I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I'm sorry if this sort of question is not supposed to be posted on the forums, but I'm planning on buying an internal hard drive and external enclosure for it. I noticed that a lot of external enclosures use USB 2.0, which I have on my laptop due to a PCMCIA card. However, I've heard that a USB 2.0 PCMCIA card does not provide power for the hard drive. Are there any hard drive options for me, either using USB 1.1 or USB 2.0 and another power source (such as an A/C adapter)?

A:External hard drive questions... shopping for one

You could get a powered USB hub to plug into your PCMCIA USB2 card, or get an external hard disk that has its own powersupply. If you get an external drive bay it will come with a powersupply, you then just install an internal drive in it.

So i finally took off the thin cover on my laptop to completely clean out the main fan (and took out a pair of dust bunnies in the process), and decided to take a peek at the HDD0 and HDD1, but noticed all there was in the HDD1 case was a cushion, so I went to Newegg to start shopping for something to fill the spot. Then I realized: I know nothing about hard drives, especially about multiple ones in a single machine. So I came back here to ask a few questions:
Do both hard drives have to be by the same manufacturer? The one I have is a Western Digital WD3200BEKT, so I was wondering if I could get a different brand or not.
Would the new hard drive "blend" with the original, adding to my hard drive space, or would it show up as a separate disk in My Computer?
Again, not knowing anything about hard drives, what would you guys suggest I buy, keeping in mind I do have a bit of a budget.
(Probably pulling this one out of my butt) Are there any solid state drives that are compatible with my laptop, or are they mostly desktop drives for the moment?
Would there be an installation process (software-wise) or would it be plug it in and play?
Would having two hard drives slow down my speed at all, or improve it, or have no effect?
Well that's all the questions I can think of for now. I'm gonna hold off on making a purchase until I know what I'm doing, and until I can afford something worth putting into my laptop.

Sup guys,

So far I have 3 failed drives/problems.

I'm looking to purchase a reliable hard drive that runs pretty cool. My old drives were so hot they were near untouchable. I believe one of my drives cooked itself. I have enough cooling for my system (but I don't hard any HD coolers). They were all Western Digital. 3 bad drives in 2 years

Can anyone recommend cool reliable hard drives, preferably sata drives?
Hopefully there is such a drive, if not I will have to resort to a HD cooler. Which maybe I must since I HATE these HD failures.

edit: well drives that get warm. unlike my drive it becomes untouchable.

A:Hard drive shopping. Cool and reliable?

i've never heard of drives specifically made to run cool. When i built my system 3 years ago, i kept having high cpu temps and after a few cooling upgrades, the temps were still high and it ended up being because I am using a RAID 0 with 2 hdd's and they just weren't getting any air flow. I recommend putting some fans at least in front of your hdd's. I mounted hdd coolers to the bottom of both of my hdd's and it has dropped my cpu temps 10 degrees. Make sure you aren't putting your pc in a closed cabinet of some sort. And make sure your case has a constant airflow preferrably from the front towards and out the back. Hope this helps...

I'm shopping for a new hard drive. My PC is a Gateway DX4822-01 still at mostly factory specs(stock motherboard, PSU, RAM, etc). We'll assume I intend to buy this drive and keep it stored away as a backup should my primary drive fail for some reason, that way I can just put it in and use it without delay.

My budget will probably be around the $75 mark and I'll likely get a 1 TB drive for that, but I am free to be a bit flexible.

1) Is it safe to buy these from Amazon? Will the pack securely? Or should I just buy from Newegg, or go to the nearest Best Buy and avoid any mailing whatsoever?
2) What's the current go-to brand, WD or Seagate?
3) assuming I go with WD, is the black worth the extra cost, or will blue suffice? I intend to avoid green, I have a green drive and I admit it's a bit slower than I care for. Though I've also heard the blacks can be a bit noisy. My basic use is mostly gaming.

