Preferred Solution: Way Too Many Duplicate Files!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have a Dell Inspiron 3000 desktop using Office 365. I have had to rely on the Microsoft's free Tech Support a number of times; upgrading to Windows 10, elements of office not working, etc. Several times, rather then fixing the issue at hand the Techs have created new user profiles. This leads to my current problem. Under the "Users" file their are 10 users listed: Bob, bobhu, Default.migrated, Default AppPool, Public, Robert, Temp, Test, Test2, Test Profile with only 2 actual user accounts on the computer. This has led to multiple duplicate files in different locations on the computer. For some reason (it may be related to installation of Windows updates), the computer will ocassionally revert back to a previous user profile. If not caught immediately this can lead to updating of old files rather then the current version of a file. For example: When using Quicken it will revert back to data files that may be a year old. if not paying attention when adding new data this could lead to erroneous data.

Sorry if this is long winded but I wanted to try to fully explain the issue. My basic question is, "What would be the best way to resolve this problem permanently, keeping in mind that I do not want to lose any old data, documents, pictures, etc. I have 3 solutions in mind (listed in no particular order), (1) pay a local computer shop to fix the issue (2) Try to resolve the issue myself [some tech help/knowledge may be required] (3) Use Microsoft Support on-l... A:Windows 10-Multiple User files-Duplicate Files

Do it yourself.

Keep the two actual User accounts plus Public and Default.

Then, working on one of the others at a time, copy or move any files desired to Public or one of your actual accounts. Then remove that non-wanted account and its data. (In Windows 8.1 this would be in Control Panel - User Accounts; should be similar in Windows 10.) If the User account does not appear in the list of user accounts then you can just delete the folder from C:\Users.

I ran a program on my laptop that searches for duplicate files. It reported that I have in excess of 9,000 duplicate files. How does one know what files to remove? Are these files doing any harm other than taking up space? Is there a program that tells you what duplicate to remove or does it automatically?
Thanks,
Phil

Many of these sites offer this to try and gather information from your system, or install nasty code on your system. There may be some legitimate sites with no malicious intent, but I would be sceptical of any of these sites. As it has been said, nothing in life is free. There is always a catch. You can perform a wild card search for duplicate files on your system, just by using the wildcard * and then the type of file you are searching for. An example would be *win.jpg This would search for any file that had the letters win.jpg Once these are located, the duplicate files may be deleted. You must be very aware that there are many duplicate files on your system, and they may need to be left there. Only duplicate files that you have created could have one of the copies removed.

while using CCleaner I have found a lot of duplicate files in the file finder section.
Is it safe to delete the duplicate of these files or should I leave them alone.

If you cannot make that determination yourself, I would not trust CCleaner to make that decision for you. So, I just ran mine and I would not touch a single one of them. I believe you are only headed for trouble if you do. Good luck with your own decision.

did you remove the other user? if not when removing click delete files. If you have and the files on the desktop are the other user and you dont need them simply delete them. (may have to take ownership first)

Hello,
The strangest thing is happening and I'm hoping there is a guru out there who can help me with this . I set up my xbox 360 this morning to my windows vista 64 ultimate.
when i go to select songs, there are duplicates of every song. Keep in mind I have it set up ONLY to watch my "music" folder and thats the only folder on my computer that has all my MP3s. So I get on my computer and open my music folder. There no duplicate songs that I can find. I pull up the seach function and typed ".MP3". Sure enough, duplicates of every song are showing here too. And with the exact same file path! This is very strange as when I go directly into my music folder there are not duplicates.

Has anyone else had this problem and know a fix for it? Any way do delete these duplicates?
Thanks for any help!

A:duplicate files

Sure. You can search bynaming the extensions of the files you want to search for.

--
Click the Start icon
Click on Computer
Double-click the drive you want to search (if it's the main drive, double-click the (C drive.)
Find the "search" box to the upper-right corner of the C: explorer window

For example, it will read:

Search System ( C: )

Type the extension of the file you want to search for/sort, inside of that box.

