Files get randomly CORRUPTED! Hash mismatch, but they *mostly* work. Advanced tests

Q: Files get randomly CORRUPTED! Hash mismatch, but they *mostly* work. Advanced tests

I just found this forum and registered to join this community and further participate in it! Seems pretty big... ;)

Anyway, I have quite a problem in my PC that is *literally* taking sleep time from me. The thing is that files randomly get corrupted! Let me explain...

Some time ago (a month aprox.) I detected that the Linux ISOs I downloaded from BitTorrent (using latest uTorrent client) downloaded corrupted. I.E.; the file would complete OK, and then, let's say it was a RARed file, when unpacking it would give a 'CRC error' on it. After some days, I tried going back to uTorrent and 'forcing a recheck'; then it would rehash the file, and the 100% file from before would be completed to 99.7% (for example) now. Redownload; file unpacked OK.

That was the first stage. All these images I downloaded I had to do the same for them. No big deal (for now), until I reformat again and I thought it would fix by a fresh installation of Windows.

Now, the real problem here began when I copied an Acronis True Image .TIB file from my laptop to my desktop, via ethernet cable. I copied it, burned it on a DVD (in my desktop), and then found that ImgBurn would fail the Verify stage. I said..: 'well... it SHOULD still work.'. Then, I went to Verify the image (file) with built-in Acronis verify function. Guess what? It failed that verification too! The files was corrupted! First gross check I did, the file has the same bytes size in the laptop, desktop and DVD. (At that stage, I didn't know what I was going into...!)

The fact was that in the laptop, the file would verify OK with Acronis (it was OK there). So, I tried recopying it (again, over the ethernet cable) to my desktop. Burned. Corrupted again. Neither ImgBurn or Acronis would verify OK the disc image / file . Right there I started to worry...

I went and burn an image of a DVD video disc I had from quite some time ago, and ImgBurn would fail the verification too! The funny thing here, is that the movie still fully played; and also the Acronis Image would mount as a virtual unit, from which I could extract files from, and those files would work OK too! For example, EXEs from installations programs, would install the apps OK! How can that be!? Maybe "a Bit" was corrupted, and thus fail verification but mostly "work OK"? Shouldn't they be totally useless files?

At that point I still thought, "well, maybe a virus / windows service / whatever is messing here, will reformat and fix". Well, that wasn't so.

I reformated, installed a fresh Windows, antivirus (NOD, Kaspersky, Antivir, Prevx), full scanned with them. Spybot full scanned to. Hard disks "chkdsk" with all the parameters to fix bad sectors, unmount, etc. Still tried to copy the original (UNcorrupted) TIB image file from the laptop, and even from the CD, and it wouldn't still pass the validation!

So, I started to think about "bigger" corruption here. I went and downloaded "HashMyFiles", a great free app to hash files! Runned it in the laptop, and in the desktop and... THEY WERE DIFFERENT! The hashes didn't match! So THAT was it I said! Now, I tried with smalles files (200 MB), and they were the same hash in both locations! Tried with 600 MB and the hashes were different!

Again, and to further find what could be going wrong here, I booted from outside Windows, with Acronis True Image boot disc (which runs the same app that in Windows, but boots from a standalone CD), verified the image file over the very same DVD that restores and verifies OK in the laptop, AND IT STILL WOULD FAIL! OMG IT WOULD FAIL EVEN WHEN BOOTED FROM A DVD OUTSIDE WINDOWS, WITH THE TOTALLY SURE 100% UNCORRUPTED FILE! ***???

That's where I lost it. Now it isn't a Windows problem anymore. Even tried switching IDE channels and all the process would still fail. So it's not the cable neither.

What most troubles me now is... every app works perfect, Windows works perfect, drivers, internet, everything. And the computer corrupts files "as it wishes" and nothing crashes? How come everything still works? I really don't see where is the seed of the problem here. The motherboard if broken? Then again, if something so sensitive as a corruption to a file happens all over 3 HDs, how come everything still works flawlessly?

As you can see, I'm quite desperate and don't know where to turn or what to try at the moment. Please help me find a way to fix this. Any question, suggestion, whatever is more than appreciated! BTW, I'm running it in MS Windows XP SP2

Thanks in advance guys.

