Unable to restore, unable to login

Q: Unable to restore, unable to login

This has been quite an odissey so far and I really need help.

I have an ASUS N51Vf on which I just changed a defective hard drive with a new one, same size and specs as the old.

After a clean windows 7 install all was working fine. I created a System Restore Point. No errors reported, restore point created.

I then tried to restore all my data and settings with a back up I had on a external hard drive.
This back up has been made with LaCie Genie Back up Assistant, a program with decent review online.

After having finished to restore the back up, I was asked to restart windows, which I did.

Windows restarted but then it failed to log in giving an error (which appears to be quite common googling it). A window pop up saying
"Interactive logon process initialization has failed. Please consult the
event log for more details."
If you say ok the windows keeps appearing again and again.

There was no way to access windows whatever mode (safe, normal and all the other boot option appearing when pressing f8) I choosed. Startup repair was as well ineffective (since there was no problem in the startup process itself.)

People online reported the only way to fix this was to check the event log files on another computer. So I installed Ubuntu on the unallocated space I left when installing win 7, I copied the logs files, I went through all the errors in the event viewer of another computer, particularly those in application.evtx, I copied safe version of winlogon.exe logonUI.exe and userInit.exe on windows/system32 through Ubuntu but nothing worked. Same error preventing log in.

I then went into the System Restore Point nasty affair. As I previously mentioned, I created this point prior to restore the LaCie backup. The Restore point was there, accessible through the standard recovery options.
What appears is this: standard final window of System Restore

[] Local Disk (C: ) (System) You must enable System Protection on this drive
[] Local Disk (C: ) The drive cannot be found

and I couldn't select any of this drive and proceed.
So I go to the Command Prompt and I realize that windows has been installed on D:, not on C:, which appears to be the system reserved partition with 70Mb free. Something standard when you install win7 apparently. Since my backup was made copying files from C: and I didn't care for the path when restoring my LaCie backup, I thought I messed up things attempting to copy to the wrong drive, even though no error was reported to me.

So I formatted everything, reinstalled windows paying attention not to create other partitions. Clean install, all went through fine. I check on Computer what's the windows unit label, and it is C indeed. I didn't check for the presence of other partitions. I re-restore files from the LaCie Backup. At the end I try to create a new System Restore point, but a weird error tells me that I can't. Already suspicious, I restart, to find myself on the exact same position as before, unable to login, unable to restore (both same as previously described) and, moreover, checking through command prompt, win 7 appears to be in the D: unit again with the C: set up to be the system reserved!!!
I really don't know what to do, I do think this is about "misunderstanding" between the back up restore and windows partitions but I simply don't get it. Hope someone can help.

Preferred Solution: Unable to restore, unable to login

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I ran an Image back up of my C: drive (using Windows 7 & an external usb drive) after getting warning messages that the Hard Disk was failing and to back up the drive.  I got a replacement 500 GB internal drive to restore the Image to and got as far as the Windows Login Screen after the Image Restore was complete and then automatically rebooted.  I typed my password in under my profile BUT, it was not accepted/ recognized... (I can't remember the exact wording) There are 2 profiles that come up, at that point, (just before going into Windows)...Mine, and my g-friends, whom, for whatever reason, WAS able to login to her profile  ...

Can anyone tell me how to bypass or fix this?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

A:Unable to login 2 Windows after backup and Image restore of drive

It's possible that because the hard drive was failing, your profile was corrupted and restoring the image still resulted in a corrupted profile. Try the following.

If you gf's account is admin then log into her account and change/clear the password of your account in "User Accounts" of control panel.

Hello all,

I have been having some issues with my alienware m17x R2 for a long time. Every few months I would have an issue where the computer screen goes black at the login screen (just before) and nothing else would happen. I would be then able to start up my computer in save mode and do a system restore back a few days and it was all good for another few months. (Note: something I have noted is that this seemed battery related because the alienware "head" which is the power button, did not illuminated when I connect it to my AC charger like it usually does whenever I am having this issue).

This time though it was different and I am unable to do system restores to any point in the past. I always get the same error, it says:

"The data is invalid. (0x8007000D)", then I am given the choice to "Run System Restore" or "Close". If I press "Run System Restore" I will get one more error "Catastrophic failure (0x8000FFFF)".

In addition, when I restart my computer, I do not get the black screen anymore, instead I get a flickering image of where the login usually occurs but without the login button. In other words its the red alienware image just flickering and nothing happens (not given any options to login).

