Can't boot into Win7 - Required device is inaccessible

Q: Can't boot into Win7 - Required device is inaccessible

I installed Win 7 on another SSD and it works fine. But my old SSD can't seem to boot win 7.

The SSD is fine, I can see the files. GParted marked the main 'partition' as boot.

The repairing of it says something about missing partitions and trying to fix it. Though that didn't seem to work.

I've also noticed that along with main partition the System Reserved partition decided to show itself, not sure if that's related. Also, in Diskpart, there doesn't seem to be a name assigned to the volume, not sure if that plays a part too.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Old hard drives are mechanical devices with spinning platters and reciprocating heads. These moving parts cause wear. And, when this wear becomes great enough, it is no longer possible for the heads to zero in on exact locations where data is stored on the hard drive. In other words, it's simply worn out.

Hi all,

I'm desperately in need of help.

I just talked my gf into restoring her dell inspiron 5010n. It was getting slow and running way too many background programs (she likes to download games). We also believed that it was infected due to some program glitches.

Anyway, after copying all of her personal files to discs, I tried to reset her computer to factory settings through the control panel recovery advanced options.

The option to recover from disc was available (I created the discs right after we took it out of the box about 18 months ago), but would not initialize upon clicking on that option.

So, I inserted the recovery disc 1 into the cd/dvd drive and initiated the recovery after restarting the computer. Everything seemed to go well.

Windows started up, and I began configuring her computer. Anyway, windows indicated it needed to restart after downloading 1 update.

When the computer restarted this time, the windows boot manager came up and said:

Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. To fix the problem:

1. Insert your Windows installation disc and restart your computer.
2. Choose your language settings, and then click "Next."
3. Click "Repair your computer."

When you boot, there should be an F key for you to use to open the boot device menu. If you know what it is (F8 or something during the splash screen), could you use it to see what your boot options are?

I don't think I have seen that type of message before, so not sure what it might be.

Hi there

Hoping someone can help me with this booting problem.

About six months ago my hard drive failed and I had buy a new HD and re-install Win 7. I had created a backup on an external HD, but for some reason I could not restore the computer using this backup. I'm not sure if any of the backup data transferred onto the HD when I tried to do this. I therefore did a clean install of Win 7 and then copied the files I wanted across from the backup on the external HD.

Now, whenever I switch on the laptop the first screen I seen is the from the Windows Boot Manager, which says "Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause.... and it gives the "status as 0xc0000225. Info: The boot selection failed because a required device is inaccessible."

I then hit enter and the laptop boots successfully and all is good. The only reason why I have decided to fix this now is because I want to upgrade to Win 10, and I donit want this to cause any problems during installation.

The C drive is where I installed the new copy of Win 7 Op System and the E drive is the partition I created to store my data files etc. I'm not sure what the other drives are?

I have attached screens of the screen descibed above and also the Windows disk management screen.

Thanks for your help.

I have an Intel i5, Windows 7 Ultimate, and an SSD as my main drive and 2 SATA HDDs.

One day, I got a BSOD appeared and my PC restarted restarted. After that, the following error appeared:

Window failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. To fix the problem:
1.Insert ....
2. .... ... status: 0xc000000e info: The boot selection failed because a required device is inaccessible

Also I noticed that BIOS only detected one of HDDs, not SSD neither other HDD.

Sometimes, Windows can be started, but it doesn't work very well.
When trying to copy data from F: to an external USB, it copies for a short time and then Win7 becomes unresponsive. This also happens in safe mode.

After several reboots, now Windows will not boot and I get the error "The boot selection failed because a required device is inaccessible." And the BIOS only detects the SSD.

UPDATE: my disks:

HDDs
WDC WD10EARS-22Y5B1
Seagate ST31000528AS

SSD
FM-25S2S-120GBP2 - G.SKILL

Any suggestions?

A:the boot selection failed because a required device is inaccessible

Hmm, that looks rather choppy. Sounds like your disks have a physical connection problem. I suggest you check that.

