Ideapad Z710 thermal throttling

Q: Ideapad Z710 thermal throttling

I purchased my Z710 Laptop 2-3 years ago. Currently I seem to suffer from thermal throttling on both the CPU(i7-4700mq)(85C) and GPU(gt-745m)(75C). I tried cleaning dust from the fan and heatsink but that did not seem to solve the issue. I tried to underclock CPU down to 2.4GHz but still reaches 85C and GPU still throttles as well. So I am thinking of two options:1) Buy a laptop cooling pad and put it under the exposed underside of the laptop and hope that it can cool it down.2)Replace the thermal paste of the CPU and GPU (boy oh boy how sketchy this one is, but exciting at the same time!) and hope for the best? I am looking for your advice on which of these I should choose or if there is anything I am missing? Thank you in advance!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi, I have a y50 with an Intel i7-4710HQ and a GTX 860M.The biggest Problem I have is that after a short while it automatically throttles the CPU down to 800Mhz and while I do understand the need to limit CPU-Speeds at high temps, all cores are running at about 50 degrees Celsius. While I do understand that conservative Threshholds are probably in the companies best interest, overdoing it and in consequence making the Notebook almost unusable probably isn't.I was wondering if there is any way to loosen the Threshholds or maybe doesn't let it throttle down quite as much so i can actually have a reliable Notebook again.

Hi all,I recently purchased a P51 laptop with a I7-7820HQ CPU and Nvidia M2200 GPU.What I noticed, almost immediately, is that the CPU fans frequently reach high RPMs (~4500) even when loaded only for a few seconds during application launch.Testing with Intel Extreme Tuning Utility uncovered almost immediate thermal throttling, only a few seconds after a CPU stress test is launched. Expected core frequency of 3.5 GHz is reached only briefly and after this it is throttled to 2.7-3.0 GHz within 5 minutes of the test.Since the system board was replaced recently, I guess there is a possibility of improperly installed cooling system, however, what causes additional concerns is a big temperature difference between the cores which is more than 20 degrees Celsius under 100 % load.Except this, it seems that the air coming out of the laptop during the stress test is only slightly warm and significantly cooler than what I am used to on other laptops. On the other side, Nvidia GPU seems to behave quite well under stress test (Furmark).Except this, I also tried to run Intel Processor Diagnostic Tool but the test failed before reaching GPU stress test because of too high temperature with the following result:Current Junction Temperature is 99CCurrent Degrees Below Max 1CMaximum Junction Temp Allowed 100CTest Result - FAILPlease check your Processor Thermal SolutionTemperature Monitor Stopped by User Can you please advise how to solve this issue and share your results with similar lapto... Do I need 1mm or 2mm thermal pads? Is Collaboratory Liquid metal pase worth a try? and how about it agresive chemical reaction to aluminium? Is there any Al in y510p thermal system? What can you recommend to me? And last question, how does thermal pads look like inside my y510p? Just don't want to purhase anything that will not fits my laptop.Cheers

So I built my PC just over a year ago and have had absolutely no issues with it, until about a week ago. I noticed that my PC was running slower than usual, I was getting FPS loss while gaming, and everything else lagged too - opening/closing programs, switching tabs, etc. After downloading a few things to check what was going on, it appears that my CPU is thermal throttling. This is strange, as my PC states that the temperature is sitting at about 27-30 degrees Celsius. As soon as it throttles, the multiplier drops to 8x, causing my core speed to get stuck at 0.80GB, which is why it starts to lag (rather than 36X multiplier at 3.6GB speed). Sometimes my CPU throttles the entire time, from the moment I turn it on. Other times, I can see it fluctuating between 8x and 36x every few minutes. When I run a CPU stress test, I noticed that the temperature doesn't change (stays at 27), which is making me think maybe the heat senses aren't working properly. If the CPU is actually very hot, I don't understand why it's hot now when this was never an issue.
The CPU fan is still working. I've dusted out my entire PC. Yes, all power settings are on high performance. The slow-mode switch on my motherboard is turned off. I've reset the BIOS. I've turned off EIST (Enhanced Intel SpeedStep Technology). I haven't made any changes to my PC for this to be happening. What could be the problem?

