Q: Please Help...Virtual Memory Low...XP crash!

Hi there,

I really hope that somebody can help.

For the past few months my PC has been running very slow and this is especially noticeable on startup! Music quite often will distort/computer will slow right down to the point where it crashes and reboots itself!! I will quite often receive a warning balloon in the bottom-right hand corner of the desktop saying 'virtual memory low'.

Please could somebody provide some assistance...it would be greatly appreciated.

Preferred Solution: Please Help...Virtual Memory Low...XP crash!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi, welcome to TSF

See here for details on posting your full system specs.

To increase your virtual memory, right-click My Computer, select Properties, click the Advanced tab and then Settings in the Performance section. Click the Advanced tab and then Change under the Virtual Memory section. What are the initial and maximum settings?

Also, right-click the C: drive in Windows Explorer and select Properties to see how much free space is left on the drive.

Have you defragged the drive lately?

I have changed the settings on my virtual memory to 3500 and also upgraded to 2G of RAM. Yet I am still getting the warning that I am low on virtual memory.

The bigger issue is that programs randomly crash every few hours. Restarting the computer resolves the issue but only temporarily.

The programs that I run daily are basic, Firefox, Outlook and sometimes QuickBooks. The crash happens regardless of what I have open.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

A:Random Crash / Low Virtual Memory

As long as you have 2gb of RAM, you can disable the Virtual Ram.

Go to Control panel > System > Advanced tab > under Performance click on Settings > Advanced tab > under Virtual Ram click on Change > first, click on Custom Settings and set them both to Zero > Set > then click on No Paging File > Set

Hello,

I've been experiencing sluggish performance, browsers were laggy and non responsive after having many tabs.

I found that the solution to improve performance was to change Virtual Memory values and disable "paging file size" for all drives.

Now the computer performance is amazing, everything responds properly but now I'm getting error messages of low memory and getting crashes. A few minutes ago the computer crashed to a black screeen.

Here are the values I have right now in Virtual Memory, what else should I do to stop these crashes? I already tried a few different values but the problem still persists.

Any suggestions?

6 months ago,i upgraded memory from the factory installed 64 to 256. It works, etc.

Is there any additional tweaking/ajustments i can do? i read something with virtual memory setting could be done for one thing.

A:After upgrading memory,its works,Virtual memory Tweaking Now?

Unless you have Win95 you likely donít want to go messing with your virtual memory. And even in that case it is the vcache you would be more interested in tweaking. Win98 and higher handles memory well.

If you watch your system monitor and are sure you arenít using your virtual memory you might do the ConservativeSwapfileUsage=1 INI tweak. Unless you are doing graphics, video editing or something RAM intensive you likely arenít using the virtual memory and the tweak wonít slow your computer. It doesnít speed it up, it just stops needless writes to the hard drive during idle time. Information if you want to do that: http://www.aumha.org/a/memmgmt.htm

Donít let anyone talk you into Cacheman or any of those Mem/RAM/Turbo/Boost type programs. They were written for Win95 and counterproductive in anything since.

My boy's desktop has a low memory warning problem that is a little different than some of the other threads I've read here.  He gets the warning when he plays SWTOR.  Task manager shows about 290 MB of memory in use during play with no leaking.  He has an SSD as the system drive with 140 GB free out of about 240 GB.  After going on the Microsoft boards, I tried to fix the problem by resetting the virtual memory settings to "automatically size paging file" and even a custom setting but the settings won't save following a restart and it always comes back saying that no virtual memory has been allocated.  The PC runs Win8 32 bit with a Core DUO E8400 and 4GB of RAM on the MB.  I'd be grateful for any suggestions/help.

" XP REQUIRES "backing storage" for EVERYTHING it keeps in RAM.
Virtual Memory is always in use.All processess gets virtual memory addresses
(a Virtual Address Space) no matter how much RAM is actually installed on the computer."

"Memory allocation in is a two-step process--virtual memory addresses are reserved first, and committed second...The reservation process is simply a way NT tells the Memory Manager to reserve a block of virtual memory pages to satisfy other memory requests by the process...There are many cases in which an application will want to reserve a large block of its address space for a particular purpose (keeping data in a contiguous block makes the data easy to manage) but might not want to use all of the space."

