Thinkpad S1 Yoga 20CD will not power on

Q: Thinkpad S1 Yoga 20CD will not power on

Lenovo Yoga 20CD will not power on after shut down yesterday. When I plug in charger the red dot above the "i" blinks three times. I have removed battery, held power for five seconds and put battery back in, no change

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I'm facing the same issue. Suddenly it won't power on. Only LED indicator blinks when plugging in the power supply; and the LED turns on for a few seconds without plugging in the power supply. Beside that nothing happens. Any clue how to solve this? I've checked the connectors but they look ok. I've also tried resetting via "reset button" on the backside. further I've tried several sequences pushing the power button and holding it for 30 - 60 seconds. So far nothing helped. Any clue? Thanks.

My S1 Yoga, 20CD-00B1US, is stuck with the screen off and the power LED stuck on. When I try to push or hold the power button it beeps two short beeps and the LED stays solid. I was running the Lenovo Bios Update Software directly from their site. The power cord was plugged in and no other programs were running (aside from background programs). Now it is just stuck like this. Any thoughts or help would be great. I can't even get it to force shut off. Thank you in advance!

After running updates the computer will no longer POST.Turning on power only boot cycles (turns on for 3 seconds, turns off, turns on etc.), screen is black, no POST.Possibly a BIOS update fail? Need to spend a grand to get a new MB?? Tried removing the battery, drain power, use only power cord. No luck.

A:After update ThinkPad Yoga, 20CD cannot POST!

I wish they would stop pushing BIOS updates other than at the request and guidance of support, they seem to fail too often and brick far too many systems.       You can usually perform a Boot Block Recovery on modern motherboards, but I do not think Lenovo has implemented that technology on their laptops for security reasons, but you might still check with Lenovo Support to see if they have any options short of replacing the system board.  BTW:   Does your system have the emergency reset hole on the back side of the case, and if so have you tried unplugging it from the power supply, and then pressing it for about 10 seconds or so?  (see item #1 on page 46 of the Hardware Maintenance Manual) Hardware Maintenance Manualhttps://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc/pccbbs/mobiles_pdf/s1_yoga_hmm_en_sp40a26742_01.pdf

Long story short, i erased everything and performed a clean install of Windows 10 64bit and the computer stopped shutting down or go into sleep mode. I had Windows 8.1 64bit, i upgraded it to Windows 10 about a year ago, when it first came out. The upgrade went almost fine, some bit issue with the OS but nothing serious, so i went on till i decided, to correct those little issues, to perform a clean install.  So i downloaded the media creation tool, the version with the anniversary update, and erased everything, but keeping the recovery partition. After the install, i started having troubles with entering sleeping mode or shutting down the laptop.I installed the power management driver i found on the site (n1cku04w). With that I can shut down even if it strangely blinks a few times before shutting down. I can enter sleep mode and wake it up properly if I do it from the start menu, but if i close the laptop or try using the power button takes me to a state where OS is sleeping and HW is still awake, so i can't do anything apart from force it off. Strangely too, the driver on the site is overriden from another version i recieve from System Update app. But, with the version from System Update app, i can't even shut it down properly, the OS dies but the HW is still awake and fully functioning leading me to kill it pressing the Power Button. Anybody have faced the same issue? Simultaniously my keyboard backlight, touchpoint and trackpad stopped working. They do not appear in device manager and reinstalling drivers did nothing. On Lenovos advice, I purchased replacement palmrest, trackpad, keyboard etc and fitted them successfully but this has made no difference. Could it be a power management issue? I've updated PM drivers. Motherboard damage? As far as I know no water or physical damage has occurred.

