Q: Touch Screen has stopped working on Dell Inspiron 15R-5537

My touch screen on my Dell laptop has not been working for over a year. I cannot recall if there was a specific update/change which triggered the touch screen to stop working, however it has now been over a year and I have no idea why it isn't working.

I have tried:
1. Restarting laptop
2. Troubleshooting hardware and devices
3. Disabling/enabling HID-Compliant Touch Screen driver (the driver only appears when I show hidden devices. I cannot enable it and when I try to update it, it says it is already up to date). Also, when I click on properties for the driver , it says "Currently, this hardware device is not connected to the computer. (Code 45) To fix this problem, reconnect this hardware device to the computer."
4. Uninstalling/reinstalling HID-Compliant Touch Screen driver. This results in the driver being completely deleted and does not return when I restart the computer.

I don't think I can do a restore as it stopped working so long ago, I wouldn't know what date to restore it to.

Tablet PC Settings are also saying that "No pen or touch input is available for this display"

About 4 days ago, my laptop keyboard randomly stopped working. I have never had issues with it in all 4ish years of owning this laptop, I did not drop it recently, spill a drink on it, etc. I was able to log into my computer perfectly fine but then after that it just completely stopped working. I was able to pull up the touch keyboard and I noticed that every time I'd turn caps lock on on the touch keyboard the light would light up on my actual laptop keyboard. That was the only sign of life coming from the keyboard and even that I could only control from the touchscreen keyboard. After that I searched around on the internet for a bit and tried these things:1) made sure I had the latest BIOS update (went through dell and downloaded the most recent driver for it)2) I tried cleaning the keyboard and removing/reconnecting it to the laptop. 3) I tried restoring my laptop to a previous version from about a week ago, before the most recent update since this problem started happening.4) I messed around with the sticky keys, languages settings, etc. None of it worked5) I uninstalled the keyboard drivers, turned off my laptop, and let windows reinstall it. Something I saw as a common fix online 6) I went through the dell online support program they have. I even did a restoration of the whole computer and the touch screen hasn't started working. I started having issues when I checked into the Device Manager and noticed that under Human Interface Devices the HID Touch screen (along with a few under it) were marked as "hidden". When I did the restore I thought it would fix the problem but it only seemed to completely get rid of it?
Instead of it being marked as hidden the only things I have under Human Interface Devices is the two options for Airplane Mode Switch. 

There is no touch so Calibrate isn't effective
The pen and touch option keeps saying it is unavailable
Turning it off and on doesn't work

The laptop has vertical lines of dead pixels running across the screen and I want to get the LCD replaced. Now the non touch screen model of this laptop has a Full HD variant (1920x1080) as opposed to the standard 1366x768 WXGA HD display while the touch models only come with the WXGA HD LCDs. Can I replace the LCD of my touch screen model with the FHD one? I have been able to detach the digitiser from the LCD itself and have the hinges and screws so I would assume it would be a simple case of changing one LCD with the other. The replacement touch screen models all come with the digitizer and hinges attached which is not something I require so it would be easier (and cheaper!) if I only got the LCD replaced. Lastly, if this is possible, do I need to purchase any additional cables? You're going to need at least the FHD wiring harness:
the screen
and the bezel
You may or may not be able to re-use the back cover/hinge assembly - usually these are different between non-touch and touch versions.

the touch screen on my 3147 stopped working. Has been fine up till now with no issues. I have made sure all the drivers are up to date. Does anyone have an idea how to fix this? Is there some setting I've messed up or missing?

Try the steps below and let us know if issue persists.
1. "Press Windows" key +"C" to select the search option
2. In the search box type "Device Manager" and click on it.
3. Select the "Human Interface Devices", in that right click on "HID-compliant touch screen" and select "Uninstall"
4. It will display the warning message "you are about to uninstall this device from your system" click ok
5. Restart your computer and the driver should install on its own.
Check for the functionality and let me know if issue persists.

