Q: Laptop Startup Problems

I have a Dell Latitude 600. This past week, when I turned on the laptop, it boots up, but my hardrive seems to be red-lined. And I cannot run any programs, becasue it freezes up. It does run smoothly in Safe Mode, Safe Mode w/Networking, and in Diagnostic mode. Obviously it is something at startup, but I have gone in and turned everything off.

There was nothing downloaded, or done differently. I simply turned it off and the next day the problem occured, out of the blue. I am the only person who uses or has asscess to this notebook.

Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you...

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

for the past while now I have been having problems with the window on start up and my speakers on my laptop not working.

1-The problem started out with the speakers when I turned down the volume to nothing while playing a game and then I tried to turn it back up a few weeks later I got no sound out of the internal speakers. I tried all the options in the volume looking for anything muted with no results. I then tried to update the sound card drivers with the same results of no sound out of the internal speakers. I did try head phones as I was told by a friend to do so and I am able to hear sounds and music just fine.

2-After this first issue, I noticed that when starting my laptop I had a smaller then the normal screen when starting up, I also have this same size on my main screen. I have been able to change to a higher resolution to fill the entire screen but if I go any lower then the highest resolution I have a black boarder were the window should be.

I have upgraded to windows XP from windows ME erasing whatever information I could, hoping that a new operating program would solve this problem. But with my bad luck it hasn't changed. If you someone could help me resolve these problems I would be very grateful.

Thank you,

Hi, I'm having a disaster of a time trying to get my laptop to function lately, and haven't been able to do so in nearly a week.

This is my laptop. Vista Home Premium/ http://uk.computers.toshiba-europe.com/innovation/jsp/SUPPORTSECTION/discontinuedProductPage.do?service=UK&toshibaShop=false&com.broadvision.session.new=Yes&PRODUCT_ID=1058203

It all started last Saturday when I was looking at some books on Amazon, when Firefox crashed, followed by the laptop itself crashing and prevented me from doing anything but turn it off using its physical button.

At start-up, everything seems to be working fine, but every time I turn it on the furthest I get to is the "Please wait" loading screen after the Vista logo has been displayed, nothing really happens at this point, the loading icon continues to spin but nothing ever comes of it (I've left it for hours on end some days to no avail) aside from an occasional blue screen, which even I know is bad news. Earlier today however, I lucked out and got to the login screen. I entered my password, but didn't get past the "welcome" loading screen, so this was probably a one-off.

Sometimes the laptop fails to get to the Vista logo, and gets stuck on the black loading screen with the "© Microsoft Corporation" text.

I tried to use Safe Mode (and its variations) but all freeze and stop loading at AVGIDSEH.sys.

Startup Repair is often something I'm presented with and attempt.... Read more

So normal and safe mode do not work?

Hi, I was wondering if anyone could help.

My laptop's (Advent 8117 if that helps) been working fine, then this morning things went pear-shaped. To begin with things went fine - Everything seemed to load up as normal, I left the room for maybe 5-10 minutes and when I returned there was a black screen. I waited a while and nothing happened so I restarted.

It comes up with 'Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause.'

It doessn't seem to matter what I click here because my 'Techguys' support thing comes up either way but now nothing on it works. To begin with I ran the Repair Environment, but it couldn't fix it. I also got to try a System Restore but I seem to have no points to restore to.

Now I can't get the Techguys page to do anything. So I tried running in Safe Mode but once again I'm faced with the unmoving Techguys page, and the same goes for when I try and load from the last working point.

The only thing I can think could be the cause is that a small ornament fell off a nearby shelf and caught my laptop. Could this have messed it up? It didn't fall far or hard. Would anything at all happen if this was the case?

I don't have any backup discs or a Vista Cd.

Any help on this would be much apreciated. I have no idea when it comes to this.

A:Laptop startup problems....

