Q: An interesting question

Good morning

I'm wondering. On my laptop i have a screen (duh) How can i use it to play xbox 360 or for that matter.. use it as a monitor for another PC...
What can i get that has good quality HD comp. in or VGA in. I have VGA out, but not in.....
SO can i get some PCI card to fulfill this desire? Or is this just impossible....?

Thanks

Preferred Solution: An interesting question

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: An interesting question

The laptop screen is hard wired (digitally) to the laptop motherboard.

It's a proprietary digital interface that differs between makes and models.

It's not therefore "available" to use as an external monitor, even if you were to disassemble the laptop.

Is it possible to send a fax over a cell phone? Hubby posed this question today. I can't think of a way it could be done, but promised I'd try to see if anyone here had ever heard of it being done.

A:Interesting question

A quick google search

Question: How can I send faxes with my cell phone?

Answer:
Our fax software can send faxes with cell phone modems, as long as your modem can be seen from a COM Port on your computer, and your cell phone carrier supports this. You may need to call your cell phone service provider to ask if faxing is supported.

Hi,

I was wondering if the following is possible or not.
I want to put a message box on certain folders. To explain, when the user opens a certain folder, windows puts up a message on the screen with a message like "This folder is out of date, please use folder 3." or something along the same lines and then open the folder when they click "OK".
I don't want to restrict access, I just want to give the user information when they enter a folder.

I have searched about a bit but I don't really know if it is possible and what to search for.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It'll take some searching but I think I saw this trick somewhere.

Is there a way to block someone from booting up a computer?

(I apologize if this is the wrong forum for this question.)

I have an individual who frequently spends time at my house, and I do not want her to have access to this computer. I'm sure there is a way to do it, but I don't know how. I've tried going to the CMOS screen on start up and setting a password there - It didn't work. I can't remember if there is a password command that can go into a DOS .bat file.

I have an Intel Pentium III, 500 MHz processor. The "brand" name is Pionex. I'm not sure of the motherboard type.

I would appreciate any insite on this problem. Thanks in advance.

Well MS fixed "Error 80248015" ,  Thinking about it this AM how did they access our machines to apply the fix????????????????????

A:Interesting Question

They didn't, the problem was created by an outdated file located on the Microsoft Update servers.

When the Windows Update Client on your computer tries to update, first it check if there is a new version of the client on the server and during that check it downloads a file that didn't pass the validation check because of the expired date.

one of the mucky-mucks got a new laptop today, imaged it, installed his custom apps, copied over his profile, installed all necessary software for his various apps, and the only problem I am having is that he wants his custom dictionary imported. Now, I know that with word it's normal.dot; I know this as I tend to have most of my office suite products pretty customized and back up the toolbars rather frequently, as I don't feel like re-adding a few thousand entries into the custom dictionary.

My question, however, is is there a place where office stores ALL of the custom dictionary stuff, as when he opens outlook all his custom entries are popping up in spell checker, and he understandably doesn't want to rebuild that.

I had thought that by bringing over his profile it would solve that issue, or rather had assumed it, as nobody has ever voiced that question before in 5 years of doing this.

So is there a central repository that office dumps stuff in outside the profile that I need to bring up to his new machine?

It would help if you have a hardware keylogger but I don't think it would help if you had a much more common software keylogger.

Hi,

I would like to know if it is possible to add the username and password information into a hyperlink so that as soon as the hyperlink is clicked it will go to the specific page and bypass the sign on screen.

The website in question has an .aspx ending to it. Have just found out i cannot post the exact site on these forums.

I notice this is an asp page and wonder if this is possible or not, I have 30 children accessing these hyperlinks at a time for a class and it would be helpful if each and everyone of them did not have to sign in.

I connect to a hotspot with a USB dongle. I want to connect another machine, a Wii to be exact, in another room but it can't recieve the signal from the hotspot. I was wondering if there was a way to use the wireless router I have, which only has one input and that is ethernet, to somehow extend the signal to the other room? I have no way of plugging my USB adapter into the router. Can the router plug into the ethernet port on my computer and transmit what is being received via the USB dongle? Thank you guys so much.

A:Interesting USB adapter / router question.

