ACPI bug - affects X1C6, X1Y3, X280, T480s, T480, T580, P52s, possibly more.

Q: ACPI bug - affects X1C6, X1Y3, X280, T480s, T480, T580, P52s, possibly more.

This bug deserves more attention than it is currently receiving. It should be pinned in every forum with an affected machine, so that the owners of those machines are aware that it exists. It is currently squirreled away in the T series forum, under the outdated title "T480s - ACPI bug". I have asked that the thread title be updated and received no response. I have to presume that Lenovo did not see my request (in which case, they'll see it now). It would also be nice to get some kind of status update. For example, I am still waiting for confirmation that the patches from the newer thread were sent to engineering (see this message).

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello, There's a bug in the ACPI tables that affects all of the machines listed in the title. The bug causes heavy CPU usage on one thread due to frequent ACPI interrupts. The symptoms are a slow system, and high CPU temperatures (idles around 65 degrees Celsius). Some operating systems may mitigate the symptoms, but the bug is present regardless. The following circumstances trigger it:-powering on the laptop-waking from suspend (and possibly hibernate - untested) The following actions prevent it:-reboot the laptop (temporary fix)-disable thunderbolt in the UEFI settings (permanent fix - with latest UEFI updates) The official UEFI update changelogs for all of these machines make explicit mention of this issue: "-(Fix) Fix an issue where system may become hot by system interrupts when Thundrebolt is disabled in ThinkPad Setup - Security - I/O Port Access." Unfortunately, the bug was not actually fixed. The solution that was implemented is only a bandage for the "disabled" thunderbolt state. This patch should resolve the problem. This patch would then remove the bandage of the official fix, since it should no longer be necessary. I will leave that for your engineers to decide. These patches were made for the T480s, but should apply equally to all affected machines.

This post is partially to request assistance and partially to voice aggravation and disappointment. My old laptop was failing and I was in need of one for travel with WWAN capability. I initially bought an X1C6 that showed the WWAN card as enabled in BIOS. When I found out that the card was not present, I returned the laptop. After doing further research, I settled on a T480s that was WWAN upgradable, expectating a wait for the EM7565 with FRU 01AX762. Now the Fibocom L850-GL with FRU 01AX786 is available for new builds, but I cannot find where to buy it on the site or elsewhere; if this is not simply due to me being unable to navigate the poorly-designed Lenovo site, it effectively punishes anyone who ordered early. Finally, I tried my old EM7345 with FRU 04X6014 and encountered the 1802 error for an unauthorized device. Researching that further led to understand that Lenovo uses a whitelist - another punishment. I am now ready to return this laptop as well unless I can make some progress before traveling again. I would not be surprised if a class-action lawsuit were brought against Lenovo and any other manufacturers restricting individuals from making use of their own legitimately purchased hardware, especially when false or incomplete information is pushed by the company. If anyone knows where to obtain either LTE card, I would appreciate it.

Looks like the Fibocom is available on the Lenovo Encompass site based on the part number you posted.

I currently have T580 with pre-installed WWAN module (Fibocom L850-GL) and trying to get to work it on Linux. It works perfectly fine on Windows. So far I discovered that Windows driver uses PCIe protocol to communicate with WWAN module, but Linux is supported apparently only through USB protocol, and if PCIe is enabled, the module ignores all USB commands according to its hardware specs document (page 26) - https://www.mev-elektronik.com/files/MEV%20Elektronik%20Service/produkt-downloads/rf-microwave-wirel... Fibocom recommendation is to disable PCIe in BIOS, that is not supported by stock ThinkPad. Thus in Linux the device is only displayed as "Wireless controller: [0d40]: Intel Corporation Device 7360 (rev 01)" through lspci , and nothing on lsusb . Any suggestions how to make it work on Linux? As an alternative I'm considering getting another WWAN module, but it's quite likely it will not work due to whitelists. The only other module that is whitelisted for sure is L830-EB, that does not have global coverage and thus doesn't work in the US or China, even so it was reported that it's Linux-compatible (USB-mode only). Maybe there is a patched BIOS that has whitelists removed? Wondering if there are Linux enthusiasts who are also looking for a way of using WWAN.

