Preferred Solution: There is one possibility

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi,

The CPU in my PC (upgraded to Win 7 Home Premium x 64) Dell OPTIPLEX 520 is (Pentium D 2.8GHz) old and slow. The MoBo model Dell 0RJ290.
What CPU with max. performance is acceptable for this MoBo, if at all?
My goal is to speed up my PC on the cheap. Would Microsoft require a new product key or refuse giving out one, or the present key will suffice?
Thank you
barsim

A:CPU upgrade possibility?

You aren't going to want to hear this, but no new CPU in that system will make much of a difference.......and I doubt you will be able to "feel" any difference at all IF you can find parts for it. Time to save up for a new build that you will be happy with instead of sinking money into an old computer that won't be any better off than when you started.

Hey guys, so I did something super stupid. My hard drive self destructed and had to get a new one. So instead of installing windows xp full version like I should have (I was out of it that day ) I installed a windows 7 upgrade version. Now of course when I tried to authenticate it wouldn't let me, hitting cancel after realizing what I had done it proceeded to install this very very basic version of windows 7 on the computer. I found my xp full version cd but can't downgrade because there was no previous version of windows installed and hence no windows.old file I can use. Can't format either as this is the only harddrive on my comp. What are my options? and please don't make me spend more money on the full version of windows

Well my parents computer got a huge virus on it a while a go and they took it into get it fixed. It seemed to be working fine but since I know a little about computers I knew that there was too much junk and stuff on it. I formated it and put windows 98SE back on it but after awhile I got an exploer problem and windows didn't load. So i formated again and put windows XP on it. It works alot better just slow because we need more RAM. I ran a norton anti-virus check and nothing came up. So i thought that problem was fixed, but it wasn't now I get a message saying "some symantec product settings have been changes by an unauthorized program. this can indicate that an attacker or virus is attempting to diable your protection." Then it goes on about your settings will be changed back and you need to restart you computer. Click ok to do so. I click ok but nothing happens. the computer still boots fine but the message still comes up. WHAT DO I DO?

I've come to the end of my tether. And I apologise, this is a long one, but I really can't solve it! I'm running out of hair to pull out!

A friend of mine brought around her computer which stopped working after her boyfriend was on there one day - he's known for downloading unsafe files (usually at the behest of someone who calls himself a techie but sort of lost his stride after dos). The problem is that it starts to boot up, the screen flickers black over and over, until the computer restarts itself and it all goes again. Usually doesn't even make it to Windows, but if it does, then there's weird black pixels, or letters are a bit garbled, and I even saw the white "o" in "Windows" disappear - but the shadow stayed perfectly in place as if the o was a layer just taken off!

Safe mode works perfectly fine. It just takes absolutely ages to boot up.

Before I get too into it, she's running XP home, sp2, P4 2.8ghz, 512mb ram, and I reckon the video was a Geforce4 440mx. It's only from 2004, so it's not all that old.

I've since read that this sort of symptom is generally a video card thing, and when I get home (I'm at work) I am going to test out one of our old cards in there. However, if you read on, this still doesn't make any sense.

I assumed it was viral, so popped on Antivir and got nothing of interest.

So, I tested booting up her hdd on my machine. It still showed the same symptoms, so I... Read more

A:I've eliminated every possibility - does anyone have any ideas?

I would remove the video card and reinsert it. sound like a hardware issue to me and not the drive.

I would also wrap the guy up in duct tape....or set him free in Jurassic Park, so he can be in his element. Ok not kind....but common.

You'll have to be patient with me here because my computer knowledge is minimal and I am incapable of performing the most rudimentary tasks.

I always have the latest free versions of Zonealarm and Avast, and both show nothing suspicious. I have taken online tests that scan my ports and these have given me the result that I have nothing to worry about.