For instance if a PDF file, type: .pdf and press Enter.

Allow the computer to search for each file-type you want, by entering the extensions of various files you want to search for.

Hope that helps.

There is no built in feature for this in Windows. There are a few third party applications that can help you with this, but I strongly advice against it, especially if you have important files on your drive.

System Mechanic is a serious piece of junk and your system is better off without it.  Any "information" conveyed by this program should be categorized as "untrustworthy" "to be disregarded" and so on.

One Review

FWIW:  Windows routinely has duplicate files and such are not a source/cause of concern, if these are categorized as system files.  Many programs may install a file needed by that program, in that location.  If such file is removed, then the program may not work as intended.

One option in JV16 that I recommend you never use is the Find Duplicates. You have to be very knowledgeable to use this feature. Usually one of the "duplicates" can be removed and one is required, but it takes a very knowledgeable person to make that decision.

It seems to me that no matter how well managed (defragged, compacted, etc.) the HD is, duplicated files and folders drag down a computer. In addition to wasting HD space, of course. That's why I'm trying to get rid of at least some of the dupes in mine.

In this pursuit, I just dl'ed and ran a duplicate-file finder/cleaner program for the first time. It found 18305 duplicate groups (# of files duped 2X + # of files duped 3X, etc., totalled), 52300 duplicated files, 4.26 GB duplicate size. Holy #^&%! These are TRUE duplicate files (compared byte-to-byte). The dupe program has a "quick and dirty" button to instantly delete all but the first file in each of the dupe groups. That is certainly an easy solution, but it's also dangerous I think. The way I see it, I need to take a look at each of the files, (think about what they do, why they're where they are, if I want to keep them there or put them somewhere else), and then decide if I want to get rid of one or more of the duplicates.

This is complicated. Example: Let's say I have a folder of customized icons, and the folder happens to be duplicated in several places, and other files/folders use those icons, i.e., they get the icons via a path (thread, whatever you call it) to ONE of the duplicated icon source folders. Right? Right. So now what happens if I move or delete the wrong duplicate source folder? No custom icons is what happens. Because the path is a dead end. ... Read more

A:How Did I Get All These Duplicate Files?

It might help if we knew which application you downloaded to find the duplicates; it may be the output can be manipulated or sorted in such a way as to make deletion an easier process.
If you could give one or two examples of the duplicate files (including the path, of course), it might help us understand what KIND of files are being duplicated and this would suggest a cause of it in the first place.

John

A:Duplicate files

No!
After installing a service pack, these files are used to restore sytem files if they get corrupted/or deleted. If you delete the folder, Windows will have to get the files from the XP CD: these would be older/different versions than the ones installed with the service pack, as a result your system could become unstable or at worst, unusable - meaning a reinstall.

You may, remove the uninstall files, if your happy with the way your system is running - best to wait a month or two after installing an update/SP before removing the uninstall files.

Uninstall files are the ones in C:\Windows\ starting with
$NtUninstall...

DON'T delete the $hf_mig$ folder.

The add/remove programs entries will still exist after deleting the SP/updates folders, these are located in the registry at...

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ SOFTWARE\ Microsoft\ Windows\ CurrentVersion\ Uninstall

expand the list and find the entries to be deleted. Or use the Tools utility in Ccleaner (delete entry, not uninstall).

Today I went to a search of all pictures on my computer. From there I do a List and sort by size, after that I click on images so I can see if there are duplicates on my files. There is duplicates of everything however when i look into the file containing the pictures or documents it shows that both of the items are in the same location. When I go to that location there is only one of the items. Does anyone know why my search is showing duplicates of everything however they have the same path.

I am at a loss as to why everything is duplicated on my computer, especially because when you look where they are located they are in the exact same files.