I would suggest using a bootable hard drive diagnostic - it's available from the website of the manufacturer of your hard drive. This topic ( http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/28744/hard-drive-installation-and-diagnostic-tools/ ) contains links to the most common ones.Since the Startup Repair didn't fix things (I presume that this is the Recovery Environment that you referred to) - then the issue is most likely with your hard drive (Startup Repair will fix issues with the Master Boot Record, Boot Sector, and the NTFS file system among other things). If the hard drive passes the diagnostics, then the next most likely thing is a corrupted driver (with video drivers being the most common) - but installing a new driver if Windows isn't working is a real challenge.

Hi, thanks for having this forum.

My friend has a HP laptop, that boots up sometimes in safe mode, then the screen shows all lines across it then nothing happens. The fan does appear to be running correctly. Also, sometimes, the screen will go blank and freeze at startup. This laptop was bought a year ago. I have not looked at it yet, I am just telling you what he is telling me.

Any ideas from the info given what the devil it could be.He has no clue as to what to do, and i have some ideas, but need to make sure I can get into
safe mode first.

Now barring that, Can I somehow connect my functioning laptop to his, and download the info that he needs from the harddrive, into my own laptop?

I read somewhere about an IDE connector.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have a Packard Bell Easynote laptop. It was running well until yesterday when I left it on all day. On returning to it the screen was black (no screensaver showing) and the power light on. Wouldnt respond to anything I did so turned it off. When I turned it on again the sreen was extremely pink and then halfway through booting up it closed down altogether. Has been the same ever since. If I leave it for a while turned of it gets further with booting up before it closes down. The cooling fan is running and appears plenty of air. I suspect I may have had an overheat or a power surge. Any ideas before I give up and get a new computer

A:HP laptop startup problems

Hi You have a couple of options as I see it please try these steps that might resolve your issue. 1) Once unit is powered on keep tapping F10 key Go to Diagnostics Run the Hard drive & Memory test on the unit and check if both are working fine. If not you need to replace the part which has failed. 2) If the Hard drive & Memory test passes the Try powering on the unit and keep tapping F11 key Check if you can do a System restore or Recovery from this Screen before doing recovery please back up your data as all data on the unit will be erased. 3) If this does not work then you might have to order a set of RCD from Either you can call HP technical support or click on the web link given below to order the part. Order Recovery Discs for Windows 7, Vista, or XP Let us know how it goes! *Although I am an HP employee, I am speaking for myself and not for HP.****Click the White Kudos star to say thanks********Please mark Accept As Solution if it solves your problem**** RegardsManjunath

I am using Vista but since I don't believe this is a Vista specific issue, I thought I'd post here.

A few days ago, my laptop froze and the monitor went to a random array of stripes and colors. I powered it off, and when I started it up again, all the lights went on and I could hear it turning on but the monitor never came on. All the lights remained on but I don't think it completed startup since I didn't hear any sounds.

I repeated this a few times, and it kept happening. Then I gave up and let it sit overnight. The next morning, it turned on no problem. However, later that day the screen froze and messed up again. Now I am either unable to start it up again, or it starts up and later freezes.

The freezing seems to correspond to how long I wait before starting up the laptop again. If I wait a few minutes, it freezes after a few minutes as well and if I start it up quickly, it doesn't get very far.

I recently flew to Hong Kong (where I am now) and the problem started a day after I arrived. I have a feeling that the problem is related to the move.

My laptop is an HP dv2320us and is about 4 months old.

I'm pretty lost now, please help. thanks.

Sorry in advance for the length of this post but I want to describe the problem accurately, as well as what led up to it.

I recently uninstalled norton systemworks and replaced it w/avg free to free up resources. I then manually deleted the systemworks files that remained behind, but several would not delete. So I deleted some registry keys related to norton (or so I thought, probably stupid on my part).

Since then I'm having trouble with loading XP at start-up (home edition). After loading on a user account it re-boots. I got around the problem by logging on with different accounts, but now that I've done so with all five, it takes several attempts for XP to load (last night it took about half an hour to finally load).