Preferred Solution: Files get randomly CORRUPTED! Hash mismatch, but they *mostly* work. Advanced tests

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

A: Files get randomly CORRUPTED! Hash mismatch, but they *mostly* work. Advanced tests

HI again.

An update... I changed the mobo to a Soyo 6VBA133. The memtest program was giving random errors (sometimes completed OK, sometimes with errors), and so I changed the mobo plus I bought all new memory modules. Here's the thing: it's still the same. Errors come in memory with Memtest86.

Prior to changing the motherboard I left running Prime95 for 24 hours without a hitch, so I'm assuming that the processor is OK too.

Oh, and I also bought a brand new ATX power source.

Men... I just have no words for this.

Please help, thanks

Hi, well there is an error (0*c0000005) which pops up every time i try to install a new app and also pop up on regular basis for a antivirus program i use. so i go through sfc scan to deal with this. sfc scan shows the
following result :  "windows resource protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them."
so i go to the SFC details to check the corrupted files and i found multiple files which says:
1) cannot repair member file
2) could not reproject corrupted files
On the end of both these lines following text was written: "Hash mismatch"
what should i do now?
Somebody help please!

Hello, i am new here to seven forums, not sure if this is the right thread i should be asking in, but never know till i try. Anyhow, I am playing a game called Aion, and my Ping in that game is around 70~100Ms.

When i did a speed test to where the server was roughly located it said my ping was 14Ms - http://speedtest.net/result/1871105926.png

I use Verizon fios, 25/25 speed plan, a MI424WR Router, that was provided, and a wired connection.

*Also i do not have any FPS Lag, i am getting 50-60 frames.
*And i have leatrix latency fix installed, version 3.00

Could anyone please shed some light on my issue here? Would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance.

A:Ping mismatch between speed tests and actual in-game.

Hi Condiments and welcome to W7 Forums

Lots of factors come into play when it comes to Ping times. Firstly, remember that the value that you get at any particular time is what it is AT THAT TIME, i.e. Ping is a dynamic variable. Secondly, it depends on the load at both the destination server and any intermediate servers in the path between you and it - in other words, the more players connected the greater the load. Thirdly, your time of day and how many others are sharing your line (the contention ratio). Unfortunately, most of these are beyond your control (except, perhaps, the time of day that you choose to play). You could try logging out of the game and logging back in again, to see if by doing that you get any improvement (possible, if a different route between you and the game server is established).

Hello fellow nerds and techies, I have a problem only you can solve! My knowledge too often seems to flee when the weird and the awful rear their ugly heads.

Here is the problem:
I work at a restaurant, and our event coordinator was working on some files on her computer in Excel. She also had two IE windows open. She minimized Excel, revealing the desktop, which she says began to "freak out". Random desktop icons were highlighting and un-highlighting (selecting and de-selecting) on their own. Im not sure what else happened, but the result is that many important files are lost, and some are changed.
For example an Excel file (probably the one she was working on) was duplicated as an *.htm file, keeping most of the data intact, but not the input data (the numbers that were entered into the formulas). This file is one of the few that hasn't disappeared, but in the Excel version of this file, the input data was erased, just as it was in the *.htm version.
Other files are completely gone from what we can tell. She did two system restores, hoping to retrieve data, but I know that that doesn't touch documents and files usually.

I ran a search in C: for the files that appear to be lost, but to no avail.

Anyone have any idea what happened or how to retreive the lost files?

Hey there Thanks in advance for your time and help.
The specifics of my problem involve strange dlls trying to run on startup,my "teatimer" contantly reporting registry changes(which i usually deny)
My interent sometimes cuts out though restarting my modem seems to solve the probelmmy computer tells me it can finda new i.p adress)
And most annoyingly my friends tell me when i send files over msn they are corrupted and wont send yet i can use them on my own pc except in some different cases.for instance i use music production software and when i load samples, mp3s or wav files in them, e.g Guitar rig 3 they play in a strange warbly distorted manner. yet when i open them windows media player they work fine.

OMG, I have so many questions that are killing me! and mostly they are related to mp3's! Please answer these if you have enough knowledge!

1. If I download music (by payment) on the internet, can I choose which format/bitrate I want it in? And can I choose lossless .wav format? I don't buy music online.

