Lenovo y40-70 -- finally broke down and purchased lenovo's recovery media; it won't boot?

Q: Lenovo y40-70 -- finally broke down and purchased lenovo's recovery media; it won't boot?

The disk that was sent to me is a USB written in Universal Disk Format - never seen this format before. It was uninitialized so i considered trying to activate it in a few ways, through diskpart in windows, and also by cloning via linux and adding boot flags to the partition it was written to. No luck, though. I'm reluctant to do much more, considering I paid money for this drive; what gives? How does one use this mysterious little drive?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I had to purchase a new hard drive due to disc failure warnings via the smart tests.
I had backed up my files on an external hard drive. When I purchased my laptop, I also purchased the Lenovo recovery disks.
I installed the new hard drive with little issue.I booted the computer up, no problems. It loaded the disc 1 of the recovery set.I answered the intro questions, it started the process and in less than a  minute I received the "Product Recovery: Recovery failed" message.
I checked the forums and I do not see a resolution. Maybe I missed it. The OS is Windows 7. Machine type: 2436Model: CTOBIOS: G5ETA6WW (2.66 )

Any help is appreciated.

I wonder if it isn't a windows licencing issue ? I am not if M$ are still supporting installs of Win7 and maybe something is failing there if you are online during the install. Also it will not install if the previous install was upgraded to Win 10 during the period when it was offered for free.Just throwing some possibilities around.

Hello everyone, It has been a while since I had to setup a hard drive with partions, etc. to install an OS.   I'm hoping someone can assist and point me in the right direction.  Windows 10 came in down off the intenet (without authorizion) and made my system unusable.  At least that is what I beleived at the time.  Come to find out the brightness was dim.  urgh...      So I removed the hard drive and retrieved my data.  In the mean time, I ordered from HP the "Recovery Kit" on USB.  I reinstalled the hard drive, inserted the USB drive, powered up, hit esc, selected boot options, and booted to the USB.  HP Recovery dialog is displayed, explaining how the process would work. Asked me if I wanted erase all hard drive data, and reset to factory specifications. New low in customer service. Had a Lenovo tech here to do a warranty replacement of the display on my laptop and he left it in much worse shape than he found it and gave us a scare as an added bonus. He was yelling and clearly kicking things around out of frustration several times while he was here and then just left. I had debated asking him to leave but was honestly afraid to engage him, but having him just leave was really odd. Called the cops to be sure it was documented and to see if there was anything else we should do. And while that was all odd enough, then I called Lenovo to see what they would do to sort this out and all they can do is escalate me for a call from a supervisor in 2-3 business days.  Got an email yesterday saying they would get back to me in one business day and then tonight got this gem from escalated support: Subject: 02554745 [ ref:_00D30V2Wu._5001412BHaF:ref ] Hello Mr FreemanThis is regarding your Lenovo computer and the recent onsite service for your unit. Hi All, I am attempting to download Recovery Media from the Lenovo website for my new X1 Carbon. I go to the Site indicated in the documentation provided with my new laptop; http://www.lenovo.com/lenovorecovery however once I log on neither the 'Reset' or 'Submit' buttons work on the page. I am therefore unable to organise Recovery Media, which is very frustrating. I have tried the following browsers; Chrome, Edge and Firefox! Any help from Lenovo here would be great. Kind Regards, David

Hello guys and girls, Please help! I'm going to make this a bit short, but let me tell you my problem. I bought a Lenovo B575 in 2012 and it came with win7. It also had all of the lenovo software, e.g. Lenovo energy management, etc. I upgraded to Win 10 during May of 2016 during the free upgrade period, however, it became terribly slow. The idiot that I was, instead of using onekey recovery or installing win7, I formatted the hard disk (erasing the onekey rescue system and all), then reinstalled win 10! Seriously, I think I took out my brain at this time cause I was so stupid! And the computer was as slower than ever. Only then did I figure out the terrible mistake I made. Another thing is that I didn't create recovery media before, even worse. This all happened in Jan 2018. So now, I don't have the recovery media and I need it, specifically for Lenovo B575. I heard of this system recovery media download you could do with your serial no. on Lenovo's website, however, my PC ended up not eligible. So please, I need Lenovo B575 reovery media, not just with win7 but also with all of Lenovo's sofware for free. Any help would be highly appreciated! Thanking you sincerely, Jack