A:hard drive shopping, need answers and input

I prefer buying from NewEgg & TigerDirect. Especially ON SALE with Free Shipping

I like Seagate & Samsung HDs

They have always come safely shipped & packaged.

I have a SATA reading USB stand, and it does a terrible job protecting my drives in any way, and my drive has fallen out and stuff so much that my main 1TB drive stopped working. I used the warranty and have a new 1TB Western Digital coming in the mail.

I'm looking for a USB-powered 3.5" Drive Enclosure that supports up to 1TB (or more). I'm sure something like this exists, and I have seen almost every variation of drives... except for this. I've found:
USB Powered 3.5" Enclosures for 500GB
AC Adaptor Powered 3.5" Enclosures for 1TB
USB Powered 2.5" Enclosures for 500GB

Is there one of what I need? I could use it soon...

Thanks a ton!

Hi again.. as mentioned in my last post, I'm shopping for a new comp.. I don't think I want to build it myself.. I have no idea how and I fear I'll screw it up.. Now, I read before that Dell is nearly considered profanity here, but I'm considering them- Don't flame!

I'm a little confused on a couple of the options available..

questions I have are: what would the performance difference between a 400MHz and 533MHz front side bus?

Gateway advertises Processor: Intel® Celeron® Processor 2.8GHz with 128K cache- what is that 128K cache for? They don't list the front side bus, is the cache the same thing or does the Celeron processor not need it? If it's the same thing, which is higher, or how do I covert?

finally, a lot of the processers list at 2600, 2200, ect.. how to I convert that to GHz?

I have a mach speed board modle is mk8-939a and I would love to put a new cpu in it that doesn't run over $35 not sure what to get if anyone could help thank u. It has a amd sempron modle # sda3000di02bi would like something faster.

A:Shopping for CPU (max $35)

eBay - socket 939 processors X2

I'm not sure which CPU's the motherboard will support, without seeing a support list. I did a quick search and didn't see a support list. Good luck.

Personally, I think its a waste of money unless you are replacing a faulty component. Keeping the machine going is one thing but spending money on a upgrade for such an outdated socket design is another.

Hi guys

Not posted on here for a while now, the new look is great.

Anyhow, was just wondering if there are any web-sites that sell to the UK. If there are, can savings be made due to the current low value of the $ when compared to the £. Or will customs add vat, tax etc making it pointless.

Just curious, any answers appreciated.

I am about to "go shopping" for a new ISP. Presently my provider's service varies from satisfactory to poor. When calling tech support, I sometimes think I know more than they do, for each time I am told something different and each time they change my "extra settings." At present it is working but have a terrible time getting my mail in Outlook Express. If any files come in containing pictures they take forever. I have timed 350kbs taking a half hour or more and large files 2 megs or more, sometimes "clog" and I have to keep closing OE out and reopening to get. Of course they blame my settings or my modem.
I have A Gateway PC with Windows ME. My modem is 56K PCI Voice Modem SF-11561VR9A. It has the latest updated driver and I have ran multiple tests on modem and they can find nothing wrong. Also I had other providers in past and had no problems with these things. I discontinued service from them for aother reasons.
My question is:
What questions should I ask when calling new providers? Is there a way to pin them down about connection speeds, speed of email downloading ect?

Okay, so I'm building a machine for a classmate [I ain't complaining, he pays p&s up front, I get $50] but its been a little while since I've been parts shopping. I've always been kinda leery of "off-brand" products. I know Asus is good, but, Does this seem safe?
He's a little "slow" and insists on a dual-core Intel, yet he wants something cheap. And I'll have a hot popsicle, please.
Anyway... he basically wants the PC for music, movies, and web surfing. So, I was thinking this processor with that mobo, a decent gpu [64 - 128 meg AGP; something cheap but reliable] and a reasonably nice sound card. Oh, and a trustworthy PSU.
Anywho. Thoughts on the mobo, and maybe a sound card suggestion? I've never actually bought one, myself....

