ACPI bug - affects X1C6, X1Y3, X280, T480s, T480, T580, P52s, possibly more.

Q: ACPI bug - affects X1C6, X1Y3, X280, T480s, T480, T580, P52s, possibly more.

This bug deserves more attention than it is currently receiving. It should be pinned in every forum with an affected machine, so that the owners of those machines are aware that it exists. It is currently squirreled away in the T series forum, under the outdated title "T480s - ACPI bug". I have asked that the thread title be updated and received no response. I have to presume that Lenovo did not see my request (in which case, they'll see it now). It would also be nice to get some kind of status update. For example, I am still waiting for confirmation that the patches from the newer thread were sent to engineering (see this message).

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello, There's a bug in the ACPI tables that affects all of the machines listed in the title. The bug causes heavy CPU usage on one thread due to frequent ACPI interrupts. The symptoms are a slow system, and high CPU temperatures (idles around 65 degrees Celsius). Some operating systems may mitigate the symptoms, but the bug is present regardless. The following circumstances trigger it:-powering on the laptop-waking from suspend (and possibly hibernate - untested) The following actions prevent it:-reboot the laptop (temporary fix)-disable thunderbolt in the UEFI settings (permanent fix - with latest UEFI updates) The official UEFI update changelogs for all of these machines make explicit mention of this issue: "-(Fix) Fix an issue where system may become hot by system interrupts when Thundrebolt is disabled in ThinkPad Setup - Security - I/O Port Access." Unfortunately, the bug was not actually fixed. The solution that was implemented is only a bandage for the "disabled" thunderbolt state. This patch should resolve the problem. This patch would then remove the bandage of the official fix, since it should no longer be necessary. I will leave that for your engineers to decide. These patches were made for the T480s, but should apply equally to all affected machines.

This post is partially to request assistance and partially to voice aggravation and disappointment. My old laptop was failing and I was in need of one for travel with WWAN capability. I initially bought an X1C6 that showed the WWAN card as enabled in BIOS. When I found out that the card was not present, I returned the laptop. After doing further research, I settled on a T480s that was WWAN upgradable, expectating a wait for the EM7565 with FRU 01AX762. Now the Fibocom L850-GL with FRU 01AX786 is available for new builds, but I cannot find where to buy it on the site or elsewhere; if this is not simply due to me being unable to navigate the poorly-designed Lenovo site, it effectively punishes anyone who ordered early. Finally, I tried my old EM7345 with FRU 04X6014 and encountered the 1802 error for an unauthorized device. Researching that further led to understand that Lenovo uses a whitelist - another punishment. I am now ready to return this laptop as well unless I can make some progress before traveling again. I would not be surprised if a class-action lawsuit were brought against Lenovo and any other manufacturers restricting individuals from making use of their own legitimately purchased hardware, especially when false or incomplete information is pushed by the company. If anyone knows where to obtain either LTE card, I would appreciate it.

Looks like the Fibocom is available on the Lenovo Encompass site based on the part number you posted.

I currently have T580 with pre-installed WWAN module (Fibocom L850-GL) and trying to get to work it on Linux. It works perfectly fine on Windows. So far I discovered that Windows driver uses PCIe protocol to communicate with WWAN module, but Linux is supported apparently only through USB protocol, and if PCIe is enabled, the module ignores all USB commands according to its hardware specs document (page 26) - https://www.mev-elektronik.com/files/MEV%20Elektronik%20Service/produkt-downloads/rf-microwave-wirel... Fibocom recommendation is to disable PCIe in BIOS, that is not supported by stock ThinkPad. Thus in Linux the device is only displayed as "Wireless controller: [0d40]: Intel Corporation Device 7360 (rev 01)" through lspci , and nothing on lsusb . Any suggestions how to make it work on Linux? As an alternative I'm considering getting another WWAN module, but it's quite likely it will not work due to whitelists. The only other module that is whitelisted for sure is L830-EB, that does not have global coverage and thus doesn't work in the US or China, even so it was reported that it's Linux-compatible (USB-mode only). Maybe there is a patched BIOS that has whitelists removed? Wondering if there are Linux enthusiasts who are also looking for a way of using WWAN.