HELP ! I have purchased Win 8.1 recovery media 64 BIT - USB - from Lenovo a year ago and am trying to use it again to to a clean install of Win 8.1. I am on Lenovo Y50-70. I have tried going through System Restore via the novo button, and it does work eventually but once I power off I can not get laptop to turn on again. Recently ran rest through Lenovo Product Recovery program however over a day passed and I finally saw a 'setting up windows' screen with little circle of dots but then it shut down. I have tried re-starting and its still doing this taking hours to boot up thing, which all started a couple weeks ago immediately after a Windows 10 update and the driver updates for Nvidia GeForce 860M and Intel HD 4600 graphics. Then sleep mode & hibernation would not work and it has snowballed from there. THis is why I am trying to reinstall Win 8.1 which was the OS the laptop came with. ALso, when i get to Windows Setup box it said: Windows is installing the following items:C:\SWWORKBCD0B.CMD (check mark)C:\DRIVERS\DPINST.CMD (check mark)C:\SWWORK\DOWORK.CMD (it hangs on this one and nothing happens)C:\SWWORK\FINISH.CMD BIOS:USB Legacy - EnabledSATA Controller Mode - AHCIBoot Mode - Legacy SupportBoot Priority - Legacy FirstUSB Boot - EnabledOS Optimized Defaults - Win 8 64 bit If anyone can please help me and ket me know what I am doing wrong that would be much appreciated.

If you mean the factory recovery files try Lenovo for a recovery disc set if available. If you mean for the OS alone just download the MEDIA CREATION TOOL from microsoft which you will use to download the OS installer. As to drivers go to the download site for your unit to download them.

I apologize if this question is posted to the wrong group. As it is specific to Office 2010 installation on a Lenovo I am not sure where to post.

I installed Office 2010 from CD/DVD. To accomplish this I had to make a drive Q available for the Office installer to work correctly. On Lenovo laptops drive Q is, by default, used to store the recovery media (Windows 7, drivers, etc.). The 'easy' fix was to assign the current drive Q to another drive letter making drive Q available to install Office 2010.

The problem I now have is that I want to create a recovery DVD from the media that is normally installed on drive Q, but is now on drive Z. When I run the Lenovo utility to create the recovery media it cannot find the files. If I try to access or delete the drive Q used by the Office 2010 installer I am denied access. I assume drive Q i now a virtual drive as I cannot see it in the Computer Management >> Storage >> Disk Storage utility.

Can anyone suggest a method for removing the current drive Q (assuming Office 2010 no longer needs the drive), or how I can get the Lenovo utility to see the recovery files on another drive (Z)?

Thanks in advance for any help on the above.

You are limited to 1 download.  Not sure if they can "reset" that or not.  Call support and explain to them what happened.  I do not speak for Lenovo but in the past they would just send you a recovery thumb drive.

Hello, I have a Lenovo Yoga 2 11 Model# 20332 laptop.  I wanted to clean the computer so i can sell it.  I pushed the OneKey Recovery and selected to reset the computer to factory settings.  It begin resetting and about 3/4 way through, I received an error.  Now when i go into the OneKey Recovery, I select my option and the computer just stalls.  I really dont know what else to do.  I did the factory reset the way it was supposed to be done.  Now Lenovo wants to charge me $69 for a USB with the OneKey Recovery software.  I'm not even sure if I can get to the USB drive in the computer.  I would appreciate any suggestions and i wonder why Lenovo wants to charge me for the same software that failed on the computer.  Lenovo should at least offer the software at no cost or minimal cost due their system failure.  Thanks, Redhorse

So I tried to download a copy of drivers for my Yoga 920, then I noticed the link for recovery media. I tried to download it using the steps and the tool. The download went fine and I proceeded to the Select USB tab. It detected my drive and started the process, then the usb suddenly got disconnected and the process failed. I'm using the laptop on a table and I did not touch the usb during operation. I tried to do the process again, but I get an error as seen in the screenshot. Any help? Tips? to get the thing working again Alternatively, if I don't trust the reset option on the laptop, can I just download a Windows 10 ISO with microsoft's tool and use that to reformat the laptop without inputting a key? Will my device still be activated after the process?

