Lenovo Yoga Mode Control crashes daily on Windows ...

Q: Lenovo Yoga Mode Control crashes daily on Windows ...

I'm running the latest insider version of Windows 10 (soon to be the Anniversary Release) on a Yoga 900. The "Lenovo Yoga Mode Control" ((ymc.exe) has consistently crashed every day for the last few months. Crash reports are logged. Are there any plans to fix this issue any time soon?

Preferred Solution: Lenovo Yoga Mode Control crashes daily on Windows ...

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

What version of YMC are you using?

A new version ( was posted just a few days ago: Lenovo Yoga Mode Control for Windows 10 (64-bit). Perhaps it addresses the issue with the Anniversary Release.

Since you have to hunt around different Lenovo sites (and other sites) to find out about these softwares, I decided to make a post to get feedback from actual Yoga owners on how these programs interact, what they do, which ones are prerequisite, and which ones are unnecessary. Please don't take this as a blanket answer. This is just what I have found. It might be right - it might be wrong. I'm looking for others to post their experiences as well. Lenovo System Interface Foundation Driver - Necessary prerequisite (missing driver in device manager without it). It allows the Lenovo Utility and Lenovo Companion to work. Lenovo Yoga Mode Control - Necessary if you want to use your yoga to seemlessly change between all the different modes (laptop, tablet, tent, stand). This software is responsible for autorotating and putting Windows into tablet mode. Lenovo Utility - Recommended(?) This one I'm not too sure on. I remember that I was missing some function that I wanted but I can't remember what it was now. Maybe battery cycle count and health? Lenovo Companion - I don't have this one installed and don't think it's necessary but would like someone else to shed some light here.

Like stated in the description. the Lenovo Yoga Control Service require 3% out of the CPU, all the time. and the only thing the service does is checking the orientation of the screen, and disable keyboard and mouse when flipped. This is absurd, especially since it drains battery constantly. I hope that this will be fixed eventually, until that time, I will turn the service off and use the computer like a regular laptop.

I've recently (13th of April) bought new Yoga 530-14IKB. It has adequate CPU i3-8130U, which is faster than i5-6200U in my sister's Acer laptop, but I anyway don't play any games. Despite that, its battery life isn't good. It works about 3-3,5 hours in Chrome. In task manager I've noticed that Yoga Mode Control is constantly using 15-30% CPU and its battery usage is described as very high. After disabling it, I can't switch to the tablet mode and keyboard and touchpad don't turn off. Is there somebody who has Yoga laptop and experience similar problem?

Hello All, I have an issue with my YOGA 700 laptop when logged in multiple accounts simultaneously. Whenever an account is left logged on and the user is switched as opposed to logging off, the cpu usage ramps up very high with several RUNDLL32 processes being the culprit. I have checked the RUNDLL32 processes with Process Explorer and the command line are as follows:C:\Windows\system32\rundll32.exe C:\ProgramData\LenovoTransition\Server\x64\EnableAutoRotation.dll,RunCustomMonitor The directory is as follows: C:\ProgramData\LenovoTransition\Server\x64\ The only solution I have found is restarting the laptop. The problems comes back when again more than one user is logged in. Also, the rundll32 processes only run high cpu on one account at a time and there doesn't seem to be a preference for a specific account, all of them are plagued one at a time with the problem. Disabling the Yoga Mode Control service is a fix but that breaks the mode control which is essential in this laptop. I have tried installing all the available software on the Software page foor the YOGA 700. The rundll32 processes drain the battery very fast and I can't always log off other users when they have apps open!  I have posted a screenshot of process explorer showing 2 rundll32.exe processes using 25% cpu usage each. However, sometimes up to 4 rundll32.exe processes open up and they use combined 100% cpu usage, which makes the laptop run very hot and slow. In t... Read more

Hey. I bought my Yoga 520-14IKB (Intel Core i5, 8GB RAM, 256gb NVMe SSD, GeForce 940MX) 2 month ago, had no problems, till last week. Now sometimes i experience such a strange behaviour. Mainly i work on my laptop in normal mode, and sometimes, during such work, it can false trigger a tablet mode for a few (2-3) seconds (notification appers), which causes the keyboard to switch off for this time, despite the fact, that it still stands as a normal laptop, not even close to position, which triggers the yoga mode. How can i fix this? System is Windows 10 April 2018 Update, have all the latest drivers and latest version of BIOS.

