Screen not turning back on after closing screen

Q: Screen not turning back on after closing screen

After I close the screen (closing the lid over the keyboard). Instead of going into standby and then turning back on when I open the lid (screen), the screen doesnt come back on and I have to restart the computer. What is going on. P.S. I have XP tablet edition. Thanks

Preferred Solution: Screen not turning back on after closing screen

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Here is the issue, when my computer goes to sleep after it's on for a while when I move the mouse to get the screen back up it shows the backround no icons or anything to click.
Same if I turn it off and turn it back on. I have to turn it off and on many times then go to safe mode and shut down then turn it on again for it to work. Just now I had to turn it on/off 4 times for it to show the icons and task bar. Usually it is left blank with nothing to click having no choice but to turn it off.
Norton says no viruses.
My computer is HP with windows 7. I bought it in 2011.
This problem has been happening for a long time. Please help.

Hello squirrels and welcome to Seven Forums.

I think I'd start out by trying to do a startup repair. It's been suggested that the startup repair be done 3 times (regardless of what the notifications say) and the computer rebooted after each repair.

XP Service Pack 3

Screensaver is enabled and so is 'Display welcome screen when coming back from screensaver'.

This works most of the time, however on a regular basis the screensaver will resume to the following screen and just stay there forever.

The only thing to do is to press the power button, at which point a popup alerts that a user is logged in, do you still want to shut down.

Thanks,

Hi everyone,

From last few weeks I'm having this strange and annoying blank screen of death. I could just see a blank screen (not a blue screen) while either waking up computer from sleep or while trying to turn on the display by moving cursor/typing something(waking up from power saver mode of display, I set display to be of after few minutes of inactivity). So essentially screen becomes total blank. Just once or twice I saw this BSOD "DRIVER POWER STATE FAILURE" but for all other times my screen is just blank. I could see the Hard Disk activity LED on during this blank screen. And almost after all subsequent boots, I could see "Windows has recovered from unexpected shutdown/serious error - Check for solution" message.

System - Windows 7 Pro x64 with all latest recommended and security updates
CPU - i7 2630QM
GPU - nVidia GT525M

First I suspected its because of my nVidia GT525M GPU drivers (I was using official latest drivers 320.49), so I completely uninstalled them with regular uninstall + DriverSweeper 2.1.0 from Guru3D.com. I did not install any nVidia/display drives since then. But just now I got another blank screen after it. Also I started connecting my PC to an old Sony Bravia TV with HDMI cable and that time the automatic installation of drivers failed. That is my second point of possible problem. I've been using CCleaner to clean the unwanted registry entries and revo uninstaller for almost every unin... Read more

Dear all, Happy new year and all

I wonder if you could help...

My husbands laptop this evening will not turn on AT ALL. It was working perfectly well a few days ago:

When the power button is turned on all that happens is the power light turns green. There is no sound coming from the hard drive (the hard drive light doesn't even show). In addition, there doesn't seem to be a fan working. And finally, there is a light strange noise (not a hard drive noise).

I am wondering whether it is a motherboard issue????
Woud creating a recovery bios boot CD help? Would like wipe the hard drive?

The major problem is that the laptop is used for all our business transactions and GASP.... we haven't backed it up, so we could potentially lose very important data
Many thanks and I do hope somebody is out there to help us.

Much geekness

Hello everyone! Iv'e been having an issue that's driving me crazy and i'm hoping someone here can help.

The issue i'm having is when my computer goes into sleep/hibernate mode and i wake it up, the screen appears to have a resolution issue ( picture attached ). I figured this wasn't a big deal so i turned sleep/hibernate mode off and just turn my screen off when not in use. I'm getting the exact issue though! When i turn my screen off and back on, the resolution is messed up.
So now i need help resolving this. If it also fixes it for the sleep/hibernate mode, that would be great but not necessary
The ONLY recent change is I upgraded to an Asus GTX560 Ti DirectCU II Top OC graphics card. I installed the card into my computer and windows automatically downloaded the drivers for it.