I have therefore trying several things to solve either of these 2 problems (either the flickering screen at the login or the error of system restore). Looking through this forum and google I found a bit of hope but... Read more

Anybody, help! Quite desperate as this is affecting my work.

Sometime ago, I installed AGV as there seemed to be lil bugs in my comp that Norton could not get. AGV managed to detect and delete these bugs, but not all problems were solved. Norton's subscription was up and I was still quite peeved about Norton's inability to help...so I uninstalled it. Since then, there were more problems...

1) I'm unable to run help from Start...or msconfig from Start/Run or system restore. The error message is that it can't find the file. Even when I go to explorer to double-click the file directly, it still won't run.

2) I'm unable to open ANY file with MS word or powerpoint. It would say that the file is unavailable. It would also prompt me to replace existing normal.dot file. I'm unable to do the detect and repair, it would say error 1706...I do not have the installation CD with me anymore!

3) I'm unable to run any online virus scan (Trend, Panda...) even after I made changes to the security settings to allow for ActiveX.

4) I'm tried to reinstall Norton, but it can't run. It says 'CFGWIZ.EXE - Unable to locate component. . . . cctrust.dll was not found.'

I do run Spybot, Adaware, AGV, Winaso regularly.

Please help...thanks!

I just recently installed the Windows 8.1 update earlier today. Immediately after the required restart, my computer has not been working properly. As soon as I log on, the desktop flashes back and forth from the desktop picture to the color of the menu background. It flashes back and forth pretty quickly and while this is happeneing I can't perform any functions. When I try clicking on the internet or anything else it is nonresponsive. I tried doing a system restore but after my computer restarted it said the restore was unsuccessful. I tried it again, as well as trying it from a different restore point but neither would work. I then attempted to restart my computer in safe mode but immediately got a pop up saying: "The instruction at 0x35f7649c referenced memory at 0x35f7649c. The memory could not be rewritten. Click OK to terminate the program." After clicking OK, the popup immediately came back and neither clicking OK or pressing the X in the upper right would make it go away and it would just immediatley pop back up and I could not click on anything else while it was up. Also while in safe mode, my desktop shortcuts and desktop picture were again flashing. I'm concerned I have a virus but not exactly sure how I got it or how to fix it. I have Webroot installed and it alerted me to a potential virus a couple days ago but when I tried to fix it, it said something about my product key expiring it and since it wasn't causing my any problems I ignored it. - Did a reset of Windows 10 on a virtual machine
- The default account name is then the first 5 characters of my email account
- I changed that to my real name
- Rebooted
- I was then offered 2 login accounts
- logged in using my real name
- went into account administration (Settings->Accounts-Family & Other users
- under 'Other users' removed 'Guest' (the first 5 characters)
- rebooted

Now, I was still offered two accounts, but my password did not work.
100% sure I was using the correct password and I have tried a dozen times on both accounts.
Windows then suggested to do a 'Recover your windows live account'
(account.live.com/password/reset)

But even with the new password I could not log in...

I was lucky to have a snapshot of an earlier Windows - so I restored the snapshot and Windows is running fine now.

This is a bit of a weird situation.

What if this was on a real machine?
I may need to re-install Windows from scratch. Not so much of a big issue in this case.

However... Windows will surely again offer the 5 character account, 2nd item above.
Q1: Will that then work with the new password? (the new password is combined with my full email address)
Q2: How was I supposed to proceed to avoid this?

Note that:
- on the virtual Windows (VMware) C:\Users\[AccountName] still reads the first 5 characters of my email address (outlook.com)
- on the host-pc C:\Users\[AccountName] is different , being the first 5 characters of hotmail account

Hello everyone, not sure why but I get an error every time I open the System Restore. I rarely have to use a restore point as I regularly maintain my computer and check for viruses and malware, but I would like to have the option just in case. When I open System Properties, and click the System Protection tab, I get this error and am unable to create a Restore Point. Attached is a screenshot and a DxDiag.txt. Any insight to this problem would be helpful, perhaps I have some windows feature disabled that I might need enabled, I am not sure. I recently did a complete reformat of my hard drive and a fresh install of Windows, maybe two months ago, and somewhere along the line I must have removed/disabled something I need for System Restore. Even third party maintenance software is unable to create restore points, such as TuneUp Utilities 2014, AVG Internet Security 2014, and UVK. I'm sure the fix for this is simple, I am just unaware of it. Thanks in advance.