Hello all I've just got myself a M93p tiny desktop and it's a great machine apart from one problem... In gaming (light gaming, OpenGL DOOM 2 and Unreal Tournament at 1080p) the machine is suffering from thermal throttling. I've applied Thermal Grizzly thermal paste (said to be the best thermal paste you can buy) to the CPU but still it throttles itself causing a massive drop in frame rates. I also notice it drops performance a lot in Handbrake video encoding where the encode rate goes from 60fps to around 27fps. My CPU is the quad core i5 I5-4570T. I know this machine has a pretty small cooler but even with the best thermal performance setting selected in the BIOS it still does it and the fan doesn't seem to speed up to help the thermals. It just stays quiet which is great but I expected it to speed up under load and cool the machine instead of thermal throttling first. I've also tried to disable the ICE thermal alert setting in the BIOS. Do any of the newer BIOS releases address this issue or help in anyway as I'm 99% sure I'm using an old BIOS revision. Are there any solutions to this issue as it makes the quad core CPU rather pointless as it just throttles itself and performs half as well as it should whenever you do something taxing.  Any advice or help greatly appreciated.

So I finally received my heavily delayed P71 and so far I'm pretty happy with it save an issue with CPU throttling.  I noticed when doing extremely CPU heavy SQL or GIS analytic workloads that the frequency was constantly dropping from 3.9Ghz (4 core turbo) down as low as 2.4Ghz.  I downloaded Intel XTU and pretty quickly found the problem...it's running into BOTH current and thermal throttling!   In the graph below the yellow and red spikes are thermal and current limit throttling, respectively. I can reproduce this with either real world workloads in SQL or various GIS applications and using synthetic benchmarks as well (XTU, AIDA64). I might expect this from a gaming PC but certainly not from a mobile workstation costing almost $5,000. Specs:Xeon 1535m v6Nvidia P400032GB DDR42 x 512GB NVME RAID 02 x 1TB SATA software RAID 0 All of these tests were done on a raised, vented monitor stand for the best airflow. I'm sure an undervolt and repaste would take care of the majority of the problems, but I simply refuse to have to go that route on a PC in this class. Thoughts?

Hi all, First of all, I love my T470! It is by far the best laptop in this form factor on market. To be brief, I used HWiNFO 5.52 today just wondering what info can I get from many sensors. However immediately when I open the sensor status window, I see it used red font to shout out that my CPU core #0 is thermal throttling. I get interested and kept watching on, and I find that ever a few moments (probably a few tens of seconds to no more than 2 minutes) there will be a short moment that either core #0 or #1 is thermal throttled, or some times both. So I tried to look a bit into the issue. I searched Internet, but could not find a explanation yet. I tried to restart and immediately after boot it is doing this. I left it unwatched for a while, then it is still doing this. I restored OS, removed all attached devices, and load defaults in BIOS, it is still doing this.  My question is, should I be worried? During the whole time I am very sure there's not a hot spot on surface of the laptop. And HWiNFO reported CPU temp range never exceeds 72 degrees Celsius on either core, with a average around 50. Although I would think the temp is not low, but I really don't think it qualifies for throttling all the time. Is this normal for new generation i7? Or is there something wrong with heat sink in my laptop? I attached a screen shot of HWiNFO just in case. Thank you all for reading!

Hi everyone, I am new ownere of P71  E3-1535M   CPU and NVIDIA Quadro P5000  GPU.I am not too familiar with thermal and current level throttling but I am experiencing both on my 2 days old mashine.  Would someone give me quick explanation of what is normal and what will eventually harm the hardware over time? I bought this laptop to keep up with some more intensive tasks that come with interior designs and 3D rendering that comes with it.  When I start rendering I see Thermal Throttling nonstop and current limit throttling on and off eery other second. CPU temperatures running between 90-94C  with Core frequency around 3.57 GHz.  Greaphics temperatue around 70C. See attached screenshot from Intel XTU.   Is this normal or do I need to call Lenovo to get it corrected?  If there would be no Thermal throttling and Current limit Throttling would I see faster core frequency?  Sorry if these questions have ovious answers.. It's a lot of money for me and I want to make sure  I am getting best use of it now and in the future.        Thank you for your input.   Charles

