Q: 'Restart' better than turn off and turn back on?

If I turn the laptop off and back on again, like next morning etc the dongle doesn't connect to the internet, but if i then restart it, the dongle connects.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello Microsoft team,
We need for an application to unplug and replug usb3 - not physically but with a program.
We checked a lot on the internet but did not find answer how to do it in windows 8.1 pro (in c++).
We know that hibernation creates something alike, but how can we only turn down the power of usb3 and return the power back on back via program (in c++).
Thank you for your help.

Running Windows Vista Ultimate.

Display turns off after about fifteen minutes regardless of whether I am actively using the computer or not. The only way to turn the display back on is to close and then open the lid. This disconnets me from AOL, so I have to sign back on again, and if I was emailing, I might lose my current email.

Under Power Options, I have 'Turn off the display' set to Never for both On Battery and Plugged in. Under 'Put the computer to sleep' I have both On battery and Plugged in set to never. Nonetheless, the display still shuts off while I am working.

What do I need to do to prevent the display from turning off at odd intervals?

So I have already tried the solutions such as boot up the pc and press shift and such to get a menu and then download somthing on a usb and get into an administrator account. The Administration account I can at least log onto as it's not password protected but I still can't turn on Wi-Fi which basically defeats my whole purpose of using the computer as I use it for gaming. So regarding me not being able to log into my actual account, I've tried resetting my password multiple times without success. I think it's due to the fact that I am not able to connect to any Wi-Fi spots (which I assume is because of safe mode which I can't turn off for some reason) And that brings me to my next point, of I can't connect to Wi-Fi die to safe mode. I have tried to turn off safe mode in the settings but when I press the button for it to turn off it slides back over to the on side. Please let me know if you have any other solutions that I have not tried yet, Thanks !

If I unset "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" on the Power Management tab of my USB Root Hub properties, then when I attempt to restart my computer from the Start Menu, Windows shuts down but the computer itself keeps running,
i.e. the power light stays lit and the fan continues to run. In order to actually shutdown, I have to press the power button for a few seconds. Upon reboot, there is no indication of a failed shutdown from Windows. However, I am able to shutdown from the Start
Menu without problem.
Is this really the intent of not allowing the computer to turn off a device connected to a USB port, i.e. you can shutdown but you can't restart? Seems a bit arbitrary to me.

Once again the computer impaired one comes to the table of knowledge...

I shut down my PC, fans stop, lights go out. About 6-8 mins later it starts up again, been doing this for four days now. I ran a virus scan which came out clean. The only way to keep it turned off is to unplug it. The only tinkering I've done lately is to try to open a port on my router (which I didn't get done, forgot password and reset button doesn't work). I don't think my PC is set to hibernate, I have never used that feature.

Is there something I should check?

I have a Dell desktop w/ windows xp home. When I try to restart, It gets to a blue windows screen that says bios revision 1.1.2 and the bar freezes half way across, nothing will get out of it. I have to turn off the Cpu and then start the whole machine again, It will work then. Can't create a new restore point, bacause it automatically "restarts" which of course doesn't work. HELP

A:Can't restart, have to turn off at cpu and start.

System restore points won't help you here because the problem is not at operating system level. There seems to be an issue when the computer is booting up which is at a lower level.

Firstly, try getting into the BIOS, usually by pressing Delete or F2 just before it freezes (it might say on the screen which key to press to enter Setup). Then, see if there is an option to restore factory defaults or similiar and then press F10 and enter to save changes.

Let me know how you get on and if it doesn't work, I might have to guide you through some more advanced solutions.

This has now happened five or six times. I was using Rabb.it, a site similar to Skype when it first happened. I had not had my webcam on but did have my mic on. The other person was using both her mic and webcam. It seems to have only happened whenever I was using this site, but only on this lap top. My desktop at home doesn't have this issue with Rabb.it, and neither did my  prior lap top, so I believe it is possibly caused by videocalling alone. The first thing I notice is that I become dissconnected from her, and then I will be informed that I'm no longer connected to the internet. Whenever I click the Internet Access icon on the bottom right side of the screen it will load for awhile, then say, "no Networks available" when I know for a fact that there are networks available.  The "Wi-Fi" option next to "Airplane Mode" also disappears. When I try to click on "Network settings" there is no Wi-Fi options and it opens up on VPN options, which I do not use VPN. Sometimes I found that it will not allow me to click on anything in the Start menu, or the "Ask me anything" menu. I have to click ctrl, alt and delete to be able to get the options of shutting down, restarting, or sleeping. Whenever I press "Sleep", it will not let me go back to anything and the screen stays black. Whenever I choose "Restart", the screen goes black and even after hours, nothing happens or changes, and the computer does not turn off. And when I choose  "Shut Down", the screen stays b... Hi all,

I just checked through the search forum to see if anyone had a similar issue but could not find.