A:Failed to Create Recovery Media with Lenovo tool

Hi svrndmngjr,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

The Yoga 920 does not have a special factory recovery partition like One Key Recovery like on other machine.
It uses the same Windows reset features just like all other Windows 10 machines as shown in chapter 3 of the users manual here.

A clean installation using a downloaded ISO (same version of Windows that the machine came with) would automatically activate it. OEM product keys are embedded on the systemboard (Win8 and Win10) unlike having a COA sticker that Windows XP and Win7 does.

You can follow the guideline here. With the drivers and applications, if you have additional copies from the D drive then just copy it or download it from here (support website). Other applications are in the Microsoft Store just type Lenovo in the search to download if you need it.

Your device would still be activated after the process.

Hope this help answer your query.

Regards

Since you have to hunt around different Lenovo sites (and other sites) to find out about these softwares, I decided to make a post to get feedback from actual Yoga owners on how these programs interact, what they do, which ones are prerequisite, and which ones are unnecessary. Please don't take this as a blanket answer. This is just what I have found. It might be right - it might be wrong. I'm looking for others to post their experiences as well. Lenovo System Interface Foundation Driver - Necessary prerequisite (missing driver in device manager without it). It allows the Lenovo Utility and Lenovo Companion to work. Lenovo Yoga Mode Control - Necessary if you want to use your yoga to seemlessly change between all the different modes (laptop, tablet, tent, stand). This software is responsible for autorotating and putting Windows into tablet mode. Lenovo Utility - Recommended(?) This one I'm not too sure on. I remember that I was missing some function that I wanted but I can't remember what it was now. Maybe battery cycle count and health? Lenovo Companion - I don't have this one installed and don't think it's necessary but would like someone else to shed some light here.

Hello and welcome,

My guess is that your G50 predates DDRS eligibility.

You can install a "clean" 8.1 from downloaded MS media and follow that with Lenovo drivers from support.

My mom just bought a used X140e on eBay. It arrived with a failing hard drive* and no COA sticker, so I got another hard drive and have been working on how to approach installing Windows on it. However, the Lenovo USB Recovery Creator tool for Windows® 8, the support page at https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/us/en/contactus, and the device registration page under my account all say it's a ThinkCentre ("M93 Desktop (ThinkCentre) - Type 10A0"), when I put in the serial number. The type code on the label is actually 20BL-S00400. I've double-checked the serial number to make sure I entered the right one (the only wrinkle was that some parts of the site and the app don't accept the hyphen in it). When I run the Recovery Creator, after I log in, it just tells me: "There are no active orders. There are no active orders presented for you. So I tried updating the BIOS on my Lenovo M92p desktop using Lenovo System Update program. Unfortunately, it didnt work and i ended up with a blank screen. I waited for about 10 minutes and still nothing happened. I decided to hold the power button and had it shut off. After multiple power ons, still no POST. I read the HMM and the section about BIOS boot block recovery. It said I needed to burn an iso file to a CD and also move the CMOS jumper to pins 2 & 3. Since I dont have a cd, I put the bios flash package on a usb drive instead, plugged it into pc, and also moved CMOS jumper to 2 & 3. Computer turns on and there are two beeps. No display. Does this mean I will have to get a CD?