Hello everyone, I have a lenovo z51-70 with i5-5200U and 4gb r9 m375. It has been performing excellently for the past 1.5 years or so, but suddenly one issue came up with gaming. When i game, its fine for around a minute and then the game starts stuttering, checked the cpu speed and found it to be 0.48Ghz, which dropped from near 2.6Ghz. Checked out the intel extreme tuning utility when this happens and found that it was THERMAL THROTTLING by the CPU, this doesn't happen even when benchamrking. So, I want to know why this thing has suddenly started out in my laptop and is there any way to cure it. Other info: Haven't changed anything with that tuning utility, drivers and all are updated, still in warranty, adapter connected to the socket, gaming in high performance, cooling policy set to active, max cpu usage set to 100%, virtualisation enabled(default) The picture: Started the Witcher 3 to show the throttling, the peaks are when the game was running and then suddenly after 30s, poof to 0.48Ghz. Memory consumption is normal, it will reduce after i have shut down the game.

Until recently the laptop worked fine, but now it experiences something that resembles thermal throttling.
Initially, everything is OK, but after 10-15 min of heavy use (and by heavy use I mean a 1080p youtube video), it starts to really chunk the responses. You would think is because is overheating, but the temps never gets really high.

[check attachment for higher resolution]
As you can see, the highest temp was presumably 77C, and the current one is 50C, while the On-Demand Clock Modulation is 50%, but it feels way worse. Once the ODCM kicks in it's very slow.
I'll give it a good clean inside and a new thermal compound this weekend, but I doubt that's the issue, it looks clean already.
Any thoughts on why is ODCM kicking in ?

Just got my P53 (i9 9880H, RTX 4000, 32GB Ram)  and set it to high performance when plugged in. (Also, I'm using the thunderbot 3 workstation dock with a wide 3840x1600 resolution monitor if that matters). It mostly working great; primary use is AutoCAD/SketchUp/etc, but I also do a bit of gaming on the side. With World of Warcraft, it runs fine for an undetermined amount of time (perhaps an hour), then the framrate drops from 70-80's to like 10 and becomes very jerky. Restarting the program doesn't help; only way to "fix" it is a full restart of the system. Watching task manager, neither CPU or GPU are being heavily used (maybe 15-20% cpu, spikes of maybe 50% on GPU, but mostly lower than that), but the fans are generally on full when the game is active. I installed Intel Extreme Tuning Utility to monitor what's going on, and there is pretty constant power limit throttling going on even when the temps are around 50-60deg C. I've also seen a decent bit of thermal throttling. I'm fully updated in windows updates and Lenovo Vantage; I also tried updating my graphics driver directly from NVIDIA but there was no change.  What little time I've spent in CAD has been fine so far, so I'm not sure if this is normal behavior, but I'm a little surprised to see this much throttling when the CPU/GPU isn't anywhere near being stressed. So two questions: 1) Any idea what could be causing the drops in the game? 2) Is the throttling at relatively low computational... A:Pavilion dv6 overheating (7690m XT thermal throttling)

Hey guys.. So after finding out that some people on this forum are rude, and tell you to download drivers that were released in 2011, I decided that I would experiment a bit. Updating my drivers did indeed do the trick (GPU temperatures dropped from 103 degrees to 87 degrees in the same game after the same period of time) I did not use HP's official drivers because I already had their latest version, and it made my GPU thermal throttle like mad. PS: If you have the 7690m xt GPU, it is indeed the 6770m just with 2GB memory instead of 1GB BEFORE DOING ANY OF THE STEPS BELOW, I WOULD RECOMMEND MAKING A SYSTEM RESTORE POINT  I downloaded the drivers that are found on AMD's official website ( http://support.amd.com/en-us/download )Because I have 7690m xt (AKA: 6770m), I downloaded the drivers under following heading: AMD Radeon? HD 6000M and HD 5000M? SeriesOnce the driver download is complete, go into device manager and open the "Display Adapters" drop-down menu. Then delete the AMD GPU's drivers. Don't worry if your resolution looks a bit weird now. Then download Driver Fusion ( https://treexy.com/products/driver-fusion ) and delete the remains of the AMD drivers.Restart your notebook.Switch of Wi-Fi or any other mechanism of connecting to the internet.Install the AMD drivers downloaded earlier.Once installation is complete, restart your notebook.Everything should be good now. You can also switch Wi-Fi back on if needed

Is it normal that when both cpu and discrete gpu of this laptop are 100% used (not benchmarking, just normal usage of software that needs to) there is some kind of POWER throttling on the cpu?

