Q: Vista cpu running high %. IE8 locks up. Running slow. Please help

Hello,
I have a Vista laptop and the cpu % is running very high and IE 8 locks up alot. I've run various virus/spyware scans that found some instances but it hasn't fully done the trick. I've attached the HighJackThis log. Any help would be great.

Preferred Solution: Vista cpu running high %. IE8 locks up. Running slow. Please help

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

I have a Toshiba Satellite  running windows 7. I got the computer from my father and had to remove a lot of malware and games. I wish i could do a factory reset but i do not have any of the factory disks. It seems like there are a lot of processes running and the physical memory is almost always at 100%. Any help would greatly be appreciated . Thanks in advance.

A:Toshiba laptop running super slow. physical memory running high

You can first try this:
http://www.howtogeek.com/74523/how-to-disable-startup-programs-in-windows/

Then you can try removing all the junk files on it using CCleaner or BleachBit or something similar. If that doesn't help, I would recommend dual booting this PC with Ubuntu 14.04. I actually published a tutorial on doing that here:
http://69.107.93.24/Blog/52015/

You could then use that as your primary OS.

My CPU usage meter runs real high, sometimes all the way up to 100%, even when the PC is idle and not doing anything! This is really slowing my system down. I'm thinking it could be some kind of virus or spyware. Please help! Here are my scans.

I have tried to go through all of the steps listed for a computer running slow and for the Malware removal but I'm having no luck. I have a fairly new Windows Vista machine that runs with 80% or more CPU usage even just after startup.

It is impossible to use some programs that we really need to use on this machine (like AutoCad) and the others are just so slow that we avoid this computer.

I have two other computers both running Windows XP that are much faster but this is the newest computer and it's very frustrating not to be able to use it. Maybe I need more RAM or something like that but not being a computer whiz I don't know what to do now.

ANY help you could provide would be GREATLY appreciated.

Here is my DSS log (I'm not sure why but this file C:\Deckard\System Scanner\extra.txt does not exist).

Ok, for the past few weeks, I had been getting a message that said a resource was missing, but I stupidly never wrote down what specifically was gone. It said that it could not open the Dell Dock because of it and windows explorer was running slow at times and restarting periodically. It did this for about three weeks, then, two nights ago, the computer froze, so I reset it, and it started on the green bar then black screen loop.

I tried running it in safe mode, no dice, and all other alternate boot options. It would hang up each time. Finally, I was able to get the system restore wizard up, this was earlier today, and reset the system to how it was 4 days ago. It actually opened Vista, but in low res mode and everything is painfully slow, except for the internet, which runs at normalish speeds.

Are there any possible causes or solutions for this?

I have a Dell Inspiron 530, and Windows Vista Home Premium 64 bit.

I do have a Windows XP Home Edition Reinstall disk

Over the last few weeks, my PC has been having fits running slow, locking up, 1 BSOD (KERNEL.STACK_INPAGE_ERROR), stuttering sound, windows getting locked, mouse pausing and freezing, etc. It frequently requires hard boots as it won't respond to Ctrl-Alt-Delete. This happens in safe mode as well.

The CPU usage is often stuck at 100%, even with no applications running. I can't see any pattern to it. It can run fine for a few hours, then suddenly get stutter and lock up.

The only thing has changed recently is that a week or two before this started happening, the CMOS battery was giving error messages on reboots, so I replaced it. I have not been able to see anything wrong in the BIOS settings. Device Manager gives no errors.

I haven't seen any signs of malware, but just in case, I have attached the normal logs. I run ZoneAlarm Free and Microsoft Security Essentials. Virus scans have been negative. I also ran Lavasoft Ad-Aware, but it found nothing other than harmless cookies.

I have cleaned/vacuumed out the system (which I do regularly anyway). I removed and reseated all the cards and memory. I checked that all the fans were working.

I have run CleanUp! (also a normal thing on my routine maintenance). The disk is not fragmented. I removed what programs and autoruns I was sure about.

I ran Chkdsk and it fixed some file ... Read more

Hey y'all
I have a problem with my PC. Sometimes when I leave my computer on and leave it idle for a while and then come back to it the whole thing will be locked up. I can move the mouse around but as soon as I click something it will lock up and the time will be locked to the time when it had locked up. The whole thing basically locks up causing the green vista loading mouse circle to replace the pointer. The only way to shut it off is to hold down the power button for about 5seconds. Is this a hardware issue or a software issue? I'm boggled by this.

