All Windows 7 host are pinging to 127.0.0.1.home when host name is used

Q: All Windows 7 host are pinging to 127.0.0.1.home when host name is used

I have a local area network of four Windows 7 PCs. The PCs are named Term1, Term2, Term3 and Term4.

Term1 is the server PC.

When I map to Term1 from the other Terms(2,3 and 4) I always used the command:
Net use F: \\Term1\c /user:Admin 1234

This worked fine before; now it suddenly refuses to connect this way ? I have to replace Term1 with the actual IP address of Term1 for it to work.

I
have tried the following Admin CMD commands:

netsh
int ip reset
ipconfig
/flushdns

All of these commands make no difference; I just can't connect using the server name (Term1).

What I strangely noticed is that from any of the terminals connected to Term1 (using the IP address); if I use, for example, ping Term1,
I get an address return of 127.0.0.1.home;
this address of 127.0.0.1.home will
display if I ping to Term2, Term3 or Term4.

I cannot find any solution on the web for this strange problem.

Preferred Solution: All Windows 7 host are pinging to 127.0.0.1.home when host name is used

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Evening everyone,

I'm having issues trying to connect my computer to the internet. Originally the issue was that the Ethernet cable doesn't have a valid IP configuration. I then proceed to use Command Prompt to run <netsh winsock reset> and <netsh int ip reset>. The second command wasn't working correctly so I had to go into the registry to allow the command to work. Here's a general list of things I've done.Diabled and enabled the adapter
Swapped ethernet cables
Tried different ports on router
Check to see if DHCP was enabled
Updated adapter drivers
Disabled all anti-virus and firewalls in safe mode to see if I can ping localhost

Here's where it gets interesting, I can't ping the local host. It gives me a "General Failure" comment. Now, I've gone ahead and set up a static IP address for my computer using Google's DNS server (8.8.8.8) but I still can't access the internet and regardless of what I do I can't ping the local host.

Window's diagnostic for my ethernet adapter is that it works but the DNS isn't working.
Any and all help would be appreciated.

I went to this site MVP site and saw the big list of sites to add to the host files. They said to just unzip it to the host files, well I couldn't figure out how to do that (I know I feel dumb) antway so they had the text form there so I just highlighted and then copied and pasted the list which was quite large about 194 Kb, I pasted it into my host files starting under the first entry in mine. is that ok? or did I screw up by doing it that way? And then I read something about they had to be in capital letters or something of that nature, these weren't capitals is it all right the way I did it? here is the site I got them from

I'm running Windows 7 Pro 64-bit, and have installed the Virtual XP mode.  A long time ago Virtual XP was fully running, with access to host resources (drives etc).  But my system underwent some software changes, and then Virtual XP could no longer
access the host resources.  After trying (unsuccessfully) all the tricks found on several forums, I decided to uninstall then reinstall Virtual XP, which I have just done.  But I still can't access host drives.  Here's how Virtual XP is set
up:
Workgroup name is set to the same as my host (confirmed in 'My Computer'/Properties/Name);
Networking 'Adapter 1' set to my host's NIC;  I have assigned a fixed IP address to the Virtual XP (this has worked previously; all devices on my Win7 network have fixed addresses, for good reason).

Integration Features has ticks in the boxes for those host drives I want to access from VXP.
I can successfully ping the host, via name or IP address;  I can successfully ping web sites by name (e.g. 'yahoo.com').  But when I open Windows Explorer and open the 'My Network Places' tree, it opens down to the name of my host workgroup, but
when I click on that workgroup name, after several seconds it pops up an error box saying: "<workgroupname> is not accessible.  You might not have permission to use this network resource.  <blah blah>.  The service has not been
started."
Any suggestions on how to get access to my host... Read more

I am using Windows XP home edition.

I posted this in the wrong forum, a few days ago: and was advised to post it here,
with a new hjt log. They did say that I had more serious problems than just my host file needing to be restored. They also said that there didn't seem to be a firewall. How can I find out if I'm using Window's firewall?

Arovax Shield popped up a message: "Warning: Your Windows host file was hijacked. It is recommended to restore host file."

