I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

All my files, all my icons, everything in my start menu except Run, Control Panel, and Connect To is blank. When I try to open the task manager it says "Task Manager has been disabled by your administrator".

I had to setup a new connection just to get access to this forum through MSN.

Any help anyone can give me is much appreciated.

A:I've lost all icons and files, desktop is blank, start menu blank

Run the unhide.exe utility. (i think it has been updated to handle this, but:

After running the unhide tool you may still be missing most of your start menu shortcuts? They can be found in a folder named smtmp inside:

(XP)- C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Local Settings\Temp
(W7)- C:\Users\(Username)\AppData\Local\Temp
These will be there unless you have removed temp files / folders

There might be three numbered folders inside C:\Documents and Settings\Your User Name\Local Settings\Temp\smtmp folder. The folders will be numbered 1, 2 and 4.

Inside the 1 folder is a folder named ?Programs.? This folder should be copied / pasted to (using XP) to C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu, which will already have a folder named Programs but it is safe to overwrite it since Windows will replace the subfolders without creating duplicates.

Inside the 2 folder are the quick launch items specific for the user. Select ALL of these shortcuts and copy / paste to (using XP) C:\Documents and Settings\Your User Name\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch.

Inside the 4 folder are the desktop items that should be copied to C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Desktop.

For Windows 7 users, the all users start menu is C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs and the all users desktop folder i... Read more

Yesterday my laptop had a hard fall. I have a HP Pavilion dv2000, its about 4 yrs old. The screen was cracked so i plugged in another monitor & was still able to use it. It worked normally. But then today i turned it on & my entire desktop was blank. My documents, downloads, music, etc is all blank. Even my favorite links on the left side is blank too. If i press 'Restore Favorite Links' it just blinks, then nothing. But the weird thing is if i search a file, for example mozilla, then its there. So all my files are still there but just cant be seen ? :/

Oh another thing, there's this pop up that comes up as soon as i turn on the computer.
'Data Already In Use
The data required by Compaq Connections is still engaged by user O.o
Proceed here instead or Exit.

The Proceed here button said attempt failed no matter how many times i try. I don't know if this has anything to do with the blank desktop. The weirder thing is I'm the only user on my laptop, don't even have a guest account. Everything still works the same but the blankness everywhere is freaking me out.

Please help.

Run UnHide.exe to view your hidden files.

"Compaq Connections'' is a service that automatically sends you support information, tips, ideas, and special offers from HP and our partners, especially designed for HP/Compaq desktop PC owners. It can also deliver on-line surveys that allow you to provide feedback to HP"
Compaq Connections is not needed. Disable it. Or go to Start/Run and type appwiz.cpl and press enter. In the Add Remove Programs uninstall Compaq Connections.

To just Disable 'Compaq Connections' using the MSCONFIG utility.
Click Start> Run> then type 'msconfig' (without the quotations) > click on the Start Up tab.
Find the Compaq Connections entry and uncheck the box

Note: Upon reboot you'll get a notice that you have used the System Config Utility to change your system settings, just check the box that says 'don't show this message again'. (It'll go away on it's own after a few reboots.)

Hi everyone, I have a HP 250 G4 with Windows10 pre-installed.On this pc I need to have Linux as well, so I freed some space and created a partition with the Disk Management Tool in Windows and insatlled Linux (Fedora) on the free partition. Now the pc will boot only into Linux, but I can see and access the Windows disk, so it is still there. The Windows Boot Manager gives the following error:File : \EFI\Microsoft\Boot\BCD
Status : 0xc000000f
Info : The boot configuration data for your pc is missing or contains errors. To solve the error it suggests to insert the installation disk, which I do not have. I am downloading the ISO image from www.microsoft.com/it-it/software-download/windows10ISO Do I need the product key for my WIndows? If so, how can I get it? Thanks for any advice

A:Recovering Window10 needs product key?

