Win 7 shows corrupted jpeg thumbnails when resolution is big...

Q: Win 7 shows corrupted jpeg thumbnails when resolution is big...

Hello, just got this laptop. It came with ubuntu, but loaded Win 7 64bit on it. All drivers on place. It works alright, but noticed this nasty bug that is driving me mad: It shows corrupted thumbnails on "big" jpgs. It can show huge tiff files (like 200mb and big resolution) as thumbnail, but it seems to really struggle with jpegs bigger than 1500px which is silly. Please dont refer me to Windows support forum, because i have seen people ask for help on similar issues and they just copy and paste responses that arent even helpful. I have seen good answers here so i think you guys might know whats up. Thanks!

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Windows no longer shows the handy previews for JPEGS and BMP anymore. It still shows html, and word/excel docs in the preview window though.

How do I get that working again?

E-mailed you a registry patch to fix that. If you would rather fix it yourself, then make sure the following registry keys are set up:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.jpg
. . . ShellEx
. . . . . .{BB2E617C-0920-11d1-9A0B-00C04FC2D6C1}

The value in that last humongous key should be (Default)="{7376D660-C583-11d0-A3A5-00C04FD706EC}" without the quotes. It should look like this:

Then create an identical registry key as above, except instead of a ".jpg" reg key, you would have a ".bmp" reg. key. It's easier to use the registry file I sent you, but if you'd rather fix it yourself, I included the above.

Hello.
When i open a windows folder that contains JPEG files i can't see the thumbnails and the slideshow. My pictures are OK if i open them. Why this is happening? Can be fixed without big effort?
The problem occured after removing a dialer using a mix of various programs like: Ewido, Adaware, Cleanup, CCleaner, Avast, Spybot Search and destroy, HiJackThis.
Thank you in advance.

You can run Restore Thumbnail Views in XP from here http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm, line 17. Just download and run the fix.

When I'm editing I'm looking at my thumbnails a lot. But sometimes the thumbnails are not the picture they appear to be. I notice when I take a closer look to edit using Microsoft Office Picture Manager or just filmstrip mode. Sometimes I notice when I change the name of the picture and it magically changes back into the real one.

Another question is why some and not the others? I have over 20,000 pictures on my computer-almost all from a digital camera, some from scans-and this has only happened like 30 times.

But still enough to bother me.grrrrrrrrrrr It's very annoying if you're trying to edit, organize, name and rename pictures and you can't know what you're working with just by looking at the thumbnails.*grumble, grumble*

Simply put the thumbnails are wrong. I wonder if this is supernatural? Is my comp possessed and do I need and exorcist. If not, what do I need?

Any help would be appreciated. Oh, I have an eMachines T3256 with Windows XP Home.

Desperate,

PS The problem is contagious! I put the folder with all the pictures on a USB flash drive and moved them to another computer and those thumbnails are still not what they're supposed to be..

A:My jpeg thumbnails are not what they're supposed to be (RESOLVED)

Do you mean the thumbnails are pictures but just not the right pictures? (or an unknown file type icon)?

I had a similar problem with music files in WMP, I try to play one of them and it plays a totally different song, very annoying indeed.

I'm running Windows 2000, and I want to be able to see JPEG images when I select "Thumbnails" under the View menu. Currently, the only images that display are Windows bit map images (BMP). I know it's possible to see JPEG windows as thumbnails under Windows 2000 because I used to have a different computer that ran 2000 and did display JPEGs. However, I got a new computer that doesn't. I'm assuming there is a way to tell Windows 2000 to display JPEG images in thumbnails, but I can't find any reference to thumbnail views in Windows help or on the Microsoft website.

Any suggestions, please?

Hi,

In the last day, I'm experiencing problems browsing pictures (mainly jpegs) in My Pictures. When I open the subfolders in that folder, thumbnails are slow to load. Even if the view is set to 'details', the mini icons against the file name build very slowly. This wasn't happening until yesterday when I loaded some images to a subfolder in My Pictutes from a CD.

If I try to navigate away from the folder, my computer freezes.

I have tried deleting all the pictures I loaded yesterday and have defrag'd, but still getting the slow behaviour.

Running Windows XP.

Thanks

Any thoughts?