I am also getting a dll error that I think is related to spyware guard, because the program loads initially at start up but then disappears after the error:

"run time error 2147023782 (8007045a) automation error a dll initialization route failed"

I did run a system file check but it did not prompt me to replace files.

I had my hijackthis log analyzed last night and it's clean. I have not tried a repair of XP with the installation disk for fear of what might happen when re-starting.

Once XP finally loads it seems to run fine.

Thanks in advance for any help or insight into this.

A:dll error/startup problems on laptop

What version of System Works did you uninstall? I know from experience that removing all of it is not so clean. There is a fairly involved process, outlined at Symantec's site, which includes removal of folders, files and registry keys.

Not sure exactly, but from the sounds of it, the cause of your problem may be the incomplete uninstall.

Did you back up your registry before you deleted the keys?

Yesterday i accidentally dropped my laptop (HP Pavilion G6) and the battery fell out, it was plugged in at the time. It didnt fall from much of a height so i thought it would be ok. I left it overnight on the startup repair function as i heard it could take a long time for the program to run.

when i woke up this morning it was on some HP recovery program, i cant remember the exact name of it but it gave me options like system restore, system reset to factory conditions, a repair function, backing up files etc. i clicked to backup files but after it had tried doing this for several minutes of so it came up with an error message saying it couldnt be done. so i clicked on the repair function which lead me to three different options, one for repairing windows partition, one for recovery partition and one for command prompt x or something. (sorry i cant be more specific, i dont remember the precise names) but i tried all of these different repairs and none of them worked, except for command prompt which opened the command window, but not knowing what to do with the command window i returned to the initial recovery programme and clicked cancel and then the option to reboot the computer.

Bought a new laptop battery (Anker 90HPG62-B88A) for my husband's HP G72 notebook.  Followed all instructions regarding charging new battery and it's been working great for 2-3 weeks now.  Today laptop would not boot up.  Only went to HP screen and stayed there.  I googled some stuff on my kindle and it said something about BIOS and removing battery and doing start up with power cord.  So I removed the Anker battery, plugged in the power cord, and all has been well since then.  I put the old battery back in (only 25% charging capacity, but it will hold for about 1/2 hour) and still all is well.
Do you think there's a problem with the new battery?  Never had any trouble like this before this time.  Thanks for your help.
Oh, I should add that I have rebooted the computer with the old battery in, no power cord, several times, and it works just fine.

Gateway logo appears at start up, but then screen goes black before Windows Desktop appears.

I've tried all the advance options and I am able to access bios and set USB CD-ROM to #1 in Boot Priority.

I've tried my Windows 8 Recovery discs, a PC-Wizard Repair Disc, and a new Windows 7 Service Pack, all unable to load and/or open as they normally would.

I've tried all the Troubleshooting tips from the gateway Manuel with no success.

Sometimes there is a flash of a page I can't quite read and one time a recovery window appeared to be loading, but to no avail.

I was also able to open and check for errors in the memory, but found no errors there.

Possibly the most troubling was the message concerning the Partition 3 Hard Disk c4dcea67 which seemed to freeze and didn't change anything.

I guess my fear is the problem is more serious. Any help or advice would be much appreciated.

I'm working on a Fujitsu Life Book A Series Laptop that a customer purchased as a second hand PC. The initial problem was a passworded Admin account which I have bypassed, but now after starting up the start bar is non existent and I can only run programs from the command line, or run. All of the programs I tried worked fine, but before opening up successfully they presented the "The procedure entry point AssocIsDangerous could not be located in the Dynamic Link Library SHLWAPI.dll"

If anyone has any suggestion I would be open to them.

I would prefer a reformat but the disks given don't seem to be OS Boot Restore disks, just software restore. And I don't seem to be finding a restore partition.

I actually have found the Recovery Partition, the pc wouldn't access it before but now it will, but I can't get it to run.

