DHCP not assigning IP to a device causes windows 7 not to finish loading

Q: DHCP not assigning IP to a device causes windows 7 not to finish loading

The day before yesterday I started having this problem. I do have a very inconsistent internet connection (ISP is absolutely the worst ever, but the only one I can get where I live). However, I've had this computer with the same connection and the same LAN
configuration for about 2 years and never had a problem like this before.
When it first happened I had been using the computer a few hours before, and then the problem started when I tried to turn it on again later. Windows would start until the login sound played, the desktop and its icons were displayed, but the system tray
icons wouldn't finish loading, and the wireless connection icon would show as searching for network (http://k30.kn3.net/8/8/2/3/D/0/023.jpg). Everything else was frozen. I tried ctrl+shift+esc but I wasn't able to open anything, not even with win+R
to execute a command. So I had to force shutdown and start in safe mode. I disabled all wireless adapters and then restarted in normal mode and everything was ok. I rolled back my wireless driver and enabled it and it seemed to work. But then again I had the
same problem today.
Looking at the event viewer I see there is a recurring error named "Microsoft-Windows-DHCP Client Events/Admin" with opcode "IpAddressNotAssigned": "Your computer was not assigned an address from the network (by the DHCP Server)
for the Network Card." and it indicates a mac address. Error code is 0x79.
I took a look at ipconfig /all and saw that the mac address mentioned in the error code belongs to "Microsoft Virtual WiFi Miniport Adapter" which I don't seem to be using. I'm leaving the one I use enabled: "Ralink RT5390R 802.11b/g/n 1x1
Wi-Fi Adapter".
I don't recall installing anything or making any changes to my system before that. I had installed some windows updates 2 days before the problem started, but my computer had continued working normally after that (and I had turned it off and on with no issue).
I have a HP Envy dv7 laptop running Win 7 Home Premium SP1.
Anyway, I'm intrigued as to why this started happening now and what could be causing it.
Any clues?

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

I'm trying to connect a Dell Dimension 8250 to my local network, and it will not assign an IP address to either the wireless or the LAN. Both my wireless and my LAN networks are DHCP, and all other computers connected to both networks right now are assigning IPs and connecting to the internet just fine. I reinstalled the drivers in the Device Manager, but they were already up-to-date and that made no difference. I tried disabling the wireless and just connecting with the LAN, but it still wouldn't assign an IP. No matter what I do, I get "Limited or no connectivity." Anyone have any other ideas for me to try?

Thank you so much in advance!

Hi folks. My office setup has:
A modem/router, a router and four PCs.
All works fine so far. However I've been looking at changing the setup so the all of my PCs will have static addresses so I can access them remotely without having to have someone check what their address are.

The modem/router ( a slow wireless speed, so I used the second one (, which has a faster wireless side to it.(Each connected hardwire)
The modem router has DHCP enabled (Starting at
I've managed to change one PC to static OK, which works fine, and still have 3 on dynamic.
Here lies the problem. I should only now need 3 addresses assigned by DHCP.
Instead I find that if I don't have 4 addresses available then the 3 won't work.

I'm worried that there may be an interloper afoot.
Any advice from you experts.

Hi Everyone,

I have a strange networking situation. Let me start by saying this situation is on a Domain, and that I am using Windows 2011 SBS and Windows 7 clients.

My server has a DHCP range of 192.x.x.150 to 192.x.x.199 - and all other I.P. addresses are static.

On a workstation located at I.P. 192.x.x.13 I am seeing an address conflict.

When I perform an "nbtstat -a 192.x.x.13" command from the server I am given the logical computer name of a staff members personal laptop.

Investigation of the laptop reveals that it is set to DHCP, and clearly the address of 192.x.x.13 is outside of my servers DHCP scope, so this I.P. should never be assigned, let alone in duplicate.

I Googled this topic before posting, and it was suggested that IPv6 could be having an adverse affect. I determined this because I performed a ping on the laptop and only got a MAC address back rather than an I.P. address.

However after unticking IPv6, and rebooting, the laptop is still causing havoc.

I can set a static I.P. address on the laptop, however this is not ideal.

If anybody knows of any way that I can stop this from happening it will be greatly appreciated.