Hi all,
my Latitude E6540 refused to boot this morning and all automatic repair options failed. No sweat I thought and installed a Windows System Image created about a month ago. Now I proceeded to restore the missing data using DBR - I'm doing automatic daily backups - only to find out that this software apparently requires a system backup to work. The problem is that after the last update, DBR refused to accept my Toshiba usb hard drive for system backups, stating that this media device could not be used for system backups - that's why I created a Windows System Image. Nowhere does it state that DBR does not backup data at all if a different software is used for system backups. It seems to me that this is a pretty sh.... piece of software (I bought the premium version). I have learned it the hard way. From now on I will not rely anymore on Dell software for backups. Just thought I'd let everybody know.

Having problems with this particular problem on a work PC. Optima brand PC with our POS software, and video recording software. For the last couple of weeks, the computer will randomly fail to start giving us the error on login that the system cannot log us in to the domain as the username and password is incorrect.

Optima have gone into receivership so there is no point in contacting the company - their only reply is to contact the local repair technician - which is me. But this has got me stuffed as to why it is happening on a continuing basis.

I ran the restore disk through the computer on Friday (again), was unable to re-register the POS software - this is a problem their end as I need to call them to confirm the registration number and the number of POS with our licence.

Turned up to work on Monday morning and found the computer had crashed again - ran restore once again.

Beginning to wonder if it's hardware related to the hard disk drive. Any other ideas or suggestions?

Hi, I'm sorry, but we cannot assist you with work computers for an issue like you posted.

If you have an IT person or Dept. at work, ask them if they've blocked it, if they have, perhaps they will explain why, or help you get logged in. If you try to "fix" things yourselves, you may be violating your company's policies for all we know....

MySpace has seen it's share of hacked ads and things like that, which can result in some security breaches for those working....

Here's an example: Though they are old news...it's relevant:

Im having trouble logging into a Samsung N145 notebook that was given to me. it was supposed to be unused but when i turned the power on it asked me for a username and password. I have tried logging in as "Administrator" with no password. I have also tried booting in safe mode but it just returns me to the log in screen. I have spent hours looking for a solution but the only one i have found is to use the recovery disc that came with it, unfortunately the Samsung doenst have a cd drive.

If anyone can please shed light on the problem i am facing i would be most grateful

A:Unable to login

What usernames do you see at logon screen? You don't know what's on (maybe many viruses), and you dont need all the documents/applications of the previous user. Why not install from scratch? Do you have a COA sticker on notebook with product key?
https://www.google.nl/search?hl=nl&q...MKHW0QWz5YGwAw

Is it win7 home premium of professional or ultimate? See the sticker for that info

When I turned my computer on this morning it started the way it normally starts (going through the windows logo screen then stopping at the "pick your account" screen) but when I click on the account picture to type my password the little waiting circle appear and then nothing happens. It just stays on the "pick your account " screen. I tried picking the other account as well but the same thing happens. I've tried starting it in safe mode, safe mode with networking, and in safe mode with prompts but all those modes load up to the same "pick your account" screen and does nothing if I click on any of the accounts.
Please help.

This is no more than a temporary fix.....................
Restart your computer > Do NOT sign in.
In the sign in screen, bottom right, click the Power icon > one of the options that appears is Restart >
press Shift key and hold > click Restart > click "Restart anyway" if you were asked to confirm the action > wait > click Troubleshoot > click Advanced options > One of the options listed is System Restore > click that .
Now pick a date BEFORE " yesterday " as your restore point.

How can anyone here suggest something new if you have not listed everything that you have tried? Also, the site's rules prohibit helping with cracking or bypassing passwords. You will only get legitimate and Microsoft approved methods here.

Unfortunately, in this case, a reset disc (or USB flash drive) needs to be created while logged into your local account. Should you be able to get back into your Windows user account, here is a link to how to create such a disk.

Exactly what is the problem? Do you enter what you believe is the correct password and you get rejected or don't you even get a chance to choose a user name and enter a password?

Hi guys, I'm facing a strange problem.

Whenever I boot up my laptop, I cannot login to Windows as the keyboard stops functioning. The trackpad goes dead as well. I've also tried to boot up my laptop in safe mode but same thing happens there as well.

I'm sure this is not a hardware issue as keyboard works just fine before the login screen shows up.