2. What are these numbers followed by the word Hash? What are these things?

3. What are these things - when I check the properties of an mp3 in it's comments/description tag, I often see numbers and letters in groups like this: http://img405.imageshack.us/img405/1835/commentsordescriptionxx6.jpg

On friday I was installing a wireless network in my office. I installed driver, and installed the little pci slot receiver thing and then in setup the pc froze up and crashed, and says windows/system32/config file is missing or corrupted.

The problem is that Im not sure what XP is on the system, oem or retail and I have no setup discs.

I was thinking of this and a few others say it may work but i'd like your opinion. I remove the HD from the work PC and take it home. I then install the work HD in my Home PC as a Slave. Then I copy the system 32/config file from my home pc and then paste it into the work HD, overwriting whats listed as corrupt.

You guys think that will work? I have lots of important stuff on the HD i cant really afford to lose

Okay, my trouble began on Sunday night, when there was an instance of me having to force reboot the computer. I turned it back on, chkdsk wanted to run and I circumvented it.

So, later on Sunday night or Monday night I keep getting speech balloon warnings telling me things like

"C:\Documents and Settings\(My Name)\Local Settings\Application Data\Opera\Opera\Cache\sesn\opr01H30.tmp is corrupted and unreadable. Please run chkdsk"

I've been getting the same warning for other tmp files on the Opera browser sesn folder as well.

Then, on Monday, I started getting error messages telling me that

"C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\EENGINE\EPERSIST.DAT is corrupted and unreadable. Please run chkdsk"

So, first off this morning I ran a scan for viruses. No viruses were found, so I tried running chkdsk. At first it would run in read only mode and told me there were disk errors but wouldn't fix them. I then performed the other chkdsk method by going into My Computer, right clicking the hard drive, selecting Tools and then clicking both options to scan and repair errors.

It then told me it couldn't unless I rebooted the computer, so I did so. Many attempts at reboot it wouldn't run chkdsk and now, upon more recent attempts it does begin to run chkdsk but then it abruptly stops with something saying it cannot open the directory or something like tha... Read more

It's probably a sign.

Anyway, ever since a couple of days ago when I go to press shift + 4 i don't get any dollar sign, same as with the hash sign on 3 on the number pad on top of the keyboard. A:The dollar sign button and hash don't work anymore? Lol.

If possible try the keyboard on another computer or try another keyboard on your computer - easier to rule out the keyboard then doing a lot of software changes.

But if the keyboard physically works then try uninstalling or installing the Logitech keyboard software.

I use Netscape Navigator 4.78 from time to time and recently noticed a goodly amount of "hash" files in the program folder. There are 545 files numbered in hex as hash255025 - hashd69855. Each of these files is 61 Kb in size and a hex edit reveals maybe they are involved in certificate ID or maybe security? Are these for SSI or CGI use? I have moved them out of the program folder into a holding folder and see no degredation in performance, but I am not much of a Netscape user so perhaps I missed something.

Does anyone know the reason for these files?
I am running Win98 with a P III.
[email protected]

A:Hash files in Netscape 4.78

I don't know anything about "Hash" files, but I did find the following here. I hope it helps.
Why do I have hash files all over my desktop?
A bug in earlier versions of Netscape (mainly 4.0x) causes it to 'dump' the contents of its security database. When Windows finds these files, it stores them as hash files on your desktop. You may see the name "Thawte" because this database contains the Thawte CA root keys. The solution is to install a newer version. You can then delete the hash files, which should not reappear.

Hey all!

I'm just wondering, would it be a bad idea to use a hash function to locate duplicate files? What do you think?

Say you have about 100'000 files and 4000 folders on F:\ and you suspect that there are some duplicates of these files stored on the G:\ drive. Wouldn't it be enough to just generate SHA-1 digests for each file on F:\ and G:\ drive, and then just compare them to see which ones match?... wouldn't that give you a complete picture of which files are duplicates and which ones are not? Could this approach possibly yield in some false positives?...

Let me know what you think.

no DMP file included try this way

If you wish to have others assist you with your computer's BSOD symptoms, upload the contents of your "\Windows\Minidump" folder. The procedure:

* Copy the contents of \Windows\Minidump to another (temporary) location somewhere on your machine.
* Zip up the copy.
* Start your own thread in the appropriate section of the forum and attach the ZIP archive to your post using the "paperclip" (file attachments) button.
* Briefly describe the problem history and circumstances in the same post. Somebody will attend to your query as soon as possible.