Bridging wireless connections with a pc

Short answer yes.
I currently have a DLink router in one room, a gaming bridge in another room and a USB wireless adapter in a third room. The internet connection from my cable modem service is being bridged to the usb adapter which relays all the internet to the router. The router also communicates wirelessly with the gaming bridge passing along all that traffic.

If you can connect the WII to the router/gaming bridge(one ethernet port makes it sound more like a bridge) then connect the router to your pc using the ethernet port. Finally there should be two connections under "Start>settings>network connections" (assumes windows xp). Select the two connections (holding ctrl while clicking) then right click either and select "bridge connections". That should pass all traffic from your wireless USB adapter to the ethernet adapter.

I don't have a WII but for the XBox 360 bridging was prefered to Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) as it blindly forwards all ports and eliminates the need to specify what ports are necessary for gaming.

Good Luck

On discord, its not uncommon for me to come across "Cursed MP4 Files" with strange properties.

I'm incredibly interested how the creators of these files were able to get their results and mostly I want to make my own "cursed files". Some of the properties I've seen are video lengths upwards of 13,000 hours long, yet still being 1 MB. I've also seen videos that have negative video lengths and videos that display the video length as 0, yet still plays a video.

How were some of these made? I can file share the specific MP4 files in question

this is going to sound bizarre, but i need the info...i have been sending my husband nude photos to his mediacom email account. i asked him for his password and he freaked out and said i couldn't have it. it seems silly, but why would he say no? anyway, i don't want his password at all, i'm just wondering if someone can verify something for me...my husband claims that he cannot give me his password because i won't be able to see any emails, as all his emails sent to the mediacom address are forwarded in 15 seconds to outlook express on his work computer. he claims that i cannot have his password because the mediacom email is for work, and others in his store have access to the address log in, but he says they cannot see my photos because they are going to outlook. how does this work? sounds odd to me. basically, even though on my home computer i can go to the mediacom website and technically log in to his account if he gave me his password...but i wouldn't see any emails?
this is what hubby says...and is outlook truly this amazing

mediacom doesn't delete the messages, outlook express takes them from mediacom, and delivers them to my inbox....It is amazing when you think about it.

A:question about outlook and mediacom mail communication...interesting story at least

If he has Outlook Express set to check for new mail every 15 seconds and to delete downloaded messages from the (Mediacom) server immediately then what he says is true. I've never used OE, but I doubt that you can set it to check for mail more frequently than every minute.

Hello!
Like so many others before me, I have an issue and want help... And I’d be very grateful to anyone who can help...

So... yesterday, I believe, I was browsing around the internet... and I got the typical "This page cannot be displayed" error when I attempted to go to one of my heavily frequented websites. I refreshed a few times, as I thought the error popped up a bit quickly (and everyone knows that IE will, on occasion, toss that error at you for no good reason -_-)... but to no avail...

I shrugged, and went off to another of my regular websites. Same error. Now this struck me as odd. I refreshed a few times... both of these websites are LARGE websites... and generally are not down... one of them can be slow and sluggish on occasion, but very rarely down... Perhaps there was something wrong with my net connection? A few other clicks around the internet revealed that some websites would still load normally as though there was nothing wrong... So maybe just those websites, then?

I sent links to a few friends of mine over Yahoo!... all three of them said that the two webpages that would not load at all loaded fine for them... ...Even odder.

After a bit more experimentation, I discovered:

Some websites Will Not Show Up. At all. I get 'This page cannot be displayed" errors until the cows come home.

Some websites will display fine.

Some websites will give me 'page cannot be displayed' errors for the first several refreshes, then will... Read more

His recomendation of Ubuntu as an improvement over Windows makes all of his points highly suspect. :/

Not only would it contain all the problems of changing from win7 to win 8 (Completely new interface, nothing where it was in the last version etc, especially since he recommends the version with Unity enabled, an even WORSE implementation of Metro than Metro itself). I am home for the summer and having to put up with dial-up. This might have been tolerable if it wasn't dial-up and infected with dozens of pop-ups. I've run ad-aware and spybot to no avail and just today downloaded and ran HijackThis. However, a few interesting error messages came up that I thought I should at least bring to your attention before I copied the log to this post. The first message stated: For some reason your system denied write access to the Hosts file. If any hijacked domains are in this file, HijackThis may NOT be able to fix this. If that happens, you need to edit the file yourself. To do this, click Start, Run and type: notepad "C:\WINDOWS\System32\drivers\etc\hosts" and press Enter. This has been the only real virus i have had.
*shudders*

My girlfriend the other day thought she would be clever and download a driver for my g15 keyboard which i had been too lazy to do lately.