1. Now I can't use my anti-virus program, because it stalls (freezes) before it finishes.

2. I can't use Panda or any other on-line scanner, because it too freezes before it can
finish.

3. I can't shutdown my computer - not even cold boot! I have to completely unplug it!

4. I can't do a system restore, to a previous date. (I've tried several previous dates).

I have no idea how to restore the host file, and I have no idea how it was hijacked.

Here is my new HJT log: (I hope it will be of some help)

Try deleting or renaming the Hosts file.
It will be recreated, so no harm to try.
It's at:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc
It's named "HOSTS- no extension.
You can open this file with Notepad of you're curious enough to see what it says.

I need help, not 30 lashes with a wet noodle. I feel stupid enough already.

I think I have a failed uninstall of Norton Internet Securities 2004 and I may not have completely removed MSN 9.0 either. The machine was handed down to me from my fifteen year old daughter, who feels that it has "a bunch of Trojans".

It is a Presario S5000NX running WinXP SP2. It has two XP clients, one of which can access the internet and be seen (usually) by other machines. The 95 client can be seen by all machines but cannot see any of them. The samba (Mandrake 10.1) client can't be seen but can (usually) see the host, 95 client, and one XP client, and can access the internet. The other XP client cannot be seen or go online, but can (usually) access files from (some of) the other computers. The samba client double-boots in Win2000 and can then access the host, 95 client, and accessible XP client, but cannot be seen. The 95 client cannot access the internet.

This ethernet LAN connectivity is subject to change without notice or apparent reason.

It is currently running AVG free and Sygate free; whenever I try to install stronger security software, I lose network connectivity (which is hardly perfect in the first place) and have to run an XP system restore.

I can also scan across the network with NOD32 on a client computer. Neither it nor AVG nor Ad-Aware nor Spybot turn anything up.

Let's start with a hijackthis log:

A friend runs a web site with health information. On it he has an expanding number of mp3s (about an hour each) which are each fairly large. They are mp3s hour long conversations. He claims that he is running out of space, that there are size limitations.

I'm not sure if this a web hosting limit. Or a bandwidth issue when multiple members stream the mp3s at the same time.

I'm guessing that a 1+ hour audio is fairly large and that 30+ of them take up quite a lot of space for a normal web site.

would he be better to run his site from a home server with a dedicated PC? Or does he just need to find a better web host?

I'm not tech savy so might not be asking this the correct way, but bottom line is he is running into issues with is expanding library of audio files.

thanks,

pete

it could be both - storage and bandwidth are limited on a lot of hosts

But often the space is quite large 100GB on the basic sites and quite a few hosts offer unlimited bandwidth - so your freind needs to tell us the specifications for is host
what the storage he has
and
what bandwidth he is allowed

for example (not a recommendation) godaddy and 1to1 all offer 100GB storage and unlimited bandwidth on the basic web hosting services

would he be better to run his site from a home server with a dedicated PC?Click to expand...

No,
A) the chances are the ISP would not allow
B) the upload speed from a domestic service is quite low - remember when someone downloads from a website - they are also the site is uploading to you

Or does he just need to find a better web host? Click to expand...

Yes,

Any way to add Remote Desktop (host) to W7 home?
I upgraded to home premium and now found that I can not remote desktop TO this pc
Obviously I could upgrade from home to PRO but didn't know if I can just "add" RDP to this home PC at all
I realize there are 3rd party software vendors I can use (think I saw VNC, mesh, go2mtg, etc)
Any thoughts, suggestions?

A:Any way to add Remote Desktop (host) to W7 home?

Hi there
NO -- this is a BIG disappointment to zillions of people who get computers loaded with W7 Home from stores.

It's almost a universal requirement these days that people want to access HOME computers from the Internet / Work etc etc.

There are "3rd party options" like "Logmein" etc but some work places now block these sites and ports and aren't in any case a true alternative for RDP.

There were "get arounds" in Windows XP HOME (XP PRO always allowed RDP as a Server rather than a client) but they seemed to have locked down W7 a bit better now.

I'm sure allowing RDP in W7 Home wouldn't have been a big deal for MS -- it's certainly IMO needed.

For Linux VNC is a good solution -- whether you could use this on Windows as a server I don't know.

Cheers
jimbo

I have a host-host VPN set up between a Cisco SR520 router and a PIX 515E. Connection at my end is AT&T DSL, static IP, netopia DSL modem. Don't know the service at the other end, but I do know it is a web hosting company.

