify no problems with the system.

It's not a hardware issue, the drive itself has been checked on another computer and I've already used a new drive and installed a new copy of windows using the same computer.

Not a virus issue, scanned the drive for viruses and did a chkdsk on it, neither of which turned up anything.

Unfortunately there are no restore points saved so I can't just revert to an older profile.

Since I can access the drive on another computer, is there any program I could run to try and fix the problem? This seems to be the only thing that hasn't been covered in other topics similar to this one which I've found online.

This is my last resort so any help that you can provide will be greatly appreciated,
Thanks!

I had to buy a new (SSD) HD and had trouble booting from a disc until I enabled Legacy Mode and disabled Secure Boot in BIOS. Boot orders in both UEFI and Legacy are the same, with DVD Rom set to boot first. Also, the settings for IPV4 and IPV6 are set to IPV4 (Legacy) when they were once set to BOTH IPV4 AND 6 and are unable to be changed, if that's important. Now whenever I boot up I always get a "No Boot Device Found" message until I hit "Enter" at which point i'm allowed entry into my precious Win10 laptop.  I disabled Legacy in BIOS, but then i get a different "No Boot Device Found" error, and hitting "Enter" doesn't help. Could some kind person tell me how to correct this, and possibly why it happened and the differences in each option? I'll settle for how to correct this, though, with much gratitude.  MUCH gratitude. GN

Try resetting the bios once more. This time completely remove the power cord and press the power on button to clear any voltages left in the system, then clear the cmos/bios pulling the battery. Put the battery back in and reconnect the power and boot it.

I recently got a Lenovo Y50 a couple months ago. I've been taking very good care of it, checking for viruses nearly every day and cleaning out everything daily as well, because I need this one to last because it will be my PC for college. But yesterday I booted her up and it showed the lenovo logo, then nothing. Black screen. No cursor or anything on the screen. Keyboard LEDs are on and caps lock and things can turn on and off. I've tried to restart multiple times, restored the system to 4 days ago, taking it off the charger and putting it on, I just don't know what's wrong. I don't know if safe mode will help but I have no idea how to get there on windows 8 anyways. Please and thank you )-:

Hi guys, I've got a nasty virus on a laptop that I cna't get rid of (not yet anyway) I have not yet run HijackThis! or GMER, however I have run ComboFix, it found and deleated a file on the D drive called installer.exe. No changes. Here are the symptoms:

1) When booting into normal startup it takes about 5 minutes to get to the desktop. That is from the time I see the Windows Loading screen until the screen goes black.

2) Once I have officially logged in the screen is black. All I see is the mouse courser. Pressing ctrl alt del does nothing. Neither does pressing the Windows key.

3) Booting into safe mode brings up the desktop and the computer workes fine then.

4) All of the System Recovery files have been deleated.

5) Going to the Avast website brings up the "This site has been marked as harmful and is being blocked" screen.

6) If I make any changes to startup using the msconfig command and then restart the computer the system will hang on the Windows loading screen, restart, and then revert itself back to the way it was before (black screen)

7) I cant run a virus scan (or do anything else) in Avast (this isnt really the virus's fault, avast dosent work in safe mode.)

I'll post the logs of HijackThis! tonight, but I would like if anyone has any suggestions to help me out before then.

hi you should have a recovery partition this should help
Restore the PC to its original condition with the HP Recovery Manager if Windows Vista is not accessible
If the PC cannot launch into Windows, it may still be possible to use the HP Recovery Manager on the hard drive to restore the computer to its original operating condition by first pressing the Power button to start the PC, and then pressing the F11 key to start the HP Recovery Manager. NOTE: Depending on the BIOS version, your computer may display multiple prompts during startup including F11 to start System Recovery. Pressing the F11 key on a computer with an HP factory image will start System Recovery even if the prompt is not displayed

Hi

I have Windows Vista Home Basic running on a Dell Dimension PC.

I had some memory problems and kept putting off upgrading the RAM and backing up my details on the PC (its been a completely reliable performer for the last three years).

However, the other day it froze and after an hour of waiting I hit the power button and tried to boot the machine back up.