Any ideas guys what should I do now?

Laptop is Dell Inspiron 5520.
OS: Win 7 64-bit.

Thanks in advance.

A:unable to login

I am not sure this will work but In the lower left corner of the login screen  is an icon (Ease of Access) Click it and a windows should open. Select Onscreen Keyboard and click apply. The onscreen keyboard should appear. Use that to login to your account. If you have a restore point, do a system restore to a time before the problem happened.

Edit: Sorry, I missed the trackpad non-function at startup. I would follow sflatechguy's good advice on this.

I know this isn't the correct forum to post this, but the MSN support won't let me post, the textarea box is broken.

Anyways, maybe somebody can help here. I'm having an issue with Hotmail and MSN, I'm not able to login. I keep on getting error 80048823. I am forced to reset my password daily, and sometimes MSN Messenger will let me login.

I'm not sure if I am hacked, as if I am I can't find out because it won't let me login. I've changed it to short passwords, long passwords, passwords with unbelievable symbols that would be near impossible to guess. I'm starting to think that it's a MSN issue, not a password issue.

Anyways, I'm getting this on ever computer I try. Is there anything I can do or anybody I can personally contact to see that this gets fixed?

Thanks!

The other day I was trying to make a workgroup so that me and a friend could play LAN games, it ended up not working but thats besides the point. Two days later when I had restarted my computer there was an User account that I did not create so obviously I do not know the password for it.

So this is where the trouble is I had no password setup before hand, and I am not able to login to my computer at all. The administrator account does not work, but I get this error when ever I try to login through the Administrator account and it is something like "The system could not log you on. Make sure your username and domain are correct..." Any advice on what to do? Or how to stop this domain login?

Edit: Running XP home edition.

Something doesn't jive. That error only pops up with Windows XP Pro, when it is joined to a domain. Either way, had you actually read the terms of service, you would know we don't help with password issues.

I'm having a problem setting up a PIN code to logon to Windows 8.1 and would appreciate some help please.

I've linked mine and my partners MS accounts to Windows and as we use password generated passwords consisting of random characters, numbers etc, it would be so much easier to just use a PIN to logon to the computer. However, every time I click the option to 'Add' under PIN in the Sign-in options page of PC Settings, nothing happens. The cursor busy icon flickers but no new menus or options appear and I'm ultimately unable to access the settings.

Could someone suggest a way to overcome this issue please?

I've tried logging off/on, rebooting and restart the credentials manager service but there's no change.

Thanks for any help.

After testing on a virtual machine, I worked out the problem was being caused by changing some settings in Windows 8 Manager 'Security' section. Undoing the changes didn't fix the issue. The only fix was system restore. Unfortunately for me, I had disabled SR on the laptop as I had planned to use Acronis to take weekly backups once I had finished setting everything up. I had to refresh the pc to overcome the issue.

Bit of an inconvenience but it's all resolved now and I'm able to set a pin.

Have also emailed the developer of Windows 8 Manager to request they look into the issue. I took a backup of the HKLM hive before applying any changes on the virtual machine and another backup afterwards and there's a 7MB difference between the two so the program is doing something incredibly screwy with the OS.

Note to self; keep System Restore enabled until I have another backup option running!

I tried what was under the "connect to a secure site" thing in the sticky but its still not working for me.

Before I start the website I'm referring to is huxley.webzen.com , it's a gaming site that you login to and then you click game start then it starts the game up etc. but for one you have to use Internet explorer and it's not letting me login. I type in all of my information correctly and it loads the login .aspx in the address then it just refreshes back to the main site with me not logged in and the "game start" button will not work..I don't have problems with other sites (I usually use firefox though) and I can login fine with other browsers except safari and ares. So far I've tried opera/netscape/flock/winamp/safari/ares/firefox/IE6/IE7 and all but the ones I said login just fine but I cannot use the activex it needs in order to use the game start button.

My account is fine as it works for my friends and I can login to the main webzen.com website but once I click to go to the huxley website it logs me out.

I've updated windows all the way (includes some security updates for IE7 that supposedly fix this error but of course didn't) I've tried a vbscript I found on another tech website that was supposed to fix it but that didn't as well and I have restarted many times/cleared my cookies and temporary files on every browser I used (firefox automatically does it as well as IE7) and I've tried reinstalling the webzen activex thing.

