Q: Windows updates showing superseded updates as missing

I have a windows server 2008 R2 machine with ESU license, in which i have installed upto april month security rollup updates
but still it is showing updates KB3118401 and KB3123479 as missing on my system
But according to Microsoft catlog site these updates have been superseded multiple times by various rollup updates , and the latest one is the April month security rollup update (2020)
I'm confused how can a superseded update can be listed as missing in windows update,
any help is appreciated

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Up until March 2017 you provided an Excel spreadsheet with all the bulletins to date and their CVE and superseded information. Will this be provided going forward? The downloads could be found here:
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=36982 and the BulletinSearch.xlsx file was most useful.
The new format of the security bulletins are not as easy to follow. My clients are not very happy with it.

For the past day windows wants to install the same 4 updates over and over, I have windows update set to download and let me choose when to install.

I can't understand why I even need them, as I uninstalled net framework.

Notice how the update at 8:17 AM., KB2656368, is the same as one of the 4 updates installed at 7:47 PM.
Windows wants to install the same four kb files again.
How do I stop this?

A:Windows 7 updates same for updates every time it checks for updates

See if you can System Restore to before Net Framework 4 was installed and then Hide it when it is again offered in Updates.

But be aware that some programs will need it and may not prompt you of this leaving you to guess why they are not installing or performing correctly. For this reason I always install it.

So you might want to reinstall it using its standalone installer since it may not have uninstalled correctly anyway.

Just finished cleaning some things out from this post... http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/325945/various-infections/Things are working fine, except, cant update windows. Windows Update website, is showing no updates, no optional updates, only 2 optional hardware ones. Also, cant Install IE8, it fails... I explained on the other thread, I'l copy and paste...I tried to install IE8, but it failed. Said that an update failed to install, and that I should install it manually. It linked me to thishttp://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...;displaylang=enI tried to install this, but received an error message saying that the service pack I have installed is newer then this update.Any idea or should I move this to the xp forums?I do, I think. No updates are shown on Windows Update website, using the Custom option. Restore Hidden Updates button is greyed out. In light of this, I installed Installer 4.5, still no luck. Not really. Im guessing if updates were done, perhaps they were done through Automatic Updates?Under the Windows Update History, it only showed the windows update agent.I tried to reset windows update components using the Fix It fromhttp://support.microsoft.com/kb/971058Used, both options. Still no luck, and now under Update History on the windows update website, it no longer shows the windows update agent. Thanks in advance.

A:Windows Update not showing any updates

Hi try clicking " Restore hidden updates" which can be seen in your screenshots.
If that does not work follow this : Windows Update - Reset
If your problem still occurs Try pressing "change settings" under windows update change it to never check for updates, then press ok. Next change it back to recommended settings, always check.... and so on, then press ok.
Please provide feedback, with how this goes.

I've been facing this issue lately on this new OS.
Previously on W7 & W8 the updates categorized into 2 column (Important & Optional) where we can select the updates individually and download/install. This way I can get some optional drivers for memory card, printers & etc.

I couldn't find this option in W10. I choose to ignore it but my antivirus keep notifying me that optional downloads are available. I did click the "Run System Updates" but it navigates to System > Update & Security > Message and shows "System is up to date".

Sometimes it only updates the critical updates. The rest (Recommended & Optional) ignored/not notified on windows updates.
Anyone facing this issue? Able to solve? Please help.

I've recently built a computer with the aid of my friend with Windows 7 Ultimate (64 bit) installed back in mid August. During this 2 month period I've noticed that Windows hasn't informed be about any updates and whenever I go to check for updates, it says to restart the computer. Another thing to note is that my copy of Windows 7 was bought back in 2011 and has not been used since then.

Asides from this, I also got a notification regarding my copy of Windows 7 isn't genuine even though I bought it.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Please follow this tutorial and post an MGADiag report - then we can see what the problem is.

Please also state the Version and Edition of Windows quoted on your COA sticker (if you have one) on the case of your machine (or inside the battery compartment), but do NOT quote the Key on the sticker!

I recently made a new fresh install of Vista Ultimate 64 bit. I was using it already, but had to format and reinstall, so everything is new and clean.