Things i've tried:

2) Currently using HDMI, but get the same issue with DVI-D (single) cord
3) Completely reinstalled Windows 10 Pro from scratch
4) Double checked all connections
5) Look through settings on my TV and settings on the graphics card through Nvidia Experience
6) Googled similar issues, but im not finding many that have the SAME issue as me

What is its model name and model number?
What is the exact "service tag" and "express service code" numbers on it?

Is it running Windows 10 Pro 32-bit or 64-bit?
You should download and save the appropriate driver from the NVIDIA site, then select the custom install option, then select the clean install option.

Are you having the same issues when using a standard computer monitor instead of using a HD TV?

Hi,

On pressing power button the screen becomes a bit shiny due to backllight, fan starts and parts seems to be spinning inside but screen remains blank, even dell logo does not appear. I have tried removing battery and pressing power button, also I tried pressing Fn button + Power button but I no luck. I also tried to reach diagnostic screen using F12 during boot but that also did not help. Power Led and Battery Led lights work but harddisk led does not blink.
Also I noticed that after pressing power button when I LONG PRESS any button of the keyboard, is sounds a continuous ticking sound like kirrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

Hi,
I have a Dell 1750 Inspiron laptop that I use "as a desktop" as every piece of hardware is connected to it.
It runs with Windows 7 Home Edition. It has a 4gb memory and a 450gb hard drive which is less than half used.

I have the screen saver set to Photos and usually have a cut-in time of 1 hour idle.

The screen saver cuts in exactly when it should and scrolls through my photos for as long as the laptop is left idle.

However, as soon as I touch the mouse/keyboard, instead of reverting to the "normal" screen the photos disappear, the blank screen fades for a few seconds and then a message appears in a box, saying that the Photos Screen Saver is not responding, and gives the options of either close the program or wait for the programme to respond. Waiting doesn't seem to work so I have to click on close the programme and then cancel the statement that Windows will try to find a solution, because it doesn't!

I have tried to vary the time before the screen saver kicks in, anything from 1 minute to several hours but it doesn't seem to make any difference.

Can anyone help please?

A:Photo Screen Saver wont revert back to live screen

Have you checked the timing for when the HDD turns off or Sleep or Hibernation kicks in [I disable both of those and lengthen the time on the HDD to several hours], Control Panel, Power Options?

The reason I mentioned the HDD is the symptoms you mentioned seem to apply. The screen saver could be in memory and not affected by the HDD until it's asked for something.

A:Solved: Screen is black after system restore and update. Set back one day, screen is

Usually, system restore is used to resolve problems like this. You might want to consider doing a clean install and see if that has any affect. Hopefully your data is saved on an external or flash drive. Hi people, i've just registered to this forum to ask you about this, Since i've made a registry defrag with TuneUp Utilities (which probably has gone wrong), when i reset the computer, and I logon to my user, it shows a black screen, then back at the logon screen. If I do it again, the user doesn't show up anymore!
It happened three times already, i had to make new users, and i'm sick of it. Any ideas of what could it be?

A:Black screen after login for some seconds, then back at logon screen!

Welcome!

Yet another case of registry defraggers causing harm. In the future, you know now to stay far away from them.

I suggest a system restore to get to a point before TuneUp utilities. If that doesn't work, it will be time for a repair install.

Good luck!

I upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 8 Pro. Everytime or almost everytime I click on an app or go to the desktop and try to get on IE 10 (desktop version), my screen flashes and goes black for a few seconds then returns me to the screen with the space needle, then I click on it and it signs me back in. When I try to use Google Chrome, the websites freeze up on me. I don't want to have to reinstall/reformat as I paid $40 for this for one, and secondly, I don't want to have to repurchase Office 2010 as my licenses ran out. Please help. I ran every update that comes up and restart, but this doesn't change this issue. I'm hoping there will be a patch or service pack or some update that will fix this. Any ideas why it does this and any way to fix it without reformatting?