Also with these upgrades will I need a case fan? Probebly get one anyway, they're fairly cheep. And a cpu cooler? again. not a very pricey item.
I'm trying to get this in under $250, looks like it wont be much of a problem.

I'm in the market for a new router that can support a small company (about 20 users). I need a DMZ for the web, ftp, and database servers, a private LAN for corporate network, and another separate LAN for the QA lab. VPN and domain hosting will also be needed. So, I'd like to get a router that can support multiple configurable LAN interfaces (at least 3?) and support 1 GHz bandwidth (all cabling throughout the office is cat6). I also need to support a wireless segment at 1GHz bandwidth as well, so I am also looking for a wireless access point as well. I currently have static IP addressing for 5 IPs but router and modem cannot support it so we have to use dsl service from old location with dynamic IP addressing (a new modem may be necessary as well). My ISP (AT&T) recommended netopia 3347 modem/wireless router, but I notice it only supports 100MHz bandwidth. Any suggestions? It looks like I need:

1) New modem
2) New router
3) New wireless access point

There's a couple switches I need to upgrade, but I can do that later.

I'm writing for a friend who has a fairly new HP desktop and is running Windows 7 and IE9. As far as I know she did not previously have this trouble as I know she has done a lot of shopping online in the recent past. It's just been recently this has happened.

When she shops at a site, there is nothing provided for her to click on so that she can check out. Does anyone know what could be causing this? Does it have anything to do with IE 9?

A:Can not checkout after shopping

Not knowing the sites with the problem, I will assume that there is an icon to sign out. If it cannot be seen check the DPI. If that does not work try the resolution.

Hi, I'm in the market for a laptop, and I was wondering where good places for cheap laptops are. The specs I am hoping to get are:

Pentium 1.4 GHz
256 mb RAM
32 meg video card
40 gig HD
DVD drive
Ethernet port
Windows 98SE-compatible hardware (I loathe XP)

any good places to search/ models to search for would be appreciated.

Well, I'd rethink the W98 aspects, and I'm sure no new notebook will come with that option. If you look around, you'll find the Averatec models are pretty cheap right now, and they're decent machines. I have one of those, and I just saw BestBuy selling one for $749 after rebate.

Needing to pick up a laptop for work... the main criteria is a high-resolution screen (1600x1200-ish). Doesn't necessarily need to be a BIG screen, but it needs the rez. Cost is a factor as well, hoping to keep withing the CDN$1000 range... stuff like WiFi, Bluetooth, etc are nice, but not critical. Oh yeah, and does ANYONE besides IBM make a laptop anymore with something OTHER THAN those stupid horrid useless F*@[email protected] touchpads?

Not looking so much for specific recommendations (although if anyone has any to offer, it's appreciated), but what would be helpful is a site where I can check specs and reviews BASED ON the resolution. All of them I've been able to find so far let you select based on processor, RAM, drive space, size, weight... just about anything BUT resolution.

Hi, I am shopping for a laptop for the fall semester. It's not easy. My knowledge of computers is "somewhat"

If anyone can help me, I cam finding these terms all over the place. What do they mean? Is this something I need? Basically I need a laptop to do basic Microsoft office stuff and surf the web.

1. 32gb express cache......what is this? Do I need?

2. Windows Home Premium....does this matter? I just want to do the above.

3. 4-way processing What is this? Should I care

these are all from the latest Worst Buy ad.....

A:Shopping for a laptop

Hi, If you don't include the 10 inch netbooks in your search, they are not really good enough for serious work, then almost any 15 inch laptop will be more than good enough for office and web work.
The cache is an area in the processor where often used code is held, to use it more quickly.
4 way processing probably means a quad-core processor, this is really for the highest performance games pc's where high speeds and two and three screens are used, again not very relevant for what you mentioned.
Much more important to look out for Office software, which is generally not installed on new pc's, but some makers do 'give away' the starter edition of Microsoft Office. That includes Word & Excel.
It could be the most used software you would need, and the popular version of 'Office' is 'Home and student', the details are all on Microsoft's web site.
Many people do use the free Office package Libre Office, which will do almost exactly the same, and can open and save files in the new Microsoft formats. ( ie, .docx and xlsx.) That one can be downloaded and used for free, but Microsoft Office costs 'real' money, and for university students there is a discount on Microsoft Office software, I believe it used to be 66% or so.
The Home premium reference is the normal version of Windows 7, the next version up is 'Professional', which gives a few more options, but costs much more. I don't consider it worth the ext... Read more