The product key is encoded in the BIOS.   You can use a generic installation key if one is required. Once you are able to boot into Windows again and go online, the OS will self activate, since the notebook already has a digital entitlement on the Microsoft activation servers.  You can get the generic install keys from the following web document. http://winaero.com/blog/generic-key-to-install-windows-10-rtm/  Did you create a Windows usb recovery flashdrive before you made any changes to the partitioning? I am curious as to the reason you did not consider using VMWare to run a virtual Linux OS instead of physically installing the OS.  Take a read of the following thread an Microsoft Answers.http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_10-update/how-to-repair-windows10-file-boot...

I have been having CPU issues at 100%. I contacted HP.com support and the last suggestion they suggested was to update the video card driver. I have a Nividia GSForce2 MX200 (Compaq Computer) They sent me to a link to their ftp site and I followed the instructions to download, install, and do a restart. When I restarted there were no desktop icons. It probably means that whatever files are damaged are preventing the startup from finishing. The normal internet programs that launch upon starting up the computer are not launched and I have to manually launch them by finding them. I tried doing a last known good configuiration, and when that failed in safe mode I couldn't access the Start Menu to do a system restore. I tried rolling back the driver to the previous one to no avail. I called HP and of course they wanted to charge me since it is out of warranty. I said it was their file and I asked for a supervisor who told the tech to tell me the same thing. So I was stuck with chat support. We were able to try the system restore which didn't work. I went to Control Panel and tried cliking on Taskbar or Start Menu but nothing happens. HP sent me 2 links for some patches:
HP said in an email "Based on the information that I gathered from the chat session,

Ive been running a windows 2000 for a while now, the other day i saw it was running,
but i hadn't turned it on, and the monitor was blank.
Tried the mouse and the keyboard, but got no response, so i turned it off using the
button on the front of the computer.
To my surprise after a few minutes, it turned itself back on. I watched the monitor
as it went through the motions. Memory check. Win 2000 logo. Black and white stripe.
All seemed well, until it was about to show the desktop display, it didn't show up.
Just blank, but the computer carried on clicking and twinkling its little light. Then
the Windows start up musical sound played. Then nothing, but the PC stayed on, and
its little light would blink every so often.
I waited a while, then decided this wasn't right.
Switched it off again, and started it again. same result.

Tried again, this time i went for "Safe Mode".

It started up in "Safe Mode" , but of course it can't be used fully in "Safe Mode".
I looked around it, poked at this, poked at that, all looked normal for "Safe Mode".
Shut it down, properly this time, by using the proper shut down sequence.
It shut down ok, i thought - maybe thats all it needs, a proper shut down - maybe it
will behave itself now, and fly right.

It started itself up after about four minutes, same as before.
PC running, no display.

So, i am asking for help please.

I'm on a Gateway Laptop, running Windows XP. I ran into a...pretty big problem.

My nephew, while trying to watch a show, downloaded a virus, disguised as some file needed for a video to stream. The next day, when I booted up my laptop, the desktop was completely blank(I can see my image, but no icons, no task bar, no start, nothing.) Right clicking doesn't work, however i'm able to run some programs such as firefox by using Task Manager. When I try to run anti-virus programs, the programs are either halted at installation, or can't update. The only one that has worked so far was Avira, but it didn't stop the virus.(And I can only scan once, then the virus somehow shuts it down and doesn't let me re-open.) I tried Anti Malwarebytes, but that only opens, gets 3 seconds into a scan, and shuts down and doesn't reopen. When I try to open anything that seems like it can help, I get the message, "Windows cannot access specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the items." even though i'm on the Administrator account. I've tried every single anti-virus program I could think of, tried online scanners such as Trend Micro and Kapersky, nothing seems to work.

I even tried changing the name of anti virus programs before I ran them, but to no avail. Any help you could give me would be extremely appreciated.

Icons on your desktop? Try right clicking on the desktop, where the icons were, and a new menu should appear. Within that menu, go to 'View' and select 'Show desktop icons'. Should be something like this.

In regards to 'startup' from desktop? Do you mean programs that automatically start when the computer is turned on (and your system reaches the desktop on boot)?