Kind Regards,

A:DHCP assigning address outside of Scope

Hi Everyone,

Further to my earlier post here is a screen shot of both ipconfig & Control Panel settings on the Laptop:

I have actually managed to fix this by -

1). Changing the IPv4 settings to static - and assigning the address in question (e.g.192.x.x.13)
2). Subsequently changing the IPv4 settings back to "Obtain an IP address automatically"

The laptop now reports an I.P. address of 192.x.x.174 (Preferred), which is actually within the DHCP scope of my Server!

hey guys .... i have dsl running in my office thru mpower communications ... since a week ago ... i can't connect to the internet ... in the notification area ... (icon with two monitors), the "sending" part is flashing but not the "receiving" one ... when i do the ipconfig/all, i get the 169 ip address, ... i did the loopback address and i get all the replies ... i manually configured the ip setting but still the same thing. i ran the winsock fix ... same thing. the funny thing is i took the computer to the other location and i can connect to the internet. and according to my co-worker, two days ago mpower tech came to my office and ran the internet connection thru his laptop and it worked ... so i don't know what the problem is ... is there something in the registry that can prevent communication with certain modem? i've done pretty much all the possible fixes and i just can't get it to work ... i used a cd, that's included with the router, that can check the internet connection but couldn't get it. does anybody know how to fix this thing. thank you

When you manually enter in the IP information , can you ping other local computers by IP address.

Can you ping the IP address of the gateway (router)

Can you ping the actual external DNS IP addresses

Like the title says, I am having trouble connecting to the internet. It seems like DHCP is not working, though it is running. I have tried disabling ipv6, setting up a static ip and neither worked. It persists if windows firewall is turned off. After some time it does successfully connect to the internet, but whenever it restarts or the lease expires, poof goes the connection.

With that said, I've read your questions and I am looking into it right now. If someone else knows more already, they'll post.

While playing a flash game, my daughter complained that the mouse had stopped responding. Nothing could be selected and not even ctl alt del worked. I had no option but to shut down using the power switch.
When I switched it back on, it loads normally till the windows welcome screen which seems darker than usual and nothing happens from here. There is no indication of anything loading. I've left it for ages and come back to find it still on that page.
I've tried to start in safe mode, but it comes up with the black screen and a few lines of text (something about devices) then hangs there.
I have also tried to start at the last known workable point, but that won't load either.

Any ideas what I can do to try and resolve this problem.

I had the same problem before but it was with Win2K. My problem was there was some spyware that prevented the Windows Update from working correctly, so that might be your case. Have you scanned your computer for any viruses or spyware lately? Also are you running a firewall? If so try turning it off then running Windows Update. Hope this helps.

Having a problem with an XP installation. The machine is running the home version of the OS and upgrading to Pro is not an option. It is used in a network environment. The machine has a media card reader, FDD, two optical drives, and a partitioned HDD.

Upon inserting a USB keychain drive, a drive letter is assigned to the device. Unfortunately, it's a drive letter corresponding to one of the network drives.

Sure - I know - Right Click/Manage/Disk Managment/select the offending drive and change the letter. BUT!!! That only lasts as long as the device is inserted into the port. Upon removal and re-insertion the device reverts to the network drive letter. So, back in I go and change it. I'm getting tired of doing this. I've searched the registry for keys related to the drive letter without success. I've searched the net for help and only find basic information.

Any scripts or hacks that can be applied to PERMANENTLY reserve/assign a drive letter for the USB device?

While I've not been on the "Zone" in a very long time, it's more than likely a problem with them, not you. I used to get that crap sometimes as well. Sometimes it just takes forever for the page to load & if you try to go beyond that before it's finished, you'll get that message.

Properly programmed SPD device data is required for reliable operation.

Huh....There are 2 (512) sticks installed. 1 is 3200 and 1 is 2700 ( which should be fine??) I removed 1, then retried and same thing, I removed the other and tried...SOS

Recently my computer doesn't fully load some pages. It will load most of a page but not all. This is on pages I go to all the time, ebay, forums, news papers etc. They usually load instantly. I also can not finish a speed test. I have comcast service. When i use their speed test it starts out doing 90 mbps but when it gets to about 90% finished with the test it slows down and never finishes. Ping is 14. That also worked fine a couple days ago.

Lately when I start my computer it usually takes a minute or two to load everything, but then when I try to click on any icon nothing happens. If I run the mouse over the toolbar at the bottom of the screen I see the hourglass instead of the arrow which I am used to seeing.
Anyways, I have to shut it down cold since nothing will work and I usually do this 2-3 times and then it finally loads completely. I can use the cont/alt/del feature and nothing is showing any action except for "system idle process" which is at 98%. I have tried running all the usual virus scans/adaware/spybot.....everything looks fine. The computer runs just fine after it finally loads. And I have waiting a half hour or so before trying to click on anything and some days it is still not fully loaded yet. It seems like it is just getting hung up somewhere just when its almost finished loading.

A:Computer won't finish loading at startup

The system idle process value is normal. It has to do something and that something is 98% idle. Don't get worried about that one.

Post a HJT log to see what programs you're running in the background. Also, what antivirus program do you use?