I'm on a pretty tight budget and i've pretty much hit the ceiling with this setup. I picked the A8V deluxe because it has built-in firewire (i have an external firewire HD for storage) and is apparently a really tried-and-true board and should serve my purposes. The ASUS boards above this one (A8V-E, A8V-E deluxe) have reports of the chipset fan becoming a problem.

The hard drives however, im not sure if i should go IDE or SATA. People on newegg.com said that SATA is tricky to setup with this board, that the drives require drivers to be loaded via floppy. This is my first build, and I really would like it to be a successful and painless one. Anyways, I figure I can buy a SATA later on.

Lastly, do I need to buy a floppy drive? Is it necessary to flash the BIOS or whatever? (this is another thing ive never done ... Read more

Even though my system is only 3 years old i thought i might shop around for a new motherboard to see if i can get some better gaming benefits. I do work and play on this system, i do graphics, i game, and i code in php, and i do photoshop. So its an all in one pc. But i would like to get some better gaming performance especially since i run two monitors i think i need a better motherboard.

I have been doing some looking around at different sites, newegg and others and trying to do some comparison with regard to specs. But i just cant seem to decide (or learn) what features i need to be looking for.

Are there like 5 or 10 top things to look for in a new motherboard, are there things standard that i dont need to worry about such as chipset, usb ports, or do you just simply get one that matches the same or similar rear panel setup so i dont have to re-organize the rear connection plates. I have never purchased a MB alone before so any tips would be greatly appreciated.

here is my current motherboard

Well; i would take a few moments; and list what you feel is most important you in terms of specs etc. Since you said you use it for gaming etc. I would probably recommend at least 8-12gb ddr 3 ram; and for the processor since you do coding, etc. I would go for something like a Intel I5 at the very least but if you can afford it; I would go with a higher end processor like the I7 also from Intel. For graphics you can either choose a board with extra slots to allow for a separate standalone graphics card or you can just use built in onboard graphics. As far as brands go; one of the better brands out there is what i have which is Asus. They are one of the better quality manufacturers of motherboards. But one thing to keep in mind is you also need to measure the inside of your case so you get something that will fit. I would get a board also with a few extra usb ports on back for sure. That way you have ports for additional usb devices.

We are looking for laptop users to weigh in on our search for my wife's new laptop.

She will be using it (almost) exclusively at home, therefore it will be plugged into an outlet most everywhere she takes it around the house. She will be using the laptop for minor business applications but mostly enjoyment. Vista appears to pretty much be what the "big box" stores and everyone else is selling, so it looks like that will inevitably pre-loaded.

She would like a minimum 15 inch screen, and from what I know (which isn't a ton), she will want a processing speed of at least around 1.7 or above and a RAM of at least 2GB (since we have been told by several people that Vista alone will take about 1GB and will slow anything less than 2 GB down). We have looked at Toshibas, HP's, and Sonys, etc, but would consider anything anyone has a strong feeling about. This would include Acers (which we know nothing about) and pretty much any other manufacturers out there with a reliable product. I have not highly considered Dell because we have owned a few (desktop and laptop) and I have not always been happy with them for a variety of reasons(just a personal thing I guess). But I would not want to "cut off my nose to spite my face" if they (Dell) have a laptop out there to consider. We would like to keep things in the range of no higher than $900 or so.

After wending my way through the dual cores, AMD vs. Pentium, Centrinos, etc, I thought it would make sens... Read more

Just got thru building my new computer and would like to get something that really ROCKs for a monitor.