In other words, that virtual memory to which you refer,is only allocated memory, not necessarily
paged memory.

The thing you really want to know,is the actual pagefile usage.Use this programHERE

<<If i change Virtual memory paging file size to minimum size of 4096mb and maximum size of 4096, my physical ram is only 512mb ddr2 400hz. Is it ok or not?>>

Not sure what "it" refers to.

IMO...users should just let XP manage the pagefile size...I have found no advantage from any other arrangement (and I've tried several).

How much RAM is physically installed in this system?

virtual memory is hard drive space allocated by your computer for ram that is unavailable or for page swapping. Generally you do not worry about virtual memory. It is a system function. Generally it is set to automatic from windows. With windows XP, 512MB is the minimum to run an acceptably performing computer. 1gb is highly recommended. With Vista 1gb is the minimum, 2gb is recommended.

I was running Outlook, AIM, and IE at the same. After a few moment, I'd get this following message:

Your system is low on virtual memory. Windows is increasing the size of your Virtual Memory Paging file. During this process, memory requests for some applications may be denied.

When I hit OK, all my applications would close, except my Outlook. I'm running Win2K with 512 memory. My computer is only 1.5 years old. I didn't play any games or download anything so it's not heavily used. But why the message then?

I ran Spybot, AdAware, and VirusScan just to see if I had any spyware or virus on my computer. None. I also checked the Processes in Task Manager and I didn't see any suspicious applications running. But I noticed that when I ran IE, the memory usage in Task Manager would keep going up (significantly) eventhough I didn't do anything in Explorer.

Can somebody tell me what the problem here? And perhaps a solution for it.
Thank you very much.

If I choose to rais the amount of virtual memory the system uses does this meen that the computer will not show as much Physical Memory or not be able to utalize it?

A:Virtual Memory And Physical Memory

Virtual memory is actually not memory. It is simulated memory area on the HDD. When you are using a lot of virtual memory, your system will actually run slower. HDD access is considerably slower than RAM access. The OS will page memory out to the HDD to make more physical memory available to itself or applications, as needed.

Sir
I do have a question?

We have a space in harddisk ,called virtual memory.  In addition to DRAM ,Operating System  uses this  virtual memory to store and run applications. Virtual memory makes up for the need of space required.

I think that the physical memory DRAM is not needed. Virtual memory inside the hard disk is  sufficient.

By avoiding DRAM we  can save the cost of  physical DRAM. We can also save lot of time that is involved in associating the pages between DRAM and Virtual memory.

Of course , virtual memory provided by the hard disk is slow. But  in current trends we can research , to increase the speed of magnetic drums being used by the harddisk to store data.

Thanks ,
Ramkumar.

I am wondering what my computer should be set at for it's best performance as far as memory usage etc.? Do I set it so the system takes care of it or put in my own amounts? Thanks for your help and sorry if this is not in the proper forum!!
DLBerry

A:Memory Usage/Virtual Memory

Just let the system takes care of it. If you have enough physical memory, you really shouldn't need to worry about it. Virtual memory or Page file, is memory that uses your hard drive. When you have a app or apps that uses more memory than you physical have, the system will alocate space on the hard drive for "virtual memory" or Page File. This is when you notice performance lag on your computer, because the hard drive transfers data at a much slower rate than your memory.

XP uses a lot more resources than ME. Low virtual memory might be an indication that you really need more RAM. How much RAM do you have and how much free space on your hard drive? To what did you change the setting?

Right click My Computer and select Properties. Click the Advanced tab. Click Settings under the Performance section. In the window that loads click the Advanced tab. From there click Change under the Virtual Memory subsection. Fill in the bubble that says System Managed Size and hit ok.

This should allow windows to adjust your virtual memory depending on how much it needs.

edit: this could be the sign of a virus infection, or a plethora of unecessary programs running...especially if it is already set to system managed size.

