Thinkpad S440 16GB memory upgrade

Q: Thinkpad S440 16GB memory upgrade

I was wondering whether somebody could shed some light on this issue. I am (as many more I guess) suffering from memory shortcut on my S440. Now I just stumbled uppon a new upgrade option from Curcial:http://www.crucial.com/usa/en/ct204864bf160b Is this module compatible with a S440 i7 4500u? BIOS might be an issue as far as I read.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Thinkpad S440 16GB memory upgrade

No, It won't work and the problem isn't the BIOS or a Lenovo limitation. You have a 4th gen CPU i7-4500u. The 16GB modules only work on 5th gen or later

Hey Lenovo Enthusiasts! I am about to purchase the Lenovo Thinkpad 550s, and I am tempted to purchase the baseline memory (4GB) and storage (512GB) HDD.  I want to make sure that I can indeed upgrade the memory to 16GB of RAM and the storage to a 256 (or 512) GB SSD. In my research earlier on, I noticed that somebody had posted a link to the parts list:https://download.lenovo.com/parts/ThinkPad/w550s_frubom_20150130.pdf I don't know what half of this technical jargon is, but from what I gather, I have found an SSD made by Samsung on Amazon, and an 8GB memory made by Data Memory Systems that seem to abide. SSD:http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-256GB-2-5-Inch-Internal-MZ-7KE256BW/dp/B00LMXBOP4 Memory:http://www.datamemorysystems.com/parts/lenovo/03X6657/ Questions:1) Could somebody wiser than me please verify that these products will work for the w550s? I was going to purchase them from Crucial, as they say that is is "100% compatible" but I am not sure still.Crucial: http://www.crucial.com/usa/en/compatible-upgrade-for/Lenovo/thinkpad-w550s 2) In regards to the warranty, does anyone know if I were to mess up the data preloaded on the HDD that is put in the laptop, by trying to transfer it to the SSD, would the warranty cover fixing this? Kind regards,Spencer

A:Lenovo Thinkpad W550s Memory upgrade to 16GB and S...

Very disappointing. Yes, I have the same problem (son, since it is your problem!). I note that over 189 people have at least looked at this question you asked before we decided to have you purchase the W550S...and after calling tech support one last time after my son purchased the machine (and was told there should be no issue)-we see BSOD multiple times within an hour.  They happen so quickly that it is hard to even note what the error message is.... I replaced his 512 HD with Samsung SSD 512GB drive. I used a disk duplicator-everything seemed to go great. Then I put in 16GB of RAM-again, everything seemed great. However, the notebook is only now being used frequently as my son is starting school now-and as said above, the BSOD is making me think this has something to do with the SSD or RAM replacement. Yes, obviously, it's fairly easy to replace with the original parts and see if the problem goes away-but he wanted the SSD and more RAM, so even if that fixes the issue-we will likely get rid of the notebook. BUT:  here is what disappoints me:  absolutely no comment on my son's original questions. I'm guessing I won't get input from Lenovo either....will try to call tomorrow, but we are almost beyond the point where we need to return the SSD/RAM and notebook if we want our money back. A little guidance from Lenovo would be appreicated before we need to make a decision.. Thanks,Steve

Inspiron 14z n411z (Laptop): Authoritative confirmation of memory upgrade to 16 GB, 16GB, 16gb

There are various claims that 14z/n411z can be upgraded to 16GB (unofficial or therotical based on CPU-i5 being Sandy bridge)

Here are the main issues on this subject that has left many customers scramble for answers and find themselves confused:
* It is the interest of customers that Dell come out with an official statement "confirming" or "denying" if this is possible
* Yes, at the time of sale Dell stated that max permitted was 8GB. But now therotically (Sandy Bridge CPU can support 16Gb) and based on other users experiments it seems possible, but no concrete/firm proof available.
* If it is possible, Dell can always state that it will not support 16GB, though it (Dell) has tested it as possible in their labs.
* In the absence of a confirmation from Dell, most memory vendors are not selling memory 16 GB upgarde for Inspiron using their "configurators".
* There is another confusing twist to this problem, created by the fact there is another Dell XPS model facing same problem. But they newer CPU, for which most vendors are selling the memory upgrade on their configurators.
* For Dell, most users are now "past their Warranty" period. There is no liability in answering this question. In the LARGER interest of customers Dell should clear this doubt.

