Hangs during backup creation

Q: Hangs during backup creation

Hello,I am preparing to install a new HDD. I plan to connect the old drive using a USB drive cradle and boot a recovery disc to resore my system (Win7HP) to the new drive. The old drive is <half full, so I decided to create a system image in a new partition, To ensure there would be enough space, I shrunk the OS partion with +100 MB to spare. I used Windows Backup and Restore to create a system image, allowed it to run overnight, but it never completed - progress bar hung at about 95% after a half hour. The partition is about half full, with no error messages after forced restart. I then attempted to create a recovery disc with the same result - hung at about 95% progress. I checked the disc defragmenter schedule, and it seems to have completed last night. What's wrong?

Preferred Solution: Hangs during backup creation

I recommend trying the free service from Zip Cloud. It's currently our users' favorite backup and storage solution and will save you headaches down the line.

You can get it direct from this link http://goo.gl/rFYDxc. (This link will open the Zip Cloud homepage.)

A: Hangs during backup creation

I think I have an old version of RnR on an even older ThinkCentre. I noticed that the window shows the Backup has completed at 100% yes, it's also very slow - 14 hours for 500MB) so I checked the box that will turn off the machine when it's done so I would be reasonable sure it completed. I also have to remember to close all programs, including start-up ones. I didn't turn off my anti-virus, which is Norton. As soon as I exited Dropbox, it seemed to perkup again. Since I didn't watch it finish, I don't know if those other checks showed that the final parts of the process were complete. There was a big asterick by the file copy step last time I looked.

Hello all, I'm going crazy here. I am trying to make a ghost boot disk using ghost boot wizard. It formats the floppy ok but when it starts to put files onto the floppy it hangs and won't respond to anything unless I power off. I tried different floppies, all with same results. I've tried formating a regular boot disk in command prompt, same thing, it hangs. It reads floppies just fine and I even transfered data files to a temp folder on my drive and that worked just fine. It hangs only when writing to a floppy.

I've used Ghost for awhile now and never had a problem until recently I tried to restore a partition on a second drive and could not used the ghost boot disk I've been using all along - disk contains no volume........

I recently installed ad-aware 6, could this be the culprit?

I'm using Ghost 2002 on 500MHz PIII (512MB) running WinXP Pro

Any help or suggestions welcome.

I'm new to this forum because of the issue I'm having.  (Hello all )  The harddrive is dead on this system and I attempted to install another used one which is about 2 years old but, is still good (500GB).  I used EaseUS and deleted the partion and created a new one.  Win 7 is the original opsys on it but I did get the free Win 10 upgrade about 2 years ago.  So, using my USB drive with Media Creation Tool, I attempted to load clean boot of Windows 10. They system boots, shows the Windows logo and that is as far as it goes. No spining wheel, just the logo.  The longest I waited was 15 minutes and nothing. Thinking maybe the drive was bad, I removed it and put a brand spanking new 1TB inside and got the same results. The USB drive with Media Creation is fine because I used it on my laptop and it booted and went to install window with no problem.  It also worke don my desktop. I used a SATA bring to hookup the old drive to my laptop and Windows saw it and assigned drive letter E. I have no idea where to go from here but would appreciate any suggest suggestions that will work.     This is how it haltsThis is the system info

I hope this is in the correct section - apologies if it isn't.

I have a new PC with Vista Home Premium x64 and I would like to make reinstallation or recovery disks. The machine has a program to create recovery disks but that fails each time - the DVD writer is working OK as I have made a few other disks. I should really return it I suppose but I would rather avoid the hassle - the PC itself is working fine and I have moved my stuff over from my old machine.

From reading the tutorials here I understand I can't make a complete backup image as its not the Ultimate/Business version.

Therefore does anyone have a suggestion for a backup and recovery tool ? I am downloading the x64 recovery CD image as I tap - the one which works with the OEM partition but I wondered about a complete "wipe" tool.

