Dramatic Increase in Data Usage and New Tabs in Chrome Created Automatically

Q: Dramatic Increase in Data Usage and New Tabs in Chrome Created Automatically

I use Comcast as my ISP. They provide a Data Meter so I can check on my data usage and not go over the 250GB monthly limit. I check it daily. Yesterday it was at 56 GB for the entire month. Today when I checked it, it was at 110 GB - it had doubled almost overnight.

This computer has recently shown a change in behavior. I use the Google Chrome browser and I have noticed that a new tab will suddenly be created without any input from me. The new tab is created but focus does not shift to it - I still remain in the current tab.  I have never viewed the new tab after it has been created. I just close it by clicking the little X, but I have noticed that the new tab contains things like the FBI scare warning about malware on my computer or the new tab is a web site containing  some kind of porn. This new tab is created randomly - I cannot recreate this occurrence on demand.

I have run full system scans of Malwarebytes and Microsoft Security Essentials and nothing was found.

Chrome is opening many, many tabs at once. It isn't redirecting me anywhere, it's just opening the same tab. For example, I'll go to Yahoo and it will open 7 tabs of Yahoo. I'll try to search for something and it will act as if I typed in a website and take me to the search page or "page not found" message before I finished typing the search term.

I cannot go into Chrome settings because it then freaks out and opens 1,000 tabs of settings so I can't mess with anything.

Some people have mentioned "Lucky tab" being a program running that causes problems. It isn't on my task manager's list. It isn't there.

Firefox and IE aren't doing this.

I don't know if this is malware, adware, or just a problem with my browsers. I already posted in the Chrome and other browsers sub-forum, only to be told to go here.

I don't have access to a re-install disc or boot CD for Windows.

Please note that DDS isn't working for me. I have downloaded it from the provided link, as well as a different one, and it never works. It always says to me that it "can't run in compatibility mode."

In place of a DDS log, here are my HijackThis logs. If you can help me make DDS work, I'll see about getting those logs. I figured it was better to provide something than nothing.

OK, so recently Chrome has been opening the same tab 4 or 5 or 1,000 times. For example, I'll go to Yahoo and it will open 5 tabs of Yahoo. Or I'll try to Google something, and it will start searching before I finished typing the search terms.

Firefox and IE aren't doing this.

I can't adjust my Chrome settings because it just opens 1,000 new tabs when I access settings.

I've tried uninstalling it and reinstalling it. No luck. Some people have mentioned "Lucky tab," but I don't have that or at least couldn't find it in the task manager. I don't know if it's a virus, spyware, a problem with Chrome itself, or a sign of something larger.

Virus scans and Adw Cleaner have found nothing relevant.

I have attached a Hijack This log just in case it's useful.

Earlier I thought it was a problem with Google Chrome browser, but it has affected the Firefox too. I have Bit defender installed but still something has got installed in my system.

The problem is:
Google chrome opens multiple tabs and closes few tabs and opens again multiple tabs automatically. The sites which are opened are links within the main site I was browsing. The same behavior is seen in Google Chrome and Firefox. I have not checked with IE yet. But its too much irritating to work with.

It seems to me like some browser hijack has taken place. I am posting my logs here. Kindly get through the same and find me a solution.

Thanks,
Abhilash.

Hi there

I got a virus/trojan of some sort today when an IT technician just had to poke his USB inside my netbook. The immediate effect I noticed was that Google Chrome started opening whatever link I clicked in a new tab, even though I did not press CTRL when clicking. Also, when I clicked the newly opened tab, it instantly closed. I noticed that pressing CTRL + Tab allowed me to swtich between tabs without them closing, so yay for me What was even weirder was that the virus/trojan not only affected Chrome, but also my desktop. I could no longer drag and drop to move files into a folder, and I can't move a single thing on my desktop (they'd return to their original place and not snap onto another grid/column/row).

Then I tried finding a solution, and came across two posts on Google support forums, describing the exact same problem as what I was facing (both were dated 2011):

http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/Chrome/thread?tid=67613fa3ec0a4204&hl=en

So here I am After running HijackThis, DDS, & GMER, the symptoms are finally gone (after running GMER, actually). It says the thing is a rootkit. But I'm not sure if it'... Read more

It creates a link!?Here is an example: Det. Steve McGarrettI just went and looked up Hawaii Five O, copied and then pasted that Det. Steve McGarrett that you see above into a sentence I was writing and it automatically created a link?It (links) happens with everything that I copy and paste into anything that I am posting!Problem is, when I copy the word from Google and post it, I have no idea where the link goes to?I don't understand why and I'd like to stop it?