Hi, After installing Windows 8.1 I've had big problems with my brand new Thinkpad S440. The laptop has generated systematic bluescreens, mostly related to the Intel Wireless-N 7260 WiFi module. Disabling it in the Device Manager helped a little bit, but I also get other Bluescreens related to e.g.. to "usbxhci.sys" and other modules. After the BSoD the laptop always goes into a reboot-loop at the Lenovo logo during the boot-up with the only solution do do a hard shut down (keeping the power-button pressed for 5 sec).  Yesterday I tried doing a fresh install, but it did not help at all. A few minutes after installing Win 8.1 from scratch the laptop generated a bluescreen. I have updated all drivers to the latest version, and also tried to solve it by installing an earlier version of e.g. the WiFi driver. Neither one has helped.  Below is a list of the minidumps generated during BSoD's I've had during the last 12 hours since installing a fresh copy of Windows 8.1.  Please, what can I do about this situation? I would not like to return the machine since I like the hardware, but in the current state my Thinkpad S440 is useless. I have not found a way going back to Windows 8.0, since the recovery partition on the HDD apparently was destroyed (according to an Microsoft engineer) during my first trial to update to Win 8.1. (the first update ended in a Black Screen of Death). Microsoft was only willing supply me with a Win 8.1 pr... Read more

Hi Kxer44, It's mainly a driver isuue as you noticed. Unfortunately I don't think much can be done about it for now. You will have to wait for Lenovo to release drivers compatible with windows 8.1. You will need to order a set of recovering discs from Lenovo and reinstall windows 8: http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/product-and-parts/detail.page?&LegacyDocID=MIGR-4M7HWZ Vince.

I just checked Lenovo Solution Center (latest verson) and it now reports that the max capacity RAM for my machine (A Thinkpad X1, not carbon, late 2011 i7 model) is 16GB, which I always thought was 8GB!I was wondering if I could stick in a 16GB RAM module then. has anyone done this? All memory modules of this type are 12800 but from what I read online this is fine and teh RAM stick will just be downclocked to 10666. Hopefully someone tried this out and can give some advice. If the memory modules of this type were a bit cheaper I'd give it a try regardless, but I am hoping to hear some feedback.

Hi there! Searching for a little while now I am wondering why the memory upgrade of my recently acquired notebook does not work as I hoped for. Then stumbled upon this forum so hopefully here somebody is willing and able to clarify the mystery... I did buy the notebook knowing (especially the graphics part of) the processor would greatly benefit from dual-channel memory so I was happy to notice I had two DDR3L-1600 8GB Samsung ones available. Installing was a piece of cake (of course) and the BIOS shows (correctly) two banks (bank 0 and bank 2) filled with 8GB each. So far so good. But then.. starting Linux I had the option of running a memory check: Memtest86+ 5.01 Then things got weird:- At the bottom of the screen Memory SPD information shows two times 8192 MB DDR3-1600 memory installed- Top left of the screen shows: Memory 7114M (???)- Middle of screen shows RAM 474 MHz (DDR3-948) (???) And within Linux I am told I do have about 6.7 GB of RAM installed. I am sure you can imagine I am puzzled and wondering if anyone has similar experiences or, even better, knows a solution.. as far as I can tell the memory should be compatible and I do not intend to buy other memory unless I am sure this would solve the issue. Thanks for reading!

The memory score won't change because of more memory. It only changes when there is faster memory put into the computer than what it already has, or if the current ram is overclocked to make it run at a higher speed.

10-31-2015 @ 4.25pm On the A740, I figured out that it will allow 16GB laptop RAM stick in its single memory slot. However, I did find out that a 16GB single-slot laptop memory stick will work on the A740and will get you to 16GB memory on only one memory slot (which the A740 has). The A730 was easier because it has two memory stick slots (so you could do 2 * 8gb = 16GB),but A740 only has one memory slot.  Therefore, you can not go with two of the cheaper 8gbmemory, because you have to spend more on the 16GB single-stick laptop.  So, hopethis helps other people.