Ghost seems an obvious one but from reading posts elsewhere some people have had problems with Vista 64. I have downloaded the free version of HDclone but that doesn't support the disk type - I need the pro edition for that.

To get going I have made a complete drive image with CloneZilla to an external USB drive but obviously I will only get to test this when it all goes mamaries skyward, has anyone restored from this ?

A:Backup Image Creation

Hi Morph,

There is a program - the free version of which is excellent and may be what you want.

You can create compressed images of your partition/ drive and store it on another partition or even recordable dvd's.

The program can make a small version of itself on a bootable cd.

If you need to restore that way, boot in from the cd - it loads itself into memory - remove the cd and put in your dvd containing the image - the program will restore it to the drive.

You may want to make another image every now and again so it's not out of date - the program even lets you schedule that if you want.

It's very small and fast - best of all the free one will probably be all you need.

It's called Macrium Reflect and you can get it from here

Macrium Reflect Free Edition 4.2 build 2033 - Downloads - ZDNet Australia
The installer has both 32 and 64 bit versions and will automatically install the correct one .

Hope it helps

It seems a bit ridiculous to write about the subject. (soon I can say year after year)
Microsoft is very well aware of this - and other related problems. Yet - no correction.
Be it MS or Nokia, I give them all they deserve, here we go:

I had this problem (error code 0x8078012D) with backup and system image creation with Windows 7 Professional.

Hardware: HP HDX1000-EO, backup to WD 1 TB usb HDD (NTFS).

There were some writings on various forums, but nothing seemed to help. The same error kept on popping up no matter what I tried.

I did the following things:

1 - Made a clean Windows 7 Professional install.
After this the same problem continued.

2 - Made sure that all windows services were started automatically
VSS, COM+ etc.
This did not help.

3 - Did CHDSK /r
Nothing found.

4 - Disabled Norton 360, Advanced System Care Pro and Ad-Aware
This did not help.

5 - Disconnected all connections that could interfere with the backup.
Other usb's, my net connection, I even unplugged my headphones.
No success.

6 - Tried to do the backup manually.
This worked to a certain degree. Most data files were backed up, but still no system image.
The same idiot code kept on popping up: 0x8078012D.

7 - I gave up
This helped. I simply downloaded a free 3rd party software to create the backup and system image.

I still have to see if I am able to recover anything with this free software, if (read: when) my highly praised Windows 7 crashes again.

A:Backup and system image creation do not work

Hmm... If I am following you correctly, you're trying to create an Image of your drive using a built in tool with Windows 7, but yet its spitting out an error each time? Well, there are many great disk imaging programs, both commercial and open source, that have a proven track record.

There is an excellent discussion here: System Imaging as Additional Protection

The commercial solutions are, at least right now, more towards the beginning of the thread. The open source solutions are near the end.

Hope that helps.

Not too sure about your immediate problem there. But when I started doing backups here, I found that NTBackup was severely lacking...
I would suggest trying another type of backup software, we've got Veritas Backup Exec here, which has worked REAL good for me. You can download a trial version of it for a while, to get an idea of what you really want to work with.

I'm wortking on a dell inspiron 1720 laptop. Trying to do a full backup, using any backup sofware, the system will hang at about the 40-50% spot. I tried several different programs, Acronis 2010, Easeus To_Do 2 and some others. All reaxc in the same way. After forcing it to shut down and restart, I will sometimes get a chkdsk but it seems to find nothing.

Also tried running chkdsk manually, same result. Alternately, I ran the machine diagnostics from the bios and still nothing. The owner of the machine has not done backups so the ony one he has is 2 years old.

Any ideas?? I really hate to have to start over.

Win XP SP3 Pro ENG (With Dutch interface pack).

There were some small 'utilities' installed. Nothing fancy, but I couldn't apply a background image any-more (also see: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20111103095823AAstxSt - Unable to Change Desktop Background After Virus Attack?).

