Windows 8 Display + Digitizer driver problem (Lenovo All in One: B540)

Q: Windows 8 Display + Digitizer driver problem (Lenovo All in One: B540)

Not sure whether I should have posted this in Hardware or Windows 8 or hardware.

Against my better judgement, I bought a Lenovo B540 all in one computer that ran Windows 8. It was beautiful, it ran well and fast... until 3 months later when my 2 year old took a metal hole punch to the side of the screen. For the first week, it wasn't a big deal. I could still use the mouse fine, I could even touch it if I wanted (But I figured that it was a bad idea). The crack was on the far left high corner of the screen, so it only ventured a hairline into the actual display and was not a distraction at all.

Nearing week 2, the digitizer started going out. It started pulling my mouse near the cracked corner of the screen when I tried to use it. I tried calling Lenovo tech support, and they were useless. They just read to me things that I had already learned from looking online. They are trained monkeys that know how to read and operate a mouse.

Apparently, Windows 8 has tied their display driver in with the one that operates the touch screen, so there is NO WAY to disable the display driver. I tried all that I could while the screen still worked. Nothing that I tried, or found worked in time.. Because when the touch screen went down for good (as I thought it might) it took the display with it.

I can turn it on, hear it work, but the main problem is that the two are tied together and my mouse is geared up towards the upper left corner and I cannot see it.

If I could just install a version of Windows that has it's own display driver with it, instead of tying it to my now dead digitizer, this would work. But my screen is completely black and dead.

Any ideas?

(BTW.. Don't buy Windows 8 if you have kids in the house)

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

And... I know that I can send it in to the trained monkeys to diagnose and repair it for a one time $85 fee. But they will not give me a quote on how much it will cost to replace the digitizer before I send it. The customer service rep said

" I know that it costs around $350 to replace a laptop screen, but I am not sure about a touch screen" * SMH... I could replace a laptop screen for $50-$100!!!. How much are they GOING to charge. I am not going to gamble $85 on the chance that they will charge me more than it cost to buy my computer in the first place.

I asked if I could buy the all-in-one case including the touch screen, digitizer, lcd.

"Well, no... repairing these is such a delicate process that we simply do not allow these parts to be sold"

FML!!! This is exactly why I have never bought an Apple. Lenovo is no better than Apple. They assume that you, the customer, are entirely dumb and cannot put the insides of your existing computer into a new screen/case.

Gah.. Should have bought a desktop. But there's my rant. Never buy an all-in-one if you have a child who might destroy the screen in the house. ESPECIALLY not Lenovo, because not only will they not quote you a price on repair, they won't even sell you the parts to repair it yourself.

My PC starting showing a blank screen yesterday, even though I know it is on.  I have dual monitors and the attached monitor would come on but not display anything because it is only displays once I am logged into the primary Lenovo machine.  Today, I was able to just put in my password (without seeing what was happening on the blank screen, but just assuming it was at the login prompt) and login and got the second monitor to come up.  I was able to get to the Graphics properties on the attached monitor and make the second monitor the primary monitor and I made them cloned monitors instead of extended.   So, now I am able to use the computer with the second montior displaying, but the Lenovo monitor is still blank.  Any ideas on why it is blank and how I might fix it?

Hi! I recently bought the Lenovo Yoga 460 and the Lenovo Thinkpad Active Capacitive Pen. When drawing I experience problems with "cursor jittering" trying to draw a smooth line is impossible. Even if I place a ruler on the screen and draw the line end up jagged and bumpy. It's the same using both the built in pen and the Active pen, and in every art program. The effect is worse if I try to draw slow. Is this normal? Is the digitizer this bad? /Tobias

I teach computer applications at a private school. We just purchased 6 Lenovo A600 all-in-ones to use for our yearbook class. We wiped them and installed Windows XP SP3, Office 2007, InDesign and Photoshop CS3, etc.

These computers came with Windows Vista Home and were not configureable (i.e. we could not get any hardware or software changed at the factory). However, when I installed Windows XP, I was able to get drivers for XP from the the Lenovo website. All of the worked except for the Intel(R) GMA driver for the display. Although I installed the driver, the computer won't recognize the screen and let me change the resolution to 1900 x 1080. Instead it uses a default 1024 x 768 setting.

How can I fix the drivers so that the screen will display properly?

