How to read the SSD pulled from a Lenovo U300s?

Q: How to read the SSD pulled from a Lenovo U300s?

I have a Lenovo IdeaPad U300s which has died, and of course I don't have current backups. I figure the SSD still has my data, and thought I'd just pull the SSD and read it on another computer, but I don't know what kind of adaptor I need to use. The SSD isn't in a typical hard drive case, it looks more like a memory card with a series of chips, but instead of edge connectors that go into a bus slot, it has a connector to a ribbon cable on one end. You can see a picture on page 58 of the hardware manual: https://download.lenovo.com/consumer/mobiles_pub/ideapad_%20u300_u300s_u400_hmm_1st_edition_oct_2011... Does anyone have any hints on how I could read this data? Feel free to chastize me for not making backups :-)

Preferred Solution: How to read the SSD pulled from a Lenovo U300s?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi there. Your computer uses a Mini PCIe SSD. If you want to retrieve your data, you will need to buy a Mini PCIe SSD adapter to USB. There are many options for such on Amazon, eBay, etc.

Does anybody have any idea where to purchase a replacement SSD for a U300s? Have not seen any other laptop using this type of a connector. Any help is appreciated.

A:U300s- SSD

hi gr8bear,

Upon looking the U300s' specs, it uses a 7mm, 2.5in SATA HDD. You will need to get a 7mm, 2.5in SATA SSD for the upgrade like this one:

Vector - 7mm Low Profile SATA 3 2.5" SSD

Edit:
My bad, this is for the U300 not the U300s.

Not guaranteed to be working at your SSD, but worth to try. Please do this method on your own risk.  A few weeks ago my U300S ssd was half dead.Started with constant 100% disk usage and slow performance, then suddenly Windows fell into BSOD. I tried to restore and clean install Windows several time without any success; unable to format the ssd (somehow it was hard-locked).I came into conclusion that this poor thing was gone completely, so i should build a custom made M.2 ssd adapter. Look here: Custom U300S SSD adapterBefore this ssd is completely dismantled, i tried to BAKE it first. Nothing to lose anyway.(I had several good experiences with dead VGA and it worked nicely after i baked it.)The idea is similar with reflow, without any special tools. Do this simple steps.1. Take the ssd out from the laptop. 2. Unwrap the aluminium foil completely.3. Clean the ssd with isopropyl alcohol thoroughly. Make sure no glue or dirt or impurities on the ssd chip/pcb.4. Prepare the OVEN, pre-heat with temperature around 220 Celcius. Electric or Gas oven just the same.5. Use aluminium balls  or cup as support. Do not put SSD directly on the pan !! (see picture below)6. Put SSD into hot oven, let it baked for 8-9 minutes. And then turn the oven off.7. Open the oven door a little bit, let it cool down slowly for around 30 minutes.8. Re-wrap the SSD with aluminium foil and try it on your U300S. Done. Here the results. No more 100% Disk Usage.&n... Read more

Hi there, Llewh -
Thank you for writing in to the Lenovo Forum - happy to have you here today.

I think these steps might work.

Go to the upper right side (corner) of the screen to bring out the charms menu and go into PC Settings.
Click on PC and Devices.
You should see something related to mouse or TouchPad.
If there is an option, you can disable it.

You can also try these,

Go to Control Panel.
Click on Device Manager.
Find and Click on Mice and other pointing devices.
Select the MousePad and right click on it.
If there is an option then DISABLE it or click on PROPERTIES.
Go to the Driver tab and click Disable.

Update us how it goes.

Hello!I recieved (very) used Lenovo U300s from a collegue for 'repair and restore'. Apparently she wanted to try out Linux, and in the process she wiped out the hard drive. After realizing, that Linux does not suit her taste, she asked me to return it to (ioriginal) Windows 7 or 10. And now comes the hard part. The laptop does not come with COA sticker - neither on the underside, not inside (I checked the inside of cover and under the battery). Of course the laptop came without any recovery media, and the owner absolutely ignored making backups. Is the key lost, or is there still a way to retrieve it? I talked with her, and she seems ok with possibly updating to Windows 10, but I still need (I think) to install even for a while genuine Windows 7 to reserve Windows 10 key. Is there any other way to install directly Windows 10 that's genuine? What can I do now?

A:Getting Windows 7 back on U300s after complete wipe

hi Vatharian,

Welcome to the Forums.

If the U300s came preloaded with Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit as listed in this datasheet then you will need to do the following:

1. Download a Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 64-bit ISO (you can get this on the net) or if you can't find a Home Premium version, any Windows 7 64-bit ISo should do and just create a universal Windows 7 installation disc (see this guide).

2. After getting the ISO, follow this guide on how to create a bootable Win7 flashdrive and use it to install Win7 Home Premium SP1 64-bit on the U300s. If successful, Windows will automatically read the product key in the motherboard and will activate your copy of Windows.