No traces of virii are left any-more, even the background works just fine again. Verified with: Panda Cloud antivirus, Free PC Tools Spyware Doctor, Malware Byte's Anti-Malware, Kaspersky IS 2012, Superantispyware and the logfile of The Avenger Version 2.0 all say the system is clean too!

BUT throughout troubleshooting, Combofix always reacted in the same way on this computer: it will not show any more new messages after the notice that it will start scanning, and that this might take 10 minutes or more.

Hard disk becomes silent, no action there. The XP system will become either very sluggish OR seems to react just fine. BUT starting programs, ending programs, starting task manager - it ALWAYS fails once combofix enters the scanning state... :s

Also, when I start Combofix, it kills explorer with a send error report dialogue.

There are no logs created, but I do have a C:\Combofix (which redirects to My Computer).

Any suggestions for what it is I can do next?

Thank you :)

A:Combofix just 'hangs' after registry backup when it starts the malware scan

Aaahhh...we have a Latin scholar , I knew that studying it would pay off some day .Sorry, but ComboFix is a malware tool...as such, it is not a point of discussion or use in this forum, which is oriented for XP system issues.ComboFix usage, Questions, Help - Look here - http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic273628.html I will move this to a forum where someone may be able to attempt to assist you.I will add a note about programs like System Mechanic:Bleeping Computer DOES NOT recommend the use of registry cleaners/optimizers for several reasons: Registry cleaners are extremely powerful applications that can damage the registry by using aggressive cleaning routines and cause your computer to become unbootable.

The Windows registry is a central repository (database) for storing configuration data, user settings and machine-dependent settings, and options for the operating system. It contains information and settings for all hardware, software, users, and preferences. Whenever a user makes changes to settings, file associations, system policies, or installed software, the changes are reflected and stored in this repository. The registry is a crucial component because it is where Windows "remembers" all this information, how it works together, how Windows boots the system and what files it uses when it does. The registry is also a vulnerable subsystem, in that relatively small changes done incorrectly can render the system inoperable. For a more detailed expl... Read more

I need to wipe and reinstall Windows 8.1 because the administrator password has been lost, no password recovery disk is available and as the machine now only logs into the Guest account and you cant run the Dell Recovery and Restore from a Guest account without logging in as an admin
We have no data that needs backing up as the machine is being assigned to a new person in the company and we don't need any installed programs so we purchased the Dell OS recovery and restore USB for the machine in the belief that this would allow us to restore back to day one.
I was informed that the version of Windows that will be restored is 8.0 and then require upgrading again after... not a problem
Unfortunately the recovery process insists on running a data backup so it can be restored later ...
- If I shutdown the PC when logged in as Guest before running the USB OS recovery, when it gets to the Initialise Backup and Migration it goes to the desktop and does nothing
- If I log out of Guest before shutting down it sits in at the USB OS recovery screen with "Initialise Backup and Migration" "Please Wait" and the rotating processing icon

Vista Business (32bit). Complete PC Backup to External (USB 2.0) DVD-Rw Drive (Lite-On DVDRW SHW-160P6S with latest driver installed) just "hangs" (ie. Tried this with non-formatted and formatted "blank" DVD-R disks - same "hang". Have to just "Stop Backup" program to get out of this.
PC's internal "D:" drive is DVD read/CD read/write drive.
Is DVD disk type (DVD-R) a factor ? Is there a fix for this other than replacing the
internal "D:" drive with one that writes DVDs or getting some other "complete PC backup" software ? Incidentally, the PC BIOS has been updated.

There are many reported problems with the built in Vista backup program. It works for most people but can be problematical, particularly with DVD's. A better and cleaner alternative if you can afford it is to use Acronis. The Backup in Vista seems to work better when saving the image to a hard drive or USB. However I have been let down on occasion by a restore from backup not working. That's why I switched to Acronis

Good Morning;

New PC running Vista Premium with Explorer 7 Hangs-up/freezes on a regular basis. Specifically going from url to url, page/site will begin to load, blue completion bar at the bottom of the page/toolbar begins to fill and the cursor (blue circluar) turns but page never completes loading. I can wait for hour and nothing happens. When I go to Task Mgr (Ctrl/Alt/Del) it indicates "...program not responding...". Eventually I'll close the program down thru Task Mgr and logon again to the Internet.

