Is there a work around if Win7 x32 setup file wont work on Win7 x64

Q: Is there a work around if Win7 x32 setup file wont work on Win7 x64

HI,

I have dictionary called the Unified Medical dictionary English-Arabic

anyway, i have the ISO file
i installed it on Win7 x32 with no problem

but i tried to install it on Winx64 but it says an error like "the setup file is not compatible with Win7 x64"

I tried to search for the x64 version but i had no success, google sometimes becomes lame u know....
I tried to just copy the already installed dictionary folders to Win7x64 but it didnt open cuz it seems that it needs to be installed

So is there any way to like edit that setup.exe file or something to work on x64 version cuz it seems if i can just bypass that step it will work

or like a work around the "copy whole folders" and get it to work
I really need some help with it,
thanks in advance,
Elsayed,

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Is there a work around if Win7 x32 setup file wont work on Win7 x64

sometimes 32 bit applications have 16 bit installer and that won 't work on 64 bit system, but if this is not the case did you try to run installer in compatibility mode? (right click/properties/compatibility). Installer generally does three things: creates program directory, copies some DLL files to system directory and writes some data into registry. You could trace those things in Win32 installation and try manually recreate this on 64bit machine, but who knows if it will work. Also search for portable version, those don't require installation and frankly now a days I don't use anything else but portable applications unless there is no other way.

Hi

I'm in a real mess since Lavasoft AdAware crashed my windows 7 home premium edit. 64bit after its 1st initial mandatory reboot. Everything is frozen, nothing can be clicked on or done in any way, shape or form. Even 'Esc' and 'Ctrl-Alt-Del wont work. PC must be shutdown manually. It also wont uninstall in safe mode. Once in safe mode the 1st time I got windows telling me that it cant uninstall this software in safe mode (this was done by its own uninstaller, and by the windows one, and by the Revo Pro uninstaller.) the 2nd time (reboot) it told me it wasnt installed properly. the 3d time it can't install in safe mode again. What now please? Anyone have an idea?

Thank you

A:Lavasoft AdAware crashed win7-Ctrl-alt-del wont work & it wont uninstall in safe mode

Sorry solved it. I'll write the answer should anyone need it someday. I believe my solution can help for other similar cases besides Ad-Aware.
A minute after I posted this a thought came to mind: Go into safe Mode and use msconfig.exe. So I ran it and unchecked everything to do with Ad-Aware. TO be even more sure I checked off not to run also other things that I knew would not be needed like anything to do with Apple, or Adobe. Afterwhich, doing a proper reboot Windows did actually start normally--no crash and I was able to uninstall it. Slowly I put back other services and start-up items and all is working fine now--so far at least ;-) Thanks for those who took a look and I hope it will help some people in the future.

Hello there all,

I re-formated my pc to windows 7 ultimate. My sound refuses to work. It worked fine on xp, but on windows 7 it doesnt? In device manager, the sound device displays normally without a question mark because the driver is installed.

Its realtek AC '97 drivers, and its for my motherbords on board sound. I have tried for the past 3 days to figure out why it isnt working, but with no luck at all. Its really irritating not being able to listen to any music on my pc.

Notes:

1) The sound is not muted
2) the driver was installed
3) device manager doesnt display a question mark
4) the sound appears to play in media players eg. winamp, wmp, wmpc etc etc
5) i have audio codecs installed... didnt help at all.
6) even though the sound plays i hear nothing
7) the speakers ARE on and ARE working - tried other speakers too
8) volume is up on media players
9) speakers are plugged into the right jacks

So that should about cover the list of expected questions from the answers list i hope...

If anyone could give me a solution to this, i would be most greatful!!

Thanks in advance!

After I've installed Win7. I had to install my Radeon HD 6990M and it went smoothly..

Thou, Windows is telling me my graphic device is working proberly I'm still having issues with Auro and some games.
I've tried troubleshooting, but all I've got was an error telling me that card doesn't support DirectX 9.0... even it has DirectX 11.0 Evolved.

Typically when a pc isn't running on a graphic card you can see it by moving different Windows around, cause it leaves some kind of trail and that is exactly what happens for me atm.
Anyone know how to solve this? I would very much appreciate it.

I have an HP laptop nc6400 running Windows 7 SP1. I am having problems with the CD player - it doesn't recognize any CDs I put in! When I try to put in a CD, it ejects the drive and comes up with the message "Please insert a disk".