Hi there, I would appreciate any feedback on the actual difference between these T and L series laptops. I am returning to a Thinkpad (last one was T410s) after a few desolate years with the Yoga Pro 3. My usage is home business that requires regular videoconerencing and typical web navigation/document processing. Security features are important.  I have been anxiously awaiting the quad core 2018 releases as I was told by one of my IT guys that quad core best supports consistent high quality video.  I had assumed I would return to T series and didn't really even know the L series existed until a few weeks ago. As I'm comparing them though I'm wondering if the extra $ for the T-series is really worth it. I know all these laptops are  new so I don't imagine too many people have had experiences with them, but any research you've done or experience with their predecessors would be helpful. Last time I wandered from the T series I regretted it and don't want to make that mistake again.  I'm only looking at 8th Gen processors. Prefer the i7, but am curious if that will really make a significant difference over an i5 for my particular usage needs. Will buy with or upgrade to at least 16GB RAM. Do like the touchscreen but can live without it.  Thanks! Sean

Dear Readers, I am planning to buy a new Thinkpad T serie 14 inch and I am wondering which model I should pick.By any chance, does anybody know which housing (chassis) has the best build quality in terms of thermal design and fan noise? In other words which of the three housings will be running the coolest and quietest? Is it a good reason to think it should be the t480 because it has more room for airflow? Thank you in advance!

I've been bothered by excessive heat from my X1 Yoga 3rd gen for a while. I am aware of https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-X-Series-Laptops/X1-Yoga-3rd-gen-CPU-frequency-pegged-at-max/m... and https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-X-Series-Laptops/X1-Yoga-3rd-gen-fan-noise/m-p/4048250 and sure, things got better after I applied the fix from the first thread and the BIOS upgrade from the last, so I was happy for a while. But I'm still wondering, is the X1Y3 supposed to be this hot? I tend to use my laptops in the sofa with the machine ... well, on top of my lap. And it feels like I'm having a small radiator there, not a computer. It's not burning my lap but it's definitely uncomfortable. Sometimes I have to put a magazine under to protect my thighs from the heat. And I'm not even doing anything demanding. It's just constantly somewhere between warm and hot, no matter the CPU load. Other premium laptops don't get this hot. My Dell at work doesn't even get warm at all and neither did my old Sony VAIO Z1. Is this machine meant to be uncomfortably hot? Are other Lenovo's hot too (this is my first Lenovo)? Could there be something wrong with my machine? Is it worth calling support or would a replacement machine be just as hot? It would be great to get some input from other X1Y3 users. I thought I could live with it but I'm getting increasingly annoyed.

A:X1Y3 too hot

I have one and I never have had a problem with heat.  I wrote a review on the machine when it was first being released and I ran stress testing with no problems.  I do not tend to use laptops on a sofa or a bed, but on a hard surface instead.  The air intakes are on the bottom and a soft surface will completely block the flow.

Hey all, Just got my X1Y3 yesterday and loving it. Upon trying to take out the pen, I couldn't remove it with normal or slightly-higher-than-normal force. I didn't want to pull too hard at risk of damaging internals. Googled the issue, seems like others have had the issue in the past, with the resolution being unscrew the back and see if you can get the pen out that way, lo and behold, got the pen out and it worked without issue. Tried putting the pen back in through the side and can't get it out again. Upon inspection it looks like the internal latch is catching the lip right near the end of the pen. Contacted support and they said my computer was out of warranty (but I bought it last week and got it yesterday...). They're supposedly working to fix that right now, which they will then attempt to figure out my pen situation. I just wanted to see if anyone else had this issue before. Thanks!

Hi, It's me again with a new issue with my X1Y3. It just doesn't end does it?Previously I had issues with losing battery life despite the laptop being shutdown. I was recommended to turn off fast boot in Windows 10 which seems to have solved the issue relatively speaking. Now I'm noticing if I boot up the laptop after having had it shutdown for a few hours, it lights up the keyboard, makes a polyphonic beep at boot, gives a blank screen, then the keyboard backlight turns off. I then have to hold the power button down for a few seconds then press the button again for the laptop to boot normally. I've tried going through the threads that explain what each beep means. This beep does not fit into any of the listed beeps.  edit: I'd just like to add this tends to occur when the laptop is booted from battery only. If it's plugged in the issue doesn't seem to occur, at least for now.

Apparently some people have this problem of getting permanent keyboard marks on their screens. Obviously applying enough pressure on the surface would do this, but for normal usage, is this something I need to worry about?

I had some marks that were hard to clean off on my old X1 Carbon Gen 3 after about 2 yrs of use. During that time I took a two-month trip and the backpad design may have applied a lot of pressure on the covers while I flew between Europe and Canada.