This has been a On & Off issue. When I first got the laptop I did not get any of these issues. It's when I installed updates it's been happening. The thumbnails for some files will not load & get corrupted (not showing anything just the name). Sometimes I reboot it clears the issue but it just happens again it's getting annoying & it's happening more often now. I thought I resolved the problem a while back installing a update but it's happening again. The green bar at the top does not fully finish & it just stops there.

I've tried refreshing but it doesn't change a thing. I've cleared the the thumbnail cache (there was nothing in there, the file size was around 70MB) didn't change anything. I've also downloaded the Icon Cache Rebuild bat it didn't do anything. There are some optional updates I haven't installed yet I could try that. I did install it in the past but it slowed down my laptop so I had to do a System Restore. I never experienced this problem on Vista. So I'm wondering what the problem is.

It sounds like you may have to do a system restore again to get it back to normal(hopefully).

Hi All!
Can anyone tell me if it is possible to repair corrupted JPEG files, such is this example: corrupted JPEG ??
The memory card suddenly stucked in my digital camera, and the only way to recover the data was to use some soft designated for this, but unfornately most of the pictures were corrupted like this.
I have tried various programs to recover datas from card but the result was always the same .
But I know that there is a chance to correct these corrupted JPEG's, as one soft for recovering damaged JPEG recovered some parts of the picture, not the whole - just some fragments, but anyway.
Somehow to change the binary code.....

Any advise will be appreciated!
Thanks!

Hi,

I have a large collection of jpg files that I get off my Nikon D-SLR. After transferring them to my hard-drive and resizing using photoshop CS3, I keep them in D:\My Documents\My Pictures . I also e-mailed the pictures to friends. A few weeks later, I go to view the pictures and some of them won't load. In Windows "Picture Viewer" it just spends minutes "Generating Preview" when other not corrupted files are opened within a second. More importantly, when it finally opens the pictures half the photo loads and the rest of the picture is solid gray (what I'm calling corruption). The back-up files (DVD) and copies i've sent to friends do not have this problem. Not sure if it's a virus. Any ideas? Thanks a lot.

Hi everyone. A few weeks ago, I had to format my computer due to a possible virus. Basically whatever infected my computer slowed me down so badly that I couldn't back up anything at all but a few pics. At first I thought that all three pics were unrecoverable because I kept getting an error when trying to move them from the floppy to my hard drive. However, last night I tried to move them individually and it worked. There was one file that couldn't be "moved". However, if I copied and pasted it, it would work. Only one problem, this one file was also corrupted. I messed around for a while and ran Disk Checker and let it fix any errors on the floppy before trying to copy and paste it back to the hard drive again but it did not work. It did change the picture to where instead of only being able to see the top 1/2 inch of the picture, I was able to see the whole thing. Unfortunately, it was still corrupted and kind of messed up looking. It was blue shaded and it looked like part of the picture had been copied and pasted to the side of it.

Now here's the thing that makes me feel like this image might be recoverable. The thumbnail is perfectly fine. It's the image itself that doesn't appear to be working. Is there any possible way to recover this image considering that the thumbnail is still fine? Now, I don't know much about picture recovery but I would think that since the thumbnail is ok then the pic itself is ok as well but the data ha... Read more

Hi,

I have a Sony Mavica Digital Camera (Burns pics directly to mini CD-R/W, no flash memory slots). In an accident some of the film/dye near the outer rim of a CD-R got scratched off. Of course some data was lost, but the inner 2/3 of the CD was not damaged. I used BadCopy (a data recovery program) to recover many of these pictures.

Now I have a folder full of recovered pictures, but every single one is messed up. The thumbnails are fine, but when I open the file, parts of the image are shifted around and colors distorted. For example:

http://68.41.33.79/File35.JPG
http://68.41.33.79/File87.JPG
(sorry for the long downloads, but image info was lost when I tried resized it)

The top 2/3 of each picture was fine, bottom 1/3 seems to be shifted left a little, then the part cut out warps around to the right. Every recovered picture had similar problems.

Any ideas?? Thumbnails are fine for some reason.

Appreciate your help,
-Dan

Hello,

I took VERY IMPORTANT pictures with my new Canon PowerShot SX160 IS using an old, generic 32gb memory card (that I've never had any problems with). While taking pictures last Saturday, suddenly the playback wouldn't work. Got home, popped the memory card in and all the pictures I took were gone.