I can ping the designated host computer at the other end via the VPN tunnel. They cannot reliably ping my end. If I have ping -t running to the other end, a ping coming my way works. Otherwise, not. The last two Cisco techs I have spoken with have no clue (and they have logged into both routers to examine the configuration).

Early on, we had a 2Wire DSL modem. AT&T acknowledged that its SPI firewall can be problematic. They recommended the netopia as being more transparent. Its firewall has been totally disabled.

Suggestions?

A:Host - Host VPN not symetric

When you can't ping through the tunnel, how long is it after the last session through the tunnel? Did you do a show crypto isakmp sa to see if the tunnel is still up? Depending on the settings of the keep alives and hellos over the tunnel, the tunnel could have been brought down due to inactivity. But normally, the tunnel should just re-establish itself on the next keep alive/hello interval. If the tunnel is down, it will take a minute or so before traffic moves across the tunnel again due to the overhead of the tunnel being brought up.

What is your exact network layout? Are you doing a remote VPN configuration or a LAN to LAN (site to site) configuration where the VPN tunnel is between the SR520 and the 515E. The above assumes you are doing a LAN to LAN tunnel. Also, is the DSL modem you have bridged or still operating as a router. If it is still operating as a router, you should turn the modem into a pure modem and not a modem/router.

Hello.
I've been riddled with a problem concerning rundll32.exe for a while now. I just recently scanned my computer and there was a worm in it which is quarantined, but some of the files on my external hard drive are not opening. It seems the worm has also infected my external hard drives, and whenever I try to open one it instead shows a shortcut redirecting me to rundll32.exe, and when I double-click on it it says that the 'specified module could not found'.
I googled it a bit and found rundll32 could also be a virus or a worm, and then I scanned my disk C, and it showed 4 rundll32 files. Usually only one or two are needed, aren't they? They are as follows:

1)rundll32.exe.mui - in Windows\System32\en-US
2)rundll32.exe.mui - in some winsxs folder
3)rundll32.exe - in system32 folder
4)rundll32.exe - in the same winsxs folder.

The first two are MUI files and the bottom two are Windows applications.
Are these really genuine windows processes? I'm not really experienced in these matters, and the bottom two files also showed a malicious software warning before. If one of them is really a worm, is there any way to delete it? I've got an antivirus installed but on scanning it comes up with nothing.
And yes, the HijackThis application is not detecting the rundll32 files saying that it does not have access to the host processes.
Thanks for reading, any help will be greatly appreciated.

I am doing some work for an insurance company that does all their database work with an old DOS-based program, which they currently run within Windows 98 on a really, really old IBM PC. The software is contained all within it's own folder so moving it from computer to computer should only require copying this one folder with all the contents to another machine. But doing this, and trying to run it in a command prompt on a Windows XP computer causes the program to spit out a bunch of runtime errors and crash. I am thinking this is going to require some form of either emulation or virtualization to pull off.

The other snag about this is that they must be able to print from this old DOS program, which currently uses a parallel port/Centronics cable to send plain text to the printer. No fancy drivers in use; just plain text. Newer printers use only USB so I was hoping to perhaps find some kind of software that could trick the program into thinking there is a parallel port when it's really just some sort of compatibility layer that puts the job into Windows print spooler. Anything like that out there?

Thanks for all the help anyone can provide in advanced!

A:Looking for a way to host an old version of DOS within Windows

For the printing problem a USB to parallel cable and the "net use" command will work. Search the DOS/PDA/Other forum under Operating Systems for a post by JohnWill for details. I'm not at the machine I set up that way and don't recall all of the details.