Hi There,
I bought Dell Inspiron 13 5368 2-in-1 a few months ago, the laptop was one of my favorite laptops ever, hence, I was using it heavily.
Sadly, the touchscreen stopped working suddenly without obvious reasons. Everything else is normal. I checked the screen or the laptop for any possible physical damage but I could not find anything. the screen is working totally fine but the touchscreen functionality is dead.
I reinstalled the device drivers without success. I have also checked the power management options and did the diagnostics.
I don't prefer to send the laptop back to dell because all my applications and files are in this laptop. 
Could you help me out find the problem, its driving me nuts :/

I used the support tool on Dell's site to update drivers etc. Everything worked fine until I updated the BIOS to A09. The touchscreen stopped working after that. I downgraded back to A06 but the touchscreen didn't come back. I'm currently at A09.
Any suggestions?

So out of nowhere, my 7737's touch screen has stopped responding to touch.  Mouse works just fine.  Device manager has the monitor driver listed as a "generic PnP monitor", which sounds suspicious... and under Human Interface drivers, there is nothing listed for touchscreens, just airplane mode ***...  I have restarted, driver updated, etc. to no avail.  Any ideas?

i had this problem before but it used to be with sleep problems also but now its only shutdown not working although i did
1- remove all the drivers for video cards AMD and Intel and installing them in the order of dell drivers as been told and still not working
2- remove Intel Rapid Storage driver and still the problem exist
now i went and downloaded the drivers again but the video drivers are not working the Intel drivers say that my laptop doesn't meet the minimum requirements and when i installed the AMD it made problems with my AMD and  my Intel driver i dont understand how could that be
im really getting sick and tired of this i wasted a lot of time on this and the problem is old problem not new and yet dell useless as always never put a permanent solution for this
i also contacted Dell and they say they dont support outside US

Hi everyone,
Before going to Dell service (since, for some reason, while being a top device owner, I cannot use Dell's email support), I'd want to ask if anyone else has/had any problems with touch screen.
System specs - 4k touch display, SSD 512, RAM 16G, Core i7 7700HQ.
Symptoms - out of the blue touch screen stopped working in the middle of the day (no prior reboots, not drivers updates, no software intall). I was simply using it to draw some stuff - and display stopped responding to touches.
I've checked Device Manager - touch device driver is there, no problems. Did reboot, did USB device checks, did Dell's online hardware check, did disable/enable touchscreen device - no results. The touch screen stays dead.
Last drivers update was done a few weeks ago (Intel HD Graphics video drivers to fix system freezes).
Did anyone have this? Any known fixes?

Not sure if this is the problem or not but found a post where someone had the same problem and they found that the wire for the touch screen that goes to the motherboard was burnt. Something else to look at:

Sorry if I have managed to post this in the wrong area; first time in the forums.
I have an Inspiron 15R 5537 that I purchased around Christmas time I believe. It has worked perfectly until about three weeks ago. I set my laptop down on a bed and came back within a few minutes to find my screen looked very different then when I left it. The screen had become very pixelated and the colors were highly saturated. It seemed like the contrast had been completely turned up on my screen, and yet when I checked the graphic settings, everything is at the default settings.
No, water was not spilled. The heat in the room was a normal 60 degrees in my house.
I have no other ideas on how to resolve the issue.
Please, any ideas are welcome.

If you set a running notebook down like that, it very likely overheated - you blocked the cooling vents on the bottom of the system.  The video chip likely was damaged as a result.

Dell inspiron 5559 HID-complaint touch screen is not working. I have to keep it disabled because all of a sudden it starts to sense different touches uncontrollably. Sometimes it works just fine for a day, but it keeps happening. I disabled my Touch Screen driver few weeks ago. And now i wanted to enabled it but it says
"Currently, this hardware device is not connected to the computer. (Code 45)
To fix this problem, reconnect this hardware device to the computer."

