dead keys on keyboard

Q: dead keys on keyboard

Hi Guys

Whist I was using notepad at home to write something I found that the following keys on my laptop are dead r, u,y, 2,4,and 0. virtually all the computing I have done in the last few days is general browsing for television listings and email. I use use notepad for wordprocessing beacuse its quick.

I have only tested out the lowercase alphabet and the set of numbers, but not the full set. I am using another computer from a different location to type this posting. My keyboard is a standard Sony laptop qwerty keyboard.

I have a Sony Vaio laptop, WinXP Pro, 512Mb RAM. I have checked for viruses, fierwall and ran spybot and the laptop appears to be clean. I rebooted with a restore point from a couple of days ago when I know everything was working and it still made no difference this morning. The keys are still dead. I cannot check the keys with an external keyboard to compare becasue I do not have a spare one. I will try to get one.

In the meantime if anyone has suggestions it would be most welcome.

May I add I was helped out by you guys ony a few days ago when my external USB hardrive suddenly became inactive and the problem was solved by a 'USB drive cleanup'

Many thanks in advance.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have an HP DV9700T laptop. Is there a tech that reads this forum?
My (9 O L . ) buttons are dead on my laptop.
I ordered a new one & installed it. I still have the same problen.
A friend told me it may be a component (chip, diode, or resistor) on the MB that died.

There must be a tech that knows what controls these keys.

Any help, Please??

So I've been asked to give my Mom a hand with her laptop. It's a Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga 13, though the website seems to drop or parenthesize the IdeaPad part of that, running a 64 bit version of Windows 8.1

Two keys aren't working, the F12/increase screen brightness key and the PrintScreen key. (This is why we just discovered it, no idea when the error cropped up.) I've found workarounds for all of the things the keys do - brightness can be adjusted in Power Options, and the F12 and PrintScreen functions can both be duplicated using the on screen keyboard function. But they're kinda annoying and cumbersome, and the error may be symptomatic of a larger problem.

I've tried rebooting the computer and cleaning the keyboard thus far, to no avail (though it is using one of these stupid new chiclet keyboard styles, which makes popping off keys and cleaning the actually functional part of the keyboard impossible through the normal, convenient method I've used in the past.)

The keyboard was replaced relatively recently, and I will be getting in touch with the gentleman who handled that when his store is open tomorrow. I'll also be checking with the official tech support people at Lenovo, but I find this and other fora are usually much better at cutting through that ploddingly systematic approach that big tech support divisions use and finding the real problem in a reasonable timeframe. If either of these resources pays off, I'll post the solution here as well.

Hi, Try the following. Download the AMD HD Graphics installer on the following link and save it to your Downloads folder. http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp74501-75000/sp74716.exe When done, open your Downloads folder, right click the AMD Graphics installer and select 'Run as Administrator' to start the installation. When this has completed, shutdown the notebook. Unplug the AC Adapter and then remove the battery.  Hold down the Power button for 30 seconds.  Re-insert the battery and plug in the AC Adapter. Tap away at the esc key as you start the notebook to launch the Start-up Menu and then select f10 to enter the bios menu.  Press f9 to load the defaults ( this is sometimes f5, but the menu at the bottom will show the correct key ), use the arrow keys to select 'Yes' and hit enter.  Press f10 to save the setting and again use the arrow keys to select 'Yes' and hit enter. Start the notebook and let Windows fully load for a few minutes before checking. Regards, DP-K

Hey guys,

I'm having a really big problem with my keyboard. I'm running windows 7. The problem started about four days ago, I've searched for various ways to solve this problem but I couldn't find any.

The issue is that randomly, my keyboard will stop typing keys and every time I hit a key, instead of typing a key, it would act as if I was hitting a shortcut. Such as, when it happens i hit the "F" key and the tools options come up. This happens on every windows even on MSN messenger, I hit my keys and it hits shortcut keys for the window I'm on.