Hi there, I would appreciate any feedback on the actual difference between these T and L series laptops. I am returning to a Thinkpad (last one was T410s) after a few desolate years with the Yoga Pro 3. My usage is home business that requires regular videoconerencing and typical web navigation/document processing. Security features are important.  I have been anxiously awaiting the quad core 2018 releases as I was told by one of my IT guys that quad core best supports consistent high quality video.  I had assumed I would return to T series and didn't really even know the L series existed until a few weeks ago. As I'm comparing them though I'm wondering if the extra $ for the T-series is really worth it. I know all these laptops are  new so I don't imagine too many people have had experiences with them, but any research you've done or experience with their predecessors would be helpful. Last time I wandered from the T series I regretted it and don't want to make that mistake again.  I'm only looking at 8th Gen processors. Prefer the i7, but am curious if that will really make a significant difference over an i5 for my particular usage needs. Will buy with or upgrade to at least 16GB RAM. Do like the touchscreen but can live without it.  Thanks! Sean

Dear Readers, I am planning to buy a new Thinkpad T serie 14 inch and I am wondering which model I should pick.By any chance, does anybody know which housing (chassis) has the best build quality in terms of thermal design and fan noise? In other words which of the three housings will be running the coolest and quietest? Is it a good reason to think it should be the t480 because it has more room for airflow? Thank you in advance!

If I buy the T480 or T480s, which CPU do you recommend? I use it mainly for productivity applications. Thanks

Windows Update is pushing an Intel graphics driver for T480 and T480s that is broken on Windows 10 Pro 1803 OEM. The recommended update on the Lenovo Support site is also broken. After Windows Update has installed this driver, the screen goes black and I have a blinking cursor. The only thing that works is to turn the laptop off and on again but then after initializing windows I'm supposed to be getting the login screen but instead I get a completely backlit black screen that doesn't respond to anything - no cursor, no blinking, nothing. The workaround is topower off and on 3 times in order to go into safe modeuninstall the graphics card driver in Device Manager and check the box to delete the driver fileschange from Yes (recommended) to No (your device might not work as expected) in Control Panel->System->Hardware->Device Installation Settings->Do you want to automatically download manufacturers' apps and custom icons available for your devices.I've experienced this on 2 T480s and 1 T480 in the last 30 hours, so I know it's a general issue. I can reproduce the issue with a brand new laptop fresh out of the box, not domain-joined. The driver that works is from March 2018. Any drivers after this date seem to produce the above issue. The issue doesn't seem to exist on Windows 10 Pro 1709.

I've been bothered by excessive heat from my X1 Yoga 3rd gen for a while. I am aware of https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-X-Series-Laptops/X1-Yoga-3rd-gen-CPU-frequency-pegged-at-max/m... and https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-X-Series-Laptops/X1-Yoga-3rd-gen-fan-noise/m-p/4048250 and sure, things got better after I applied the fix from the first thread and the BIOS upgrade from the last, so I was happy for a while. But I'm still wondering, is the X1Y3 supposed to be this hot? I tend to use my laptops in the sofa with the machine ... well, on top of my lap. And it feels like I'm having a small radiator there, not a computer. It's not burning my lap but it's definitely uncomfortable. Sometimes I have to put a magazine under to protect my thighs from the heat. And I'm not even doing anything demanding. It's just constantly somewhere between warm and hot, no matter the CPU load. Other premium laptops don't get this hot. My Dell at work doesn't even get warm at all and neither did my old Sony VAIO Z1. Is this machine meant to be uncomfortably hot? Are other Lenovo's hot too (this is my first Lenovo)? Could there be something wrong with my machine? Is it worth calling support or would a replacement machine be just as hot? It would be great to get some input from other X1Y3 users. I thought I could live with it but I'm getting increasingly annoyed.