Yesterday my computer was making a lot of 'vr-vm...vr-vm...vr-vm' noises whenever I was online so I did a Netstat -an to check what connections were established. The ports on my computer were all safe ones, but in my panic and computer retardation I read into the external addresses I was connected to, and there were ones starting with '69' and '87', and googling those numbers came up with ports that were traditionally used by attackers.

Since these were external addresses, is it a mere coincidence that some of the addresses started with these numbers? Do I have anything to worry about? Help.

I dont understand your post: you said you googled for the ip addresses and came up with port numbers?

A:Is there any possibility of using two hdmi ports from my pc

Using an addon card will almost always disable the onboard gpu. You could simply purchase a video card that has two HDMI ports. Or you could simply use the DVI port. The only difference between the HDMI port and the DVI port is that the HDMI port also supports audio. The video signal (quality) is the same as they are both a digital signal.

Greetings,

The other day i received a phone call from a friend, who claimed they clicked something and now the computer was dead.

I drove out and found the computer infected with security tool. The item that suprised me was that the operating systems was Vista premium 64 bit edition.

To make a long story short i was able to remove the infection with malware bytes.

I also did a scan with Spybot S&D, also SuperAnti Spyware.

All scans turned out clean once i removed some items with malwarebytes.

I also ran a scan from ESET and the scan turned up nothing.

I ran ADSspy, and deleted two entires realated to the recylce bin.

Once finished I applied all immunizations from spybot search and destory, as well as javacools spyware blaster. Also i updated their Anti-Virus (McAfee... yuck). A final note was i installed Microsoft security Essentials, i might as well test it on more compuetrs than just mine.

The computer seems fine, my question is

Do root kits exist for 64 bit operating systems and if so, what tool should i run to try and find this.

Note: This computer is not at my disposal, this will be something i may check on the weekend.

Hello!

I was not entirely sure where to post this topic so I chose this forum seeing as it seemed the place to put it.
Anyways my mom is not the most technologically smart person in the world, and she knows nothing of phishing attacks.
I literally just caught her like 15 minutes ago filling in information to a "WalMart Gift Card" site. She did this
by using the Bing! search engine, searching WalMart, and clicking on the "sponsored" link that said "Official WalMart"
website. After this she said she filled in information, and decided to stop because it asked for her cell phone
number. Being the paranoid generalized anxiety disordered person I am, I got really worried that she might have given
more information that she was willing to tell me. (She claims she only gave her address and name, but I don't believe her,
as well as don't believe her when she told me it was the first time she ever did this sort of thing). So, my question is,
is there any possibility of identity theft? Should I be worried? I know that some websites can retrieve information without
having a new page loaded or a continuation of the "information process" (although she did hit the continue button anyways).
Thanks to anyone who helps me out!
Andrew

Recently my computer crashed and I reinstalled Windows and formatted my computer (Windows Vista Home Premium). I created a backup (consisting mostly of photos and old school documents) after my computer crashed using an advanced option provided by my computer. The first I reinstalled Windows, I didn't format my computer. It told me that in order to perform updates, it needed to restart my computer, so I tried restarting it, but after waiting a long time for it to log off, a blue screen appeared saying "A problem...". I couldn't read it because it disappeared really quickly, but it obviously meant that something was wrong. When I turned my computer on again, it went back to Startup Repair, and I reinstalled Windows again. I didn't format my computer. This time it froze and ended up shutting down. I turned my computer on again and reinstalled Windows, but this time I formatted my computer. It seems fine now, but I'm worried that my backup holds some sort of virus or the cause of my computer crashes. If i move my backup onto this computer again, is there a possibility that my computer will crash again?

Well, I have been under the impression that people are spying on me..I don't know if it's through an installed program..or if there is some kind of tracking device or something that connects to my internet and follows it..but either way, I want to make sure that's not the case.

Currently, I am monitoring the remote addresses in TCPview, and was wondering if there are supposed to be a bunch of different IPs and what not?  I can post a picture, but I don't know if that would be a detriment to my security.

