Ideapad Y470 - overheating problem Linux

Q: Ideapad Y470 - overheating problem Linux

Hi. Ive recently installed Linux Mint 18 as part of a dual boot set up on my ideapad y470. The issue i'm having is that the cpu temps are running above 80C when idle on my Linux install. Compared to Windows, i see 50-60C when idle, and around 80C when using chrome. Whats the reason for this overheating? I have tried installing a different kernel as well, but ive concluded that it is not the linux distribution itself, but something hardware related at this point. Any ideas?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I upgraded the computer to Windows 10. The upgrade failed.  The BIOS was set to fast boot or boot boost by the Windows 10 installation, and now I am unable to reset the BIOS to normal boot and unable to change the boot order to be able to boot off a DVD.  The normal F2, Fn+F2 combinations are not fast enough or simply do not work with new BIOS setting that Windows 10 imposed on me.  I need to revert the BIOS to default settings so that I can reinstall everything.  Please let me know if you have solution to this weird problem imposed on the users by Microsoft.  Thank you. Pradip Sagdeo

Hello everyone. I recently got my Lenovo Ideapad y470 this Friday and I love it so far. http://shop.lenovo.com/SEUILibrary/controller/e/web/LenovoPortal/en_US/catalog.workflow:category.det...

I got the 085525U version. My problem is that whenever I'm watching Youtube or playing any games/audio I'll get a random stuttering that lasts for .5-2 seconds. Recently today, I did some more research on it and I tested that it only seems to happen with headphones. When I used the normal speakers, it was perfectly fine. This is a minor annoyance to me and I was wondering if there was any way to fix it. I read somewhere that getting rid of Lenovo Power Manager works, but I can't seem to find it under Control Panel. I also read that playing without the battery in fixes the audio, but I have yet to test that. I'm on a wired connection by the way.

Thank you for your time.

EDIT: Nevermind, it also stutters without the headphones in. Can anyone help me solve this? Again, I find it a minor annoyance and it is tolerable to an extent, but having it stutter every now and then can get annoying, especially during gameplay.

Hello guys.
So I'm having quite a problem.
I was surfing the web when suddenly i got a blur screen.
Not knowing the problem I just simply recovered my computer and kept goin my life as if nothing happened. After a while I got another blue screen and this time when it rebooted the screen displayed a message saying it couldn't from my hard disk. I tried taking out the disk and mounting it back again but it keeps happening after an hour or so. So I tried searching for a HDD in Lenovo's shop but wasn't what kind and which disks were compatible with my system.
If i could get information about available hard drivers would ve very much apreciated.

A:Ideapad Y470 compatible hard disks in the market?

Hi herricane45 ,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

Based on the product specification for the Y470
Storage: 500GB (5400 rpm), 500GB (7200 rpm), or 750GB (5400 rpm) /  SATA 3.0Gb/s, 7mm or 9.5mm high

FRU parts list Item 21 pages 82-83 of the hardware manual shows probable harddrives that is supported for your model.
If you are fine with same capacity , your current harddrive would also have a label on its sticker to compare specs too.

Hope this helped answer your query.
Update us how it goes best for you.

Regards

Last annoyance I have with my P50.I have P50 with M1000M with 4K display running linux. Nothing really works fine with 4k, so I am running 1080p.As soon as I start majority of gl apps on NVIDIA (i.e. primusrun something) laptop oventually turns off because (i suspect) temp of CPU goes up to 100 degrees. This typically happens after an hour or somehing. Workaround is to put it onto frying pan which dissipates heat quite well.I've tried to disable CPU cores and throttle them down to lowest freqency - that  doesn't help. So it seems that sole reason is NVIDIA.I recorded temp during session and it seems like it goes up slowly and machine heats up - both nvidia and CPU. I checked nvidia-smi settings:Attached GPUs : 1GPU 00000000:01:00.0TemperatureGPU Current Temp : 50 CGPU Shutdown Temp : N/AGPU Slowdown Temp : 96 CGPU Max Operating Temp : 92 CMemory Current Temp : N/AMemory Max Operating Temp : N/ASo, NVIDIA only throttling itself at 92-96. but at that time CPU temp is even higher and jumps slightly depending on load. So it is too late. So my question to Lenovo - is it possible to change this temps in BIOS so it would not be too late? Or may be someone knows how to lower this values?I can only see single fan speed in linux, but according to lm-sensors maximum speed is 3754 rpm, and there is no way to control it. It is also quite quite at that speen. Do anyone know what is real range, is it possible to increase speed of the fan, my guess 4200 rpm would solve my problem?Anothe... Read more