Also, if the SSD seems to connect but the OS cannot be loaded, that would suggest that your bootmgr does not reside on the SSD.

Download an burn the bootable CD of Partition Wizard (last entry on the webpage). With that you can inspect your disks without the OS. Just load the CD.

If you have an XP disk and can boot into Recovery Console, run chkdsk /r

There are a couple of ways I backup client's documents, emails, etc.

1. Spotmau
2. Remove hard drive and use an external USB enclosure attached to another computer. This is my preferred method because I can copy and paste and also run chkdsk.

Hi, I know a lot of people have posted this but I think mine is different to theirs.

I took a SSD drive used to boot my sons pc, placed it in my computer and cloned it with Norton ghost onto a bigger drive.

When I put the new drive in his PC I got the error "boot selection failed because a required device is inaccessible"

I put his old drive back in, and got the same error as I assume because I placed it in another PC with a boot drive, it removed the boot capability?

I have tried to do a startup repair etc, but none of that will work.

Can I get his old drive to work again? All the info is on there, and I have a fresh install of windows 7 on a separate drive so I can boot in and look at his SSD, but am unsure how to continue.

Google has NOT been my friend!

A:boot selection failed because a required device is inaccessible

With both the original boot drive and the new drive with a fresh copy of windows in it, I went into the installation cd and was going to see if both versions came up, but before it gave me any selectable options it said it had fixed an error and would I like to reboot.

After I did it went into a dual boot screen with windows 7, and windows 7 ultimate 64 bit (recovery) options.

When I select the recovery version it boots into the drive like a dream, with everything there, so I closed the system, removed the new drive with the fresh version on it and I now get the missing ntldlr message, so I guess I can fix this with normal bootrec etc. commands.

I'll post on how I get on!

Problem? I suspect something with Acronis damaged by Windows 7 boot files.
How to fix????

In reading the various postings on the web (including Windows 7 forum!), it seams that Windows Startup Repair would be the best bet to resolving my issue. I put the DVD in, reboot, I see a scroll bar the bottom and text says "loading files....", then I see the "Starting Windows" splash screen with the Windows 7 logo...and that's it. The system never gets to a point where I can choose my language, select repair options, etc.

So....I read on the forums the Easy BCD would be a good tool to fix my issues. I downloaded it on a separate system and check it out. It looks like a GUI based program, so I'm confused on how to run it on my Windows 7 system that won't boot. Can I make a bootable version of Easy BCD?

Is correcting the BCD my issue? I don't know

Recently I shrank one of the partition on the data drive in order to enlarge the other partition on the data drive. The enlarged data drive contains the folders of some installed games but the system disk is separate and was not altered in this way. I'm pretty sure that I hibernated and recovered from hibernation at least once since that change was made.

Could it be that the OCZ drive has developed a fault? Or would it then be unable to even display this message?

When I attempt to repair the installation using the Windows 7 disc, the operating system isn't listed. I don't think that there are any drivers for me to load - I think it's supposed to be automatic (the driver must be a part of Windows own included set).

Hi everybody,

I am dualbooting Windows 7 Ultimate and Arch Linux (using rEFInd boot manager) on a GPT disk and (unfortuunately) have an UEFI system.

My setup used to work perfectly fine, until I recently updated rEFInd - and following this - deleted a paramount file on my ESP: bootx64.efi.

Obviously, I could not boot any OS anymore, so I tried to restore the bootloader but during this process I killed all my partitions.

Luckily, I could restore them using the tool Testdisk on an Archiso live usb stick. I restored bootx64.efi and wanted to boot Archlinux ... where I was greeted by an error message telling me that the root device rEFInd is looking for is not present. I could fix this by adjusting the PARTUUID in the respective config file and now I am booted to Archlinux. So as it seems, recovering the partitions using Testdisk resulted in changed UUIDs for my partitions.

However, I still can not boot Windows 7 because all I see is this boot error:

You are right that you have changed GUIDs for all your partitions. In this case, it is impossible to recover your Windows with the recovery tool.