A:X1Y3 too hot

I have one and I never have had a problem with heat.  I wrote a review on the machine when it was first being released and I ran stress testing with no problems.  I do not tend to use laptops on a sofa or a bed, but on a hard surface instead.  The air intakes are on the bottom and a soft surface will completely block the flow.

I got the X1Y3 recently, with the HDR WQHD screen.According to "Machine Info" on pcsupport.lenovo.com, I have a "Monitor: 14.0" WQHD", so it doesn't mention HDR.According to parts lookup on the same site, I have the "14QHD500,HD BZL,LBO+AUO,AES2" LCD assambly, which I guess is the 500 NITS panel. This brings me to the main issue of brightness - I was expecting to be blown away by the 500 NITS brightness...but it just seems like a regular panel and nothing is great/unique/ultra-bright about it, compared to Macbook Air 2015 or Lenovo T440 (2014!) that I own.Several options I can think of here: A) I may not actually have the right panel installedB) It's a software setting I need to tweak (turned off night mode, turned off auro-brightness), or a malfunction. C) It's a malfuntion on my 500 nits panel. D) It's advertised as 500nits but it's not really close to that. Brwosing through these pages I've seen tons of questions about the HDR abilities not fully supported by windows/INF/color-profiles, but I don't know if brightness is also affected by this. Any help will be apprecited!

Hey all, Just got my X1Y3 yesterday and loving it. Upon trying to take out the pen, I couldn't remove it with normal or slightly-higher-than-normal force. I didn't want to pull too hard at risk of damaging internals. Googled the issue, seems like others have had the issue in the past, with the resolution being unscrew the back and see if you can get the pen out that way, lo and behold, got the pen out and it worked without issue. Tried putting the pen back in through the side and can't get it out again. Upon inspection it looks like the internal latch is catching the lip right near the end of the pen. Contacted support and they said my computer was out of warranty (but I bought it last week and got it yesterday...). They're supposedly working to fix that right now, which they will then attempt to figure out my pen situation. I just wanted to see if anyone else had this issue before. Thanks!

I've been troubleshooting random errors (most of which were resolved when I corrected the jumper settings for the CPU), mostly freezing during bootup or problems with the ATA RAID driver. My original set of problems can be found here: http://forums.techguy.org/t247393&highlight=acpi+uniprocessor.html
The computer still freezes one out of every 4 bootups while the Windows splash screen is showing, and I have gotten the occasional blue screen ("Driver IRQ not less or equal" the only recurring one). A friend of a friend is certain that the problem is the HAL driver, and I'm curious about what the difference between the drivers is.

My AMD XP 2500 Soyo board (single processor board) under Win2K SP4 is using an ACPI Uniprocessor setup... he says it should just read "Advanced Configuration Power Interface (ACPI) PC"... is there a difference? Is it possible that I should switch to the second one to change any issues my computer might be having?
If not, what should I be looking for that might be causing the freezing on bootup?

Apparently some people have this problem of getting permanent keyboard marks on their screens. Obviously applying enough pressure on the surface would do this, but for normal usage, is this something I need to worry about?

I'm posting this for others considering this model.  I was cautious given all the complaints about heat, fan, throttling, TB3 Dock issues, etc., etc. After several days setting it up and using it and one day with TB3 Dock connected, I have nothing but positive to report.  It came with 1.22 BIOS and I'm hesitant to update as no problems are evident.  I will ask in a separate thread about that. Temps run between 50 and 70 Centigrade.  A bit warmer than my P50, but I guess still in normal range.  Fan does run, probably at lower speed.  I can't hear it unless I put my ear close or feel the hot air coming out of the right side.  I am using only a single monitor connected to the TB3 Dock.  I tried using the laptop screen and the monitor as extended (dual monitors) and it worked fine.  I'm connecting the monitor to the Dock by HDMI.  I ran the X1 at work yesterday on battery.  9:00am to 6:00pm and still had 30% left!  Moderate use.  I'm not always on the computer at work, but still....! Anyway, I would have appreciated a post like this when I decided to take the risk and order one.  I know forums typically only have problems, but it looked like worse than usual.  I hope this is reassuring to someone. Cheers!