I have a Win7 SP1 (burned) disk. When I put in this disk, and boot from CD drive, it launches the Windows 7 install program. I select the "repair" option, and repair startup files. It completes without errors. (This is the same disk that wasn't recognized once in Win7).

Someone recently replaced the CD player with a different one - both players had the same problem (it is now a HL-DT-ST RW/DVD GCC-4247N ATA Device). I've tried updating the driver (in Device Manager) and even uninstalled it and had it re-discovered and installed.

When I run SFC /SCANNOW from the boot DOS prompt, it says "No errors".

When I log into Win7 and run SFC /SCANNOW from an elevated command prompt it says there were files that were corrupted but unable to fix. I created the SFCDETAILS file, but searching for "fail", "corrupt" and "unable" yields 0 results, so I don't know what files are corrupt.

I'm not a hardware person, and this is a work computer, so I have limited ability to do anything hardware-wise. But considering the DVD player works to boot from, but doesn't work once logged into Windows, I'm thinking it's a software problem (but don't know what the problem is).

Any suggestions would be g... Read more

A:Can boot with Win7 DVD but once logged into Win7 CD doesn't work

Hmmm... no comments... I think I posted a doozie!

As an update - I was able to successfully burn a CD on the drive. I located an ISO file and burned it to a CD-R. I heard the 'whirring' for a few minutes, it said it was done and ejected the drive. I looked at the CD and it appears to be written to. I look at the drive in Windows Explorer, and it shows D: is a CD-R with 360MB free of 702MB. Hurray! However, when I double click D to open it, it shows "Files Ready to Be Written to the Disk" - Desktop.ini, and no other files. I can't run D:\setup.exe (windows can't find d:\setup.exe). So something is not right...

I put my Microsoft Keyboard/Mouse CD in the drive, and Windows Explorer doesn't recogonize it (Please insert a disk).

I ran Microsoft Fixit for playing CDs, and it said it couldn't find any errors.

Does this illuminate the problem any further?

I just purchased an HP Pavilion 20 All-In-One desktop computer that unfortunately had Windows 8 on it - I needed a computer immediately and no one in town had an all in one with 7 pro. I purchased Windows 7 Pro SP1 64 bit OEM software (from reputable store; computer is 64bit) and thought it would be an easy install - insert disk, follow directions. It acts as if it's installing windows 7, but when it gets to the screen which shows the language, time and - forgot the last drop down choice, I don't have use of the mouse or keyboard. I can't tab, use arrow keys, or anything. I have spent hours searching online before bothering anyone for free advice, but now I'm looking for free advice. Any help is greatly appreciated.
Also, do I post this in Windows 7 Pro or 8 ?

I just want to confirm this won't be a problem when I come to it.

I'm gonna back up my files and do a fresh install of win 7 on my desktop (same computer and motherboard) since it's been about 3 years and i want a fresh start again.

I originally got it with no os and used an upgrade win 7 pro x64; I seem to remember i installed it once and it wouldn't accept the key so i installed again and it worked (double install trick i presume).

Assuming I now download the iso for win 7 pro x64, burn it, boot, custom install, format drive and install with original product key it work yes?

I'm prob just being paranoid but I though i would confirm on here first

Thanks guys

If you have a valid Key, it should be accepted. Don't enter your Key until you have the install complete and are happy with it. You can then enter the Key and activate online. Sometimes instead of accepting the Key, it gives you a phone number at Microsoft to call. It isn't a big deal, it is just a recorded message asking some questions. Let us know how you come out.

So I finally finished my new build and got everything up and running but I cant seem to get Windows Aero to work. I can select the theme for Aero, but can't get any of the effects. I found a thread on here, http://www.techspot.com/vb/topic151340.html , that had the same exact problem, but not sure what he did to fix it. I also only have the 15 check boxes. My system specs are;

Intel i7 950

Windows 7 64-bit

Not sure if anything else is needed. I've already updated windows, made sure I have all the latest drivers and even tried to force Aero to work by doing what was told here; http://www.mydigitallife.info/2009/01/13/hack-to-force-enable-aero-in-windows-7/

You can install it, but it is legal only if there was a valid OS on there before.

If it was an expired RC, it qualifies. If it was a pirated version of Windows, it doesn't.

Windows Media Player 12 came with my Win7 computer, and I have had it for over 2 years, but have had multiple problems with the player. I cannot play music from the program itself, but the music will play from here....
.
So this makes me believe the files themselves are not corrupted. Not sure why it won't play when I open the program. I am wondering if I need to reinstall the program? I went to Microsoft website downloads page and there doesn't seem to be a way to download it from there. Not sure I need to reinstall, but that seems to me to be the only option. Any ideas?

