Preventing XP Mode from creating a new virtual machine for each new user

Q: Preventing XP Mode from creating a new virtual machine for each new user

We are migrating several hundred workstations from XP to Windows 7 Enterprise. We have several legacy and internally developed applications that cannot run under Windows 7 and will be using XP Mode for them. This works well in a test environment. Some of the applications will not work in NAT mode, so bridged mode is required. Our issue is that several of the workstations are in a common area and used by many users. Each time a new user logs on to the host and launches an XP Mode application a new virtual machine is created in that userís profile which acquires a new, unique IP address from DHCP. This behavior introduces all sorts of problems, not least of which is the depletion of addresses in the DHCP scope. We tried putting the original VMC file in the Default user profile to no avail. Is there a way to prevent a new VM from being created for each new user so that all the users on a workstation will use the same virtual machine? Many thanks.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Last night when shutting down the virtual machine within Win7, the virtual machine hanged. Win7 gave me the option of doing a forced shutdown, which I accepted. But now this morning when I try to re-open the virtual machine (which is powered down) I keep
getting the error message "The virtual machine could not be started. An unknown error occurred."  PLEASE HELP: I have months of research stored in the virtual machine which I need to retrieve. Any suggestions gratefully received.

A:URGENT: My XP-Mode Virtual Machine has crashed: it is powered down and refuses to power up. PLEASE HELP: I have months of research stored in the virtual machine which I need to retrieve.

The issue could be incorrect configuration of XP mode.

I'm using an AlienWare M14 machine. I tried to create a virtual machine locally using Client Hyper-V on Windows 8 Pro, but it still doesn't work (took me a lot of time). I added the Hyper-V features in "Turn windows feature on or off", and all of the requirements to run Hyper-V are fulfilled (SLAT, BIOS, 64 bits, ...) (I attach the msinfo32 output in this post). At the last step in creating a virtual machine, it says "... General access denied error... (0x80070005)" (for details, check my attached image). I googled, tried some solutions but still no luck so far.

Thanks for any help.

After changing XP Mode's network adapter (in order to get port forwarding working), I found that I cannot access the internet using a browser anymore.

I went from Shared Network to Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller in the Virtual Machine settings, which broke its internet connection completely and gave the "limited or no internet connectivity" message. After going back to Shared Network, when loading any page in any of the virtual machine's browsers (Firefox, IE), the page would remain blank then time out after a while. However, pinging websites using cmd worked in the virtual machine. Using the 'repair' option in XP's Network Connections did not help. Disabling the firewall did not help either.

Also, the Windows 7 host machine's internet is working fine.

How do I fix this situation, without having to start anew with another virtual machine?

A:XP Mode virtual machine cannot access internet

If available, run system restore in XP using a point where Internet worked.

I've been using the XP mode on Windows 7 for a few years now and all of a sudden the last few times it's prompting me for a password to log in. Also it had a error message saying integration features not working. And the time it takes to start the Virtual Machine is very very long. What to do?

Noticed when closing the virtual machine it says "hibernating". Is that supposed to be that way?

I tried restarting the virtual machine several times but it still is asking for password.

I am unable to use XP Mode with either AVG or Avast installed.

It was working fine for years with AVG installed, then all of a sudden whenever XP Mode was used, I'd get a blue screen and the machine would reboot. I uninstalled AVG, XP Mode and Virtual Machine. Reinstalled XP Mode and Virtual Machine and it works fine.
As soon as I reinstalled AVG it did it again.

I've tried the same with Avast and the same thing happens.

Has anyone seen this before?

Hi All,

Is is possible to access the Internet from inside an XP Mode Virtual Machine, running on Windows 7 Enterprise 64 bit ?

Looking at the Virtual Machine Networking settings, I have a choice of three options for Adapter 1: "Internal Network" , "Shared Networking (NAT)" , and "Broadcom NetXtreme 57xx Gigabit Controller".

Looking at Network Connections inside XP Mode, it says the LAN or High-Speed Internet status is "Connected, Firewalled" (and Device Name "Intel 21140-Based PCI Fast Ethernet Adapter (Generic)")

But Internet Explorer inside XP Mode says "the page cannot be displayed. To attempt fixing network connectivity problems, click Tools, and then click Diagnose Connection Problems". I have tried ticking Automatically detect settings under Internet Options -> Connections -> LAN Settings.