So she went ahead and found a promising looking site with plenty of ads and free Free FREE!!! things to download.

So she gets what she thinks is the driver, it doesnt work, she gives up.

In a few days i come home to my computer with AVG showing a massive list of threats found and more being added every few seconds.

Avg labeled it as win32/virut.

clicked on start and every single icon was that generic windows "i-dont-know-how-to-run-that-program" icon.

i cringed, physically cut my network cable in half (i know a bit dramatic, but i had plenty of spare and to unplug i would have to move things), and went straight to google for info.

Discovered that format is the only way, so i went ahead and booted from bart PE and made an image my 1Tb of Progams and other data.

My question is, is there anyway to retrieve my data. It will be a fair few months of downloading to get it all back.

A:This was interesting

Reformatting a hard disk deletes all data. If you decide to reformat, you can back up all your important documents, personal data files and photos. The safest practice is not to backup any executable files (*.exe), screensavers (*.scr), autorun (.ini) or .html files because they may be infected by malwareware appending itself to the executable. Some types of malware may even disguise itself by adding and hiding its extension to the existing extension of files so be sure you look closely at the full file name. After reformatting, as a precaution, make sure you scan these files with your anti-virus prior to copying them back to your hard drive.~ quietman7 from http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/ind...t&p=1147299

While opening my Internet Explorer 6.0 Each time I move about from page to page , Zone Alarm pops up and ask a request to send a Rundll 32.exe file. To me this doesnèt seem right, can someone explain what is happening. Is this a trojan.

A:This is interesting!

It would be a trojan if the spelling is not exactly: rundll32.exe (verifying that those are Ls and not anything that looks like them.

ZoneAlarm will tell you what IP the process is trying to connect to and sometimes that can be helpful in determining what is happening.

Naturally you should run an updated antivirus scan, but we can also have a good look at what is running if you post the results of the StartupList program available here:

My bet is we will see the process trying to connect to your ISPs Domain Name Servers. I think that is what we've seen before, but I don't recall any answers as to why.

So I just bought Windows 8 Pro. Everything seemed to work, then Windows Explorer wouldn't stay open, basically it went into a boot loop, but Windows stayed loaded. After recreating my user a number of times, I found the issue. Every time I log into the Windows Store, Explorer breaks. I have not found a solution to this (except of course not using the store), any ideas? I've tried searching online for a solution, but I haven't found anything. Most of the searches resulted in non-final-version of Windows 8 issues, but not directly addressing my issue.

A:Something interesting... A bug perhaps?

I won't mark it as solved quite yet. But I did find one culprit. Bluetooth, and it's onboard. So I uninstalled it (the drivers), things started looking better. I tried reinstalling it, and it went into a system/computer seemingly infinite boot loop. Luckily, I had UAC on and it saved me. So no Bluetooth. That's ok, it's terrible anyway. Windows installed some generic drivers, but I disabled it. For now Explorer seems stable, but I will let you know in a day or two when I have felt things out. Odd how it only showed up when I try to log into Windows Store.

Well about a week ago my internet on my laptop started to slow dramaticly. I have tried everything to rectify this, and I have assured this is only happening on my latop. I think this is due to some type of security issue. I also have many processes running (72), many of which have names I have not heard of, and seem to have just appeared. Some of these things are named THotKey.exe, iFrmeWrk.exe, end emproxy.exe among many others. I ran Hijackthis and here is my log:

I'm currently sitting at my computer, my headphones plugged into the jack, and i can hear a girl listening to radio and typing on her computer. It was faint, but after i turned the volume to max, i can tell its definitely coming from the computer. I've never encountered such a thing before and i had no idea where to post it. I've checked all my open programs to see if they'res anything playing out of there, but theres nothing. I'm scared of closing the browser cause I'll lose it. She's singing along with the radio, its kinda cute and creepy at the same time

Well then, does anyone know whats going on here?