Dear all, I bought a Thinkpad S440 in Germany a few years ago and additionally purchased an on-site warranty extension, which is valid internationally and allows a technician to come directly to your home to fix the problem. I already used that warranty option in Germany for a broken sound card and it worked perfectly. Technician came and solved the problem on site. Now, I'm living in Japan and my S440 suddenly doesn't boot up anymore if the battery is plugged in. Works when I unplug the battery. Tried the notorious "unplug and push the power button for 30s" tip in many different variations, but nada. Probably battery dead or Mainboard problem, who knows. I'd now like to use my international warranty option here in Japan, but the Japanese customer service said they don't have the parts here. According to them, I am supposed to ask the German customer service to send the parts to them. Problem is, I cannot call them in Germany and am also tired of solving that problem myself when I actually paid big money for that warranty pack. So, does anybody know a contact address of somebody in a higher hierarchy and can help me to escalate that problem? Maybe global warranty management or something? I feel lost and am really wasting my time here.  I would greatly appreciate any help. Best,Simon

Hello Community, I am missing a Rubber Feet on My Thinkpad S440. Unfortunately i cant find  which detailed partnumber this thing has. Contacting Lenovo and IBM Support was not very successfull till now. When i search for my modelnumber "20AY00BMGE" i can find the following parts:  00HM522 "Rubber kit(2).base.non-touch"00HM524 "Rubber kit(400).base.non-touch" But which one is the corret one? I would be very gratefull if you could help me (: Best Regards

A:Order Rubber Feet Thinkpad S440

Hi

I search for both part numers on the Internet without much luck. I even say a site where it says the "Rubber kit(400).base.non-touch" cames with 400 units which sound wrong (but you never know).

The only idea that cames to me mind is to ask for the price of both units. Maybe the price is low, since they are rubber feets, and you can order both just in case. I know it is dumb idea but I haven't found anything on the Internet about those parts.

Hello,  I recently had a problem with my Thinkpad S440 that I purchased 1,5 year ago. At some point it was not able to boot up for no apparent reason. As the warranty was no longer valid I had it expertised. The expertise showed that the screws on the hard drive were loose and one of them started to move inside of the laptop, causing a short circuit on the motherboard.Anyone ever had that problem ? Any idea on what I should do ?It seems to me that it is a huge problem of fabrication which I would not be able to avoid by myself... Sorry for my bad english and thank you for your answers.Cheers.

Hello, I am new here and I realy hope you can help me! I've have the Lenovo Thinkpad S440 (as in the description). It is the model with SSD, i5 U, Intel integrated graphics, 8GB Ram etc. The display which was build in was the HD+ matt model (1600x900 px) I've had some water in bag back pouring into the screen. I tried to fix it and after I disassembled the screen, I got all the water out of it but the backlight was not working anymore. So I ordered a new display. While I was looking for it, I came to the knwoledge, that you can take a replacement screen from the Lenovo Thinkpad T440s, at least considering that most 1600x900px displays seem to be the same for each of them. So I thought: okay, then I should be able to use the 1080p display for the t440s as well, since it also has a 30 pin eDP connector. So I ordered one and put it in my S440 and it fits perfektly. But now the display only gives a really dim short fliker while booting the machine and nothing is viewable, so the display stays completely black. Is there a possibility to fix it or can I only use the 1600x900 px displays on the s440? As I sayd the screen fits perfect and the 30 pin eDP connector also fits perfekt into the new display. If I use an external display via HDMI, the image is shown normal on this external screen. Also it seems that the new internal screen is not recognised, since in the intel graphics options I cannot chose it as the main screen, only if I go for dual screen it is an option. ... Read more

Previously I have factory Realtek wireless module and the same issue.  I though maybe switch to new module will help, but not. Windows 10. I can't work with this mouse. I tried different drivers and nothing help. Unfortunately I haven't another notebook to check mouse. Do you havy any idea? Have you encountered such a problem?

Hi, Someone any experience with replacing the standard 14" HD+ LCD panel (with bad vertical viewing angles) of a Thinkpad S440 ? I have checked the Lenovo FRU list for that model but didn't find any reference to a better alternative. Are there any thrid party matte HD+ or FHD IPS lcd panels that will fit in a Thinkpad S440. Modelnummer: 20AYCTO1WW  Kind Regards,Marc Willems

hello, I hope this is the right place to ask some Q about the IBM thinkpad G40 .. My son bought a second hand G40 some years back. It had/has only 256M memory. Now I want to upgrade the memory and I scanned the relevant web pages of Lenovo. Apparently the memory should be PC2100 or maybe PC2700 becasue of PC2100 availability ? (DDR)Now a cpu-z run on that laptop says the memory is PC2300 (142Mhz) so what gives ? Has this been put in to be on the safe side or ?and an additional Q .. can memory modules be mixed ? ie can I add a 512M PC2100 sodimm to get 768M ? or do I need to remove the original 256M and go for 2x 512M ?TIAImbsysop

A:Thinkpad G40 memory upgrade

Welcome to the forum! Your machine can run PC2100/2700 memory, and you can combine it, it will always run at PC2100 speed regardless of anything else. It can be mixed, no questions asked. If the G40 is Celeron powered, it will take up to 1Gb (2x512Mb) of RAM. If it's Pentium 4-powered, you can install up to 2Gb of RAM. Hope this helps.

