Q: Solved: Lost My Admin Account Password on XP

Hi everyone. A few months ago, I lost the password to my Admin account on XP. I do not have a password hint. Is there any way to recover the old password or create a new password from my current account? The current account I am using does have Admin priviledges.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi

Ive stumbled across a problem that has been causing me grief for a few days now, every time I try to access my hard drive (C disk) it says, access is denied. Also, i cant edit permissions because I've lost admin rights. Ive tried many things including unlocking the system admin, this lets me access a few extra things like being able to use the sfc command in cmd, however, it doesn't allow me to access the C disk or change permission because it also has lost admin rights? I fear that this is a bad problem and I don't know how it happened. I have tried restoring to a previous date and that doesn't work either.

Any help and/or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Shimin4tor

I just made a non admin user account on my Dell Inspiron (windows xp) laptop. When I went online to sign in under my account (admin) it is no longer there. My name (Penne) is there (and so is my daughters). I click on my name, put my password in and it takes me to the desktop for my daughter and ALL my stuff is gone. PLEASE HELP!!!
I have googled this and the only thing I am seeing is that you need to sign in under an Admin user account to fix this and get my stuff back. THere is NO admin user account so how can I get it all back? I did the F8 and went to restore to previous point and that didnt work. I know there is a way to go to the restore calendar and find a day that her user account was not on there (like last week) so this might work, but I dont know how to find this.
PLEASE help as all of my EVERYTHING is on my user account and I am lost without it all (have a retreat this weekend and I need all of my sheet music and my songs)
Thanks so much,
PENNE

My daughter's laptop is running windows 7 home edition. My wife and I set up an admin account when we purchased it w few years ago. Today when trying to download a malware detection program, it asks for admin account password and it says it has expired. Seems strange as we updated the password less than 3 months ago. The laptop only has my daughter's non-admin account and the one admin acct.

What options do we have to regain admin account access?

Thanks

A:Solved: Admin account password expired

Well, I feel a bit silly, but realize now that if I reboot and select the admin account, it asks me to reset my expired password. I reset PW, set up an additional admin account in case I actually ever do get locked out of the first one, and disabled the password expiration feature.

Hope this helps someone else.

Thanks

After clean installation of XP Pro and setting other user accounts with limited access, As set, Users are asked for their Logon Passwords but not the Admin account. On restarting computer, it boots right direct to my admin account without asking for password which I have already set but when I switch user or log off, then on the logon screen it would ask me for the password.

The firm in which I work has a Lenovo PC with Windows 10 installed. There are two user profiles on the computer, the admin and another normal account without administration rights. We have only the password of the account without administrator rights.

The network administrator had left the company surprisingly in without giving the administrator password of the PC and we cannot contact him anymore.

Now we want to install another programme and we cannot do this without an administrator account.

I disabled secure boot and have tried to boot the PC with an Linux USB Stick, but it do not boot from the stick.

Any suggestion how I either can reset the password of the administrator account or create an new account with administrator rights.

Although there may be techniques to recover a lost password it is forum policy that we do not discuss these here - your best bet would be to visit a local security specialist and get them to recover/reset it for you - and a change to the policy for the replacement admin may be a good idea, I always wrote a list of all passwords and stored it with the Managing Director and also in a fireproof safe

Hi Yet again, Windows is frustratingly taking up all of my time and I have tried everything google has to offer to try and fix it but it seems like no one has screwed up as much as I have on whatever forum. Let me explain the problem: I'm trying to set my account to administrator because I can't install programs, change account settings, make any changes through CMD without getting the system error 5 access denied message and I can't set the administrator account through CMD either. I also don't have the permission to change anything in regedit and I can't even reset my pc because it requires an administrator password which I don't have, is not "nothing" nor is it administrator or admin or password and I can't change it through cmd either. I can't even access the administrator account because it is disabled and even with an elevated cmd I can't activate the "hidden" administrator account. I've ran malwarebytes and superantispyware and I am now looking for the Gandalf of all Geeks to help me solve this problem. I'd immensely appreciate it!

- run button in the start menu has disappeared.
- turn off button has also disappeared; I can only log off
- I cannot run the task manager when I press ctrl-alt-del
- some sys tray applications stopped being started up with the windows (skype, msn messenger, icq, adobe lightroom, daemontools)
- when I load Adobe Photoshop CS2, I get this message that says "You are not allowed to continue because your account does not have administrator privileges".
- I'm sure there're more things waiting to be discovered.