My brothers PC, witch has the following components

Intel Core 2 duo (cant remember the model name)
1 Gig RAM
ATI Radion X850 XT
Windows XP Home

has developed a strange problem.

One day after previously working with no problems, the ATI drivers said 'We can not find any ATI hardware in your computer'. Downloading and installing new drivers gave the same error. It is currently using the default windows VGA driver, and the display is still connected through the card so it is working.

I went to the device manager, and the graphics card was listed in 'others'. In 'msconfig' under the display tab, it says 'not specified' on anything related to the graphics card.

Nothing inside the PC has been moved and all is plugged in properly. As far as I can tell the graphics card has stopped telling windows what it is, but I don't know why.
When I get time I am going to put another graphics card in the PC (my very old Nvidia 6200 LE) to see if windows recognizes that one.

I just wanted to know if any of you had any suggestions as to why this is happening. I haven't seen this problem before.

I know this isn't the best description of the problem, but I have to go to work, I will Make it better with links to screen shots, and more details about his system after work. For now though any suggestions you have would be helpful. Thanks

Hey there everyone. So here is my problem. I bought a new blank hard drive. I installed windows but when I did, I wasn't paying attention and accidentally installed a 32 bit version on my 64 bit system. However it works fine. The real problem is I want to completely wipe the hard drive to a blank state again and install windows 7 64 bit like it originally came with but even when I try DBAN and I type autonuke, it goes to a black screen and stays there. I need to upgrade my system to 64 bit. The reason being is I created a system recovery disc from my windows 7 64bit that was there before, but because the 32 bit is on there it won't recognize my cd.

so...it was really hot here today (over a hundred), and i've no air conditioning.....my little laptop fan was working overtime, and i was stressing the amd althon chipset with photoshop and IE and office and email and messenger and.....
boom!...the emachine turned itself off...not a crash exactly, cause nothing froze, or even slowed down...no error messages...just went from on....to off
i freaked a bit, thinking at first the power browned out...but realized quickly that the battery always covers that...so then i freaked a bit more and wondered if i'd ever get the computer to work again...pushed on and nothing happened....my computer was, effectively dead...
five minutes later i pushed on again and it sprung to life, windows loaded, the sign in screen came up...and the fan was still working overtime, so i turned it off again
and here i am, hours later, posting this puzzle and wondering...is there like a little fuse in my laptop that'll do that once, or maybe reset itself...or do i need to be more concerned than i am....everything seems fine...lost a little work, but that's ok
anybody got more of a clue than me?

A:verrrrry interesting.....

Definitely sounds heat-related... the processor gets to hot and the computer shuts down to keep from cooking the chip. With all the extra work you throwing at the processor (more work = more heat), it shut down. Try to make sure nothing is restricting the airflow. Maybe check into one of these add-on lap desks(?), some of them have extra fans built in.

Hi,

Recently I installed an SSD (OCZ VERTEX II 80 gB) in my Medio Akoya Notebook. I installed W7 Ultimate x64, made some tweaks like disable defrag en index en search. Everything worked fine. I installed some programs en everything still worked fine. Suddenly this problem came up.

Every time I startup my computer, work on it, install programs, create files, etc... and in the end shut it down, after starting it up again the computer is in the same state as before all those changes.

However when i do all these things and restart it (without shutting it down) the changes are still there. When I then shut it down again the changes are all gone again.

It looks like every time the computer starts up, it uses the latest restore point.

I'm desperate and after trying allmost every option i don't know what to do anymore.

I can't make any system changes because when I shut down my computer and start it up again, it's in the state I left it before.

I'm having a weird issue with the wireless connection at my local University.

I get a network connection, DHCP works, DNS works (can ping url's/public IPs), but at intermittent intervals, I get a situation where I open a web page, and I get a white screen. Firefox reports "done" at the bottom, and the UrL is displayed at the top. No content, however. This is intermittent however, and it begins to work after about 10 min. It goes back to being broken shortly thereafter.

Take into account:

-This only happens at the University.
-It is a new problem. I have been using the Wifi for years without problems.
-Using Firefox, but problem is also with IE.

The steps I have taken to diagnose:

-Repairing connection doesn't work.
-Flushing/Registering DNS doesn't work.
-Nothing in event viewer that shows problems.
-Turned off security (SB teatimer, Avast, WinFirewall).

