Can't Access Internet, "low On Virtual Memory"

Q: Can't Access Internet, "low On Virtual Memory"

Hello, I have had 2 people come up to me at my part time job saying they cant access the internet because there computer says they are low on virtual memory, what does low on virtual [u]memory actually mean and what can be done about it.

Preferred Solution: Can't Access Internet, "low On Virtual Memory"

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Can't Access Internet, "low On Virtual Memory"

Basically, the Page File (Virtual Memory) is what your operating system uses when it runs low on RAM resources.virtual memorypagingThe minimum should be 1.5 times your memory size. The maximum should be, at least, three times your memory. If you continue to have problems, raise the maximum. Keep raising it until you no longer get the message. Then click the Set button.Or, the best solution, you could increase the amount of RAM your system has by buying more, since raeding the hard drive is much slower than RAM.That's how I solved my, low virtual memory, problem.

Hi All,
I have established a Virtual Wifi Miniport and would like to share my laptops internet via the Miniport. Whenever I connect my android phone with this access point, it works perfectly for a few minutes and then all of a sudden there is no internet on the phone. The phone remains connected to the laptop hotspot but the internet access is no more there. Now at this point if I disconnect the connection between my phone and the hotspot and then again try to reconnect back again, it wont even connect. The phone will keep on searching and shows connecting status but can never connect. I have tried all sorts of softwares connectify, virtual router, intel mywifi and even tried to create a hotspot from the cmd using netsh command. All the hotspots work in the exact same way intially works perfect but maybe after half an hour internet is gone. I have completed all the steps properly even changed the settings in the laptop adapter with interet access to allow other networks to connect but nothing seems to work. I have a Windows 7 Machine and my wireless adapter is Intel(R) Centrino(R) Wireless N-100 and the drivers are up to date according to windows. I know that its a problem with my laptop/OS or something because my android phone can connect and remain connected( without losing internet ) to the connectify hotspot in my wifi enabled desktop PC.I am breaking my head over this for the past 15 days even formatted my system once but no use. Please help if you can..please!

Hi, just thought I might ask the professional if they know of any issues concerning Virtual PC and access to the internet.

I've recently installed VPC on my computer and am running an XP client and Windows Server 2003 on two separate virtual hard disks.

The problem I'm having is, is that as soon as I run one, I can no longer access the internet on my host machine.

The real annoying part is that even if I exit and close the virtual operating systems and VPC altogether I still can't access the net.

I have unplug my router and modem, reconnect and restart my machine to be able to access.

Anyone know what may be causing the problem and a way around this?

A:Can't access the internet while running Virtual PC!

It may be that the virtual network adapters are interfering with the performance of the real network adapter. I sometimes have a similar problem in VM and I have to disable the virtual adapters to get it going again.

I've been trying to use connectify to use my laptop as a hotspot.
I have an ethernet connection that my laptop connects to and i want to connect my itouch to the internet via wifi.
I installed connectify and it worked just as it says it should, I can even connect my itouch.
But i never get the internet connection with the itouch.
I've checked and my Atheros wireless adapter is supported and everything seems like it should work, but for some reason it doesn't.

Please help. I have a hunch it's maybe a small little thing that's blocking the internet (possibly a windows sharing setting?).

After changing XP Mode's network adapter (in order to get port forwarding working), I found that I cannot access the internet using a browser anymore.

I went from Shared Network to Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller in the Virtual Machine settings, which broke its internet connection completely and gave the "limited or no internet connectivity" message. After going back to Shared Network, when loading any page in any of the virtual machine's browsers (Firefox, IE), the page would remain blank then time out after a while. However, pinging websites using cmd worked in the virtual machine. Using the 'repair' option in XP's Network Connections did not help. Disabling the firewall did not help either.

Also, the Windows 7 host machine's internet is working fine.

How do I fix this situation, without having to start anew with another virtual machine?

A:XP Mode virtual machine cannot access internet

If available, run system restore in XP using a point where Internet worked.

I just installed windows 8.1 pro on an MSI z97 pc mate motherboard with I5 3.3 ghz processor, 16 gb ddr3 1600 MHz ram, with embedded realtek pcie gbe NIC. I checked and found that hardware virtualization is enabled by default in the BIOS.

I tried to set up a virtual switch using the latest bios and drivers from MSI. I created a virtual switch choosing the external option and the share with host OS option. I then connected to the VM. No network connectivity on VM but host still worked.

I then used autopatcher to update windows 8.1 on the vm. I removed and reinstalled the virtual switch choosing external option and share with host OS option. Same conditions occurred.
And then I installed the latest NIC driver. Same problem - media disconnected.

I tried this process with the latest driver from the realtek website which was a couple years more up to date. I had such high hopes! Same problem.

I then used msconfig to prevent all non-Microsoft services from starting and rebooted. I removed and recreated the switch and I was still hoping for success. Same exact conditions occurred.