Specs are as follows:
Intel Core 2 quad Q6600 (2.4Ghz)

Nvidia 9500GS

My computer, a HP Pavilionzv6000 laptop with Win XP, runs slower that it used to. I don't know how many programs are running that don't need to be running. I may have a virus because every time the AVG program runs, it finds a virus. Sometimes it can't fix the problem so I put it in the vault. I have the Zone Alarm firewall set on High. Also, often the computer just locks up and ai have to disconnect the power cord, and remove the battery to reboot it when no keystroke functions.

Please help!

hi,,,, am i lead to believe that you now think this is not a security issue hence you posted here, (if you do think its a security issue you need to post in the correct forum.) take a look in event viewer for more info related to the crashes,, also post back any info or error codes, also take a look in task manager to see if there are any processes that are using up all the CPU, post those back too, also look in device manager for any yellow triangles and red X's and lastly look in reliability monitor for info,,, click on any red X's in there and post back the info. hopefully its just a dodgy driver. to find all these just type in to search box in start menu.
good luck.

Computer has been running extremely slow. Also Any web browser I use (IE, Safari, Firefox) It has been popping up the "encountered a problem" pop up where it gives you "Debug" "Send Error Report" or "Don't Send" I have Tried them all and it still keeps popping up.
Also, I have been having the Can not diplay page ALL the time, Other computers in the house can display them but it wont come up on the first try. It takes a couple times. Its not all the pages it does it on but some pages it does it constantly.

Hijack This Log is below, if someone could review it and see if there are any problems or something i could fix would be great.
thanks.

A:fan running high on vista!

Whats the computer. There is a good chance that your computer is just running harder than it did on XP and the fans are trying to just do their job.

If you are using an old XP fan monitor I'd say thats the problem and uninstall it.

A:High CPU & General Slow Running

Hi Brooksie, welcome to TSF

IMPORTANT!:

Before we can proceed any further, please visit the Microsoft's Windows Update Page and install ALL Critical Updates for your system (except service pack 2 [SP2]). SP2 should only be installed on a fully disinfected system. At the minimum install at least SP1a for both XP and IE6. Without these updates your system is wide open to re-infection and we are both wasting our efforts to clean your system. After we have completed your clean-up, we will have you return to the Windows Update page and install SP2. We will also then advise you on how to better protect yourself online.

Please apply those updates BEFORE posting your next log. It is this forum's policy to stop the disinfection process until these basic updates are done. If during the updating process you get a message that your product key is invalid ....then you may not have a legitimate copy of Windows XP. Unfortunately it?s also this forums policy that we only address users with a legal copy of Windows XP.... therefore if you can not update Windows XP to SP1 we must stop the cleansing process here.

I was very pleased with the help I received today for one of my laptops I thought I would have you all take a look at the HJT log for my desktop which is also having troubles although not as serious as my laptop was. I realize I have a lot of crap on this computer and I can get rid of much of it.

I am going to go through the normal Ewido / Activescan options now to check that.

Thanks for the assistance.

I have just built my own PC (i7 5820k, GTX 970, 32GB memory) and quite often it suddenly becomes slow and unresponsive. I have ran checks on my HDD's and SSD and they say there is nothing wrong, also my GPU, CPU and memory never runs more than around 10%. Restarting the computer fixes the issue.

How can I troubleshoot this problem?

Below is a screenshot of my task manager whilst the PC is slow.

Hello blindreaper and Welcome to TSG!

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop

Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
Click the Scan for Vundo button.
Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log in a reply to this thread.
Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove. In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button" when VundoFix appears upon rebooting.
I would like you to generate a "Add/Remove Software list" log using the HijackThis application. Here is how you can do this:

To get an Uninstall List from HijackThis:

Open HijackThis, click Config, click Misc Tools
Click "Open Uninstall Manager"
Click "Save List" (generates uninstall_list.txt)
Click Save, copy and paste the results in your next post.
In your next reply, please include these log(s):
* vundofix.txt
* HijackThis Uninstall List
* HijackThis log (new)
Also, please let me know how things are running now and if you encountered any problems while you were following the instructions I posted.

Earlier today I noticed as I turned on my notebook computer (Dell Inspirion 5150), that the fan was running on high speed. Occasionally, this occurs, but for some reason today, it wouldn't seem to slow down. I turned the computer off several times today, and each time I power it back up, the fan cuts on high. Also I've noticed that it's running a lil slower than normal. My computer usage was at 100%. Now, it has slowed down to 7-8%..somewhere around there, but the fan is still running on high. It may slow to medium speed, but quickly returns to high. I tried to restore my computer to see if that would help, but it wouldn't restore. Can anyone tell me what the problem may be?