I recently purchased and installed HP's Windows 7 Recovery Media (USB version).  The install seemed to go well, but at the end I got the message:"Contact HP SupportWindows cannot find F:\System.sav\Util\RStone.exe.  Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again." Since the computer is not at a command prompt, but rather at the end of a recovery, I selected Finish, and the computer turns off.  I then restarted, with the recovery USB installed, and it took me back to the beginning of the Recovery process, which I tried again, but got the same result.  On the next start up, I tried without the recovery USB installed.  The Windows startup begins, everything looks fine, then the HP Recovery Manager comes up and tells me the HP recovery is complete, press Finish to restart.  So I press finish, the computer restarts and now I get the following screen: BOOTMRG is missing, press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart And that is where I'm stuck.  I've read a bit about this error message and can't figure out a solution.  I will say that I've run several system checks and all the memory and hardware has been operating completely fine.   Would really appreciate some help.  I haven't been able to get a live person from HP to help which is frustrating having just spent $30 on the recover media which didn't work.

The hard drive failed completly.  It belongs to an older couple so they did not create recovery media.  I used the support portal and entered the serial number to give me the option to order the correct recovery media for this specific computer.  I have done this many times without issue.  Following the instructions included, leads me to this error:The system recovery media does not support this computer.  You are not able to restore this system with the media. My question: who do I contact to ask what is wrong with the media and if they can send the correct media?  When purchasing it, I received an email of confirmation that only gave me links to HP support.  When looking at the support information, they want to charge me for the call when their media which I just purchased is the problem.  I double checked they were provided the correct serials and model numbers by me.

Let me just start by saying Lenovo rocks hard! Let me also say Dell sucks! I decided to upgrade my two laptops I use for my work, they were around 3 years old. I am an independent computer consultant. I mainly architect and develop software for businesses. I focus on the Microsoft stack and Azure. I had an Asus touchscreen laptop for travel and a beefier Sager with a desktop chip and NVidia graphics card for home. I mainly work from home recently but I have to travel to customer sites periodically. I did some research and with Intel Skylake I found out laptops can now have 64GB of memory which I need because I run multiple Hyper-V VMs on my home laptop. I first searched for my home laptop and the Lenovo ThinkPad P series came up due to the 64GB I was looking for. When I looked at the P70 I got excited because it had virtually everything I was looking for in my new home laptop, 17? screen, higher graphics resolution (4K), PCIe-NVMe SSDs, 64GB DDR4, Nvidia Discrete GPUs, and high end Intel Skylake CPUs. What excited me more was they had an Intel mobile Xeon and ECC memory to go with it (Not sure the ECC memory is functioning as ECC now). The NVidia Quadro concerned me because I was used to the Nvidia GTX series and really wasn?t familiar with the Quadro series. Anyway I decided right then I wanted the Xeon Mobile chip, 64GB and all the other components recently mentioned so I priced it out and it came in around 5K which is what I usually spend but this w... It looks like from doing more research RAID 0 is possible dangit.  Why Lenovo didn't do it up front when it was ordered that way shame on you Lenovo.  It looks like in anoither thread the reads aren't much faster but the writes are ~2/3s faster.  Man now I need to decide if I want to start over from scratch.  With VMs write times are crucial.  This upsets me.

Good evening all I purchased a Lenovo Yoga 3 earlier this year in Australia and have since moved to the Cayman Islands. The Yoga has a standard 2 prong Australian charger which is 100V-240V and 50-60Hz. I have purchased 2 different international adapters which I have plugged into 2 different outlets at the hotel but my lap top does not charge.  My dad suggested that I try plugging it into the hairdryer outlet in the bathroom as it may have higher voltage and that worked. I was also able to charge it by plugging it into an open socket that comes out of a clock at the hotel (pics attached). I'll be leaving the hotel shortly and am worried that I will not be able to charge my lap top in my new home. There are limited computer/electronics stores here. I'm not a very technical person so need your help, please! The notebook is under warranty but Lenovo said there is no issue with the laptop or charger because it works in the hairdryer outlet and that they have not heard of this issue before. However, I understand that the charger is designed so that it can work with various voltages and it doesn't seem to. Does anyone have any suggested solutions? The only one I can think of is to order a US charger as I understand they are the same shape and voltage as the Cayman Islands. Many thanks in advance for your assistance! Gemma

Cayman islands use US type plugs, but I would expect an Australian charger would work with a simple plug converter.