Is there anything else I can try apart from going to the admin around here (huge campus, that could take weeks)?

Thanks in advance.

So I have been spending most of my day today trying to solve my corrupted mup.sys (Or whatever is causing that file not to work).

Problem:
When booting XP in normal mode it hangs in the "Windows is loading" screen, won't go any further.
When booting in safe mode, the .sys files that drop down stop at Mup.sys and then it goes to the "Windows is loading screen" and hangs.

However, some times I am able to get into windows, but it instantly freezes.
I do not think this is due to a virus ( I could be wrong) but there are no processes that I see on start up ( Ctl + Alt + del works when I do get in).
I think it has to be some type of registry error because when the problem 1st occured, I was running CCcleaner's registry cleaner. I had thought it froze, so I tryed to close it, then my whole computer froze ( well programs did at least, capslock on my keyboard shows that everything didn't freeze). But when I started my computer back up, it just hung out at the loading screen.

Further information:
-I have been able to get into my dual-booted Ubuntu OS (that's how I am here right now) but it is temperamental to say the least. When I boot Ubuntu, it says there is a corrupted windows file from not closing correctly last time it shut down, fixing (0,0) OR (0,1). Then Ubuntu comes up and works :) half the time at least.
Have no idea what this means, but it shows that all my hardware is working at least, phew.

Hello,

I'm brand new to this forum........ I chose techguy because it appears to be the best. Anyway........

I work in a small office with 5 PC's - all the same in model and configuration. Dell Dimension 3000 with Win XP Pro SP2. They are 1.60 GHz w/768 of ram. All computers are up to date with all the latest Win-updates, latest AVG 7.5 defs and ad-aware.

I have a server running Win 2000 Server SP4 with 512 MB of ram. The server has a very light load - just file sharing. At max there's like 8 files open.

So the issue I'm having is this: One of the PC's will hang for about a min, when accessing a folder residing on a mapped network drive. The MND of course is a shared folder on the server - mounted on the local PC. Now it only happens intermittently. When this occurs, I can hop on another pc and access the same file/folder with no issues.

My current solution is to log off the user, and log back on (under the same user), and the problem goes away temp.

This machine also has AOL 9.0 optimized. I hate AOL and suspect that a hidden spyware or virus utility may be running in the back ground and conflicting with AVG..??? Or the user profile is bad...???

Any suggestions?

Thanks guys,

Pete

I'm having a problem where when I open a new tab or a new browser window all together, sometimes it will load my homepage up. Other times it won't load anything, It will just say connecting forever and ever. I've noticed TONS of people having this issue when trying to open a new LINK in a new tab or page (which isnt my main issue, although that's also annoying) See, im having the issue when just opening a plain page. Why does it seem like no one ever has the problems I have? So annoying.

Anyways ive included a video link to a screen capture ive done of what my problem is. For those who don't understand what im talking about, as that seems to be pretty common since i can never explain clearly what my issue is. Here:

Simply try to delete temporary files

Steps to delete temporary files :

From the Internet Explorer 7 command bar, choose Tools and then Delete Browsing History....
In the Delete Browsing History window that appears, click on the Delete files... button, which should be the first button you see.
In the Delete Files window that is displayed, you are presented with the question Are you sure you want to delete all temporary Internet Explorer files?
Click on Yes to confirm .
The Delete Browsing History window may appear, showing you the progress of the deletion. When this window disappears, all of the files saved (cached) from your Internet browsing activities will have been removed.
Click Close in the Delete Browsing History window to complete the process and return to Internet Explorer.

What makes this really fascinating and mind blowing is the fact that it is literally from the year of 1999 when we all though our computer systems would bring the end of civilized society. It talks about technology that we have today like smartphones, smartTVs, and tablets. What makes this so interesting is how it speaks of a PC+ era where the power of the desktop PC will be everywhere and accessible to everyone and will even be in tablet form and it ends to say that the PC+ era of tablets will be the future of Microsoft...very fascinating how the article parallels perfectly with today. I honestly couldn't believe it was from 1999 because it sounded too modern and too much what Windows 8 is like.

It made me laugh a little because it started out saying that the ritual of the "PC is dead" is going on again that that fewer PCs might be shipped globally.