I recently installed Windows 7 (32-bit) onto my Gen 3 Dell XPS desktop. Installation was okay and everytime the computer restarted (during install) I had to manually shut it off and turn on again to continue the installation. I'm currently using Windows 7 and it seems like everything is working (except my sound, but that's another issue).

The problem is whenever I restart the computer it gets stuck on the Dell startup screen (Dell logo with the 'loading' grey bar). Again, I manually turn it off and then turn on again and it works fine. Does anyone know why that happens? If anyone can help me any bit or link me in the right direction I would greatly appreciate it.

With thanks,

A:Can shutdown/turn on fine; but cannot restart

Hi Ed. . .

A few items to do that may yield some clues -

1. Reset power options to default settings -
START | type power | select "Power Options"

2. Enable boot logging via msconfig -
START | msconfig | select "Boot" tab | check box "Boot Log" | Apply | OK
--> boot log will be in c:\windows\ntbtlog.txt starting with next boot-up. Please get it and attach to post

3. System Info - Event Logs, msinfo32, registry dumps, PERFMON Health Report, systeminfo.exe, etc... The fastest way to gather all - the BSOD System Information gathering batch script -

--> BSOD Posting Instructions

Attach the zipped output folder + the boot log to next post.

I have a Dell Inspiron 1420 that runs Vista Home Premium. Whenever I update anything that requires a restart I have to manually shut it down first, then turn the laptop on again. I think this is the reason it will not properly install SP1. I have downloaded it numerous times. It says it the installation was "successfull" but then it shows up again on my windows update and it never shows up on my computer's "System Properties" as running SP1. I have reinstalled Vista numerous times as well and get the same results so the version of Vista that I currently run is not up to date. Can't even install SP1. Please help!!!!

And than a bit later when i tried to go on the internet...the page wouldnt load so i tried to close it...and did that a few times...nothing...tried task manager & that program didnt load at all..it showed the icon in taskbar..but thats it...so i decided to click on turn computer off...and when it said...saving your settings...it didnt shut off...it was same as restart..it was like it was stuck there..so i had to turn computer off manually again!

It possible for you to run any programs? If so, try Process Explorer, it may point to what is using up the CPU. I use a program called Process Lasso to catch software that may use 100% of the CPU and lock up. You can check it out here: http://www.bitsum.com/prolasso.php

At this point, we have to deduce what it isn't.

Desktop computer (made to order) running Win XP home (SP3) and suddenly I cannot go 'Start'>'Turn Off Computer'> 'Standby' or 'Restart'. The keyboard 'Sleep' button won't work either although it would beforehand.
'Standby' simply hangs at "saving your settings" (first time it stayed there for 1/2 hour, nothing happened so I turned of the power) , 'Restart' goes right through the process but doesn't start back up. The light on the start button remains on but, after either 'Standby'  or 'Restart', I have to switch power off/on at the wall outlet, then press the computer start button to go again.
'Turn Off' works as it should .
This all happened after I re-installed a program that hadn't worked properly since it was first installed, about 3 years ago. Its not a prog that can be uninstalled as it hooks itself into another program in order to work and doesn't show up in the installed list.
I'm hoping there is a 'fix' for the problem, rather than requiring reinstall, as the computer came with a preloaded O/S and no backup disc. The guy who made the comp. gave me an XP disc after I complained but I don't know if it's a genuine disc or not and I'm not game to try it.

Hello. I'm new on this site so hi to everyone and I hope you can help. I've seen a few posts along these lines but not exactly the same so -

Got a new PC from Evesham a couple of weeks ago - Core Duo E6400 / 2GB RAM . Worked fine but was supposed to have 2 x 200GB HD but only one fitted.
Evesham sent engineer with new drive on Tuesday.
But he couldn't physically installl the drive as intended as he wasn't given a bracket (the front panel USB cables inhibit installing it horizontally in the cage below fitted HD).
It was agreed that he would set the disk up on the system and arrange for the bracket and fixings to be sent out for me to fit myself.
Meanwhile the drive sits on the worksurface at the side of the case ( side panel is removed - who mentioned EMC ? ).
Engineer left disk to format - which it did . No apparent problem and PC used as normal.