Hello, I am new to this site so please bare with me. I keep getting a message that says my Virtual Memory is low but I have only used 20GB out of 40GB so I am wondering what the problem is. How can I increase my Virtual memory? thanks

A:Virtual Memory Low

Hi there, looks like your mixing up your hard disk storage with virtual memory.

Lets get some info here, how much RAM do you have in your machine? If your running XP right click on 'My Computer' and select properties, the general tab should show you how much ram you have. Rule of thumb for how much virtual memory one needs in their PC is 1.5 to 2.0 times your real memory.

So lets say your PC has 512 MB or RAM, you should have 718MB of Virtual memory available to your PC. Now lets take that same window I had you pull up a moment ago and click on the Advanced tab. Click on the settings button for Performance, that should open your performance options window. Click on the advanced tab here, then you will see Virtual memory. It will then tell you the total paging file size (this is typically called the pagefile).

Using my example you should see a value of 718 or bigger. If you need to change or adjust it click on the change button. Now you will see a list of volumes on your machine and which one's have (a part of) the pagefile. If 'System managed size' is used then you won't be able to make changes, and if 'No paging file' is checked then it's probably why you keep getting this message. If you select 'custom size' you can then modify the size accordingly. Assuming you only have one volume, C:\ then set initial size as '718' and the maximum size as '1024', or you could leave it the same as the initial s... Read more

I have been recieveing low virtual memory warnings due to Windows Media Player running, when it has not been running to my knowledge.
Why is this happening and what can I do to fix the situation?

A:Low Virtual Memory

It may be set to be a startup....Download Autoruns for Windows: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinte...s/bb963902.aspxNo installation required.Simply unzip Autoruns.zip file, and double click on autoruns.exe file to run the program.Go File>Save, and save it as AutoRuns.txt file to know location. You must select Text from drop-down menu as a file type: Attach the file to your next reply.

I'm told my virtual memory may be low when I play games and then the game just shuts off. I tried to search for virtual memory but all I get is a definition which is Greek to me. WinXP doesn't really tell me how to set it, fix it or what exactly "it" is! Please, what is it and how do I get more?

1. I have Windows XP Professional Version 5.1 and am low on virtual memory. I am also a 'technopeasant' so am concerned about screwing up my computer without knowing what I am doing. I see all sorts of Quick Fix sites out there but don't know which are safe to use. If someone has advice here I would appreciate it?

2. I also went into Microsoft Support and found a self fix option but when I get to the step where it says "change the Initial size value and the Maximum size value to a higher value" I haven't a clue as to how much I should change it by. The Initial and Maximum are currently set at 960 and 1920.

So I'm looking for advise on which fix I should use and what steps to take? Don't know what I'd do without this forum. Everyone is so helpful and I really appreciate it....!

Hi
Just managed to drag my son off the computer and a window came up telling me that the virtual memory was low. In the "Computer Management (Local) Properties" section it says my "Total Paging File Size For All Drives" is 900MB (the recommended is 766MB). Should I increase it and if so to what? Bear in mind my son is forever playing things like Battlefield 2142, Warhammer 40,00 Dawn of War, Star Wars Republic Commando etc...Also these quite often freeze or take ages to shut down. Advice much appreciated!

A:Virtual Memory Low

Your virtual memory should be set at 2.5 times the total physical memory (RAM) you have in your system. Windows XP is recommended to have at least 512Mb RAM to run and I would say 1Gb for users wanting to play games etc.

If the system has an AGP graphics card there is a setting in the BIOS allowing your physical memory to be used as texture memory for games or graphics intensive programs. I would say (others might disagree) the 'AGP Aperture', as it is known, should be set to 1/8th the physical memory you have (set to 128Mb for 1Gb RAM) and then adjusted based on the performance of games or programs and the available RAM.

What is the most effective way to configure virtual memory?

A:Virtual memory

Hello smirk,

If you have enough hard drive space, I find letting the page file stay managed by the system works best.

If your Windows drive is a HDD, then moving the page file to another separate HDD will allow for a bit more performance.

If your Windows drive is a SSD, then it's fine to leave the page file on it.