My Yoga S1 has contradictory, intermittent power issues that I'm trying to chase down. Culprits are bad power bric/cord/plug or power socket on mother board or power board that feeds into power button/led on. One day it blacked out and wouldn't restart to hard drive or windows stage. I did get an error code which I can't remember 5100 or 5500 poss?, that seemed to indicate the power board or ribbons to that needed replacement or re-attachment. So fiddled with it and it did fire up in windows all ok. Then ran out of power and died again. power button wouldn't light up. plugging in power unit did light up led as getting charge. Left it overnight and then it miraculously charged up. pushed power button light up twice then nothing. took out power board/detached ribbon, then it fired up to windows, fixed some hd errors and has been restarting without problems. Except now there is no plug showing on battery icon when plugged in. So not recharging but I'm sure the battery is good. And logically, the power brick and plug must be feeding electricity into laptop to get it to recharge enough to start up. So power socket and plug may be suspect with intermittent contact problems. Or the power board somehow is involved in this? I've ordered a new powerboard as easy screw in and cheap. My question about powerboard is does this control ability of plug to charge battery? power brick with new plug is next order from ebay. but the power socket, which see... Hello to everyone,I'll need your help. I installed a new, fresh Win 8.1 operating system on my Yoga S1. I also mount a new Intel SSD in the place of the old HDD. So it's way faster now I need to have a HDD password, also a start-up password. So, i set the same password (I'm sure, double-triple check it) for supervisor, power-on and HDD password. I enabled the password on restart option. So here is the problem - when i power on the Yoga, it asks for the power-on pass. I enter it and it is corect. Then, it shows that it enters the HDD1 pass automatically and it is succesfull. The system boots and it's fine. But when i press Restart from Windows, it powers off, ask for power-on pass - correct, then it asks for HDD1 pass. It's the same and should be automatically filled, like in cold start. Ok, it enter it manually, but it is incorrect. I also tried with blank pass, but without succes. So, after three incorect passwods, it freezes. Then, I power off completelly, start again, enter the power-on pass and it's fine, it boots the OS. So, it's not working on restart, but cold starts are OK. As I said, I checked many thimes that the passwords are the same. Please advice guys. Thanks to everyone

A:Yoga S1 (20CD) Strange HDD password behaviour

Do you still have the 2.5: drive also?  I have seen this behavior once before in a machine with a 2.5" drive and an M.2 SSD.  It turned out that the problem was related to the 2.5" drive, even though the bad pw showed up on the M.2 drive at restart.  My 2.5" drive was originally from an HP and there was something screwed up in the HP firmware that interfered with the M.2 drive.  It took me a long time to figure out what was wrong.  It also might have the same symptoms with an HP SSD

My wife's Yoga just today stopped charging or turning on.  It was working seemingly fine before and would last several hours on battery (so don't think the battery was at the end of it's natural life).   The little blinky light on the over no longer blinks when plugged in.  There's 0 sign of life.  Here's what I've tried: 1) Hold power button for 20 seconds (both with and without power plugged in while holding before plugging back in after)2) Push the reset button with a pin for 10 seconds (again, with and without power plugged in)3) Used voltage meter to validate 20V from power supply. Also tried a second power supply.4) Removed cover and used voltage meter to validate 20V at board soldier points for the power jack (so power reaching board)5) Checked all chips, hard drives, connectors that were readily visible to make sure they were tight. Nothing when plugging back in. Questions:1) Anyone know of any common remedies or things I can look for?2) Any general guidance on getting something like this fixed? (ie, send to Lenovo, find a big name store like Best Buy, other?) Thanks!

I needed to replace my keyboard on my Thinkpad Yoga 20CD, so I swapped parts, and long story short, no post, no BIOS, no external video.  When I plug in the AC adapter, I get 3 blinking red lights on the "i" Thinkpad LED.  If I press the power button, the backlight on the keyboard comes on for 1 second, fades away, and the red LED stays on.  Fan on the CPU spins for about 3 seconds, then stops.  There is a chip on the motherboard underneath the card reader that gets EXTREMELY hot on both the AC power and battery, even without turning it on.  I guess I just need to know if I somehow fried the board when swapping parts?  If there is a short somewhere on the board?  Is there anything I can do to get it to boot, and prevent it from getting so hot?  I've tried a complete power drain, removing the CMOS battery, and leaving it sit overnight with nothing plugged in, all to no avail.  Any help or suggestions wold be greatly appreciated.