Process Explorer gave no indication as to there being any malicious programs all receiving a 0 score from VirusTotal, save for a few processes with no score (System Idle Processes and Interrupts)  Neither of which I think are malicious, yet still somewhat skeptical about interrupts.

Currently using Malware Bytes Anti-Rootkit right now to see if that is the issue.  So,for now, I'm just keeping updated on the situation and asking for any other suggestions.

Now that your log is properly posted, you should NOT make further changes to your computer (install/uninstall programs, use special fix tools, delete files, edit the registry, etc) unless advised by a Malware Removal Team member, nor should you continue to ask for help elsewhere. Doing so can result in system changes which may not show it the log you already posted. Further, any modifications you make on your own may cause confusion for the helper assisting you and could complicate the malware removal process which would extend the time it takes to clean your computer. From this point on the Malware Removal Team should be the only members that you take advice from, until they have verified your log as clean. Please be patient. It may take a while to get a response because the Malware Removal Team members are very busy working logs posted before yours. They are volunteers who will help you out as soon as possible. Once you have made your post and are waiting, please DO NOT make another reply until it has been responded to by a member of the Malware Removal Team. Generally the staff checks the forum for postings that have 0 replies as this makes it easier for them to identify those who have not been helped. If you post another response there will be 1 reply. A team member, looking for a new log to work may assume another HJT Team member is already assisting you and not open the thread to respond. To avoid confusion, I am closing this topic.

A week ago, while playing a WoW, the screen goes black and a moment later it looks like it is snowing red and blue dots. A second later and the display returns but all of the textures are in the wrong positions and torn in different locations.

Eventually booting up would cause the same thing to occur from the BIOS screen onward. I can't get a recognizable display to even work in windows now. My first guess was of course that the video card had went bad, yet it was less then a year old. The whole machine is.

I've already hooked up a new moniter with the same results. I've also put ina different PCI express video card, the problem was a bit different with a different card but still unmanagablle. Letters and numbers would display on the screen but would be of different colors and would periodically change. Say for example: The word "Number" would switch between "Number" and "Jumber". The first letter would alternate between N and J.

What would cause this to happen? It dosn't sound like a video issue at all at this point unless the PCI Express slot has went bad but different color numbers and alternating letters and numbers dosn't seem to fall anywhere in that catagory? Am I looking at a mobo or maybe a CPU problem?

A:Odd Mobo issue, possibility?

this could be hard to isolate. Simplify by removing everything except the video card, ram, and mobo w/ CPU.

then POST. if you still have issues it is your mobo if you have swapped video cards.

It will be useless in conjunction with a SATA 2.5 inch SSD because the Intel Rapid Storage software used for acceleration will not let one SSD accelerate another SSD. Nor can the mSSD be the boot drive if a hard drive or SSD is installed in the main 2.5 inch bay. You already have the fastest configuration possible for your machine.  Your Service Manual If this is "the Answer" please click "Accept as Solution" to help others find it.

A friend of mine who lives in another state recently advised me of coming home from work one day and finding her computer off. She normally leaves it on all day and has it connected to a high-capacity battery-backup unit.

When she turned on her computer, it didn't even stay on long enough for the desktop to load before it shut down again.

She took it in for repair and was advised that the processor cooling fan had stopped working, which is why the computer was shutting down when the processor started getting too hot.

The processor cooling fan was replaced, and she now has the computer back home and working fine.

My question is: Would this have caused some residual damage to the processor that will rear its ugly head later and cause problems?

------------------------------------------------------------------

A:Solved: Any Possibility Of Processor Damage?

Modern CPUs are designed this way:

If temperatures raise beyond a certain threshold (Depends on the CPU) they will start throttling. This means that the CPU will run slower so less heat will be produced. If temperatures continue to raise then the CPU will shut down in order to prevent possible damage. That's what must happened to your friend's computer.

