Help - no sounds in XP but sounds in media player

Q: Help - no sounds in XP but sounds in media player

I have recently re-installed XP home edition and now do not have any window sounds. I can get sounds from the Media Player and VLC media player. The sounds are enabled within sounds and audio device but do not play. My PC is a home build (not by me) Asus A8V-E Deluxe and it has been a real pig over the last few weeks and I am starting to pull out the last of my remaining hair in frustration.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hi all; I have a weird problem. My Dell Dimension 3000 Running XP bla-bla....had no drivers installed when I got it back. Had to download Ethernet driver on another computer to a flash drive. And get it up and running. The writable CD-Rom sounds fine {it has a different driver than the player only] I double checked the driver twice and it is the exact one. I even tried a different cd-rom device and it had the audio quality problem. It just sort of sounds like it's clipping.I don't know where to go next........HELP!

Windows Media Player sounds somewhat distorted but when I play music in the Zune player, it sounds fine. Why would that be? This would be on a new Dell Inspriron 530 desktop bought in June 08 with Windows XP Pro. Thanks so much.

Well idk how it happened but suddenly certain things especially voices are so quiet theyre almost silent. With video or audio with mp3 mp4 or wmv etc. My point is that its across the board all encompassing. Ive tried all the settings available for the computer, the players (MPC WMP and even iTunes), and my stereo. FYI the way its set up is that i have an input adapter that goes into the headphone jack on my tower then it all plays out of my stereo. Its not the problem tho because I have used that setup for like 5 years now without a problem. But so yea idk what to do. Please help. I can provide any information you need if u ask for it.

Ok so I have a simple, but annoying problem. I have no Windows Sound Events like the login sound, the logout sound, and when the battery is low. Every other sound like playing music and running YouTube videos work fine. Even when I turn on my laptop I hear the whole computer startup sound, but I don't hear the login one. I don't understand the problem. I went into personilazation and went to Windows Sounds, but when I select one and click "Play" I don't hear anything. I tried the other Sound Themes and they don't work either. I ran the Fix It program for Audio, and it didn't find anything wrong.

I've got a weird one: I hooked the HDMI from the PC to the television and get great picture, but the sound is weird. I get system "dings" and whatnot, but I don't get the audio from games or YouTube videos. I've already tried setting the default audio device to the HDMI port, but I get sound from the speakers on the PC, not via HDMI.

The video card is an EVGA 750 Ti SC, running on a Biostar HiFi A85W.

A:Get system sounds, but NO YouTube or game sounds. Help?

If you have the Default Audio Playback Device set as HDMI then you should be getting sound only from HDMI. Sounds like that is not happening.

You should have the NVDIA High Definition Audio and the regular PC audio (whatever that is) shown in the Device Manager, Sounds section. If you do not have NVIDIA High Defintion Audio, or only the generic Windows installed "high Definition audio driver (codec) shown for the HDMI audio that could be the problem.

Uninstall the Video Card, in the Device Manager (do not uninstall the drivers) then restart the PC and when Windows starts it will detect and reinstall the Video Card. See if this corrects the problem. If not, install or reinstall the latest NVIDIA driver.

i am having windows xp running on my pc , once i tried to change my startup sound by the local made software but cant happen. In result the Startup and Shut down Sounds are disabled on my xp. But the rest of the sound are playing fine. All the Error, menu , minimize, critical sounds are working. Can any one help in getting those two sounds back.

A:Only Startup and Shut down Sounds are not player !

Try: Control Panel- Sounds, Speech, and Audio Devices- Sounds and Audio Devices- Sounds- in the "Program Events" box scroll to "Exit Windows" and click on it. Below in the "Sounds" box click on the down arrow and find "Windows XP Shutdown.wav" and click on it. It should now appear in the box. Click on the black arrow to the right of the box to try the sound.
If OK go back to "Program Events" box and scroll to"Start Windows" and click on it. Back to "Sounds" box, click arrow, find "Windows XP Startup.wav": and click it. Check sound with black arrow as before. If OK click Apply then OK and exit Control Panel.
That should restore sounds unless those files were removed or corrupted by the other program.

Windows do not play any media files and more but I can hear the sound effects windows play (Critical Alarm, Windows Start-up, Windows Shut-down, ding, beep etc..) and also I can hear any sound/music, etc from Firefox browser.
I can also hear any music/sounds etc from games
the only problem I have is the media files.