I would be using my computer for a while and the keys would work fine but then a little later, somethings 30 minutes sometimes an hour or two, randomly they turn into shortcut keys. Every key i hit, I tried a new keyboard but it seems to happen also. I don't get the issue, I've scanned fully using malwareBytes, MCAffee, and Advanced system pro, but it's still happening. It's really frustrating and annoying when it does happen. I've turned my keyboard off and on, re sync'd. I'm starting to lean more towards it being a virus or something that messed with my settings somehow.

Malwayre Bytes did find something while scanning

files\Spigot\wtxpcom\components\widgitoolbarff.dll (Adware.WidgiToolbar) -> Quarantined and deleted successfully.

I'm really stumped here, I haven't tried un-installing my keyboard & re installing it but Idk what good t... Read more

A:Keyboard keys randomly turn into shortcut keys

I would also like to add that, when this occurs. I have to restart my computer for the keyboard to work correctly. It's wireless & I've tried a wired keyboard also, it's the same issue.

Also when this happens, while on the internet. Every time I click a link or the internet like "home" "news" anything at all on the internet even an image, it won't go to it but instead it will download the data into my computer... It's very strange & I'm completely stumped on what to do. Or to even search this on google for other similar issues, I don't even know how I would go around to search that. Or what I would type in the search bar. This happens with both Firefox & google chrome. Even outside the internet in just my desktop, it's impossible to type even on notepad.

Sometimes the keys are slow to respond or not work at all. It was working fine til a couple days ago. I even reinstalled the operating systems and still doing this. All the rest of the keys work fine except for a few in that row. I dont know if it was a update that caused this or a hardware problem but id like to get it working right agaln.

Hi,

I am using a Razer Arctosa keyboard on my desktop computer running Win7 (keyboard is approx 2 years old).

I am experiencing the following (recently, and sometimes it occasionally goes back to normal):

Pressing "w" registers "w4"
Pressing "W" (shift + w) registers "W$"
Pressing "4" registers "w4"
Pressing "$" (shift + 4) registers "W$"
(As if "w" and "4" are linked; occasionally it registers as "4w")

Pressing "u" registers "u" and F5.
(which means when I am typing and press the "u" it refreshes my page... this is the second time I am writing this...)

Pressing the Windows key registers NumLock toggle.

Pressing "7" registers "/7"

This is all of the weird ones I have noticed. All other keys seem normal.
As I type this it has done the above, but now it is back to normal. Cannot find a pattern when it decides to change from crap to normal. It is back to crap again.
This is the 4th day since it started and the computer has been restarted/shutdown various times.
I have also checked for malware and it is all clear.
The most recent keyboard drivers have been downloaded and installed, but did not fix it.
No liquids have been spilled.
Have searched the web and have not encountered a solution (or someone with the exact kind of problem).
Anyone has any idea of a fix or what may be affecting it?

Thanks,
Destinknee

A:Keyboard: some keys registering 2 keys

Pretty much every time I see this it's due to something spilled on the keyboard that has damaged it or just a keyboard that has failed.

Test it on another computer, if it does the same thing then it needs to be replaced. On the other computer don't load any drivers or software for it just plug it in and wait for Windows to install it's drivers for it and test it.

As I wrote in the title, my Shift and Alt keys stopped working for keyboard shortcuts. However, the Shift key still works when capitalizing letters.

I've been dealing with this problem off/on for the past two weeks and haven't been able to figure it out. I've gone into Ease of Access features and turned on/off all of the available options (Mouse Keys, Sticky Keys, Toggle Keys, Filter Keys). I've pressed Shift for 8 seconds, and pressed it 5 times, and still haven't been able to correct it.

Thank you in advance for any help offered.

Possibly helpful additional information:
I've got a Spanish/Latin American keyboard layout installed in addition to the US English keyboard layout. I toggle back and forth with Left Alt + Shift (which is how I noticed my Shift key stopped working).
I play a game whose controls rely on a lot of Shift key pressing and holding.

When was the last time you used a can of air cleaner on the keyboard? If it isn't from contact wear often keyboards tend to get loaded up with dust and debris!

One example of that is having any snacks onhand around a pc where little bits get passed along from your fingers onto and under the keys themselves. Keyboards are known to get loaded up fast with any foods present!