I came across some posts on Best buy Geeksquad and also on this forum (https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-S-Series-ThinkPad-Yoga/Re-Thinkpad-S3-Yoga-14-Random-shut-offs... ) which says that the SW2 switch may not be getting activated. I tried to locate SW2 switch on my laptop but it seems to be missing. PLs see attached picture. I have marked location of teh switch. In the other forum, i can see a tiny switch in that place.I am not sure if Lenovo remoevd that switch in later models or if the switch is missing on my laptop causing it to stop powering on.

I purchased a refurbished ThinkPad S1 Yoga (20CD-00BYUS) a month ago, from eBay (US-based shop) with guarantee active up to April 2015. Everything was fine and satisfying until yesterday. After a normal shutdown the night before, it won't power on anymore. The battery was still about 50% on the last shut down. If I press the power button (normal press or even more than 5 sec press), the "red i dot" will light for about 4 sec and then off. No noise, no other sound. I tried to push the emergergency reset button as instructed on the manual, but it didn't work.I tried also making bootable USB, but also didn't work.Anyone have idea what I have to do before the ultimate option = send it to the customer service for repair? I read some similar problem in this forum and it seems useful to check the MB cable. Is it true? Will it affect the guarantee? Thank you for your help.

no. i was the one that provided the MB cable solution. From your description, it does not fit the problem. If the MB cable is disconnected, the led should not even lightup when you press the power button. the laptop should be totally unreponsive, except when the power adapter is unplugged then plugged back in.

Hello all. My laptop used work perfectly until the day I decided to remove all the extra stuff by doing a clean install of Windows 10.  I predownloaded all the drivers I would need and then did the clean installation.  Now I have an issue with my wifi.  It randomly drops connection to wifi and is slow to start working again.  After coming out of sleep it does not automatically reconnect to the ap and I have to trigger it manually.  Separately (i think) when coming out of sleep, the login screen does not respond to the keyboard and I am forced to use the mousepad to click or a touchscreen swipe to get to the password field. What I'm seeking is an official list of drivers that are required for a clean windows 10 install on a thinkpad yoga series 20CD.  If order of installation is critical, please give this also.  I believe I downloaded everything available from the support page but just want to be sure.  Sometimes not all drivers are available when filtering by OS "Windows 10".   Thanks in advance. Laptop specs are:512gb ssdmemory card slot2.4/5 n/ac wireless 7260ac w/bluetooth

Hi there, hopefully someone can help me. Back when my laptop was still under warranty, I complained to Lenovo about the many scratches I was getting on my screen from using their pen. I don't press hard when I draw, and I even bought replacement nibs just in case there was something sharp on the one I was using. Alas, nothing helped. This didn't happen on the last tablet Thinkpad (X61) I had! At the time, I couldn't afford to send my laptop in to get it repaired. I was in the middle of a VERY busy college year. But now, the scratches are so numerous, it's really affecting my ability to work on it. Is there a way to just... replace the matte finish? Looks like it's like a screen protector to me. Is that something I can purchase on my own, or would I nee to take my laptop to a repair place to get it put on correctly? I tried to see if I could take the thing off myself, but I can't even get my fingernail under a corner. I HOPE it's a screen protector of sorts, because there's no way I can afford replacing the entire screen.

One of my end users has a ThinkPad Yoga 20CD-00BYUS. He's one of the few users in my organization with a Lenovo device. His hard drive failed. I've purchased a replacement, but don't have any setup/recovery media. Is there a way to obtain this? I can't seem to find a way to do so on the Lenovo site, at least not for a device out of warranty.

A:Yoga 20CD hard drive failure - recovery media

If the machine has been upgraded to windows 10, you can download (free) from Microsoft.  To obtain the media to recover your machine to its original configuration, you can call 1-800-426-7378 and tell them you need to purchase a recovery set for a machine out of warranty.

I will add that Microsoft does not make it easy to apply security and driver updates to a newly-recovered windows 7 system.  If you had win 7 and you ever want to upgrade, now is the time.

There are reports of extreme throttling on X1 Carbon Gen6 (reviews on Lenovo reviews US page, or reddit). It seems X1C6 is limited to 23W/29W TDP, while X1 Yoga Gen 3 is limited to 44W TDP for short and long term bursts.  It makes little sense as physically X1C6 cooler looks bigger thus thould be able to handle longer/harder loads. Can we hope that it will be fixed in the nearest future? Or is there an actual reason for lowering X1C6 TDP, so people who expect 8650U to run at 44W should just look into buying X1Y3?