Welcome to Seven Forums,

Have you checked your Outlook's Folder Size and see which one is taking up a lot space -Inbox, Sent items, etc.?
You may move large files to your Archive folder.

Also, have you tried compressing the .ost file?

Have you talked to your Network/Exchange Admin? He can set a limit on your Mailbox Quota in Exchange Server to prevent this. Each employee in our network is limited bet. 2 to 5gb max per User mailbox.

Is your copy of 7 from microsoft or 'other'?

I did uninstall the MyAdvantage program, but it didn't seem to help.

Thanks,
Brad.

I have Windows 2000 with the normal administrator id setup as well as one other. I logged in today and noticed I had no background which tipped me off. I tried my email program and it was asked me to set it all up. I then went into mydocuments and it was empty. So if I go into my drive and look at Documents and Setting I normally only had Administrator, AllUsers and my other ID motopsycho. Now I have the following....

Administrator
Administrator.Chris
Administrator.Chris.000
AllUsers
AllUsers.WinNT
motopsycho

Now if I go into just the regular Administrator I can see all MyDocuments, MyFavorites etc. but I seem to be booting up with the Administrator.Chris.000

I have a Seagate 250GB drive which is my master and it is partitioned into 3 drives (10GB, 100GB and whatever is left over for the 3rd). The windows2000 is installed on the second partition leaving everything else empty. I do have a WD 80GB slave drive that had windows2000 installed but I can't get it booted anymore so I just use it to pull off my old files whenever I need to. I have tried unplugging this drive and disabling but still the same effect on logon.

Any help would be great,
Thanks,
Chris

I am facing this peculiar problem since last 4/5 days. Whenever I log into windows, a new user "wobrsqqw" gets created which is of the type "Standard User". From the control panel, it can be easily deleted. But, if I restart again, as soon as I get into windows, the same user gets created again. Once, I renamed it and restarted and surprisingly no new user got created. As soon as I deleted it and restarted again, again it got created. What might be the possible reason behind this? Thanks in advance.

A:New user created automatically with each restart

Sounds like some kind of malware to me. Try running a full scan with your anti-virus software.
Download, install and run Malware Bytes Anti Malware (free version) and do a full scan.

Let them fix whatever they find. See if that helps.

Also run msconfig and check the Startup tab to see if there is anything starting there that looks suspecious or unusual.

Windows key + R, type msconfig and press Enter.

So one cool thing I liked about vista was that it switched (aka opened) the folder you just created. I know for some this was probably annoying depending on what you were doing but it fit my usage scenarios perfectly.
I am hoping it is nothing more than a registry setting but I haven?t been able to track it down, then again I don?t even know where to look.

Are you sure?

Hello Everyone - it's been a while since I posted here, so I apologize for any errors I may make.

I have a Dell Inspiron Core I5 Windows 7 SP1 PC with Norton internet security.

My question is: what are the rules that govern when the system will make automatic restore points. I've read several threads here, and there seems to be multiple opinions, from "every 7 days", when volume shadow copy is started, when task scheduler has proper triggers and no conflicting conditions.

My PC wasn't creating restore points automatically. I tried changing the Volume shadow copy to automatic. I added a new task under SR to start at 3:30 PM (as a test), I checked the box to wake computer for this task. The system created two restore points hours apart once, but none since then.

I've attached screen shots showing all my settings, including one that seems to indicate the task did run, but no restore point can be seen for that time. NIS did show the system at an idle state at the time the tasks should have ran.

So to sum it up, do I have my settings incorrect? Is there a glitch in my system? How often should SR create automatic restore points (aside from program updates)?

SR has bailed me out a few times and is quicker than restoring from a system image which I do periodically, along with a separate file backup.

Any suggestions, help, explanations, would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

A:System restore points not being automatically created

Is System Protection turned on?

System Protection - Turn On or Off

As far as how often Windows 7 creates restore points, Microsoft says: "Restore points are created automatically every week, and just before significant system events, such as the installation of a program or device driver."

I recently purchased an hp dv6 laptop running windows 7 home premium.
This is what i did with it till date:

1. Since it came with a big Windows patition (C drive) i used macrium reflect free edition to change C drive from primary to logical parition.
2. I then created 3 different partions for my data and other files.

