Nework icon has a red cross on it but connection is fine

Q: Nework icon has a red cross on it but connection is fine

Ive been using W7 since the early builds and am on HP 32bit these days.
In the past if i lost internet connection i would get a red cross on the network icon. This would go away once connection was restored.
This past week or so this cross keeps appearing. Thing is the connection is fine, no problens what so ever.

Anyone else experienced this. Please no "Clean install" replies, thats way to drastic.

Thanks for any help.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

A: Nework icon has a red cross on it but connection is fine

It sounds as though it could be a driver issue. On the odd occasion when I lose connectivity, it's only to the Internet so my icon just shows a yellow triangle with the exclamation mark superimposed on it. Fortunately, my router automatically reconnects if this happens, so I'm not down for more than about a minute.

As your board is based on the NVidia nForce 570 SLI MCP, you could try to see if these drivers might help (make sure that you create a restore point prior to installing) NVIDIA DRIVERS 15.53 WHQL

It's very odd. It just appeared the other day and I have no idea how I caused it. Usually that means no output device detected, but it is detected and sound works.

Hovering over the sound icon it says:

Volume: 100
Speakers
Realtek High Definition Audio

The volume control won't display.

hey hows it going. my internet's working fine. and everything is fine on the network but on one pc it is saying no network connection. like its unplugged. but yet everything just works fine

just wondering. could that be from a prior connection in a different area/ service or server that its talking about?

just wondering what this is all about..thanks

A:network works fine. but no connection icon in taskbar

Is this a wired or wireless connection? It's probably a second network adapter that isn't in use right now.
Post the following.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt:

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following command:

Note that there is a space before the /ALL, but there is NOT a space after the / in the following command.

IPCONFIG /ALL

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

I am connected to a network and have internet access.

However, the network status icon has a red cross on it as if i am not connected. Even more strange is if i hover over the icon its read "Network Internet access"

I don't use any third party connection software and don't have any third party firewalls running.

I am plugged in direct to the router with an ethernet cable.

This isn't a massive problem but i'd prefer the icon not to have the red cross on it.

Ethernet cable working fine as when i hooked it to my laptop everything is working fine , means problem lies within the desktop and nothing wrong with cable or router port.

Troubleshoot that I had done so far :

Restarted desktop 3 times, uninstalled LAN driver, connected new Ethernet cable

Hi shah-aijaz, Sorry to hear that you are having issues with the wifi on your notebook. I have done some research and I have found that the computer that you have listed does NOT have Windows 7. Are you certain that you are giving the proper model number of your computer?  Please check the bottom of your computer and the product number should be listed on a white sticker by a bar code.

Hello @George73,  Before we go to the software part of this red x volume icon we will first have to check if your hardware is operating in the necessary parameters. Move the mouse pointer over the lower right side of the screen for the ?Charms? bar to open.Left click or tap on the ?Settings? feature you have in the charms bar. In the search box you are presented in the ?Settings? feature you need to write ?Device Manager?. After the search is finished you will need to left click or tap on the ?Device Manager? icon. If you are prompted by a window you will need to type in the administrator account and password to go further with the steps below. Double click (left click) on the ?Sound, video and game controllers? feature in the device manager window. In the expanded menu in the ?Sound, video and game controllers? feature look to see if you have there a sound card and if it is properly installed. Note: if it is not properly installed you will see a yellow sign next to it or you won?t have a sound card present in that menu. If you have a yellow sign next to the sound card you will need to left click on that icon. Left click on the ?Properties? feature after you clicked on the sound card. Left click or tap on the ?General? tab you have in the properties window. You will have a box under the ?Device status? feature and you will see in that box what exactly the issue with... Dear all,

I am in dire need of help to fix my laptop sound card. My laptop (TOSHIBA M600 on windows vista basic as its original operating system) has been working perfectly for the last 3 yrs. Just about 3 weeks ago the the volume icon on the bottom right hand corner of the screen had a red cross marked on it. I am no longer able to listen to online lectures, music, videos etc. I opened the device manager and found no such things as Sound, video and game controllers. This happened after one of my friend installed a faked windows 7. Since then i decided to buy and re-installed a legal window 7 professional, but the problem persists. The volume icon at the bottom of the screen still has a red cross on it.