I've tried to isolate whether the problem is Explorer 7 or Vista itself as both according to most search engine inquiries are vulnerable to this problem. I have used sfc /scannow to verify Vista files are NOT corrupt and a literal laundry list of alleged fixes for Explorer 7 including doing a "RESET" but the thing persists on hanging- (BTW, ran 4 different virus/malware scans and all came-up clean, so the problem doesn't appear to be virus/security related)-

Does anyone have a remedy as it appears to be a major characteristic with both Vista and Explorer 7 with a lot of fixes- I just haven't been able to find one that works!

Many thanks in advance-

I'm currently trying to fix a laptop that no longer starts up Windows successfully. Letting it normally start up it hangs during startup (left for hours and it goes nowhere). Trying to boot into safe mode, it stops at crcdisk.sys completely. This problem first started when the person using the laptop suddenly had it freeze on them and decided to hard reboot it.

Now, I've tried booting Puppy Linux to access the hard drive and see if I can go about any of the recommended solutions that I've found (deleting possible problem system files) but the laptop just won't boot from CD. I can verify that the Puppy Linux CD works flawlessly but the laptop simply won't boot from it. I'm afraid it has something to do a bad CD/DVD drive (it's an older Sony Vaio and quite a few from what I can find have had similar problems with bad CD/DVD drives) so I'm really at a loss for what to do. The drive has been extremely temperamental in the past, randomly not reading or writing CDs but now it seems like it doesn't function at all. Sometimes it'll sound like it's spinning up the CD to read it but it doesn't load anything and sometimes it doesn't even bother spinning up the CD at all.

Also, I don't have the Windows Vista install CD for it otherwise I'd try that (even though it just as likely probably wouldn't work it seems if the drive is bad) and I don't know if there's some way to access a built in repair fu... Read more

I have been struggling with this issue for a few days now.

There are 2 major problems:

1. Start menu hangs when I click on it. I have to manually bring up the Task Manager and kill explorer and start it as a new task. This happens only in Normal mode and not in Safe Mode.

2. Machine hangs after I try to Shutdown or Hibernate in Normal mode. It does say logging of and seems to go through the normal shutdown but at the very end if hangs on blank/black screen and never actually shuts down unless I hold down the power button. This does not happen in Safe Mode.

What I am working with:

Thinkpad T43 laptop
Windows XP SP2

What I have tried:

- I used msconfig to turn off all services and startup programs and still no luck.
- Ran several Spyware programs and anti-virus programs, got rid of anything suspicious and nothing.
- Ran HIjackthis and got rid of anything suspicious.

The problems started after I cleaned up some spyware from my machine using CleanUp! and some other programs. I also took several services and startup items out of msconfig.
Everything else seems to work ok, like clicking on stuff on the desktop or the quick launch bar, browsing the internet, chat, bring up explorer by clicking on an icon and navigating through the hard drive. I just can't click on the Start Menu in Normal mode.

My hunch is the following:

1. Some service that is imperative to the start menu and/or explorer hangs either because it being run under 'Local User' as op... Read more

So I have been having this problem for a few weeks now, the issue seems to come and go happening often sometimes and sometimes not at all for days. The computer will hang usually while gaming sometimes while at rest. I can move the mouse around and if I am logged into Ventrillo can still communicate over it. Ctrl+Alt+Del doesn't bring up task manager. I notice the hd light seems to be churning and then stays constant until I manually restart. If the manual restart works and it boots to Windows then the network card is usually off for some reason no lights at all and I have to disable/enable the local area connection one or two times to get it going again...strange? Then after restart sometimes the computer hangs at XP loading screen indefinitely or gives me a BSOD. And most recently it has been hanging before POST, or telling me to insert a bootable device. I am guessing this could be hdd issues, or RAM? I know some troubleshooting steps I could do just dont know what order I should prioritize those steps. So all kinds of stuff going down I really can't pinpoint what to do first. There are no unknown devices in the device manager. Updated drivers to the best of my knowledge.

