I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi, welcome to TSF

See here for details on posting your full system specs.

To increase your virtual memory, right-click My Computer, select Properties, click the Advanced tab and then Settings in the Performance section. Click the Advanced tab and then Change under the Virtual Memory section. What are the initial and maximum settings?

Also, right-click the C: drive in Windows Explorer and select Properties to see how much free space is left on the drive.

Have you defragged the drive lately?

I have changed the settings on my virtual memory to 3500 and also upgraded to 2G of RAM. Yet I am still getting the warning that I am low on virtual memory.

The bigger issue is that programs randomly crash every few hours. Restarting the computer resolves the issue but only temporarily.

The programs that I run daily are basic, Firefox, Outlook and sometimes QuickBooks. The crash happens regardless of what I have open.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

A:Random Crash / Low Virtual Memory

As long as you have 2gb of RAM, you can disable the Virtual Ram.

Go to Control panel > System > Advanced tab > under Performance click on Settings > Advanced tab > under Virtual Ram click on Change > first, click on Custom Settings and set them both to Zero > Set > then click on No Paging File > Set

Hello,

I've been experiencing sluggish performance, browsers were laggy and non responsive after having many tabs.

I found that the solution to improve performance was to change Virtual Memory values and disable "paging file size" for all drives.

Now the computer performance is amazing, everything responds properly but now I'm getting error messages of low memory and getting crashes. A few minutes ago the computer crashed to a black screeen.

Here are the values I have right now in Virtual Memory, what else should I do to stop these crashes? I already tried a few different values but the problem still persists.

Any suggestions?

6 months ago,i upgraded memory from the factory installed 64 to 256. It works, etc.

Is there any additional tweaking/ajustments i can do? i read something with virtual memory setting could be done for one thing.

A:After upgrading memory,its works,Virtual memory Tweaking Now?

Unless you have Win95 you likely donít want to go messing with your virtual memory. And even in that case it is the vcache you would be more interested in tweaking. Win98 and higher handles memory well.

If you watch your system monitor and are sure you arenít using your virtual memory you might do the ConservativeSwapfileUsage=1 INI tweak. Unless you are doing graphics, video editing or something RAM intensive you likely arenít using the virtual memory and the tweak wonít slow your computer. It doesnít speed it up, it just stops needless writes to the hard drive during idle time. Information if you want to do that: http://www.aumha.org/a/memmgmt.htm

Donít let anyone talk you into Cacheman or any of those Mem/RAM/Turbo/Boost type programs. They were written for Win95 and counterproductive in anything since.

My boy's desktop has a low memory warning problem that is a little different than some of the other threads I've read here.  He gets the warning when he plays SWTOR.  Task manager shows about 290 MB of memory in use during play with no leaking.  He has an SSD as the system drive with 140 GB free out of about 240 GB.  After going on the Microsoft boards, I tried to fix the problem by resetting the virtual memory settings to "automatically size paging file" and even a custom setting but the settings won't save following a restart and it always comes back saying that no virtual memory has been allocated.  The PC runs Win8 32 bit with a Core DUO E8400 and 4GB of RAM on the MB.  I'd be grateful for any suggestions/help.

" XP REQUIRES "backing storage" for EVERYTHING it keeps in RAM.
Virtual Memory is always in use.All processess gets virtual memory addresses
(a Virtual Address Space) no matter how much RAM is actually installed on the computer."

"Memory allocation in is a two-step process--virtual memory addresses are reserved first, and committed second...The reservation process is simply a way NT tells the Memory Manager to reserve a block of virtual memory pages to satisfy other memory requests by the process...There are many cases in which an application will want to reserve a large block of its address space for a particular purpose (keeping data in a contiguous block makes the data easy to manage) but might not want to use all of the space."

In other words, that virtual memory to which you refer,is only allocated memory, not necessarily
paged memory.

The thing you really want to know,is the actual pagefile usage.Use this programHERE

If I choose to rais the amount of virtual memory the system uses does this meen that the computer will not show as much Physical Memory or not be able to utalize it?