These are the conditions that occur whenever an external switch with host os sharing enabled is installed in between all of these troubleshooting steps. It looks exactly the same every time...

I've been experiencing sluggish performance, browsers were laggy and non responsive after having many tabs.

I found that the solution to improve performance was to change Virtual Memory values and disable "paging file size" for all drives.

Now the computer performance is amazing, everything responds properly but now I'm getting error messages of low memory and getting crashes. A few minutes ago the computer crashed to a black screeen.

Here are the values I have right now in Virtual Memory, what else should I do to stop these crashes? I already tried a few different values but the problem still persists.

Any suggestions?

I have purchased a Biostar M7NCG Motherboard 2 months ago which is running great. I have three available memory slots and have 2 sticks of 256 ddr 2700 crucial memory installed. I have just purchased an additional stick of kingston 256 ddr 2700. When I install the new stick in the available memory slot the computer boots fine but I have no internet access. When I pull the kingston out everything is fine.

I have been working on computers for over 2 years and have never come across anything like this. Thanks for any help.

Did you try reseating ALL of the Ram modules? Then reboot and see if the problem still occurs.

Also, try different variations amongst the three. Say, put A kingston and a crucial in, then boot and see if it works. Then put the other crucial and the kingston in.

My boy's desktop has a low memory warning problem that is a little different than some of the other threads I've read here.  He gets the warning when he plays SWTOR.  Task manager shows about 290 MB of memory in use during play with no leaking.  He has an SSD as the system drive with 140 GB free out of about 240 GB.  After going on the Microsoft boards, I tried to fix the problem by resetting the virtual memory settings to "automatically size paging file" and even a custom setting but the settings won't save following a restart and it always comes back saying that no virtual memory has been allocated.  The PC runs Win8 32 bit with a Core DUO E8400 and 4GB of RAM on the MB.  I'd be grateful for any suggestions/help.

6 months ago,i upgraded memory from the factory installed 64 to 256. It works, etc.

Is there any additional tweaking/ajustments i can do? i read something with virtual memory setting could be done for one thing.

A:After upgrading memory,its works,Virtual memory Tweaking Now?

Unless you have Win95 you likely donít want to go messing with your virtual memory. And even in that case it is the vcache you would be more interested in tweaking. Win98 and higher handles memory well.

If you watch your system monitor and are sure you arenít using your virtual memory you might do the ConservativeSwapfileUsage=1 INI tweak. Unless you are doing graphics, video editing or something RAM intensive you likely arenít using the virtual memory and the tweak wonít slow your computer. It doesnít speed it up, it just stops needless writes to the hard drive during idle time. Information if you want to do that: http://www.aumha.org/a/memmgmt.htm

Donít let anyone talk you into Cacheman or any of those Mem/RAM/Turbo/Boost type programs. They were written for Win95 and counterproductive in anything since.

" XP REQUIRES "backing storage" for EVERYTHING it keeps in RAM.
Virtual Memory is always in use.All processess gets virtual memory addresses
(a Virtual Address Space) no matter how much RAM is actually installed on the computer."

"Memory allocation in is a two-step process--virtual memory addresses are reserved first, and committed second...The reservation process is simply a way NT tells the Memory Manager to reserve a block of virtual memory pages to satisfy other memory requests by the process...There are many cases in which an application will want to reserve a large block of its address space for a particular purpose (keeping data in a contiguous block makes the data easy to manage) but might not want to use all of the space."

In other words, that virtual memory to which you refer,is only allocated memory, not necessarily
paged memory.

The thing you really want to know,is the actual pagefile usage.Use this programHERE

I am wondering what my computer should be set at for it's best performance as far as memory usage etc.? Do I set it so the system takes care of it or put in my own amounts? Thanks for your help and sorry if this is not in the proper forum!!

A:Memory Usage/Virtual Memory

Just let the system takes care of it. If you have enough physical memory, you really shouldn't need to worry about it. Virtual memory or Page file, is memory that uses your hard drive. When you have a app or apps that uses more memory than you physical have, the system will alocate space on the hard drive for "virtual memory" or Page File. This is when you notice performance lag on your computer, because the hard drive transfers data at a much slower rate than your memory.

If I choose to rais the amount of virtual memory the system uses does this meen that the computer will not show as much Physical Memory or not be able to utalize it?

A:Virtual Memory And Physical Memory

Virtual memory is actually not memory. It is simulated memory area on the HDD. When you are using a lot of virtual memory, your system will actually run slower. HDD access is considerably slower than RAM access. The OS will page memory out to the HDD to make more physical memory available to itself or applications, as needed.

I was running Outlook, AIM, and IE at the same. After a few moment, I'd get this following message:

Your system is low on virtual memory. Windows is increasing the size of your Virtual Memory Paging file. During this process, memory requests for some applications may be denied.