I have had the Dell Inspiron 2200 laptop for 3 and a half years now and it has developed some serious problems. On start up it takes to a white screen and asks for my hard disk password. I have had it since new and never entered a password and have also acquired the master password from dell and still it will not accept the password. In order to get anywhere I have to press enter three times to get to a black screen with ?F1 to reboot, F2 to setup". Pressing F1 results in a beep then the same line comes up again. I then press F2 to get to the blue screen where all I can do to get past it is to go to maintenance then load defaults then after pressing save and exit it reboots again. Sometimes it will then load the normal windows screen but mostly it takes me back to the start again at the white password screen.

Also whenever I try to download anything or open the disk drive a killer blue screen appears with the message " KERNAL_STACK_INPAGE_ERROR" and "STOP: 0x00000077 (0xc0000185 0xc0000185 0x00000000 0x06bf3000)"

I would really appreciate anyone?s help on how to correct this problem or if I need to replace any parts or the whole laptop as at the moment it is my only computer and I am struggling without it functioning properly.

Hey everyone, I am facing some problems with my Lenovo Thinkpad T410. The screen acted as seen in the attached photo. I disassembled the laptop following the service manual, took out the LCD screen out of the cover, connected the screen again and it was acting the same, but system etc. started normally. I ordered a new screen on eBay and put aside the disassembled laptop waiting for the part to arrive. When it arrived, I connected the old screen just to check if the computer itself is still fine and there's where problems have begun. When I start the laptop, the cooling fan runs for a few seconds, then stops for 10s and starts to run again at high rpm. The screen doesn't work. The same is for the new screen. External screen connected via VGA doesn't find the signal. What's wrong, what to do?

Hi all,

Found this site and was hoping for some help. A couple weeks ago, I turned on my ASUS G74SX-XR1 and the screen never came on. I took out the battery and discharged the static electricity and my computer started up fine. Well yesterday, after coming back from a vacation where I took my laptop with me and used it all weekend, my laptop screen wouldn't come on again. I tried the same method as before and it still didn't work. Troubleshooting it, I found that the backlight wasn't coming on. Graphics card OK. I saw with a flashlight that the computer was running, but it was running Startup Repair. This worried me. I let the computer set for a day and today it starts up fine, backlight and all. But, now my laptop connects to the router, but with no internet access both wireless and wired connections neither at home or at school. Also, some basic startup programs that I've never had a problem with, are now crashing on startup. Can these two problems be related? Or is it an inverter going out and corruption of files?

A:Computer startup problems, now won't connect to internet and programs crash on startup

it depends what programs are failing ... as for the backlight if you can see it with a flash light then it is the inverter board... hook the computer up to monitor start the computer in safe mode and check the windows logs and see what it is thats crashing ....

Hello all
Windows 7 Pro 64bit Retail version was installed on a Dell M4300 on a Samsung SSD and worked flawless. I sold the Dell and kept the SSD. I had iTunes on the SSD and synced to my iPhone with music and pictures.

I tried to boot the Win 7 Pro SSD build on a Lenovo T430 and it won't boot. I tried the Win 7 DVD to repair it with no luck yet. The Diagnosis and repair details: are very long and I can't copy and paste it. So this is just a few lines.
Boot status indicates that the OS booted successfully.
Session details
System Disk = \Device\Harddisk0
Windows directory = C\Windows
AutoChk Run = 0
Number of root causes = 1
A patch is preventing the system from starting.

Repair action: System files integrity check and repair
Result: Failed. Error code = 0x490

I typed diskpart, then list disk, and Disk 0 and Disk 1 are displayed. Disk 1 is 22 GB and msata. Neither have an asterisk ( * ) to the left of "Disk x"

Any suggestions?

I don't want to resync my phone and all that associated stuff that is why I really really really want this SSD to boot.

I have a Dell Inspiron 1721 and have had it for about 2 years. It has been working perfectly until recently, the display started to display pink lines and it became pixelated.