Hi everyone. I can see that people with other similar style Lenovo laptops (Yoga 900) complain about the same issue so was wondering if there is a solution or an optimized version of this software. I did an update of the BIOS and the Power Management driver and still a constant power usage.  Once the laptop is flipped the YMC detects it and turns off the keyboard functionality to prevent accidental presses and that is pretty much all until it flipped back and enabled. And all of this requires a constant high CPU usage? Any help would be highly appreciated. I also tried rolling back to older drivers without luck in decreasing this CPU hog usage. To put such load on a i5 6th gen CPU really implies an inferior service integration....

I have been using Windows XP Pro since days after its release, and have always praised its stability after upgrading from 98SE.

However, two weeks ago I needed to purchase more RAM and added 512MB (PC2700 DDR) to my system, along with an AOC 9KLR 19" monitor. I write computer training manuals, and have used a dual-screen setup for three years now to allow me to avoid continual Alt-tabbing between apps. Also, having up to 3 or 4 apps including Photoshop open, plus Win Media Player in the background, was proving a little tough going for 256MB.

Now I am experiencing daily O/S crashes, sometimes more often, in which everything freezes and the mouse pointer disappears, to be replaced by the attached image. The only way out, unfortunately, is to hit the cruel Reset button and lose whatever I had been working on. As always there are several apps open at the time, but no more so than before the upgrade, prior to these crashes.

By the way, Win XP Pro was a fresh install on a newly formatted NTFS partition five months ago, and all maintenance schedules are automated twice weekly. My greatest appreciation to anybody who can solve this bothersome problem for me.

This is now my second Lenovo Yoga 720 13" that I recived from Best Buy. I returned the first one because I noticed the screen did not meet the rubber bezel at the top, exposing the inside of the monitor. This caused me to worry about dust and hair getting behind the screen and possibly destroying it. The second one has the same problem as well as many others. The power button on the first one clicked when I pressed it, however with this one there is no click and I must hold the laptop and press the power button all with more strength than a person should have to just to get it to turn the laptop on. Also the trackpad comes above the right side of the laptop where the left side rests below. There is also a strange rattling coming from the plastic peices at the bottom of the screen. Many of the keys on the keyboard stick at random points when I'm typing causing the keys to not type. Also many of the lights behind the keys are either burned out or extremely dim, now I find it hard to believe that they burned out from my using the laptop since it is fairly new. Lastly there is sharp metal sticking out on the right side of the laptop that often scratches me when I put it into tablet mode. I can still use the laptop, but I feel like I have to be overly careful with it because of all these issues. It is as if this laptop was never checked for defects before it was sent to Best Buy.

I posted this in another user's thread but am starting a new thread just in case any Lenovo tech support see this. My Lenovo Yoga 920 also hard crashes unpredictably, sometimes 3-4 times every day. It will sometimes go a day or two without crashing but then will crash frequently at intermittent times. Like the previous poster, I have tried running the Lenovo diagnostics and found nothing, all my drivers are up to date, and the system records no failures at all before each crash. If anyone has found a solution to this issue, PLEASE post something. It also started happening to my computer a little after the 1 year warranty was up and I absolutely cannot afford a new computer. It is very disappointing and stressful to think this investment is almost worthless.

Several weeks ago I was playing Skyrim on the release date. I played for about 40 minutes, and I went to quick save and my computer froze. I restarted to the screen saying an error occured due to a recent software or hardware change. I had to run windows repair to try to fix the issue.

Startup repair failed, I ended up erasing the partition and reinstalling windows. I was slowly reinstalling programs when everything I had open (mozilla, various driver installations, etc) slowly started to freeze and say not responding. After a few minutes of this the computer locked up again, I had to reboot using the power button, only to find that windows was unable to load again, and startup repair was not working.

I reinstalled WIndows 7 for the third time. I ran Prime95 all night. I could hear the CPU fan running in the middle of the night, so im sure it was working. In the morning I checked my computer only to find it had froze again, I hardbooted, and windows was unable to start again.

Again I reinstalled windows, made a memtest boot disk, and ran it overnight. In the morning I checked to find no errors.I exited memtest and windows started to load, but it was becoming stuck on a black screen with my mouse being the only thing visible.