I'm not sure where to post this, because I'm not sure if it is an XP issue, a Norton issue, or something unrelated. I'm on a Dell Dimension E310, running Windows XP, SP2. On 12/29/07, I downloaded updates for Adobe Reader 8.1 and also for Java, neither of which should have caused a problem. However, the very next day, all of a sudden I noticed that I couldn't launch Norton 360, found I could no longer do things like download Spybot updates (I get "Error retrieving update info file Socket error #10061 Connection refused"), cannot connect to iTunes, connection refused from my employer's Citrix server, etc. I removed both of the updates that were applied on 12/29 - no change. In troubleshooting, the only thing I can find so far is that Com host is stopped. When I try to start it, I get the msg "Could not start the com host service on local computer. Error 0x8000ffff: Catastrophic failure." Any suggestions on other things I can look at would be appreciated! Here's a Hijackthis log, in case that will help:

For anyone else who may have this same problem, I finally resolved it by removing Norton 360, and reloading it. Apparently something had become corrupt in Norton 360 itself. When I reloaded the app, everything worked fine and the problem hasn't recurred. If you are like me, and downloaded 360 (i.e. you have no program disks), you can go to the Symantec website and get your original information, which will allow you to download again. (But it was a bit of a pain - I don't think I'll purchase things like that via download anymore. I want the disks.)

Hello,

I am having a very irritating problem with my Desktop computer.. Here is what I am trying to accomplish:

I am trying to set up a VPN on my Desktop computer (HOST) so that I can connect to it from my school with my laptop (CLIENT). At one point it was working, but now every time I try to connect I get "Error 720: A connection to the remote computer could not be established. You might need to change the network settings for this connection."

I know the issue is NOT my laptop, because I can connect to another VPN that I currently have running in place of the one at home (One obvious reason I'd like the home VPN is that my current one is in Sweden...)

I also have little reason to believe that my network settings are wrong, because I have the Host computer set as DMZ on my Linksys WRT160N Router and have forwarded the PPTP Port to it as well (Just in case.)

I've gone as far as reformatting my Desktop computer and doing NOTHING but installing Network Adapter drivers and an antivirus, and then setting up the VPN and it STILL doesn't work... this is very frustrating.

My Desktops spec's are:

Windows 7 Professional
Intel DP55KG Motherboard w/ integrated Gigabit LAN

My Laptop specs are:

Windows 7 Home Premium
ASUS G51Jx-A1 w/ Atheros 8295 Mini Wifi Adapter.

I've trialed this with other machines trying to connect to the Host computer with the same result of "Error 720:"... It will connect, verify the username and password, and this error shows up when... Read more

Hello,

I'm writing some scripts in WSH and VBScript however I wanted to program an interface to go with them. I have Visual Studio 2008 and created a form and made all the buttons and programmed a lot of functions in VB. Now it has come to do the stuff that requires WSH and it would appear VB cannot do this, just VBScript..

Is there anyway of integrating VBScript with VB, or is ther anyway of programming interfaces in VBScript or are there any ways of programming WSH using VB.

Any help appreciated.

A:Windows Script host

One of the simpler thoughts is to run the script using
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/microsoft.visualbasic.interaction.shell(VS.80).aspx
see the example where they launch notepad.
You will need to use cscript (wscript?) on the command line invoke the script.
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/xazzc41b(VS.85).aspx
It's tough to say more w/o knowing what you are doing though. My guess is that it can be done in vb rather than using a script.

This link might give a better overview of how to command line run a script using cscript or wscript

Hi,
About a week ago i started having this error:

(The only thing that isn't understandable in this picture is the error because it is in french, so here is the translation for it : " Error:The system cannot locate the resource specified.")

It started to get really annoying as it pops up everytime i start up my pc, so i googled the error this morning, i found out that those vbe files in that directory are scripts that create a trojan in your computer.I navigated to the directory but i couldn't find the file "45A7AA.vbe".

I have format my PC , some hours ago but i'm really concerned about my data.
I think that the script was never executed because the file is not in that directory, but i really would like to know if it was executed to know if the hacker has had access to my info.

Thanks.

How do I do this? I do not my window's hostname seen on a network.
Say if you do tracert 10.10.10.3 it will reveal the host name, on Linux this is extremely easy to accomplish.

I already tried:

Net config server /hidden:yes
Also how do I change the hostname? I can change my computer name, but how do I change the hostname?

Like when I changed the name, restart, and tracert the ip it is still the same hostname, how do I change that? And how has this never been properly answered before?
NM to last part of question: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/...windows-7.aspx

A:Hide windows host name

The hostname is the Full Computer name as far as I know.

Type hostname in a Command Prompt window to see it. You need to reboot after changing it or maybe a logoff/logon will work.