So according to my knowledge any damage must have been avoided and the CPU will run fine. I personally had a similar problem with my C2D E6300. Well it's running flawlessly for more than 2 years, so I guess your friend will be fine.

If you still want to check you can run a CPU stress test (Many programs do that - Everest is a good example). This will ensure that the CPU is running stable. Honestly though, I believe that it's just fine.

Hi, everyone. I'm going to order a new computer, and I had a last minute question I was hoping to get an answer for.

This is the computer I plan on ordering:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16883229052

My question is this: I have a 3 year old Dell monitor. It is currently hooked up to the 8800 GT video card in the system I'm posting on now. Is there any chance that my monitor will be incompatable with my new system, or that I'll need to find some special drivers to make it work with the new system, or should it plug and play just fine?

Thanks in advance for the help.

A:Any possibility of monitor incompatability with new computer?

It will work fine, you'll only need the graphics card drivers.

Hi!
My video card recently broke ( Sapphire R9 270x ) so im getting a new one very soon, but my DELL inspirion 660 is to small to be able to fit any decent card in it, so therefore im also getting a new PC case. However, i have read in different places that the UEFI bios on the inspirion 660 aren't compatible with many of the newer graphic cards such as the GTX980 series, is this true? And if so what can i do to fix this? get a new motherboard altogether?
Also, are there any other general tips and things i need to know before upgrading my case to a bigger one?

Dear, A few weeks ago my the Hard Drive Disk crashed, it was not possible to repair the HDD, so I ordered a new HDD.I thought I was able to download and install Windows 7 on the new HDD with the product on the back of my laptop, however when I try to download it from the Microsoft website I receive a message saying there is a problem with the validation request. Upon further research this is only able for retail versions, not pre-installed versions. So how do I now get Windows 7 on my laptop? Product: HP Notebook 4530SSerial: CNU1263BN9OS: Windows 7 Home Premium (x64) If I need to provide any more information please let me know. Kind regards, Mayuur

A:HDD crashed - No windows 7 recovery possibility

Hi: You will have to contact HP in the country you live in and order a set of recovery disks for your notebook. Have the serial number handy to give to the customer services rep. http://www8.hp.com/us/en/contact-hp/ww-contact-us.html Since you have a business-class notebook, contact the business support section.

Can Win7 run successfully on this hardware?  At this time there is an old xp os that cannot be updated because the browser will not load internet pages.  If it is possible, where is the best source of win7?  Memory has been expanded and extra HDDs have been added.Advice appreciated, thanks, John.

A:Possibility to install Win 7 on Pavilion a6009n

Hi, John: You should be able to run W7 just fine on that PC. The only possible issue would be that the card reader won't work. It will work on Vista but I don't know about W7. Run the free windows 7 upgrade advisor and see what it reports. http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=20 As far as getting a copy of W7... The cheapest way I can think of is to find a W7 Home Premium upgrade kit on eBay. New and sealed would be best, but if the product has been used and the OS removed from the PC it was previously installed on, you can reactivate the software by phone by calling the Microsoft toll free activation phone number. You would have to do a clean (custom) install upgrading from XP to W7.

i was just wondering, I successfully changed my system start sound from stock to my own thing, but is it possible to switch out the .wav with another one of the same name to change the system start sound whenever i want without having to go through all that f8 and cmd prompt crap.

hopefully there is an answer with experience instead of just me jumping in and experimenting with possible f-ups

A:system start sound possibility

It's stored in the system file Imageres.dll. WAVE/5080 (the only one).

Hi

I was playing Mass Effect on my PC when it crashed with a BSOD. When I started it it happens the following:

- if started in secure mode - it gives a BSOD with no name.
- if the repairing option is selected - while loading the first bar of files it resets with no BSOD.
- normal start - it gives a BSOD.
- start with windows 7 CD in -> resets while loading windows with no BSOD.

I was hopping someone could lend me a hand like changing some topics in the BIOS, since I am not used to change those options risking to compromise the machine integrity.