Hi Guys,
Good Morning, I updated my Dell Inspiron 15R 5537 Laptop from Windows 8 Pro to Windows 8.1 Pro by using Store Application.
After Waiting for almost 6 hours, Update was done and after Windows setup, Display was black, Cursor was blinking.....I checked in Microsoft website and i found that not only me and many Dell customers are facing the same issue. i was luckily able to boot to safe mode and i uninstalled the both of my video drivers and i am back to my windows 8.1. After i update my video drivers as mentioned in the link below, still my screen blacks out. So i had no other option than resetting my pc to windows 8 pro.

After so much for research, I was able to figure it out the problem is because of Intel Video Driver. There is a beta Intel video driver package which supports Windows 8.1. Try to update that package and post your results. As i have already rolled back to windows 8. It will take atleast 4-6 hours for me to update the status. The touchscreen has been working for a while now. The device manager does not show "HID-compliant touch screen." Going into "Show hidden devices" shows a faded HID-compliant touch screen hidden, with no disable function.

The greyed out entry represents a device not currently connected or not functioning.
Touchscreens are probably USB devices so you might check those.  My system uses a Input.inf file as the setup for the touchscreen, but I have a different system from yours.

My Inspiron 15r 5537 touchpad is not showing in device manager, control panel and task bar.this happened when I switched my laptop from window 8 to window 7. i again reinstalled window 8 but the device manager just shows the regular mouse and no touch pad.It is awful not to have the gestures as it makes browsing too much difficult.there is no app or software to configure touch pad or gestures. the normal touchpad is operating okay but gestures are not working and there is no option in control panel to manage or set touchpad i have searched using the search option and manually.

My Ideapad S415 touch screen has suddenly stopped working.  I've had a tech connect to my PC and try a BIOS reload of default settings, plus unistalling all "HID" devices in Device Manager with no resolution.  I've also tried a system restore with no luck. The system properties does see the touch capability. Suggestions? Thanks.

     (If the battery is removable)
            Remove AC and Battery and hold the power button down for 15 sec.
               Turn the computer back on and see if the Touch capability is now detected under System Properties,
                  If not

This is the second time this has happened on my laptop (last time was about 9 months ago)

My touchpad is nearly impossible to use, the mouse either doesn't move, moves erratically or just clicks on its own. I've tried uninstalling the driver, but even in Ubuntu the exact same problem is happening.

I thought it was possibly some GT85 (an oil/cleaning product) on the touchpad, since I used it after cleaning my bike. I've used a bit of lemon juice and also a touch of washing up liquid to try and remove any oil on the touchpad, but this doesn't seem the be the problem.

Last time the problem just randomly disappeared.

I purchased my computer and all my software with Dell. I purchased an Inspiron 7000, 17" Laptop, with premium support, accidental Damage, max warranty,  Microsoft Office Suit, and Adobe Photoshop  with Elements 13.  The first "version" of my computer was working 100% perfect with no problems. It got accidentally knocked off the table and the prong inside the computer got bent. The power cord couldn't properly charge the computer anymore. I called Dell to have them fix ONLY the power cord and prong, nothing else was wrong with my computer. I got a phone call from Dell about a week after I turned my computer in. They said the repair is taking longer than the expected. I asked why, they said because they are waiting to located at another facility a part for my harddrive.  I was shocked when they said anything about my harddrive nothing was wrong with it and I did not turn my computer in to have the harddrive fixed. They brushed it off never gave me any reason why they were even touching my harddrive!!  After several phone calls/ time / and headache later they offered to send me a refurbished computer 2 months later. That was the best they could do because they could not locate the part they needed for my harddrive.
(Keep in mind my computer "type" is still active on Dells website and is Dells #1 best selling computer, How do they not have the part??!!!

I purchased Dell inspiron 15R 5537 about a month ago and since yesterday I am experiencing a problem. at times there are 11 dull spots at equal horizontal distances starting from the start menu icon towards the end of the task bar and then it becomes ok by itself. Whereas the rest of the screen is perfectly fine.

The problem started initially when the screen went dim on its own leaving dull spots, I restarted my laptop 2-3 times then, initially the screen remained ok and then the screen went dim suddenly every time. After a while the screen became ok .