Trying to understand what you mean here.

-You enabled autologon for a standard user account
-UAC is now prompting for authentication but does not allow you to enter the admin credentials?

- Auto logon is not functioning properly if you were prompted for your standard account password to log into windows

Your administrator account is still available, it sounds like may have been hidden by enabling auto logon.

I would try reverting the changes you made to enable autologon.
If that does not make your administrator account reappear:

Since UAC is not functioning properly, created an elevated shortcut to the local security policy.

Hi and welcome to the fourm

Basically what you are asking is agaisnt this forum rules. Passwords are put in place to protect the information some one has placed on them.

The problem is "we" don't know who you are or even if it is your PC.

Let say that someone took/has access to "your" PC and you personal/buisness things that you don't want others to access. Would want a stranger help with a password?

That's Windows default behavior if there are other accounts other than Administrator. You can log on as Administrator by pressing Control + Alt + Delete twice in rapid succession at the Welcome Screen. This will bring up the old style logon box where you can type in your desired user name, in this case Administrator. To add the Administrator account to the Welcome screen, download Microsoft's TweakUI utility and repeat the steps show in this animation:

Hello,

I bought a laptop about a year ago. Shortly after buying it, we lost the password before making a backup disk. I couldn't change the password, we run Windows 7, without the old password. Luckily, or so we think, we have one of those laptops that has a fingerprint scanner so I have been able to log on using my fingerprint as a password. However, I can't believe that I am locked out of changing the passwords on this computer.

I have learned my lesson! Always back it up first! But for now, I need some help. I am also a little worried that I may have been hacked into. A friend said that if your password all of a sudden doesn't work, that is a sign of a hacker. That is what it felt like happened to me. I swear I thought I had the password right, then all of a sudden it stops working.

Thanks so much-Bill

Welcome to TenForums.

The first account Windows 10 sets up is always an administrator account. Subsequently you can use this to make more accounts. These would be standard accounts when you create them, but as an administrator you can promote them to be administrators too. Unfortunately an administrator can also demote their own account to a standard account, and it sounds like this is what your son has inadvertently done.

First, if you have any other accounts you can log in to, try loging in to each in turn to see if one is still an administrator. If it turn out you truly have no administrator accounts any more, don't despair, there is another one. It's the built-in account named Administrator. This is always disabled by default, but you can enable it. Then you can log in as Administrator and undo the damage your son has done by promoting your account back up to being an administrator again.

See option 4 in this tutorial...
Administrator account - Enable or Disable in Windows 10.

It would be a good idea to disable the built-in Administrator again once you have finished using it. It's not safe to use Administrator as your regular account. It has unlimited access to the whole system and isn't protected by User Account Control (UAC) as normal administrators are. It would also be a sensible precaution to create at least one more local account that is an ... Read more

Hello and welcome to TenForums!

If you can, use system restore to revert back to a previous point when things were working. and then you can try again to avoid entering the password by using the following tutorial. Due to the fact that you seem to have lost Admin rights you may find this difficult to do unless you can boot from a recovery disk and access the advanced startup options.

If you really did want to remove a password from your account you can do this (but I suggest you are more secure with a password):

Hi danbee80, welcome to the Vista Forums

It depends on what exactly has happened with the accounts but,
Vista is designed so that if there is not an admin account present it reverts to the XP method of working. If you boot into safe mode you should be be able to log in as the Hidden admin account, (Default is Blank password), and thus able to create a new admin account that you can use to recover files etc.

I currently forgot my password for my admin account on my laptop that runs on windows vista, i have looked up ways to bypass this issue and have ran into some issues along the way so first i looked up a password rescuer online but figured that i would have a hard time running it because my pass is more than 14 characters long. i also tried to run a system restore on it for an earlier time before i changed the password that i have currently forgot but an error keeps coming up due to a corrupted file on my c drive. all i want to do is gain access to my admin account so i can back up the files that are precious to me so i can run a factory restore on my computer then have it running clean again. Anyhow, I looked online for some other ideas and im currently reading and looking into ways to bypass the admin account by using a sticky keys trick the windows vista password or offline enabling the built in admin account on vista. The trouble that I am having is that i made it to where my files were viewable and accessable only through the admin account, does that mean they are encrypted? also would doing these tricks possibly delete my files or make them unaccessable? i also dont have a vista or windows setup dvd could i possibly do anything to bypass the admin account to keep my files, without the dvd? thank you so much, i know im in one heck of a pickle any help is very appreciated.