I can pull up my task manager, and If I kill the "Explorer.exe" process, I can see my original desktop wallpaper but i can't see my taskbar or icons. If I start a new task "explorer.exe" everything comes back with that gray background. I try running search and destroy, ad aware, norton antivirus, and AVG (which found and destroyed some viruses). Does anyone know how I can possibly fix this?

Hello and welcome to TSG. I think you need to see what else lurks in your system causing this problem. In Explorer, go to Programme Files and create a new folder and call it HJT. Then go to http://www.majorgeeks.com and download Hijack This into that directory. The latest version should come up automatically and should be 1.98.2.

You can run Hijack This frrom that directory and copy and paste the log back to a posting in here but please don't let the programme fix anything until you hear from someone here with the experience to analyse the log.

I have a friend who just came to me at work with an issue on his home PC. I am having a little bit of an issue as I have not encountered a similar problem and am unable access the PC since where at work. I thought this might be something simple for all the experts on the board.

When he last turned on his PC, his desktop came up with just his wallpaper (no icons) and no desktop Start Menu bar. The Start Menu does not come up when he pushes the Windows button on his keyboard.

He is able to bring up Task Manager and access programs using File, New Task(Run...) there. He ran his virus software and SpyBot with no issues noted.

He isn't aware of any changes made to the PC recently, though his son, home from school, did use the PC in the last few days.

Any ideas on what he might do to get his desktop icons and Start Menu back.

Appreciate any help you can give.

Similar to the recent post by pow5; I also have recently lost ALL of my Icons, the Taskbar, Menu bar, Start button, et.al.

However, unlike POW5, I don't get any type of window. Just my background picture.

This happened overnight...the last thing I did before this occurred was running SpyBot Search-and-destroy. Now...after the initial Windows log on screen, no matter which user I click on, the only thing we get is a lifeless background picture.

In order for me to use the computer, I open the Windows Task Manager (CTRL+ALT+DEL) and use the browser under New Task (Run).

I tried the "System Restore" application and chose a restore point from the beginning of August, but it didn't fix the problem.

My father-in-law, who is not fond of doing his updates has asked me to fix his PC and so far I'm stumped. It's extremely slow on start up and by the time I'm able to log on the desktop shows nothing except his wallpaper.

I can start some new tasks by pushing ctrl+alt+del but some just end up freezing up or just never starting. When I start in safe mode I can see that his Norton Liveupdate has been shutoff and is unable to turn back on. Internet connection is impossible-says there are no users and will not allow a new connection unless it is broadband (he has dial up).

Found 2 viruses so far-Download.Trojan and W32.Sasser.W which I was able to remove with his outdated virus protection.

Also found a bad startup file with msconfig called smsc.exe and tried to delete the registry key but that area was grayed out. But for some reason when I deleted the other two viruses that one disappeared too, including the registry key. But the problems are still there.

Hope someone can help.

hi, I am not very technical and would be grateful for any help. I have entered exploere.exe, but it says I don't have permission to access this. I tried restarting and typing a command on the black screen, but it said it was too long. I have run antispyware which found a backdoor agent and got rid of it, but no difference. I can't seem to open any antivirus from taskmanager to run a scan. I have seen that it might be a registry thing, but can't get in that and wouldn't know what to do anyway. I hope someone can help me, thank you

Usually this means there is a problem with the explorer.exe file.

First, open up Task Manager and see if explorer.exe is a running process.

If not do this:

Open up Task Manager > File > New > Type in explorer.exe > Press enter. . Hopefully your icons and taskbar is present again.

If your icons and task bar are back, do this.

(you will need your Windows? XP SP2 CD or an integrated SP3 CD if SP3 is installed).

(In the event that you do not have a Windows? XP CD with SP2,(or SP3) you will need to 'borrow' one from a friend or colleague, as the manufacturer's "Recovery Discs" will not work in this instance.)

Insert the Windows? XP CD in your drive. (Hold down the Shift Key to prevent it from starting.)