I installed a WD Black 256G NVMe M.2 in my Legion Y520. Got Windows 10 installed in the SSD and Fedora 26 GNU/Linux in the HDD (1TB Seagate).  Everything is good in Windows. But when I use Fedora, the SSD, overheat badly (80-90C) and eventually shut itself down eventough it is not being used at all (it is not even mounted). This also happens in GRUB and ubuntu 16.04 (live USB). WD denied any support, they just say they are not optimized for Linux.

So I bought  Lenovo Ideapad 700-15isk with GTX 950M 2GB DDR3 a couple weeks ago and whenever I try to play a game (any game, even from year 2009), my GPU starts overheating and when it reaches ~83C, it automatically downclocks itself to 405mhz. I tried to install drivers from scratch, both from OM and from Nvidia, and that didn't help me. I've also gone through a clean installation of Win 10, that didn't help either.Any help would be greatly appreciated.

My lenovo Ideapad Y400 has been overheating and shutting down during gaming. The first time this happened when I turned it back on Windows had to do an update (windows 10) I'm pretty sure this was just a coincidence though. This only happens when I'm gaming though and I can usually get it to last longer if I turn the settings to low. I replaced the thermal paste and it actually solved the problem for about 2 weeks without a shutdown and everything worked fine. Before it was shutting off 2-20 minutes into gaming. Just recently it started shutting off again so I decided to make this post.  Here's what I know:My temps run mostly around 40c when idle and 60c when gaming. Most of the time the computer doesn't even feel warm when if happens. My fan speed never really speeds up before it shuts off (or ever actually) even when the computer feels hot the fan sticks to its regular speed. Some people have suggested replacing the thermal pad on the VRAM. Not sure if a thermal pad is the same thing as thermal paste but I'm pretty sure the VRAM wasn't one of the tings I replaced the paste on.I replaced the thermal paste on everything that came with thermal paste (I forget exactly which parts these were but I could find out if it's relevant). There is no way to increase the fan speed on Lenovo's Ideapad models (short of hitting the dust removal feature every 5 seconds). And It wouldn't matter because people who have physically modded their fans and added new ones say it ma... Read more

Hi! My U410 gets really hot so that I can barely touch it. And the fan is not running anymore. I noticed that the fan was working less and less in the last couple of weeks. Additionally, the power led is blinking constantly while the computer is running (Its the same blinking as in standby). This started a few days ago.The fan is running nicely when I activate the vacuum cleaner option in the settings. So it looks like the temperature detection and the control of the fan are not working properly. Is there something I can do about this? Best, vrs01

I brought a brand new ideapad 720s, it's only 2 days out of the packaging but from day 1 it's been overheating and super loud, much more so then what I'd expect from a new computer. Is it hardware issue? Should I look into exchanging it?

Hi - the current version of the ideapad 710s BIOS does not allow changing of the SATA/drive mode from RAID to AHCI. As a result, it is pretty much impossible to install Linux onto these systems. I've tried multiple combinations of things - completely wiped the drive, disabled UEFI, Secure Boot and enabled Legacy mode, etc - and nothing works.  The currently locked SATA mode basically prevents Linux from even seeing the SSD.  I've tried the latest versions of Ubuntu and Gentoo - both with the same result. Is there any reason why this setting is not exposed?  Are there any plans to expose it?