Hi - a message from widows comes up regularly to say that we have very little virtual memory available. Now, when i do an image search, few images appear -lots of spaces etc. Also some sites after clicking on will not come in.It started when we had a lightning storm. Electricity went off. we had to change the modem as we could not go online.perhaps that was just a coincidence. Still struggling, any ideas?

Hello guys.
Please tell me if i proced corect with my virtual memory setup
I have to harddrives. C and D is the first one, with the OS and other stuff, and E is the second harddrive.
As you can see in the image, please tell me if it's right.
I have 3 GB DDR ram
Thanks

A:virtual memory

Those settings should be fine - if Windows crashes you won't be able to get a kernel dump with a paging file on C: that small, but for a desktop machine that should be fine (you can always change the setting and try again a second time if it's really necessary). In fact, since you have a properly sized paging file on E:, I'm not sure there's a need for one on C: if you're going to keep it that small.

hi everyone i have windows 7 x64 with core i5 , 4gb ram , and radeon hd6570 video : and i had an advice to turnoff the paging file to improve the performance : is that truth

A:about virtual memory

Hello Zoro,

That's absolutely false. In fact, in would most likely hurt performance by turning it off. Some programs actually require the page file to run properly no matter how much RAM you have installed. You could move the page file to be located on a separate physical hard drive than the one your Windows 7 is installed on for some better performance though.

A:Virtual memory too low?

See here: http://www.techspot.com/vb/post600888-5.html

Or here's a rundown:

Pagefile not set correctly

For Xp: (From here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308417)
1. Click Start, click Run, and then type sysdm.cpl in the Open box.
2. Click the Advanced tab, and then click Settings under Performance.
3. Click the Advanced tab, and then click Change under Virtual memory.
4. Under Drive [Volume Label], click the drive that contains the paging file that you want to change.
5. Under Paging file size for selected drive, click Custom size, type a new paging file size in megabytes (MB) in the Initial size (MB) or Maximum size (MB) box, and then click Set.

For Vista:
click the Start button
click Control Panel
click System and Maintenance
click Performance Information and Tools
click Advanced Tools (in the Tasks pane at the left side of the dialog box)
click Adjust the appearance and performance of Windows.

After answering the User Account Control prompt, you?ll arrive at the
Performance Options dialog box. You?re nearly there

click the Advanced tab, and then click Change.

I've looked through "Help" and can find no mention of virtual memory.

How do I restore virtual memory to whatever it was when I bought the machine a year and a half ago!!???
I have an IBM Netvista 2292, with WinXP. Still have 23.0gb of disk space out of 29.8gb capacity.

I Have the same problem on WINDOWS XP PRO, like when I try to copy my wallpaper from my desktop to the basic paint program in windows by using the "print screeen" button on the keyboard, it takes almost 5 minutes to load the image on to paint. Then a message says that windows virtual memory too low.

Here is my memory statistics:

I have 4.21 GB used and 11.7 GB free. Can't seem to figure it out???

Also when Windows starts up, my wallpaper immediately displays, then the image suddenly goes black for at least 10 seconds, then displays again finally.??? I used Disk defrag and cleanup, still no help.

Can someone help me?

THANKS!!!

A:virtual memory is low...??????

hmm.....so you have 4gigs used and 11gigs free. seems like an old computer. how much ram do you have? you can try changing the virtual memory by right clicking on my computer -> click on properties -> advanced -> performance settings -> click on the advance tab -> and in the virtual memory section, click on change.

here is a good article about page file which is another name for virtual memory:

I just built myself a new system and with 16GB of memory, I have turned off the virtual memory. It seems to me that real memory is faster than swapping things back and forth from a hard drive and it should save wear and tear on the hard drive. Maybe the operating system only uses the pagefile if it runs out of real memory?

You can turn off virtual memory with 16Gb installed, but at some point your PC may crash if it needs more than 16GB (HD video editing, 3D design software, games, concurrent VMs, etc...), or if a program needs to specifically use the page file, so I would never turn it off to be fair. I would set initial size to 1GB and maximum to 4GB in your case.