I have noticed something strange in windows update: optional driver updates for some devices (such as my monitor or the realtek network adapter) are no longer available and they are not showing in the available optional updates list. They seem to work ok but they are displayed in device manager using the generic microsoft drivers.

For example, whenever a new network adapter driver was available, I used to receive a windows update notification telling me that new Realtek drivers were available. Now they are not showing anymore.

Settings for Windows update are "check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them" and "include recommended updates" is ticked.

A:Driver updates not showing in Windows Update

Did you install SP1? It is possible that the updated SP1 files are more recent than the previously shown drivers in WU.

Also, I have noticed that WU never includes the most recent driver available for a system, just usually an older one that is fully compatible with your OS - I noticed this time and time again with nVidia drivers, for example, WU wants to install 169.25, whereas the newest driver version is actually 170.16....

Hen in doubt, I go with the latest drivers from the hardware manufacturer's site as opposed ot Windows Update.

Both event viewer and the windows update log file indicate KB4489878 and KB4490628

Please can someone offer some help and assistance? As the title says, I'm having an issue with Windows Update for Windows 7, 64-Bit Home Premium Edition. I ran an aanti-virus, which came out clear

I did a little research on the web and found that for the hanging update, some guidance to stop update in the in services.msc and to delete 'Software Distribution' folder and deleted it, and then restarted the service for the folder to be replicated. When trying to download the browser, getting messages saying from Microsoft site saying some SP's and such is missing and when I have tried to manually make the Windows Update check for updates it just sits there checking for updates for hours and hours until you end up powering down the laptop. My question would be how remedy this or reverse this - so to carry on with updates pe... Read more

This morning I saw the latest Windows 7 updates on an old computer I have (A VM running in XCP-NG) to run an old version of Confluence Wiki but that's not really important.
After installing the updates and rebooting the VM is so slow that it looks frozen at times. I restarted it in safe mode to remove the updates but when I access the Windows Updates list from Programs and Features it shows "No updates installed."
Has anyone else seen something like this? I have backups of this VM so I'm working to restore from a backup and before you ask, I know - I have to update that Win7 machine to a more recent version of Windows.
Thanks in advance and best regards.

I've always used windows movie maker to make videos using clips that I take from a point and shoot camera. The files are .AVI and .MTS. I've never had problems before. Then I installed the latest window update which "upgraded" to a "better" version of movie maker.

Since the update, I get little yellow error signs in my video clips (different clips every time - not like just one is defective) and it says I must remove the defective videos before I can save the movie to a DVD. When I click on help, it says there is a problem with the codecs. On a seperate similar note - I am not able to open photos that were shot in RAW and the computer won't let me download the codec for RAW! All this codec crap happened after the windows update!

PLEASE HELP! I want my videos and pictures of my baby!! What codecs are needed? How do I get them? AARRGG!

It even keeps dropping the wifi connection, despite the wifi being perfectly stable. Have I completely destroyed this system?  Below are screen shots of the Vantage window with the BIOS and product number.  I've never had such an issue like this after a full system restore.  Thanks!

I tried some fixes like: Reset_Reregister_Windows_Update_Components, Reset_Windows_Update_History, MicrosoftFixit50362 (which is a Microsoft Installer Fixer that couldn't install PowerShell), MicrosoftFixit50202. But what I really need is installing .NET Framework 4. I tried forcing it to install, installing it step by step, but it couldn't go further than .NET Framework 3.5. I need that Framework, the other updates don't really matter. And the interesting thing is that my antivirus doesn't say that Windows is not up-to-date, which is not normal, in ESET Smart Security, if Windows is not up-to-date.

A:Windows Update stuck at Checking for Updates and can't install Updates manually

Hi antoniu200:

Many other Vista users have reported that Windows Update seems to get stuck at "Checking for updates..." for long periods of time, and this problem dates back to the August 2015 Patch Tuesday updates - see my screenshots in ScousaJAY's thread windows update just seems to hang while checking in the VistaForums. This month's December 2015 Patch Tuesday updates required a full hour on my machine before it finished the  "Checking for updates..." phase and finally presented a list of available updates, so you might want to try running a manual Windows Update and leaving your computer alone for an hour or so to see if it eventually runs to completion.