So far I've tried a used SGI 24" Sony tube CRT.
Which I didn't care for I think because it was a wide screen and not flat and it distorted the display.

And a AG Neovo F-419 19in LCD Monitor.
Which had issues like dead picels and backlight wash out.

I guess I'm spoiled with my 5 year old Hitachi 17" CRT that has a low dpi (.22 I think) and a excellent picture. I run it at 800 x 600 and 120 hz.

I use the computer to surf the web, try out new software, listen to music, email, shop, watch video's and look at pictures (yes I like girls and rock and roll)

I'd like something bigger but can't seem to find anything I'm happy with yet. Maybe I'm just to picky but I want something awesome to go along with my new build (Master Control)

Any Thoughts?

I've been looking into buying a new pc and since I'm not big on tech stuff thought I'd ask your opinion.

Basically what I need is a pc to be fast, mainly to surf the internet, download stuff. I'm not a gamer, all I need it to handle is maybe an occasional game of Sims but still, I would like to have the possibility to play something else if I ever wanted to.
I suspect most new machines would handle this sort of work but I plan on using it for a long time so I want to make sure that it's not going to be too out of date after a few years. But then again, maybe I should pick something less powerful/cheaper?
What do you think about this:

Intel® Core™ i5-2300 2.80Ghz / 4GB DDR3 / 1000GB / GeForce GTS 450 1GB

Thanks a lot!

A desktop with 3 or 4 GB of memory and a 500 GB or more hard drive can be bought for about $350 (plus display) an should be adequate for your needs.

Note if you plan to use an old printer you may need a USB to parallel adapter since new computers do not come with the old parallel interface.

I didn't know how to contact Jennifer at HP shopping except to call the unlisted 888 number.  Support won't let me email.  The Office 2013 got a dll error and I did an online fix which uninstalled Office then by default tried to intall a 32 bit Office into my 64 bit Windows 10 and fizzled.  Without a product key, I could not reinstall Office 2013.  After I talked to you Jennifer about finding a product key for the Office 2013 that came installed with my laptop without a postcard listing the key, I contacted Microsoft.  They logged into my computer remotely and found the ID key embedded in the computer.  Next they had to install Advanced Uninstall Pro to uninstall the temp Office 365 - 30 day program I had installed.  Next they installed Office 2013 and it works with no errors.  I have a reinstall button for Office 2013 in my Microsoft account now - so it works.  I guess I will do the same for my desktop which also came with no product key for the Office 2013 installed.Geoh

I have brought your issue to the attention of an appropriate team within HP. They will likely request information from you in order to look up your case details or product serial number. Please look for a private message from an identified HP contact. Additionally, keep in mind not to publicly post personal information (serial numbers and case details). If you are unfamiliar with how the Forum's private message capability works, you can learn about that here.

Hi: I am currently shopping for a new PC desktop computer for home use. I cannot decide whether I should buy a Dell desktop or an HP, and whether or not to purchase it with Windows 7 or 8 operating system. Also, what do I need to know about the processors for a new PC desktop. Do I need to be knowledgeable about processors, speed, memory, etc? What are all the particulars you need to look for when purchasing a brand new desktop computer today, with a new monitor, keyboard, speakers, etc.
Thank you so much for your assistance and advice with this matter. BTW, there willl be only 1 adult and 1 10th grader using this computer, and we do not use it for gaming. It will be used exclusively for processing documents, social networking, research, educational purposes, and photography with PhotoShop for beginners. Also, my teenager will be using YouTube constantly, for makiing and viewing videos. She is very interested in photography so I need a computer that has great picture quality and is good for video streaming.

Thanks Again,

A:Shopping for New PC Desktop

Personally, I would only buy a new desktop computer with a
1— Supports more than 4 GB RAM (memory)
this means a 64-bit Operating System won't be limited to 4 GB RAM and choke
2— 64-bit Operating System (for future proofing)
3— an i5 3rd Gen or i7 3rd Gen CPU.
(i3 would work if you weren't editing graphics).