But later I needed to Restart the PC when I was setting up some audio I/O.
The PC shut down but did not restart.
Testing / Observation since shows that it won't run successfully from Restart or if even I Turn Off then power back on within a short time ( I'm talking a minute or more - plenty of time for PSU to discharge etc.)
It always starts up but will shut off completely after a variable period - sometimes it will get through to showing desktop icons and it appears to be fine but then turns off.
When I say turn off I mean the power just goes off - fans ( case and processor / graphics ) s... Read more

A:PC shuts off after recent turn off / restart

It shouldnt make a difference if the second drive is attached or not, so long as you still have one hdd attached with an os. Theoretically speaking it is unlikely that the drive is causing this problem, with hdd faults you usually find that the drive simply will not be detected, or the pc will freeze / display read-write errors. However I am experiencing similar issues myself and havnt been able to completely rule out the drive as of yet.

A:Turn off and restart the system failure

Before you attempt anything either backup or save important documents, etc. to a removable drive/disc.

Could you give some more information, such as how you are trying to restart/shutdown? Have you run Malwarebytes and/or a virus scanner? Have you recently installed updates? How long has this problem been going on (you can try System Restore back to a date before the problem started)? Can you manually shut the system down by holding down the Power button? If you can then I would assume you can restart it. Assuming it will manually shut down then I'd do the following:

Start > Run > chkdsk /F. Command prompt will ask you if you want to check the volume at your next startup. Type Y and then manually shut down your computer > restart. Depending on what you've got on your computer this could take quite a bit of time so only do this when you have the time available.

Some time ago, probably couple months ago I update my motherboard and ever since I have not been able to start my computer in one go. I have no knowledge of computers or how to fix them so I haven't been trying anything. the issue is when I turn my computer on it doesn't turn my monitor on or my mouse (the computer itself is running), so I need to hold the power button to turn it on and go into bios settings, select the drive I want to use to turn it on and only then it comes on. From the little knowledge, I have I'm more than positive I have the hard drive with the system used as a default drive to boot the PC up. I was also told that I could try to update my bios settings but I fear of it destroying my motherboard due to this issue, any help would be appreciated.

Last night, my computer turned off while I was using it. It wouldn't turn back on, and everything else on the surge protector was working fine. Since I've had problems with power supplies before, I turned the switch to the off position, removed the power cord, and let it cool off, in case it had overheated. When I tried to turn it back on, the power light and the LEDs on the inside blinked on and then back off. They were on for maybe a tenth of a second. During that time, there's no sound of my computer trying to turn on or anything, just the lights. Does anybody have any idea what this might be, or where to begin to troubleshoot??

btw, I know I mentioned LEDs, but I don't have any extensive mods, no overclocking, etc. Just pretty lights.

TIA for any help!!

I'm baffled.

Had to reinstall Windows XP. It appears there are issues with SP2 involving the video graphics card and the sound. Now I'm stuck. I thought that if I chose "do not use this device" under "Device usage" on the display adaptor tab, that it would pick the right adaptor.

Anyway, my screen went blank and I tried to reboot in safe mode and it sticks at mup.sys. I disabled mup and it now sticks at "nid" something or other.

I got the bright idea to use "Windows Narrator" to try and reenable the adaptor but I think the reinstall or the SP2 killed my sound.

Now I'm really stuck. Is there a way to reenable VGA adaptor from the command prompt in recovery mode?

Hi to anyone reading this (my first ever post, anywhere) & an upfront thank you to anyone that takes the time to help me out.

My problem is this- A friends HDD died the other week so I offered to try & fix it for him (not knowing it was the HDD at the time, he said it just wont boot). Long story short, retrieved what i could from drive, bought new (to us) HDD, went through the whole process , am sure you all know well, installation of wxp pro, all M/S updates inc sp3, FireFox browser with many addons/extensions all tweaked to preferred settings, many general programs like esset nod 32, Google toolbar/desktop, vlc media player, power point viewer, adobe, apple stuff, quick time, drive health, emule, rar, messenger, mbsa, silverlite, nvidia driver, office viewer & on & on so as you can guess the whole thing took me some time to do & as i consider myself new to the world of PCs i was pretty chuffed with myself,
NOTE: I have not yet put ANYTHING from old HDD onto this one, it was only a baby 20 gig drive & more than half of that was empty so it was a tiny quick job.
I called him to tell him the good news, all done & will be ready for him later that evening so thought id do a general clean up as to give it him back in top condition even though it was only about 5 days old but it had been through a fair bit of activity in that time so my plan was to do the following in this order-

1, run esset nod 32 deep virus check,
2, run wxp preinstalled ... Read more

The only way that you will be able to use a SP3 CD is if you slipstream the SP3 with your Windows? XP SP2-CD.

In the meantime, if you click canel, Windows? will ignore the fact that there are later versions of the files on thew computer and leave them.

Ok I have no idea what is going on with this computer and I am very very tired of trying to figure it out.