I had the same problem at first. Then one day the listing of all my apps disappeared. I did a refresh and lost a lot of programs but the files were still there. Then I noticed that the problem with the apps had fixed itself and they worked. My feeling is that the initial install wasn't complete and the refresh completed the install. Recently, after loading my Epson printer's CD, the apps once again disappeared. Had to do a system restore. Now I am having trouble with my screen just being black and not coming on at all...even after a reboot. Win8 has a lot of problems.

Hi all,

I have Win7 Ultimate x64 installed on an brand new HP Pavilion s5-1205z Slimline desktop.

When I am reading an email or document the screen will just suddenly flash to a black screen for a second. Sometimes it does this several times in a row, and other times just once or twice. It is random and does not matter what program I am in, if I am browsing, playing a video on-line, or typing. I have installed Java and done as much troubleshooting as I can and can't find anything that relates to that kind of behavior at all in the Help Files or FAQ's.

Any suggestions of where I might look to see if I need to check or uncheck something, and what, would be very much appreciated.

Combining the info that you posted here with the info in this thread - I gotta wonder if someone is able to remote into your computer. If you are not too far along in setting up your computer, you might want to consider a clean install without all of the bloatware.

Unless you have a specific need for Java - uninstall it. If you need it, then it might be worth the security risk of having it installed. If you don't need it - then why risk having it installed?

Hi, as you quite reasonably expect, shouldn't normally happen. That does happen e.g. after changing language, and for rather longer, but only the once, but I can't imagine that's relevant here.

Does it happen in safe mode?
If not, try a clean boot, and if that's ok, process of elimination.

Were any of your install attempts a clean install rather than an upgrade? If so and it still happens then you could try the version of your graphics driver used in Win 8 (but note Win 10/MS will quickly replace it unless you take precautions- see Tutorials)

Hi Folks,

First time noob here, thanks in advance for your patience and expertise. It's been awhile, so if you need additional information, I'll be more than happy to get it for you in a timely manner. Again, thanks.

OMG! Some really peculiar things have been happening, in addition to your average no-boot situation. Here's the story:

Came with XP, upgraded to Win 7 (64 bit, I think?)
nVidia graphic card
Ram, I believe is 4 GB (I upgraded)
Processor: Athlon 64 (V) 3800+ 2.4 GHz
HD: 200 GB, I have an old one slaved in, and I have an external drive as well

A couple weeks ago (got discouraged and busy at the same time, so this is my first real attempt at fixing it), I was doing some things on the computer with my mom, when I unplugged the wireless keyboard from the USB. Big mistake, because I actually have done that before, and had to reboot, and baby it in order to get squared away and back to original running condition.

Anyway, as soon as I pulled that USB, the screen froze. Usually I just reboot, but this time, it didn't happen. So, I tried unplugging everything and doing the whole reboot thing, to no avail.

Today, I spoke with a friend, who suggested I do a disk boot. I had the disk and tried it.

The weirdest thing happened - first, the computer wouldn't recognize the keyboard (wired by now), and I unplugged, restarted, plugged in, restarted, etc. I was finally able to get to the "Boot from cd/dvd?" an... Read more

I am working on a Toshiba Laptop and currently there is only one log on screen. On a normal mode when I log on, the windows gives me a message logging off, shutting down, but actually it is not shutting down but only logging off again, then it goes back to the prompt screen to enter my password again. Another issue is when I log on under Safe Mode, I could go all the way to the desktop, but then when I review all the Folders content, such as music files, documents, pictures, there is nothing in the folder, there is no content. The folders are there with the title but it is empty. It's like the files are hidden, but they're not because I unhide the files and folders and did not see anything. I created a new profile and brought over the folders there and even copied the files on the thumb drive and opened it in another computer, but there's no files, the only visible file is just one which is desktop.ini. Please advise as to why the user profile logs off after entering the password and then goes back to the log on screen and also why all this user's files are gone. Thanks for the help.

I have no idea what happened to my Window 8 Lenovo Laptop p500 touch . I'm assuming the inverter is loose or something? every time I shut my laptop, or i bump into it, it goes dim.

I can still see it, but I need light to do so. the only way I can fix it is when I tap the back of the Display where the inverter is.

I also found out that when I carefully move the display, making sure it doesn't go dim again. sometimes, the display has like a green, red, pixals.