Hi All,

OK, first I am not sure if I am still infected, but the computer is still not acting right and considering everything I don't trust it .

Running Win Xp / MCE Version 2002 SP 2

I run NIS 2008, last full scan was 3/31/09, and last update was 4/1/09. Run NIS religiously, always keep subscription/updates up to date.

Ran MBAM 4/2/2009 DB 1939 - now clean

Here is the scenario.

On 4/1 Firefox began crashing erratically. I did the update for 3.0.8
When I restarted Firefox I could not get an Internet connection, even though IE7 connected fine.
I did a system reboot, at that time decided to go forward with Microsoft update to SP3 (I never reboot my computer, usually leave it running and just hibernate).
AFter that, system would load, prompt for user/pass but then just go to wallpaper, nothing else.
System would just hang there, did several reboot attempts.

System would give black screen on Safe Mode, would still hang with Wallpaper on "Last Known Configuration".
AFter that used MSCONFIG to get system running with wireless connection. At that point noticed several things:
*Google in Firefox and IE would redirect search results randomly to different pages
*Explorer.exe even though not technically running, was eating a LOT of memory, I am talking 350K+ and up,
Tried to run DDS.scr, just blipped the Dos prompt and disappeared. Would not run.
Uninstalled MS SP 3.
Got system up and running on Safe Mode with ... Read more

1. Frequently my system will not shutdown all the way. "System shutting down" never finishes, will stay there all night.
2. Sometimes on boot up, my system doesn't make it all the way to LOGIN. After a couple of attempts to reboot it usually makes it past the login and I can operate for a while. Eventually something hangs and I have to reboot. Windows Explorer is a frequent program to hang up. In Task Manager, its Application tab status indicates 'not responding.' Once explorer hangs up then other programs quit responding. On occasion, I have held the mouse key down over the 'x' button to close a window. After a while, but not always, a program will shut down that way. Generally, though something else is hung up and I still have to reboot.
3. I use Avira AntiVir, MalwareBytes Anti-Malware, TuneUp Utilities. I have tried to use CCleaner recently, but it hangs up everytime I use it. It runs for differing amounts of time. When it hangs I can't kill it in Task Manager.

A:Shutdown Hangs, Explorer Hangs,

Are you getting any error messages? Crashes (BSOD), unexpected shutdowns, sudden freezing, random restarting, and booting problems could be symptomatic of a variety of things to include hardware/software issues, overheating caused by a failed processor fan, bad memory (RAM), failing or underpowered power supply, CPU overheating, motherboard, video card, faulty or unsigned device drivers, CMOS battery going bad, BIOS and firmware problems, dirty hardware components, programs hanging or unresponsive in the background, and sometimes malware. If the computer is overheating, it usually begins to shutdown/restart on a more regular basis. If you are not finding any malware and there are no obvious signs of infection, then you may need to do some troubleshooting.XP Shutdown & Restart TroubleshootingTroubleshoot shutdown problems in Windows XPXP Shut Down and Automatic Reboot ProblemsTroubleshooting Windows Shutdown ProblemsWindows stops responding during Windows XP shut downTroubleshooting Windows ExplorerThe Explorer.exe process stops responding (hangs)How to Restart Windows Explorer Without Rebooting Computer When It Is UnresponsiveAnother thing to try is download and install the User Profile Hive Cleanup Service which helps to ensure user sessions are completely terminated when a user logs off. A:Jpg vcd creation

Found this:

just search for jpg.

Ah, here's something.