I was then prompted to run the system repair which doesn't seem to have helped. I tried to load Windows in Safemode, Safemode with Networking, Safemode with Command Prompt and Start Windows Normally. None of which seem to work. All I get is a black screen with the mouse cursor in the middle.

Like I said, some of the data is NOT backed up and I do need to keep hold of it.. What Can I do to back up my data and what can I do to get Vista back up and running? I know I could try a parallel installation, but I'm hopeless with technology.. Is it possible to remove the hard drive and place this into an enclosure with USB and plug it into a laptop to retrieve the data? How easy is this to do? If not, what are the chances of repairing Vista to run? And is there any reinstallation method that would keep hold of my data?

Thanks!

Mat

I've been wondering if it's possible to use the legacy (Windows 7 and earlier) BIOS instead of UEFI in Windows 8.1. In my BIOS settings, there is an option to enable the legacy boot mode, but Windows won't boot whenever this is enabled (I get the message 'Operating System not found' instead). Is there any way to enable this?

NOTE: I am not talking about secure boot; I already have that disabled.

Thanks in advance.

So I have a Lenovo Y580 Ideapad I bought circa 2013/14. I've kept it pretty updated and all since then. It had Windows 8 last time I was able to use it (a few months now sadly). Before this incident, it had already happened before but it would come back on after a few tries. One time it took a whole week of trying to turn it on and off and finally it just popped up again. But this previous time I accidently let it die (I always had it charging once this issue began because I was afraid it would die and do this) and it hasn't been able to boot. I've researched this issue and I've not been able to find one specific answer. So I decided to come here and have some seasoned techs look at my issue personally. I uploaded some videos on youtube in order for you all to get a look at it and what it does when I poke around at it. Also, Idk if it would be of any relevance, but before it died it had had a long standing issue of the touchpad not working. Occasionally it would twitch or work for a few minutes but it was mostly dead (the touchpad I mean). I was never able to fix it (also I just got lazy and bought a mouse). Here is video #1 so you get a basic idea of **bleep** it's doing: https://youtu.be/FwVumwp7MFAHere is video #2 of me poking around on it and doing the restart power thing (thass tha technical name right?) so you can see what it does and doesn't do:https://youtu.be/FwVumwp7MFAIf there is any more info I can give please let me know. Like the title says, my computer is stuck on a black screen. I downloaded an update and was instructed to restart the computer. After restarting the computer it went to a black screen. It won't do anything past that. I've tried starting it in safe mode but always with the same result. I have no idea what to do with this short of taking it to Best Buy to have the geek squad take a look at it and frankly I don't feel like doing that. If anyone knows how to fix this or has any suggestions, I'm open to anything. Please help.

A:Computer stuck on black screen - wont start in safe mode

Have you tried selecting Last Known Good Configuration from the Safe Mode menu? It sometimes works. Also, if you put in your W7 DVD and select Repair rather than Install after making the language choice, StartUp repair might help and if it does not, try System Restore.

I posted this on the malware thread, too, but I'm not sure if it goes there or here:

My husband got HDD Control malware on his computer (XP SP2) this morning and has spent all day trying to get it off. He used a suggestion in the forum of trying Superantispywear and it seemed to work. However, after about 20 min of being able to use his computer again, it started to randomly play bits of audio (again), but he did have control of the computer again. That wasn't OK. He updated the SuperAntispyware and tried to scan again. He was skype chatting to friends during the scan and he decided to close some windows. The computer slowed to a crawl and he had to restart.

Well, we did various things to try and get it started (safe mode, etc), but the main problem now is that he can't get past the login screen. It's black w/ the white arrow. That's it. Nothing else.

He can get it to boot in save mode, but that's about it.

He doesn't have a Windows CD (his computer didn't come w/ it) so he can't use window's application.

any help is desperately needed!

Thanks,

Kara

A:Help! Login screen is Black w/ white arrow and can't start except safe mode

Hi Kara,

I got this trojan today too, and it took me all evening to fix.

First I tried Avast but I got part way into its scan twice and my computer shut down. For a while it wouldn't let me do anything, not even open Chrome to go online, but after another shut down and restart, it allowed me to open Chrome. This time I did not touch or try to shut the fake warning pop up.