Well, I has playing around with netplwiz in order to (at least try) remove the password need when I log into the computer. I've managed to take out the password in the login, but now the only account existent in the computer no longer has the admin rights and it's listed as guest account. It wouldn't be that much of a problem if the UAC didn't prompted me every now and then (like when I try to run .exe files or do things that require admin rights) and asked for the admin password (which is "blank", as there is no digit in it). Not only that but also there's nowhere to "type" the password in the UAC prompt.
Is there anyway to solve this? I'm willing to do things as re-install windows, but no format because I don't want to lose my file. If you guys could show me a way to solve this without re-installing windows it would be much appreciated.
Thanks in advance, Henrique.

Hello guys,

Please help me find a way to solve my problem. Yesterday when I first set up Win10 I have created a windows account with my email. Soon after I have realized that my C:\Users\... folder was messed up, it was a shorter version of my email so I decided to swith to a local account instead and to my huge surprise I have love every right to change anything. I have tried every solution I have found on the internet. I am able to boot in save mode but the cmd doesn't point to the system32 so I cannot execute NET USER ADMINISTRATOR /ACTIVE:YES.

I spent hours and I couldn't fix it, I even switched back to the win10 account and I still do not have any rights to make changes. I can't even make changes in control panel in safe mode. It's getting frustrating and after the update the solutions on the other forums do not even make sence anymore.

I just want a local acount with my right name and administrator rights. Please help!

I created a password on my son's computer a couple of months ago in an attempt to force him to study for the SATs. I promised to give his computer back after he takes the SATs (and do well on them, of course), and he has recently taken them this past Saturday. Regrettably, I have forgotten the password to his account, and there is no other account on his computer other than a guest account available for use. The guest account seems utterably useless when it comes to recovering passwords. Is there any way to recover his password?
Any help on this matter is greatly appreciated.

Not sure why this is happening...

I have 2 admin accounts on my PC. When I try to install a software from my 2nd admin account, it asks me for the password of the 1st admin account.

But when I go to install the software in my 1st admin account, it doesn't ask for a password.

My 2nd admin account was initially a normal user account, but because it kept on asking for a password each time I wanted to install a software, I upgraded it to an admin account. Yet it still asks for a password!

Any idea why this is the case, and is there a work around?

Thanks.

A:Why does my 2nd admin account ask for a password when installing?

You might consider creating a new admin account to transfer everything over from your broken admin account to the new one in order to see if it solves the problem. This link will tell you how: Fix a corrupted user profile

However, you might simply check if UAC is the problem (it sounds like you do not want this security feature enabled): User Account Control - UAC - Change Notification Settings

recently, I've changed my admin password and forgotten already what I had typed . Now, I'm using the guest account and do not know what should I do to restore back the password as in the guest account many things can not do ! So, what should I do now to restore back or to get back into my admin account ?(Some ways that not involved with the money)
Btw, If I go for some pro to help out, will they find out about the password I used for the account now or just without knowing the password and unlocked the admin account for me?

A:How to restore the password for my admin account??

Hello Guanhui, and welcome to Seven Forums.

You could do a system restore at boot, and select a restore point dated before you changed the password to go back to what the password was at the time and date of the restore point.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

My daughters were messing around with the administrator passwords on their computers and one of them can't get hers to work. Tried Offline NT Password & Registry Editor to no avail.

Computer is an HP p6-2100z running Windows 7 Pro.

The password she entered is 22 characters long.

Any suggestions?

Tim

A:Can't log in to Admin account. Password is 22 characters. Help.

You can change the password for the administrator account via command prompt.
Are you able to log into any other account on that computer?
If not, you can do it another way which involves entering start up repair and accessing the command prompt from there.

Not sure if this is in the right place so I apologize if it isn't.
I have not used my laptop in over a year and totaly forgot my user password to access it. I read some junk online on how to create a bootup file on a usb but I guess I am mentaly challenged in that area. What I have it Vista Home Premium. Locked out cause I dont know my password. I have another computer to use, dvd dicks and a usb to use. I don't have the vista to reload it or I would of.
What should I do. If it can be explained simply that would be great to. Thanks

A:Forgot Password for Admin account

I am afraid you will not get much support on this forum for cracking passwords. You should have written it down. And the file on the USB you have to make when the system is running.
The only suggestion I can make is to reinstall the system either from the recovery partition or the installation disk.