Power Limit 1 goes from 45w to 20w then back to 45 for about 10 minutes, then goes down to 15w and stays there for an undefined amount of time (even if temps are low at about 75 degrees)

Hi everyone, I just got a Thinkpad x270 and I'm having an issue where the processor gets throttled to 60c / 2GHz when the lid is closed on battery power.  I posted about it in detail on the Linux Mint forums here.  I originally thought this was a Linux kernel / driver issue, but it turns out this happens on Windows too, no matter whether I set every setting in the BIOS and OS power management to max performance, power save, balanced, etc.  I can get around this by closing the lid on A/C power and then unplugging, or just running the  laptop on A/C while the lid is closed.  If there is some kind of inherent danger in running the processor over 60c with the lid closed, I would expect it to thermal throttle at that temperature regardless of whether or not it was plugged in when the lid was closed.  I can also boot up the laptop with the lid closed and bypass the throttling limitation. It seems like either:- the temperature should always be throttled to 60c when the lid is closed for some reason, and it's not being enforced in all scenarios even though it should be, or...- it's a bug and the CPU shouldn't be throttled at such a low temperature at all. Either way, it seems like there is a firmware issue that needs to be fixed.  Can anyone from Lenovo shed some light on this issue?  Is it by accident or by design?

Hi,
I got a new Aurora R7 yesterday, with Intel core i7-8700 CPU. Right off the bat, when I was installing browser, and doing other small stuff, I could see that the fans would spin at high RPM and create a lot of noise.
I opened Command center and saw that at small loads 15-25% of CPU, the package temperature was high, from 68C going to 84C and fans would spin high and it would again come down to 60s.
I decided to do stress test using Dell Support assist and temperatures reached 98-99C within 3 minutes and fans were blowing so hard it felt like an airplane was about to takeoff.
I decided to dig further and downloaded Intel Extreme Tuning utility. When I run stress test, I can see that MAX Core Frequency drops to 4.28 GHZ and temperatures rise to more than 90C. It does not reach the processor max speed of 4.60 GHZ at all during stress test.
I feel there is an issue in how the CPU and Heat sink are connected and something is wrong.
What do you guys think?

I have a T470 with a I5-7200u and the cooling is not performing optimally. When I first got the laptop I could run it under full load for hours and the cpu temp wouldn't even budge from 50 degrees Celsius. When idling the fan would almost always be off. Recently however things have gone not so optimal. The fan usually runs at high speeds when the computer is idling. The cpu temperatures sometimes get all the way up to 60 degrees celcius. Once it got up to 70. When I run some heavy work like 3D rendering I can't even get to 3 GHz on turbo boost. Then sometimes it runs cool while idling. Any ideas to the cause? Thanks

After i completely dignosed the issue it seems to me that there are problems in BIOS, Drivers and thermal management as when I start playing a game (GTA 5, Battlefiels 1) i runs smooth for 5 minutes but after that i starts lagging and freezing. I have also run some benchmarks but results are similarly as there is the issue of cpu thermal throttling. And audio distortion is due to unstable and poor compatibility drives. In dell forms i read people saying that all this is caused due power management issues which i have also noticed as when CPU is idle is consumes around 20 watt at 50°C but when put under load it once reaches 50 watt of peak usage at 100°C but with in few seconds it thermal throttles and used only 15 watt at 80°C which is even less than idle speed which causes many problems and freezing also all with in few minutes of gaming or proper use. Many uses are facing same problems as i have read on reddit and dell community form but not all the systems are affected as the review units that some YouTube channels and Websites like Laptop Mag reviewed did not exibit such problems or otherwise the reviews are fake. I don't know why dell is not solving the issues and sending me the same problematic Laptop again for the third time.!!

Hi, I just got a new Thinkpad X1 Yoga and I would be happy so far, if it was not for the severe thermal throttling. I checked with throttlestop and the PROCHOT (so the temperature at which the CPU thermal throttles) is set to 85C. This is far too low and should rather be 95C or 100C. Is this normal for this machine? I updated BIOS to the latest one (1.27) - no change.

Laptop seemed very warm when putting it into my bag tonight (shutdown). Later, I ran the Intel Extreme Tuning utility 5 min CPU only stress test and this is what happened. Max core freq: 2.04GHzMax temp: 97cExcessive thermal throttling the entire time (see the yellow line with plateaus up top).  It's late in the day right now, but I have created a service request and will call to follow up in the morning.