I have a Dell M1330 Laptop that has served me quite well for several years. I just replaced the keyboard the other day and everything is working fine, except that the new keyboard has a slightly different layout than the old keyboard did. For example, with the new keyboard all the F1, F2, F3, etc.. keys have function secondaries on them like multimedia, brightness, antennae toggle, and so on. My old keyboard didnt have most of these and so when I attempt to use them on the new keyboard they simply do not work. In fact when I use function keys as if I still had my old keyboard installed the functions work, which means it is the software interpretation of the keys that I need to change. Does anybody know how I can fix this so that the keys of the new keyboard and functions match what the keys actually say?

Another thing to add is that some of the new function keys on the new laptop such as antennae toggle were not on my last keyboard at all because they are softkeys on the case of my computer, and I am not sure a function like that would be able to be added to the keyboard mapping at all, but I'm not sure.

Also, I would prefer to not install third party software to accomplish this, even if it means I need to delve into the registry manually. Can anybody help??

I try taking the key off, cleaning underneath, but nothing seems to be working. After that I try to use usb keyboard and it seems the key can be entered. So this is the problem. I have a dell monitor at an apartment and a samsung tv at another house. I move my laptop back and forth.

I left the settings for the Dell monitor and had it as "Make this my main display" where the built in display is extended desktop.

I plug the Samsung TV in and b/c of the settings and the resolution of the Dell it does not support that resolution. So I can't open the "Screen Resolution" page because it thinks it is putting it on the TV which is blank. I can't see where the mouse is to move it over. If you unplug the monitor to move it over to the built-in it no longer gives you options to the 2nd monitor settings to change the "make my main display" back to built-in while you adjust the resolution for the 2nd display.

See what I mean? How can I Move a window that is on a 2nd screen not showing back to the part of the extended desktop that is?

I was doing some tech support for my mom regarding screen captures and discovered the print screen key (and eventually the F12 key as well) is not working, on an otherwise fully functional keyboard.  The laptop in question is a Yoga13 running Windows 8.1 (Yes, it survived the forced Windows 10 update era) It will be needed tomorrow, so I didn't want to do anything drastic just yet; I've rebooted the computer and cleaned the keyboard as much as possible (those chiclet style keys don't pop off the way old style keys did, so cleaning under them is problematic).  No effect. I've found workarounds for all of the features assigned to these keys - the onscreen keyboard handles the normal F12 and PrintScreen functions, and Power Options allows for brightness adjustments independent of the F12's special function (which is good, because I cranked the brightness way down testing the keyboard - F11 works just fine), but we'd rather not have to deal with these solutions long term. We had the keyboard replaced at a reputable computer repair shop a while back - I'll be getting in touch with the proprietor there tomorrow, and I've already made a post on TechSupportForum.  I'll keep you posted on what I try based on their advice.

Hello to all,
I have been scouring the internet looking for answers to this. Maybe someone else out there can help. I have 13 VGN-BX760 laptops. I have started upgrading them from XP to Win 7 x64. Evrything works fine except for the Shift keys! Neither of them work at all. (actually, the first one worked fine for about 3 months) I have tried new keyboards, nope. I have tried all of the filters and sticky keys tricks, nope. I have called Sony and they say there is no known issue. I find that hard to beleive since it has already happened to 2 of them. Shift keys work perfectly on an external keyboard, so I know it's not the OS.

Ideas?

So what's happening is occasionally, while I'm typing, it repeats letters, as if the keyboard temporarily locks up. (Sometimes, but it's rare because I usually type continuously, it just stops me from pressing keys for a bit.) It's like "Hello my naaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa..."
And what's weird is it only happens after I pressed any of the lock keys before (disabling doesn't fix it.)
I'm using a keyboard connected directly to my PC, with up to date drivers.

I'm creating my own ancient greek layout, but I can't get the dead keys to work. Alt Gr normally works, but not with the dead keys.

´ + α should give ά, but instead, pressing ' once returns ´´ (i.e. 2 accents), and pressing a afterwards has no effect (besides adding an α). Why is this?

Furthermore, pressing AltGr+' should return the dead key ῀, but instead, it does nothing. Pressing a afterwards just returns an α.