One note: I recently deleted iTunes because I don't like that program, and transferred all my music to WMP. The music you see in the screenshot above was from iTunes and it plays from the list above but not when I open WMP program. Even the music that was already in WMP does not play properly. I can start playing one song, but it won't go to the next song when I click on one. It just plays the previous song it was playing.

A:Win7 WinMedPlay won't work.

I just found out that my VLC media player works! ...for music, movies, and even pictures! Awesome! I hadn't tried that program in a long time. I just downloaded an update for it. I have tried to find an update for WMP, but can't find one available. I'd still like to get that program working again.

Just a thought....
My computer is refurbished. Could it be that WMP was not on my computer when I got it? Is it possible it came (downloaded) from my old XP machine and now won't work on my Win7 machine? It is WMP12 as far as I know, but I "think" that is what I had on my XP too, but not sure.

I've posted elsewhere here about my Win7 upgrade. I run a Dell XPS 420. Upgraded to Win7 x64 Ultimate (no regrets overall - love it!). But my SoundBlaster X-Fi Extreme Audio would no longer record "What U Hear." Creative admitted that X-Fi Audio cards will not record What U Hear under Win7. They suggested I get a Titanium, which I did. Just installed it.

I used the newest drivers and software from the Creative site. They tell you to first run the Product ID tool to ensure the PC will recognize the SB card.

No go. The PID utility gives an error -- tells me I'm not running Win7! (My Win7 is legal tender...)

It won't take the new Win7 drivers, either. It makes like they installed just fine and tells me to reboot... but checking Device Driver, there's no SB. Doing Run/msinfo32 shows NO SoundBlaster as well.

I'm really fed up with Creative. Has anyone solved this? Anyone running a SB Titanium (I have the vanilla unit, not Fatality - model SB0880) under Win7 x64 successfully? If yes, how did you install it? Hardware first, then software or vice versa or what?

Thanks for ANY insight/advice!

What Product ID tool? Can you post an image?

I'm running the X-Fi Titanium Fatal1ty Professional without issue under W7 x64.

Try this - Install everything from the CD first, then use the Creative Auto Update panel to update all the software you chose to install.

I had "weird" issues installing the software myself untill I installed from the CD first.

I have a problem with Windows 7, I'll start from the beginning:

Using Smarty Uninstaller I removed some game yesterday. After removing I stopped the program and I removed the "remnants" with the command "Force uninstall" (do not know if this has any connection, but this was the last thing I did with the computer). After that I turned off Smarty Uninstaller and I noticed that all icons on the Start bar disappeared and when I refreshed it all the icons on the desktop also disappeared. When I tried to use the Control Panel it displayed a message like "It refers to a component that is not installed (...)", plus some details, which I can not remember. I thought that after the reboot everything will be back to normal, but it turned out that on the login screen instead of user names and any inscriptions are some strange strings such as squares, circles, hearts, etc. When I try to log in, it displays a message written with these symbols and return to the login screen. In Safe Mode I can log in, but there are those symbols istead of letters and I can not run anything.

Can I somehow fix it without using the method of formatting? : P I've had a couple of important files on the desktop and I need it back.

Let me add that the system is original, and the equipment is

A:Win7 doesn't work (I can't log in).

Try a System Restore to a time before you uninstalled the game.

You might then try Revo Uninstaller to do the uninstall a second time---or just uninstall through Programs and Features in Control Panel. I have never heard of Smarty Uninstaller and it may have caused some problems.

I have read numerous forums on here and other sites. I keep finding posts that are old and relating to Vista.

I tried the downloads from Epson site and from posting suggestions and was able to get the Scan option to work, BUT NOT the Smart Panel portion. Which is where the Copy Utility and OCR functions are, among other functions. I need these to work. The buttons on scanner don't work either.

Really don't want to buy new scanner, as I like the way this one works for photo restore and it was pricey, as I have the auto photo feeder attachment.

Well, looking at the Epson driver list for your scanner, it only has 64-bit software for the ICM color profile.

Everything else is for Windows 7 32-bit.

In the absence of any other ideas I think you're faced with getting a scanner that is compatible with Windows 7 64-bit.

Does that sound like it's how it is going to work? Thanks

Yes, The Downloadable file will be an ISO image that can be easily written to a DVD.