I restarted my computer this morning after blowing out the accumulated dust. I do this routinely but this time it was because the video card was acting up. When I restarted it, it booted to the desktop where it started loading processes (before desktop icons appear).

It loads the processes very slowly getting to around 45 processes after about 10 minutes. Often it is only using 1% or 2% of the CPU.

Then it goes into what appears to be a loop where "system" uses 2% of the CPU every few seconds then turns off then a few seconds later runs again for about a second.

This PC normally ends up running about 65 processes. I have tried to restore to a previous date but for some reason, that failed.

Any idea how I could get this back to operational would be appreciated. i have already removed the vid card and am now using the onboard video.

This is a Gigabyte motherboard GA-MA78GM-S2HP and I am running an AMD processor and 4 Gb Ram

When I open either one of my browsers, IE8 or Firefox, my home page usually loads without delay. But, once I try to load a web page, I will get a perpetual blank screen or a partial screen for that web page or what seems to be the entire page but the info bar below shows items still loading. I almost never get the word "Done" at the bottom.

If I click on refresh over & over, I can sometimes get the page to finish loading, but not always. This happens when I select a link from a Google search, when I select a link in my Favorites or Bookmarks or when I enter the url directly into the address bar. I can't make sense of it at all.

It happens to all websites, including this one, so I'm pretty sure it's not the security of a website that is giving me trouble. It happens when I try to go to Microsoft, HP, Dell or many other sites which I would consider safe.

Any help would be appreciated!

A:Black screen when win 98 finish loading

Did you set your resolution too high after trying to play the game? It's possible that the refresh rate or the resolution you have selected is too high for your monitor to handle.

Try booting in safe mode by holding the CTRL key before Windows 98 loads. See if your screen will come back after that.

Good afternoon people

I hope everyone is having a good day so far. Anyway.....my blasted computer

First off..I'm using windows xp, and IE 7 on a Dell dimension 4300

1. takes forever to load pages..sometimes doesn't load them at all, that little blue loading circle just...keeps..turning. OR it will load half the page, or the outline of the page, or say it's done...but it's not..aaahhhh

2. freezes quite a bit...sometimes when i'm halfway thru something or even when the computer is first turned on and I click on the internet....frozen

3. "internet explorer cannot dispay web page" that's my favorite

4. totally ignores commands given to it...if i'm canoing around on the internet, and click on some pages, it just ignores the command...little blue wheel turning, but no loading bars on the bottom of the page or even "detecting proxy settings" or "waiting for" whatever. It has decided it doesn't want to play anymore..aarrgghh. Have to close what I'm doing and restart

5. I don't know if that has to do with the site I'm on or the computer, but if I'm on a logged into page, say ebay etc..I log in, go to where I need to go for 2 secs, go back and the page says.."page has expired" I am constantly relogging into some of my sites..can you say frustrating.

I'm quite sure I've missed some things, but this is a start. You know how it is, when you sit down and want to write ab... Read more

This is going to be the weirdest question. I just posted a hjt log. After I've done that and settle down to wait for someone to take pity on me, what do I do with the logs on my screen. There are 2, of course. One is the notepad one that I've copied to you guys, and the other is the original log from HJT. Do I just close them? Minimize them? Will the original show up in the HJT log link currently residing on my desktop?

Did I mention this was the most crazy question you've gotten all day Feel free to laugh at me..I'm laughing at myself for not remembering what to do. I posted a log L....O....N...G time and forgot what to do next. Eeekkk. A senior moment

I have all the windows updates installed.

I had a power cut yesterday and since then my PC does not finish booting into Windows (XP SP3).

I get through the post screen, windows start-up and all the way to my desktop (no welcome screen set-up), however it takes forever (literally) to load all the desktop icons, system tray applications and "unlock" (hour glass) the taskbar. I have left it for 2 hours and it is still not in a state where it is responsive. I can move the mouse and the system does respond, so it is not crashed (even if it takes 10minutes for a right click menu to appear). When I attempt to shut-down (through the Task manager) almost every .exe process comes up as if it has crashed.

I have started in SAFE MODE (with networking) which works fine. Steps completed so far (through safe mode):

Re-installed audio and graphics drivers
Disabled all network devices.
Completed a system restore (to a date before the problem).
Used msconfig to disable various start-up applications.
Tried to restart explorer.exe and open explorer.exe as a net task through Task Manager.

and nothing has made any difference.

Any help is much appreciated.

A:XP - Desktop doesn't finish loading

It possible you have a corrupt pagefile. Do you know how to turn off pagefiling?

If so, turn off pagefiling then restart the computer. Once restarted then enable pagefiling again to whatever you had before. This will give you a new pagefile - but you will need to restart your computer once more for it to take effect.

If you don't know how to disable pagefiling then please say and we'll walk you through it.