Today when I switched on my laptop, the spots/shadows remained in line on the dell startup till the loading of the windows. The problem didn't go even after restarting it 2-3 times. Then I ran the startup diagnostics and during the diagnostics the spots were there but they disappeared during the test.

How to resolve this problem permanently, I am a bit worried.


It feels like the power on the screen gets low or something which causes this to happen. it happened again. I closed the lid and then opened it again and the problem is gone. Have you got any idea what could be the problem? Is it a problem to worry?

I have a 2 year old Dell Inspiron 5537. Recently I was having some issues with my OS (Windows 10), so I took backup and reset it from Windows 10's own option in the settings. This model came with original Windows 8.1 which I upgraded to Windows 10 and it did not come with any physical installation media. Now during the reset, the laptop shut down while the reset was at 90% due to the fact that I had taken out the charger and let it run on battery power (you can do this by disabling the battery device from device manager -why i did this? Because my charger was not working). Now when I turn on the laptop it goes to the Dell screen, stays for few seconds, shuts down and again repeats the same cycle. I am fine with reformatting it again but I am confused as to how I can retrieve the original OS without the installation media. Will going to a Dell service centre help me get my OS back for free (Dont want to shell out cash for something I have already 'bought' once before) Please help me out. Any responses are really appreciated. :)

Hai all, 
        I recently purchased a Dell Inspiron 15r 5537(i5-4200,8 gb ram, 2 gb Radeon 8670m ddr5, 1 tb HDD) and i've had numerous problems with the same. Any suggestions are welcome. Thanks in advance. 
First of all, the pc takes like 25 seconds or so to boot up. After the DELL emblem, I get a blank screen for like 10 seconds (Sometimes a "Please Wait..." msg appears.) Even after I enter the pin, there is a lag of 2-3 seconds before the "Welcome" note appears. The lag continues even after booting (windows and programs are slow in loading). I tried disabling Startup programs and updated video drivers with no result.
Secondly, every time the pc goes to sleep, it doesnt resume normally. The power and wifi lights are turned on but the screen remains blank. If i turn off wireless, the light goes off so the computer must be ON but without display. And then i have to do a hard boot.

When I turn on my 4-year-old laptop from sleep mode, it won't turn on until I pop the battery out and put it back in. Should I replace the battery? I'm having no other problems. I always work with it plugged in to AC.

My laptop does not start up, showing up a black screen with 4 beeps, and as this means a memory issue I tries a few steps
- Tries removing both the Rams ( 2 x 4GB) Then 2 beeps turn up.  This generally does mean Motherboard is good.
- Tried interchanging the rams,  this time I don't hear any beeps, but still the same issue blank screen.
- Tried with one ram at a time (both slots and both rams) vice versa. Same 4 beeps.
- Tried with a new single 8gb ram(both slots) ,  still in vain (4 beeps)
Please suggest me, what should be done and what is the problem with. Much needed help.

I am having problem with the audio of 5537 dell laptop. When I played music, there was no sound in speaker. When i plugged two different headsets, there was still no sound. But when i lowered the volume to 50%, there was sound with buffering, and with occasional noise. Then I lowered further to 10%, the sound was clear.  When i removed the headset, plugged into jack again, there was sound static frequency like ssssssss....... and at this time of posting, the clear audio is gone, now with lower volume there is creeping noise and distorted music. But not all was that. I performed EPSA, i listened to no sound over speakers (in the pre-boot test). That might seem speaker problem, but that would be okay, since the speakers can be replaced. The problem is why it produces sound to the lowest volume in headsets? I have updated, reinstalled, then performed twice this task, got nothing. It seems there is hardware problem. What guys do you suggest?