TL;DR: Bought a new ($2K+) X1 Yoga 3rd Gen which tooks weeks to arrive.Laptop had a defective screen, sent it back for repairs.Haven't been able to get a straight answer on when I'm getting my laptop back - which is probably another several weeks from now.So here's the story:I ordered the new X1 Yoga 3 at the top of April. It took weeks for it to arrive (much later than guaranteed). A small token refund was promised -- which I still have not received. When I finally received the laptop, the HDR screen was defective. (Did all the software-based tweaks, it was clearly a hardwarde defect.)Shipped it back ASAP to have it fixed. The promised turnaround was 6 business days. It has now been 10 days and there's been absolutely no updates on an estimated time of arrival. I contacted support - which bounced me from place to place until they told me to contact the depot.I tried to call the depot (which took me 2 days worth of calls to get someone) - and STILL got the runaround. The person on the other end literally told me she had no idea when the laptop would be ready - "it could be a week, or two weeks, or longer than that."I could purchase a brand new laptop today and get it faster than this new, defective machine! This is absurd. Especially since this is a top-of-the-line laptop which came defective. And yet -- No compensation. No ETA. No replacements. Worst customer support.

I've already small scratches, that are barely visible, on my screen. This is from using the pen only. With time, it should collect a lot more scratches and I wonder if the anti-glare coating will be removable, if I want to, in the future? There is obviously a soft layer on the gorilla glass screen on X1Y3 and it is prone to tiny scratches, even from the included pen.

yeah the GTX 280 is the top (single GPU) option out now, and its blisteringly fast, however at its high price people are looking at the ATi 4870, its a much cheaper option that is almost as fast. I dont have either myself, but you need to make sure the rest of the computer can keep up, if it can those cards are incredibly fast.

Hi there, i recently bought a new X1C6 with i7 8550. I wanted to use it for university and as a midrange gaming station (egpu) at home. But my plans started to fail as i got fps drops in almost all games. I did some information gathering and saw the following: At first the CPU starts to boost to pl2 (29W) for 30s or so. After that it drops the TDP to 23W (thats pl1). After a while i can see in hwinfo64 that the pl1 slowly starts to drop to 13W without any reason! My temps are pretty pretty good even at 29W it barely touches 90C and at 23W it hovers between 70 and 75C.Is this normal behavior of U-CPUs?Can i do something to prevent dropping?

Greetings fellow Thinkpadders. I received my X1C6 about two weeks ago, and all is well except the fingerprint reader. I am patched up to date according to both Windows Update and Vantage, and that has included two BIOS updates since I first unboxed it. The fingerprint reader does not come back after a sleep or hibernate. That is, if I Restart, I can log in with my fingerprint -- the white LED is on and so forth. But if I suspend and resume, no white LED, and fingerprint doesn't work at Windows Logon -- I have to use my PIN or password. Vantage's hardware scan shows nothing wrong. Anyone finding stability with the X1C6 and the Ultra Dock to not be perfect?  I'm finding sometimes the laptop won't wake from sleep properly, requiring me to hit the power button on the dock (to put back into sleep) and then to hit the power button again (to wake it up, which usually resolves the issue).  Sometimes when it wakes from sleep, I lose my background (just a teal colour) and it goes to a black background (which I can revert back to teal right away in my desktop options).  Also, every time I wake up, I find all my open apps are now only on Monitor 1 instead of where I left them (some on Monitor 1, some on Monitor 2) requiring me to spend a few seconds reorganizing.  Finally, I find that each time I wake up, some (not all) of the icons in my taskbar next to the clock begin to get blurry, with each wake worse until I log out / log back in.   I do keep the laptop in clamshell mode when docked, with only my two external monitors in use and I have the laptop set up to not sleep when I close the laptop lid to ensure clamshell is as stable as possible.   All of my drivers are up to date, and I am on the Windows 10 April update that just came out (but the issues began before the update).  I never had issues like this on previous ThinkPad models with the previous Ultra Dock or OneLink Plus docks.

I'm a desktop support tech, and the company gave me pick of any laptop I wanted for myself. I chose Lenovo because ThinkPad used to mean something.I have an M.2 that I want to install, but I need the adapter kit. So, Friday I opened a chat window and waited. Keep in mind, I'm working, so it's easiest for me to open the chat and wait while I work on other things; I do it with every vendor that offers the option. I waited for an hour, no dice. So I decide to fill out the form for lenovo to call me. It's over 24 hours later, and nothing. In this time frame I've had multiple Dell, Cisco & CDW issues resolved or at least triaged. This is a simple freaking issue. I looked up the part in the part finder but couldn't add it to cart. Where the hell are you, Lenovo? Did I just have my employer spend $1500 on a laptop that we'll get zero support for? To say I'm disappointed that the legendary ThinkPad is being backed so poorly is a major understatement.

My colluege got a newer P-Series model with a dedicated NVIDIA Quadro. I am planing to go for the upcomming P52, if the P51/P52s is able to do it, I am more relaxed at order time

Hello, I am thinking to buy P52s with NVidia Quadro P500 gpu, and would like to know if I can completely disable Intel HD graphics in BIOS? I had ThinkPad p70 before and I remember I was able to disable Intel HD in BIOS and run only using NVidia discrete gpu. Can I do the same with P52s? Thanks.