I ran a recovery program and 1/2 the files came back no problem (THANK GOD). The other 1/2 are corrupted ( ).

I have found several programs out there that run, show me the preview (YEAH, HOPE!!) and then want BIG MONEY to actually recover the files.

My question comes down to this - are there any free programs, what is the best out there to fix/recover these corrupted files?

I tried a random file remover, but it said the name was too long, so I punched the name in manually. It said it removed them, but they're still there. I went into safe mode and same issue occurs.

Hah! That was too simple. But maybe this will be handy as an archive.

All I had to do was rename the folder the file was stored in, then the file was able to be removed.

Strange... One was able to be removed, but the other wasn't...

The second file I was able to delete using a command prompt and using "del C:\dir\file"

I've been fighting this problem for a couple of weeks now. I build a new windows 7/64 pro box over the holidays and whenever i use ccleaner my thumbnails go haywire. I get a control panel page that has nothing on it except for the title 'control panel'. half my themes thumbnails are missing. and worst of all my display fusion thumbnails are half missing. I have a windows 7/64 home box that this new one replaced and i never has a single problem with that one.

using -
microsoft security essentials and comodo firewall

I've tried -
restoring to an earlier time -no results
clearing the thumbnail cache - no results
deleting all the thumbnail .db files and letting windows rebuild them - no results
ran sfc\scannow - no results (no integrity violations)

when i reinstall windows (third time now) everything is fine until i run ccleaner. could really use another suggestion.

A:Thumbnails get corrupted when using ccleaner

when running Ccleaner, UNcheck any scan of thumbnails.

Instead of reinstalling, you might try this: Thumbnail Cache - Clear and Reset

We recently did a motorcycle ride down the Natchez Trace Parkway. When we returned home we moved our photos to my desktop computer. I found that for some unknown reason the photos on the 16GB SDHC card seemed to have ended in the middle of the trip. I found some software, purschased it and ran it. It managed to find all of the photos and recover only about a third of the "Missing" photos.
Here's the problem:
Of the recovered photos there is one that was recovered/saved that my wife and I specifically wanted to have. (ain't that always the way!). The photo was saved but it has a size of 29.2kb. Basically it's a thumbnail. Is there any software that will enable the photo to be enlarged in a more viewable size? When I click on it now it enlarges into a blurry unviewable size. Am I making sense of what I need to have done?
I'm assuming this is a hopeless case, I've never heard of software that will do what I'm looking for
Thanks

I have a Dell Inspiron E1505 laptop. A couple of days ago I tried to open an excel file that I regularly use and when I opened it, all cells were blank except A1. In it was "FileError_22001. I start to investigate and every excel file is the same. Furthermore, all of my word & picture files have the same problem. All my excel files are 18 KB, all my word files are 20 KB. They are all time stamped with the exact same time.

I have McAfee that is provided by my employer but I discovered that it had not been updated in some time for some unknown reason. I called our IT folks yesterday morning and they tried to get me fixed but were unable to and had to pass the ticket up to the next level. They were unable to get the virus stuff working again either.

Whatever I got infected with turned off my McAfee firewall, then started corrupting all of my excel, word and picture files. It did not corrupt any files in my recycle bin. I tired to do a system restore to the day before the problems started but it didn't help. Turns out whatever got loaded probably happened the day before all the bad stuff started happening. So, I unrestored the restore that I did the first time and did a system restore to December 1st instead. It did not help and created more problems for me. I keep getting these pop ups, one after another.

I would attach screen shots of the errors but I can't figure out how to do it.

I recently bought a new computer (XP Media Center Edition, Dell XPS600) and unfortunately I'm having some problems already. One of them is with JPEG images I view while browsing the Internet. About half the images I view will partially change colors and become distorted. Occasionally, I can just click 'back' and reload the page the image is on, and it will be fine... but more often than not, I can't restore the original image without deleting the JPEG from the temporary internet files folder. Here's an example:

The original JPEG should look like this:

Several instances of clicking 'back' and reloading the page led to these images:

I haven't noticed the distortion problem with images of other types (bmp, png, gif) but it seems that these types have some problems displaying - about half the time I try to view them, the images do not load and display the "not available" logo. I don't know if these incidents are related to my problem with JPEGs.

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated...