Running Windows 10, 8GB of RAM, 1TB of HDD
Bios (DELL Inc A08 4/30/2014
Bios mode UEFI (secure boot deactivated)
For the last 2-3 weeks my laptop has boot issues. From a regular start or a reboot!
It can take 30 secs to see the DELL logo up to 2-3 hours... YES up to 2 or 3 hours before the DELL logo appears. In average I would say 25 to 45 mins before the DELL logo appears. After when the DELL logo appears it boots correctly in Windows 10 and the laptop does not look to have any performance issues.
All of this started when the DELL system detected that newer hardware drives were available and a newer BIOS A09.

Installation of the new drivers for the hardware were completed without any issue. Laptop rebooted and final confirmation was given that new drivers were installed successfully.
Then I did the BIOS. The EXE started... showed me on the screen that my current bios was A08 and that the new one to be installed was A09. A command prompt window opened requesting asking if I wanted to proceed and type Y. Saw a % on the screen of the "flash" process and then the laptop rebooted. And I waited... and waited... more than 1 hour and still nothing. Blank screen. Power light on... HD light flickered and stopped. I waited 30 more minutes and I pressed the power button. I am looking for some help with a BSOD.  My laptop is about 2 years old and I don't even use it that often.  Primarily only to pay bills and do some minor online shopping.  I turned it on this morning to pay some bills and right after it finished booting up it went right to the BSOD. I've recently run avast virus scans and malwarebytes anti-malware scan and they have come up empty.  Can someone help me look into this?

my daughter has a dell inspiron one19 touch screen pc,
now i had to reinstall windows 7 due to a fault on hard drive (kids will play) and i've managed to find all drivers apart from the touch screen driver.

I just got a Dell 15R 5537 (on 29th September 2014) and when the laptop is on or off, the LED indicator on the front of the PC doesn't light up. What is the matter? do i need to get it replaced?

Hi Jason,
The LED light indicated below only illuminates when AC adapter is connected to the system and is charging the battery.

If the light is not illuminating when the AC adapter is connected to the system then I would suggest you to try flashing the BIOS on the system. Please enter your service tag # on the link below, select the operating system, and then download the BIOS from the BIOS section onto the system and install it.

Few months ago I updated to Windows 10. I've upgraded memory in my laptop Dell Inspiron 15R 5537. I've installed 2 sticks CRUCIAL CT102464BF160B. As I see it must be compatible with my laptop. But after that my laptop started to fall into BSOD. What should I do now?

You may be using and earlier version of  Dell System Detect. ,You can uninstall the current version and download a newer version of Dell System Detect. Below are some links that will provide information on uninstalling and reinstalling the latest version.

Description: Dell System Detect application and its DSDTestProvider root certificate had similar characteristics to eDellRoot certificate that was installed on Dell PC's. With Dell System Detect (DSD), the customer downloads the software proactively to interact with the Dell Support website so we can provide a better and more personalized support experience. The support certificate in question was designed to make it faster and easier for our customers to get support. The certificate unintentionally introduced a security vulnerability.
The application was removed from the Dell Support site immediately and a replacement application without the certificate is now available. We are proactively pushing a software update to address the issue and have provided instructions to remove this certificate.
Impact: The impact is limited to customers who used the "detect product" functionality on our support site between Oct. 20 and Nov. 24, 2015.

Hi, can anyone help me please?

My Inspiron 15R 5537 laptop suddenly went to "checking media: fail" after running diagnostics twice it said my hard drive had failed. I ordered a new Hard drive from Dell which I have just installed, but all I'm getting is "checking media: fail" again, then "no boot device. Press any key to reboot the machine" and it's looping like this. I have run a diagnostic that says everything is ok!? Any ideas anytine?

My HP Pavillion laptop touch screen stopped working several months ago and I have not been able to fix it. I have gone into the device manager as I have seen on other forums and my touch screen didnt even show up under human interfacing. How can I get my touch screen to work again without having to take it in? I am not super tech savvy. I don't recall doing an update before it stopped working.

Hi friends,New to the forum, and I'm hoping someone has a solution for me. I have been having an issue with my touchscreen... it doesn't respond at all. It had been working, and while I don't know exactly when it stopped, it's not working now.
