Cannot zoom in Windows Picture Viewer (Win 7-64) using Microsoft mouse

Q: Cannot zoom in Windows Picture Viewer (Win 7-64) using Microsoft mouse

Hi,

I am using a microsoft mouse on Win 7-64. In Windows Picture Viewer the mouse wheel won't zoom the image in and out. (yes I make sure I left clicked it.) The wheel scrolls fine in ie9beta.

What could cause this? Something I can check in the registry?

The mouse drivers are the vanilla drivers you get when installing Windows 7-64.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

A: Cannot zoom in Windows Picture Viewer (Win 7-64) using Microsoft mouse

Though this doesn't directly answer your question, I use xnview and set it as default for viewing images. I do so because it's free, you can improve the photos, resize, whatever you need to do.

Find a .jpg file to open and right-click on it. Then click on "Open With" and then "Choose Program".

Select Windows Picture and Fax Viewer and check the box "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file".

If you have other image file types like .png or .tif that you use go through the same procedure with them.

After much searching I'm back to this forum for some help!   All of a sudden I'm not able to open pictures in Microsoft Office Picture Manager as they only open in Microsoft Photo Viewer.  Right clicking on the photo 'Open With' will not open in Office Manager but in Photo Viewer.  I have checked the defaults and they are correct.   I have uninstalled Malwearbytes as one post indicated file extension exes. can be missing or changed to nothing at some point because of that software.  Also have went to the registry but FileExtensions file is not there but a FindExtension is and could not continue with suggestions for correction.  Look forward to some help!  Thanks a lot!...........Candy  (I do run RegServe)

Hello all,

I have absolutely no idea what has happened to my computer. It was working fine when I left, when I cam home I have lost all my icons(shortcuts). My wife said that she tried to copy some pictures from her SD card to the hard drive. I have no idea if this caused the problem, but all of my icons are leading to the microsoft photo viewer. Does anyone have any idea how to fix this?

Thanks in advance.

Hello Darrin,

Downloading and merging the lnk (LNK) option in the tutorial below should be able to fix this for you. It will restore the default associations of lnk (shortcut) files.

Within the last few days, when I open a folder with pictures in it, the thumbnails don't appear as they usually do, its just little icons with the picture title and 'JPEG Image' on it, and when I try to open them Windows Picture and Fax Viewer doesnt work, I have to open them all individually on other programmes such as paint. I have tried all the methods I have seen on solving this problem on Google, such as by going onto Run and typing in: regsvr32 /i shimgvw.dll but none of them have worked, it just says ' "shmgvw.dll" is not an executable file and no registration helper is registered for this file type.'

Does anyone know what I can do to fix it?
Thanks.

A:Windows Picture and Fax Viewer help

Are you sure that you typed it correctly? regsvr32 /i shimgvw.dll
You misspelled it where you said it is not an executable. Also, spaces after 2 and i.

If you spelled it correctly, go to the Windows\System32 folder and rename shimgvw.dll to something like shimgvw.dlx. Windows file protection will replace it. Try the regsvr32 command again.

Does anyone know what the name of Windows Picture and Fax Viewer is in the Processes Tab of the Task List Manager?
The reason I ask is because sometimes at work the program will fail to launch because an instance of it is still running in the background. It doesn't show up in the applications Tab after I CTRL ALT DEL but I am pretty sure that it is in the processes secion (I just cannot find it).

Thanks in advance

A:Windows Picture and Fax Viewer

Good question

It does not add anything to Processes when I launch it, but it may use the windows service host svchost.exe, but in XP you cannot tell what is running behind svchost.exe very easily.

You might be able to do some detective work with process explorer to find out. WP&FV uses a dll, so you might want to use DLL mode in PE, or what process if any is hosting "shimgvw.dll"

hi all, this may seem an odd thing to ask, but does anyone know where the windows picture and fax viewer is located, and if there is any easy way to change the background collour ? ( instead of boaring white ).

A:windows picture and fax viewer

I 'm not sure about changing the background color but you can access the picture and fax viewer as quoted here from Help and Support Center within xp

Using Windows Picture and Fax ViewerUsing Windows Picture and Fax Viewer, you can view, rotate, and perform basic tasks with image documents, including fax documents, without opening an image editing program. You can transfer pictures to your computer from a digital camera or scanner, and you can view images as thumbnails. You can also view your pictures in a slideshow and annotate your fax documents.

If you store your pictures in the My Pictures folder, the images are automatically displayed, either as thumbnails or as images on a filmstrip. You can try out different views of your images in My Pictures by clicking the various commands on the View menu. Experiment to get the look you want.

Open My Pictures, then double-click an image to open it in Windows Picture and Fax Viewer.

Notes

To open My Pictures, click Start, and then click My Pictures.

Newbie here,
Using windows xp. I have done a search on these forums with no success. When I get e-mailed a photo as an attachment and open it, the photo shows up on the Windows & Fax Viewer. If I click on the foward or back buttons on the viewer I will see literally hundreds of images. They are anything from parts of a web page to items that I have looked at on e-bay. You name it anything I have looked at and and even things I can't remember ever seeing are in there. The only way I have been able to get rid of them is to delete them individually and empty the recycle bin. As a side note, I have never been able to find the picture and fax viewer unless it opens as stated above.(when someone sends an attachment) Any help would be appreciated.

A:Windows picture and fax viewer

The reason you are seeing "literally hundreds of images" is that the picture and fax viewer will go through the images that are in the folder that you are looking at - the folder your email attachments go to automatically is the Temp (temporary files) folder which is where all those images you have looked at on the net also go to so that you can see them again when on the net without your computer downloading them again.
When you open an image file that is stored on your computer it should open in the picture and fax viewer unless you have another viewer on your computer which has been set (or set itself) as the default viewer for image files (jpg, bmp, png etc.)

A:Windows Picture and fax viewer in XP

Try this. First get the path to the program you want to use to edit the filetype.

For example C:\Program Files\whatever\whatever.exe
In this example I will use gifs

Open the registry. Navigate to
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\giffile\shell

Right click on shell and create NEW>Key
Name the key edit

Right click on Edit and create New>Key
Name the key command

Look in the right pane, You'll see an entry named Default. Double click on that . In the Edit String box which will appear, fill in the Value data like this:

Path space %1

C:\Program Files\whatever\whatever.exe %1
Now the default editor for gifs is whatever.exe

For jpegs you would look for
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\jpegfile\shell

and do the same thing

I have computers with Windows XP and Windows 2000 operating systems. Now, on the XP box, the default image viewer is Windows Picture and Fax Viewer, which I love very much. However, it is not available on the Windows 2000 side. Does anyone know how to get the viewer? Is it possible to copy the viewer to the Windows 2000 box, and if so, what file to copy?

If it is not possible to copy the file or otherwise obtain the viewer, what software would you recommend that works pretty much the same as Windows Picture and Fax Viewer?

And if at all possible, It would be best if the program is just a runnable .exe with no installation needed.

XP is recognising the fact that I've connected a camera, it beeps as usual, but no pop up box. I like this feature as it was quick to select Picture and Fax Viewer and review the pictures before editing them.

The pictures are transferred but I now have to open a specific application to view them.

The pop up box still appears if, for example, I insert an audio CD.

I'm using XP Home SP2 and the camera is a Nikon.

Any ideas?

Thanks