A:Virtual Memory And Physical Memory

Virtual memory is actually not memory. It is simulated memory area on the HDD. When you are using a lot of virtual memory, your system will actually run slower. HDD access is considerably slower than RAM access. The OS will page memory out to the HDD to make more physical memory available to itself or applications, as needed.

I was running Outlook, AIM, and IE at the same. After a few moment, I'd get this following message:

Your system is low on virtual memory. Windows is increasing the size of your Virtual Memory Paging file. During this process, memory requests for some applications may be denied.

When I hit OK, all my applications would close, except my Outlook. I'm running Win2K with 512 memory. My computer is only 1.5 years old. I didn't play any games or download anything so it's not heavily used. But why the message then?

I ran Spybot, AdAware, and VirusScan just to see if I had any spyware or virus on my computer. None. I also checked the Processes in Task Manager and I didn't see any suspicious applications running. But I noticed that when I ran IE, the memory usage in Task Manager would keep going up (significantly) eventhough I didn't do anything in Explorer.

Can somebody tell me what the problem here? And perhaps a solution for it.
Thank you very much.

Not sure what "it" refers to.

IMO...users should just let XP manage the pagefile size...I have found no advantage from any other arrangement (and I've tried several).

How much RAM is physically installed in this system?

virtual memory is hard drive space allocated by your computer for ram that is unavailable or for page swapping. Generally you do not worry about virtual memory. It is a system function. Generally it is set to automatic from windows. With windows XP, 512MB is the minimum to run an acceptably performing computer. 1gb is highly recommended. With Vista 1gb is the minimum, 2gb is recommended.

I am wondering what my computer should be set at for it's best performance as far as memory usage etc.? Do I set it so the system takes care of it or put in my own amounts? Thanks for your help and sorry if this is not in the proper forum!!
DLBerry

A:Memory Usage/Virtual Memory

Just let the system takes care of it. If you have enough physical memory, you really shouldn't need to worry about it. Virtual memory or Page file, is memory that uses your hard drive. When you have a app or apps that uses more memory than you physical have, the system will alocate space on the hard drive for "virtual memory" or Page File. This is when you notice performance lag on your computer, because the hard drive transfers data at a much slower rate than your memory.

Sir
I do have a question?

We have a space in harddisk ,called virtual memory.  In addition to DRAM ,Operating System  uses this  virtual memory to store and run applications. Virtual memory makes up for the need of space required.

I think that the physical memory DRAM is not needed. Virtual memory inside the hard disk is  sufficient.

By avoiding DRAM we  can save the cost of  physical DRAM. We can also save lot of time that is involved in associating the pages between DRAM and Virtual memory.

Of course , virtual memory provided by the hard disk is slow. But  in current trends we can research , to increase the speed of magnetic drums being used by the harddisk to store data.

Thanks ,
Ramkumar.

According to Microsoft, Windows sets the initial minimum size of the paging file at the amount of random access memory (RAM) installed on your computer plus 300 megabytes (MB), and the maximum size at 3 times the amount of RAM installed on your computer. Windows 7 handles virtual memory differently and more efficiently than previous version of Windows. So I believe most folks recommend you let Windows 7 decide what's best based on your computer usage.

I've tried to disable virtual memory in XP (for speed amongst other things) by setting the page file to 0 for all drives in my system.

However, when I check the task manager it reports "VM Size" as at the same level or higher than "Mem Usage" for all process, e.g. firefox.exe Mem Usage 77,720K and VM Size 118,756K. This is a problem as my RAM (1Gb) seems to be filled up quite quickly because of the additional VM Size requirements - since I'm not using Virtual Memory, VM Size should be zero for all processes. Is this what it should do, or have I disabled Virtual Memory incorrectly? Thanks in advance.

To address the 'virtual memory' warning you could free up some space on your C:drive(default location of paging file) and increase the 'paging file' size to one and a half times( microsoft's recommendation) the total amount of RAM you have installed.

To set the paging file size in XP : right-click "my computer" on "start menu'>properties>Advanced> Performance Settings>Advanced>Virtual Memory.click on Change.