I look up a diagnostic where if you slightly flex the side of the display to see if anything happens. When I did this, the some part of the screen goes green, red, then goes completely white.

After I let the side of the display go, it goes back to being dim where, Again, I can tap the the display where the inverter is to fix it.

Could anyone tell what's happening to my laptop, and how much it would be to fix it.
Thank you.

Hello,I'm not sure if this is the right place to post but hopefully I can get some help or be forwarded to a place a I can.So a few years ago my parents purchased a C40-05 all-in-one desktop. From the start there were problems. It would hang at the Lenovo screen, continuously have to enter Windows Repair and would not shut down correctly. After updating via the latest updates from both Windows and Lenovo, the desktop's display seems to be not working. When I power on the screen just stays blank as if no power is going to it. However, if I put in a CD i can hear it spin and also I can see the power buttons on both the mouse and keyboard light up. I can't even access the bios as there is no display what so ever.  Any of you experienced this or know how I can fix it? At this point it's not really worth taking to a shop but if I could access the bios at least that would be a start. ThanksChris

Hi guys!I have a Toshiba Encore tablet with windows 8.1 on it. After an update yesterday, the screen doesn't turn off when it gets in sleep mode.It turn black, but it still has the background light on.The same update messed up the screen luminosity. It is set to maximum by default, and no matter how much I change it, nothing happens. The battery drains very fast with the screen on this way and I really don't know how to solve it.I tried system restore, but it didn't have any images saved, so I need a solution apart from that. Many thanks!

You could try rolling back the updates until you uninstall the "bad" one. Process of elimination is all I know if you cannot restore point your way out or apply a backup image.

My monitor turns off every now and again, I've changed the monitor to test if it was that which was causing the problem but it still happens. I've also changed the wire, checked the power supply (seems fine from what I can tell) and replaced the hard drive. I could be playing a game or doing nothing on it at all and it would happen.

Don't think it's the graphics card as when it does work the images are fine.

One thing I noticed when it does turn off is that my external hard drive turns off too but the computer remains on,also once when I was playing music when the screen went off the music stopped too. Makes me think its a hardware problem but not sure which.

I had to do a clean wipe on a virus/malware infected HP All In One Touchsmart 310-1000z (2010 model). I have turned off hibernate, sleep, hybrid sleep, and hard drive sleep. Screen is set to dim at 3 minutes and screen saver at 10 minutes. But for some reason, the screen will just go blank randomly, it seems like maybe 45-60 minutes after being turned on.

Clicking the mouse does not bring the screen back, nor typing on keyboard, nor touching the screen. Have to press the power button and shut it off that way. The hard drive light does not flicker, leading me to believe it may still be going into a sleep mode I can't find?

Yesterday I was in a hurry and it was taking a long time to shut the laptop down. So I went for a force shut down. But now when I am turning on the laptop, nothing is happening. The screen is black, nothing is coming up. I thought it's a screen problem, but the buttons are also not working. I tried the Caps lock button, Mute button, Airplane mode button, but nothing is happening. The screen is black. And nothing is coming. I waited for 10-15 mins but nothing is happening. Restarted the device quite a number of times, removed the battery and then tried to turn it on. But at the end, the problem is still there. I need it today at 3 in the afternoon. If someone can help, it will be very kind.

I have no idea what I did wrong.

Took apart my laptop (see signature/system specs) to get the part number off the fan and put the computer back together as normal. Turned it on and voila, no display. Don't know why. Rechecked the connection of the display cable a few times, and still no display. I'm wondering if maybe I damaged the cable or the system board. The computer turns on though, just no display!
Took apart the lid to check the screen. Firstly, HP's construction continues to amaze me. These things are built like tanks for sure! Secondly, there's no visible damage to the screen or any components inside of the lid. Going to put it back together and test the screen one more time, and if that doesn't work, I'll test with an external monitor to see how things work out...

I know, vague, but I'm kinda stuck/lost here.
Help?

Hello kbronski,

Keep in mind that all the LCD wire connectors are extremely fragile. Do not apply too much force while reconnecting the cables. Secure the connector with the clear tape.