I tried restarting it and it was fine until the same thing happened again, this kept happening for a while, I thought it may be overheating but I always mount the laptop on books etc so that the fan is exposed. Then to make things worse, after restarting it again, it would go to the loading screen and then the display would just go black.

I went to a local repair guy who cleaned out the fan and it was working fine for a day or two then back to the same problem. Except now there is no loading screen, the power light is on and i can hear the fan working but thats it.

Is my laptop beyond repair? Has the heat perhaps fried some hardware part? Any ideas?

Thanks for reading this and hopefully offering a solution

Hey, I am trying to fix my stepdads Gateway laptop with Vista and no service pack. This laptop has numerous viruses that I tried to get rid of by downloading AVG anti virus. Also I downloaded AD-Aware and scaned with both and deleted several malware files. These viruses have been on here for a long time so they were very hard to delete and I got several BSOD errors during this process, and it took awhile.

I then went to install SP1 and it restarted to the windows screen like it should and said it was configuring updates step 1 of 3 and so on. Next it restarted and now here is the problem.

After getting the windows loading bar the screen turns black and there is only a single line of text that keeps changing, it seems to be running through some files. It will say like: (546/87665) # of files, and the first number keeps getting higher, but it will just stop at a file and do nothing so I would have to restart the laptop and try startup repair, also tried system restore but it just stops doing anything with no hard drive movement for a long time so I restart and get the same problem.

I want to use advanced startup options but cant seem to get to it, I only have F2, F10 and really when I restart my only options are start windows normally or use startup repair.

To make it all worse I just got my A+ certification and I really dont want to re-install windows. I need help on this one!

Should a laptop fan initiate at power on as a rule or is that laptop specific? My Lenovo fan spins up at power on but my Acer does not. In fact I don't see that the fan ever spins on the Acer and it does get quite hot to touch. Anyone else out there with Acer laptops?

A:laptop fan at startup

I have an Acer laptop and the fan doesn't blow much unless I'm doing something really processor heavy. Then it runs fairly fast. I think they just run at a low speed normally. At least mine does, and it's brand new.

Check the "Power Options" in control panel, and make sure that the "Processor Power Management/System Cooling Policy" in the Advanced settings for your plan is set to "Active".

Hello everyone.

I have an HP Envy laptop of Windows 7 with 4gbs of ram, I3, and a terabyte of storage.

It was working fine until this morning, when I pressed tthepower button and it went straight to a loading bar that said "Windows is loading files".

After it loaded, it went to a silver background with Startup repair, which would do a scan to try to repair any disk errors.

I don't know what to do and I can't get to the desktop!

Thanks in advance!

Suddenly laptop shut down nd getting starup

I am using Windows XP Professional. When I start up my laptop, Dell Inspiron 8200, I get the following message:

“Warning: 70 watt AC adapter detected. System will not be capable of running in full performance mode without a 90 watt AC adapter.
Press F1 to continue booting in battery optimized mode, or F2 to shut down.”

After pressing F1, the next screen says:

“Please select the operating system to start:
MS Windows XP Professional”

Then it starts a 30 second countdown. If I press Enter, it goes on to load the system. If I don’t, then it counts down for 30 seconds and then loads the system.

This happens when the laptop is connected with the AC Adapter.

If the laptop is running only on the battery, it only goes to the 30 second countdown mode.

Is there any fix to getting rid of both of these screens on startup?
Thanks and have a great day.

Hi Everyone,

I'm posting because my HP dv1000 laptop (a hand me down from my father, so I'm unsure how old it is) refuses to start up. When I turn it on, the lights and fan work, but the screen remains black. I've tried seeing if it's visible at different angles and I've checked the ac adaptor, with no changes. I've also tried the F1-F12 buttons, and none of them are working.
I'm starting college soon, and would hate to have to buy another computer, so if anyone has any suggestions, they would be greatly appreciated,