Hope this gets you on the right road.

For some strange reason, all of a sudden whenever i leave my laptop on during the day while im at school and when i open it back up when i get back, i always have a windows alert that: "Your system is low on virtual memory and is updating the memory page"
Also, i am getting the BSOD a lot lately and there is no apparent reason for this. One time, i was playing UT2004 and my laptop just completely froze on me. Whenever this happens i have ot hold the power button on my laptop to manually turn it off, and whenever i try to to boot again, i dont even see the "toshiba or Windows" opening screens and i just end up sitting at a black screen forever, usually having to wait at least a 1/2 hour before the laptop will succesfully boot.
lastly, i have recently started using a program, netlimiter, to control my upload/download rates through my computer and hte program is having a lot of time running, it usually gives a message that "NetLimiter has encountered a problem and needs to close"
If anyone out there can help me out on any of these things, i would greatly appreciate it, and THANK YOU in advance. These forums have never let me down.

My windows 7 machine has 16 Gb of RAM memory, an SSD (vertex 111Gb) disk and 2 WD (1Tb) harddisks.
To save space on my SSD, I was advised to remove my virtual memory, which I did several months ago.
Everything worked fine after that, even Photoshop.
This week I started working with MAGIX which is a filmediting program en I unfortunately had several crashes since then.
I can normally restart my computer after the crash, but find the situation very disturbing.
Could the removal of the virtual memory be the reason?
Is it a good idea to put it back, or what advice could you give me?
If I restore the vm should I let windows organise the size?
If anybody could be of some help, I would be very grateful.
Thanks in advance, Peter Keller

XP uses a lot more resources than ME. Low virtual memory might be an indication that you really need more RAM. How much RAM do you have and how much free space on your hard drive? To what did you change the setting?

John

See here: http://www.techspot.com/vb/post600888-5.html

Or here's a rundown:

Pagefile not set correctly

For Xp: (From here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308417)
1. Click Start, click Run, and then type sysdm.cpl in the Open box.
2. Click the Advanced tab, and then click Settings under Performance.
3. Click the Advanced tab, and then click Change under Virtual memory.
4. Under Drive [Volume Label], click the drive that contains the paging file that you want to change.
5. Under Paging file size for selected drive, click Custom size, type a new paging file size in megabytes (MB) in the Initial size (MB) or Maximum size (MB) box, and then click Set.

For Vista:
click the Start button
click Control Panel
click System and Maintenance
click Performance Information and Tools
click Advanced Tools (in the Tasks pane at the left side of the dialog box)
click Adjust the appearance and performance of Windows.

After answering the User Account Control prompt, you?ll arrive at the
Performance Options dialog box. You?re nearly there

click the Advanced tab, and then click Change.

could be a number of things
1) lack of free disk space
2) virtual memory settings need changing
3) needs more memory for the use he is putting the PC to
4) spyware
5) too many start up programs

1) have a look at the free space left on c drive
3) how much memory on the PC
4) you may need to run ad-aware - spybot - hijackthis log and post here - details posted below
5) run msconfig and see what programs are in start up
start>
run>
msconfig>

1) Install anti virus software
there are free programs available for example AVG from
www.grisoft.com or AVAST from www.avast.com

2)XP has a firewall already
available - to activate it
ON your PC
start>
connect to>
right click on your connection to broadband (this may be lan or usb)
properties>

tick the box - internet connection

see tutorial here

But i suggest also a separate piece of software for a firewall
one of the following two free programs are good

Ocassionally in the past I have had a little balloon pop up in my task bar to say that windows is uping my virtual memory and that some probams may run slowly during this time. This usually happens when I am running program that is quite the memory hog.

My question is what is exactly happening. I assume that it is taking some of my hard drive's memory and changing it into virtual memory. Is this true? And if it is could I do this manually to help speed up a system that doesn't store files locally?

Just curious.

A:Virtual Memory

First of all, you can have a look at Microsoft's RAM, Virtual Memory, Pagefile and all that stuff.