I have a question about Windows cloning on the Y470. I tried to clone my system to an SSD using the Windows 7 backup/restore feature, but I'm getting an error that says "The boot selection failed because a required device is inaccessible". The error suggests using the Windows install disc to fix the problem. Does Lenovo provide a physical disc or ISO for Windows? I tried downloading the ISO directly from Windows using my serial number, but I got an error telling me to contact the computer manufacturer instead. Alternatively, if they can't provide a Win7 install disc, do you know if the computer's built-in Lenovo OneKey backup tool will work? It takes several hours to create and then restore a full system image, so I don't want to repeat the process without confirming that this is the proper solution.

Okay, so this just happened out of nowhere. Nothing seems to have led up to this -- the system booted and shut down successfully, and no software updates or installs were done during the period of time it was on when it was last working. I've attempted many things, but none seem to work. /ScanOs reports no OS detected, while startup repair said the OS was booted successfully. bcdedit also shows no directories linked to "unknown". CHKDSK reports no bad sectors, so such can be discarded. This happens every time I attempt to boot to Windows 7 (Home Edition, x64). I have a copy of Fedora 17 set to dualboot with it, but it hadn't been booted for over a week before the event. Any suggestions?

My hand moved before my brain realised...I uninstalled the device BUT i also checked the option for deleting the drivers.

Now, i get the error while booting :

Quote:
0xc000000e

The boot selection failed because a required device is inaccessible

What i realise is that windows are trying to find the device needed to boot ( stored on boot info) , but device is not there.

Ι already searched the forum for similar problems and already tried to do a Startup Repair from Windows Installation Disc repair menu (3 consequent times as written), with no result.

No restore points either.

Is there any way to manually fix this or my only path is a repair install ? All my data are safely backed-up.

Thank you in advance for your help.
ΕDIT : I don't know if this is the proper subforum for the above problem, i posted here because it was caused by a driver uninstall. If mods/admins think it does not fit in this subforum please tell me.

A:Error 0xc000000e "Boot Selection failed- Required device Inaccessible"

Well, i found the solution after some 50-60 Google results reading...

Solution was found in this page.

Analytically :

I loaded Recovery Console from my Windows 7 Installation Disk.

Had the AMD SATA Driver folder copied to a cd from my second pc. Driver directory was "W764A"

Ran diskpart and list volume to check the cd's volume letter

Ran the following command ( D: is CD ROM, D:\W764A is Driver Directory, C: is Windows Installation ) :

Code:
D:\dism /Image:C:\ /Add-Driver /Driver:D:\W764A\ /Recurse
I typed exit to exit Recovery Console, rebooted and voila....Windows Started normally...

Glad it was solved....

Can anyone give me some advice on how to reboot my PC after installing driver updates. (WIN 7 PRO 32bit) The problem seems to be that the keyboard driver did not install properly, and on re-starting gave the message "REQUIRED DEVICE is Inaccessible" - consequently I am unable to type any instructions (screen keyboard not set up) and I cannot access the Launch start up repair screen.
Is there any way I can get into my PC to get back to the last restore point and undo the damage ? Any help would be greatly appreciated - an idiots guide would be ideal ! Thanks.

A:Required device is inaccessible - How can I reboot ?

Hi BobbyE,

Welcome onboard.

Are you able to get into Safe Mode?

Keep pressing F8 repeatedly as your computer boots.

If it gets into safe mode successfully, in the Advanced Option Menu, select "Last Known Good Configuration (advanced)" and press ENTER.

That should discard the faulty driver and boot with the configuration it booted from successfully last time.

Sounds like a hard drive issue. Download the UBCD iso. Create a bootable disk and at the main menu select Parted Magic, At the Parted Magic desktop click on Disk Health and run the short/long tests.

If you do not have burning program that can burn a disk image you can use Imgburn. If you have a spare flash drive you can use Rufus to create a bootable USB flash drive.