If the external monitor doesn't work, try power cycling:

shut down
unplug battery and charger
hold power button for 5 to 10 seconds to drain all residual power
plug battery and charger back in
done....

If the external monitor does work, hold down the FN key while you tap the F-key with a picture of a monitor. Perhaps, it got turned off.

For whatever reason, I keep getting the BSoD if I put my laptop to sleep by closing the screen. Clicking the Sleep button on the menu works fine, but closing the screen messes everything up. I've had this happen multiple times now and I don't understand the problem. I'm not really knowledgeable enough to know what these minidump files or whatever are and I can't do anything. Safe mode doesn't work, rebooting doesn't work, nothing. I can put in a disc, but I can't access it since I can't boot the computer. It just says "Error 8888883333333 Contact Vendor." I have no idea what that means, but I need this thing to work. I have a presentation on Tuesday and if this happens I'm screwed (I have my work backed up but the people at my job are total dicks and say it has to be on my machine or it counts as being unprepared. How does closing the screen cause the system to crash like this?

Hello, for the past few weeks my computer has been shutting down to a black screen randomly, but it seems to mostly occur after I close a game (such as Overwatch) that has been open for more than an hour. During a crash, I can still hear audio being played through my headphones and my computer's fans will spin at maximum speed until I shutdown the computer manually. Crashes will not occur if the computer is left idle for days at a time. I suspect the first shutdown was due to an overheat and that may have left heat damage but I am unsure. The computer is a custom build, and I already have eliminated power supply, temperature, and drivers as likely issues but I can provide more information if needed.
Thank you

My daughter has a new Inspiron 15 7000 Gaming laptop.
If it goes to sleep or she closes the lid the screen remains blank.
The laptop requires a restart.
She is away at school so I will need to advise her from home.
Any ideas?
Driver upgrade? hardware problem?

Thanks.

A:Screen blank after sleep or closing lid.

I have the same model and I just started getting this exact same issue the other day. While I was working, the screen flickered, went out, then came back after a few seconds, but since then, waking from sleep produces a black screen, with the keyboard still lit and functional.
Despite the black screen, I can still log in and play videos and music if I press the right buttons on my keyboard, so that at least is fine. I have to shut down (via holding down the power button) and restart just to get the screen back on, though restarting this way produces a blue screen (not of death) that says that Windows hasn't started properly.
Does your laptop have the same symptoms? This could be a more widespread issue with a recent update or something.

At the beginning I have to write, that it is NOT a problem with going into hibernation after closing the lid. This function is set off. The problem is that if I work with expanded desktop (I don't know the exact name of that feature in english, I just have connected external monitor, which shows me other part of my desktop than on laptop screen) and close the lid, nothing changes in display settings. I mean, when I close lid, notebook should know, that the lid is closed, and change the display setting into only one, external monitor (I have that in my previous notebook). My goal is to set the lid, that if I close it, it switch from expanded desktop into my external monitor only and turn off the laptop screen. How can I do it? My laptop is Lenovo Y50-70 with GTX 960M.

Hey Users,

I've been seeing a strange screen that appears during shutdown. It's not there at every shutdown, and it's only on screen for a few milliseconds, so it's real hard to read.

It appears just after the blue shutdown screen.

This has been bugging me for close to a month or more. Today, I made concerted effort to see if I could read what it said by changing the background screen color. The background color had nothing to do with it, but it did help me to regulate my eyes so I could read parts of what was on the screen.

The Screen says "Waiting for background program to close" and there are two rectangular buttons and the left one may say Force Close but I'm not sure, the right on is Cancel. There is more writing there but I'm sure this is enough to get some help on.

My system is only a few months old and I've had to re-image it 3 times. I've only been using Windows 7 for the same length of time, and I was on the verge of trashing it. I haven't had any problems with my XP Pro system crashing for close to 10 years

Please Help and Thanks

You could try doing a System Restore. Going back to the time just before the issue started.

System Restore

If this doesn't fix. Let us know and we will suggest other options.