I believe that you system came with either a RealTek  RTL8188CE 802.11b/g/n or Atheros AR9485 802.11 b/g/n WiFi adapter, which only support the 2.4Ghz band, so if you want to take advantage of the 5Ghz speeds, your best option will be to invest in a USB WiFi adapter that supports 802.11ac.   They are usually described as "dual band", 802.11ac or 600Mbps and come in a variety of types and range from less than $15.00 USD, to over $50.00 depending on features, and whether they are a Chinese knockoff or name brand.    I would recommend that you spend a bit more and go with a well known brand, because they are usually built better, and are more likely to provide updated drivers should Microsoft make updates to the OS.   Cheaper knockoff generally have no support site etc. but they are cheap, so you will have to make the call. Also, depending on your distance from the WiFi router, you may want to invest in one with a larger external antennae to boost the WiFi signal reception vs the smaller ones that barely protrude from the USB port. Once you get a new adapter, you will need to run Setup on your computer and disable the built in WiFi adapter in the BIOS. Cheers,

so i have a ideacentre b540 and when you turn it on the screen flickers red/pink and green all over.  basically it looks like scrambled porn from back in the 80's and 90's.   i connected another display via the hdmi and that screen comes up perfectly.  so i'm thinking that the display needs to be replaced.   anyone have any suggestions or sources to buy the screen?   or perhaps i just need the backlight display as the glass itself is fine? or is this a known issue with an easy fix? thanks.

A:ideacentre b540 image issue/display replacement

Hi ac2b  ,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

Since the external display is working fine , we may eliminate possible drivers issue.
At this point it may be either a cable or the LCD module .

If you have the tools and experience on reseating ( unplug and replug the LCD cables page 55).
Click on the page link and check if theres anything impinging the cable .
If cables are isolated as good then it may be needing ordering the entire LCD module/ panel .

Check for the Lenovo part number for the LCD using your serial number here or on the sticker behind.
If you could provide just the machine number so that we can confirm.  Keep your Serial Number confidential.
Look up for your warranty here and you can also call tech support for the service or parts pricing and availability.

Update us how it goes.

Good day all I have installed Windows 10 Pro 64-bit on an old Lenovo G550. It used to work well on Windows 7, but now I cannot install or update the display drivers in order to connect an external display (LG 49" TV) at 1920 x 1080. Windows installed its own useless drivers that obtains at least 1366 x 768 on both the laptop and the TV when displays are duplicated. Then the highest I can go is 1366 x 768. When I select "Show only on 2" (which is essentially what I want to do), it goes down to an even worse display resolution, but this also disables the Resolution drop-down.  I have downloaded every version of drivers know to God and man from Lenovo's and other sites, but all of them tells me: "This computer does not meet the minimum requirement for installing software." I have deleted the driver and reinstalled via "Scan for hardward changes" as well. I have done a Windows update as well. I have no idea what to do next. How do I fix this stupid problem? Please help me. Thank you in advance.Kind regardsRenier

Upon recieving my X1 Yoga OLED, I had an issue where every time I woke the computer from sleep or switched to tablet mode, the display would flicker black a few times and the computer would sometimes restart. I'd get a critical event, kernel event 117. A little research led me to update the display driver. It was already up to date, but reinstalling the Intel display driver fixed the issue. Soon after, I noticed that changing thecolor settings made no change to the display. I knew it worked prior to reinstalling the display driver. As advised in another thread here, I reinstalled the system interface foundation driver (again, was originally up to date), and this fixed the color settings issue. However, the original issue came back! I'd obviously rather have the display working properly, so I again reinstalled the display drivers. Sure enough, the color setting issue is back. Seems like these two drivers aren't playing well together. Any ideas on how to get around this? Thanks.

Hello So straight to the point. My Lenovo IdeaPad y70-70 touch (IPS 1080p screen) had a little accident and now touch screen is shattered into pieces. Well it's still functioning but it's kind of difficult to see through.   I was wondering if any 17 inch Lenovo laptops share the same touch screen part AKA digitizer? And another option would be.  To use plastic screen bezel from non touch version of Lenovo y70 (?or other compatible model?) after separating IPS panel from digitizer.  Also known part numbers or suggestions and where can I get them would be very welcome.

I had wanted to buy the Yoga Home 900 for a while but the lack of a 4K resolution display or a digitizer with stylus has kept me from buyinng this. Then to see Microsoft come out with the Surface Studio and all the attention they garnered made me realize how Lenovo had an even better product in the Yoga Home 900 but they never had the foresight to update it for professional users who work for a living. Seems like the Yoga Home 900 was designed as a toy when it has so much potential as an actual productivity workstation. If lenovo updates the Yoga Home 900 with a 4K display and a digitizer with stylus and preferbly Thunderbiolt 3/USB C ports along with a design that allows hard drive and memory upgrades they will actually have a product better than the Surface Studio. Since it has a bettery it will also then have the added benefit of being mobile within an office or home envioronment. So how hard is to update the Yoga Home 900 with a digitizer/stylus and 4K display and end up with the best PC experience available to buy? It seems like a nobrainer. Am I missing something? Why is this not a product I can pay a bunch of money and buy?