Windows 7 ipconfig says IP address, subnet mask and default gateway

Inside XP Mode ipconfig says IP Address, subnet mask and default gateway I can successfully ping both and from inside XP Mode.

I can also successfully access "" from Internet Explorer inside XP Mode (because I am running Apache Tomcat on Windows 7).

Thanks for your time and advise,
Best regards,

I have a need to have like a virtual machine... not what you get when you see discussions about "Virtual Machine" software and functionality... but rather, When User X or Guest Logs In He goes to a seperate Partition or whatever... Just so the user sees none of the full administrators stuff, recent files, the auto fill stuff that comes up in like music, or images, or word docs etc... he will only see and have applications see what has happened on his area or partition... I am not opposed to having full duplicated OS and Programs on that partition if that is necessary... but when X logs in, he sees nothing but stuff on his partitions... Like I was looking for graphics for letterhead and invoicing for customer X with Customer X with me and some graphics for Customer Y popped up and Customer X should never have seen those ... Confidentiality... so when I was looking searching for the graphics ... the fill in complete whatever,,, feature popped up a filename that was obviously recognizable for Customer Y! That cannot Happen... I need to totally Segregate this stuff... Help. Under NT4 this was kinda easy but I have spent 9 hours scouring printed manuals and online sources and get everything but the simple things Ineed... Hey they do that at the public library even... I just installed windows 8.1 pro on an MSI z97 pc mate motherboard with I5 3.3 ghz processor, 16 gb ddr3 1600 MHz ram, with embedded realtek pcie gbe NIC. I checked and found that hardware virtualization is enabled by default in the BIOS.

I tried to set up a virtual switch using the latest bios and drivers from MSI. I created a virtual switch choosing the external option and the share with host OS option. I then connected to the VM. No network connectivity on VM but host still worked.

I then used autopatcher to update windows 8.1 on the vm. I removed and reinstalled the virtual switch choosing external option and share with host OS option. Same conditions occurred.
And then I installed the latest NIC driver. Same problem - media disconnected.

I tried this process with the latest driver from the realtek website which was a couple years more up to date. I had such high hopes! Same problem.

I then used msconfig to prevent all non-Microsoft services from starting and rebooted. I removed and recreated the switch and I was still hoping for success. Same exact conditions occurred.

These are the conditions that occur whenever an external switch with host os sharing enabled is installed in between all of these troubleshooting steps. It looks exactly the same every time...

Can someone explain the difference between these 3 programs?

A:Remote desktop, Virtual Machine and Virtual Box

Hi Jason6161 Two of these words are closely related, while the other one isn't.Remote Desktop is often a reference to the "RDP" acronym, which means "Remote Desktop Protocol", a protocol used by Microsoft Windows systems to remotely connect to another Windows system (or even other OS now). There's a nice little article on Microsoft website about, I suggest you to give it a read. If there's something you don't understand in it, let me know and I'll explain it to you.Connect to another computer using Remote Desktop ConnectionA Virtual Machine is like the state name, a machine that doesn't exist physically, it only exists virtually inside a system. It's the emulation of a system inside another system. So you could for example have Windows 8.1 installed on your computer, but using a program, create a virtual machine running Windows XP in it. To put it simply, it's running an independant system (guest) inside a system (host). Hi all
I am wondering if it is possible to prevent users from creating shortcuts. We have users locked down were they cannot get to the local C: Drive to prevent the machine from getting messed up. But they are creating shortcuts that allow them to browse Active
Directory. "C:\Windows\System32\rundll32.exe dsquery.dll,OpenQueryWindow" And while I cannot prevent them from reading AD, I want to prevent them from getting to the rundll32.exe file. At this point, they are creating shortcuts to get there. These
users cannot change anything in AD, I am just trying to prevent them from browsing it.
I would block the rundll32.exe file from being executed but with all the software we have, I am not sure what all it would break. Is it possible to prevent running specific rundll32 dll files?
Any advice in this matter would be great.