Hi, and welcome to TSF!
Does this only happen in Internet Explorer? Have you tried FireFox? I would guess that if it works in FireFox, that there is something wrong with IE and a repair install might be the solution. Also, have you done any virus/malware scans lately?

Before copying all the files on to my laptop I browsed through them on the laptop screen but still stored on the phone (acting as a mass storage device), which I now wish I hadn't! Suddenly the pictures stopped previewing and the system crashed, and on reloading the SD card had become unreadable, Windows and my phone telling me it was unformatted. I recovered the files using PC Inspector File Recovery, but my main problem now is they won't open - opening them in any application comes up with a message along the lines of "No preview available" or "This is not a valid bitmap file, or its format is not supported". I've tried some programmes on the basis that the files' attributes have been corrupted in some way, but as yet no luck. I'd really like to be able to open the files - it's annoying having them available but not being able to open them or even preview them, so any ideas would be appreciated.

To sum up my problem: I have a host of unopenable JPEG files - is there any way I can get them open in any form?

Thanks in advance.

A:Photos (JPEG) corrupted after transfer from SD Card

What photo editing software do you use?
Have you had any luck downloading any of the images.
If it is the chip, you have little hope, as those mini SD chips can be so very fragile. If it was caused by the camera, you may have.
Have you attempted to download them through a good USB card reader, or a system mini SD reader apart from the Camera

Windows Media Player 11 shows thumbnails only for certain video files, although it can play all of the files bellow.

Here are the files it shows thumbnails for.

Mpeg, Wmv, Avi sometimes.

Here are the files for which it shows only plain icons.

Mkv, Divx, Avi.

Here is a list of all codecs I have on my system.

Help me get Windows Media Player to show thumbnails for all my files, please.

A:Windows Media Player 11 Shows Thumbnails Only for Certain Files

By default WMP11 (well, any of them really) don't give their logo (icon, .ico) to ALL media formats, ONLY the ones it can play default (meaning, if you install codecs, WMP won't add their logo to that file(s))

Hello BC,

{Running Vista Home Basic 32 bit SP1}

I have a really irritating issue. I had a trojan back in AUgust and after removing it completely, my background pic stopped showing up. But it turns out the trojan wasn't completely removed. So after getting rid of it 100% for sure, only certain pics will show up as a background. My jpg pic of Gym Class Heroes wont show up but my jpg of Marilyn Monroe will. Also, thumbnails of pics wont show up in folders. On my desktop they will though. After a bit of searching, I found that lots of people have had a similar problem. Help me!

I was trying to show my issue to someone and tried changing my background to Gym Class from Marilyn and back again... Marilyn wont show up now either!

Symantec Powerquest Drive Image 7 corrupted thousands of my jpeg photos!

I am desperate to restore a few thousand corrupted jpeg photo files. They include many treasured photos from weddings, Christenings, holidays, birthdays, kidsí activities and so much more.

This is how they became corrupted:

I backed up my desktop hard drive to an external hard drive using Symantec Powerquest Drive Image 7. Later, when I restored my desktop hard drive from the backup, my photos did not restore fully. They werenít all corrupted, but probably 95% of them were. The photos show maybe a half, a third or even less of the photo. The rest of the photo is black or grey or otherwise gone or distorted somehow. All thumbnail images are whole and appear to be fine. Drive Image 7 has also appeared to erase the date/time stamp most of the photos also.

I donít know if the photos didnít backup properly or if they just didnít restore properly. I hoped it just didnít restore properly because I still have the backup file and maybe I can still recover. Unfortunately, I think it didnít backup properly to begin with. I only say this because Iíve tried several times to restore the backup file using Drive Image in a desperate attempt to recover the entire image but I had no luck doing so.

Iíve also tried a few freeware or shareware photo restoration programs on the corrupt files but had no luck yet. One of the programs I tried, JPEG Recovery, did not correct the problem. However a message appeared... Read more

A:Backup utility corrupted my jpeg files. Please offer advice

Unfortunately it seems all the methods you've tried for recovery are corroborating with each other and indicating that the backup was corrupt. Have you tried the PowerQuest Drive Image 7 Backup Image Browser to just open and view individual pictures that you know to be otherwise corrupted?

And what about the original photos? Where they all overwritten by a complete drive image restore or something like that? I ask because if there's any chance they might have been deleted but not overwritten, those might be your best chance with recovery software.