I've the following programs and have used them often: CCleaner, IOBIT (Advanced Care, Smart Defrag, etc), Microsoft Security Essentials, UnLocker, SuperAntiSpyware

I have the following browsers IE, Firefox, Chrome, Opera

When using a browser (pick one) it....."stalls" I guess is what you call it, it just won't go to a page, always looks like it's loading, etc. I close it and when I try to reopen it says that the browser is still running and can't open another. When browsing I also can not play games like on I-Am-Bored.com, I can't get drop down menus to work, etc. After this, I also can not get the computer to shut down or restart (have to press the power button) and occassionally it gives me a pop up error about NsAppShell:Event something.

Please help me solve this problem once and for all.

I have tried uninstalling browsers and reinstalling.

Thank you in advance!

Hi! I have tried turning it on and off with the power button, tried using the diagnostics tool via f12 on the Dell logo screen. I have read that by pressing f8, I will be able to enter the screen to reset the laptop back to an earlier time, however f8 doesn't seem to work. I have tried pressing it rapidly upon restarting, pressing it slowly, and holding it down multiple times and nothing happens, it just brings me to the same error screen. Any help would be much appreciated!

Save the report as an .nfo file, then zip up the .nfo file and upload/attach the .zip file with your next post.
Also, save a copy as a .txt file and include it also (it's much more difficult to read, but we have greater success in getting the info from it).

Hello, I recently got a Thinkpad P51(about a month ago). I was working on battery today and the laptop just turned off - no warning about low battery either. It won't turn on again. I tried the following- plugging in the AC power and use the power button to turn it on- Removing AC, battery and hold the power button for 30secs and plug them back in But the laptop won't turn back on. I don't see any lights(even the little red thinkpad LED doesn't blink) nor hear any beeps.  Can any one suggest a quick troubleshoot for this?  Thanks

I have a new PC with Windows 7 ultimate 64 and want to turn off the annoying pop up messages telling me 'I can back up' etc. I have no schedule in place , un-clicked in the Notification Area and in Action Centre.
Can anyone please tell me where else I must go to get rid of these messages.

A:Back up Advisory pop ups - how to turn off

Hello Walkage, and welcome to Seven Forums.

Did you turn off (uncheck) the Windows Backup message option in Action Center and click on OK like below?

Action Center - Change Message Settings

If so, then please post a screenshot showing the pop-up message to see if it may be for something else.

My pc runs just fine untill i try to play a game, then after 5-15 minutes the pc crashes as if it has lost power, and tries to turn itself back on only to crash again instantly. I have to wait for about 10 minutes before the pc will start again. I have an i5 4690k CPU @3.50 Ghz and a GTX 980, as well as 16 gigs of RAM and an MSI "overclocking" motherboard. My CPU temps have been quite high at times, up to ~80 ish degrees celsius, but the crash has also occured at ~65-70 which should be fine as far as i know.

Any tips are greatly appreciated.

Hi. I have a Epson Workforce WF-3640 printer. I was in the middle of printing out my son's term paper, when I heard it stop working. Noticed it was off. Tried to turn back on. Nothing. Check cord to make sure connected securely at back of printer and at outlet. Also check for a tripped breaker. And nothing. I just bought this brand new from Best Buy in February. Please help.

A:Printer won't turn back on

If the printer is getting any power I would try:

A different outlet.
A different power cord.
Checking to see if the printer is still under warranty with the manufacturer and/or Best Buy.

A:My cybershot won't turn back on

Sony camera problem.

This could be happening for several reasons. The camera could have a software /firmware fault, or it could be a problem with something preventing the lens from moving as it should.
But it's just as likely to be the Li-ion battery not holding a charge as it used to.
If you have a mains adapter, try that instead of the battery, see if it works then.
You may need to buy a new battery, as they don't last for more than a couple of years, especially with heavy use.
If you can get the screen on using the mains adapter, go into the menu and do a 'factory reset'. Take the memory stick out first.
All faults are repairable, but you would do well to get a quote first, as a new camera may be cheaper, (unfortunately).
The pictures on your memory stick are not affected by camera faults, as a rule, but if you have another one, try it, just in case there is a problem with the edge connector on it.

Hi guys!

New here, just put Windows 7 on my laptop on Sunday. I'm really liking it thus far.

One thing I noticed maybe just today. When the screen shuts off due to time or the lid being closed, it doesn't seem to want to turn back on. I can put into standby and bring it back out and it works just fine. But, I'd rather not have to do that all the time.

It's a Dell Inspiron E1505 with a ATI Radeon X1400 video card if that helps at all.

If you need more info, let me know. Thanks!

Hi daroga and welcome,

This tutorial from Brink will show you what the power option settings are and from where to access them.
Sometimes coming out of standby, etc doesn't work right. You can turn all of it off if you desire to.