Some kind people out there please help me...i am a student and cannot afford it to be fixed by those expensive computer genius in the computer store. Also....please use simple lay people english when you give instructions or help.

Thank you so much in advance
Noelu

A:Portege M600 - Volume icon has a red cross on it

Hi buddy,

Usually such a red cross means that there is a no sound driver installed or driver is muddled up? Have you already tried to reinstall the sound driver?

What sound card you have installed?
Normally you can get all drivers on official Toshiba website but for an older model like yours I could imagine that you must check other pages. For example if you have a Realtek sound card, check the Realtek page directly: www.realtek.com

hi, i think my computer has a quite serious problem, yesterday i tried to install a few programs n maybe one of them contains a virus, when i did the virus scanning, i found there's trojan virus there.
i cudn't open my c: or my documents, and almost all.

i tried to cleaned them up using my antivirus program (AVG 7.5, free ed)
and it works

after that, i tried to do another scanning, and the result shows that it has no viruses anymore,

fyi- before there was 8 file were infected, most of them are from system32

the new problem is, even though i can open all my drives like normal, but the icon of my drive c now has changed into a red cross symbol, as shown in the attachments, "screen"

and when i turn my laptop on, there's a box appears, shown in attachments, "error1"

can u please tell me what is going on with my laptop?
and what should i do?

thanks a lot.

A:why does the icon of my computer (drive c) is changing to a red cross symbol?

Save HJTInstall.exe to your desktop.
Doubleclick on the HJTInstall.exe icon on your desktop.
By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis .
Click on Install.
It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
Once installed, it will launch Hijackthis.
Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
DO NOT have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Hello,

My Dell-VOSTRO laptop is kinda in a weird situation now with spyware, and hopefully someone can help me fix this. It's been bugging me for the past 3 days. The problem is on desktop bottom right corner, where the volume icon and msn icon are, there is always a round red icon with white cross pops up something like this:

"Your computer is infected!

Windows has detected spyware infection!

It is recommended to use special antispyware tools to pervent data loss. Windows will now download and install the most up-to-date antispyware for you.

Click here to protect your comupter from spyware!"

I know this is a spyare spam try to trick you to install their program and not a real windows warning, so I haven't clicked it yet. but I just can't get rid of it. I've tried quite a few things, but nothing works.

There is also a weird thing is that I can't run HijackThis on this laptop, I even renamed it to "Fumble" as someone previous suggested, but it still won't work. Once you double click on the icon, nothing happens. Therefore, I don't really have a HJT log to post. I did follow the steps to run a Panda virus scan and attached the log. Hope it helps in some degrees.

Someone, please help me on this to get rid of that red round icon with the white cross spyware or let me know what need to be disabled to get HiJackThis running to produce a log for you guys.

Thanks a lot in advance!

There is a strange problem I am facing for quite a long time. Whenever I get connected to the internet using a dialup connection, the connection icon which used to come in the taskbar doesn't come. Also when I connect usb devices there is no device connection icon in the taskbar. The strange thing is that when I go to control panel and load "sound and audio device" and tick "place the volume icon in the taskbar", both internet connection icon and usb devices icon appear in the taskbar. Whenever I reboot the system, the volume icon disappears again, needing to re-tick the "place the volume icon in the taskbar" in the "sound and audio device". This is really annoying me. Windows 7 32-bit won't play sound.

Device Manager\Sound, video and game controllers\High Definition Audio Device ok.
Double click and window says:
High Definition Audio Device Properties\General: Device status says This device is working properly.