Go start > Run ...in the box type in sfc /scannow …please take note of the space between the sfc and the /.

This is the System File Checker...it will scan all the Windows? core system files to ensure that they are in their respective correct places, and if not replace them from the CD.

During the scan you may be asked to Insert the CD, if this happens just go retry and let it do its thing.

One important point: While sfc is running, it is not advisable to do any other work, or have any browsers/programs running on the computer, until the scan is complete. (This process will generally take around 45-65 minutes to complete).

If explorer.exe is a running process, instead, run sfc /scannow, but do it by going into Task Manager and... Read more

Save HJTInstall.exe to your desktop.
Doubleclick on the HJTInstall.exe icon on your desktop.
By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis .
Click on Install.
It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
Once installed, it will launch Hijackthis.
Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
DO NOT have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

A:desktop is blank

When you press CTRL+ALT+DEl you should see a menu, one item would be to start the Task Manager. In Task Manager go up to File/New Task (Run) and type explorer.exe and press enter. Your desktop should appear. If that doesn't work,
Boot off of the Windows Disc Or download the Recovery Console ISO. Burn it to CD with IMGBurn Boot off of the CD and get to the Recovery Console. Here type chkdsk /R and press enter. The Check Disk utility will try and fix any file errors.
You can also download the ISO image for Drive Fitness Test in my signature and burn the image to a CD using IMGBurn also in my signature and boot off of the newly created CD and run the Quick and Advanced tests on the HDD to test the integrity of the drive.

It sounds like explorer.exe isn't running, but the only way I know how to start it back up is to use ctrl+alt+delete to run it. Try restarting and pressing F8 as your computer starts back up and choose safe mode from the menu that it brings you to.

And I use AVG.

Hey, its been a loooong time since I've had to come on here, so much so I've had to re register. Ah well, I'm at my wits end with my laptop

I was watching Southpark, as you do, on my laptop with Windows Live Messenger open chatting to my friends, the internet on myspace, and all of a sudden I get a message from Norton saying that I've a infection and I need to insert Windows XP support disc 2. I've never heard of such a disc, nor do I own one. Anyway, I closed the message, and bang, another appears, close that another, and another and so on.

The message was totally unexpected and i did nothing out of the ordinary on my laptop to trigger this.

So I get fed up of this and go to start and restart.

The machine kicks up, only thing is, theres nothing on my desktop, and the start bar is missing, the only thing its is showing is my backdrop. I press the windows key on my keyboard expecting for the start menu to appear but theres nothing.

All my applications and data is there, and they are running fine. I've used the windows task manager to open Internet explorer which is how I'm talking I ran norton, did a full virus sweep and delete, restarted my computer but the problem is still there, no task bar, no icons on my desktop. Its doing my head in.

Please, if you can help I'd be very very grateful. If you help, Father Christmas will give you double presents :-D

Oh and Merry Christmas to all who read this.

Ok, so I installed windows updates, and restarted my computer and the windows login box appears. I didn't set up a password, because it's mostly used by my parents and they didn't want one. But, I don't know why that is popping up either. Anyway, I clicked on the ok button for the password, and waited for my desktop icons to load, and they never did. There are no icons, no taskbar, nothing. I also got a error that says, "windows explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close." I have no idea what is wrong, but hopefully someone can help me resolve it. Thanks.

I have access to a PC with Intel Celeron MMX 333
MHz processor, 32 MB RAM, 4.117 GB HDD(3.268 GB free) &
Windows 98 Second Edition with year 2000 updates.

My problem is that after opening an application
and after going a little deeper into it
(working with its various functions) when i close
it & return to the desktop it is all blank
(the icons disappear ). Only the taskbar
is visible with the application shown as open and the
mouse-pointer moves if i move it ,but there's no
other response(even warm-booting doesn't work)

I have removed unnecessary start-up programs,cleaned the
disk and even defragged it but to no avail. The system-
information gives the system-resources as 97% free.
Please tell me what can i do?

Thank you.