Hello all,

My copy of Windows 7 Home Premium x64 on my laptop has been having some strange issues lately. I cannot run .msi files, and device manager never populates a full list. Sometimes (rarely, but it does repeat) Windows Explorer will freeze, and if I attempt to close it and reopen it using task manager, the UI reloads, but whenever I click on a folder it claims Windows cannot load explorer. Restarting fixes that. I scheduled and ran CHKDSK, and it repaired a few bad sectors, but it didn't fix any of these problems. I have run CCleaner (both the regular cleaner and registry fixer) and defragmented my hard drive until it's only 1% fragmented. I then tried sfc /scannow, and it read a bunch of corrupted files but could not repair them. I read that to fix sfc, you must download and run Windows System Update Readiness Tool. It has been running and "Searching for Updates on this Computer" for about an hour now, and I'm getting concerned that it's just not doing anything. It's not frozen, the bar keeps moving from left to right and I can click on and off of it. I also have the logs from sfc if anyone wants to take a look at them, they'll be attached. The computer isn't very old, and has an intel i3 and 4gb of ram. If you would like any extra information to help, please reply and I'll get back to you as fast as I can Any recommendations on where to go from here would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks so much for any and all help!

Hi. Two days ago, I transfered a large amount of files, mostly music, from an external hardrive onto my laptop. Today, I noticed an error message shown with a triangle next to the clock on my screen saying "aolload.exe - Corrupt File." I ignored this, and later got this message for various other programs. I finally decided to try running chkdsk through the command prompt, and then I got a "Corrupt File" message for this program.

This is very bothersome, is there anything I can do?

A:Corrupted Files, Chkdsk Also Corrupted.

If you have access to a Windows XP CD, boot from the disk and choose the option to use Recovery Console by pressing R
Choose your windows installation (if more than one listed)
Enter your Administrator account password. This is not necessarily the same password you use to login. If you do not know the password for this account, try pressing ENTER (i.e. Use a blank password)

Run CHKDSK from the command prompt.

N.B. Disconnect all external hard drives\flash drives before booting from the CD, as they often get labelled C: over your hard drive.

I tried to right click my D: volume and scan for errors, I will pastebin the errors from today and yesterday. This is from today : https://pastebin.com/nZzLvtG5
And this is from yesterday : https://pastebin.com/RgnGdwiu
Why is this happening?

Hi tonedef -

Welcome to the Tech Support Forum - Vista Support!

What version of Office are you trying to install (e.g, 2003 or 2007)?

Have you changed any file permission settings or "Taken Ownership" of any folders/files?

The "scan disk" that you mentioned running... was it "sfc /scannow"? If not, click on START | type cmd.exe in the Start Search box | right-click on cmd.exe | select Run as Admin

In the screen that comes up type the following:

sfc /scannow (space after sfc) - press ENTER

Let this run. Try Office re-install.

Good Luck. . .

I have heard a lot about programs and applications that "clean/fix your registry" or whatever that means. I am curious if I run a deep clean on this, would it really help my computer instead of just making the entire computer worse than before. If this is a bad program to use, what is a good one then? Also I have used CCleaner before, only reason why I started to use Advanced System Care Pro is because it seemed to have more options to "seem" better I suppose.

A:Does Advanced System Care Pro really work, or is it just a useless product.

use advanced system care pro at your own risk. Just because it has more features does not make it better and just like other registry programs, it could royally mess things up if you are having problems and you use it to try to fix things. I have also seen them cause problems on perfectly working computer because of deleting so called orphan entries on the registry.

the only results you see in most registry type programs are because you are cleaning your system of temporary files. Those files take up limited folder space and will slow your computer down when the folders and or drive gets too full.

the answers will still be the same as your other thread.

I have a PC that had some type of Facebook bug and they ran Malwarebytes which somehow made this PC unable to boot.

Safe mode doesn't work.

I tried system restore from the 8.1 recovery startup and the password was incorrect.

We went through Windows live and reset the password. Problem is, I don't think the PC is able to connect to the internet to even receive that password change and register it. What can I do when you are completely locked out of any system restore options because of a lost password?