If you find a model, post it here and someone may advise you

Hello and thanks for stopping in this thread to help!

I haven't built a PC in awhile and just need some direction.

I am buying this CPU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103849

And Just need some Mobo ideas to get the most out of it. Also what type of Ram is going to pair well with this?

I plan on Running Windows 7 64bit. With Approx 8GB of memory. I do alot of multitasking while gaming!

I have newegg giftcards to use so that limits me to what is available on the site. I guess I dont need specific links, just some things to look for in pairing this hardware. I dont think ill need to OC but down the road i'd like to experiment.

Thanks again for helping me get back into the swing of things!!

i am shopping for a new scanner; i currently have an hp scanjet 3200 C; it's specs are 600x1200 dpi, 30bit color.

for my new scanner, i want a scanner with considerable better resolution than my old one; i am not happy with my current scanning resolution. in addition, it must work with win xp.

i was browsing on the hp website, and noticed a 2400 x 2400 dpi, 48 bit scanner for $199.

on the epson website i noticed a $49 epson 1200 x 2400 dpi 48 bit, and a $129 1600 x 3200 48 bit scanner.

both are considerably less than the hp, but i dont know how their qualtity will compare.

if anyone could let me know how a 2400 x 2400 dpi scanner compares to a 1200 x 2400 and a 1600 x 3200 scanner, and if it is a considerable difference worth the extra money, your help would be greatly appreciated.

You might want to read this: http://www.scantips.com/basics08.html Go to the next page where he uses a photo he took with a fixed focal length Nikon on a tripod and couldn’t get more detail scanning over 300PPI.

A 600 X 1200 scanner is 600PPI optical – the second number is the number of stops the motor will make and is basically meaningless. Scanning photos you won’t get any better resolution than scanning at 300PPI, so you don’t really need more resolution than you have.

More expensive scanners tend to be faster and give better color and shadow detail. Resolution over 600 is good only for film and slides. Your scanner is basically point and shoot. You might want to learn to tweak them up in a photo editor after you scan them.

Any current model of scanner will work on XP.

You would probably get better color rendition and shadow detail with a newer model 48 bit scanner. And it would almost certainly be faster if you don’t buy one of those skinny ones that get their power from the USB. Those use CIS rather than CCD sensors and tend to be slower and don’t have any depth of field. You can get a nice scanner for under a hundred dollars. The Epson you saw for $49 is probably a nice scanner if you don’t want to control the scan – it will be point and shoot like your HP.

Read the “better way” section of the Scantips site I linked. If you think you want to use the histogram to get better scans don’t buy an Epson. The histogram is a lot easier to use that it initially ... Read more

Since I'm not too knowledgeable in the graphic card and case area, I was wondering what cards (looking for a pcie card) and case names you recommend? I don't mind paying, maybe like $130 for a card, or less. And $100 or so for the case. I don't need anything all fancy (not a gamer).

I order from newegg.com, so anything from their site would be great.

You can put in anything you want as long as it will fit in the case, have sufficient enough power supply, and what your budget allows.

I've decided to build my own pc, for the first time. I've come up with a little shopping list, and was wondering if somebody could run over it, and tell me what you think.

Power -
Mobo - P5n-E SLI
Processor - Intel Quad Q9400
Cooler -
Memory - Kingston Hyper-X 4GB
HDD - Samsung SATA 1TB
GFX - GTS 250 1GB
Case - ThermalTake M9W

As you can see, I haven't found a Power Supply or CPU Cooler, so If you can recommend me one, I'd be grateful

Also, I think you should know:

The PC will be used mainly for Gaming.
It will be rarely turned off.
I like it to be quiet.
I don't really know much about OverClocking or any of that.
I'll be running Vista Home Premium.

So yeah, If somebody could see if they're all compatible or if something should be different or if i've forgotten something.