Speakers are plugged in and make a crackle when plugging in to correct holes.

Mystery?

A:Sound/Mixer icon has red cross. No Audio Output Device is installed.

If it's shown as "working properly" in the Device Manager, the speaker icon you have can also be because the sound is muted.

You show "High Definition Audio Device" rather than the actual sound device which suggests you have the generic Windows/Microsoft installed sound driver rather than the actual sound driver from the motherboard vendor. In many cases the generic Windows driver does not work or work correctly.

You can try and uninstall/reinstall by RIGHT clicking on the entry for the sound and then LEFT click "Uninstall" (DO NOT check the box to uninstall the drivers) then restart the PC and when Windows starts it will detect and reinstall the sound. This fixes a lot of flakey problems.

If the uninstall/reinstall does not fix it, the next step is to get the correct sound drivers and install them.

Evidently the cable works. I checked that the firewall was turned off. Any ideas?

I'm thinking of getting myself some retro hardware with serial connections on them. This is as opposed to getting PS/2 because PS/2 can slip off easily, whereas serial connections can be screwed together. I've done the research and know that USB to serial adapters can solve this. However, I narrowly missed what could have been a major faux pas insofar as my competence as a computer engineer is concerned. Can I plug a serial peripheral originally intended for a Mac into a PC via a USB to serial adapter and it will function (assume the buttons are remappable)? The logic side of me says yes because a serial connector is similar to an RJ-45 connector in that the pins are predetermined by some industry standard to work in a specific way across all platforms and it's just the application of said product that will determine how it will function. However, I, also, know that American cars require American socket sets to be able to tinker, adjust, or repair said car.

Feel free to throw in any advice insofar as PS/2 peripherals are concerned as well. I may not care for that interface. But, I welcome the information.

Is it possible to do that ? I knew it might be possible but I found some saying that if the ADSL modem is connected using LAN then it will not work.

So here's my setup:
PC A and PC B (Both using W7 64)
> PC A got two LAN port (LAN C and D)
> PC B got one LAN port
Cross Over cable
ADSL Modem - Connected to PC A via LAN C

What I want to do is connect the crossover via my PC A's LAN C to PC B's LAN to share the internet connection. Is it possible ? I had managed to make the PC B joined my PC A in homegroup, which mean file sharing has no problem at all. I just doesn't know how to set the IP, DNS, gateway to make my PC B access my PC A internet. Any help ? Please let me know it is possible.

Thanks!

A:Share internet connection via cross over cable ?

Yes it is possible. And since you are using x64 I'm assuming you have a modern PC with a gigabit network card. With gigabit cards you do NOT need a cross-over card, part of the gigabit spec includes auto-sense ethernet ports so any cable should work fine.

What you'll have to do is on PC A go to your network card adapter -> Properties and there should be a Sharing tab. Enable it and then setup your PC B to use DHCP.

I am seeking advice here to solve a problem with internet connection on my laptop.
The laptop (Thinkpad X61 running 32 bit Vista) seems to be ok to connect to my router, which is connected to a cable modem. Internet is also connected on the base level (more details below). However Internet Explorer (or firefox, opera) cannot find any web page, and Mozilla Thunderbird email program cannot connect to email server.
I am decently ok with computers, so I have run some checks myself. This is not a problem of router or cable modem, as my other computers can access internet through the same router and modem. Also, the laptop gets an IP address from the router and can connect to shared resources on other computers within the same network.
The laptop also finds outside addresses and get a response when I run ping command, e.g. ping www.google.com or ping www.yahoo.com, suggesting that the connection to DNS server is fine at the base level.
I was suspecting that windows firewall, my Symantec antivirus or VPN is creating the problem. But the problem persists after I disabled firewall and the antivirus software and deleted VPN connection.
One important thing to mention is that this problem starts when after a software install, which I removed afterwards. I tried to run netsh reset by "netsh winsock reset catalog", "netsh int ipv4 reset myreset.log" and "netsh int ipv6 reset myreset.log" and restart. Still does not work.
Really desperate for a solution. Any ... Read more

Hi folks, would greatly appreciate any help and advice on the following problem that's been happening over the last few months...