Hello everyone, I would like to address a problem I ran into while trying to restore my Dell XPS M1330 to factory settings. When I boot into advanced boot menu by pressing f8 (I have tried ctrl+f11 and it doesn't work) I press enter on the "Repair Your Computer" option however, when doing so, it only boots up windows like it would normally. I'm not sure at all what the problem is and I'm kind of new to this. Does anyone know what to do? Thank You so much in advanced!

Post HERE and ask Peter (Ex_Brit) to send you the link to the versions of Vista you need, 32 or 64. Include your E-mail address mucked up, like abc at xyz DOT com then edit your post and remove it as soon as you receive the link.

The ISO Peter provides has both SP1 and SP2 applied which can save a lot of time. Otherwise, follow this tutorial: Vista ISO - Download and Create Installation DVD or USB. You then need to create the ISO which will not have SP1 or SP2 included.

Pick up this Tutorial: How to Download a Vista ISO and Create an Installation DVD or USB here:

then do a Clean Install of Vista as described here: Clean Install with a Full Version of Vista

It then restarted after installing updates. it went to a auto repair loop again and again I did a refresh. the same thing happened with the metro UI apps. I then tried the create a new local account but, the problem was that not only the app store was corrupted but the PC Settings as well so I cant do anything.

I still have all the important data on the second internal HDD but I'm wandering if a Windows 8 Restore would wipe the second HDD. Is there any sort of advanced options when a file conflict is encountered when copying files? The "Skip x file(s) with the same date and size" option is nice, but I'd often like to skip files which only have the same size and the date may be the same or different - it's unimportant. Is there any way to do this? It would also be nice if, when copying a folder for example, it would display specifically which file was being transferred at the time.

I know this topic may have been exhausted to death, but I am at my wits end.

In Outlook 2003, I want to edit my email signature using HTML code.

In the olden days (using Windows XP) it was easy. My Outlook 2003 editor would automatically default to my Front Page 2003 program and everything worked great. I could use <a href> code and everything was hunky dory.

Now that I have a new computer with Windows Vista as my operating system, none of my Office 2003 programs seem to work the way they should.

After much searching on the net, I have followed numerous instructions to update Internet Explorer and to visit my control panel to indicate that I want Front Page as my editor, to no avail.

I keep getting the same error message from Outlook 2003: "Could not find an editor for H (.) files".

Oh, I am so not a proponent of Windows Vista at this time!

Any help would be much appreciated,

I don't know why Microsoft made this so difficult in Windows 7 / Server 2008...

I use the Windows Advanced search to find files containing a certain word, it pulls up a list of results... I can "select all" and I can do things like copy them to another location, but I CAN'T find a way to delete these files!!

If I click the DELETE key while they are all selected, nothing happens. It's not allowing me to drag the files into the Recycle Bin.

Am I missing something here? It seems that all options that are normally available when right-clicking on file(s) are present in the right-click menu (open with, send to, create shortcut, etc) EXCEPT for cut or delete.

A:Deleting files from advanced 'Search Results' ??

Try right clicking on the file (name) that you want to delete, and then click "Open File Location" located directly over "Properties"
Then, you will be able to delete the file (at its target location). Hope that helps!

I'm a 32-bit Vista Home Premium user, and about 2 months ago I downloaded a program from CNET.com which had been suggested to me by a friend. The program in question, Advanced System Care Free, has since been removed from my computer.

About 3-4 weeks ago, while I was trying to load Final Fantasy VIII, a window popped up. (Image above) I couldn't figure out what the "problem" might be, I'd been running FF8 on my computer for over a year without problems/crashes. I turn on the game, it goes through it's usual opening sequence, splashes a manufacturer's name across the screen, and then, just as it's loading the saved games, the loading bar stops mid-load, and the game crashes. That's when this window pops up.

Naturally I have no idea what "problem" this could be. There's no emphasis towards missing files or a code number I can use to look it up on the internet, nothing. Another thing I noticed right off the bat was that it couldn't possibly be something to do with Final Fantasy, but rather a problem with another program. I tried virus scan which turned up nothing.

About once a month, I go through Programs and Features and uninstall and delete everything I don't use/need. A few days after the FF8 crash, I tried this. Of course, I found some little things here and there that I didn't need, but when I went to uninstall them, I'd click on it and nothing would happen. I wouldn't get any sort of response from my computer, not even an hour glass s... Read more

Then you may want to to