You might also want to read Nikilet's recent thread Updates were not configured correctly in that same forum.  Some Vista users, including myself, received an error message this month stating "Updates were not configured correctly. Reverting changes. Please do not turn off your computer" when they tried to install the December 2015 Patch Tuesday updates.  Six updates for the Vista OS and one cumulative update for IE9 were marked as "Failed" on my machine after Windows forced an automatic rollback and re-boot of my machine.  I re-ran Windows Update today and all Important updates that failed yesterday eventually installed successfully ("Checking for updates..." still took about one hour and I declined one Recommended update KB3112148 for Vista and one Optional update KB3106614 for Silver... I've got Office 2003 Student Edition (all installed, minus Outlook). I haven't done any updates to it. I did not install the Microsoft GDI+ Detection tool. And I only visit Windows Update (not Microsoft Update) and install the critical updates under custom install.

I'm wondering:

1. Are the updates for MS Office that are critical security things included when you do Windows Update? (For example, there are a number of things listed here towards the bottom: http://isc.sans.org/diary.html?storyid=2232 -- would those have been included in the last batch of critical Windows updates?

2. Do you need the GDI+ thing to do Office Updates?

3. When you go to the Office Updates site, it wants you to install and run some kind of Active X thing. Is this necessary? And can it cause any problems?

4. Can doing critical Office updates (separate from whatever, if anything, that comes with Windows Update) cause any problems or conflicts with other things on your computer?

Thanks for the help!

1. Are the updates for MS Office that are critical security things included when you do Windows Update?

1. No. You either do Windows update and Office update, or you do Microsoft update, which does both at once.

2. I think so, but I am not positive. If you need it, it will install it, or, if you decline, you may not get updates. One way to find out, try it.

3. I don't think it will do the updates without it. Again, try it. It never caused any problems for me having it.

4. I can't guarantee that, nor can anyone else. Sometimes these "h... Read more

This is an inconvenient delay, not anything serious. Running Windows 7, if it makes a difference.

Issue: Microsoft Security Essentials auto-updates block Microsoft Updates until MSE is finished.

Description: I have Microsoft Update (or Windows Update, whichever it's known as in 7) set to automatically check for updates but not download or install without my approval. I do this so I can review what's being updated, (I'm a little wary of Microsoft putting an anti-piracy app in as a "critical" update in the last year or two). Anyways, when I boot up the computer, it checks for updates and alerts me of them.

However, Microsoft Security Essentials also auto-checks for updates upon boot, and if it has an update it will automatically being downloading and installing it in the background. Which is all well and good, except whenever that's happening it causes MU to "fail" updates until it's done updating. Thus, I have to remember to wait until the MSE update is done, then run the MU update.

Question: MSE definition updates are included under "Optional" updates in MU, is there a way to make MSE stop updating independent of MU so I can queue all the updates together? I feel like this would be the easiest way to prevent this annoyance. I don't see an option, and I'd rather put up with this annoyance if the only solution is to put all updates back into Microsoft's hands completely.

A:Microsoft Security Essentials updates blocking other windows updates

My understanding of MSE is it will check several times during the to make it has the latest updates. Most GOOD VA programs will do this as there are several releases daily for AV definitions. This is the only way you and your machine will be aware of these releases.

When some of these attacks happen, a definition is released, but as the infection is refined, the the definition must also be refined and/or improved. I use F-Prot on my machines, but I install MSE on the kids and grand kids machines. I have seen as many as 12 releases in one day from F-Prot, this is what is call" being on top of things".

So I would not want to rely on ME being the one to check several times daily on all of my machines to see if a new release has been made.

I don't have that detection tool either. At least some of the office updates are available through the windows update feature. You can also navigate to the Office updates site from the windows update site. There are no problems with installing the office updates separately. In fact, I generally download only 1 or 2 updates at a time as I am on dial-up.