I'm not sure what else... Read more

I have always been a fan of Lenovo but things like this will make me think twice about purchasing their laptops again. I have the YOGA 720 13. The Lenovo Yoga mode control service runs in the background and uses an inordinate amount of CPU resources. On the task manager I can see it uses on average 8-10% of CPU resources continuously. Needless to say this will reduce your battery runtime considerably. I waited to see if Lenovo would fix this issue as it has been mentioned in the forums many times previously but it seems they either dont care or are still somehow unaware of this ridiculously bad software engineering problem. This problem seems to be not just on my model but on several other Yoga models. Considering that battery time is one of the most important considerations in a laptop I wish they would fix this. In any case things like this will impact my next purchasing decision. My solution in the end was to disable the service altogether in the Services tab. Its a pity that a nice piece of hardware is being limited by sloppily coded software. Disabling the YMC service causes your keyboard to be responsive when using the laptop in presentation or tent mode which is annoying as well but at least I get some decent battery time (for Windows...). FYI. If you want much better battery runtime forget windows and try Ubuntu linux 18.10, I often get about 30% more battery when doing casual browsing/document editing.

Less than 2 weeks after the end of my 1-year warranty, my Lenovo Yoga 920 crashed. I've used Lenovo products for years and have recommended the Yoga 920 specifically to many of my coworkers, so when I experienced a hard crash (no blue screen, just a stuck image on screen) I assumed it was something Windows/Driver related. For the past two weeks I've been on a journey to try and resolve the issue but haven't had much luck. Below is a history of what I've experienced and what I've tried:Friday, August 2nd - Computer was plugged in and on, but not being used, when I found it unresponsive. I tried turning it back on and within 1-2 minutes of booting up, it would crash again. Any image on screen would remain on screen (sometimes with visual artifacts, sometimes without) and any music that was playing would be suspended indefinitely until I hard powered off.Booting the machine in Safe Mode would allow me to use the machine for any period of time - the 1-2 minutes before crash was only experienced under normal boot upSaturday-Wednesdays - No issuesWhatever was causing my crashes all Friday (until late in the night) was not causing it for the next several days. I used this time to back up my filesI used this time to verify I was on the latest version of Windows, that my drivers were up to date, and that neither Lenovo Bridge or Lenovo Diagnostics Windows found any errors with the machine.Wednesday, August 6th - Computer was plugged in and on, but not being used, and same as before, i... Please try this first:

Upload Dump Files:
Please go to C:\Windows\Minidump and zip up the contents of the folder. Then upload/attach the .zip file with your next post.
Left click on the first minidump file.
Hold down the "Shift" key and left click on the last minidump file.

Upload that .zip file with your next post.

If you have issues with "Access Denied" errors, try copying the files to your desktop and zipping them up from there. If it still won't let you zip them up, post back for further advice.

If you don't have anything in that folder, please check in C:\Windows for a file named MEMORY.DMP. If you find it, zip it up and upload it to a free file hosting service (not RapidShare as the analysts usually can't download from it) - then post the link to it.

I've had this problem for a year or so. I've since formatted at least 3 times. Nothing seems to cure it. I can begin having this issue the very same day I have formatted my system. My only idea is that some Windows Update patch from the last year has had some kind of adverse effect with my hardware. There seems to be no trigger. I can leave my system alone, with absolutely no software running, and I can come back to find this error popped up. Maybe it has something to do with Windows Scheduling service? But nothing is scheduled...

What could be causing it? It's nothing more than an annoyance, but I'd like to fix it if possible.

Hi! Every time I start a game that uses the Nvidia 940m graphics card in my Yoga 700 with Windows 10, the 'Nvidia Windows kernel mode driver' crashes after a while. The fan then is at maximum and the Yoga shuts down shortly thereafter. I already installed the Intel and Nvidia graphic drivers from the Lenovo support website and tried some tricks found on the web (card always at maximum power etc.), but nothing really helps. The solution center doesn't find any problems with the nvidia card. Support says, the problem is known and they are hoping for Windows Redstone and a better nvidia driver... Anyone else here has this problem? And found a solution??Could it help to update the chipset driver and all the other drivers from the support website too? Thanx in advance,DerHuette

But after some update (!) when I click on Lenovo settings it says " Lenovo settings is now actually Lenovo companion" and it launches Lenovo Companion. And of course there, I cannot see the night mode and there is no way for me to enable the mode. Please help me, that was a really useful function that I used every single night... Thank you in advance