Dear all, I have Ideapad Z710 with a specifical problems. When I turn on laptop my cooler goes frantic 139 % rpm. After trying installing different OS (Windows 7, 8.1, 10) Fans never shuts down nor I can make him slowdown with some softwares, tried (notebook fan control, speedfan). I cannot see fan options except fan speed in any of those programs. Also I cannot install drivers for my second graphic card 740m as it states that graphic card isnt available at all. And yet I see it on board and it worked until these problems with fan came up. I have been looking for the solution all through the internet and forums tried many of the solutions but nothing worked for me. Can anyone help ?

I have an Ideapad Z710 running under Windows 8.1.A few days ago the Laptop suddenly did not come up properly from sleeping mode. In the mean time I found out that I can get it started if I remove both the Li-ion battery and the coin cell battery (CR-2032) and install them again. But then if I switch the computer off (or put it in sleeping mode) it does not come up again.  And I have to apply the a. m. procedure again. Any idea what the root cause could be  ?

My Z710 retuns the phrase "Please insert a disk into Drive D" when I insert a disk (full or unformatted). I have tried uninstalling/installing the drive to no effect. Is there a diagnostic procedure or software I can try before I go on the drive replacement route please?

Hi to evreyone! So recently I bought a brand new Lenovo Z710 (i7-4700mq, intel hd 4600 and nvidia gt745m). I then installed windows 8.1 (genuine) and all the drivers on the cd that came with the machine. But it seems there is a big problem with the graphics card. Nvidia gt745 seems like its not there. The Geforce Experience and nvidia control panel fail to recognize it, although it's there on Windows Driver Manager. When I try to load a game (WOW) it crashes on the loading screen. "Display driver has stopped responding..." bubble appears and a minute or so afterwards, there is a bsod. The game works on the integrated card (intel hd 4600) when nvidia is disabled or its driver is uninstalled.I tried reinstalling the drivers, downloading and installing the recent ones, removing all graphic drivers and reintalling them in different order, tried safe mode, changed some bios settings, but still nothing happened.Could this be any kind of driver compatibility issue or simply a windows thing, or is it a hardware problem? Could the nvidia be faulty or the laptop itself? I want to try anything before turning it back to where I bought it for a look... So your ideas will be vastly appreciated. Thanks!

My Lenovo ideapad Z710, after a year of use started telling me the battery was not the correct battery.  I thought the battery might have died.  I eventually bought a replacement battery.  The new battery gets the same message.  My wife has a different model but uses the same battery.  My OEM battery does not function in her machine but the new one does.  So it appears that my machine has a problem recognizing the proper battery.  Once I accept the message, the machine boots and runs fine plugged in.  The battery does not charge so I assume the machine is protecting itself from improper battery.  The new battery is a DR.BATTERY Notebook battery with a two year warranty.  When I was shopping for the battery, there were numerous suppliers and of course they all claimed to have only the highest quality that meets or exceeds the original battery specs. Does anyone know a solution?  Could it be a software problem?  I had assumed it was a hardware problem.  The computer works fine as desktop machine, but with no battery it is pretty worthless as a portable.

I'm trying to Install Debian GNU/Linux on my Windows 8 Ideapad Z710, and I can't even get my laptop to boot from external media. From the InsydeH20 Setup Utility, I've so far disabled Secure Boot, set Boot Mode to UEFI, enabled USB Boot, enabled PXE Boot to LAN, and set my EFI boot order to 1) EFI Network 0 for IPv4, 2) EFI Network 0 for IPv6, then 3) Windows Boot Manager (no other options). I'm not actually trying to boot from a network, I just want to boot from the onboard DVD drive or my USB DVD drive. When I boot with these settings, I get the error: EFI Network 0 for IPv4 (...) boot failed, then a similar one for IPv6, then it boots to Windows. Why can't I boot from DVD or USB? Another thing I've tried is setting Boot Mode to Legacy Support and Boot Priority to Legacy First (with Secure Boot disabled) which results in my laptop booting to straight to Windows even when USB ODD is first in the boot order. Please tell me how to boot to a Linux DVD or USB on this machine! This was major purchase for me, and if I can't install Linux on it, this laptop is totally useless for me. Please respond.