Hi, It's me again with a new issue with my X1Y3. It just doesn't end does it?Previously I had issues with losing battery life despite the laptop being shutdown. I was recommended to turn off fast boot in Windows 10 which seems to have solved the issue relatively speaking. Now I'm noticing if I boot up the laptop after having had it shutdown for a few hours, it lights up the keyboard, makes a polyphonic beep at boot, gives a blank screen, then the keyboard backlight turns off. I then have to hold the power button down for a few seconds then press the button again for the laptop to boot normally. I've tried going through the threads that explain what each beep means. This beep does not fit into any of the listed beeps.  edit: I'd just like to add this tends to occur when the laptop is booted from battery only. If it's plugged in the issue doesn't seem to occur, at least for now.

Am I reading that right?https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/solutions/pd029622#Ultra%20Docking?If so, this is somewhat disappointing - getting a brand new machine and dock only to discover that it can't even run two displays at full refresh and resolution. Hello,I recently picked up a 6th gen X1 Carbon and have been having intermittent issues with a second monitor connected via the USB-C port.I currently have two displays set up, both Acer 20" with DVI and VGA female ports. One monitor is connected via HDMI out to DVI in and the second via the USB-C out to converter (VGA in) and then out to monitor VGA. Most of the time this works fine and I've been able to set up to get full HD on each. Intermittently though the right monitor (USB-C>VGA>VGA) loses signal prompted by moving some application (eg, FF browser, VLC) to the second monitor, but this doesn't happen with all applications nor even given applications each time. As this only happens when prompted by moving an application I'm guessing this is some driver/hardware quirk.I tried a Google search as well as pouring over the forum but didn't turn up much. Are there known issues with dual displays on the X1C6 and/or any known remedies? Also, are there generally preferred out ports people use to connect dual external monitors? HDMI seemed like the natural first choice but I'm not sure if there's a preference otherwise from the bevy of USB ports.Regards,Chris

TL;DR: Bought a new ($2K+) X1 Yoga 3rd Gen which tooks weeks to arrive.Laptop had a defective screen, sent it back for repairs.Haven't been able to get a straight answer on when I'm getting my laptop back - which is probably another several weeks from now.So here's the story:I ordered the new X1 Yoga 3 at the top of April. It took weeks for it to arrive (much later than guaranteed). A small token refund was promised -- which I still have not received. When I finally received the laptop, the HDR screen was defective. (Did all the software-based tweaks, it was clearly a hardwarde defect.)Shipped it back ASAP to have it fixed. The promised turnaround was 6 business days. It has now been 10 days and there's been absolutely no updates on an estimated time of arrival. I contacted support - which bounced me from place to place until they told me to contact the depot.I tried to call the depot (which took me 2 days worth of calls to get someone) - and STILL got the runaround. The person on the other end literally told me she had no idea when the laptop would be ready - "it could be a week, or two weeks, or longer than that."I could purchase a brand new laptop today and get it faster than this new, defective machine! This is absurd. Especially since this is a top-of-the-line laptop which came defective. And yet -- No compensation. No ETA. No replacements. Worst customer support.

I have the X1Y3 20LD001HUS  and battery life is horrific.  Including in sleep, battery drops way too quick compared to X1Y1 and X1Y2 which I have.  Setting display brightness to less than half, just doing browsing and email, no video/audio or heavy processing (and always on usb id disabled), I lost at least 25% battery in an hour.  I've noticed the same with my T480s.  I've had numerous other models (T460s, T440s, T450s, T540p, etc.) and battery life in standby and moderate use was pretty good but these new ones I'm disappointed with.  Also the fingerprint reader is more problematic with the T480s and X1Y3 compared to previous gens.  The "can't read fingerprint" rate is much higher on the new models in my experience.  I keep my drivers updated on all models as well.  And always disable "always on usb" so that's not an issue.  I do prefer Chrome, but I've observed the same power loss when going to standby with no apps left open (and chrome/firefox background disabled).  Anyone figure this out?