I just got my new P52s yesterday. The problem is cpu is basically always above 60 C unless I close all apps. And the fan is basically always on and spinning very fast. I updated all the drivers and I checked the cpu load was mostly around 20%-30% when I install some software, it barley went up to 50%.  So basically I couldn?t use it now. Sometimes the fan even spins very fast when I just login windows.  Is there any kind of solution for this?

I've been troubleshooting random errors (most of which were resolved when I corrected the jumper settings for the CPU), mostly freezing during bootup or problems with the ATA RAID driver. My original set of problems can be found here: http://forums.techguy.org/t247393&highlight=acpi+uniprocessor.html
The computer still freezes one out of every 4 bootups while the Windows splash screen is showing, and I have gotten the occasional blue screen ("Driver IRQ not less or equal" the only recurring one). A friend of a friend is certain that the problem is the HAL driver, and I'm curious about what the difference between the drivers is.

My AMD XP 2500 Soyo board (single processor board) under Win2K SP4 is using an ACPI Uniprocessor setup... he says it should just read "Advanced Configuration Power Interface (ACPI) PC"... is there a difference? Is it possible that I should switch to the second one to change any issues my computer might be having?
If not, what should I be looking for that might be causing the freezing on bootup?

anybody have an answer?

Lenovo Facebook support sent me here to post the issue as they expect it to be a Firmware/Driver problem: There is a serious compatibility issue between the T480s and the iPhone8 - tested on various units of both devices, with various cables. All BIOS/FW/SW/Drivers on both devices were updated, issues remain before and after Updates: It is not possible to connect iPhone8 via USB to T480s - or only after several attempts or a reboot. On the right USB port connection goes on and off in seconds, on the left port charging connection remains stable, but no data connection is posible. We tested this with 4 different T480s, 6 different iPhone8 models and various different cables - therefore it is definitely a FW/Driver Issue on the Lenovo side - as the phones work with any other Notebook. If the phone however is attached to the right port while the Notebook is booting, iPhone8 asks for authorization (while T480s boots) and then everything works fine. Lenovo Facebook support says this clearly points out to a driver/firmware issue. Trying to plug in the USB port not all the way in but leave a 2-3mm space before the USB cable fully contacts the port (as suggested by Lenovo Facebook support) does not help. Sooo there we are - we tested and replicated this issue with several brand new T480s-machines (core i5-8350U) and a number of different iPhone8 with different cables. What solution does the Lenovo engineers propose? BestCarLazar

Hi everyone, I was setting up my brandnew X280 and after installing Windows 10 Pro I downloaded Lenovo System Update tool. It proposed a number of updates including a BIOS update and I let it do its job.Last I recall was the window about BIOS update where I hit enter (or ok).The noteboks was sitting in a docking station, battery fully charged. Next time I checked the progress the screen is black and the white power LED is slowly flashing (like being in standby). However I can't wake it up. It will just keep flashing.  As I can't take out the battery on a X280 what can I do? Pressing the power button for an extended period of time didn't do anything. Is there a hidden key stroke combination or do I have to wait a couple of days (weeks) until the battery has run out? I'm afraid the BIOS update failed and the system is bricked, even though I followed the instructions by the letter. Any suggestions are more than welcome! Thanks. Q.

Hello all, Long time thinkpad user from the W700 time haha. Just wanted to drop a line after recently getting a thinkpad x270 instead of the x280. I got a little worried with the design philosophy of the thinkpad x270 --> x280 lineage.  I got the x270 because of the bigger removable battery capacity along with the ethernet port among other ports.  I welcome the usb-c port in the x270 and glad to see more of that in the x280. But the fact that the x280 does not have an ethernet port along with a non-removable battery with the option to add the huge super cylindrical battery was a deal breaker for me and I see that the x280 was a step backwards in terms of a design / functionality standpoint from the x270. I am just getting a little bit worried about the design team and their vision for what the x2## series have in the future. The x280 seems to be just a cheaper version of the x1 carbon.  I have the x1 carbon btw lol. Got a few thinkpads... and I like the design for the x1 carbon and i think that to remain as it is...for the thinkpad x1 carbon. I dont want that spilling over into the x2## series. That is supposed to be a pure work horse mobile productivity device.  Anyway what do you guys all think about the direction which the x280 is taking from the x270 which I thought (referencing to the x270) was a pure great work horse laptop with an AMAZING battery life which is absolutely CRITICAL to the x200 line of thinkpa...