I want several Icons to work on Win7. On XP I use several Icons to make it easier keep track of Folders and not need to read what it says under the folders. It is difficult to find a way to use Icons on Win7. I have been using Icons from ICONS.DLL and PIFMGR.DLL. I cannot use these Icons in Win7. I can use Foods and Cartoons Icons. These are not what I had in mind. I checked SHELL32.dll and imageres.dll and both seem to be part of Windows. I do not see anything in there that fits what I want. I have Googled Icons and also do not find much of what I want. Icons.dll and pifmgr.dll in XP is closer to what I want. I do not know how to find anything even close, like that, to working on WIN7. I would appreciate any help.

A:Icons do not work on Win7

Well, if you have access to a computer with XP installed, you could copy the icons.dll and pifmgr.dll files over to your Win7 box, and use them.

I have done the reverse of this before, and it worked (copying shell32.dll and imageres.dll to an XP machine).

Hi Gang

Below is a screenshot of some errors in my pc. The functions listed at the bottom of the page like screensaver or desktop background etc just continue to load - and load and load etc and never do anything. I have tried a Win7 repair install but for some reason it says my version is incompatible with my disk. It is the same disk. I'm using Home Premium Sp1.

I have a dual boot drive. My specs are in the pc icon above. I have run a chkdsk from the D drive which is Winxp. No joy.

Win7 (32-bit) Screensaver not working. Intel DG31PR 775 Socket with integrated LAN and Sound. Dual core processor. 4gig memory.

I've read everything I could find on this problem, but none of the answers in Forums online have helped and I'm hoping one of your faithful has a solution. Here's my story.

I have installed Win7 using Update from Vista Basic, and, the Custom install from WinXP. The screensavers work fine in both before Win7 install, but under both setups when I start Win7 Home Premium with just the basic OS installed the screensaver doesn't work.

Things I've tried:
- Clean Boot
- Unchecked the setting for the network card to "Allow this device to wake the computer."
- Turned off the setting in the BIOS to wake the computer
- Disconnected the USB Optical mouse and plugged in a PS-2
- Keyboard is PS-2
- Disconnected all USBs
- Shutoff the Background Slide Show
- Set Microsoft Default Screensaver to begin in one minute - Screensaver previews fine, but won't envoke itself
- Disconnected PCI cards
- I have the Power Options set to ?Balanced? Turn off display in 10 minutes & Put computer to sleep in 30 minutes
- Installed all the latest Updates from Microsoft for Win7
- Put a checkmark in front of "On resume, display logon screen" as some advised online
- Checked the Power Management tab, the setting to allow this device to wake the computer was already unchecked. But in the Advanced tab, there is an entry called... Read more

Sounds to me like you need to perform a clean install of Windows 7, as you have upgraded to many times which can cause issues and confusion.

Hey. Since my last computer is broken...and seems beyond repair. I'm in the market for a new computer. Of course as a student I'm low on money. Though I still want it to be worth it. So with the current prices I was thinking $1000-$1200 AUD.

I didn't come across any other posts. and I can only assume this is the right board.
I was wondering if anyone out there has done any tests or has any recommendations for parts and or brands that might be better to run Windows 7 with. Whether it be for future options or if that some brands are simply just not performing like they once did.

There is so much information out there its hard to keep up with current tech when you're so busy.

A:What new parts work best with Win7?

The best parts depends on what you want to do with your PC. Gamer? Video editor? Office type work only? Social website/Twitter interface?

Let's start with - Where do you want to go today?

I am setting a new Win7 64 bit with the intent of passing file content from the pervious XP to Win7 homenet network for my two machines connected via ethernet.

The previous setup.

Computer MSI

Was running Win XP.

Computer Biostar

Is running Win7

The network connection is primarily with the Public folder in an XP workgroup.
This has worked fine for passing files both ways on the homenet.

Computer MSI will be installed to a new WD 1 Tb drive

I know the the primary network style in Win7 is called a Share group and is different from
the XP workgroup.

To keep my network going and share files I intend to continue the XP work group
for compatibility because this has worked.

How can the Public folder by copied or moved to the newer Win7 sharegroup on both
machines which will now have Win7? Is there a naming convention that can simply rename
the Public folder on the network? Or is it even necessary for some advantage?

My XP drive is still available and backed up. The new install will format the the WD and
put on Win7 to the full volume for the MSI machine. The Biostar computer name is

***-PC where the asters are used for privacy on this message.

Just now I am beginning the process.

Hello all, I tried as best I could to search on this and saw a few similar threads but still cant get this to work right.