I hope you can help me out.

So I've had my Razer Anansi keyboard for about 4 months now, never had any problems with it. I decided since I hadn't cleaned it since I'd gotten it that I would clean it, so I did so, using moist Q - Tips to clean out the inside of the keyboard and soaking the keys in warm water to get off any dirt and grime that may have gotten into them. After putting my keys all back on my keyboard and giving it a go, the keys seemed to be very rough and it takes a more than needed amount of force to press on the keys individually. I was just wondering if spraying Silicon lubricant out of the can onto the keys bottom would help, or if there was anything I could do to the keys to make them easier to use. Thanks!

A:Keyboard Keys

It really depends how the thing is constructed, but silicone, being an insulator, would prevent the carbon contact bridges that exist on most modern ketboards from conducting very well, or at all. Also, washing, cleaning, or rubbing those delicate contacts can also cause them to stop functioning just as many years of use would. If those contacts are what you have, then each can be repainted with commercially available trace material. Or you may simply want to toss it and buy a new one.

Hi, It sounds like you have the wrong keyboard layout set - ie Uk keyboard layout for a US keyboard or vice versa. If you have more than one keyboard layout set in Windows 10, you can toggle between them by holding down the Ctrl Key and pressing the Shift key Alternatively, you can change the layout for your keyboard as described on the link below. Change Keyboard Layout - Windows 8 & 10 Regards, DP-K

Make sure your regional and language options are set for your area and keyboard. You may have a US keyboard set.

Computer keyboard on my ASUS Notebook X5EAE . System Windows 10
Suddenly the @ symbol has swopped position with the " symbol and also the # symbol has been replaced with the\ symbol The pound symbol when pressed now shows the #. I have pressed all the keys and cannot find a pound symbol. Any help would be very much appreciated. Thanks

I'm guessing you are in the UK? The octothorpe (#) is alternatively called the pound sign over here. Can you check to see what language it's set to?
Click the Start menu and select Settings.
Select Time & language.
Click Region & language in the left column.
Under Languages click the language you want as default and click Set as default.

Hello, I would like to know if it is a hardware problem of the keyboard on my Acer AspireV5-571P, only some fkeys are working and the numpad enter iis working I already tried the following:
Reinstall keyboard drivers

Tried with a live USBLinux and the keyboard isnt working in Linux too.

A new fairly new HP laptop, and a couple of times recently when I leave it for a while and it goes into hibernation, when I come back to it everything opens fine and I can move around to where I want to go, but when I try to type, the keyboard is dead!! Nothing!! Screen is fine, mouse works, touch pad works but the keys are dead!! I've tried everything I know but it is simply dead!! Only thing I have found that will get it back into operation is to shut down and re-boot. This is time consuming and really aggravating!! I even tried a "System Restore" to date before it happened the first time. No help.

Any ideas on what causes this or how to prevent it will be appreciated. It's not consistent, so I hesitate to take it back to the store until I can reproduce it.

Hello everyone, new here and hope I can get some help. Ive looked around here a bit and searched some but without much luck.

I have a Dell Inspiron 600m with windows XP (still under warranty) that has been very problematic.

The last few months have presented a whole slew of problems, so to keep it short i have reinstalled windows, started fresh and have used adaware, spybot and avg to get rid of a whole bunch of viruses and spyware.

Now, the keyboard won't work. It went from working, to spitting out dashes, equal signs and smilies and bringing up the help window for whatever program i am running, to simply nothing.

As far as i can tell all the software and drivers are up to date, and there appear to be no other problems

Its never been dropped, HOWEVER, a couple months ago (yes i know i sound like an idiot) i got a little big of orange juice on the keyboard...the start of the problems (many of which in the beginning i left out). Cleaning the keyboard seemed to work for some time, but recently its been acting up again.

during startup there is a lot of beeping, similar to what would result from a stuck key, but no keys appear to be stuck, and the computer seems to recognize the keyboard as fully functioning.

Any thoughts?

I hope I gave you all the info you need, and i appreciate any insight you can provide,
thanks in advance
matt