So I am very stressed but im gonna try to be as chill as I can right now. I am the ONWER of my PC and should aloud to edit whatever files I want, but windows knows best so fine... ok... I enabled access to the hidden admin account. Because our user accounts that say admin is a way for windows to make us think we are system admins when we arnt. Every guide in the world says once the hidden admin account is enabled it will have no login password... mine does... what do I do? This PC is fresh out of the box no password was set. I need access to the hidden admin account unless this hidden admin is someone who payed for this PC and didnt tell me? Then Id assume I have the right to use my admin account on the PC. Thanks for anyone who reads this

A:Hidden admin account has a password???

So, here's the dealio: a friend got a PC running Windows XP Pro from work. They didn't need the machine anymore and gave it to her. The primary user account was setup to login to an NT domain and my friend has NOT changed that. Therefore, her account configuration settings (desktop wallpaper, etc) are all associated with her account which is part of the NT domain. I tried to boot into safe mode to do a spyware scan and she doesn't know the password for the local administrator account. So, we can't boot into safe mode.

How can we reset the password for the *local* administrator account? Would <Link removed> be safe or good to use for this?

Is it possible to migrate her account current settings to a local account we will create once we can get logged in as a local administrator?

Thanks!

Peace...

Okay, this is for a friend. I've tried everything I've been able to find, and since she got the computer second-hand..

Let me start at the beginning. This is her Christmas present, that her mom bought for her at some auction. It's a decent system, almost as powerful as my own. That being said, the person who sold it neglected to mention that the administrator account that allows you to do ANYTHING has a password on it. Not only that, but they also neglected to give a password recovery or reset disc with the computer.

As it stands, here's what we've tried thus far:
Tried using a program known as Ophcrack on a USB drive, but for whatever reason, it won't work without administrator approval. (Yeah, that had me scratching my head, too.)
Tried to clean out the machine and do a fresh install from the boot menu. (After almost a week, you get desperate.)

Those were the two most feasible ones I could find on the web, but after that, I have no clue how to do this. (I've loved XP for as long as I can remember, so.. I'm not particularly schooled in Vista.)

Just a quick note, in case you weren't able to infer it: the PC in question is running Vista.

If anyone at all knows how we can get around this password issue, please.. this is driving her crazy, and, being her boyfriend, it's driving me crazy as well. >_<

Thank all of you for your time, and Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays.

(I was taught to be polite. o.o)

Petter Nordahl-Hagen's offline nt editorhere is a password editor... it works really great for NT and 2000...sometimes works for XP sometimes not...if it does not work... the password hash will be trashed and mostlyit will have to have the harddrive wiped and windows re-installed.but... it is free, where quite a few other editors cost $$$--rex

Hi everyone. my name is norrie. ok i will let you know my frustrating problem. I have great computing skill and have never in my life been stuck with any problem computer related. i have always used XP and would class myself as a real xp tech geek. ok so my girlfriends dad decides to give me Her HP compaq 6715b with VISTA business OEM (laptop) and boy I struggle to get to grips with the security on it.

Problem - OK so my login is username workgroup/admin
password "no password"

ok so i have all the details like when the laptop was bought so on and product key info but no password. how can i default this ? can i default this?

or do i change setting in bios?

A:Lost admin password?

1. You dont change things in the operating system with the BIOS they are completely seperate (except that they work together in terms of hardware to kernel operations).

You can diable UAC in a multiple number of ways: How to Disable the User Account Control(UAC) in Windows Vista | AskStudent

A buddy of mine bought a used laptop w/XP installed and registered. Asked me to tune it up, but can't get into system because he doesn't have the Admin password nor can the person he bought it from find it. Don't want to reinstall everything because we don't have the XP disk. That, too, is gone.

The laptop is useable, but runs like a 400MHz. Slow for 2.4GHz. Takes several minutes to boot up and every window lags. Can do minor stuff such as defrag and shutting off several XP "bells and whistles", but it really needs a serious tune-up. Several of the start-up programs need to be shut off or removed. Also needs its reg cleaned. Also need to check the BIOS. Can't do it cuz it won't let me in.

Is there any way to nullify the passwords? I know on certain pc's, all I have to do is remove and reinstall a pin on the motherboard. This is an HP 2.4GHZ Celeron laptop. (Can't remember the name. It's at home. I'm at work.)

Any suggestions?

Thanks.