As the tittle says, I have a HP desktop that came with Vista, I partitioned my C drive (which already had a small partition from HP for the recovery stuff labeled D and made a "S" drive for the Win7 install.

I installed the copy of Win7 i made from the official ISO from MS and it works ok as long as the DVD is still in the drive...it asks to press any key to boot from cd or DVD, I leave it alone then my option screen comes up and I can pick from either vista or win7 just fine. If the DVD is NOT in the drive then the options I have are either vista or "Windows Setup" and in that case I get

File: \$WINDOWS..~BT\Windows\System32\winload.exe

Status: 0xc000000f
selected entry couuld not be loaded cuz missing or corrupt

I tried to do the automatic reapair in the WIN7 installer and sometimes it would come up as finding an error and says it fixed but most of the time it says there is nothing wrong.

Here is what I get from EasyBCD

Hello
i have just bought a totally new setup today, and ive plugged and mounted everything into the chassi.. but i dont get a video signal from it, when i plug in the screen into the pc it just goes from "check cable connection" to "no video input" and nothing happens.. all the fans from the cpu, chassi and grafic card are running, and all lighs and LEDīs are working.. just no picture at all (and therefor not much i can do). ive tried using the sceen with another computer and it works fine.

since its brand new i havent even gotten to install windows on it yet so im 100% sure its something with the hardware/seetup offcourse..

after checking all the power cables i couldnt find anything wrong with what i had done.. so i took the motherboard out of the chassi to be sure it wasnt hitting it in any way.. i also tried with an old Geforce 9600 grafic card from my old pc to see if that would work, but it had the same result.

then i decided to try and set it up so i had minimal things connectet..
so now it have the powersupply plugged in, with power going into the motherboad in 2 places (24pin and 8pin) the cpu is mounted (and plugged into the motherboad in the correct place) the grafic card is set in place in the PCI x16_1 slot and have its two power sources plugged in (8pin and 4pin.. with the 4pin being a special 2 into 1 power plug for ekstra power) and i still get the same result..

i really need help to figuring out this problem please

Sincerely
/ulkan

Hey guys,

I recently switched to Windows 7 not only on my laptop but also on my desktop PC and everything works great apart from one thing - the monitor. It's a Samsung SyncMaster 765MB, a CRT one.

When I was using Windows XP the monitor used to work perfectly fine at 100 hz at 1024 x 768, however:
Now (when using win 7) its maximum refresh rate is 85 hz at the same resolution. It detects it as nothing more than a "Generic Plug&Play monitor"

I have installed the latest drivers for my NVIDIA GeForce 7600 GT and I tried installing the monitor drivers (which are for Win XP) but this turned out to be not quite possible. I tried looking for some Vista/7 drivers but there was no success there as well.

So if any of you guys know a solution to that issue (buying a newer monitor aside), I'd be really grateful.

Cheers!

A:How to get a Samsung CRT monitor to work on 100 hz on Win7

I guess that this is the sad reality - CRT monitors are completely written off and nobody at Microsoft gives a damn about them.

Hi J32! I would upgrade your hardware to 64-bit compatible, as 32-bit is slowly being wiped out (like XP) and 64-bit is getting used more often. The transition from 32 to 64-bit won't be complete till a few years later, but it's best to be futureproof. As for the product keys, 32-bit keys will work just fine with 64-bit. As long as they are the same version (e.g. 32-Bit Home Premium key will only work with 64-Bit Home Premium etc.)

Thanks,

Ok, so I have that problem with the Creative cards where it doesn't play nice with my Nvidia chipset and Win 7 64. Horrible sound when it works at all, clicks and pops and crackles. But most of the time it doesn't work at all.

The sound card in question is the X-fi Platinum I believe, and my mobo is an Asus A8N Deluxe.

I have been totally unable to find any information on decent sound cards that WILL work given my equipment. I would like to find something that provides rich sound similar to the X-fi Platinum. It was great while it lasted. Now I can't even get the crappy onboard sound to work!

Help! I hate having no sound

Welcome to seven forums Pillowfight: Well you have a Nforce 4 board which in it's self is nice to know it is working well with seven. Pending on how much your willing to spend the Xonar sound card has had great reviews and claims to be windows seven ready. Pretty expensive though. And a PCI-e x1 which your board does support. Here I am quoting from MSDN "The IEShowSaveFileDialog function works within these restructions by using a medium integrity broker process (IEUser.exe) to call the Windows Common Dialog library". But under win 7, I couldn't find ieuser.exe. I know ieuser.exe exists under vista but it doesn't exist under win 7, which means the function IEShowSaveFileDialog will always fail to call the Windows Common Dialog library. Any guru here can explain if it is still possible to use IEShowSaveFileDialog to open a SaveAs dialog in protected mode under win 7? Thanks.