I have a Dell Dimension 9200 running Windows XP and use a Buffalo WBMR-G54 Wireless Router to connect to the internet. I also connect wirelessly with a Dell Latitude laptop and an iPhone.

What's been happening on the desktop computer is a loss of connection for 30 seconds at a time or so with the message 'Local Area Connection (a network cable is unplugged)'.

Yet while my desktop is disconnected my other devices are using the wireless connection without a break so it doesn't look like there's anything wrong with my broadband provider.

The Network Connection properties are:
Intel(R) 82566DC Gigabit Network Connection
PCI bus 0, device 25, function 0
Link speed: 10Mbps/Full Duplex
Driver Version: 9.4.21.0

It seems to be happening much more frequently in the evenings than during the day, especially when using Skype.

Any pointers and help would be great, let me know if you need any more info.

Many thanks

Past 3 months Internet has been crashing and yellow triangle appears. I've tried everything apart from chucking out the window. Now the yellow triangle has been replaced with a Red Cross on network connection.  Network cable is not plugged in properly or broken, I've tried 3 different working cables but still no joy. Im beginning to think it's the network card.ive looked at everything on google, you tube, HP, Windows, for suggestions, still no joy.My hub is working ok with tablet and TV sportAny ideas would be gratefully received, I'm at my wits end

Hi: The only suggestion I can offer would be to try updating the ethernet driver directly from Realtek. You want the 2nd file listed on the webpage. http://www.realtek.com.tw/DOWNLOADS/downloadsView.aspx?Langid=1&PNid=13&PFid=5&Level=5&Conn=4&DownTy... If that doesn't resolve the issue, I would agree that the ethernet chip on the motherboard has died.

I have my LAN setup:
ADSL modem ->Router->Compute*r A , Computer B (wireless)

My laptop connects fine... but all of a sudden it just stops connecting to the internet. However the connection has a strong signal and still says it is connected...but it just lags and doesnt connect. Then it'll come back for little while. Sometimes I'll repair the wireless connection and it works again but only for a few minutes.

But here's a spooky thing....all this doesn't happen when i unplug my AC! that's right I'll have it plugged in to the power outlet, and wifi comes and goes...as soon as i unplug it and it runs on battery...the internet works fine...yikes

A:Solved: wifi connection coming and going..but LAN connection is fine

I can't see your exact positioning, but it sounds like you need to move your "brick" so that it is not interfering with the wireless signal when plugged in. When I forget, and start getting the same thing, I move mine at least a foot away from the wireless adaptor and out of the path to the router.

Respected Sir,
Sevenforums,

HARDWARE- I have Win 7,Home Premium,64bit,Dell Inspiron 15R N5010.
My network adapters are: Realtek PCIe FE Family controller & DW1501 Wireless-N WLAN Half miniport adapter.
My ADSL modem + WIFI router is Netgear DGN2200v3 latest version of firmware v1.1.00.10_1.001.

PROBLEM- My network connection icon in task bar shows Red cross disconnected or revolving Blue Busy circle network on wired and wireless connection. But my internet connection works perfectly fine. Please suggest solution to enable network notification correctly. I will carry out every possible advise to enable correct network notification. Problem arise when I personally fiddled with router's security option like changing WPA2-PSK[AES] to WPA-PSK[TKIP] + WPA2-PSK[AES] and again back.
Right now is WPA-PSK[TKIP] + WPA2-PSK[AES]. I have connected my laptop to internet via LAN cable.

My Netgear DGN2200v3 provides WEP, WPA-PSK[TKIP], WPA2-PSK[AES], WPA-PSK[TKIP] + WPA2-PSK[AES], WPA/WPA2 Enterprise. Also please tell which type of network security option should I keep to avoid further conflict. So which should I choose?