Tip:
Once Windows is installed, you can view the product key using this guide (see Options 2 to 6)

3. After Win7 is installed and activated, follow this guide on how to upgrade to Windows 10 (see Step 3) then activate it.

Note:
You will need to the procedure above to get an activated copy of Windows 10. If you perform a clean install of Windows 10 on first attempt. you will need to start over from the top (unless you have a retail key to activate Windows 10).

Hope this helps you out.

I was dual booting Windows 8.1 Update and Ubnutu 14.04 From the windows disk manager I deleted all Ubuntu partitions and rebooted my notebook. I was immediatlly present with the grub rescue promt. Normally this is a quick and easy fix, by booting a windows USB/CD and repairing the windows MBR.  My problem is I can't access the bios or the boot menu to change the boot order. Nothing I've tried has let me get into the bios to set my USB stick as the first boot option.  Using the small recovery key button on the side of the notebook which normally boots the notebook to the screen where you can choose which drive to boot does the same as the power button. There is no bios flash screen or abililty to press any keys before getting to the grub screen.  I've drained the battery and left over night hoping this would reset the state it seems to be stuck in but that also did nothing.  Here is a short video showing what happens when I boot the notebook http://youtu.be/2FpC2Deuawk

I have read that the normal drive erase is not a good idea for SSD's. I have also read that most SSD manufacturers should have a utility that will allow you to force it to flush deleted data. Does anyone know if this is available thru Lenovo. The SSD controller is a Jmicron but I did not see any utilities on their website.

Here is the deal, hope anyone can help.

I gave my old rig to my brother but kept my HDD's.

The Motherboard is a A8N-SLI (chipset nforce4)

He wanted to keep his HD because of all data and XP.

The problem I'm having is when the Windows XP starting up screen appears, the one with the 3 moving block, I get a blue screen with related HDD error.

I can already tell that the XP installed on his HDD does not have the right Nvidia SATA Drivers for the the A8N board. his XP/HDD was installed on a MSI K8N neo2.

Is there any way to slipstream the nforce4 SATA drivers on his disk?

FYI his disk is properly detected if not selected as boot disk and with my HDD as boot. All file and folders are visible.

I appreciate anyone who read this.

hey all, im in need of some advice.
Long story short. I have a gigabyte board, core2duo. All worked fine. Got new graphics card yesterday. all worked fine. New ram came this morning. No problem until the ram. Installed it, fine no probs. Installed windows, no worries, however 7 was really really sluggish. Thought ah ha, seen this before my old ram was slightly clocked. Perhaps this ram cant handle that. Went into bios, not messing i just reset bios to defaults and pop nothing. Went to reboot the PC and now nothiing happens. Black screen. The fans spin up, its like the PC wants to boot but nothing happens. Now, ive cleared cmos, left the jumper on for ages just incase. But no, im wondering if anyone else has had problems like this and if you overcame them how you did it.

Thanks in advance

Create more slack in your DVI cable? Use a USB hub even though I hate them. You really shouldn't be doing anything that is causing any pulling or jerking of the cards in your machine - nothing should be that tight.

(This doesn't necessarily need to go in this forum section but I could not find another section which best fit it.)

I use an (Alienware) laptop and while moving around accidentally pulled the headphone wire, and like all laptops the hole is located on the side. The metal bit bent very slightly but ripped off the small plastic ring around the hole and (I think) shifted something inside it.
I now have to use the any of the surround sound connections because the headphone one does not detect anything.

I want to know the easiest and quickest way to fix such a problem. I have tried calling the support line, and they should transfer me to the corporate support department (ordered internationally through a local agent; on my previous support call they transfered me and explained why), but they refuse to do so and I think they do not understand me.

Please help me, this is very irritating..

Anyone know what's going on with the 1.5.2 BIOS for the 7280 and 7480? I noticed that the RSS feed is showing 1.4.6 as if it were new, and the 1.5.2 download is gone from the site.  It's already on our latest batch of laptops, so I'm wondering why it was pulled, and what Dell is advising people do.

A:BIOS 1.5.2 for 7280 and 740 pulled?

Hmm, and the support.dell.com page for the 7480 now shows 1.1.2 as the current version, even though expanding "Other Versions" shows several other options with higher version numbers but older dates -- and the dates themselves are weird, with only 1-2 days between releases, which I can't imagine is accurate.  For what it's worth, my 7480 has been on 1.5.2 for a while and I'm not having any issues. This feels to me like a listing bug rather than a formal retraction, but I have no inside knowledge here.

I'm perfectly fine with the underclocked speed, as it doesn't affect my gaming performance. I just want to put an end to this mystery, though. So, any help would be appreciated! Thanks! :-)

Hello, Firstly, i am sorry but i don't speak english very well. Secondly, i just bought an external bluray reader which reads bluray thanks to the Cyberlink PowerDVD Application. Nevertheless, when i try to read a bluray, it doesn't work. So, i launched the Cyberlink bd advisor and it is written there is a problem with my laptop graphic card. The laptop is a thinkpad x carbon 4th gen and the graphic card is an intel hd graphic 520. So, i tried to reinstall the drivers after having retrieved them from the intel website. Nevertheless, i get an error message : "you should contact the computer constructor in order to update your drivers". Then, i went to the lonovo x carbon 4th gen driver's page in order to get the good drivers. However, it doesn't change something... So, i come here to ask you some help.