Use something like BBMPEG and the list option and define the number of
frames to last 25 x the number of seconds you want them to be on screen.
Resize them to 720 x 576 first and output to MPEG2 for best quality.

Resize them to 352 x 288 for MPEG1 or VCD

These settings are for PAL.Click to expand...

I burned a DVD of "Motivational Posters" and some music. It burned correctly and it loads in everything.

The problem is that my DVD player sucks. It only plays the pictures and I can't find any way to play the music at all.

So my question is:

Is there a way I can set up a DVD menu type thing to open up the music folder by folder?

I meant on the same disk. It's a DVD+R. Or am I going to have to make a new disk? and If I were to make a new disk what free software could I use for MP3's? Burner XP is what I used, and Xilisoft's DVD Creator only allows me to work with Videos.

A:DvD Creation

The only option for a DVD to play music if it does not support mp3's, is to encode the music into a dvd Movie with either a blank video track or even some of the poster images you have used. Most DVD players do support file browsing for mp3 so try messing around with the menus when you have the disc inserted.

Hope this helps!

is there any software to make dvd menus and such?

basically i just want to create a private dvd for myself so I can make databases and images and video clips organized in menus and such.

Any software to do that? And is there any software that can export a database into something presentable? (Like does microsoft have any software that syncs like that?)

I guess the most important thing is having presentable pages like frames where I click on a menu on the left and it opens on the right.

THanks for any help.

A:dvd creation software?

Well there is a wide choice.

If your looking to make simple data disk, Try BurnAware Free Edition http://www.snapfiles.com/get/burnaware.html

or DeepBurner

For DVDs with videos you can play on a DVD player, If you have Vista you can use Windows DVD maker, you'll find it built in.

But what you want i think is something more interactive, Normally you would make a powerpoint presentation, but if you want it on a DVD, im not sure.
You could try Nero http://www.nero.com/eng/nero8-introduction.html

I bought a new computer with Windows 7 and Word 2010 and had all my documents transferred from my old XP PC. Now in Library/documents the "Arrange by" choice is only "date modified" which for all existing documents was October 5, 2012--i.e., the date of the data transfer. How can I get the documents to be listed by date created ?

A:creation date

Go to My Documents folder, not library. Right click on top bar and checkmark Date Created. Then click on that header to sort by Date Created.

I am having a time and a half trying to create recovery DVD's. I keep getting the error message that "this computer does not have a drive capable of creating cds and dvds". I definitely have a dvd burner so I know that's not the actual problem. From the research I've done, I think I may have uninstalled some DVD softward that was pre-installed on my Windows Vista HP Pavilion TX2110us laptop. Does anyone know how to fix this problem. I desparately need to re-install Windows and I don't really want to do it without having the created recovery dvds.

Hi all.
I'm interested in creating a DVD (or series of DVD's) containing multimedia pub quizes. Different rounds of questions on various subjects, some written, picture, music and video rounds that can be played on any DVD player preferably but on a laptop at least. It would be good to be able to (for example) play the intro to a track and ask them to name it then play the same thing again (from the same screen) and have it carry on further into the track come answer time.
Does anyone know of any frontend software that would be good for this? Something written specifically for the task would obviously be best but anything that could do the job and has good online support and tutorials comes a close second.
Thanks in advance

Hello all. I have a miniDV camcorder. It is probably 3 or 4 years old. It's a Sony. I just got a firewire cable for it and recoreded christmas. I would like to put it onto my computer and create a DVD from it. I was wondering if any of your pros could tell me what a good but fairly simplistic program to do that would be?

I have used the software that came with it in the past (a long time ago). I cannot remember what came with it, nor do I have the software so I will ahve to buy more. Because I've used it though, I have a slight knowledge of getting the video off from the cam onto my computer. I jusr want something that will make it easy for me to create a DVD from that. Any idea? A program that does both would be most ideal I believe. Any and all suggestions are welcomed. Thank you!!!