I also have posted this issue in Microsoft community but didn't got expected reply nor solution, Please check this link about what Microsoft community answered:
Red X or Blue busy circle symbol on system tray connection icon even - Microsoft Community

I request Sevenforums to please clear my doubts and guide me till problem solves.
Thank you.

I would like to add more of the events regarding above issue.
Today morning when I ran sfc/scannow program again I got following message-
Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. Details are included in the CBS.Log windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.logs

But again same problem arised that after typing findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\Logs\CBS\CBS.log >"%userprofile%\Desktop\sfcdetails.txt" I got 0 bytes file on desktop and original CBS.log file was of 4.42 mb .

From my layman point of view their is some thing wrong with my Windows OS and I want to repair it without crashing my system or re-installing Win7. Also I want to tell that recently before getting wifi broadband connection I had deleted my old restore points, disabled hibernation, disable pagefile.sys because on C drive had only 2 gb free space. After deleting them, I ran CCleaner & removed junk files, many unused programs, update my old software with 2013 versions. Then I ran disc check, defragmentation, completing this I installed Netgear genie software to control my newly establish wifi broadband connection. Then I created system restore point, at that time this Red cross or Busy blue circle was not issue. It occur when I personally decided to choose WPA-PSK[TKIP] + WPA2-PSK[AES] from WPA2-PSK[AES] (which was default set my bsnl network technician) se... Read more

Hey Guys,

I removed the AC Power cable for a split second (battery was 100% at the time) and my computer just shutdown.
I replugged and rebooted and now I've got a "red cross" next to the power icon in my system tray (see attached image)

If I put the mouse over it - it just says "Fully Charged 100%" and shows my current power plan; which is "high performance" and been using it since I got the laptop.

I'm running Windows Vista Home Premium on my HP Pavilion DV5.
Computer's about a year old now.
I've update all my drivers and checked Device manager and there are no errors/warnings for anything battery related.

Any suggestions on how to get this fixed or what the problem might be?

A:"Red Cross" on Power Icon + Shutdown when AC Power removed.

Your laptop is not detecting your battery. Try removing the battery, and putting it back in.

You might have to buy a new battery.

Hi, After start up yesterday, there was a red x on the network icon but able to surf the internet fine. Today is the same.

The only thing I recall from yesterday was a windows update for Vista (KB2636276). I believe I shut down sometime after the update and later in the day started up the pc again, with the red x on the network icon and able to go on net.

I changed from NIS2011 to Private Firewall and MSE on August 5th. I do recall that while looking for any remnants of Norton/Symantec to remove, I was able to view hidden files in Device Manager and I noticed that under Network Adapters is over a hundred line items of 6T04 Adapter and then other items listed as well. It only shows when viewing hidden files, so may have always been like that. (I read about the command to view hidden files to find norton/symantec leftovers

After I had the new firewall and tried to connect to internet, I couldn't and I went into networks and clicked randomly and the firewall popped up asking if two ip's were to be allowed (I think).. so I said allow, and then it connected to the net. Two days later, the internet wouldn't connect on start up and again, I clicked somewhere, either the icon or back in the network page, and I am not sure if the firewall asked again about some ip's, but then I was now connected via network 2.

It has worked fine since then and yesterday now getting the red x on the network icon, yet can surf the net. I don't know anything about networks... Read more

Common issue. I've seen this happen before. In fact, I use Windows 7 and have seen this plenty of times running Windows 7. It'll have the X but even if you click on it, it'll say Internet access

I an in the middle an update from XP to Win-7. Everything is going fine so far, but I don't like the way the desktop icons are shown. Under XP you could go to an "advanced" set of options and adjust the appearance of just about anything.