Previous issue

I have found a new flaw on this issue. It turns out that if IE is NOT the default browser, the option to move from Windows only to MS Updates will be missing! I guess this is part of the improved customer experience. This is after the site is added in compatibility
mode.
We were unable to get Office updated with Chrome as the default brower. Even using IE and pasting in the Windows update link directly in, the option to use MS Update is hidden. For what possible purpose?
Simply by setting IE as the default and using the EXACT SAME LINK, the option is now present. Wow! Really?
Really?
Really?
I hope this saves someone some time as it wasted about two hours today.

Hi bro,I had the same problem 3 days ago and I have solved the problem so, I think, I can help you, first of all I need to know if you have any antivirus tool intalled on your computer,if it so,[download CLEANER sofware from filehippo.com-it's important]uninstall them, for this action use safe mode by pressing F8 button, when you boot with safe mod you will not be able to uninstall your antivirus, because you have loaded only the drivers that needs safe mod, that's why you must delete your antivirus manually, for best result go to control panel-->folder options-->mark "show hidden files, folders, archives" apply and ok then go to user folder and open AppData\Local\"antivirus folder" and delete it,after this open AppData\Roaming\"antivirus folder" and delete it as well,at the end,you have to delete the main folder of your antivirus, that is installed on C or another drive.for example:C:\Program Files\ESET.After that open cleaner go to REGISTRY and scan for issues and if you get[I am sure you will get errors] any problem, fix them[delete them, you don't need to save registry settings before deleting] after cleaning registry, you have to run cleaner,so, go to software main window and press RUN CLEANER button[it's the last step] and restart your computer with normal mode. Now you can install updates and configure your windows safely.I hope this will help you

I have never posted on a forum before so apologies if I am doing this wrong. The problem started when I tried to plug in my (new) iphone to my Dell pc. The device was not detected so I tried to update my itunes software - update failed and I received a Windows 7 error. After searching through multiple forums and trying to download windows utility cleaner, etc - nothing has helped. Also, if I try to run the 'Check for Updates" link on my computer - if NEVER stops searching for updates and there for I cant update anything. Not sure where to start

A:Windows Check for updates keeps running-all installation/updates fail

Let's start with the easy stuff

To properly analyse and solve problems with Activation and Validation, we need to see a full copy of the report produced by the MGADiag tool
(download and save to desktop - http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 )
Once saved, run the tool.
Click on the Continue button, which will produce the report.
To copy the report to your response, click on the Copy button in the tool (ignore any error messages at this point), and then paste (using either r-click/Paste, or Ctrl+V ) into your response.
- **in your own thread**, please

Please also state the Version and Edition of Windows quoted on your COA sticker (if you have one) on the case of your machine (or inside the battery compartment), but do NOT quote the Key on the sticker!

Suddenly Windows 7 has stopped installing Windows Updates. It downloads, then creates restore point, starts installation, but then comes back with the error code 800F0900. This happens with all the updates when carried out individually, critical or optional. I first went through the process of clearing all the Start-up Programs in the Services section of msconfig. As that did not solve it I then stopped all but MS services, and that did not solve it.  I tried the Microsoft .NET Setup Verification Tool. This said there were problems that it could not fix and sent a report to Microsoft.  Following an earlier thread on this site, I installed and used the Windows Repair program from Tweeking.com. This failed to solve the problem. Does any one have any other possible advice to help solve this problem ?

A:Windows Updates will not install. Error code 800F0900 for all updates.

I would try running the System Update Readiness Tool:  http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=20858 .

Hey wondering on what the best method is for adding missing drivers and Windows 7 Pro updates. This used Laptop came with a fresh install of 7 Pro without any driver or Windows updates. Is the best solution to start off with drivers, or to install windows updates first ?

Also do I let windows try to find the drivers for me ? Or is it better another way ?

Anything I have to look out for? I hope its easy as it sounds. Normally my computers in the past have Factory Settings which include a fresh install with original drivers. I'm sorta new to this type of fix. I only installed graphic drivers in past from scratch.

Any help much appreciated, Thanks in advance...

A:Windows 7 driver and updates missing

I would do Windows Updates first and then do manufacturer driver updates after. That way it will prompt you if the manufacturer driver is newer/older.

With the Anniversary Update, are Office updates now automatically included in Windows Updates?