Hello, I have a new x1 extreme gen 2 Part No: 20MFCTO1WW with 16 GB DDR4 2666MHz. I would like to go to 32 or 64 GB if I can.  Could anybody suggest what memory I should buy and where? Thanks in advance, Ricky

A:ThinkPad X1 Extreme memory upgrade?

You can have up to 64GB (2 X 32GB).  The part numbers for the 32GB SODIMMs are 01AG871 or 01AG861.  Other configurations are possible depending on thether you have 2 X 8GB or 1 X 16GB and what you want to end up with,

I am looking for memory upgrade options from 1x8GBSearching internet returns Crucial website for compatible sodimm  Option 1: get 1x 16GB  = total 24GBOption 2: get 2x 16GB = total 32GB Q1: I read some where that it is important to have two identical RAM. Perhaps I would go for option 2. Any suggestion Q2: For option 2, there are 2400 [CT2K16G4SFD824A] or 2666 [CT2K16G4SFD8266] version. The X1 unit came with 2666 8GB RAM, is it better to go for 2666 version, even through it is written in manual that the max support speed is 2400? Q3: Please share your choices for X1 extreme memory upgrade?

Howdy All! I just ordered a Thinkpad P70 with a XEON 1505-M processor. It comes with one 16gb ECC memory module. I want to add 3 more and when I checked Crucial.com's memory upgrade options, it only list 1x16GB NON-ECC memory modules! So two questions: 1) Can I mix the 1x16GB ECC memory module with 3 NON-ECC 1x16 modules? 2) How hard is it to install memory in the P70? My last couple of mobile workstations have been Dell M Precisions and adding memory was EASY (no need to remove the keyboard ,etc)! Thanks in advance! Aggie85

My last couple of mobile workstations have been Dell M Precisions and adding memory was EASY (no need to remove the keyboard ,etc)!About 1: It might be possible to mix ECC with non-ECC modules, but you would lose the error detection on all modules then. Since non-ECC modules are only slightly cheaper I would not recommend it. About 2: for the P50 it is a piece of cake to install memory, it should be no different on the P70.  As for memory: Lenovo currently uses Samsung modules. So if you want to go for the same 16GB ECC modules check for M474A2K43BB1-CPB. I do not know about Cruicial, but at least Transcend also got 16GB ECC modules (check for TS2GSH72V1B). I cannot say anything about the Transcend modules, but I installed two of the 16GB Samsung modules (besides the 8GB module that was already in) in my P50 had no problem so far (even checked with Memtest86+ for a whole night). Cubbi

Currently I am trying to upgrade memory modules on my ThinkPad P51 of type 20HH. It was planned to have maximum, i.e. 64 GB, instead of original 8 GB. After some research four of Crucial 16 GB DDR4-2400 SODIMM CT16G4SFD824A have been obtained. With absolutely no problems two of them have been inserted in slots under the bottom cover. On that stage the laptop starts up and works perfectly with total 40 GB of RAM consisted of new 32 GB and original 8 GB. However, after adding a new memory module under the keyboard and/or replacing original 8 GB memory module with new 16 GB, and/or even putting original 8 GB memory module in the neighbouring slot, the laptop doesn't start up. Several attempts have been done to solve this problem, i.e. BIOS has been updated to 1.47 version, CMOS battery has been removed and returned back to its place, SSD drive has been removed and returned back to its place, the laptop has been turned on with a battery only, with AC power adapter only and with both of them. Nothing of the listed above helped to solve a problem. Did someone face the same problem? Is there a solution for it?

Hi all, My Lenovo G575 is a few years old, but still works. I have only 1 RAM memory slot soldered onto motherboard. Windows 10 is installed, but quite slow on the internet. Can i upgrade RAM memory from 4gb 1066 speed to one single 8gb card? will it use 8gb or just 4gb? Any options to make internet faster, as i do have BT Fibre and only a few metres from router? Thanks all.

From the parts list of the Maintenance Manual - your computer will only accept 4gb modules.  If you only have one socket on the motherboard, you are limited to a single 4gb stick.  Usually the system has the option for two memory modules, so I would suggest contacting Lenovo support by phone to discuss this situation.

Cheers.
