I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello,

I have a strange intermittent problem with internet shortcuts icon that is the icon for the shortcut to a URL say for Microsoft.com (not a page with its own custom icon). I right click on the page select create a Shortcut (which is place on desktop) when I look on the Desktop there is a shortcut icon but it is just a blank page it doesn’t look like the default IE shortcut.

I have to right click on the shortcut and select the web document tab which has the ‘change icon’ button’ and select ‘change icon’ and it already says I have the correct icon. As highlighted in this ‘change icon’ area. It indicates which indicates which icon I am currently using here. Oddly it indicates in the window that I am using the correct icon. This window is on the change icon page at bottom. ”Select an Icon from the list below:” (the Default IE icon is highlighted with a red asterisk next to it) this is where it shows me what icon I am currently using. It just doesn’t come out looking like that for some reason. It sometimes comes out looking blank white missing the ‘e’.

When I just back my way out by clicking ok on then I press apply (which is highlighted) on the web documents tab. I don’t actually make any changes as I said because it indicates I am using the correct icon I just view it and ok on the way out. This some how changes the icon to normal from that blank white page without the little default ‘e’ on it to one that does (default).

The shortcut itself works fine i... Read more

Don't know if this applies but with IE if I rename (to shorten, hence fit more in the links bar) the official favicons now change to generic IE ones. I have been trying to change the default shortcut icon for IE. I have one I would like to use that is not just a page with an e. I would like to click a webpage > create shortcut and my icon will be there.

I went into HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT and changed a bunch of the DefaultIcon to my icon path. C:\Windows\Ico\online.ico

Some changed, but not not all. Some of the icons that did not change, I changed by hand and some go back to the default icon after I open the page.

I would like to replace the top one with the bottom icon.

Can anyone help me on this?

Hello,
I've been trying to find a way to change the default icon size in Windows 7. My machine defaults to 'small' icon size, but I prefer the 'large' one, in just about every case. Instead of needing to manually change the size for each individual folder, is there a way I can set 'large' to be the default for all folders? I couldn't find anything in the control panel and haven't been able to find a post about setting a default size in the other forum posts yet.

ok, so ive set a new icon for default folders, ex: when i make a new folder, it has my custom icon, however, whenever i put files into any new folder that i create, it reverts back to the yellow one. the only solution that works is enabling always show icons, never thumbnails, however, that is not the option i want. before i reinstalled windows, it was working the way i wanted (where my default icon is one of mine, not system, and i was still able to see thumbnails bc i didnt need the always show icons option enabled). anyways, now when i make a new folder it does have my icon, but whenever i add something to that folder, it reverts back. i want it to stay the custom icon i set, and still be able to see the thumbnails inside of it. it was this way before but i cant remember how to fix it. helpp please

When you double click on an undefined file type and then select a default program, Windows automatically creates an icon from the program on top of the default "blank" shell icon from shell32.dll.

My question is: What if I want to have another icon on top of the "blank" instead?

Note that I'm not trying to replace any of the default shell32 icons, but just replacing the icon embedded on top of the blank slate.

I think you can do this in Explorer, tools, folder options, file types, by selecting (hilighting) the 'new' type and then clicking advanced and then change icon.

Until very recently any shortcut to a website that I create on my desktop automatically takes on my default browser's icon. (Currently Firefox.) But all of a sudden the icons for websites that have an RSS option in them have reverted to some standard boring icon that has nothing to do with the browser nor with rss feeds. (It's definitely not the orange rss icon; it's just some standard boring default icon, like a document page with a folded corner with a square and some colored dots in it.)

So, out of all the links to websites that sit on my desktop, just the ones that point to websites with an option to subscribe to an rss feed have reverted to a common icon picture. Everything other link still has the Firefox symbol. And any new shortcut I create has the same pattern; if there's no rss feed option in that website, the shortcut icon will match the browser's icon. But if there's an rss option the icon will be a plain looking standard icon.

My OS is Vista Ultimate. Any ideas? I can't seem to find this issue anywhere in the forums I've visited. (Or else I just don't know how to phrase it correctly.)

A:Default browser icon lost in desktop shortcut to websites when rss option present

Okay, now I'm not so sure it's strictly related to sites that offer RSS. I played with it some more and some new shortcuts I create (to some of the same sites) take on the browser icon, while others keep defaulting to that boring white icon. I can't determine a consistent pattern. I just know it wasn't happening before!
If anyone has any ideas, thanks in advance!