I've noticed that some applications (the only one I remember is Steam, but I think some Ubisoft game did it with 'Ubisoft Launcher') automatically create in- and sometimes outbound firewall rules (I'm talking about Windows 7 Firewall, not some 3rd party one) without any user interaction.

So the question is: how to stop them from doing that? Is there a way to allow only user (preferably Administrator) to create rules manually?

Thanks in advance

I've got a problem. I've been tasked with creating a lightweight build of Windows 10 to run in kiosk mode here at work. I've got kiosk mode running well, where the only app the user has access to is Internet Explorer (using a custom shell). However now I'm going through and trying to lock everything down to prevent the user from downloading and installing stuff, accessing C:\, etc.

I've enabled applocker and auto-generated all the rules. I did this for Executables, Windows Installer Files as well as Pre-Packaged Apps however I'm running into a problem. Even though I have all the rules for the pre-packaged apps set to "allow" for the administrators group, it still won't allow me to create new users (any more) when using the built-in Administrator account. When I go to 'Settings -> Users -> Create New User" the mouse wheel spins for a little bit and a window opens and closes instantly but that's all.

I ended up going into System32 Lusrmgr and creating a new admin account that way, but even after adding this new account to the admin group and signing out/in, rebooting, etc. this new admin account can't access any of the pre-packaged apps like the default Administrator account can.

If I am understanding AppLocker and the rules for the pre-packaged apps correctly, since I have all the rules set to "allow" for the "builtin-administrators" group, shouldn't my new admin account have full privileges? Also, why can't the default ad... Read more

Hi, critical one this for me and desperation is setting in.

I have an application to load and assess for work before the end of the week. As a new expensive app it is USB "dongle" protected. When I try to run the setup.exe to install it I get the following error word for word:

"SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\VirtualDeviceDrivers. VDD. Virtual Device Driver format in the registry is invalid. Choose 'Close' to terminate the application". That address is reported incomplete without HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\, and why is VDD displayed unattached to its address, or am I just being too paranoid? I am then offered Close and Ignore as options.

The entry under VDD in the registry is:

"VDD, REG_MULTI_SZ, C:\Progra~1\Symantec\S32EVNT1.DLL" presumably a Symantec NAV dll. Symantec's support system is of course no real help.

Not being a registry wizard. can anyone else offer any insight as to what is wrong here?

This machine had been working fine until the past month when it developed a strange practing of going through what I call machine code loops preventing the loading of Windows. There seems no rhyme or reason the the order of the screens or the means of exiting them, and the next screen is typically random.
It takes you through BIOS and various prompt screens randomly. Since each reboot since then had taken me on this journey I have dreaded the risk involved that I might not get my PC back into Windows at all, and hence have deferred rebooting it as much as possible. After an enforced shutdown it took me an hour yesterday to get it back and I feel action is needed!

The sequence is this: the reboot gets as far as a black screen with a faint image and "P5RDI-VM" which is obviously the Motherboard
"Press DEL to run setup or TAB to display POST BIOS message"
Neither button does anything at all. Neither does any of the Function keys or ALT, CTRL and DEL
If you wait 3 minutes the screen disappears on its own to be replaced by the BIOS screen.
I'm not an expert on the BIOS, but it looks ok (ish) so I escape
This leaves a blank screen with the message "reboot and select proper boot device, or insert boot media in selected boot device and press key"
I don't have boot media, but the injunction gives ammunition for a theory of mine I'll come back to later, although I have no idea if it is a sensible one.)

Hello everyone,

I am hoping someone may be able to help me with the following. I tried to use VMware's free "converter" software to convert my physical HP machine to a virtual machine. However, when trying to run the virtual machine, it says that the virtual machine has two processors & that it is limited to only using one processor, & therefore, will not start. The physical machine is a dual core processor, but I see no way to configure the virtual machine so that it only has one processor.

It seems to me the software should just configure itself to at least run, and from there a person can try to tweak the settings and be advised if there are limitations at that point, but that would make to much sense. Alternatively, they could provide an easy way to change the settings so you can at least get the thing to run, but again, that would make to much sense.

Anyway, if anyone can help me get the virtual machine clone running, please let me know.