Okay, so I just recently (today) installed Windows Professional 64 bit edition on my roommates computer. Before that, it had Media Center Edition, 32 bit. (it's an athlon 64bit proc. btw)

Anyways, install went fine, everything worked great and seemed a little faster until I tried to install the network, audio, and display drivers.

So first I tried to install the network driver that I had copied from the internet off an external hard drive off of dell.com . So that didn't work - long story short, it took me about an hour to find the proper driver just for the NIC, and I had to find it off of broadcom.com and pretty much just guess and check.

But there is a problem - whenever I go to websites, or even move windows around, it takes a second to sort of reiterate the image on the screen, and makes lines and then refreshes very slowly. It happens whenever I scroll down a page, restore a window or move like say display properties for example. I even turned off 'show window contents while dragging' and it still does it!

Now I understand that this might be a display driver issue, since it's running off the basic VGA driver. So I was trying for hours trying to find a new display driver that would work with the 64 bit edition of xp pro, and I can't. I'm pretty sure I even found some that said it was for this exact version, but no, still won't install.

The same thing happens with the Sigmatel 92xx onboard audio. I find all different types of d... Read more

I constantly get a "Display driver has stopped responding and recovered" error ever since I upgraded to Windows 10.  The error references Windows 8.

This happens repeatedly at varying periods when I play a game, "Age of Empires: Castle Siege".  Even if the game is minimized in the background.  I contacted the game company's help desk and they indicated I needed to update my drivers to Windows 10.  I've used the Dell Support webpage and it indicates my drivers are current.  When I actually examine the driver information, it indicates they are Windows 8.1. Evidently, Dell feels the driver is sufficient for Window 10.   I've logged onto the Intel site and Intel has a new driver that supports Windows 10 for the card.  I cannot install it, however, because it indicates I have a "vendor-specific" Dell copy of the driver.  It won't let me replace it but Dell doesn't have a Windows 10 equivalent.
Anybody got any ideas when Dell is going to support Windows 10 drivers for the Inspiron 14R or if there is some alternate solution?

Yet this time it stopped for at least 15 minutes, and I had to switch to pen and paper to take note of the meeting. During that time, I try to restart the computer by hitting the power button. Until the third time, the screen was coming back to me. This is very awful.  I bought this machine and heard the rumor that its display driver is not good. But I DO NOT expect it to be that bad. Before the major incident above, the driver did stop 3 times in the past, but it restarted within second. I did a little research and knew that other users had to deal with that too. So I thought that once in a while the screen will die for several seconds, and it was ok with me.  Yesterday, during my meeting, stop more than 15 minutes. Unbelievable!!!.  I want to return the product. Please guide me through this process. If I have to pay the 15% fee, I will do it.

Hello folks,

I seem to be having multiple problems all at the same time (all of which may or may not be related) but let me start from the beginning.

This all started when I tried to connect my Inspiron 1720 laptop to our television. For some reason my laptop froze, the image on both my computer and TV had white lines across it, and so I turned off my system since it was locked up.

I restarted and began having display problems - first windows were not opening in the desktop area. They would open in the system tray, but were "unreachable" by the mouse. I played with display settings and got the screen to fit...but now seem to have 2 primary problems:

PROBLEM 1:

Whenever I play games, view pictures, or Windows Media Player, I see strange "plaid boxes." However, the desktop is fine and everything else appears to work fine. I contacted NVIDIA and I have installed different driver versions, as well as the OEM (Dell's) driver's - all did not work - I still saw the distorted images when playing games, viewing pictures, and videos.

I have also completed System Restore's to points prior to when I was having the problem - unfortunately that did not work.

Here are screenshots of what I am seeing:

PROBLEM 2:

This problem may stem from the original TV incident. When I click on Displa... Read more

The first set of pictures that you put up look like classics examples of bad video RAM. In a desktop PC I would tell you to swap out the video card with a differnt one to verify that is the issue since in a few cases bad drivers can cause the issue but it's highly unlikely. Professional service by a local non big box computer shop is your best bet at this point.