If you receive frequent messages about your os uping your virtual memory, you might also want to have a look here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315270/en-us.

Now, if you really have virtual-memory issues and want to go to the extreme (I mean, beyond going for the obvious option of buying more ram), you can locate your Pagefile in your hdd with the least frequent searches (it has to be a physical hdd), because chances are that there the read-write arm will stay most of the times over your Pagefile, thus accessing your virtual memory in even less time... If you want to do so (and you do have such a spare hdd), go to How To Move the Paging File in Windows XP.

I left my computer for a while. When I got back it had a message that win was low on virtual memory and would be assigning other memory to it. It said that the applications that I would be running might be low on power as it fixed itself???? I had not idea what this meant and just turned off the computer. I turned it back on and the message was not there any more.

Do I have a problem ???? Am I going to crash????

I remember from Windows '98 that the Virtual Memory could be manipulated. A change was made and Windows no longer managed the size, but a pre-determined figure of your choice took over. Is that possible, or even necessary, with XP?

I recently tripled the amount of RAM on my Toshiba laptop by adding a one-gig stick. The machine literally flies now, even with a Celeron chip. Maybe I'm being greedy, but can I do more?

If you want to do the same thing in XP, right-click My Computer and click Properties. Click the Advanced tab and then in Performance click Settings, and the Advanced tab again. In Virtual Memory click the Change button. 'System Managed' is the same a s the old 'Let Windows manage...'.

i am using windows xp service pack 3 and i keep receiving message virtual memory low. how do i fix this?

A:virtual memory

Hello gean

How much RAM (memory) is installed? You might need more, or you might just have to increase the virtual memory.

The virtual memory should be set at 1.5x RAM installed.

Right click ?My Computer?/Properties/Advanced/Performance/Settings.
Click Advanced Tab.
You will see the size at the bottom.

If you need to increase it click the ?Change? button for Virtual Memory
Make both the minimum and maximum values = 1.5 x RAM installed
Click SET
Then OK your way out.
Reboot

Windows 7 64 bit
cpu- i7
Ram- 20 GB
Graphic card- Nvidia Geforce GTX 580
My pc is designed for 3d graphic, good hardware for home 3d graphic use

About virtual memory,
i know this is a subject already debated in many threads however my question is expecially related to 64 bit system with many GB of ram.

I usually move my virtual memory to another hard disk then C where windows is installed, let say disk D ( i have 4 hard disks) custom manage with fix mimimum, maximum size, with my 20 Gb of phisical ram i assign 4 Gb of virtual memory.
Every tutorial suggest to assign 1 and half virtual memory Gb then phisical ram installed, probably most of them are related to 32 bit system cause 64 bit begun popular since windows 7, before not many pc where running 64 bit.
In a system as mine with 20 Gb of phisical ram may assign to virtual memory 30 Gb is not a little to much?
With the above pc speck mentioned and 20 Gb of ram how much virtual fix memory i can assign?

Thank a lot!

A:Virtual memory 64 bit

With 20B of ram, Windows 7 will do little or no swapping so Virtual Memory is not likely to be used at all.

Having said that, why not just let Windows manage it and forget about it or try turning it off and see what happens. If Win 7 needs it, it will use it, even if you have it turned off.

Could someone help with this message. I run Microsoft XP, have a 37.2 GB hard drive and 20.9 GB of free space. The message I keep getting is :

"Your system is low on virtual memory. Windows is increasing the size of your virtual memory paging file. During this process, memory requests for some applications may be denied."

My filing system is NTFS. Could you please tell me how I can either increase my virtual memory or delete some files that I don't need.

I have tried to delete files from my computer by removing them with the ADD/REMOVE programs and also by going into the registry.

I am at a loss of what to do next. If you could help, I would greatly appreciate it.

I am on a PC at school and don't have permission's to go to control panel, but I know that the Virtual memory settings are in there, (think under system) but there is a tab for Virtual memory but at this present time cannot recall exactly what the settings should be set at. Will look and post again unless someone else gets to it first.