When I hit OK, all my applications would close, except my Outlook. I'm running Win2K with 512 memory. My computer is only 1.5 years old. I didn't play any games or download anything so it's not heavily used. But why the message then?

I ran Spybot, AdAware, and VirusScan just to see if I had any spyware or virus on my computer. None. I also checked the Processes in Task Manager and I didn't see any suspicious applications running. But I noticed that when I ran IE, the memory usage in Task Manager would keep going up (significantly) eventhough I didn't do anything in Explorer.

Can somebody tell me what the problem here? And perhaps a solution for it.
Thank you very much.

I do have a question?

We have a space in harddisk ,called virtual memory.  In addition to DRAM ,Operating System  uses this  virtual memory to store and run applications. Virtual memory makes up for the need of space required.

I think that the physical memory DRAM is not needed. Virtual memory inside the hard disk is  sufficient.

By avoiding DRAM we  can save the cost of  physical DRAM. We can also save lot of time that is involved in associating the pages between DRAM and Virtual memory.

Of course , virtual memory provided by the hard disk is slow. But  in current trends we can research , to increase the speed of magnetic drums being used by the harddisk to store data.

Thanks ,

virtual memory is hard drive space allocated by your computer for ram that is unavailable or for page swapping. Generally you do not worry about virtual memory. It is a system function. Generally it is set to automatic from windows. With windows XP, 512MB is the minimum to run an acceptably performing computer. 1gb is highly recommended. With Vista 1gb is the minimum, 2gb is recommended.

To all the fonts of all knowledge.
I have two questions which are simple ones but I cannot find or don't know where to start to look
Up until now we have supplied just software to our customer and now we are looking at providing the hardware as well as the support for said hardware.

1) The plan is that when we need to carry out any maintenance to the laptops, instead of me or one of my team jumping in a car/plane to the customers location to update the software (both windows and application), the customer connects the laptop to the
internet and dials into our Secure VPN so I can then RD into it to do all the work remotely. However the customer cannot have access to anything else in the outside world. I know it can be done as my wife's laptop cannot access the internet
but only through her company VPN. I want to do the same but not give the customer access to the internet at all just my external IP address so I can access it.
2) We will provide them with secure USB memory sticks to use but they can only use these ones, all others will be blocked. How do I do this?
Your thoughts will be very much appreciated

I've tried to disable virtual memory in XP (for speed amongst other things) by setting the page file to 0 for all drives in my system.

However, when I check the task manager it reports "VM Size" as at the same level or higher than "Mem Usage" for all process, e.g. firefox.exe Mem Usage 77,720K and VM Size 118,756K. This is a problem as my RAM (1Gb) seems to be filled up quite quickly because of the additional VM Size requirements - since I'm not using Virtual Memory, VM Size should be zero for all processes. Is this what it should do, or have I disabled Virtual Memory incorrectly? Thanks in advance.

Virtual memory is system memory that is simulated by the hard drive. When all the RAM is being used (for example if there are many programs open at the same time) the computer will swap data to the hard drive and back to give the impression that there is slightly more memory. To increase the Virtual Memory do the following:Right click My computerClick PropertiesClick the advanced tabClick Settings under performanceClick the advanced tab.Enter your intial size (which should be 150% of the actual physical RAM you got)Enter your Maximum size (which should be 3 times as big as your actualy physical RAM you got)Click setClick Ok. On each window. You may have to restart your computer

A:What should I set my virtual memory as?

With that amount of ram, allowing windows to handle it should be more than adequate.
Changing swapfile settings was a requirement of tuning on Win95 and early Win98 versions. And, on slower, smaller PCs.
The latest releases of Windows handles VM very well and with 512 installed, you are most likely using little of it to begin with, even if tweaking it could be a benefit.

Hello all,

I'm looking at using a larger flash drive for the ReadyBoost function and wondering what your thoughts are on it. At the moment I have about 4GB of a flash drive ready-boosted and I have noticed a slight increase in performance. Does it really only affect the paging file and such? I'm not very familiar with virtual memory. Could anyone shed some light on this for me?

A:Virtual Memory

With 4GB of RAM (if I read your specs correctly), Ready Boost has zero effect - it may be even negative because of the additional overhead. If you think you saw a performance improvement you bettter check again.
In fact your page file may never be used anyhow. You can check that in Resource Monitor > Memory tab. Look on the top (Hard Faults). If that row is zero, you have no page faults at all.

Hi everyone,

Now- I don't have a lot of stuff on my pc, and I have lots of free memory, but my pc keeps being slow, and I keep getting the ''virtual memory too low, windows increasing... bla bla'' message.

Yesterday I did 3 scans (anti virus, spybot and ad aware) and had 8 critical objects on my pc that I removed.