When I did a similar upgrade on a laptop a couple of years ago, I discovered that the same set of adjustments are available in Win-7, but as far as I can tell, you have to fall back to a "basic" non-aero theme to get to them.

My particular concern is that I'd like to rescale the desktop icons to about half of their default size, and reduce the spacing between them. Mostly so I can fit everything I want on the desktop into two columns.

Is there some hidden way to accomplish this? I've found that the theme file is in plain ascii text, and I'm wondering if I can find the appropriate variables and set them by brute force? Or is there some way to get to the appearance adjustment settings without giving up the aero features?

I connected my HP Deskjet 450 and it downloaded the driver, it works fine, BUT it does not give me a notification icon or "safely remove hardware". So when I'm done printing I just disconnect the USB.

ALSO, since it doesn't connect with the HP software, I can't see how much ink is left (!).

Are these two things normal? Anything I can do about them?

Thanks!

1. if you want the notification icon--you may need to set it in the 'notification area icons' control panel
2. no need to unplug USB--just turn off printer
3. "since it doesn't connect with the HP software"....did you install the HP software? if not see this webpage

It just occurred to me that there are many of us that work on one platform on our desktop, but different on our phones or tablets.

Does anyone know of any source for lists of applications that can utilize the same data on each environment? I am thinking that a good cross reference would be good to help us select applications on each environment and if some resource became popular enough, it could lead software vendors to support a variety of data formats in each environment they support, or provide import/export capabilities to support those of us who use multiple platforms.

My personal preference is to use open source or free/inexpensive software, but the need becomes greater when tools in those realms don't exist.

If nobody knows of an existing source, I think I might start something... A listing of programs that can share files for two or more of the following platforms would be a start:

Windows Desktop
Windows Metro (or whatever they are calling it)
Android
IOS
Linux

In my mind, a program would be included if any of the following applied:

a) Versions exist for multiple platforms
b) Works via web
c) Works directly with files from an app on a different platform
d) Exports files to standard formats for use by others (comma delimited, xml, JSON etc)

My personal ideal would be to have an app in each environment I use that exploits the interface of that environment well, and shares data transparently with an app on one of my other devices. For me, I also want apps that ... Read more

hey, im aware that this problem is pretty frequent after browsing forums a couple of times but never actually found a solution to the problem.

ok, so, few months ago, my computor was pretty messed up, swamped with viruses etc

so ive cleaned my pc up, roughly got everything back on track

apart from audio

k so audio works fine with any media players installed on my pc, wmp, winamp, vlc, nero, real, etc. fine, movies and music, even online radio1 works

the problem is that, where you control the windows audio in the little minimized icon which is found on the bottom right taskbar, that has dissappeared, which probably has something to do with it, but also, when i have numerously attempted to play audio videos on youtube or myspace, or music on myspace/profiles, that kind of thing

i get no sound at all, video generally plays fine just no sound whatsoever

im curious as to how it happened in the first place, but also would ideally like to find a solution for it as it is quite annoying

any advice would be greatly appreciated

Okay, totally new to VPN setup, but I'm excited that I've gotten my first one to work - kind of. I have a Cisco RVS4000 and a Windows 7 machine setup as a workstation server. That machine is setup as the VPN host and allowing callers to connect from IPs in the range 192.168.5.90 to 192.168.5.92. Using the QuickVPN client, I can connect to VPN just fine. woo-hoo. But I can't figure out how to access the other machines on the network once I'm in. My IPs are in the same subnet - 255.255.255.0, but the office network is 192.168.5.*** and my home is 192.168.1.***. Is that where my problem is? Do I need to be in the 192.168.5.*** range?

The way I understand it I don't need to setup a IPSec tunnel since I've used the QuickVPN client, right? Makes sense as I CAN get connected. I just don't know what to do now and can't seem to find it in the manuals or elsewhere that I've searched.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

P.S.
I did figure out how to manage the router across the VPN and can get into it just fine. I just don't know how to set up connection to the workstation server.