Apologies for dropping my last thread relating to computer hangs, but it somehow got fixed by itself (I think I did something to fix it, but I didn't remember it long enough to post the solution).

I now have another issue, which has been here since the beginning - my computer is having issues with being slow. When browsing internet, I tend to get the random slow period where something locks up or doesn't load as fast, maybe even some archiver freeze or a program randomly going "Not Responding" - things of that sort.

I wouldn't really midn it, but it does happen way too often for my computer which is supposed to be rated atleast "good" and I am completely confused as to why is this happening.

NOTE - this is not even happening in gaming, most of my slow issues are when browsing the internet, using Windows Explorer and other outside-of-gaming programs, which means that my computer can do the most demanding tasks, but not the basic ones.

I don't know what information to provide to help you guys troubleshoot it, so just tell me and I'll give all that's needed.

I know it's malware or a virus. There is always a process of iexplore when I don't have the net up, it comes back after I click end process too. I hope someone can help me... I am thinking about bringing it into BestBuy.

I've tried using the msconfig thing, and also have disabled automatic updates...

Nothing seems to work. (By the way, the sound devices are for recording music, so I hope they aren't causing the problem.)

So I have a HP G71 laptop running of Windows 7 with Intel Celeron. It has been getting slower over the last several month and is often running at a ridiculously high CPU usage rate. I have Norton running and ever time I do a full scan it finds nothing which seems unusual, since it is running so slow and also does strange glitchy things.
I'll be quite honest, I am not very computer savvy and I have been trying to figure out how to fix this for a while now with no luck. If anyone has any ideas of what to do, I would be extremely grateful!

Hello,

Im having issues with my Emachine E640.

When browsing websites they are taking an age to load. I then decided to ping google.com and the following results came back
C:\Windows\system32>ping google.com

Pinging google.com with 32 bytes of data:
Reply from: bytes=32 time=74ms TTL=54
Reply from : bytes=32 time=572ms TTL=54
Reply from : bytes=32 time=1121ms TTL=54
Reply from : bytes=32 time=1543ms TTL=54

These differ dramatically from 30 to around 3000.

I have done the following actions without any change,

Reinstalled the drivers, ipconfig/release / renew etc...
But to no avail so if anyone could help it would be much appreciated.

A little more info
Im using Windows 7 x64 , Wireless internet , Atheros AR5B93 Wireless network adapter.

Please help!

Hi, i have recently (around 4 weeks ago) upgraded my laptop to windows 8.1 and I have now found the laptop running very slow. Most of the times I am waiting around for the apps to start up, or waiting for it to respond to my actions i.e. typing, coding, editing images and its got to a stage where I am really getting frustrated.

I have a Sony Vaio SVS13 Model with the following spec:

Operating System
Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit
CPU
Intel Core i7 3540M @ 3.00GHz
Ivy Bridge 22nm Technology
RAM
6.00GB Dual-Channel DDR3 @ 665MHz (9-9-9-24)
Motherboard
Sony Corporation VAIO (N/A)
Graphics
VAIO_LCD ([email protected])
Intel HD Graphics 4000 (Sony)
1024MB NVIDIA GeForce GT 640M LE (Sony)
Storage
698GB TOSHIBA MQ01ABD075H (SATA)
Security
Kaspersky Anti-Virus

The problem I find is that (using Advanced System Care, part of Sony installed software) this shows me that the CPU is always running at 100% and I thought its time I try and work out what the problem is, as I keep getting delayed doing my uni work and im ending up spending more time on work.

I have read a few forums saying that Kaspersky tends to use up alot of CPU but i didnt find this issue when I had Windows 8 so not sure how to fix or find what the problem is.

If somebody could please advise would really appreciate it as would help me out alot.

Thanks in advance.

I was directed by the moderator from this page: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/535736/wallpaper-changing-on-its-own-possible-virus/ to get help on memory test.

It is likely that most malware are removed from running all the scans that was directed by the moderator, however, my computer still retains high memory usage even when no windows are open except for a chrome tab and the resource monitor.
I'm running on 4GB RAM.

Thank you and I appreciate your help.

A:High RAM Usage and slow running computer

Looking at your task manager you have several chrome instances. If I remember right Chrome opens a new instance for every tab. It also doesnt shut down cleanly when you exit. I bet if you close the 1 chrome tab that is open you still have several instances in task manager.