Recently I have removed some malware from my parents computer (My first post shouldn't be hard to find) and now their computer is showing "low virtual memory size. Windows is increasing the page file size" or something like that. I looked through here and google to find solutions. I have tried increasing the page file size. I have let windows manage the page file. Nothing seems to work. Right now it shows 1.4gb of page file being used and no programs are running (except avg free and its components which don't take up more then what seems like 50mb). The pc has 512mb of RAM and the initial size of the page file was 1.5 times that (recommended size by microsoft). Now its at least three times larger than the RAM. Should I replace the RAM or is there a problem somewhere? Usually I would fix this myself but something is just not right. I have some screenshots of the task manager processes windows and performance monitor.

Hey guys, I have a question. I'm a casual gamer and generally do not know too much about technical stuff, however I have pretty crappy performance in games, even with graphic settings being low, updated drivers, set to best performance, etc. (I mostly play League of Legends and WoW, reason being I can't play other stuff without horrible FPS)

I have an Nvidia 9400 GT card, but my computer is 2.2 GHz and 1 GB of RAM only.

I know I know, my RAM sucks. Also I have two drives in My Computer, C and D. C is the one where my windows is at, and all other little programs except games, like Firefox. It is also the smaller drive (24 Gigs with 9 Gigs free) while Drive D is where I keep all my games and it is 87 Gigs with 35 Gigs free. Well, I read something earlier about Virtual Memory, and stuff. Any way I can use that to improve my performance? Also, I read you can move it, should I try to move it to Drive D since there's more space, since Drive C is almost full just filled with basic stuff? How would I even do that? And how do I know it's not already set to Drive D? >.< Also how much should I allocate it if I should even touch that, lol.

Thank you very much in advance, appreciate it. Halp! D:

A:Virtual Memory help?

By default the pagefile will be placed on the same drive as Windows. It is possible to move it to a different drive and this can improve performance. However, this can only help if C: and D: are separate physical drives, not partitions. If they are partitions, as I expect is the case here, this will actually impair performance.

Pagefile configuration is done from the System applet in Control Panel.

My standard advice concerning pagefile configuration:

Unless you have a specific need, and you understand what you are doing, pagefile configuration should be left on System Managed, the default setting. Uninformed changes are far more likely to cause problems than improve performance.

My view is that if you don't know where a system setting is you shouldn't be changing it. Even if you do, it is almost always best to leave it alone.

Note that there is a vast amount of misinformation on the Internet concerning the pagefile. Most articles are written by people who have serious misconceptions about what the pagefile is and how it is used.

For gaming you need more than 1 GB RAM. As I am not a gamer I will not comment on the video card.

It's only saying you need to enlarge your paging file/s. Go to Control panel/System/Advanced/Performance, and increase each hd's paging file.

Appoligies if this is the wrong space for this to be.
Ok, im usually good at computers but theres this one problem i cant fix, i just wondered if anyone knew what is was. I am using Windows XP, and my computer whenever it feels like it keeps freezing, i.e. mouse dont more keyboard and screen lock and the only way is to push the reboot button. If i was to guess i think its to do with my amount of RAM 256mb, and somthing to do with the virtual memory causing it do just freeze. My first answer to this was to get more RAM, or does it sound like somthing diffrent to you?
Thank in advance

I'm thoroughly confused at this point having just ordered 2 ea 2GB memory sticks to replace the 2x1 sticks currently in the Thinkpad T61.

In determining if the OS + machine can address this amount of memory (I hadn't thought this was a problem when I ordered the memory this morning but now I'm not sure) I don't understand if it's a no brainer that 4GB is addressable or whether something called machine enabled DEP is necessary to address this memory?

A:4GB virtual memory?

Windows 32 bit can address 4 gig of ram with no other settings. (DEP is something else entirely).

However, some amount of that will be eaten up by hardware requirements. Sometimes a LOT like 0.8 meg or so. So expect to have only about 3.2 to 3.5 meg available totoal if you are using Win 7 32 bit.

If using 64 bit and the computer is not too old then it should all be available minus a few k...

Virtual memory is space from your hard disk allocated by windows to be used in a similar way as RAM. You can't "upgrade" this memory! What you can do is to check if it is enough. Does your hard disk have enough free space? If not the best thing to do will be to free some space.
Virtual memory is usually 1.5xRAM size. So you must have at least this amount of space free. Let's assume that you have 512 MBs of RAM. You should free space equal to 768MBs (512x1.5) and so on.

Also check if virtual memory settings are altered in any unusual way. Right click on my computer/properties/advanced/under performance field click settings/advanced and look in the lower field. By clicking change you can alter virtual memory's size if something is wrong.

Adding more RAM or a bigger disk will help your PC's performance. Please post back with more details regarding the parts of your machine (RAM and HDD sizes) if you don't manage to solve your problem by reading my post.