I have a Fujitsu lifebook T series running Windows 7. At first I got a virus that said my computer was locked by the FBI and it told me to go to Walmart/Walgreens and buy something that would help me clear this off my computer. I tried to do a virus scan but windows failed to start. Windows boot manager pops up and says "Insert windows installation disc and restart". Is this protocol and if so can I use a friends Windows start up disc as I have lost mine. Or.. any other ideas? Please help. Hello
I've got a Dell d630 with Win 7 Prof 32 bit.My problem is rebooting during a Windows Update.

I clicked to install the update, and Windows did the configuring bit and shut down (as usual).

When I powered up, it came up with a Black Screen of Death:

Steps so far: 1) I prepared a new machine using a clean install of Win7 RTM x64, installed all of our productivity apps, then ran sysprep /generalize /oobe /shutdown 2) On another machine, I created a WinPE ISO using the Win7 AIK and burned it to a DVD. Next step is to capture the image and upload it to a fileserver. However, I can't even boot into the PE environment. Every time I try, I get Status: 0xc000000f Info: The boot selection failed because a required device is inaccessible. I've tried creating both x86 and x64 WinPE DVDs -- same result. Tried several, in fact, to ensure it's not due to a burn error. I am not doing any customizations to the ISO other than copying the appropriate version of imagex.exe to the root directory.

A:Booting to WinPE disc = 0xc000000f required device is inaccessible

Just created a x64 WinPE DVD with the Vista AIK and a different set of instructions -- it worked. No idea why.

I have a weird error that I have never seen before. I recently reformatted my media server. Current boot drives are 2 64gb OCZ vertex 2 SSDs in Raid 0. When I reformatted it had some odd behavior where it would boot only if a windows boot USB was in the drive. I thought this was odd and figured I could fix it later when I had time from the windows recovery. Well my procrastination paid off... or came back to bite me anyway

Now it will not boot to the drives with or without the USB, then when I place a USB windows 7 copy in there I get the error "The boot selection failed because a required disk is inaccessible". I thought maybe it was because it was trying to push the boot to the SSDs as it was before so I disconnected them tired of dealing with the raid 0 when the machine has turned into an over powered media server.

My motherboard is a Asus sabertooth 990 FX that has a UEFI bios and I just want to get this to boot. I don't care about the OS drives to be honest as my other drives have all my data. I am just out of ideas as to what I can do. It has no CD/DVD drive either so USB is our only option. I can see the USB on boot, I can select it as a boot drive. I have tried both NTFS and fat32 for it. I created the USB from my laptop using DISKPART using the following commands. I have tried an 8 GB, 16 gb and 32 gb drive for this as well. For the UEFI you are supposed to use fat32 if I remember correctly, but I did try NTFS just in case by the same directions but... Read more

A:[SOLVED] the boot selection failed because a required disk is inaccessible

I wanted to share what I found as the resolution so that it may help someone in the future.
First problem is it was a corrupt ISO. I pulled it from my company's file server again and was able to get a clean ISO.
Next problem was my computer was running with a raid 0 for the boot drive. The only way I could get into the recovery console was to go into the install, then load the raid drivers, exit the install then select repair. Then I proceeded to recover the MBR.

Hello! After yesterday (05.09.17) system update which was the only option to shut down my PC, I cannot start it. The automatic fix program said it was the error designated as Inaccessible Boot Device. I tried the system restore from two recent restore points offered by my PC. Didn't help. I tried startup repair - didn't help. System image recovery didn't work because windows couldn't find a system image on my computer. Not sure if I would like to try to reset my PC since this will bring the state when I got my PC by deleting all the software packages I installed but saving personal files. Is there any option I can fix my desktop without doing reset? Thank you.