I don't know if you ever solved your problem, I just joined the forum.
I had the same problem, but in my case it was directing me to update the keyboard driver.
Well, it turned out this problem has nothing to do with updating drivers!
I accidentally bumped into an article (Microsoft, I believe, can't find it anymore), listing the softwares which, when installed, cause this problem.
In my case, it was Adobe Fonts. The moment I uninstalled it, the machine started going into hybernate and / or standby, without any problems.
Sorry I can't find that article any more.
Hope this will help.

Does anyone know what this means or how to correct it?

A:Scsi/Raid host controller device is preventing the machine from entering Standby

It means that Windows doesn't know how to put your scanner (or more precisely the (virtual) SCSI controller) into standby.

As it says, install the latest drivers for the equipment from the original manufacturer. Also, in Device Manager, check the device properties and see if Windows is allowed to turn it off.

I have a Compaq desktop at home running Windows 7 Home Premium. My girlfriend has a user account on it that she uses from time to time. She sometimes needs to restart the computer. Is there a way to eliminate that option for her account or at least make Restart or Shutdown, without installing updates, the default choice? She is careful about changing the option, but I am concerned she might slip up one time.

I have no desire to upgrade to Windows 10 at this time (Yes, I know the free upgrade offer is supposed to end at the end of June). On my account, I manually go through the list of new available updates and remove any that are related to preparing the computer for Windows 10 or actually downloading and installing it.

I know you can lock down an AD account to log into a specific machine but can you lock down a machine to only accept certain user logins? We have some mission critical machines that only have the specific rights with certain ID's but the users keep insiting on logging onto them as their own ID thus making the app not work properly and the machine go whacky. I want to set it up to deny logins other than using the specified ID's they have been given already (and not their own user accounts).

Is there any way to do this other than limiting EVERY user account (since I only need this limit on like 2 PC's per site I have).

Thanks for any help. (yes I know about runas types of solutions I really would like to keep these PC's as clean as we can and not have other user profiles on them at all).

A:Lockdown user login on a domain machine to a specific user.

So I would assume these computers are attached to the domain, so their domain logins allow them to login to the computer.

Couldn't you use a combination of the local policies
Deny logon locally
Logon Locally

Both of them allow you to add a user or group to those local policy. I would think that if you deny the everyone group in the domain then set the users who are allowed to login in the other policy, that might work. I am not sure though. I would have to test it.

hey guys, its been a while..

Just need a bit of help in a few things setting up my new box for a dedicated sftp/web server. I've already installed apache2 and got that running, and also installed openssh on a ubuntu 9.04 system. Now, a few questions if anyone can help..

1) how do I create virtual users on an ubuntu system and integrate them to log into sftp?
2) how do I change the default path after those users have logged in to a particular path, say instead of "/home/$user" to "/var/www/" instead

I want to have a few users (or group if possible) to be able to access the var/www/ folder only since all they will be doing is just uploading/modifying/downloading files in that directory. The server will be mainly hosting files for download (with anonymous access given to download via a html link) and the uploading/etc to be done over sftp since its more secure than regular ftp connections.

I have looked around the net for a while now, and they don't give me a clear answer to this (probably since this is my first time setting up openssh, and i've only started to work in ubuntu regularly only quite recently) and other sites telling me to install vsftpd, proftpd etc.. which I prefer not to.

Thanks in advance.

Edit: I'm looking at two options - LDAP and PAM for the users.. any suggestions?

Edit2: Never mind, got a friend to show me how to do this on the *nix.

Hi this is my first post but I am really confused as to an issue with hyper-V

Whenever I go to open the virtual switch manager, it says; The operation on computer 'DESKTOP-V1A0142' failed: Generic error. Is there anyway to fix this. I have not yet created any switches because it won't let me.

A:Hyper-V error when creating virtual switch.

Hi Nukeproof, welcome to the Ten Forums.

First thing to check is that the Hyper-V Extensible Virtual Switch is enabled in your NIC's Properties:
If it is totally missing click the Install button and install, it, you'll find it under Protocol:
Install if needed, enable it and reboot and try Virtual Switch Manager again.

When booting up or after sleep mode my new notebook with Vista Home Premium has the following message come up: User Account Control Stopping Superantispyware.