My notebook has been experiencing a problem where the screen would go black. Keyboard backlighting still works but everything else doesnt't (sound cuts if it happens wile watching a video or listening to audio). When the screen goes black, nothing I do will bring it back unless I power cycle it by holding down the power button. This only started to happen recently after coming back from a trip where the notebook was used for 8+ hours each day for 5 days (not heavy use; office work and video streaming).  After some troubleshooting, the black screen happens after I hear the fan spin up indicating that the internals are starting to get hot. Once it sounds like the fan has hit maximum rpm, the screen will go out. This sounds like a hardware defect to me, but before I send it in for warranty, I want to see if there's any suggestions on anything else that I can do. I want to avoid warranty for now since I have a big trip coming up in 2 months. Not sure if I'll have the notebook back before then.

I recently just got a new Ideapad 100s and I have Windows 10 currently installed on the computer. I want to start using Linux, but I can't seem to boot the OS from my USB key. I have reached the BIOS on the computer, but there seems to be minimal options for the user to change. Below are links to two images of how the BIOS and Boot Menu look like currently. As you can see, the USB option is not available in the Boot Menu. Can someone instruct me on which settings I should change in order to start using Ubuntu?

Preferably I would like to set up a dual-boot. Cheers and I hope to hear if someone here has got some info regarding this!Regards,Fred

Goal: Dual boot Windows 7 and Linux and have an NTFS partition for both OS.

Problem: When creating Logical Partitions with any Linux partition tool(Gparted, cfdisk) the Linux swap and ext 4 partitions shows up on Windows 7 as primary partitions outside of the Extended partition while the NTFS partition shows up inside the Extended partition as logical drive. Disk management shows 5 primary partitions and 1 logical drive inside an extended partition.(As seen in Disk1.jpg attachment) I'm using MBR.(not UEFI)

I can create the partitions in Windows 7 disk management and choose not to format the two logical partitions used for Linux. I can then use the mkswap and mkfs.ext4 command to format the partitions.(See Disk2.jpg attachment)

Questions:
Why is Windows 7 disk management not showing my partitions correctly when I use a Linux tool to partition the disk? Will this cause any problems with Windows 7? I'm afraid of making Windows 7 unbootable.(although it booted just fine I do plan on using EasyBCD to add an entry to load the grub bootloader for Linux)

If I partition my disk with Windows 7 disk management(as seen in Disk2.jpg) will that cause any problems for Linux?

What is the recommended way to handle this? What are the downsides to each way?

Note: I'm a bit of a linux noob.

I have seen posts that other users with this laptop have been successful in installing an SSD. What am I missing? There have been some security problems with this machine, and I would like to rewrite the bios.  As it happens it also needs to be updated anyway.I can open the self extracing .exe file, 0vcn29ww.exe, and it gives me a directory structure.  But what do I do with it?   I've tried running this .exe file in wine.  I get a dialog with a button to continue.  I push that then it crashes with a "string too long" error.  I've read on some forums that one should make a bootable USB, but with what image?Ah so how does one do a bios update for a 510S-14ISK that is running Linux?

HiSo I wanted to run linux as well as windows in the same ssd, while saving my files in my hardrive. For that, I used 16gb of unnalocated space in my sdd, turning it in 25gb for the OS linux. After that I separated my hard drive in more or less half for windows, half for linux. All of it were not formated. Next I booted withmy usb, and installed linux in the SSD (EXT4 format) "/"format, put the /home in my hard drive space(EXT4), and created a swap area in my hdd matching my ram (8gb).The problem is, when I boot my laptop, it doesn't recognize that linux is installed and goes straight for Windows.  I changed the boot setting in bios to 1st one to boot is the SSD.In the image bellow is the information of my partitions.