A:Inaccessible Boot Device

Welcome to this forum. > The automatic fix program said it was the error designated as Inaccessible Boot Device. From what you write, below, it seems like that *WAS* the error, and that it *FIXED* the error, so that your boot-device (the disk-drive) once again is "bootable". > I tried the system restore from two recent restore points offered by my PC. Didn't help. Sigh.  But, it is good that it did boot from your boot-device, to get to the point where it offered this option. > I tried startup repair - didn't help. Sigh.  Did you try this repair a second or third time, to see if there were errors that were not fixed the first time? > System image recovery didn't work because windows couldn't find a system image on my computer. Sigh. > Not sure if I would like to try to reset my PC since this will bring the state when I got my PC by deleting all the software packages I installed but saving personal files. Windows 10 has a "refresh my PC" option, which they claim will reinstall Windows, without affecting your personal files and your other applications.  But, don't go there, just yet. > Is there any option I can fix my desktop without doing reset? Only a "long" path: * buy a new disk-drive;* disconnect the old disk-drive, and set it aside, for a while;* connect the new disk-drive;* reinstall Windows.  Since you have been running Windows 10, you have a "digital entitlement" ... Ive had a blue screen appear when i try to start-up windows XP. It says that there has been an error and that windows has shut down to prevent problems.
It didnt disappear so i was forced to reboot windows, that is now in a new partition with little space, the old drive is still there, but still shows the blue screen when i try to start it up.
I am looking to fix this error but have no real idea what the problem with it is. I am a reasonably good novice with pc's and have tried running both 'chkdsk' and 'fixboot' with the Windows recovery centre, both to no avail.

Any help on this matter would be nice, and anyone who knows how to fix it would be greatly received.

hmmm......have you checked the hdd for any errors. if your internet is working fine, i recommend going to the manufacturer's website of your hdd and download their diagnostics utility.

then boot up with it, follow the on-screen instructions, and test your hdd for any errors.

I'm trying to install windows 2k on this pc and it's giving an inaccessible boot device error(code 0x0000007B)

the real problem is that there shouldn't be a problem.
I resized my main partition to make 2gb of unallocated space.
I partitioned and formatted the space as NTFS
I can access it from vista and move files freely into and out of it,
but when I try to install win 2k it gives a bluescreen error after loading its components.

I'm trying to put 2k on so I can play metal fatigue, system shock, and other old games.

I'm confused as to how there is any error at all.

After researching and tinkering, i have found out that i need to get the SATA controller drivers for my motherboard. I have a Dell XPS 410 but i can't manage to find anything useful on the dell site, I need to know where I can find a SATA controller driver. HDD is a WDC WD5000AAKS in case you need to know.

I don't have a motherboard disk and I don't have the Dell drivers and utilities disk, which probably wouldn't have it anyway.

Welcome to the forums

one option since this a dell is to call tech support and get their help. it is a dell and everyone raves about dells tech support - so make sure to let us know how good they are. Dell also has a great feature in that you can restore it to its bought condition. Again, you have to get dell support to do this. if you have data you want to save, you lose that however. dell should be able to help you access your bios and make sure the boot device is turned on...doc

Signed up for DSL. Got the modem and the installation disk. Started through the process. Stopped me and said I didn't have an ethernet card, which I do, but had previous problems so maybe it was uninstalled.

Went out and bought a new ethernet card. Installed in an open PCI slot. Tried to install the drivers off the floppy provided. Got error message that inf file did not match the one specified. Took the card out; took out the old ethernet card; put the new one in that slot; tried again. Same error message.

In the meantime, my 5-year-old turned off the power source while the computer was on. When I tried to power up again, I got the following error message: ***STOP: 0x0000007B (0xF081B84C, 0xC0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000) INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE.

I am using Windows 2000 Professional, installed on my home computer by the IT guy at work, who now does not have time to try to fix it.

I unplugged the hard drive, took out the new ethernet card, turned on the computer again, but I keep getting the same message.

Keeping in mind that I'm not very computer literate, can someone walk me through the steps I need to do to get the darn thing to work again?????

This method deploys fine to our DakTech models and even our Lenovo T60 laptops. I can install from the DVD just fine on the machine. I have extracted the drivers from the ?reference machine? and added them to my deployment share. I have still receiving the ?error inaccessible boot device.? This image is from the DVD not a custom image, but I have tried a custom image from my reference machine with no luck. I have also tried both the normal and the legacy settings for SATA operation in the BIOS. I have since run across this issue with a Lenovo desktop as well.