Windows Media Player won't play any media file I throw at it the same problem happens with Media Player Classic Home Cinema (codecs are optional)
this has happened after I followed these guides:
Remove Favorites, Libraries, and Homegroup from Navigation Pane
Computer - Add or Remove from Navigation Pane

I clearly wanted and I still want to hide some items from navigation pane.
If you use it much some items are not needed and are bothersome if you have them.

So I hid Libraries and done everything as it says to remove Homegroup.

So what I have to in order for Media Players play media properly once again?

Except of Restoring everything as it was.

A:Windows do not play any Media Files (you can hear sounds though..)

    1. Go to device manager, find the audio device, and make sure it's enabled.

    2. Update your on-board audio device.

    3. Click on Start and type SOUND. Click the tab PLAYBACK. Right click to show Disabled and Disconnected devices. Make sure your speaker is Enabled. Right click on speaker and run Test. Should hear up and down notes. Double click on your speaker to bring up Speaker Properties. Go to tab Levels and make sure nothing is muted.

I've also gone to Sounds in the Control Panel but I haven't found anything specific on this.

    Hello! I am new to these forums, having registered to ask this question;
I am personalizing my new laptop(Cursor, wallpaper, screensaver, and other things), and I hit a snag.
I'd like to replace the windows sounds with SFX of my choosing, but I want to know what triggers them. The list gives each sound a name, and while some of them, such as 'Windows logon', 'Low battery alarm' and 'Device failed to connect' are fairly self-explanatory, a lot of them are rather difficult to understand, such as 'Asterisk' or 'Default beep'. There is no indication of what causes these noises other than the name, which is nine times out of ten simply unhelpful.

Can somebody please explain to me, one by one, each sound in the list, so I know what to replace them with?
Also, a while ago I replaced 'Open Program' with a sound, and it played sometimes for no discernible reason. Why did it do that?

    A:What do the sounds mean?

Im not going to list all the sounds and their meanings, and i don't know of such a list,
but what you could do is record you own voice, saying the win actions and replace the win sound with your voice, that way when *Astrix* plays you will hear yourself saying it then you will know what each sound is,

The open program will sound even when a program opens in the background, non visible.....
You could change this though, so that you know and allow specific programs to open.

Hi. Before you do anything ....run Malwarebytes and superAntiSpyware to make sure your pc is not infected..:
    SUPERAntiSpyware.com - Downloads
    Assume its OK....
Check and see if there is any update for the sound card from Manufacture and MS Auto update .
    Install vista codecs ...:

Free-Codecs.com :: Download Vista Codec Package 5.1.5 : With Vista Codec Package installed, you won't need to install any other codec or filter.

I have an HP with Windows Vista (SP1) and is up to date. Installed is a Realtek High Definition Audio sound card. I cannot get any sounds out of the speakers except when I configure the speakers and then the speakers work fine. I've tried playing mp3s with the zune software and windows media player. I can't get sound from any sound file on the internet either. Obviously the speakers are fine and are connected properly. They are not muted and I've tried doing a system restore. Perviously when this happened system restore and reboot restored the sounds.
    Any help is appreciated.

    A:No Sounds, please help

Have you set the new sound card as the default for playback? Check in Control Panel/Sound.

If you're talking about the changing the sounds associated with programs then the browse button should become active after you click on the sound you want to change.

Hi Radex and welcome to sevenforums

First we need you to fill in your system specs (in the lower left corner) adn second the screen shot is a bit small.

Could you be more specific about the sound problem? Have you installed the correct audio driver?

    Q: Sounds

Does Windows 8 have a waking from sleep or shutdown chimes or sounds? When it shuts down or wakes from sleep I get no sound. When I connect removable drives or play videos I get sound.

As far as I can see there is no sound option for waking from sleep or shut down. The only option is to play the Windows theme on startup.

I haven't been able to hear any sounds from my computer and I don't know what to do. The sounds come from my monitor's speakers and everything is plugged in correctly but I think that perhaps a hardware has been removed since nothing is working. What should I do?

    Thanks so much!!

Look in device manager for any yellow markers against any devices, it sound like you need to reload your audio drivers?

Without the knowledge of the computer model, Windows version and soundcard make, it's hard to be more specific.

I got a new computer its Hp a6414f with vista, my monitor is Hp w1707 built in speakers and i cant hear the sound when i play a video. i need help!!!

    A:No sounds!

control panel / sounds / set those speakers as default... reboot.

you can test other items thusly, like a headphone, to eliminate possible culprits.

download latest realtek audio drivers-- you'll need to run install twice in between reboots...