Reboot your PC and report your usage after a reboot without opening Chrome.

In November of last year, my laptop suffered water damage and I needed my hard-drive replaced.

Since then, I have noticed worse performance when playing games, even online Flash ones, and generally much slower Internet, even with videos. One difference from before is the high memory usage; it's running at around 60% with only the browser open, which corresponds to 1.9 GB. When it gets in excess of 70%, things really lag.

I have a customers dell laptop that has windows xp and I gave it a tuneup to try to make it run better and It did help a little but nothing majorly. In the task manager the SYStem cache is very high to me at 446800. I did disable some junk with msconfig from starting I even disable everything that norton 360 starts up just to test how xp runs after norton totally disabled which xp does run little more faster but the Sytem cache is still very high even with norton disabled. What happens is xp is still thrashing the hard drive after the desktop comes up and finishes loading up programs when watching the system tray area next to the time/clock on bottom right hand corner.

Does anyone have any thing to do to make the system cache lower and run xp faster? I was thinking that since xp is an old installition that its time to freshly reinstall xp because after couple year old windows its starts to run sluggish after a while naturally.

Hello! I did a cursory search of the forums for this issue but there are just too many cases to review them all so I figured I would post here anyways.

I'm using a Dell Inspiron 1525 and Windows Vista, and I've been having a lot of problems with it lately... but I have a question about one in particular right now.

My computer is running really slowly (regardless of whether I am online or offline or how many applications I have open). It doesn't take abnormally long to boot up the computer itself, but booting up separate applications takes forever.

My CPU also seems to spend a lot of it's time running at 80% or higher... it's staying between 50% and 60% right now but before I started typing this question it had spent about 10 minutes at 100% usage. I have only two programs open- Firefox and Microsoft Word. (I've since closed Word but I didn't notice any significant difference in CPU usage- it's staying around the same).

While the computer was at 100% CPU usage it was freezing every couple of minutes for just 30 seconds or so. I'd let it process or whatever until it was done freaking out and the usage had come down a bit and then try to type or do an internet search and it would shoot straight back up and freeze again.

I'm also wondering at the number of processes I have running - 77... although I've heard Vista runs a large number of processes and so maybe I shouldn't be worried about this? I've gotten ... Read more

Hi there,

My computer has been running slow for few months now despite having a high speed internet connection. I have tried to fix it by having its set up changed. It didn't fix the problem. It was working fine but one day it suddenly started running slow. At first I thought it must be a problem with the servers of my network provider but that wasn't the case. I've called the cable company to check several times but they said other users were able to use internet in full speed without any problem. I noticed the problem by trying to watch videos from various websites and after this problem occurred, they started loading super, super slowly. It has gotten to a point that I can no longer watch TV shows, movies, and other videos. The only video website that works is YouTube and even that doesn't function completely normally. Only most YouTube videos work without getting stuck too much. Another thing which I must mention is that quite often the internet cuts off in midst of browsing sessions and it doesn't reconnect without restarting the computer. My computer is a Dell laptop pc with Intel core i5 processor. I suspect that maybe my LAN card has worn out and it needs to be replaced. Although, I have been told by some computer technicians to not to do so. But they weren't able to give me any solutions. So here are my questions:

1. Should I get my LAN card changed?
2. If I should get my LAN card replaced, what model do I need that's compatible w... Read more

Hi there, in the past week, I've started to notice my laptop behave more sluggishly and become quite slow when it would have otherwise handled the amount of applications open etc without any problems.

Scans with antiviruses over the past few weeks have flagged up removed so called viruses/ trojans , so I'm not sure whether this may have lead to my laptop suddenly becoming quite slow?

Please help :) Below is the DDS scan result and attached are the other logs requested.

A:Explorer 9 running/loading slow - high physical memory usage

Don't know if this will help, but I noticed in the task manager there is a process running called SED.DAT. I can't find anything about this process from doing an internet search. Under properties the file location shows as C:\Users\Pearson\AppData\Local\Temp\nsvBF0D.tmp

I noticed there is a blank page - Internet explorer entry running in task manager (which keeps coming back even if i manually stop it) and a couple of iexplore processes running in the background although I havene't opened any IE windows.

I don't have any real idea of what the problem could be at this point. I have tried uninstalling unnecessary programs without any change in the way that the computer is behaving. HijackThis won't post a log file and also says that I have been denied write access to the Hosts file.  Any suggestions?