Try booting in safe mode by pressing (tapping)F8 when your system post logo appears. Select Safe Mode if Windows loads fine let us know. Or Lsass.exe could be corrupted or missing if Safe mode gives you no luck.

Recovery Console? Windows xp only uses Recovery Console Windows 7 does not.

Are you running Windows xp or Win7?

After I upgraded to IE11 I'm unable to login to a website entitled Blog Talk Radio. I had no problems before the upgrade and this appears to be the only thing affected. I'm a user of the internet and not computer savvy on the technical side.
I contacted the technical support division of Blog Talk Radio and they informed me that my browser was not compatible and should be using FireFox and the most current version of Adobe Flash Player. When I told them that it worked with IE10 they had no answer why it should have. My Flash Player is up to date so that is not the problem
Is there anyone who can help correcting this problem.

Some of the new security features might be conflicting,
But first confirm if Enhanced protection mode has been activated,
http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/280434-internet-explorer-10-enable-32-bit-64-bit-ie10-windows-7-a.html
Also if you see a Blue circle with a slash through it click it to disable Activate x filtering,

You can also access it by clicking on the Gear symbol on the top right and click on Safety,
See if anything here is checked.

I hope this is the right place to put this anyway here is my problem.

I was given a Dell computer from a business that went out of business. I am currently stuck on the Log on to windows screen. There is a user name of a group to connect to and then a blank password field. States The system could not log you on. Make sure User and Domain are correct. I have tried ctrl+alt+Del twice, tried leaving it blank, tried user Administrator password blank nothing seems to work.On my 1st boot this did not come up. I tried some tips like booting in safe mode and going into the user accounts to change the administrator password. But that is locked out with a administrator password that I do not know. Now I am stuck. I have been digging around for some tips to get around this but have had no luck. If It helps its Windows xp professional, And I did not get any XP disk with it to reformat. Let me know if you have any Ideas.

A:Unable To Login To Windows

Buy an XP/Vista (whichever you prefer) CD or use Linux. It's not like the cost is a "break the bank" item in return for the utility of valid use of the system.

If it's an OEM machine, you have no right to use that version of XP...regardless of the fact that the company no longer exists. If you had a right, you would have obtained the password, since it's related to access/useability.

And...if you have a valid license, you ought to be able to use any MS XP Pro to do the clean install. There are a ton of them out there, it should be simple to borrow one or burn one.

Hi,

about 2 years ago my computer randomly shut down (I think because of a virus), and when I tried starting it back up, it would bootup fine, but I could never get past the XP Pro login screen. The passwords/accounts are fine. I only have one password-protected account, which is mine, and the password is still valid. I also have an additional account for my sister without a password.

Whenever I try to login to either account, it displays the "Loading account settings..." dialogue but doesn't do ANYTHING after that, it never logs in.

I tried booting my computer into safemode, but then it gets to a login screen for Administrator, and apparently there's a password that I guess I set a long time ago, and I have no clue what it is and can't log in. I tried logging in WITHOUT putting an administrator password in since I know you can sometimes do that with XP Home, but I had no luck.

Is there anything I can do to fix this? Is there a way I can log in somehow? Is it a virus?

Also, if I were to somehow get into the computer by setting up an additional XP partition, would I still have access to all of my files? THe reason I ask is because I saved a LOT of IMPORTANT work-related files into the "My Documents" folders for my account...is there a way I can access any of that?

Thanks so much for the help, I'm perplexed here!!

To download HJTsetup.exe from SpyKiller To Download HijackThis go to the following at the File Repository
Click on the button for Download to the right of HijackThis Self Installer:

http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/index.php?action=tpmod;dl=item5

Save the file to your desktop.
Double click on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
By default it will install to C:\Program Files\HijackThis.
Continue to click Next in the setup dialog boxes until you get to the Select Additional Tasks dialog.
Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
At the final dialog box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button. It will scan and then ask you to save the log.
Click Save to save the log file and then the log will open in notepad.
At the top of the Notepad HJT log screen, hit Edit then Select All then click Edit and then click Copy doing that copies the text to the clipboard, you won't see it yet....
Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply. DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Instead of deleting his account, go to the "Settings" panel while signed in using the sign-on he created.  Then using that account,  click on "Accounts" then click "Family and other people "  on the next screen.  Then "Add a family member"  Add a new adult user with your credentials and make sure this new account has admin privileges. Then when the computer is powered up, use your account for your desires and have him use his when he is on.