Have you recently removed some viruses/malware from your system? If so, are you sure that your system is clean? If not, I'd suggest posting over in the "Am I Infected" forum located here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/f/103/am-i-infected-what-do-i-do/Once you're sure that you're clean we should be able to remove the message without any issues (as a caveat, if the system isn't clean - this could cause the virus to mutate and hide. Making it much, much more difficult to remove).

Hi there,

I've done a Google search and saw quite a few threads similar to mine, unfortunately none of the suggested solutions seemed to work for me, so I wonder if anyone can help.

I have a Windows XP Lenovo laptop that I suspect had some malware which has since been removed (ran various virus and malware killer scans and all come up empty).

However, while the laptop connects to the modem/router (via Ethernet, disabled wireless to avoid confusion) it doesn't seem to connect to the internet via any browsers (Chrome, IE etc).

Windows Firewall is disabled, no other firewall exists. Anti Virus is also disabled just to clear the path.

I can ping the router/modem by IP, I can ping other PC's on the home network by IP and name all successfully, I can also ping localhost successfully, but whenever I try to ping say www.yahoo.com it gives me the "ping request could not find host www.yahoo.com. Please check the name and try again". Pinging Yahoo's IP address however does work and gets responses.

I checked the host file name and it is empty apart from the "127.0.0.1 localhost" line.

I tried running some winsock fixing tools as well, but no luck. Still no internet connection.

If I type the IP address of my modem/router into a browser window I get the modem/router console, so connectivity between modem/router and the laptop is there, just not to the internet as such.

My "Ipconfig /all" output is as follows:

A:change in windows host

We do not help with business computers by policy, for legal reasons.
If your laptop is for personal use only, then you should not have Symantec Endpoint on there.
Symantec Endpoint is designed for business enterprise use under long term contract, with maintenance to be provided by the business' Information Technology staff.
It is NOT designed for home use, and, by the way, can be extremely difficult to remove.

Please tell me your situation, and what you would like to do.

Dell Inspiron N5010, Upgrade from 7 to Win 8.1 x 64, 6 GB ram

Because I have had a heating issue and a fan running more, I looked at my task manager and found that "host process for Windows tasks" was using the highest cpu and at times the only cpu usage.

Also, I have two of those terms "host process for Windows tasks"in task manager but only one in my desktop.
So I have 3 questions;
1- does this process running higher than any other tell you anything?
2- why is one of the duplicate entries the only one consuming resources of all the entries?
3- why are there 2 similar entries in the laptop and only one in the desktop?

Thank you

Hi, have a computer that whenever try to login to a web-based application, a window appears asking whether want to allow the Windows Host Process (rundll32) to be run with the application (I'm not sure the exact wording). There is a checkbox to select not to show this message again, but checking it doesn't seem to do anything, cause the window always comes back. This is a Windows 7 machine.

Any suggestion on how to get rid of this? It just started like a week ago.

Thanks,

I see from the posts here many cases where people get some malicious script from the web, PC autoconnecting at unwanted sites, enforced changes of the IE's start up page
continuous pop-ups....
In an older post of mine Hewee and Rollin'Rog told me that by uninstalling or temporary disabling Windows Scripting Host will increase security when surfing the
web (I made it with Symantec's Noscript.exe,no problems until now,I have the option to reenable it whenever I want).
I just wonder maybe this is the most sound advice in all these cases. Is it possible to have all these problems when you have WSH disabled ?

A:Windows Scripting Host disabled !

I bet Rollin'Rog knows alot more about it then I do.
But my old PC with windows 95 never even had Windows Scripting Host. Just last October I installed I.E. 5.2 and it installed the Windows Scripting Host and I used the Symantec's Noscript.exe.
On my new PC with 98SE the Windows Scripting Host I uninstalled by going tru the add/remove, windows setup.
I have never had any trouble and I have only got a virus twice on my PC and it was stopped by Norton AV. I then I would of been in more trouble the one time if I had the Windows Scripting Host installed.

So I have had no trouble with it and it has saved my butt by not having Windows Scripting Host installed.

Now I use Netscape 4.70 online all the time and use I.E. only when I have to. So if I.E. wants to have the Windows Scripting Host to use and makes trouble I don't know but I don't think so.