I'm really sorry for your loss if it turns out that way, my Mom has about 6,000 photos and most of them are crap, but it would be really hard to take if about a thousand of them disappeared so I never use any backup program that isn't completely transparent. I know you will never trust Drive Image again but don't trust any backup software that you can't verify the contents of simply by browsing to the backup with windows explorer and opening any file there at any time, and never only make one backup. You need at least two to actually have a backup when one set is lost or destroyed, and one of those two sets should be stored off-site.

I've included a link to a powerful data recovery program http://www.runtime.org/ but in your case it won't do you much good if all it recovers are corrupted or partial images. Good luck.

I have a jpeg file with artwork that has to be saved in high resolution because otherwise when I send it off to the printers the quality of the printing will be bad. It appears the file I have from graphic designer was saved in a low resolution. Please help? What program do I need to do this?

A:converting jpeg into high resolution so as in printable format

You can't really just enlarge a low resolution photo and have it look good. The photo only contains so much "image information" and when that information is lacking, the enlargement shows the gaps.

Many photo editing suites have some compensation for that, such as reducing "sharpness" to effectively smudge the existing pixels to fill in the missing ones. But if you want a good, high resolution image, you need to start with a high resolution image.

Hi everybody,

I have got a big trouble. Last week I've been infected by a pack of several trojans. As a result, all of my jpeg, pdf, word, excel and video files have been modified/corrupted in such way it cannot be opened.
I think I have get rid of the trojans by using Adwcleaner, Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and Hitman Pro 3.7. These damaged files are not encrypted and there have not  been showed any message asking for money at all.

Well, I am very concerned about my files since I have not made any backup of my system and the trojan disabled the system restore option. I have been able to activate it again but all the restoration points have been deleted and the shadow copies as well.

I've got the three log files generated by the programs described above. Here you are an advance of the trojans founded:

Mbam: Sathurbot, Hijack.SecurityRun, Agent.ED, Tinba
Hitman Pro: Injector, VBKryjetor, Zusy.

Please, help me. I am lost and do not know what to do.

Thanks.

Hello there,This sounds like a ransomware infection. The corruption that you mentioned might indeed be encryption after all.Do your files have any new extensions added onto them? You might want to look around for any ransom notes that the infection might have dropped.Regards,Alex

Hello, and thank you for taking the time to help in advance.

I am having issues on my computer. Within the last week my windows 7 has gone white and not responding to the point I have to cut power to the laptop. Also I have had 2 updates that completely fail to install KB3126587 and KB3080079 for quite some time now. I have ran sfc /scannow several times always with the same result. That there is corrupted files that cannot be fixed. I'll attach the report for it.

I have tried different things to try and resolve my issue I am having to no avail (maybe I'm doing something wrong). All the different fixes I have tried can be found on this MS site.

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2509997

The methods I tried are 1, 3, 4, 5, and an attempt at 2, and 6 before I stopped out of fear of doing something bad to my computer. None of these succeeded. Some things did get fixed but not all (although I'm not quite sure what was fixed). I have searched the forums on here and other sites but figured it would be best to post my own post and not hitch a ride off of someone else's. Any help would be greatly appreciated and I'll do my best to provide further answers if needed.

Hi.

I tried ipconfig/displaydns which showed porn sites. I cannot access IE unless I right-click on iexplore and run as administrator and Microsoft Fixit said my recycle bin was corrupted. I tried various things in this thread http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic468110.html/ and have now followed the most recent instructions.

I could not run GMER as it would not give me a result of the scan, but can show the logs to DDS.

I plan to transfer a JPEG to a CF card to take to Wal-Mart to have 5" x 7" prints made. This JPEG was scanned from a 35mm slide and saved as a TIFF. I saved it further as a JPEG in two sizes: 5332 x 3664 and 980 x 673.

If I were to have two 5 x 7's made, one from the larger JPEG and one from the smaller JPEG, would there be a discernible difference in quality between the prints? How about if I were to have two 4 x 6 prints made? Or two 8 x 10s? Wouldn't I be able to tell the difference more in a larger print? It seems to me, theoretically, that a print made from a 5332 x 3664 file would turn out sharper than one made from a 980 x 673 file. However, if I wouldn't be able to tell the difference, then of course I'd prefer working with the smaller files.