Everything worked out fine untill few days ago i saw different partition formed all on its own. To my utter dismay it refuses to be accessed and does not show up in the disk management either! Although the partition does not take up any space. I thought of it first as a virus issue. So i scanned my computer with norton internet security (came with the laptop) but no viruses or malware was found.
I was frustrated so i did a factory reset from the recovery partition and found that the paritition was gone now. I then painfully installed the programs which were removed due to factory reset. Not to mention the time taking windows updates!

I thought that was it, but now its just been two days and the partition is showing up again.

I have uploaded the related screenshots. The partition formed on its own is th Q partion (last one).

I am really annoyed and dont know what else should i do. So i decided to seek help from this forum. I searched for a similar thread but could not find any.

Any help here would be really appreciated!

Hello Everyone!

I was advised to post my issue here after posting it on the General discussion page. I'm hoping that someone here can help me out! Please bear with me, as this post might be a bit long!

Summary:

I've been having an issue the last few days where a folder is automatically created whenever I have USB device, in this case, my external HDD is connected. I've tried numerous times to delete the folder, but it keeps being automatically created on it's own after its been deleted. It's been creating itself at random intervals (anywhere from a few mins to a few hours) while the external HDD is plugged in, and it will sometimes automatically be created as soon as the external HDD is unlocked (my external HDD Is password-protected).

Some background info:

I know that last week, I connected my niece's USB flash drive to my computer, as she wanted me to put some files on her USB flash drive for her. I know that once I connected her USB flash drive, I created a folder, named it, and started to move some files over to the folder I created. During that process, I noticed that empty My Docs/Pictures/Videos subfolders were being created automatically in the folder I had originally made on my niece's USB flash drive. I would delete the folder I created, but the folder would automatically create itself once again, with all subfolders intact. I ignored the issue, moved the files over to my niece's USB flash drive, and disconnected her USB flash drive from my computer.

if you create a c:\temp folder on the toshiba Satellite Pro C70-B-14X
then a file TecoACDC.csv is automatically created, (presumably by a toshiba monitoring tool)

This file contains power and voltage values, and is added to with current values every 2 seconds.
It would appear to be a bug, as the file only exists if the user creates c:\temp and the file keeps growing and growing.

This means that it eventually will use up lots of space.
Has anyone else seen this problem, or got a fix (apart from removing the c:\temp folder )
thanks.

To be honest described issue is not known to me and I think you are the first one who reposts about that
Maybe stupid question now but do you need this folder for some private stuff or for some additional installed software?
I mean, maybe you can use some similar folder name.

Hey guys, I plan to record PC gameplay using Fraps, which creates very large files. In order for me to do so whilst still maintaining high FPS in game, I have to record to my SSD. However, this fills up very quickly.

My idea is to make a program that automatically moves the recordings over to the HDD as they are created. Fraps has an option to split the recording up into 4GB segments, so what the program will need to do is detect when the second section has been created, then move the first across, then detect when the third has been created and move the second across etc.

Is this possible in an automated fashion? And if so, how would I go about doing it?

Thanks for any replies
Max

A:Program to automatically move files as created by Fraps

Ok, so I just had a quick play around with a .bat file and found that this works:

Code:
if exist "C:\Users\Max\Videos\Fraps\part2.avi" move /-y "C:\Users\Max\Videos\Fraps\part1.avi" "F:\Fraps\"
But I will need to implement it into a loop so that 'part2' and 'part1' change to 'part3' and 'part2' and so on within the code.

Also it will need to automatically check at a set frequency

I'll try my best to explain the problem i'm having here

I was just using my computer normally the other day when a message popped up along the lines of "your computer is running low on memory, please close programs etc..."

Now I only had my browser (Chrome) and a handful of tabs open at the time, so I thought it was weird. Even with many (20+) tabs open, itunes, excel and maybe word open, when I open the task manager, memory usage hovers around 40%-50%. Currently, I only have Chrome open with this tab and memory is at 85%, with Chrome being the highest usage.

When I close out, it still hangs around 80%.

This happened to me months ago and I don't remember what I did to fix it, it sort of just suddenly came around one day then it suddenly stopped, and now it't back again. Are there some hidden background processes that may be going on that's using my RAM? I have not been using my computer differently at all nor have I installed any new programs recently