Recently, I am suddenly sometimes unable to load web pages or otherwise download information over the internet. When I first open a page it will sometimes load completely but usually it will fail to load the entire contents of the page. Opening a new tab in the browser and trying to load the same page again fails completely. If I close all tabs and try to reload the page afresh it sometimes works.

I am also noticing constant low level internet traffic, both sending and receiving.

I'm running Windows XP SP3 in a multi-boot environment. My browser of choice is firefox but the same thing happens in IE.

I don't have this problem on any other machine on the network, nor do I have the same problem in Windows 7 on the same machine.

I have scanned all drives using a fully updated (today) Malwarebytes from my Windows 7 install with no infections detected. I run Zonealarm and AVG under Windows XP.

I have tried clearing internet files.

I have tried running Windows XP in safe mode with networking only and the problem still occurs.

I have taken a HJT log just in case. I'm pretty sure it's clean though.

I forgot to mention, I can ping google.com consistently so I don't think it's a DNS issue.

A Non-browser example

When I try to update AVG I see the "Dowload Speed" starts high then slowly tails down to bytes/sec and gradually drops to 0 bytes/sec

I hope it's something simple!

For the past few days, I've been having a problem with all of my internet browsers (Firefox, IE, and Safari). When I load them up, they work for about 10 minutes or so, but then they stop loading the contents of a URL (I can press the buttons on the browsers, so it hasn't frozen). Additionally, when I go into the task manager to end the process for Firefox, it doesn't end and stays on the list. Can someone please help me figure out how to fix this? I use Win10 on a fast broadband connection (100Mbps) will lowish ping rates.

I notice that more and more web sites are taking a long time to finish loading. They start very fast indeed, but are incomplete and it can take up to a minute before the screen has finished jumping around as it re-renders itself. This appears to be caused by the site pulling-in images from third party sites, especially for adverts.

This has become a real inconvenience. Is this the fault of the website developer? Is there a better way of feeding-in these third part elements? Is there anything I can do my end to improve this?

I am on a 4G connection and someone suggested I change a buffer setting on the router? Anyone comment on that?

Run a speed test.

Hi, I have windows xp media center editon, with all appropriate updates. It froze up, got a blue screen, tried to restart and it stopped loading windows just when the cursor arrow should have shown up. I unplugged it (only way I could turn it off) tried to load win xp in safemode, all the different ways, all I got was a list of all these files and then it just froze with list of files. I do not have a win xp media edition cd as it was loaded on comuter when I go it. At this point all I want to do is get my files off there. right before this froze up, my email program downloaded an update. I do not know what diff file names mean or what there sequence means either. Is there an easy way for me to just get windows loaded so I can transfer my files. I don't have a hard copy of my back ups

A:xp media editon wont finish loading.

backup your files with an ubuntu live cd once your files are backed up, if you have an XP CD (anyone will do) Boot off of the XP CD and get to the Recovery Console. Here type chkdsk /R and press enter. The Check Disk utility will try and fix any file errors.

Up until about a week ago, this loaded fine on any pc on my LAN.

Now however, it just continues to load... the main page loads, but the data never appears and the 'loading' swirls under each data section simply keen spinning.

Everyone else I've asked can access the site fine (so its not a external site problem), but all three of the pcs hooked into my LAN (standard network with Asus WL600g router) can no longer access the site properly.

I've cleared cache on local machines etc, but with no luck

It's very odd and I have no idea what's causing it -- something within the router? But I can't find what...

Any help would be most appreciated!

Hello everyone.

About two days ago, I went to sleep letting my computer finish an update to Windows Media Player 11. The next morning I found that my browsers no longer will finish loading any form of web page.

Yesterday I completed a virus scan to have found a trojan, but I'm no longer sure how much damage it could have caused, and I'm not even sure if the the trojan is the culprit. Here's all that I know:

- I'm running Windows XP Home, SP3
- Instant Messengers, like AIM, function properly.
- Firefox opens normally, begins to load the Google front page, and stops halfway through the communication process (IE just locks and crashes).
- Upon reboot, many of the programs checked on my startup list inside msconfig will not start up after all, among those being AIM, my wireless utility program, my anti-virus, and others.
- I've taken a look at my services but without knowing what was already on and already off, that was a dead end.
- my ex, and current roomate, had the same kind of behavior once, and the next day, the problem had went away. I don't think this is that simple.
- The two most current events have been installing, and thusly uninstalling WMP 11, and the fact that I cancelled my home phone line, who also was my past ISP, but I should have been on a completely different ISP.

I'm trying every option i can without having to install XP again. Once again, the behavior didn't begin until the computer had an automatic restart after installing WMP 11. Un... Read more