Hi everyone, i've just bought a Lenovo Yoga 720 13'', but had problem with it as it was not resuming correctly from Sleep mode and spontaneously when resuming, I was receiving the following error: Default Boot Device Missing or Boot Failed. Insert Recovery media and hit any key. Then select Boot manager to choose a new boot device or to boot recovery mode.  Trying to solve this I did the following steps: performed UEFI Firmware upgrade to latest version: 2.04, provided by Lenovo - NO RESULTswitched the SSD from RAID to AHCI (it came default on RAID, although there was only one SSD installed) - NO RESULTDisabled Secure boot - NO RESULT  Finally, after a lot of research and solutions that did not produce any positive result, I've decided to reinstall Windows 10 on this laptop, so: I created a new USB stick that I created with the official MediaCreationTool from MicrosoftWhen I booted, and tried to install Windows, to my big surprise, NO PARTITION can be removed/formatted or used for the installation. Every single time I try do any action on any of the partitions, the following error is displayed:We couldn't format the selected partition. Hello community, I cannot change any settings in my UEFI on my B50-70 Notebook. The last thing I installed was ubuntu, now I wanted to install Windows 10 again.I cannot boot from any UEFI USB/CD/HDD anymore, it still has ubuntu as the only UEFI Boot entry. It says "cannot boot ubuntu" all the time, but It doesn't accept any changes to the boot order. Also removing the battery or the HDD doesn't change anything. It still wants to boot to the "ubuntu" boot entry.Loading default settings does nothing. All settings are like before after reboot.I still can boot in Legacy mode though, but I always need to hit enter to confirm the "cannot boot ubuntu" dialog.I have the lastest UEFI Firmware installed (3.04 or so). Now since I cannot change any settings or boot entries, I think the chip where all settings are saved is somehow burned in all the settings forever. I tried many EFI Boot sources, these work on all other notebooks/pcs, also they worked on this notebook before. Is there any way to read out which .efi file it has set for the entry "ubuntu" from a legacy booted OS? So I could make a workaround by placing the Windows bootloader to the same path with the same filename. Thanks in advance.

Hello, tech wizards. It has been a while but I'm back with a mystery. My little server lights are blinking crazy blue and, naturally, I've got nothing going on to the naked eye (exited out of anti-virus in the event of some update, no downloads, etc). I don't know why I let my boyfriend use the computer.

I am at a loss.

My computer seems to be running fine. I have had no problems with it for a very long time and today I went to put a DVD in the disk drive and opened my computer to see NO LINK for the disk drive listed.

SO I thought no problem go to option 2 and let it autostart. Usually if I put a CD or DVD in it starts up and loads the program. Well it is making the sound like it is loading, I can hear it turning but nothing happens.

Any ideas what might SUDDENLY have happened and where I can go to try and verify the sudden disappearance of my drive's capabilities??

Any help is appreciated???

My computer has just done an instantaneous shutdown twice in a row while playing Rainbow Six Lockdown. My computer is watercooled (CPU, both GPU's, all HD's and the chipset). The CPU was only 32C or 89* Fahrenheit. The GPU's were running at 41C or at 105* F. That isn't the least bit hot. What the heck could be doing this?

As my description might turna bit unclear due to my quite lacking skills in computers I'd first like to ask what might lead to a computer shutting of like somebody pulled the plug while it's starting up.
The time until it crashes tends to be like 20-30sec, less if I decide to choose Bios or Boot Menu (It stops at the selection screen for those for a while, if I don't choose it shuts down after a while anyway.

Everything was fine until I 3 days ago got my Phenom X4 9950. While using this one I sometimes got as far as that it had loaded windows 7 and I could check the device manager where it only said that the drives hadn't been found. Then it crashed again, I suspect the heat became too high.

Now after a couple of hours trying to find the possible fault I decided that the motherboard wasn't capable of using Quad-cores and switched back to my normal CPU, the Athlon 6000 64-bit X2, that had been working perfectly in the past except of some temperature-issues
( I simply can't get how people manage to keep their temperatures at 60-65C under full load, perhaps my room temperatur is too high or then my older fan was useless)
Now ofcourse nowit wont go further than to the point where after selection screen for setup/boot menu it would say "Reboot and insert proper boot device". I took apart the computer to check the CPU's pins and that stuff but it was all looking good so I put everything back and now it wont even go past the ... Read more

Did you apply thermal paste to the CPU when you changed it? It is a bit scary when someone says "due to my quite lacking skills in computers" and then attempts something like swapping CPU's