I think this may be why my computer memory is almost full. I can't even sync my iPhone to iTunes because there isn't enough space.
Any help would be appreciated!
Thanks,
Allie

By any chance have you thought of an external hdd?? Also maybe try moving the files somewhere else or make a copy of those and try and remove them perhaps. BUT if they are really that important you SHOULD have an external backup. I bought a WD passport for that same reason for crucial files.

And how do I get rid of them?

Just ran duplicate-file finder program first time. Found 18305 duplicate groups (?, think that's folders), 52300 duplicated files, 4.26 GB duplicate size!!!! Those are TRUE duplicate files (compared bit-to-bit) to find, think about what's in them, where they are, why they're there, if I want them there or somewhere else or if i want them at all, and then decide to get rid of one (or more) of the duplicate(s).

What about this, as an example? Say I have a folder of special icons and it happens to be duplicated in several places. And I have other folders using those icons; they get the icons via a path that I originally setup to ONE of the duplicated icon source folders. What happens if I move or delete the wrong source folder. No icons. Because the path to get them is a dead end.

Holy #^&%!

But it seems to me that no matter how well managed, defragged, compacted, etc., the disk(s) is/are, dupe files and folders have to drag down the system. In addition to wasting HD space, of course. That's why I want to get rid of them.

So now that I vented (I feel better already), How DO I do this job of eliminating duplicate files? Is there some kind of tutorial or guru geek's web page explaining how to do this in a methodical, organized way? (I've looked and haven't found one) And most of all, it has to be understandable by an average joe enduser like me.

And then... I could really use some way of not repeating this pr... Read more

A:How did I get all these duplicate files?

Hi brillo

I wouldn't worry too much about a large number of duplicate files. Today's hard drives are large enough that it's rarely a problem -- whereas a deleted item that a favorite program wants to use can be a true pain.

Check your duplicate-files program, and see if you can direct it to not look in the System Restore folders [aka "System Volume Information"] . Many of the duplicates can be from restore points. Many are also likely from the "Uninstall" files and folders for Windows Updates, and for the programs you've installed.

Try limiting the areas your duplicate-files program checks, and try a less-aggressive run of "Disk Cleanup" [Start/All Programs/Accessories/System Tools/Disk Cleanup], which doesn't bother program folders & won't result in your programs complaining.

Running Disk Cleanup now and then should be maintenance enough for most computers.

Best of luck

P.S. .. many of the duplicates are likely small images and files from several folders in your Temporary Internet Files folders & subfolders. In Start/Control Panel/Internet Options ... go to the "Advanced" tab, and under the Security section, place a checkmark in the box next to "Empty Temporary Internet Files folder when browser is closed" -- this will keep the temporary files from hanging around in the first place. They really aren't needed - it's a relic from the days of 14.4k and 28k dialup modems. Make the Inte... Read more

Hi all. I should go and buy a new computer i know but my old TIME 500 meg pentium 111 with a 17 gig HD and 256 MEM runs ok just for surfing. Im not into games so my 16 MEG VID card works ok. I bought it back in 1999.
What im wondering is could there be anyway of fine tuning it. for instance could there be a host of duplicate files to free up HDD space.
MSconfig is not so easy to use as i dont know what should be running and what not.
I would like to get a few more years out of it if possible so any advice on how to keep the old girl running would be great.
Cheers to all

You didn't mention what OS, so I'm assuming XP. Running Disk Clean Up and Disk Defragmenter would certainly help. MSCONFIG is a troubleshooting tool. I'd try Codestuff Starter. Not quite as intimidating as Autoruns

I just ran Easy Cleaner 2.0 by Toni Arts and it found 4,376 duplicate files thats 866,195,463 bytes.
Is there an easy way to know which to delete? or a better cleaner to use.
Thanks for any help

Personally I dont believe in those types of programs. BY removing a file that may be deemed a duplicate, you may break a program that has extra functionality built in or looks for a file in a specific location.

If it checks for duplicates only by name and not other characteristics, then I would not use it.