Without switching off User Account Control, how can I have Superantispyware allowed to run without this message popping up and me having to click ok?

Windows Defender shows under "currently running programs" that some are "permitted", but Superantispyware is shown as "not yet classified". How do I get it permitted if this is where it is being stopped?

We have an application which will not run when executed from a standard domain user account as the UAC window pops up and prompts for an administrator password.

I can get it running when I make the user a local admin but we would like to avoid handing over so much control just to get this program running. It works fine on Windows XP but on Windows 7 SP1 64 bit systems we hit this issue.

I've done a lot of research on this issue and have been lead to 3rd party UAC tools but they look too dubious to have running on our domain computers. I've also been digging around secpol.msc around the User Account Control settings but I don't think the settings in there are going to give me the solution I'm looking for.

Ideally I'd want a way to disable the UAC prompts for this application and allow it to run as it would on XP without requiring administrator credentials (XP compatibility mode doesn't override the UAC).

Is there any way to automatically elevate the application so that it runs under local admin without requiring the user to enter admin details?

If anyone has experienced issues around this I'd be interested to know how to resolve them.

Just installed XP Service Pack 2. Everything seemed fine until I realized that upon bootup, I can only get into 2 of the 5 User Accounts I have set up. After successfully getting into the two of them (and they can vary depending on what I click on first and second), when I click Windows+L to quick switch and I click a third account icon, nothing happens. If I reboot, the cycle will repeat, allowing me to get into the first two accounts I try. If I don't find a solution, I'll wnd up backing out of SP2.

A:Windows XP SP2 Preventing Access to User Accounts

well the solution is simple uninstall SP2 and wait for SP2a or use the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard on xp and save all the settings for those account, you can then delete those account and re created then and use the files transfer wizard to restore the accounts get the idea ?

I have a laptop which is my main computer with Windows 8.1. My desktop has Windows 7. I was thinking about putting the beta version of 10 on a virtual machine on my desktop. But I read somewhere that it should not go on a virtual machine and that I should just install it over Windows 7 on my desktop. I'd rather not install it over Win7 so what's your thoughts on the virtual machine?
Thanks Frank

A:Virtual machine

I have Win 10 installed in VMs on several machines. Works great. Don't know where you read that it shouldn't be done as it's a great way to test out new OSes. You can use free software like VMWare Player, VirtualBox or even Virtual PC on Win 7 or Win 8. If you have 64-bit Win 8 you can setup a VM using the included Hyper-V.

Hi guys! I was planning on installing a virtual machine on my laptop for education purposes (I would be installing Linux, and learning how to use the command line interface)
I was just worried that since people say Virtual Machine OS's run slower than your real OS, that my specs wouldn't be enough or I dont have enough RAM. The laptop I will be installing it on has got:
CPU: I3 3110M
Would the virtual machine be too slow for me to be able to reasonably use?
(I didnt know where to post this, I thought there would be a sub section for just virtual machine questions, but I couldnt find it, I hope this is the right place.)

A:Virtual Machine

if your just looking to do command line why not just make a Linux bootable usb?

Sorry if this is the incorrect sub-forum.

I want to be able to boot a VM and have the OS set for the VM as an OS installed on my external hard drive. Now this external hard drive has a fully functioning, working OS with files/settings etc already installed. I would just like to be able to boot into it from a VM.

is this possible & how?

And the host OS that will be running Virtual Box is Lubuntu and the OS on the external drive that I want to boot is Win 10 64 bit

I have decided that I want to test out Linux and Windows XP (later is for nostalgia), and so I decided to download a VM called VirtualBox. The installation went fine, but it's this nex part that bothers me. I am afraid that I'll mess up and turn my Windows 10 to one of the above.
So what I need is to avoid this, but I don't understand youtube guides on how they do this. I'm afraid that downloading an ISO file might accidentally boot it on my harddrive, and not the virtual.
First things first, do anyone know where I can get a Windows XP (or maybe Windows 7 or 8 instead to use internet), and any Linux (don't know much about the various OS) ISOs?
Then, how do I proceed with installing them in my VirtualBox? I have already set up one for XP, but ofc it has nothing to boot up.