Hey guys, so I've gotten myself in a bit of a pickle. Ok, long story short, the hard drive in my Lenovo Y50 crashed and started doing the click of death.  Fed up with dealing with Western Digital, I said "screw it" and drove to the nearest computer store and bought a Kingston 480GB SSD (Which I am LOVING so far). However, because the size of the drive was smaller, my recovery USB refused to restore the operating system, so I had to borrow my friends computer, download the media creation tool and do a clean install of Windows 10 that way. Everything was totally fine, then I remembered I had forgotten something really important. Every single back up I've ever done was with Lenovo Onekey Recovery. A program that I did not have anymore. So obviously my next course of action was to get a recovery key from Lenovo. I called the number, explained the situation, and they sent me the key that I got in the mail today. I plugged it in expecting the rest of the road to be filled with puppies and rainbows... but it's not looking that way. Going into BIOS, it does not see the Lenovo Recovery key as a boot option. I've since made my own clean windows 10 recovery drive than can be booted into fine, but it doesnt recognize the lenovo drive as a bootable UEFI device either. Furthermore, it doesn't matter if I set BIOS to UEFI or Legacy Support... it still doesn't recognize the drive either way. The guy on the phone told me he'd have to send me a windows 8.1 key, si... So the hinge on my Y50, their "Top of the Line" gaming laptop broke. When the hinge broke it popped off the front panel of the laptop. Although my computer was out of warrenty by about 2 months, they agreed that this should not have happened and decided to repair my computer. They took my computer for about a month. When it came back, I booted it up, and the touch screen was constantly being triggered on the left side. I called Lenovo and they told me to send it back. Long story short, they have had my computer for the last 4 months now and cant come up with a solution. They say the part is on backorder and I can either wait for the part.....which I've been waiting 4 months for, or I can have my computer returned in the condition it's in. I haven't been able to use my computer for months now....as I type this on my phone.

Hello all,I had installed dual boot windows 10 and Ubuntu 16.04 on lenovo 50 series. This laptop stoped working after water damage but I managed get the hard disk working. Now, I have got another laptop with 500GB hard disk, Lenovo  50-80 Ehnanced experience 2.0, thinkpad, windows 7. So I removed its hard disk and installed the dual boot one, but only windows 10 start, no options for selecting  the ubuntu Os and Windows (grab loader or windows loader). Do I have to make changes in settings?. so that ubuntu OS can be detected, and use it. It is most important one, since all my works are in this Os. Thank you in advance for your help.regardsHuu

So everything has been working fine on my laptop until about 10:30PM EST tonight. I bought it new in August 2011.
Specs:

OS: Windows 7 Home Premium
CPU: Intel Core i7-2630QM @ 2.00 GHz
RAM: 8 GB
HD: 750 GB
BIOS: 45CN36WW

It's always been a fine machine with NO problems.
However, last night there were Windows 7 updates that were installed and then restarted my computer. I had not gotten a chance to check exactly what they were though. About 10:30 this evening, flash crashed in Mozilla Firefox which is not that uncommon, and from there Firefox closed, and so did my Microsoft Word and Excel apps that were open. From there, my computer began to shut down and restart. When it went to restart, all it could do was go to the opening Lenovo screen which gives you the F2 (setup option) and F12 (multiboot menu option) as it typically does. Besides a thin strip at the top that appeared after about 30 secs that only displays moving static that eventually will just stick, that is where the boot process ends. No Windows 7 screen, and certainly no opportunity to boot into safe mode to check for any problems. The screen freezes and goes nowhere.

So basically, all I'm getting in terms of boot options are lenovo features, not windows 7 features, meaning it won't boot into windows 7 or windows 7 safe mode no matter what I try. The biggest problem here is that I have no windows 7 disc to even try to boot from my dvd drive.

Anybody have any suggestions on what the probl... Read more

Are you able to get into the advanced boot menu by tapping F8? It might not be listed on the startup screen but it should still be there.

If not you can burn a repair disc from any PC with Windows 7. Theres steps from Microsoft Here.