I went to Microsoft.com and downloaded Microsoft Security Essentials (free) and scanned my computer. It took a long time but it found the trojan and then deleted it. After restarting, everything seems back to normal, I just had to delete the HDD Control desktop icon.

Maybe if you keep rebooting it will eventually restart so that you can do something. Otherwise, I'd take it to a repair place and see if they can get it to restart for you and then use Microsoft Security Essentials.

Good luck

My Lenovo G505 laptop running Windows 8.1 gave me error messages that say:"EFI Network 0 for IPV6 boot failed.""EFI Network 0 for IPV4 boot failed.""Default Boot Device Missing or Boot Failed. Inset Recovery Media and Hit any key. Then Select 'Boot manager' to choose a new Boot Device or to Boot Recovery Media"Then it goes to the boot option menu and gives me a list of the two boot options:"EFI Network 0 for IPV4""EFI Network 0 for IPV6"with no option to select the HDD despite BIOS being able to detect it.I changed the boot mode to Legacy Support from UEFI, and this time on the boot option menu I got a choice to boot from the HDD or the ODD. When I chose to boot from the HDD I got another message saying "Check cable connection!" PXE-MOF: Exiting Intel PXE ROM."I tried to boot Ubuntu from a flash drive and from a CD, but I still got the same result as when I tried booting from the HDD.I think the problem is that my Laptop won't boot in legacy support, but when I use UEFI I only have the option of booting from the network. I have no idea how I could fix this, so any suggestions are appreciated.

hi MattQE,

Welcome to the Forums.

Just to verify, is the unit originally Windows 8 and this problem occured after you upgraded to Windows 8.1? Any changes that you made to the machine before the problem occured?

From the looks of it, this seems like a hardware failure but can you try the following:
1. Boot into the BIOS and set the following options (if applicable):

Security Tab:
Secure Boot = Disabled

Exit Tab:
OS Optimized Defaults = Other OS / Disabled

2. When done, press Fn+F10 to save and exti and observe.

Let me know how it goes.

Regards

Hello, three nights ago my PC started blinking and freezing every five seconds so I used a few programs like CCleaner and Spybot S&D as well as but they did not find anything I had a malware problem a year ago so I went to Majorgeeks.com site and tried their Windows XP cleaning procedure and Generic Malware removal procedures with programs such as about:Buster and HSremover.

I had also tried to uninstall and reinstall my Mcfee anti virus system (which wasn't picking up anything after repeated scans...) but that only seemed to make things worse I did manage to put Windows default firewall back up in normal mode dispite the freezing screen.

As I was doing all of this I was referred to the antimalware program FDfix through Pacman's process checking site (I am at my college library and forgot to bring the actually info today...) and so after the above procedures failed I had tried to use FDfix in safe mode as instructed by the site.

However, when I had rebooted my system for the final FD check my PC crashed and I had to boot up in safe mode which works fine.

I have attached the two RSIT logs as your preparation guide states any help as to what I should do is greatly appreciated.

Thank you for your time,

Hello community

I?m facing a problem that i can?t solve. I have windows 7, upgraded to windows 10....

I had "Avira" installed on my Acer, but the constant publicity made me uninstall it with revo uninstaller, in the end, when i reboot, i couldn?t enter in my BIOS, safe mode, or windows.

After reading numerous forums, i can?t seem to find a solution, the only thing i could fix was entering in the BIOS again, by removing the "BIOS battery" and plug it in again. After this, windows shows up again the load screen, he also shows the log in screen, but after the login screen i only get a Black Screen where i can only see the mouse pointer.

I also notice that if i press Ctrl+Alt+Del, i can get into task manager, i can also bring up command prompt running it through the task manager, but my desktop is completely dark/gone......

I also try to run explorer.exe from the task manager but nothing happens, i checked if any other instance of explorer was runnig but no luck, there isn?t any......

I also did a command in my cmd, "taskkill /f /im explorer.exe" that i read in a forum to reset explorer.exe, but in the end it only shows up an Error saying he can?t connect to the server.......

I also tried Hiren?s boot cd, but with so many options i don?t know what to choose, i only did a check disk (no errors found), a memory test (no errors found), i also run malwarebytes, it found 2 malware files in system32, but after i reboot to clean them, i... Read more