A:hp laptop wont startup

Hi there @deadgodz,  I understand that you are unable to start your HP 15 Notebook PC. I will do my absolute best to help you resolve the start up issue you are experiencing. To better assist you, if the steps below do not resolve the issue, please provide me with your Model Number (How Do I Find My Model Number or Product Number?) and Which Windows Operating Systems you are running. Before I provide troubleshooting documentation for you to use, I would like to take a minute to welcome you to the HP Support Community! Note: please make sure that the AC adapter cable is not plugged into a power strip, surge protector, or secondary power source. It should be directly into a wall outlet. Please note remove any and all USB devices. Disconnect all non-essential devices, as these could cause some issues. Did you happen to try removing dust from the notebook? If you remove the notebook battery, plug the AC power cable back into the notebook, then turn it on, does it power the Notebook? Do you have any beep codes or blinking LED lights? If you do have blinking Caps Lock or Num Lock LED's, how many times does it blink in each interval? Have you done a BIOS reset?Have you tried performing a hard reset? If the computer is on, do you hear the fan running?  If you require further assistance, I would be more than happy to help! Please just re-post with the information required from above. Please let me know ... Read more

I was given an HP Compaq laptop with XP Pro, SP3. It had been working until a couple of days ago when it started going as far as the "Welcome" screen then it gets a BSOD. No error messages and the mouse and keyboard still work. It doesn't freeze, it just quits working at that point. If I let it set for 10 minutes, the screensaver comes on and eventually shuts down like laptops do to save power.

Things I've tried:
1. Safe Mode. It gets to the black safe mode screen but quits just before the start button and icons appear.

2. Tried using the cmd prompt and it says the "Systems Restore" has been turned off.

3. Ran the Windows HDD and memory checks and they are OK.

4. Tried two different boot disks and right after the initial screen where you select what to do, it appears as if Windows takes over and goes as far as the Welcome screen and stops.

5. Tried F1, 8, ,10, 11, and 12 trying to get to the recovery partition. F11 and 12 do nothing. I get other menu's but nothing to do with recovery.

6. Tried "boot to last known good configuration". Still goes only to the Welcome screen.

7. Tried "MSconfig from cmd prompt and selected "diagnostic startup". I did not get any diagnostic stuff, same old blue screen after the Welcome screen. When exiting MSconfig, I selected the "restart" option but it just shut down and did not restart.

8. Tried disabling all startup items in MSconfig, no change

Needless to say, I di... Read more

A:Laptop Startup puzzle (for me)

Hi, Edited: I want to add this link for help:

*This applies only IF able to obtain the Recovery disk!

Scroll way down the page...."Preparing the hard drive for Recovery"-- since, you might need to do those tasks in case something is wrong with the drive partitions. Sometimes, these need to be done, sometimes just the Recovery disk will do.

You should be able to purchase the Recovery disk here:

I've used them to purchase HP sets and Compaq sets and they are the same quality as originals....they work well.

They come with instructions, basically the same as you would do- boot up with the first disk in the tray and follow the directions....you have to press the key "F" to start the Recovery.

They have a toll free # and live chat, if anyone can help you they can. The disk set is just $27.00 if they can provide it. I don't see any available at HP/Compaq either but it might pay you to call them and ask....

You may want to update the Compaq softwares and look for system updates at the support site for your computer after doing the Full Recovery.

Then you will of course need to install antivirus programs, etc that you did have installed and need to use. You will be getting Windows Updates as well.
Hope this helps.

I have a Toshiba satellite A105-S4074 laptop. I have Windows media center.Computer freezes after operating system fully loaded. I was able to start the computer eventually using sysconfig. Laptop would run fine for a day then freeze after turning it on. One day it works fine the next day it crashes. I force the computer off and enter safe mode. Then using sysconfig was able to eventaully load windows.

I did upgrade ram from 1 gb to 4 gb and did not encounter problems. I ran disk check in safe mode. I was using verizon connect manager for internet access and that would freeze so I deleted the program. I was planning to reformat the hard drive or restore by I lost the original disks. It seems something in the startup files is causing the crash. Toshiba did not offer any advice.