Just thought I'd share this since its been a pain my $#@ for the past weeks. If you are using a Win7 machine as your workstation and file server and have several machines for rendering, this is will keep things running smoothly.

I recently upgraded my main workstation to Win7. I have 4 render nodes on a rack running WinXP. My workstation is the main machine I work on but also my file server (didn't have funds yet for separate file server). It has an internal raid and was always good at sharing files among the 5 machines. Well when I upgraded my workstation to Win7, suddenly, I seemed to have a lot of problems with machines connected to it, constantly demanding data and sending it back...rendering. So for a few weeks, I was down a machine or two usually to keep the whole machine from freezing up and even that didn't always work. I spent countless hours asking on forums but never got a clear answer. Well I think I finally figured it out thanks to this posting on this site:

Windows 7 Nonpaged Pool Srv Error 2017 | alan.lamielle.net

I implemented these registry fixes and now things are humming nicely, no more BSOD or system crashes/freezes. Hope this helps anyone with similar issues networking Win7 and WinXP.

A:Tip for getting Win7 and WinXP to work smoothly

Some research led me to find this Google Groups discussion about the problem and this Microsoft Technet article discussing the solution (look at the bottom of the page).

Apparently you need to tell Windows that you want to use the machine as a file server and that it should allocate resources accordingly.

Set the following registry key to ‘1′:
HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory

Management\LargeSystemCache
and set the following registry key to ‘3′:
HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanServer\Parameters\Size

After making these changes and restarting, I haven’t seen this issue arise again. Fixed!

Thanks for reporting in with this fix krivel, it looks like to share resources with XP these two registry keys need to be adjusted.

I have updated both browsers and the plugins, but the problem persists and I have no idea of what to do.
Any suggestion?

Thanks in advance.

A:need help for making this driver work on win7

I ran your INF file through the chkinf tool for you. Output attached. There were 4 errors, 10 warnings.

Here's one of your BIG problems: The result highlights the fact there's no .cat (Catalog) file for your driver. That tells me this is an unsigned driver. (Among other things, a driver's digital signature is stored in a .cat file)

XP allowed unsigned drivers. That's gonna be a problem with Windows 7. If you Google, i've seen people who've suggested methods how to sign a driver yourself... but I've never tried it nor know if those method actually worked in the past (or still work at this point in time).

I have most of a win7 64 bit/xp(3) network set up but the xp system can't access files on the win7 system.

Here's what works and what doesn't and what I've set up.

In Win 7, the xp files show in the computer/network window and are accessible from there. However, the xp files cannot be mapped. the control panel/network map shows an icon and name of the xp system and says "the following discovered devices cannot be placed in the map." no explanation is given.

In the xp system, the win 7 files show in network places but when i click them, an access denied message appears.

the win 7 system name is W520, the xp system name is XP
the work group for both is named workgroup

to give the xp permission to access the win 7 files, in the advanced sharing window, i tried to put in the location of the xp workgroup like this, but it wouldn't accept it: \\xp\workgroup. only W520 appears as a location.

i've already given permission for "everybody" to access the win 7 files, but i suspect that is everybody at the w520 location only.

how can i add the xp system to advanced sharing section and how can i get it mapped?

and is there anything i haven't asked that i should do?

thanks for any help.

Hi guys,

I had an alienware m15x laptop with win7 'till one day the MOBO died. They couldn't fix the problem and because of the m15x getting discontinued just some weeks ago they couldn't send me a replacement either, that's why I'm getting a refund with which I intend to build a gaming desktop. I kept my laptop's HDD because of privacy measures. Now that you know to which situation I was referring, here goes my question: If I clone my 2.5" HDD to a 3.5" one and then install that HDD in my new rig will the OS still work? I know that if my lap had a OEM win7 copy it's going to be bounded to the original MoBo but I'm not sure if it was an OEM version, is there any way to know if it was one? I still have the original Win7 Disc . Thanks!

A:Will my Win7 copy work in this situation?

you cannot legally use that oem since it was married to the alienware laptop//motherboard. If you would have kept the laptop and replace the motherboard, then you could have used it but since it will be an entirely new system, you cannot reuse it. It should say on the coa that came with your win7 disk if it is oem/system builders copy.