I've already small scratches, that are barely visible, on my screen. This is from using the pen only. With time, it should collect a lot more scratches and I wonder if the anti-glare coating will be removable, if I want to, in the future? There is obviously a soft layer on the gorilla glass screen on X1Y3 and it is prone to tiny scratches, even from the included pen.

A:Is the anti-glare coating removable on X1Y3?

Hi,

Just curious which screen do you have?  The HDR?  The WQHD? Or ?

I open my computer today and to my surprise I find the display flickering with a glitched image whenever I move the cursor around with the trackpad. Here is a video of what I'm seeing. I received this computer less than a week ago (4/16/18) and I am still babying it more than I would my primary laptop so I am surprised to see this kind of issue so quickly. It went away after a reboot but the glitches persisted through the shut down process. My drivers are all up to date and I have no idea where else this came from. Has anyone else had this issue or know where it stems from.

Hey Forum, Netflix refuses to recognize my external monitor as 4k capable. The 4K monitor is connected via the displayport on a Thunderbolt 3 dock that's connected to my X1Y3. The same monitor was recognized as 4K capable when it's connected to my desktop. Anything I need to change to make streaming 4K possible? Thanks a lot for your help! Jack

Hi there everyone, Does anyone here have a comparison of the battery life for the 3 different screen options for the US launched yoga models?  I'm just trying to figure out what the battery life hit is like between the screen options, but my google-fu is failing me. Thanks!

Everything seems to be running fine.  Temps between 50 and 70 C, both standalone and docked to TB3 Dock.  Anything in 1.25 that would suggest I should update? Thanks,

Hi there, i recently bought a new X1C6 with i7 8550. I wanted to use it for university and as a midrange gaming station (egpu) at home. But my plans started to fail as i got fps drops in almost all games. I did some information gathering and saw the following: At first the CPU starts to boost to pl2 (29W) for 30s or so. After that it drops the TDP to 23W (thats pl1). After a while i can see in hwinfo64 that the pl1 slowly starts to drop to 13W without any reason! My temps are pretty pretty good even at 29W it barely touches 90C and at 23W it hovers between 70 and 75C.Is this normal behavior of U-CPUs?Can i do something to prevent dropping?

Gefore X280 .
Sli fit, one of the most talked about video cards now adays. Might pick one up myself. Anyone have one of these bad boys? could i know how great / poor they run?

A:Geforce X280

yeah the GTX 280 is the top (single GPU) option out now, and its blisteringly fast, however at its high price people are looking at the ATi 4870, its a much cheaper option that is almost as fast. I dont have either myself, but you need to make sure the rest of the computer can keep up, if it can those cards are incredibly fast.

Hi I'm toying with getting an X280 to replace my 5 year old MacBook Pro. A small form factor is important to me these days as I make music when I'm out and about, but when I am using it at home I'd also like to be able to use it with an external GPU (the Razer Core X for example) to do some low end graphics work, and occasionally play some games of course. Does anyone know if the X280 has the ability to run external graphics via the Thunderbolt 3 port? It's not necessarily a deal breaker for me, the kind of graphics work I want to do is very low-res, low-poly stuff, and maybe the internal graphics will handle this just fine. It would just be good to know going forward - I called tech support and they gave me a vague yes, based on the X280 having Thunderbolt 3. Any information/experiences with this would be greatly appreciated! Thanks

So I have read other topics regarding other models, but this one is in particular in relation to my new work laptop an X280.The fan is ridiculously noisy. When I log into my windows account, a simple webpage refresh causes the fan the go overdrive and gets really noisy. Noisier than any other laptop I've had in the last 10 years. Way noisier than my previous X260. It gets rather distracting. I get that when you are doing something CPU intensive the fans need to kick in, but loading a webpage with 20% CPU usage should not be one of those situations. Even more so when the computers is not that hot anyways. I have tried setting hte thermal power settings to "balanced" while on AC power in the BIOS but it seems that it had very little effect. Is this a known issue? Is lenovo going to do anything about it?