Hello,  this has been solved here, but the version of "defect" is indeed the opposite. (sorry my english)  As other users solved this problem with - it did not help using more powerful adapter with 90W 4.5A or upgrade BIOS. Power Saver off, no other power saver activated. Many times HW tests from Windows Troubleshooting and Lenovo Vantage - everything OK.  I attached here HWiNFO specification. - Lenovo Thinkpad Yoga 460 (Windows 1709, all current drivers updated - no change with update 1803 - same situation)  The power adapter (and also i use many others - no change) will immediately reduce the processor frequency to a constant of 0.39GHz and using the bounce between 0 - 15% .Reinstall Windows, HW test and drivers etc. everything is OK.  Even no help from Settings - Windows - Options of Power - set min. usage processor 100% - no affects. The problem persists. ..omg... , whats that? Common opening of Explorer, Word, copying etc., and other elementary activities are now a matter of minutes - big loss of performance. Thank for your help

Two ThinkPad X1 Yoga Gen2 TabletPCs will successfully boot into Windows 10 just fine from a hard poweroff.  But once in windows, if i choose Restart, it will hang at the "LENOVO" BIOS  level boot up logo with "To interrupt normal startup, press Enter".   Stuck at Lenovo BOOT BIOS initialization screen, right before handoff to the Operating System. "To interrupt normal startup, press Enter" At this point, pressing ENTER does not work.CTRL-ALT+DEL causes the screen to change shade for a moment, but effectively does nothing.Changing the UEFI settings to diagnostics results in black screen.Holding the power switch to force a poweroff, waiting a few moments, and then powering on results in a successful windows startup.  DevMGMT.msc does NOT see bluetooth and there is "Unknown USB Device (Device Descriptor Request Failed)" entry under "Universal Serial Bus controllers".  I have run all automatic updates via "Lenovo Vantage" and the manual TPM update.   I can boot into the firmware setup and have had it revert to factory defaults and reverted to factory defaults for all security settings.   I even tried the Win10 repair startup problems, but it says it cannot fix this.

A:ThinkPad X1 Yoga Gen2 does not Restart, requires hard power off. Stuck at Lenovo boot logo.

It looks to me like you have a faulty hardware issue or a serious driver issue. Try the Lenovo recovery to put the device back to the factory windows install. If that fails, I would think you have a hardware issue.

I posted a similar question earlier and people referred me to the Yoga (much appreciated).  However, I was interested in the 2.6 lb carbon version with touch screen capabilities.  Asus has a Spin 7 model that is very good at 2.65lb, but I miss the red mouse toggle in the middle of the keyboard and Asus's track pad was designed too large....causing unintended tapping.  The Yoga, while nice, is heavier than I was looking for.  The 14 inch screen is about 3.3lb? the 12 inch at 3? I thought that some of the earlier Thinkpad Carbons had touch screen and was hoping they would make a return soon.  Thanks,

Hello, I am looking for a laptop which can be securely attached/locked (so that I can let it during the night in the office). Could you please tell me if the following laptops have a security slot (Kensington or similar) to attach it somewhere?THINKPAD X1 CARBON (5TH GEN)THINKPAD X1 YOGA (2ND GEN) I do not find it described in the specifications, but from the available pictures, it seems that they have some kind of security slot. Thanks!

The Thinkpad sticker with the red light above the 'i' doesn't turn on unless the screen turns to tablet mode. Is there any way for the light to stay on all the times? The one near the keyboard does work, the issue is with the light on the outside lid.

I am hhaving difficulty finding an acceptable scaling mix between resolution, system scaling, and edge scaling. At 1080p, 125%, 125%, os navigation is mostly fine, but edge text is way too large. At 1080p, 125%, 100%, edge text is way too small. At all combinations text is inflated (but crisp) in certain elements while fuzzy in others. What scaling combinations work best for you? I am considering returning this to Best Buy and upgrading to a Pro 4 / Book, or even a Mac. The scaling is ruining an otherwise great experience.