My first priority is to recover the files, but I need a open OS for that... I am trying to get a name of one of the bluescreens but only the first had a title and I ran out of time before taking note of it.

- x86 (32-bit) or x64 -> x86 (32-bit)
- the original installed OS on the system -> Windows 7 Ultimate
- an OEM or full retail version -> It is not original of the PC and I have used it many times.

- What is the age of system (hardware)? 4 years
- What is the age of OS installation (have you re-installed the OS?) 1 and a half year

EDIT: I managed to open the OS and copied some of the error details:

Last spring, I bought Windows 7 through the website for my old Compaq laptop. That laptop is now useless, and I've had to move on to a new Dell that currently runs on Windows Vista.

I would hate to wast $60 on an operating system I've used for only a year. I was wondering if anyone knew if there is a way to move my Windows 7 to my new laptop without having to rebuy the whole thing.

A:Possibility of moving Windows 7 to new computer?

That copy is yours to use forever now. You can always use it without having to rebuy it. This is, as per the EULA, so long as you run the 1 product key to 1 computer. If the Compaq is deactivated (or wiped, etc.), then you again have that product key for use.

What form did you buy Win 7 in? (OEM, Full Retail, Upgrade, download???)
Do you still have the product key?
Or am I misunderstanding you that you are more concerned about transferring the system with files, etc intact?

I currently have two computers that are connected through a router. The question I have is I want to put another computer in my son's room but it is difficult to get the wiring there. We are using Optimum Online. The computer is running under Windows 98SE. The main computer is running under Windows XP. Can I use a wireless router in his room for this computer without having to run the wires?

The computer already has a 10/100 ethernet card in it.

Thanks!

I recently read somewhere that pirated Windows CD are backdoored and viruses are installed with windows installation. Is it true? Is it possible for an attacker to do something like that?

I think the possibility of this is less but it maybe possible.

Also please point me to any security articles regarding this.

Thanks!

A:What is the possibility of Windows installation CD being backdoored?

I would think it would be fairly easy to add things to the default ISO with programs like nlite or even Microsoft's Windows Automated Installation Kit. Using a Pirated install image is one of the easiest ways to compromise your system. Be carful what you link to or talk about or you could end up violating the forum rules against discussing pirating windows.

Hi, got a computer with two hard drives, and both acting funny, Cannot reinstall win98SE on either of them. The OS had stopped functioning. Is there a DOS virus scan that fits on 1.44 floppies? Can I just Repartion the HD's including the fdisk/mbr command? Would that eliminate any possibilities of any virus being on the HD? There is no important data on the disks.

A:repartition to kill all possibility of virus?

If you can, then running the fdisk and fdisk /mbr should eliminate all traces of most viruses. The ones that it wouldn't get rid of would be those rare hardware destroying ones.

This method is usually the last resort, as it will get rid of all info on your system, one step below writing zeros to your hard drive. But since you have no important data to lose, go for it.

If you want to go the whole hog of writing zeroes to your hard drive, which effectively restores it to factory condition, then go to the website of the Hard drive manufacturer, and look for the software tool there.

Hello :),

I've been cleaning out my computer for spyware/ad-ware/viruses and I came accross something I couldnt clean cause it keeps coming back... SpywareQuake and Spyfalcon, I think there intertwined. I used the tool (smitRem.exe) and I merged the (FixSF.reg) and did what it sayed however there still there, and I didnt even know it until it was to late. The computer wont let me turn on the windows firewall however I manged to get back Regedit, Command Prompt and System Restore. About the windows firewall it says (in the Windows Security Center) it says that I dont have a firewall nor anti-virus but I do... I have Nod32 (anti-virus) and Look 'N' Stop (Firewall). And ewido gets to a point and then freezes so I cant do a malware scan. I do, however do some file sharing (BitTornado/uTorrent and eMulePlus) but I scan every file. Anyways, thank you :) Heres my HJT log...