I accidentally shift+deleted the standard "Videos" folder that has an icon. I used a utility to recover the little bit of data that was on there, so that's all good. The problem is that now there is no "Videos" folder in the same location as the other standard folders, i.e. Documents, Music, Pictures, etc. When I try to create a folder called Videos, it either tells me that there already is one and cancels, or it will create it and then subsequently not show it there.

It's not hidden, I've checked on that, or renamed. It's gone but Windows seems to think it is still there. Of course I'd like to have it back...how do I either restore it, or hard delete it so that I can create my own?

I'm running Windows Vista Home Premium, 32 bit, on an Acer Aspire laptop from 2009. Any help greatly appreciated!

It happens . The file will take load of the file icon of the default program associated . If you shift from WMP to VLC as your default music player, it will also happen .

There is no way to get back unless you get back to default default application .

I'm running Vista SP1 on a Dell XPS M1530. I had a couple extractor programs, like 7-zip, installed, which changed the icon for zip files-no problem there. I uninstalled those programs so now I just have Windows Explorer handle the extracting again. However, zip files now show up with some sort of default icon: white background with a blue monitor and gray computer tower next to it (<http://img233.imageshack.us/img233/1420/foldersfa9.jpg> bottom row, 4th from left).

My question is, how do I get the nice default yellow folder with a zipper on it? I'd prefer not to edit the registry due to past bad experiences, but any advice would be appreciated.

Hello guys,

I'm having a bit of a problem. Earlier tonight a couple of program icons started appearing as blank on my Windows 7 Pro PC. The programs in question were Word 07 and Powerpoint 07. I decided to try and fix them by rebuilding the icon cache but... unfortunately it just seems to have made things worse!

Now all of the Office programs have blank icons, as well as my anti-virus, Skype, Steam, WLM and a couple of others. Resetting and Rebuilding the Icon Cache keeps giving me the same results...

Does anyone know how to fix this?

Thanks!

A:Rebuild Icon Cache File - Certain programs now have blank/default icons. 8(

The original files or icons from which the icon cache is populated or the registry data pointing to them may have been damaged or somehow deleted. This is hard to sort out except by reinstalling the program.

Can you try reinstalling one of those programs to see if you can get it back as a test?

Office type programs might fix this by doing a "repair", but you may need the disk to complete it.

I used a program called "Types" to change a few file icons in windows. I did the same thing on a laptop but used a different program so I didn't get this problem. After I changed the default icon for .exe every exe program changed to the default icon I had selected. Not just the programs I already had on the computer but it uses the default icon for new programs downloaded and even ones viewed on disc. And it changed all shortcuts to the default icon.

I've been able to restore most of the shortcuts through the properties menu. Interesting thing is I have to do it twice on every icon since the first attempt seems to do nothing (and refreshing the desktop doesn't work).

I've downloaded additional icon programs that have a restore setting but that hasn't worked. I've tried a registry fix but that doesn't work. Neither has using the windows restore point. I've gone into the registry itself and changed around the default icon for the exe. Sure it'll change the icon but no exe programs with their own icons will return to their original state. My last attempt has been to delete the icon cache and that has also failed.

So now that google has let me down I'm hoping someone here can help me. A big thank you in advance cause this is really annoying.

I have recently downloaded 'paint.net' to windows 7 and the icon keeps disappearing. Not necesarily on a restart but just over night or during the day at random. The program is still listed and works and it is on my start menu when I click on the windows icon in the bottom left corner. I have tried refreshing and still can't keep the shortcut on the desktop. Any ideas?

I recently got a Toshiba Satellite L500 Series Laptop.

There is an Icon or a Shortcut named "Recent Places"
I want to remove it from the desktop as I do not need it and its out of place. However I'm confused because the only options when right-clicked are: Open, Clear recent items list and Create Shortcut.

I tried dragging into the start menu but it is still on the desktop as well. I cant drag it into the recycle bin and I do not know what else to do.

Can someone please help me?

Thanks,

The Noob

A:Cant remove desktop Icon/Shortcut

Try right clicking desktop>personalize>change desktop icons (top right of the window)>uncheck recent places.

We've been able to do that for YEARS, also free, using MS TweakUi from their Powertoys.
